contributors — The Simon Kenton High School baseball team is competing with a special purpose in mind this season the Pioneers think of former player Brad Franzen a 2013 Simon Kenton graduate who has stage 4 colon cancer “We get them (the teammates) huddled up in the dugout and we send a prayer to him,” said 2027 outfielder Nathan Barth is the son of junior varsity coach Mark Franzen It’s the second time Brad has been diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer since November 2020 “Now that he is going through it again — we just felt like as a program we had to come behind that family and do everything we could to support them,” Simon Kenton varsity baseball coach Brady Smiley said Donations will be accepted at the concession stand for The Franzen Colon Cancer Research Fund Simon Kenton also has shirts adorned with “Family” and the cancer awareness ribbon across the front with the Franzen name Hear more about Franzen's fight and how the team is supporting him: “There are times that life reminds you that we are playing a game and there are things bigger than baseball,” Smiley said “So when you get an opportunity for two teams who usually are Northern Kentucky rivals When you get a chance to come together and show each other that love and support that baseball allows you to have I think you got to take advantage of that moment to show these kids that there are things bigger than baseball.” is the Simon Kenton boys and girls swimming coach Carol is grateful for how the baseball program and school community has reached out to show love and support for her family “It’s been incredible; I kind of start to tear up when I talk about it,” Carol said the first time Brad was diagnosed the outpouring was just — I can’t even describe it When everybody heard that Brad had a re-occurrence They did so much the first time — it’s hard to expect them to do the same thing the second time the outpouring of love and support for us and for Brad has just been incredible especially with this game.” Brad grew up in Independence and graduated from the University of Louisville after high school along with the couple’s son and daughter live in Bloomington “He is still so amazed at how many people still rally around him,” Carol Franzen said “Every time he comes home people are coming up to him and saying We love you.’ It just shows kind of the effect it’s had on people here.” Brad underwent 11 rounds of chemotherapy and two surgeries after initially being diagnosed at the age of 25 in November 2020 it was discovered he has stage 4 colon cancer again The family said since Brad's cancer was initially in stage 4 “He now has a tumor in his pelvis,” Carol said And hopefully to shrink the tumor so they don’t do another surgery.” In addition to Saturday’s game, the Franzen Colon Cancer Research Fund has a number of fundraisers this year including a motorcycle charity ride at High Stakes Harley-Davidson in Florence June 28 along with a golf outing at Kenton County Golf Course June 29 The family also asks for prayers for Brad’s recovery Coach Smiley and the Pioneers are certainly helping with that aspect “People are gathering baskets for the golf outing that we’re having,” Carol said “Just this game and the fact that people are willing to go out What (Smiley has) done to raise awareness to other communities Smiley said the season is a teaching moment for the players in the Simon Kenton program “We take everything so seriously which I’ll always do,” Smiley said It’s really what you do with the relationships that you create that matters.” SIGN UP: Subscribe won 92 straight games against in-state competition their last loss coming in double overtime to Mercy Academy on Feb There was no hangover for the Lady Pioneers who beat Holy Cross by 21 two days earlier They have now won 15 of their last 17 and sit at 21-4 overall "This game went down the exact same way the Cooper game went down bucket," Simon Kenton head coach Jeff Stowers told 859 Sports Radio's Mark Wehry after the game The Jaguars held a large fourth quarter lead at home against Cooper on Jan Simon Kenton’s largest deficit of the night came early in the first quarter at 4-1 Freshman Bella Ober had the Lady Pioneers’ first 4 points of the game and 16 points in the first half SK built an 18-12 lead after eight minutes and held a 36-33 lead at halftime thanks to seven 3-pointers and several backdoor cuts that led to layups The Valkyries were able to keep it close thanks to nine SK turnovers that led to uncontested fast-break points Lady Pioneers head coach Jeff Stowers placed Megan Gadzala on McDonald’s All-American Zakiyah Johnson who was held to 5 points in the first half Johnson finished with 25 points but fouled out midway through the overtime period the Valkyries kept the game close but were never able to take more than a one-point lead Haylie Webb scored four straight points to help the Lady Pioneers take a 54-47 lead into the final eight minutes As Sacred Heart coach Donna Moir is known to do she told her team to ratchet up the pressure The Valkyries responded with an 8-0 run to open the fourth quarter and take a 55-54 lead Anna Kelch responded with a triple to give SK a 60-55 lead Another big shot down the stretch sent the game to overtime Sacred Heart junior Tootie Jordan splashed a 3-pointer with 45 seconds left to give the Valkyries a 64-63 before Ober tied the game with a free throw The Valkyries needed a second-half comeback to beat No 2 ranked George Rogers Clark on Wednesday night but couldn’t replicate the same feat on Friday in Independence Johnson and Morgan Frey all fouled out in the fourth quarter or overtime Their absences took away a lot of length on defense The Lady Pioneers were subsequently able to break the press and drain the clock in pursuit of the win While Ober had the most impressive scoring run in the first half Kelch authored the biggest moment of the game After passing the ball in a triangle with Haylie Webb and Brynli Pernell she caught a pass in the right corner and made her fourth 3-pointer of the game to give SK a 68-66 lead in overtime going up against the team that we did," Kelch said Simon Kenton made 12 3-pointers on the game The only made field goal after that point was Riley Gilvin’s put back after a missed free throw to cut it to 71-70 The Valkyries had a chance to tie the game at 73 points apiece but Becca Carson's 3-pointer with about 10 seconds left hung on the rim for what seemed like an eternity before falling off Ober and Pernell in the final minute sealed the deal "It was making sure there was nobody else in the gym It was just me shooting like I was in practice," Pernell said Pernell also drew two charges in the final minute the second one fouling Johnson out of the game The Lady Pioneers stuck with the same five players for the entire 36 minutes; four of them (Pernell Webb and Kelch) ended the game in double figures "We have two good point guards on the floor who can get us out of a lot of stuff," Stowers said of Pernell and Ober On the same day the Kentucky High School Athletic Association revealed the state tournament brackets the Lady Pioneers proved that the Valkyries are Many fans and media members throughout the state thought the Valkyries would not face any roadblocks on their way to a fifth straight title Simon Kenton only reinforced
