A teen was shot after being tackled by a Virginia State Police trooper during a pursuit in the Kings Park West neighborhood early this morning (Tuesday)
The trooper encountered the 16-year-old boy while investigating a vehicle that had reportedly fled from a Fairfax City police traffic stop near Burke Station Road and Main Street at around 12:43 a.m.
according to VSP spokesperson Matthew Demlein
The vehicle was registered to an address in the 9600 block of Maury Road
the trooper was joined by two Fairfax County K-9 units,” the VSP said in a press release
they saw a 16-year-old juvenile male near the suspect vehicle and gave commands to stop
The juvenile instead took off on foot.”
the trooper “tackled” the teen
and a gun shot was fired during the ensuing struggle
While the VSP didn’t specify the source of the shot, assisting Fairfax County police officers told a dispatcher that the shot was fired by state police in a wooded area behind a house, according to scanner traffic
The teen was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital with injuries described by state police as non-life-threatening
No injuries were reported to the trooper or FCPD officers
The VSP says the teen “is a known gang associate” with outstanding warrants for auto larceny and a probation violation
“Additional charges are pending,” state police said
“The 16-year-old is being investigated for unauthorized use of a vehicle.”
The VSP Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Fairfax Field Office is investigating the shooting
Kings Park's Jack Salva (16) looks to get around West Islip's Kevin Cinotti (14) in the fourth quarter during the Suffolk boys lacrosse game on Tuesday April 29
Down two with less than five minutes remaining
The Kingsmen had just allowed three unanswered goals to undefeated West Islip to open the fourth quarter and found themselves trailing by one
But no game is ever over when senior captain Jack Salva is on the field
Salva responded with a missile into the top left corner and scored another goal less than a minute later for Kings Park
which scored five fourth-quarter goals in an 11-9 comeback win at West Islip Tuesday
the fourth quarter has been our quarter,” Salva said
“Obviously we’re working on playing complete games
but in the fourth quarter we always find a way to come back and finish the game.”
represented a back-and-forth game that saw five different lead changes as neither team led by more than two goals
Salva finished with a game-high seven points
Senior Chris Davis scored the go-ahead goal with 3:15 remaining before senior Billy Berhalter threaded a perfect feed to junior Matt Corrado to give Kings Park a 10-8 lead
West Islip senior Derek Busking came alive in the fourth quarter
logging all four of his points which included a bruising goal through numerous defenders to cut Kings Park’s lead to one
That’s when Kings Park FOGO Andrew Laviano showed how and why he’s so important to this team
The junior won his 19th faceoff — finishing 19-for-23 — to give Kings Park (10-1) possession and eventually an insurance goal from senior Luke Griffin off a great pass from junior Aidan Barbosa against an open net with 22 seconds left
“I had to adapt to the faceoff guy and the refs,” Laviano said
“I’m able to do that with the help of my wings and by doing what I know I can do on the X.”
Junior goalie Nick Vicinanza controlled the cage to the tune of 18 saves
Four of the first five goals by West Islip (10-1) — with three coming from junior Chase Busking — came courtesy of follow-up shots after a save from Vicinanza
it was wrapped from there,” Vicinanza said
Laviano pointed to Kings Park’s desire to send a message that its only loss — an 8-7 result to Mount Sinai on April 17 — was simply a blip
Kings Park has won all three of its games since

Rona Hitlin-Mason is afraid for the future she leaves behind for her grandchildren
The “Hands Off” protests were held in 1,200 locations across every state
to local gatherings like the Woodleigh Chase “pop-up rally,” as Hitlin-Mason called it
“Many cars that went by honked in support and that was lovely,” Hitlin-Mason said
People were very glad to do something.”
Hitlin-Mason said she was in college during the Civil Rights Movement of the mid-20th century but said she’s generally “not a big protestor” and has never frequented rallies
“This feels like something where I can’t sit around and do nothing,” Hitlin-Mason said
According to Hitlin-Mason, many of the residents at Woodleigh Chase are immediately concerned with the Trump administration’s impact on the Social Security Administration (SSA), which has seen dramatic job cuts in recent days even as the administration promises there will be no benefit reductions
While residents at a senior living facility in Fairfax — the fifth richest county in America — likely won’t be the first in dire straits
Hitlin-Mason says many residents are concerned for others around the country and for their grandchildren
They worry that their efforts to invest and save money to ease the financial burdens of caregiving on their children now won’t be enough
“I’m afraid,” said Hitlin-Mason
“During the financial crisis in 2008 there were experts in the government to help us get through that
which was organized after Trump’s first inauguration in 2017 and mostly focused on criticizing Republican leadership
Hitlin-Mason said the “Hands Off” protest is a message for Democratic leaders as well as Republicans
“This is about pushing Democratic leadership and some Republicans,” Hitlin-Mason said
“What I’ve been struck by personally is when Republicans were in the minority during the Biden and Obama administrations
I kept hearing nothing could go through because Republicans were stopping it
all I’m hearing is ‘we’re the minority
Hitlin-Mason said she’s been impressed by the leadership of Democratic leaders like Cory Booker — who broke a Senate record last week with a speech criticizing federal funding cuts — and Jamie Raskin — who spoke at the main “Hands Off” rally in D.C
she was more critical of leaders she worries are sitting back and waiting for the next midterm elections
“My fear is we do not have two years,” Hitlin-Mason said
so I’m very concerned about the country’s future.”

