AFC Telford United won promotion in magical style with an unforgettable 4-2 comeback play-off final victory at Kettering Town
The Bucks trailed 1-0 and 2-1 as they feared a second consecutive Southern Premier Central play-off final defeat but Kevin Wilkin's troops showed great spirit to roar back late on and seal promotion to National League North
Wonderful scenes marked full-time in front of a record attendance at Latimer Park
Right-back Jahdahn Fridye-Harper bagged the crucial third goal 10 minutes from time with his first goal for the club
Substitute Rhys Hilton rounded the keeper for four in stoppage time in front of a delirious away end
who invaded the pitch to celebrate at full-time in Northamptonshire
Earlier on the hosts had led twice through ex-Premier League striker Nile Ranger and Wes York
but Telford struck twice back through Orrin Pendley's bundle and a wonderful Jordan Piggott finish to cap a flowing move for 2-2
The demons of Leamington 364 days earlier were banished as Wilkin and the Bucks look forward to National North football and brighter times
Each of the goals were celebrated with real emotion by members of the Bucks board in the directors' box
including Shropshire-born Hollywood producer Chris Ball
It has been quite the few days for the club after they prevailed from behind in a topsy-turvy semi-final at home to Halesowen last Wednesday but emotion and drama was multiplied in the final showpiece
It was a first away victory since January but the dramatic victory means the Bucks end the season 18 games unbeaten and regain their National League status
against the side who finished second and four points further up the Southern Premier Central
after several play-off heartaches as Brackley boss
Atmosphere built around a sun-kissed yet chilly Latimer as many as three hours ahead of kick-off
Fans spilled out of the ground's perimeter and into fan sections outside
A cohort of young boisterous supporters spilled out of Kettering railway station at 12.30pm
The visitors' allocation of 600 travelling supporters packed into the end their side defended in the first period in a sea of white
The Bucks started purposely as Dylan Allen-Hadley slipped Byron Moore through on goal
and goalkeeper Dan Jezeph rushed out to narrow the angle and save
Wilkin's side were the livelier of the opening stages and top scorer Matty Stenson - passed fit late after a groin concern - was unable to connect to an inviting Jimmy Armson cross
The blustering May wind wreaked havoc with one or two crosses
It took Richard Lavery's hosts 20 minutes to work an attack
Brandon Hall fielded a fierce York strike well after a neat backheel from Ranger
The Poppies gained a foothold and former Buck Sam McLintock sent a swerving
dipping effort wide of the sprawling Hall's left post
The home side rode early Bucks pressure and took charge by the midpoint of the first period
The breakthrough came just after half hour as Kettering right-back Ben Hart made good ground down the flank and his accurate cross was inch-perfect for Ranger to volley home from close range
The Bucks rallied with skipper Luke Rowe geeing the troops
Piggott bobbled a 20-yard strike at Jezeph
A huge opening came and went 10 minutes before the break
Allen-Hadley's cross from the left was met by Stenson but he failed to keep his header down from six yards out
It was a double blow for the visitors as Armson pulled up in the same move and was withdrawn for Remi Walker
Armson was later spotted on crutches and his absence was felt
Stenson almost fired a sensational pick-me-up but his 30-yard half-volley flew narrowly wide
The sharp Bucks hitman then fired well over shortly before the interval
Telford re-emerged with the bit between their teeth and drew level
A Jordan Cranston free-kick was deflected behind and the left-back's corner was attacked by Stenson in a crowded box and bundled home by defender Pendley in front of the away end
Moments after stewards had removed the white smokebomb from the goalmouth the home end erupted again as Kettering re-took the lead
Hart's delivery caused trouble and was returned from the left flank by Jamar Loza and York was alive ahead of defenders to turn in from close range
Piggott was moved into an attacking midfield role as Walker dropped deeper and the former dragged a bouncing effort well wide
Wilkin's move to push Piggott paid off in some style with 20 minutes to go
Stenson shone with a wonderful piece of control and skill
He stabbed forward a pass with the outside of his foot that interested Piggott
The former West Brom youngster rounded Jezeph with his first touch and finished with his left foot from a tight angle for bedlam behind the goal
