Kingman Residents & Stakeholders Raise Funds to Rename Rancho Santa Fe to Flying Fortress Parkway
AZ – The City of Kingman will move forward with renaming the new I-40 interchange
following a successful community-led fundraising effort to cover the full cost of the change
residents were invited to participate in a name selection survey
which presented four options for consideration
including maintaining the name Rancho Santa Fe
The name pays tribute to Kingman’s deep-rooted military aviation history and the legacy of the B-17 Flying Fortress bombers once stationed at the Kingman Army Airfield during World War II
The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) required $6,326 to implement the name change
Per direction from the Kingman City Council
no additional tax dollars were allocated to the project
making the name change entirely contingent on community fundraising
the full amount was successfully raised by residents and local stakeholders
the City will begin coordinating with ADOT to initiate the official renaming process and install updated signage

MARANA, Ariz. (KGUN) — High school junior Katie Holmes was on the way to a Future Business Leaders of America conference in Tucson last Tuesday when
an SUV crashed into the school bus Holmes and about 40 others were on
All of the passengers on the bus were taken to Tucson hospitals
Holmes is continuing her recovery at Banner University Medical Center
Julie Holmes describes her daughter as an overachiever
“Katie has been exceptional since she was really little.”
Katie Holmes is already working towards her Associate’s Degree in Business
which her mom says she plans to complete by the time she graduates high school
It was a business competition she was supposed to compete in last week
She and the other students and staff on the bus to the competition were traveling from Kingman
teaching her kindergarten class at the time of the crash
“I got a call from an unknown number and I swiped it off
because I didn’t know who it was and I was teaching,” Julie Holmes said
we’ve been in an accident and I’m hurt,” Julie says her daughter told her over the phone
She says Katie has a significant loss of tissue and loss of mobility in her right arm
“All the children walked away from this alive
Katie could have lost all mobility in her fingers,” Julie said
“While she lost all this flesh and some muscle and bone
Julie says they have seen an outpouring of support from both the Tucson and Kingman communities
“The number of people who reached out to help those kids was amazing,” she said
20 years ago – everybody has messaged and been so supportive."
Katie found out she qualified for the National Future Business Leaders of America conference this summer in Anaheim
Her goal is to be well enough to compete in it
“That is her heart’s desire is just to be there and achieve everything she can achieve and show everybody what she’s got,” Julie Holmes said
Julie Holmes is encouraging people to donate blood
they can’t help the people who come in during an emergency,” she said
She and her friends and family are also working to advocate for increased school bus safety measures
Corrections & Clarifications: A previous version of this article incorrectly stated where New Kingman-Butler is located
And what Arizona city would make that list
A new rankings report from 24/7 Wall St. claims to have found the worst place in each state to live
and New Kingman-Butler was identified as the worst city to live in Arizona
If you thought this meant Kingman, you'd be wrong, too. The two places are different. Kingman is a historic town in northwest Arizona that travelers typically pass through on their way to Las Vegas
and New Kingman-Butler is an unincorporated town located about 20 minutes north of Kingman
Travel: This Arizona city is a bucket list travel destination next to towns in Fiji and Egypt
Where is New Kingman-Butler?New Kingman-Butler is often considered part of the greater Kingman area
Children in the town usually attend schools within the Kingman Unified School District
The name "New Kingman" comes from (you guessed it) the town's proximity to Kingman
It was the name of the original real estate development
but the first part of its name is seldom used by residents today
The town is usually referred to as just "Butler," except when it's mentioned in a historical context
there have been several attempts to annex Butler into the city of Kingman
partially because parts of Butler do not have a developed sanitary sewer system
Some residents and buildings have individual septic tanks and it could be costly to develop and connect a sewer system to Butler
Why was Butler ranked the worst city to live in?Wall St
24/7 determined Butler was the worst state to live in from data on five different categories: poverty rate
drug-induced mortality rate and total population
Here's how Butler compares to Arizona as a whole:

Impressive enough in his two starts to prompt much thought about a crack at the 2,000 Guineas
Juddmonte's Cosmic Year instead went to Newmarket for a gentler education on Friday and duly stayed on track in the Listed King Charles II Stakes
As he had at Sandown in September and at Kempton on his return in April
the Harry Charlton-trained son of Kingman and Passage Of Time travelled with purpose throughout the deep seven-furlong test
the 6-4 favourite settled the contest with a bit in hand inside the final furlong and had 1 1/2 lengths to spare over Marvelman at the line
Harry Charlton gave the lowdown afterwards
“The race didn't pan out exactly how you would have wanted it to
Ryan said he thought they were all going to go that way
but they didn't and he wished he would have followed them as he would have been more impressive if he had that lead to the one pole,” he explained
“He has not handled the dip perfectly
but Ryan liked the way he knuckled down in the final furlong
Barry [Mahon] and Prince Khalid's family have made the right call in that they had three horses that could have run in the 2,000 Guineas–Ryan said he could see why I didn't want to come here for a quick ground 2,000 Guineas.”
“Oisin had said this before and Ryan said he would be quite comfortable trying the quicker ground when meeting the rising ground at Ascot,” he added
“We have come here with the view to going to the Irish Guineas
I think the plan will still be to go to Ireland and I think that will suit better
You get a good pace there and you can ride them a bit differently
Whether that leads on to a St James's Palace Stakes
and results of the 2,000 Guineas tomorrow.”