A new restaurant aiming to blend popular American dishes with classic Afghan flavors has begun serving diners
Noosh Grill kicked off its soft opening at 9573 Braddock Road in Twinbrooke Centre in the Kings Park West neighborhood today (Wednesday)
bringing a family-inspired Halal eatery to the area
“[The owners] are Afghan Americans who grew up surrounded by the warmth of family meals,” said a spokesperson for Federal Realty
a place filled with the same sense of comfort and connection at the heart of everything they serve.”
The menu is built on items that owners Rasool Sardar and Fahim Ghiacy call “American favorites”: smash burgers
Many of Noosh’s offerings incorporate flavors from their Afghan roots
resulting in items like the Chapli Bowl and the Masala Chicken and Cheese
specialties offered at the eatery include hand-marinated grilled chicken and two signature sauces
With today’s soft opening, the restaurant — located between the former Angie’s Restaurant spot and a Virginia ABC store — will be open daily from 11 a.m.-9 p.m
The addition of Noosh Grill brings the shopping center up to nine different places to grab a bite
ranging from dine-in eateries like Outback Steakhouse and Waraku Japanese Restaurant to quick options like Subway and Popeye’s
Twinbrooke Centre has also seen the addition of other tenants in recent months, including the youth soccer facility KidsUnited
The sudden death of a 43-year-old school employee and father is spreading shockwaves through Fairfax County

A GoFundMe for Matt's family had raised more than $51,000 as of press time
worked in Oakton's Waples Mill Elementary School's Student Age Child Care program
He also worked with disabled children at the Kilmer Center
"My kids and so many others learned and grew under Matt's watch," writes the founder of the Rice family GoFundMe campaign
"He was always busy with his landscaping business or donating his time and resources to set up events and help others
and he brought the fun to every activity."
May 25 at the McLean Bible Church at 10 a.m.

Angie’s Restaurant will permanently close its doors after this weekend
omelets and more in the Kings Park West neighborhood
The Greek and Italian diner’s last day of business will be this Sunday (May 26)
Another said the team opted to close because the landlord for Twinbrooke Shopping Center
the business said the decision to close by the end of May “has not been easy” and comes “with mixed emotions.”
“Ongoing contract negotiations with Federal Realty unfortunately resulted in unreasonably high lease rates
leaving us no choice but to close,” the notice says
“…It has truly been an honor to serve you and be a part of this community
We here at Angie’s appreciate our loyal customers
hope that you have enjoyed your time with us
and we wish you and your family well.”
Federal Realty, which acquired Twinbrooke for $33.8 million in 2021, declined to comment. As of this writing, Angie’s Restaurant was still shown on a site plan for the shopping center as occupying the 2,750-square-foot space at 9569 Braddock Road
Federal does not comment on lease related matters,” a spokesperson said
Though the closure notice expresses gratitude for the community’s support “throughout the past twenty-three years,” an archived Washington Post story suggests Angie’s Restaurant has been around for almost twice that long
the business was started by the eponymous Angie with the assistance of her younger sister
19 years earlier “just to help out a little.” By the 1990s
Elles was running the show after Angie returned to their native Greece around 1989
said they had been dining at the restaurant for at least 15 years
Her go-to dish was the souvlaki in the form of either a sandwich
The Post described the service as “plenty friendly” and “full of banter,” while praising the breakfast food — including an omelet
French toast and the Angie’s Special with eggs
meat and toast or a biscuit — as “a nice way to ease into Saturday morning.”
Though the restaurant’s website no longer appears to be functional
its Yelp page boasts a 3.8 average rating with recent reviews highlighting the “delicious” food and “friendly and attentive” service
and good size portions,” the latest review on May 18 said
“Wonderful place to come for a fantastic
it’s easy to miss — but I would definitely recommend it!”
Angie’s Restaurant is open from 11 a.m
For its final two days of business this weekend

