In a record-breaking performance, Emma Friedel shattered multiple records and climbed the Conference USA leaderboards
bringing Guzowski home and putting KSU ahead 2-0
The Aggies responded with a solo leadoff homer in the second and another in the fourth to even the game at 2-2
The Owls looked to reclaim the lead in the fourth when Shaver doubled for the second time

“I was the classic ADHD kid who thought I was bad at math – I thought I’d love to be an engineer
but just wasn’t smart enough,” he said recently
I took sort of an artistic route into engineering by earning a bachelor’s degree in three-dimensional design at Whitworth University.”
Eaton worked for several years in areas that kept him close to what he loved by teaching robotics and engineering in high school in California
earning a certificate in mechatronics from a community college there along the way
he and his wife moved across the country to North Carolina
where he works as the makerspace and engineering lab manager at High Point University’s Webb School of Engineering
“If you have the opportunity to pursue an online degree
the investment in time and money versus reward for the program at Kennesaw State is fantastic,” he said
Eaton said the content of the program is cutting-edge and challenging
and the professors are generous in helping students get the most from their studies
He even got to work for a semester as a remote graduate research assistant
He especially liked the program’s flexibility
“I really appreciated the asynchronous components of the classes,” he said
“I wasn’t sure how much of the program was going to be on someone else’s time
There were certain exams that had specific times
But I often needed to put all my focus on my job during the week and would spend the entire weekend on my studies.”
Eaton has made a positive impression on his KSU instructors
“Matt is as diligent a student as can be found
His passion for robotics is what sets him apart,” said Matt Marshall
“He approaches learning with an eye toward solving important problems with robot technology and educating others about this field.”
Assistant professor of robotics and mechatronics engineering Razvan Voicu was impressed with Eaton’s attitude toward the course work
“Matt consistently shows exceptional motivation and passion
approaching challenges with enthusiasm and sustained positivity,” Voicu said
“His dedication and genuine interest consistently drive meaningful progress in his work
It was truly a pleasure to meet and work with him.”
Though he wanted to attend his Kennesaw State graduation ceremony
this is a remarkably busy and consequential month in the Eaton household
He and his wife are anticipating the birth of their first child this month
as well as the publication of his book “Make: Robotic Arms” being released on May 20

Those who walk through Kennesaw State University may find what looks like a 12-foot stone slap covered in graffiti
That's actually a piece of the Berlin Wall
as in the massive German barrier brought down in 1989 as part of the end of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War
The piece was donated to KSU by former state senator Charles “Chuck” Clay who received the piece from the Checkpoint Charlie museum in Berlin in gratitude for his grandfather's service, according to a 2019 news release
He chose Kennesaw State because of its Museum of History and Holocaust Education
"This wall gives us all a piece of history you can put your hand on
Something you can see and understand," Clay said at the time
"A little piece of Georgia will always be in Berlin because of my grandfather
Who was Charles Clay's grandfather?Clay is the grandson of General Lucius D. Clay from Marietta who was the first director of civilian affairs in Germany after World War II, according to Brittanica
During his time as military governor and commander in chief of the U.S
Clay was responsible for gauging the requirements of food and shelter for a devastated civilian population and
supervising a de-Nazification and de-industrialization program
his administration was marked by the successful Allied airlift of food and supplies into Berlin during the Soviet blockade of that city
After he retired and during the Kennedy administration
Clay served as JFK's personal representative in Berlin under the rank of ambassador
The Berlin Wall piece is on KSU's Kennesaw campus near the northeast corner of the Social Sciences building at 402 Bartow Avenue
There is a plaque in front of the piece identifying it as well as explaining its history including the fall of the Berlin Wall
and how this is a reminder of the friendship between the U.S

