WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A massive fire at a Kernersville recycling facility has been fully contained
but officials are still investigating the cause of the blaze that sent black clouds billowing into the sky over the weekend
The fire broke out Sunday afternoon at the OmniSource scrap metal recycling facility on West Mountain Street
Chris Kauffman at Kernersville Fire Rescue said
we got called to a commercial building fire
it ended up being one of the piles of scrap that was there that was on fire."
Residents living near the facility expressed concern over the frequent fire breakouts at the site
described the situation as "awful" during the height of the fire
"I had a film at the back of my throat
and my lips had almost like a deposit of something
noted the various odors emanating from the fire
Firefighters used over one million gallons of water to extinguish the flames
Kauffman explained the difficulty in tackling the blaze
"There are large piles of scrap- once the fire gets down into it
it’s hard to penetrate that with water."
Emergency responders are collaborating with OmniSource to monitor air quality and potential water runoff issues
Kauffman assured the public that there are no health concerns
"The air monitor has ceased right now
they did not find any hazards there."
Kauffman said crews will continue to monitor the site for any hotspot flare-ups as the investigation into the burnt materials continues

— The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has announced a new project aimed at reducing traffic congestion in downtown Kernersville
This initiative comes as work continues on the Winston-Salem Northern Beltway
with traffic expected to increase across the area
The project will focus on Big Mill Farm and Hopkins Roads
where officials say changes are necessary to improve congestion and safety
Traffic congestion is a complaint local NCDOT officials said they hear a lot from Kernersville residents
“They do have a lot of congestion from our knowledge and our roads and on their networks especially along that main street corridor and the business center," Matt Jones
Division Project Development Engineer with NCDOT
That's where this project is hoping to help
Jones explained that the project will widen and extend Big Mill Farm Road as well as improve Hopkins Road from Harmon Creek Road to West Mountain Street
"That’ll be a two-lane median-divided roadway," Jones said
"And it will have sidewalks and bike lanes along that corridor."
the project includes building an interchange at U.S
The new interchange would be a partial cloverleaf interchange with ramps and loops in the northwest and southeast quadrants
"This would allow for that traffic to get to the highways and the business centers without all having to flow through the center of town," Jones explained
It's all changes that align with the town's long-term goals as well
“We’ve coordinated very closely with the town of Kernersville on all the project and the congestion that they’re experiencing," Jones said
The total cost is estimated to be around $100 million
with construction expected to begin in early 2026
so we just ask folks to be cautious as they travel through," Jones said
Construction is expected to take 3-4 years
Jones assured that the improvements will be beneficial
but once it’s done - obviously there will be a lot of improvements in the area
with a lot of safety improvements and mobility," he exclaimed
If you know of a troubled roadway you would like us to investigate, just email us at traffictips@abc45.com
We'll air your concerns every Tuesday evening