The business can primarily be found in New Jersey
but it also has upcoming franchises in New York
“Our goal is to not only provide a fun and enriching soccer experience
but to positively impact the lives of young participants in a lasting way,” the KidsUnited Fairfax team said

The new year will bring some upgrades to the trails at Royal Lake Park
With a two-year-long design and permitting process nearing completion, the Fairfax County Park Authority is accepting public comments through Jan
27 on an environmental review of the planned trail-network improvements at the park in Kings Park West
Construction on the $1.3 million project is expected to start in early 2025 and conclude before the end of 2026
In order to start construction, the park authority is seeking a categorical exclusion from the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)
the law that typically requires projects receiving federal funding to get an environmental assessment or impact statement approved
The categorical exclusion allows that requirement to be waived for projects found to not have a “significant effect on the human environment.”
The proposed trail improvements at Royal Lake, which are being supported in part by Covid recovery funds from the American Rescue Plan Act, aren’t expected to affect wetlands or waters
a consultant hired by the park authority said in a Dec
13 letter to the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation
Residents of surrounding communities have been engaged in the project
A 46-acre park that centers around a 38-acre lake, Royal Lake Park has two main entrances at 5344 Gainsborough Drive and 5216 Pommeroy Drive
a multi-purpose athletic field and picnic areas

A 70-year-old woman died last week from injuries dealt by an SUV that hit her outside the Kings Park neighborhood in West Springfield half a month earlier
On Nov. 15, Springfield resident Ly Tran was using the Braddock Road crosswalk to go from Kings Park Drive to the north side, which is the entrance to the Parkwood Baptist Church, the Fairfax County Police Department said in a news release today
The crossing requires passing six lanes of traffic
plus three turn lanes with a crosswalk marked only by two parallel lines and a narrow grass median
the driver of a 2012 Toyota Rav4 turning right from Kings Park Drive onto eastbound Braddock Road struck her
Tran was transported to a hospital with injuries that were not initially considered life-threatening
15 with failure to yield to pedestrians with the right of way
“Speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash,” the FCPD said
By FFXnow’s count, Tran is now the 30th pedestrian to be killed in a vehicle crash in Fairfax County this year. Virginia data shows 26 fatalities in 2022
but at least one death in November and the three deaths reported in December
a total of 14 pedestrian fatalities were reported in 2021
No other year since the database begins in 2010 recorded more than 17 such deaths in the county

There are no gas stations within park boundaries, though there are limited, seasonal stations on nearby national forest lands. Electric vehicle charging stations may be available near the parks
Fairfax County Public Works and Environmental Services has started construction on a project to improve a watershed in Kings Park West near Burke by restoring eroded stream banks
Part of a plan approved over a decade ago, the Shanes Creek restoration seeks to stabilize the channel and prevent future erosion and degradation along the stream. It will also reconnect the channel to its floodplain and restore native trees and herbaceous planting to promote natural reforestation and a healthy ecosystem, according to a project page
“The project will restore more than 4,800 linear feet of natural channel and about 1,300 linear feet of outfall leading to it,” the project page says
noting that construction work began on April 13
The project requires closures of the trail network leading from nearby residential neighborhoods into Royal Lake Park
“The existing parkland trails within the project boundaries will be closed for the duration of the project to ensure public and worker safety,” the Fairfax County Park Authority said
“Active construction is anticipated to be completed by winter 2023.”
According to DPWES, work on the stream will start at Roberts Road
Trail closures will depend on where construction is underway
“We are attempting to keep as many open as we can while construction is occurring
so there is not a clear map of what is open now [versus what] will be later,” DPWES spokesperson Sharon North said by email
“…We are working to install the fence and signs as we can
The limits of disturbance will be well marked before construction of the stream starts.”
The Board of Supervisors approved a watershed management plan for the Pohick Creek watershed in 2010. The plan called for stream restoration efforts to re-establish those waterways that would help minimize erosion
including planting vegetation to stabilize and protect stream banks