The second equaliser took the wind out of Kettering sails and Telford powered on
If Piggott's second sparked wild scenes what would follow cranked up several notches
Right-back Fridye-Harper picked the ball up inside his own half with no business to do what came next
He charged forward and kept going until he reached the Kettering box
From the right corner he sent a low strike across goal which arrowed low into the far corner for a Telford lead
Bucks nerves jangled in the closing minutes but they need not have
A backpass was short and a slip helped Hilton in on goal
He kept his cool and slotted home and all behind the goal lost theirs on a day to remember for AFC Telford

Kettering Foundation in Dayton asked him to do something he’d never done before
Michaud, who at the time was an accountant at the private, nonprofit foundation
said his boss told him to draw up tax documents showing that the foundation’s former vice president and treasurer
because Cobb didn’t work for the foundation in 2020
It also was unusual because the total compensation Michaud was asked to declare on the tax documents was more than twice what Cobb was paid the last time he worked a full year for the Kettering Foundation
Why was Cobb the foundation’s highest paid employee – higher even than the president and CEO – in a year he didn’t work there
who served as the Kettering Foundation’s controller before leaving in 2022
said his search for answers to those questions revealed serious flaws in the way one of the largest charitable foundations in Ohio does business
included lax bookkeeping practices and oversight failures that resulted in the loss of hundreds of thousands of dollars
“It’s kind of just like an unmoored ship,” Michaud said of the foundation
Cobb and Kettering Foundation officials disagree
And foundation leaders say they have thoroughly investigated Michaud’s concerns
They said the Kettering Foundation, with more than $400 million in assets and millions of dollars in annual spending, is a good steward of the legacy of Charles F. Kettering
the early 20th century inventor and businessman whose name appears on hospitals
university labs and city streets all over Dayton and whose fortune still supports nonprofits from Ohio to New York
The foundation employs dozens of people in southwest Ohio and collaborates with many more around the world on initiatives that support its mission to advance the cause of democracy. Its partners have included the NAACP, The Smithsonian Institution
who shared foundation credit card receipts
said the Kettering Foundation’s spending hasn’t always aligned with its mission
was for years able to bill the foundation for expenses without explaining how they were related to his job
from car washes and pest control services to a Netflix subscription and thousands of dollars in cash withdrawals
Michaud said the 2020 tax filing that declared $573,463 in compensation to Cobb wasn’t a new payment but rather a retroactive acknowledgement to the IRS that Cobb had received more money than foundation officials had realized over the years and more than had been reflected in previous tax filings
About a year after he helped prepare those tax filings
Michaud outlined his concerns about Cobb’s spending and foundation officials’ handling of the matter in a letter to the Kettering Foundation’s board
Though Cobb has never been charged with a crime
Michaud’s letter to the board in late 2021 described the expenses he questioned as “theft.”
“Beyond the failures at the individual level to stop or question what was going on
it was a dysfunctional culture that allowed such brazen theft to go unchecked for several years,” Michaud wrote
“Those in leadership are not held accountable
which fosters an atmosphere where someone with access to funds may not fear consequences.”
Neither foundation officials nor Cobb would discuss the reason for his departure from the foundation or details related to his compensation
It’s not necessary for me to disclose the circumstances that drive that compensation,” said Cobb
who as treasurer oversaw the foundation’s assets and investments
and it performed very well over the years I did that.”
described Michaud as a “disgruntled” former employee and said foundation officials properly handled his concerns
After Michaud and a colleague alerted foundation officials to a potential problem
those officials hired outside firms to conduct an audit and investigation
He said those firms talked extensively to Michaud and at least a half dozen other foundation employees
“I don’t know what else the foundation could’ve done to be more responsible.”
