Despite clear signals he was putting Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre in an impossible spot
issuing this especially provocative bit of advice to Canadians on Truth Social on Election Day itself:
Elect the man who has the strength and wisdom to cut your taxes in half
No more artificially drawn line from many years ago
Look how beautiful this land mass would be
America can no longer subsidize Canada with the Hundreds of Billions of Dollars a year that we have been spending in the past
It makes no sense unless Canada is a State
Trump was essentially offering to displace the entire Canadian election system and extinguish that country’s sovereignty in exchange for his benevolent rule from Washington
he’s taken the joke far beyond the point where anyone in Canada is laughing
making himself a bit of a laughing stock in the process
If that’s not enough, the president’s persistent bullying of Canada has drawn extra attention to his single most unpopular economic policy initiative: the on-again, off-again trade war that has unsettled markets everywhere and convinced price-conscious Americans that inflation is about to make a comeback. As Gallup recently found
Trump’s tariffs may make Americans forget they ever thought Democrats were the party of inflation:
do find it “very likely” or “somewhat likely” that the levies will end up increasing the cost of goods for American consumers
and Independents all expect the new tariffs to lead to higher prices
So Trump’s assault on Canada has turned out to be a sort of own-goal hat trick for the 47th president, part of a broader self-destructive pattern during the first 100 days of his second administration

The target of the administration’s campaign is a stratum of society that’s sometimes called the professional managerial class
although there’s not one universal moniker that MAGA applies to the group it is now crushing
That group includes society’s knowledge workers
the winners of the tournament that is the American meritocracy
and other white-collar workers who have prospered in the information age
there’s a pattern that connects the attacks on funding of university-based research
the effort to control corporate HR policies
the crackdown on inconvenient sources of data
the furious Elon Musk–Russell Vought assault on the federal employees and contractors
the characteristic lawlessness of Trump 2.0 and the wild extremist rhetoric accompanying many of its actions is more consistent with a project of class warfare than any merely partisan or ideological agenda
that there’s a long and terrible tradition in right-wing authoritarian politics of intense hostility to allegedly self-serving and disloyal “elites” that have to be demolished so that a given nation
and bureaucratic elements — which were thought to be disproportionately Jewish and “cosmopolitan” — were treated as the incorrigible enemy of truly productive capitalists
Thus they had to be crushed by any available means
there’s a less lethal but still distinctive U.S
conservative tradition of animosity toward the so-called PMC
often described as creating a government-dependent underclass in an unholy alliance of parasites feeding off the work of productive and patriotic Americans
That sort of thinking has gone viral in Trump 2.0:
Animosity to the PMC is a propulsive force in Trump’s second term
Rather than merely replacing its ideological foes—by installing its own appointees in federal agencies—the administration is bent on destroying their institutional homes
That’s the lesson of the Department of Government Efficiency
What gave this anti-elitism a lot of its political oomph is the working-class sense of betrayal at the financial experts’ bungling of the U.S
and the scientific experts’ overreach during the COVID-19 pandemic
But it’s not just elite-hating working stiffs who have made Trump’s enemies their own and turned his vengeance into a full-blown political agenda
There are Trump’s billionaire backers who see a heaven-sent opportunity to disable the bureaucratic restraints on their own wealth and power
And there are the technocratic engineers who view bureaucratic desk jockeys as useless cannon fodder in the coming transformation of all work by AI
Elon Musk, for one, adopted a … disdain for the PMC as a business plan. When he took over Twitter in 2022, he laid off 80 percent of the workforce, including the Trust and Safety Council and a chunk of the company’s content moderators. As the Silicon Valley entrepreneur Antonio García Martínez put it