So the defending Suffolk Class A boys basketball champion improved to 7-1 in Suffolk III
“We’ve had some really good success recently,” coach Chris Rube said
you’ve got to qualify for the playoffs.’ You can’t skip steps to success
they will eventually be setting a goal to repeat
“We’ve shown in spurts how good we can be
but we weren’t consistent enough to put it together for a whole game,” Rube said
“I think you saw tonight from start to finish our intensity was there
our discipline was there and our execution was there
Their lead sat at 14-9 heading for the second quarter after Garside

Matonti put on a shooting show in a 1:40 span
The junior combo guard nailed three straight left-side shots from beyond the arc
which really allowed me to get in the zone,” Matonti said
Garside made a free throw 53 seconds into the third for his 15th point — aka No
“It’s definitely an achievement,” Garside said
“But it’s just a testament to all the people that have supported me throughout the years
Thomas Raccomandato topped the Eagles (10-3
7-2) with nine points and Bobby Schwartz grabbed 13 rebounds
The team needs one win for a playoff berth
“We’ve played great all year,” coach Tim Lynch said
tonight we didn’t do the things we wanted to do
But I still have a lot of confidence in this group.”
The city of Newport received a $2.4 million grant to repair the seawall at King Park
improving the area’s resilience against flooding from storms and high tides
"As a coastal community, we're feeling the impacts of increasingly severe weather, from coastal erosion to abnormally high tides, that combined with high winds and flooding are swamping Newport treasures like King Park," Mayor Xay Khamsyvoravong said in a statement. "We need to aggressively pursue every available resource to help Newport make the investments it needs to weather these events. Using this $2.3 million grant from the Infrastructure Bank
we will make King Park more resilient by removing a portion of the existing seawall
These investments will help mitigate the damage that can be caused by flooding events and ensure that King Park will be a beautiful recreational asset for Newport residents and visitors for decades to come."
Newport is one of 20 municipalities receiving grants totaling $12 million from Gov
Dan McKee and the Rhode Island Infrastructure Bank
The money is being pulled from the $16 million Green Bond voters approved in 2022
Newport is receiving the largest grant from this round of recipients to the tune of $2,392,884
the city states the vertical wall on the eastern side of the park is failing
allowing water to spill over the wall during major storms or high tides and causing erosion behind the wall
which compromises the Harbor Walk in that area
It also states erosion on the small beach on the park's west side has negatively impacted public access and jeopardizes the nearby dinghy rack and kayak storage area
Weather effects: Storm batters Newport, Middletown coastlines. Can beaches continue to take the brunt?
the city plans to remove the easternmost portion of the seawall and expand the beach
For the rest of the seawall next to the ball field
the city plans to install a sewer pump station
and another seawall at the far eastern corner of the harbor as well as regrade the bank and install a rip rap wall
the city states it is going to cover the eroded portions with coconut fiber coir logs and cover with beach sand
Traffic came to a standstill in Fairfax County after a fiery crash involving a tractor-trailer and sedan shut down all westbound lanes on I-66 near Nutley Street
Fire crews responded to the scene around 2:00 p.m
after the two vehicles collided on I-66 WB
prompting emergency responders to block off all lanes while they worked to contain the flames
"Fairfax’s Bravest are on scene of a vehicle fire on I-66 WB prior to Nutley Street," the department posted on X
"Crews arrived with one tractor trailer and a sedan that collided."
Officials confirmed one person was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries

symbolizing the “Stone of Hope” being hewn from the “Mountain of Despair.” Reinforcing this motif

closing with Martin Luther King asking his congregation to turn that desire to stand out — to be a drum major — into service to others
King wished aloud not to be remembered for his awards and education
but that he “tried to give his life serving others,” and that he “tried to love and serve humanity.” The message of selflessness embodied in the sermon seemed to be at odds with what was captured on the memorial
Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced his decision to remove the controversial quote by carving striations over the words
which would blend in with the existing artwork
sculptor Lei Yixin returned to modify the memorial and remove the quote
The paraphrased quote is no longer visible

Kings Park's Jaxie Cestone moves the ball in the first quarter during the Suffolk Class A girls basketball quarterfinal against Half Hollow Hills West on Tuesday at Kings Park
Kings Park entered Tuesday as the top seed in the Suffolk Class A girls basketball playoffs
fresh off its Suffolk Conference III championship last season
The Kingsmen faced a team they beat twice in the regular season - but things weren’t exactly going to plan from the start
"We got in our heads in the beginning," said Jaxie Cestone
We are the defending [conference] champs and we wanted to prove ourselves
Host Kings Park held a one-point lead after the first quarter but ended up pulling away from No