Formerly working as a bedside pediatric cardiovascular intensive care nurse
Thompson now serves as an informatics advisor at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta
supporting an advanced technical team tasked with solving complex problems
helping to formalize governance and build processes to support provider ordering in the electronic health record (EHR)
Thompson dove into computer coding and logic
a skillset she uses everyday working with the hospital’s EHR
she works with the hospital’s clinical decision support system
Thompson recently helped build clinical decision support that notified clinicians when to exchange nasojejunal tubes
feeding tubes that deliver nutrients to the small intestine
“A lot of my work is about problem solving,” Thompson said
You have to be able to interpret it and know what data is actually meaningful to help clinicians.”
“It’s a well-rounded program that went beyond straight nursing informatics
and there was a lot of camaraderie among the students as well as networking opportunities for us to connect with health industry leaders,” Thompson said
founder and executive director of the MSHMI program, launched the program nearly a decade ago to fill the talent gap for skilled professionals in Georgia’s healthcare technology workforce and adopted a novel approach to do so
As the first degree of its kind in Georgia with a large economic footprint
it encompasses healthcare delivery, business management
information technology, and building strong academic-industry partnerships.
“We train our students to not just understand trends — we train them to come up with solutions,” said Sneha
in computer information systems and is also a professor of information systems and security at KSU
“They are given the tools to analyze workflows of processes and have an overall understanding of health care.”
very grateful for how this program came together for us
how it has helped create a platform where we could project KSU as a serious player with strong industry partners in the health informatics field and to build our credibility in the healthcare ecosystem locally and globally.”
Experiential learning opportunities bridging student success are a pivotal part of the MSHMI program
and Sneha has built strong academic-industry partnerships to afford opportunities for professional growth and real-world experiences to students. Wellstar Health System is among the program’s many industry partners
hosting students and fostering growth through mentorship
Several graduates have been recruited with the health care giant
“I think our collaboration has really had a focused impact on real-world projects that have benefited the students
faculty and Wellstar,” said LeeAnna Spiva, the system’s assistant vice president of nursing practice and operations
Spiva serves on the MSHMI program’s industry partner and advisory board
Students have played a vital role in advancing Wellstar’s key initiatives
including virtual nursing platform that aimed to address the vulnerability of nurses during an outbreak, an issue uncovered by the COVID-19 pandemic. Wellstar brought in faculty and students to evaluate available technology and what processes other organizations are using for virtual care
and to conduct workflow efficiency studies on the amount of time it takes nurses to carry out a task
“Students have assisted in evaluating and deploying innovative solutions that really drive our operational excellence and improved patient care,” Spiva said
“I think their fresh perspectives and analytical skills have been invaluable in addressing these complex challenges in this rapidly evolving healthcare landscape.”
“This is one the most exciting times to be in digital healthcare and our graduates are ready to create a positive impact on the industry,” Sneha said

The President’s Award of Distinction has been established to celebrate the accomplishments of one exceptional graduating student each semester “who serves as an inspiration to their peers
and the entirety of Owl Nation.” Duong was chosen based on her academic excellence
and involvement in research endeavors to improve people’s health and wellbeing
“I’m still processing that I am the first student ever to receive this award,” Duong said
but I feel like this award is not just about me
It’s more of a reflection of everyone who has been supporting me throughout my whole journey from my very first day at KSU until now.”
“Anh is precisely the type of high-achieving
passionate student we envisioned when we established the President’s Award of Distinction,” KSU President Kathy S
“Anh’s journey – from a first-year student with a heart to help others
to a standout scholar whose work is already making a real-world impact – is inspiring and a reflection of what is possible at Kennesaw State.”
Duong was chosen to join Valero’s research team that is developing GlucoCheck
a non-invasive device for people with diabetes to monitor their glucose levels
the GlucoCheck device is a ring-like senor that uses light absorption technology to estimate glucose levels without using blood samples
“When I arrived at Kennesaw State University
I carried that question with me,” Duong said
“I wanted to transform my passion for helping others into meaningful action
with my professors’ guidance and an opportunity to work as a First-Year Research Scholar
I found my answer: I’d build technology to improve lives.”
While Duong has been involved with the GlucoCheck project for much of her college career
She and information technology student John Oakley teamed up to win the top undergraduate presentation at the Fall 2024 Symposium of Student Scholars for their analysis of Kennesaw State’s GenCyber Camp
which provided underrepresented high school students with exposure to cybersecurity and cyber-related degree programs at KSU and other schools
at the Spring 2025 Symposium of Student Scholars
Duong presented her ongoing work to design and develop a mobile app that would analyze a person’s behavior and activity to predict the onset of mental health conditions
Duong aims to examine correlations between mental health issues and factors such as heart rate variability
“Anh’s passion for research and innovation is evident in her ability to integrate technical expertise with real-world impact.”
Valero commended Duong for mentoring other research assistants in the labs
guiding them in software development and data collection
Duong takes pride in that praise considering that she describes herself as “a shy student who feared she would never find her place” when she began college
“KSU has given me more than an education – it has given me purpose,” Duong said
“It has shown me the value of confronting challenges
and the responsibility of using my knowledge for social good

“I was really inspired by what happened at the British Library in 2023,” said Varlet, who graduates this month with a bachelor’s degree in information technology
“A cyberattack shut down the entire system
and no one could check out books or access resources
It really made me think about how critical these places are
and how under protected they can be compared to private companies.”
Public institutions house valuable data and cultural history but often lack the funding and infrastructure to defend against cyber threats
Varlet’s research aims to elevate these concerns and offer inclusive solutions rooted not just in technology
“If a library doesn’t have high-speed internet or trained personnel
how can we expect them to implement complex cybersecurity systems?” she asked
“These social and economic factors need to be part of the conversation.”
Varlet’s experience at Kennesaw State has been fueled by faculty support
She is particularly fond of her experience working with assistant professor Yixin “Chloe” Xie in the university’s bioengineering-focused X-Lab
Through her work in the lab, Varlet was also introduced to the VICEROY Initiative
a program funded by the Department of Defense that aims to build a skilled cybersecurity and IT workforce by engaging students in applied research and real-world problem-solving.
“Bon stands out not just for her technical talent
“She’s driven by a deep sense of purpose and a commitment to equity in cybersecurity
I’m confident she’ll continue to make meaningful contributions on a global scale.”