Musk was taking a stand against “the professional-managerial class regime that otherwise elsewhere dominates.” Not only did he treat this caste with disdain; he implied that it was doomed to the dustbin of history
because its members’ functions could be so easily subsumed by artificial intelligence
A shared hatred of the PMC drew Musk to Trump
and the Twitter purge foreshadowed Musk’s approach in government
Then as now the driving force was the belief that an entire class of citizens was inherently disloyal and engaged in work inimical to the regime’s radical goals
it helps explain the peculiar savagery of Trump 2.0 and its disdain for both structural limitations on its power and for any downside consequences of poorly executed actions
virtue is found in the class struggle itself
What’s most worrying about this interpretation of events is that it doesn’t suggest there will be any self-correcting process for restraining MAGA excesses
A 78-year-old narcissist in the final stage of life aligned with a band of self-conscious revolutionaries seeking in their own fevered minds to save civilization are not going to be deterred much by public-opinion polls
This is a very personal fight against people whose opposition to American Greatness cannot be tolerated for long

A Decade Without Justice: The Unsolved Murder of Jody Kilgore
Jody Kilgore was murdered just outside his home on Spring Court in Crawfordville
but the person responsible for his death remains unidentified—and his family remains heartbroken
“I just wish there was something I could do before anything happens to me,” said Jody’s mother
Not a day goes by that the Kilgore family doesn’t think about Jody and the life he should still be living
When I visited them back in October for the anniversary of his death
they were honoring his memory—still hoping for the closure they’ve never received
“It seems like it’s poked in a corner somewhere and nobody’s doing any work on it,” Gladys said
Gladys Kilgore describes her son as kind and gentle—a man who enjoyed fishing and spent time with his mother regularly
“I still beg and cry and hope that they’ll soon find who or mostly why,” she said
Captain Brett Surace with the Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the case is still open and being actively investigated
“There’s been hundreds of man hours put into this,” Surace said
and we’re really looking for the public’s help on this.”
believes someone in the community holds the key to solving this case
“The biggest thing is just knowing that it could be somebody we know,” she said
“It could be somebody that we see maybe on a daily basis or every now and then—someone that has no heart whatsoever.”
the pain of Jody’s death is as raw as ever for his family
“I’ll wake up in the middle of the night thinking I’m going to see Jody tomorrow,” Gladys said
That’s one thing that hurts me more than anything.”
The Kilgore family says they won’t stop searching for the truth
If you have any information that could help investigators
please contact the Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office

The Once On This Island Tony nominee took to Instagram to share her struggle
Tony nominee Hailey Kilgore took to Instagram April 24 to share a health update with her fans following her sudden departure from Broadway's Hadestown earlier this month at the Walter Kerr Theatre
who joined the Hadestown company in January
withdrew from the long-running production earlier this month due to unspecified health concerns
Kilgore elaborated on the situation in the following statement
Broadway has been one of the biggest blessings in my life
It is where I started and it changed the trajectory of my entire life
From the minute Once On This Island closed
"When I was approached to do Hadestown after seven years of living in the TV & film world
I had been experiencing some concerning and confusing illness symptoms before my run even started
In the spirit of the theatre I decided 'the show must go on' and that I would try to tough it out (even at times against Dr.'s advice)
I went to urgent care with flu-like symptoms a couple days later and ended up in the hospital
I received Dr.'s orders that I had to end my run of the show immediately while we focus on treatment
Short-term sacrifice for lifelong success.
I want to thank the producers and creative team for this opportunity
A MASSIVE thank you to the beautiful cast and crew who kept me going when I was onstage and off
"Hadestown really re-ignited my spark as an actress and an all around human being
I will never forget how you all made me feel
"PLEASE give extra love to KC Dela Cruz (superwoman!!