He declined to share copies of the investigators’ reports
but he said they found “nothing material about any allegation of breach or theft.” James said the investigators’ work inspired some changes to management and accounting practices
but he described those changes as typical for any organization after a comprehensive audit
Many cash withdrawals, few explanationsMichaud said he jumped at the chance to work at the Kettering Foundation when he learned in 2017 about an opening there for a job as director of accounting. He grew up in the Dayton suburb of Kettering and knew well the story of its namesake and most famous citizen
A pioneer in the auto and aircraft industries
Kettering developed the first electric starter
a propeller-driven guided missile and other inventions that helped make America a leader in early 20th century manufacturing and technology
Kettering’s interest in science inspired much of his philanthropy. He established the Sloan-Kettering Institute for Cancer Research in New York and
For decades before and after Kettering’s death in 1958
the foundation’s research and grants focused on science and technological innovation
But the focus shifted in the 1980s to strengthening democracy around the world
and the foundation now primarily hosts conferences and provides guidance to support that mission
less than a year after he began work at the foundation
Michaud began noticing what he described as sloppy and incomplete record keeping
he became aware of an $800 cash withdrawal by Cobb on a foundation credit card
Michaud said he assumed the withdrawal was for a legitimate business purpose
but he wondered why Cobb didn’t avoid the transaction fee by submitting a request for a check like other foundation employees
he found Cobb had been withdrawing cash for years without submitting expense reports explaining why
Credit card statements Michaud provided show Cobb withdrew more than $200,000 in cash between November 2010 and January 2019
while also incurring about $10,000 in fees and interest
Cobb withdrew cash almost every month in amounts ranging from about $500 to $5,300
Some statements show multiple withdrawals for as much as $800 just days apart
it was impossible to know the purpose of the withdrawals
“It’s not very likely there’s a legitimate reason,” he said
He decided to address the issue by approaching Cobb directly
He said he met with him in January 2019 and suggested he do a better job documenting and explaining his expenses
Michaud said Cobb’s cash withdrawals stopped immediately
more questions arose related to Cobb’s use of credit cards
he learned an American Express account that Cobb controlled had been receiving wire transfers of money from the foundation
it was acceptable as long as the money covered legitimate expenses
But Michaud worried the arrangement made it difficult to track and review the payments and their purpose
in part because the credit card’s statements were sent to a post office box instead of to the foundation
a senior accounting manager at the foundation
told him she’d questioned Cobb’s spending in the past and urged him to bring his concerns to upper management
Michaud and Robinson met with Maxine Thomas
who was then a vice president at the foundation
Thomas did not respond to an interview request
but emails provided by Michaud confirm she spoke to him about Cobb’s spending and continued to discuss Michaud’s findings for weeks after their meeting
In an email exchange with Thomas in April 2019
Michaud explained he had located all of Cobb’s wire transfers since 2011
and was trying to match them to the Kettering Foundation’s payments to vendors during the same period
was to determine whether Cobb had pocketed any of the money
“It’s hard to determine exactly how much of the $7 million was kept and not eventually paid to KF vendors,” Michaud wrote to Thomas
Michaud noticed that Cobb had sent a wire transfer of $150,404.16 from the foundation to the American Express account
Cobb justified the expense in a handwritten note
His note included invoices for a foundation conference totaling $75,404.16 from a Courtyard by Marriott Hotel in Dayton
It also included a notation that an additional $75,000 was needed to cover “investment expense.”
