KAUKAUNA — Work has been ongoing to bring new life to the historic former Pechman building in downtown Kaukauna
and one of the new tenants has announced they’ll be moving into the building
The Inclusion Community Center will soon move into the building at the corner of 2nd and Main on Kaukauna’s south side
“Our new location is just around the block. Take a sneak peak at what we have been working on,” the group wrote Wednesday in a social media post.
Third Street and will be joined at their new location by other businesses on the main floor
and newly remodeled apartments on the second floor
Inclusion Community Center is a facility-based adult day service serving the Fox Valley
dedicated to fostering inclusion for adults with intellectual and physical disabilities
Founded in 2023 by educators Bryanna Moder and Shannon Diedrick
the center provides a supportive environment where individuals can find purpose
and continue learning essential life skills
The historic building has been at that location since before 1894
and for many years housed Pechman’s Portraits
“Like several other brick commercial buildings in Kaukauna designed during the 1880s and 90s
Pechman Portraits displays Romanesque elements for decoration
The most notable feature is the corbelling that follows the cornice
A series of small rounded arches form a decorative band beneath this cornice
The storefront has now been altered and a metal canopy added
accoring to “Walking Tour Through Old Kaukauna.”
As the Kaukauna Area School District begins construction on new projects funded by a recent referendum
four candidates are vying for three open seats on the district's school board
Three current school board members are running for reelection April 1
The school board election comes after Kaukauna residents passed a $198 million referendum in November to build a new middle school
add 4K and 5K to Victor Haen Elementary School and add improvements to other district schools
We asked the candidates to tell us why they should be elected. Their responses were lightly edited for clarity. Candidates are shown in alphabetical order, not necessarily the order shown on the ballot. To learn more about voting and how to register, visit myvote.wi.gov
we have continued to improve the opportunities for our students and respond to the needs of our community
I wish to continue to be a part of fulfilling the promises of our recent passed referendum and make Kaukauna truly a destination for families and educators
Bouressa: I am a lifelong resident of Kaukauna
We raised five children here and have grandkids currently attending our schools
I am passionate about education and believe KASD is the best possible place to raise a family
I'd love to continue supporting our students and staff
two are graduates from Kaukauna High School and two currently enrolled
I bring a different perspective to the board
we have a clear vision of what the district looks like now and for the future of KASD
I will ensure that we stay on track to be the best
be fiscally responsible and keep the focus on our children’s needs
Schaefer: I bring a unique perspective to the school board as a mom of three young children
and someone with retired parents on a fixed income
I want to ensure that all voices are represented
as my kids grow up in the Kaukauna district over the next 18 years
and now that I’m staying home with my kids
this is the perfect opportunity to give back and help our district meet the needs of all students
Berken: I have nine years of experience on the school board and have helped lead our district through difficult and exciting times
so I bring a unique perspective to our group
I have been through a recent construction experience in that district
Bouressa: I have 20 years of history with the board
I make all decisions based on thoughtful consideration of students
I understand the balance between doing what is best for our students
attracting and retaining quality staff and respecting community needs
Kurey: Being on the school board provides an opportunity to shape policies that directly affect students
I will advocate for investments that benefit not just current students but future generations
I care deeply about education and community well-being; being involved allows me to contribute to creating environments where students can thrive academically and socially
Schaefer: I have a deep understanding of the district and community
built from eight years of teaching experience at River View
and I will stay involved with our schools to remain informed about current challenges
With my child-focused experience and multiple perspectives
I’m dedicated to ensuring that every decision reflects the needs of students
while focusing on helping every student reach their fullest potential
I hear a lot about making sure the process is transparent and that we are fiscally responsible
We plan to have updates at each board meeting and through our district communication
Bouressa: Some residents are concerned with tax implications of building the new school
I am committed to being fiscally responsible
Kurey: Key issues we still need to focus on is the mental well-being of our students
A strategy that addresses all three areas can create a more supportive and effective learning environment
A student experiencing food insecurity may face difficulties concentrating; poor mental well-being can impact eating habits and vice versa