And your new Eurydice!) She is as much of an amazing actress and performer as she is a person
As noted by Kilgore, since her departure, the role of Eurydice has been played by KC Dela Cruz
who will continue in the role through May 4. Myra Molloy will join the company as Eurydice beginning May 6
and hope to welcome her back to Broadway with open arms once she is ready
Gail Kriegel's new play follows a family affected by mental illness
The Tony-winning Best Musical continues at the Walter Kerr Theatre
Noah Himmelstein will direct Matthew Puckett's original musical
Neumann is the Tony nominated choreographer behind Hadestown and Swept Away
one Tony winner is playing the trumpet while the other is channeling Madame Rose
Due to the expansive nature of Off-Broadway

Nebraska passed away peacefully in his sleep December 22
Mark graduated in 1976 from Jamesville-Dewitt Central School in Dewitt
New York where he was a star wrestler and letter recipient
Mark moved with his parents and siblings to Lincoln
Nebraska in 1977 at the age of 19 from Syracuse
It was in Lincoln at Woodlawn Estates swimming pool
that he first set eyes on a young woman in a white bikini with long brown hair
and said to him “I’m going to marry that girl someday” to which Dan replied “Yeah right
Mark indeed married that young woman named Christie on December 23
They were married in the chapel at Lincoln General Hospital (now Bryan LGH West)
including the pastor who performed their wedding ceremony
A little over nine months later in October 1979 they welcomed their first daughter
Followed four years later by their second daughter
Mark earned his Associates Degree in Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning from Southeast Community College Milford campus in 1981
and something he enjoyed doing and took great pride in over his 43-year career
Over the span of his career he taught many HVAC classes
Mark ended his long-time career when he retired in January 2024 from Southeast Community College Lincoln campus where he was in charge of the HVAC systems in their entirety for the past 11 years
It has been said more than once that Mark likely forgot more about heating and air conditioning than most will ever even learn about it
While Mark enjoyed his career there was one thing he loved more and that was his family
Mark loved his family with every fiber of his being
Mark enjoyed his little family and was excited each time his daughters gave him a grandchild
He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and had a special bond with each one of them
In April 2024 he was over the moon to welcome his first great-grandson whom he bragged about to anyone who would listen
In 2017 Mark lost his wife of almost 40 years
This was a difficult time for him but he leaned on his family and made it through
There was not a day that went by that Mark did not talk about the love of his life and he looked forward to the day they would meet again
After retiring in January 2024 Mark took up an old hobby of his
He enjoyed working on models while watching Antiques Roadshow and snuggling his pug
A little-known fact about Mark is that he was an amazing harmonica player and could play along to most songs on the radio
Mark was a lifelong Cleveland Browns and Nebraska Husker fan
He enjoyed riding his Harley and taking his grandkids on rides around town
but he never forgot the feeling of being on a Harley and flying down the highway
Mark is survived by his daughters Carla Kilgore and Pamela Lowery (Joe Ganz)
Life Celebration Gathering will be from 3-5 on Saturday January 4

From the moment Kamala Harris lost to Donald Trump last November (along with her party losing control of the U.S
about the best strategy for fighting Trump 2.0 and regaining some positive momentum
There have been three areas of disagreement
by my reckoning: Should Democrats have a strategically selective response to what Trump is doing
Should Democrats appeal to 2024 Trump voters with messages that concede some ground to Republicans and/or stress points of agreement
And should Democrats conduct a sort of internal purge to highlight fresher or younger leadership options for the future
Illinois’s Democratic governor, JB Pritzker, scorched Donald Trump’s administration on Sunday night
calling for “mass protests” and declaring that Republicans “cannot know a moment of peace” during a fiery speech in New Hampshire that immediately sparked presidential speculation
“It’s time to fight everywhere and all at once,” Pritzker said to a ballroom filled with Democratic activists
“Never before in my life have I called for mass protests
The billionaire heir to the Hyatt hotel fortune addressed more than 800 people at the New Hampshire Democratic party’s annual McIntyre-Shaheen dinner — a state traditionally crucial to the early cycle of presidential primaries and a launching pad for anyone with White House ambitions
To say that Pritzker pulled no punches is an understatement. He compared the conduct of the current administration to those who ruled Nazi Germany and czarist Russia. Additionally, he went out of his way to rule out pivots on hot-button issues, as The Advocate observed:
He also confronted the scapegoating of transgender youth
saying Democrats lost voters not because they defended vulnerable communities but because too many leaders lacked the guts to do it boldly
“Those same do-nothing Democrats want to blame our losses on our defense of Black people
of immigrants — instead of their own lack of guts and gumption,” he said to loud applause
Pritzker is following, or perhaps even personifying, a hoary tradition dating back at least to Democrats during the George W. Bush administration who styled themselves as progressives or populists, arguing that the party’s chief problem is a lack of spine among its politicians
It was the chief contention of the Bush-era band of “netroots” lefty bloggers
As Republican extremism shot through the roof with the advent of the MAGA movement
Democrats who took the conventional approach of seeking to occupy the abandoned center of the ideological spectrum were routinely denounced by those who believed counter-mobilization and professions of a willingness to “fight back” — or just fight
period — were uniquely capable of appealing both to the party base and to authenticity-seeking swing voters
The mood of grassroots Democrats right now
and the objective horror of what Trump and his people are doing
have created the perfect atmosphere for Fight Club messaging
And it’s hard to imagine anyone exceeding Pritzker’s combativeness
We will soon know if others emulate or attempt to outdo Pritzker in promising total war

In a speech that invoked much of his campaign rhetoric
Trump within minutes criticized Biden’s presidency
“How the hell did that guy ever become president
After criticizing polling companies that show his numbers sinking and claiming they poll more Democrats than Republicans to account for his low approval rating
Trump asked the crowd in Michigan to take a “poll.”