No invoices or receipts were included to explain the investment expense
“Where is the backup for a number that large,” Robinson wrote to Michaud in an email
“Someone has to tell him that he can’t keep doing this,” he responded
said he did not have access to the auditors’ working papers
but he said he is confident they determined the $75,000 was a legitimate business expense
As Michaud gathered more statements for the American Express card
he said he found other questionable charges
Billing records he provided from June and July 2018 included some purchases connected to the foundation
but also other expenses that Michaud said did not appear to be business related
Those included $193 spent at a Dayton shoe store
an online purchase of $173.78 from the Zumiez apparel and footwear company
two purchases totaling $287.90 from the auto accessory company WeatherTech Direct
$334.33 at an Elm & Iron home furnishings store near Columbus
$248.41 at a Dayton car wash that offers detailing services
and $660 for a pest control service in Florida that property records show is about 10 miles from a house Cobb owned at the time
The credit card statement also included more than $500 spent at restaurants and coffee shops during the same month
foundation officials turned to outside accountants and an Ohio law firm
Michaud and Robinson shared their findings with the team
but neither was directly involved in the investigation
As the investigation continued into July 2019
his bosses announced Cobb would not return
When Michaud learned the terms of Cobb’s departure
He said Cobb retired with full benefits and
the foundation had made no effort to recover the money in question
Cobb also would continue to serve in a volunteer position as treasurer of the Sustained Dialogue Institute
a nonprofit dedicated to conflict resolution that sometimes works with and receives financial support from the Kettering Foundation
Michaud said he became convinced the deal was an attempt to protect everyone involved
“I think it was just all about sweeping it under the rug,” Michaud said
Michaud said he considered notifying law enforcement
but he ultimately decided to try to change the foundation from the inside
He said he began advocating for more oversight and better business practices
He also told investigators and his bosses that he believed any foundation money paid to Cobb needed to be reported to the IRS
If the foundation had learned Cobb took more money than the foundation had previously disclosed
it had to report the money and Cobb had to pay taxes on it
Michaud spelled out his concerns in an email in July 2020 to one of the accountants hired by the foundation
“We had a conversation about whether funds stolen from an organization need to be reported to the IRS as income to the perpetrator,” Michaud wrote
“Everything that I have referenced seems to require that this is reported to the IRS.”
The accountant responded that investigators “have been working with Kettering’s attorneys on this issue.”
Thomas told Michaud to draw up a W-2 earnings tax form for Cobb showing he’d received $573,463 in compensation
He said she did not explain how the foundation had arrived at that dollar amount
The same amount would later show up on the Kettering Foundation’s Form 990 tax filing
which the IRS requires of all charitable foundations
Because Cobb had not actually received $573,463 that year
Michaud said he had to call the foundation’s payroll processor to walk him through the filing process
“That’s the only time I have ever done it,” Michaud said
James declined to discuss in detail how the foundation’s auditors determined Cobb’s compensation or why Cobb was entitled to it
He said the total could have included previous unreported compensation along with severance and other pay
All that I’m concerned with is that the auditors evaluated and determined whether this individual was going to be put on a W-2
James said investigators produced 150 pages of findings and recommendations
and none indicated anyone committed a crime or fraud
they determined Cobb’s compensation was legitimate
“They went through everything exhaustively
“They interviewed all the key people at the foundation.”

Though he wouldn’t share the investigators’ reports
James said they recommended that the foundation require the chief financial officer to submit expense reports directly to the CEO and that the foundation eliminate situations in which supervisors submit expenses to employees who report to them
“There were some procedural improvements and safeguards that needed to be addressed,” James said
The foundation also investigated whether Michaud’s complaints rose to the level of a “whistleblower complaint” and whether anyone at the foundation had retaliated against him
a concern that Michaud said he never raised
conducted by the Taft Stettinius & Hollister law firm
concluded Michaud was not a whistleblower and “did not allege any illegality
violation of accounting principles and standards
or regulatory violations.” It also described Michaud as an “unhappy employee” who was not in position to know whether Cobb’s spending was appropriate or whether foundation oversight was adequate
Michaud’s allegations concerned matters simply not within the purview of an employee at his level,” the report said
“Others related to expenses that are not illegal or unethical.”
a Kettering Foundation board member who spoke to Michaud after he sent his letter to the board
said she’s also satisfied with the foundation’s handling of Michaud’s complaints
“I do feel comfortable saying it was addressed,” she said
Cobb worked briefly for the city-owned Dayton International Airport as manager of the division of administration and finance
he said he’s proud of his work at the foundation
“The people at the Kettering Foundation are fantastic,” Cobb said
“I enjoyed my time there and that’s really all I have to say.”
now the chief financial officer at another Dayton charity
said he left the foundation of his own accord
He said he decided to speak out because he believes the problems he discovered put future foundation assets at risk and call into question the foundation’s commitment to its mission
As he wrote in his 2021 letter to the board
Michaud remains convinced that "one of the dysfunctions of the culture at the foundation is to hide problems."