and effective nutritional programs can help students manage stress and improve overall mental health
student behavior and student/staff well-being
I’d begin to address these with a birth-to-4 outreach program to build early family connections and a talented and gifted program starting in elementary
We must also evaluate current practices like class sizes
developmentally appropriate schedules and behavior systems
to create a cohesive plan through the district
ensuring students and teachers are supported for success

KAUKAUNA — Students from area schools will participate in a Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) sanctioned Concert Music Festival hosted at Kaukauna High School on Friday
each school’s concert ensemble groups will perform before a panel of adjudicators while students from other schools listen in as part of their own learning experience
The festival will draw concert bands and orchestras from a number of area schools

Our long-standing festival programs encourage well-rounded musicians who develop deeper understanding through performance preparation that culminates in comprehensive feedback from a qualified adjudicator
coupled with observing and listening to peer performances
is invaluable for musical growth,” said WSMA Executive Director Laurie Fellenz
WSMA music festivals support school music programs as part of a comprehensive education by encouraging the study of quality music literature; motivating students to prepare and perform to the best of their abilities; improving students’ understanding of music literature and concepts (performance through understanding); and providing a performance assessment to improve individual and group achievement

KAUKAUNA — Former educator Kimberly Schaefer won election to the Kaukauna Area School District Board of Education
along with incumbents Chad Berken and Christine Bouressa
Incumbent Melissa Kurey was defeated in her bid for re-election
Scharfer said she looks forward to being a voice for all stakeholders
working with the rest of the school board members
making positive changes so all students can reach their full potential
and giving the needed support for all students and staff to be successful
KIMBERLY − Keegan VanKauwenberg understood the assignment Friday night
With his Kaukauna boys basketball team down a starter and on the verge of earning a share of the Fox Valley Association title
VanKauwenberg adopted a 'YOLO' mentality in his team's rivalry game against Kimberly
"Practice felt really good and the whole team
And his shots flew − over and over again − into the nets of Jack Wippich Court as the 6-foot-4 guard finished with a school-record 56 points in leading the Ghosts to a 98-79 victory over the Papermakers
VanKauwenberg scored in every way imaginable − by dunk
hitting on 65% of his shots (21-of-30) from the floor
That included a blazing 8-for-10 on 3-pointers and 8-for-8 from the free throw line
"It feels like shooting into an ocean," the UW-Green Bay commit said about being in the zone
Vote now for top FVA wrestler: Who is the best Fox Valley Association wrestler since 2000 from this list of state champions? Vote now in our poll
VanKauwenberg scored 26 points in the first half and 30 in the second as the Ghosts converted 36 of 57 shots from the floor
"I thought a really special night," Kaukauna head coach Mike Schalow said of VanKauwenberg's performance
So we're playing with one man down and coming into Kimberly to play a team that I think had been playing really well lately
And they're always a tough matchup for us every year
I thought they gave us everything we could handle
the biggest thing early on in the ball-screen action he was able to get to the middle-game shot
He's really the only guy on our team right now that has the green light for the middle-game shot
So I thought that got him going and got him into rhythm early
And once he got some rhythm in the middle game going
his elbow jumper and the threes and the layups started to fall into play."
VanKauwenberg's record shattered the school's previous mark of 52
set by Chris Morgan in 2022 in a win against Bay Port
VanKauwenberg was a freshman and played in that game
"That was a special moment as a freshman," VanKauwenberg said
I looked up to Chris and it was really fun to be on the floor with him."
Caden Graff added 19 points and was 9-for-12 shooting
Andrew Jensen also had 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Ghosts (20-3 overall
Ben Grabner had 26 points to lead Kimberly
Kaukauna can win the FVA title outright with a victory over visiting Fond du Lac on Thursday
The Cardinals are a game behind the Ghosts for league title supremacy
"We realize that we’re not done," VanKauwenberg said
"We have to keep coming to practice and keep working
It's still the first season and we still have the playoffs after that
But we do know Fondy is going to be tough."
Schalow is no stranger to superb singular performances as Kaukauna has as rich a history of scorers as any program in the state
"Certainly Jordan McCabe had a lot of great games," Schalow said
"And the Chris Morgan performance with 52 against Bay Port ..
but I don't know of anybody that scored in the variety of ways that Keegan scored tonight and the efficiency that he shot the ball at
it was like shooting it into the ocean for him
Just everything felt really good and you could see it in his eyes
I just felt it was one of those games where we got a man down and Keegan wasn't going to allow us to lose."