Trump also granted an interview to ABC’s Terry Moran, and it, too, had a retro feel: “Throughout the interview, Trump repeatedly accused former president Joe Biden of incompetence and blamed his predecessor for myriad challenges facing his administration.”
And on Truth Social came this blame-shifting exercise on the shaky economy direct from the 47th president himself:
and companies are starting to move into the USA in record numbers
but we have to get rid of the Biden “Overhang.” This will take a while
Now this would have made perfect sense had Trump taken office with anything like a normal transition and Day One agenda
He could have eased into another Trump era as the president-elect most swing voters seemed to have wanted: one who would restore the smoothly operating economy and immigration-enforcement procedures the Biden administration had screwed up
That might have extended the public-opinion honeymoon every new president enjoys
giving his appointees and the new Republican trifecta in Congress plenty of runway to carefully plan their first exercises of power
and ensuring that any turbulence could be attributed to the lingering effects of the previous regime’s mis-government
has a new administration taken office more determined to own the country
It’s fair to speculate as to why that choice was made
Perhaps they wanted the multiplier effect of shock and awe to demoralize federal employees and the new team’s perceived enemies
Plausibly they wanted to get as much done as possible before judicial orders and midterm elections undermined their power
There was also something almost pornographic in Team Trump’s desire to thrill the MAGA base by nihilistically breaking as many things
the decision to make the first 100 days of Trump 2.0 an extension of his megalomanic personality isn’t compatible with blaming the previous long-gone administration of Joe Biden for anything happening right now
It will become even more ludicrous as mishaps clearly attributable to Trump’s radical change of direction occur down the road
That’s particularly true in economic policy where the “soft landing” of inflation-free growth was within reach and perhaps in hand when the 47th president took office — a placid and benevolent condition of things that Trump blew up as quickly and violently as he could with a trade war nobody but him seemed to want
As Vox’s Zack Beauchamp observes
Trump’s reckless start will likely erode his ability to remake American democracy into an instrument for his authoritarian goals: “‘We should thank [our] lucky stars that Trump chose to do this in the most stupid way possible,’ says Lucan Way
a political scientist at the University of Toronto who studies democratic backsliding.”
and it’s too late to go back and pretend we’re still living in the shadow of Joe Biden’s presidency
Kilgore took the helm of the USWNT in the early fall of 2023 and remained in that position after the hiring of Hayes in November of that year. She was the head coach for 14 matches until the arrival of Hayes in May of 2024, a span of almost nine months, and compiled a record of 10 wins, one loss and three draws while leading the team to championships at the 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup and the 2024 SheBelieves Cup, helping set the stage for the USA’s gold medal run this past summer in France.
Kilgore, the first American-born woman to earn a U.S. Soccer Pro license, also has an UEFA “A” Coaching License. She earned her U.S. Soccer “A” License in 2010. In 2022, she was a FIFA Women’s Development Program mentee and a mentee in U.S. Soccer’s SheChampions Mentorship Program, presented by Volkswagen. In 2023, she was a SheChampions mentor in the program.