He said his former bosses at the foundation
which survives on the endowment of its namesake founder and the investment income it generates
“This guy left all this money to try to better the world,” he said
“I was bound and determined to really change the place.”

Goalkeeper Dan Jezeph celebrates after saving a Harborough penalty in the shootout
both made headlines this season by reaching the FA Cup second round
But on Wednesday night it was Kettering Town who came out on top against Harborough Town in the most dramatic of circumstances to keep their Southern League Premier Central play-off hopes alive
The Poppies won 4-3 on penalties following a goalless draw
despite failing to score with either of their first two spot-kicks
and will now host AFC Telford United in the play-off final on Monday
May 5 (15:00 BST) with a place in the National League North or South next season at stake
"I didn't watch it - I had my back turned
I did see one go in [but that's all]," Kettering manager Richard Lavery told BBC Radio Northampton
"We did practice penalties but that was in front of no crowd
and nobody in that entire ground - Harborough fans included - can say we didn't deserve to win that game
"We had plenty of chances and you've got to take one of them - it wasn't to be
then it goes to penalties and the first ones weren't great
but it doesn't matter - we're through to the final."
who knocked out League One neighbours Northampton Town in the first round of the FA Cup
had home advantage at Latimer Park by virtue of finishing second in Southern League Premier Central
But their opponents were boosted by the return of former Tottenham and Brazil midfielder Sandro
who appeared for Harborough in their 5-3 FA Cup defeat by Reading after a chance meeting with manager Mitch Austin
Ranger helps Kettering stun Northampton in FA Cup
To Harborough with love - Sandro's FA Cup fairytale
Sandro came out of retirement to play for Harborough in the FA Cup
It proved to be an unhappy evening for the 36-year-old who was one of four Bees players who failed to score in the shootout
"It was amazing to be here with the boys
We need to be proud of ourselves because they gave 100%
it's unlucky," Sandro told BBC Radio Leicester
Asked why he had returned for the play-offs
the Brazilian said: "We created a very good connection
It was amazing to be part of the FA Cup game and I said 'let me be involved again'
For me it was a dream to come here and play in front of the fans again."
The score was 3-3 when Sandro stepped up for his penalty
but he shot wide and Connor Johnson eventually settled the tie with Kettering's seventh spot-kick
I just tried to put it in the corner and it was a little bit out
Kettering are hoping to return to the second tier of non-league football for the first time since being relegated in 2023
but face tough opposition in Telford who went through by beating Halesowen 3-2
Lavery was assistant to Marcus Law the last time Kettering won promotion to National League North in 2019
He returned to the club in February last year as their third manager in four months and his appointment was followed three months later by the arrival of the ambitious George Akhtar as Kettering's new owner
They took four points from their two games against Telford in the regular season
but Lavery is taking nothing for granted before Monday's game
"Telford are a good side - I don't underestimate anybody
We've got one more game to go - nothing's won yet," he added

Kettering City School District leaders want community input on the future of its buildings
They will hold a public meeting for parents
students and other community stakeholders at 6 p.m
It will be in the recital hall of Fairmont High School on Shroyer Road
During the meeting, administrators will explain a recent comprehensive study done by the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission
it reviewed all 11 buildings in the district
The oldest is Van Buren Middle School — it went up in 1949
The state commission recommends tearing down and building 10 new buildings
New schools will make the district more efficient
"Think about your HVAC systems and those types of things
and all those things in terms of from where we've started in 1949 and the 1960s to what they have done," McCarty-Stewart said
"We can create those facilities for some rural operational efficiencies."
new buildings will also enable the district to build space efficient schools that better fit the student population of around 7,500
It has 659 certified teachers and licensed counselors
The estimated cost to build 10 new buildings is $406 million
The community would have to cover the rest
the district will put a levy on the May 2026 ballot for the proposed new construction
It'll take a year to design several new buildings and about two years to build the first buildings

$1.39 million grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to bolster an existing program aimed at reducing the spread of the opioid epidemic
The PAUSE – Not All Pain Is the Same program helps clinicians across the country provide opioid-free care by offering education on alternatives to opioids for five key types of pain: benign headache
The grant will expand the efforts of PAUSE by funding the placement of emergency center pain navigators in all thirteen Kettering Health emergency centers
Pain navigators connect with patients during their visit and after discharge to maximize opioid-free pain management
The funding will also be used to host additional training sessions for providers to learn more about utilizing opioid alternatives
identifying Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) and connecting patients with necessary addiction recovery services
The grant will also support the creation and distribution of educational materials for patients to provide more information of opioid misuse and addiction recovery.