Boudiab’s classmate Abby Evans has a slightly different story
Hers began with an appendectomy as a teenager and memories of the incredible group of nurses who brought her back to health
“It takes a truly unique person to have that compassion for other people
and I think that is really what makes us different from others,” Boudiab said
and I hope the other people feel the same way.”
Though they took different paths toward Kennesaw State’s nursing program
and Evans share a common thread in that all are members of the inaugural cohort of the Wellstar-Tom and Betty Phillips Elite Honors Nursing Scholars
the program aims to produce top-notch nurses who benefit from a strong emphasis on academic scholarship
Each scholar belongs to the KSU Journey Honors College and participates in nursing-focused research projects in addition to rigorous curriculum in the Wellstar School of Nursing
“We know that these students are going to be the cream of the crop,” said Amy Roach
assistant professor of nursing and faculty advisor to the initial cohort
“Few 18-year-olds know what they’ll want to do when they graduate
but these 13 students have stuck with it through the hardships
We have no doubt they are going to become leaders when they graduate.”
The academically challenging program is a joint venture between KSU’s Wellstar College of Health and Human Services
and emeritus member of the Wellstar Board of Trustees Tom Phillips
the latter serving as partial inspiration for the program’s name
“To have the opportunity to be a part of an elite honors nursing scholarship program at KSU has been a rewarding experience in my life,” Phillips said
Wellstar College Dean Monica Swahn said it’s hard to tell who will benefit more from the Elite Honors Nursing Scholars program — the 13 soon-to-be graduates who earned a rigorous education and forged timeless bonds with their classmates
or the medical community that will benefit from their work ethic
She credited the initial cohort with answering the challenge with aplomb
“This group of students came to KSU in difficult times and showed amazing resilience from their first day to now,” Swahn said
“They’ve persevered through a rigorous academic program
comprehensive professional experiences and intensive research projects
and they’ve done it all with great passion.”
“Over the years we've spent so much time with each other
so we're definitely a unified group,” she said
Before walking in May’s commencement ceremonies
the cohort’s final assignment will be to complete their capstone project
which Roach said separates this cohort from their peers
Boudiab and Evans are pursuing a project on the effectiveness of meditation as a stress relief technique among nursing students
while Cruz and his co-researchers are studying the mitigation of burnout among sexual assault trauma nurses
“Participating in research will give us a leg up
whether that is in applying for residencies this fall or applying for an advanced practice degree program,” Cruz said
but these projects will be very beneficial in helping us land jobs in areas in which we’d like to specialize.”
“The faculty and staff that are part of the program are exemplary,” Roach said
We put way more into the program than what has been asked of us because we know these students are going to be top notch.”
“It’s truly been an honor to take part in this program,” Cruz said
“Everybody we’ve come in contact with — our professors
our fellow professionals in the clinicals — has been amazing
I appreciate our donors for making this program possible
We’ve got a great future ahead of us because of it.”

"It would be a game changer for sustainability,” said Baruah, who teaches in Kennesaw State’s College of Science and Mathematics
“Imagine eyeglasses made from transparent wood that detect fatigue in truck drivers by monitoring blinking patterns
Most food storage bags are made with plastic
it would be safer for the environment."
Baruah’s approach is a departure from existing transparent wood technologies
Many products on the market today are strengthened with epoxy resins that are not biodegradable
Baruah and alumna Ridham Raval are developing entirely natural materials to replace epoxy in transparent wood products inspired by centuries-old buildings made with natural cement mixtures
Baruah observed how traditional construction methods used sand
and egg whites to create durable structures before modern cement existed
Baruah hypothesized that these same materials could enhance the strength and stability of transparent wood
Wood consists of three main components: cellulose
Rather than replacing those components with epoxy
Baruah’s method uses egg whites and rice extract
making the wood stronger and more environmentally friendly
The material has been tested on a birdhouse
transforming it into a one-window insulated home
Baruah and Raval evaluated the wood’s energy efficiency by placing a heat lamp underneath to
finding the material offers better insulation

“It reflects a rising culture of philanthropy that is transforming how we support our students and elevate the university
I am inspired by the more than 1,500 donors who stood behind Kennesaw State to make this day a resounding success
the future is brighter for our students and the entire KSU community.”

A challenge also went out to the volunteers who served as Giving Day Ambassadors

I’m incredibly proud and grateful for the outpouring of support — every gift makes a difference in the lives of our students.”