The Trump administration’s battle with the federal judiciary is one of the most prominent political stories of the year and also arguably the most fraught one
insofar as judges are the main barrier to the 47th president’s radical policies and virtually unlimited vision of executive power
This fight is playing out in courthouses across the country and will likely culminate in landmark decisions by the U.S
Supreme Court with its conservative majority and three Trump-appointed justices
But on a separate track, the months and years just ahead will offer Trump a fresh and final opportunity to shape that same judiciary. And to the extent that the MAGA ideology is now focused so intensely on repudiating “activist judges” (you know
those who insist on limits to the president’s Article II powers)
his ability to replace them when they retire with loyal foot soldiers enjoying lifetime tenures will be an important part of the Trump legacy — a sort of “court packing” scheme of his own
albeit one that is entirely constitutional
On that separate track, Trump has now made his first federal judicial appointment of 2025, to the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, as Reuters reports:
President Donald Trump announced late on Thursday his first judicial nomination since returning to the White House as he moved to appoint a lawyer serving under Tennessee’s Republican attorney general to a seat on a federal appeals court
Trump said in a social media post that he is nominating Whitney Hermandorfer
who has clerked for three members of the U.S
to fill a vacancy on the Cincinnati-based 6th U.S
The seat became available for him to fill after Democratic President Joe Biden’s own nominee to the 6th Circuit failed to secure confirmation before he left office
following fierce opposition from Tennessee’s two Republican senators
Biden appointed 228 federal judges (including one Supreme Court justice and 45 Court of Appeals judges)
basically matching the 226 judges Trump appointed during his first term
though Trump did have a better record at the higher levels of the judiciary (three Supreme Court justices and 54 Court of Appeals judges)
Another long-range dynamic, of course, is that Team Trump is seeking to shape and perhaps restrict what you might call the “supply chain” for judicial candidates via his campaign of intimidation against elite law firms
whoever wins the presidency in 2028 will have a good chance to bend or break the judicial branch for years to come

It’s appropriate that Donald Trump will mark the 100th day since his second presidential inauguration with one of his signature MAGA rallies — indeed
where he had his last campaign rally of the 2024 presidential election 175 days ago
he did win a popular-vote plurality and a battleground-state sweep that put the results beyond question
There were also signs of cracks in the Democratic voting coalition
they could create their own governing coalition after failing to win a majority of the popular vote for 20 years
Trump had a basic choice to make in planning his second administration
He could have moved cautiously to consolidate his support
extend the public-opinion honeymoon any presidential-election winner invariably enjoys
and convince a skeptical and fearful country that Trump 2.0 would represent the sort of return to normalcy that Joe Biden once promised but could not provide
This approach might have sent the wounded Democrats into an extended wilderness and made MAGA Republicanism into the greatest political success story of the 21st century
to run wild through the federal bureaucracy in search less of budget savings than of making federal agencies as dysfunctional as possible
Even as each and every one of these actions has had its own negative impact on Trump’s public support
the 47th president has contemptuously pushed aside opportunities to moderate the pace and intensity of his agenda
While polls show Trump bleeding support on almost every issue and in particular losing the independents who were so crucial to his 2024 victory, there’s something even worse about how he’s conducted himself during the last 100 days. All the light and heat and noise and fear and chaos he has engendered has put Joe Biden very far in the rear-view window of public perceptions
It’s now Trump’s unsatisfactory economy; Trump’s executive power grabs; Trump’s disorderly world; Trump’s despised and privacy-violating federal government; Trump’s arrogant
wealthy elites; Trump’s contempt for the struggles of working people — it’s Trump who’s in the news each morning
to the point that he can no longer embody the chronic hunger and thirst of the American people for change
And that’s very bad news for his party in both 2026 and 2028
and for any hopes he had of leaving office with the mantle of “greatness” he so desires
even people who share a lot of the administration’s goals are concluding he’s simply going too far
Even if he had enough mental clarity and self-discipline to build an authoritarian regime
that used state power to make a temporary majority permanent
he’s lost the temporary majority before he rightly possessed it
So Trump’s trajectory is right back toward the fever swamps from whence he arose in 2015 and into which he fell back again after January 6