Freedom's Davis eclipses 1,000 points for careerFreedom sophomore Donovan Davis continues to add to an already extensive resume as one of the top boys basketball players in the state
The 6-foot-7 swing eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for his career following a 22-point performance in the team's 81-52 victory over Luxemburg-Casco on Friday night
has helped the Irish to a 21-1 record and outright North Eastern Conference title
He's the seventh player in the program's history to surpass 1,000 points and the first to accomplish the feat as a sophomore
Kimberly's Krueger expected back for regional playThe No
3-ranked Kimberly girls basketball team is expected to welcome back injured forward Raegan Krueger as the team prepares for the postseason
"That's a huge add for our team," Kimberly senior guard Kate McGinnis said Friday
is averaging 12.6 points and 6.4 rebounds for the Papermakers and her return should solidify an already potent team lineup
which won the FVA title with an 18-0 record
will play in Friday's WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal at home either Sheboygan North or Waukesha North/South

MADISON − Make it one for the thumb for the Kaukauna wrestling team
The Ghosts completed a WIAA rarity − winning their fifth consecutive state team championship − after their 54-13 demolishing of Arrowhead in Saturday's Division 1 championship match at the UW Field House
recording five pins and three wins by technical fall
"It’s almost like a cast of characters on the team," Kaukauna coach Jeff Matczak said
"They’re good kids but they’re all very unique and special in their own way
with the talent and investment that he puts into it
"There’s just a lot of satisfaction watching that whole group go out there."
Saturday's basketball results: Appleton area high school sports results for Saturday, March 8
The Ghosts started fast and never looked back
Kaukauna got a pin from Brady Sprangers (175 pounds)
a technical fall from Zach Winnekens (190)
back-to-back decisions from Liam Crook (215) and Nehemiah Lendobeja (285) before another pin from Trenton VanSchyndel (106)
Breck Ritchie (144) and Kolin DeGroot (165) also won by pin
with Nick Jenkins (120) and Peyton Lee (157) getting technical fall wins
Jacksyn Thorpe won by decision at 132 to round out the dominating performance
said being a state champ throughout his whole high school career is special
I couldn't have done it without the people around me
I couldn't have done it without the community of Kaukauna and my family and the family that's here as well
who earned the team's lone individual title last week at 175
wrestled up a couple of weight classes Saturday and got a 7-0 decision over Luke Driedric
His victory over a wrestler perhaps 30 pounds heavier underscored the Ghosts' willingness to do anything it takes to get the win
"I knew I had to switch up my game plan and not just try to do what I do at 175
It was a little tight at first and really not the performance I wanted
but I wanted to help the team and that's all I wanted to do."
Said Matczak: "Going into it against all these teams
you put a challenge to him and what gives us the best chance if things go wrong
We want the lineup of our team to win as many matches as possible
But then you see so many of our other kids getting pins and tech falls − they wrestled out of their minds."
The Ghosts' five consecutive championships puts them in elite company as only four teams have won five or more consecutive titles
Wisconsin Rapids won seven consecutive titles (1995-2001) and also won five titles in a row (2003-2007)
Milwaukee South also won five consecutive titles (1950-54)
It's the ninth state championship overall for the Ghosts
who were making their 23rd appearance overall
Crook and Lendobeja lead a talented returning group of athletes ready to shoot for a sixth title
"Tomorrow," Lendobeja said when asked when he and his teammates start preparing for next season
We celebrate for 24 hours and once that 24 hours is done
Matczak said the program is all about improving
"We have so many things we can improve on and the big thing is to have the confidence that they can do this
but second is the discipline and the reality of what's going on around them
It's a big thing we focused on this year − being real and being truthful and being present
And I think you saw that on the mat tonight
"We had a lot of hard times during the year
because I want to pull their ears off sometimes
Arrowhead 13175: Brady Sprangers K pinned Carter Smith 1:44

It was a frustrating loss for Weyauwega-Fremont in the D3 championship
as Mineral Point secured the title with a 32-28 victory over the Warhawks
It was a back-and-forth contest with each team winning every other match
Collin Hamm's major decision victory at 150 pulled the Warhawks to within 28-22 with two matches remaining
But a gutsy major decision victory from Mineral Point's Sawyer Dannenberg in the next match at 157 secured the match for the Pointers
Close matches can be decided by extra points during the match
scoring extra points in five of its seven match victories
including two pins and two technical falls
Carter Birdyshaw got the lone pin for Weyauwega-Fremont at 138
Josue Azuara (113) and Riley Scherg (126) all got wins by decision
with Alex Loehrke receiving a forfeit at 165
"I think first thing we talked about is that you can work really hard for a goal and sometimes it doesn’t go your way
and that happened to us today," Weyauwega-Fremont co-coach Trevor Potratz said
"And just understand that you can do everything right
We had an opportunity to go get it and they took it from us
"So that kind of burns a little bit more than just getting beat
Credit to Mineral Point because they went after us
The Warhawks were making their second consecutive appearance after reaching the D3 semifinals last season
"Weyauwega has always been a strong wrestling community," Potratz said
"There's been an uptick the last couple of years and you see it in the kids and the energy
And when they love to wrestle and work really hard
it brings energy from the community and people around
We just keep elevating and every year we get better
I don't really focus too much on the results
just get as many kids involved in the program and make sure they're having fun and having good experiences
And the results kind of take care of themselves."