“Not all benign pain requires treatment with an opioid
PAUSE focuses on implementing alternatives in these situations that effectively manage pain without exposing patients to potentially addictive substances,” said Dr
Kettering Health emergency medical director and founder of PAUSE
we are able to expand our efforts to curtail opioid prescriptions and continue doing our part to help stop the cycle of addiction.”
This project is supported by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) of the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as part of an award totaling $1,395,284 with 0% financed with non-governmental sources. A group of visionaries from Flint founded Kettering University in 1919 as The School of Automobile Trades
It opened under the direction of Major Albert Sobey with the goal of training technical and management talent for the rapidly growing automobile industry
By 1923 the school had grown to offer a full four-year cooperative education program enrolling more than 600 full-time students
and in recognition of this growth Major Sobey rechristened it the Flint Institute of Technology
Three years later and appreciating the importance of cooperative education
the General Motors Corporation acquired the school
renaming it the General Motors Institute (GMI)
For the next 56 years, GM operated the school as GMI
and it became for the company one of its best sources of creative and successful engineering and managerial talent. By 1945 the Institute had added a fifth-year thesis requirement and had evolved into a full degree-granting university with a unique educational model built upon an ongoing and strong commitment to cooperative education
GM divested itself of ownership of the school, and it became the private
non-profit University it is today, however first under the name GMI Engineering & Management Institute (GMI-EMI). Shortly thereafter the institution began offering Master’s-level graduate programs to both on and off campus students
GMI-EMI changed its name a final time to honor, Charles Kettering (1876-1958)
an industrialist, and an early and strong proponent of professional cooperative education
the school continues this historic tradition
Over that proud 100-year history, Kettering University has become one of the country’s premier STEM institutions and is known around the world for educating great and successful leaders

Kettering Stories Video Series
With 2019’s “Kettering University/GMI at 100,” author
historian and consultant Troupe “Tim” Noonan captured the institution’s unique story of perseverance and adaptation in its first century
Noonan has published over 35 books specializing in institutional and family histories and written extensively for Life
The Kettering University Archives is located at Factory One in Flint. The focus at the archives is to preserve and provide access to the history of Kettering University
The Special Collections and University Archives was established in 1974
largely through the vision and research interests of Richard P
Scharchburg and members of the University’s Alumni Foundation. The nexus of the collection was the acquisition of the William C
“Billy” Durant Collection from Durant’s widow
and has grown into a collection in excess of 4,500 linear feet of documents (manuscripts and photographs
plus several hundred books and other “artifacts.”
The emphasis of the collection documents the early history of the automobile industry—not surprisingly
given the early history of the University itself
the collection is also an excellent source for the history of Flint and the history of Kettering University itself; the three are inexorably intertwined
The collection also documents the administrative
academic and social life of Kettering University
Beginning with the papers of Major Albert Sobey
the archives is the home of the records kept by his successors as well as many other offices of the University
The archives has also collected copies of The Reflector
the yearbook published by the student body
as well—and the archives is always looking to add more of those kinds of records.
Kettering Collection is one of the largest collections in the archives and has been used by scholars worldwide
The archives’ digital photo collection now exceeds 100,000 images
A partial online catalog along with digitized photos can be found on the archives website
The Humanities Art Center is located on the fourth floor of the Academic Building on campus
The gallery features world-class exhibits and collections that exemplify the craftsmanship of local and national artists
A variety of media are represented including paintings
The center also holds a permanent collection of over 500 pieces
The Archives is open to the public from 10 a.m
excluding holidays. Kettering University's Curator of Special Collections may be reached at (810) 762-9690