businesses and best practices for creating an entrepreneurial mindset
“Planes on the Plains.” That is a fitting theme for Kingman County

Kingman County is also the site of another pioneering effort: Kansas’s first-ever Connecting Entrepreneurial Communities Conference
Leslie Schrag is economic development director for the City of Kingman
She was born in Kingman and built her career in south central Kansas

Schrag became Kingman’s economic development director in January
she learned about a new project in Kansas: The inaugural Connecting Entrepreneurial Communities conference
The idea for this conference was inspired by similar conferences in other states
K-State Research and Extension community vitality specialist Nancy Daniels explored the possibility of conducting such a conference in Kansas
A coalition of state organizations came together to make it happen
supported by a Networked for Change grant from Network Kansas
Connecting Entrepreneurial Communities is not your typical conference
The program is intentionally interactive and immersive in the community
Participants will be moving around and visiting local businesses
this conference is targeted specifically to be held in a rural community
After the planning committee sent out an invitation for communities to host
Kingman was selected as the site of the inaugural conference in 2025
Courtland has been tabbed to host the 2026 conference
“This is about strengthening the community and showcasing what we have locally,” Schrag said
Immersive break-out sessions will take place in local businesses
“Kingman’s Main Street is four blocks long,” Schrag said
Topics for the breakouts include entrepreneurship
strategies and connections to grow one’s business
enhance marketing and confidently navigate legal requirements for the business
the purpose is to promote rural communities while highlighting people
community leaders and resource providers are invited to attend
Participants will see Kingman’s small businesses working together in creative ways
modeling a change from competition to collaboration
several small businesses have come together for shared marketing and mutual benefit
six of our small boutique businesses sponsored what they called Boo-Tique Bounce,” Schrag said
they were entered into a drawing for a grand prize.”
This has helped spark a renewal of downtown businesses
which will be highlighted during the conference
“We’ve put a lot into our downtown,” Schrag said
“We’re working with the smaller communities around us on lodging,” Schrag said
A discounted rate is available for entrepreneurs

entrepreneur Clyde Cessna lived here in Kingman County
Before ultimately founding the Cessna Aircraft Corporation in Wichita
he grew up on a farm near the unincorporated town of Rago in rural Valley Township

Kingman is also promoting the aviation theme by placing airplane sculptures in the towns
Norwich and Cunningham have new plane sculptures and a larger one is coming to Kingman
That’s a fitting theme for Kingman County and the pioneering spirit which is leading this community to host the inaugural Connecting Entrepreneurial Communities conference

Shelley Liberto’s son Bobby Liberto was one of the students from Kingman High School that was in the bus while a SUV crashed into it on Tuesday
The school bus was from the Kingman Unified School District and several people had to be taken to nearby medical centers
I’m so lucky to be here today,” Shelley Liberto said
Bobby is 16 years old and a junior in high school
He was heading to a Future Business Leaders of America conference at the Tucson Convention Center
“He said he doesn’t even know how his hand ended out the window,” Liberto said
Shelley said Bobby has life-sustaining injuries and just had a traumatic partial hand amputation
She said he also had reconstructive surgery on his left hand and elbow
“This is going to be a long extended life-time situation that he’s going to have to bear for the rest of his life,” Liberto said
Just last week Shelley also had surgery and is having to skip treatments to be in Tucson
“My pain is nothing compared to what he’s going through
so I don’t worry about my pain or suffering,” she said
She said Bobby has been strong throughout everything and has been asking about how his friends are doing
“Just a very strong kid and he’s resilient
and he’s going to bounce back and he’s going to be bigger than anybody’s ever seen,” she described him
Spencer Hendry came up with the idea to collect donations for the people injured and their families
She said they’re taking donations in the form of gift cards
She was also in FBLA when she was in high school
so she feels like she had a personal connection to the situation
“You’re so excited for state competition and then having that taken away from you especially with a major accident and all of the kind of emotional side that comes with that can be hard to deal with,” Hendry said
A box will be located outside nine locations
One of them is at Tucson ER and Hospital on Broadway and Swan
She also told us people can drop off at Northwest Fire District stations 334 on Wade Road
and Hendry said you can donate at Station 379 on Shannon Road and Station 380 on Magee Road
you can also donate to the Tucson Fire Department
They are collecting at Station 1 on South Fire Central Place
“My husband being a fire captain and then family that are first responders
it’s just so important to give back to our community and the people that visit it," Hendry said
Hendry is collecting donations until this Sunday
thinking about his friends and those affected before himself
“He’s just glad you all survived and he’s happy and that’s the most important thing,” she said