the Warhawks (26-1) rattled off 33 straight points to take control and upend Oostburg 45-33
Weyauwega-Fremont got pins from Tellyer Alix (215)
Hoffman (285) and Azuara (113) in the run and technical fall wins from Jaydon Le Noble (106)
The Warhawks clinched the match on Birdyshaw's pin of Oostburg's Levi DeZoute at 138
Carter McDaniel also got a win by pin at 175 earlier in the match

KAUKAUNA — Fans of Taco Bell could soon have an option right in town if a new proposed restaurant is approved by the city of Kaukauna Plan Commission
The Commission on Thursday will consider a proposal for a new restaurant at 1800 Crooks Avenue on the site of the former Family Video
just across 18th Street from Dick’s Drive-in
The site plan is for the redevelopment of the existing site
Developer Pacific Bells proposes razing the existing building and constructing a new building for the Taco Bell
The building has a foot print of approximately 2,240 square feet and will be located on the northern portion of the property
according to a site plan submitted to the city
The building layout and design is similar to other recently built Taco Bells
The property is laid out to accommodate 7 vehicles in the que line with the parking lot area able to handle addition vehicles to prevent the drive thru line from extending into a road
KAUKAUNA — A house fire to a home on the 100 block of West Fifth Street caused around $150,000 in damages to its structure, the Kaukauna Fire Department said
Fire officials were dispatched to the scene at 2:14 a.m
arriving to the scene within four minutes of notification
firefighters saw smoke coming from the upper floor
Crew members were able to ensure all of the home's occupants
where it extended through a wall and ceiling in a second-floor attic
Access to the residence's attic was difficult due to the age and construction of the home
It took firefighters three hours to fully extinguish the fire
Many belongings in the home were tarped by the fire department in hopes of salvaging them
The cause of the fire remains under investigation
All seven schools in the Kaukauna School District will see improvements after district residents approved a nearly $200 million capital referendum Tuesday
This was the only school referendum question in the Fox Cities this fall
but KASD is hardly alone in going to its communities for funds
Here are the details of the Kaukauna referendum:
with 11,337 (63%) in favor to 6,563 (37%) against
How much and for what: The district asked for $198 million to upgrade all seven of the district's schools
The bulk of the money would go toward building a middle school on district-owned land near Kaukauna High School and adding 4K and 5K classrooms to Victor Haen Elementary School
Tax impact: In its annual budget presentation
the district said the tax rate with an approved referendum would rise to $6.86 per $1,000 of fair market property value
up about 12% from the 2023-24 tax rate of $6.13 per $1,000
Why it's needed: Superintendent Mike Slowinski said in October that the current River View Middle School site doesn't support "current best practices for modern student learning." The building is too small to support a student population of 1,000 as well as flexible learning spaces
Other schools also will receive safety and security upgrades
Last referendum: The district last went to referendum in 2019 to ask for $32.9 million to renovate River View
Voters rejected it in part because they felt the school "no longer meets the needs of the students" and would be "fiscally irresponsible" to renovate