"Definitely some nerves," coach Tom Edmundson said
We had a lot of success last year but it was almost like they didn’t have time to think what was happening last year."
in the third quarter and 29-12 in the second half
"We always say that we’re a second-half team," said Ryan Currier
"We knew we had a rough first half and we wanted to win every quarter individually
and really tried to [finish] them late."
King Park’s pressure defense made things uncomfortable for Hills West
"We say defense travels," Cestone said
"You can have an off day shooting but defense is effort
you make a hustle play and it can translate into offense
Edmundson expects a strong second half to carry over to the semifinals
you have to back it up and we’ve been talking about that."
Edmundson added the team celebrated last year’s conference championship just as much as a county title – which he said was the first postseason championship in program history
But this season could be Kings Park’s first true county championship
which comes with a Long Island Class A appearance and possibly more after that
"We’re all really excited and we want to keep this going as long as possible," Currier said
"That’s a big motivator for us so hopefully we’ll be able to do that."

One person was critically injured and a teen is in custody following a stabbing at West Potomac High School in Fairfax County on Wednesday
Investigators say two students got into an argument inside the school
which escalated and resulted in the stabbing and a chaotic scene in the building
All students involved were either 15 or 16 years old
The school was placed on a brief lockdown during the police investigation
with the investigation still active on Wednesday afternoon
Counseling and support services were made available to students
students were not released to their parents
though an early dismissal time was reportedly announced as the investigation continued
School and police leaders held a news conference outside the building
which was livestreamed and received real-time comments from some students
"They sent our parents an email saying not to come get us yet because we're having lunch right now."
An incredulous parent in attendance at the conference noted that if he had come to pick up his daughter at the same time the day before
My daughter is one because she witnessed it
The investigation into the stabbing is ongoing
not only outside but inside the school as well,” Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis said
“The last thing we want as responsible adults is to release emotional groups of students where something retaliatory in nature happens down the street.”
More information is expected to be released

Police have identified the three people killed in a Fairfax County crash Tuesday, July 23.
Salma Monastra and Corey Rogers were among three people killed in a Fairfax County crash.
The 2024 Acura Integra driven by Corey Rogers, 46, of Reston, was heading south on West Ox Road when Rogers failed to negotiate a turn and struck a cement jersey wall at Route 29 in Legato around 3:55 a.m., county police said.
Rogers and his two passengers, Angela Connor, 44, of Reston, and Salma Monastra, 35, of Herndon, were all declared dead at the scene. Detectives believe that speed and narcotics played a role in the crash.

Emergency crews that were already in the park monitoring burnt bushland rushed to the fire at Kings Park Avenue
which was outside of the existing fireground
The blaze came very close to play equipment near Zamia Cafe
That blaze was contained at about 4pm as the arson squad continues to investigate the cause of Tuesday's fires
which police believe were deliberately lit
Surveys are underway to find out if vulnerable flora inside Perth's Kings Park has been lost after a number of suspicious bushfires ripped through the popular nature reserve on Tuesday afternoon
Surveys are underway to determine whether vulnerable flora has been lost
Police believe several fires were deliberately lit in the park
with emergency crews battling to bring them under control
Authorities received reports of a fire at 2:42pm on Tuesday
and the blazes were elevated to a watch and act alert level
It's believed several fires were deliberately lit around the same time in Kings Park

Kings Park is one of WA's most popular tourist attractions
a 400 hectare parcel of mostly native bushland in central Perth which is home to more than 300 species of native plants
The fires were visible from several vantage points across the CBD and Swan River
Smoke from the Kings Park fire was easily visible from Perth's CBD
Most of the park was reopened the public Wednesday morning
but parts of May Drive remain closed and there is no access to the south-west part of the fire site
Bushland near the memorial precinct was most affected
Detective Senior Constable Adrian Yates from the Arson Squad said there were three distinct ignition points
two towards the western side and one near a café at the park
He said the circumstances of the fires were still being investigated
The Kings Park blaze came very close to popular picnic and recreation areas
(Facebook: Salvation Army WA Emergency Services)
"[A] person was identified early in the investigation … at this stage
that person is not in custody and no longer assisting us with our inquiries," he said
we don't have any leads on any potential suspects."
The blazes came perilously close to grass picnic areas
Firefighters work to extinguish a suspicious fire that broke out in Kings Park
Officers are appealing for information and any dash-cam or mobile phone footage taken around the time of the fires
"Our focus today is to do a comprehensive scene examination and it's to identify witnesses early
identify CCTV in the area and hopefully identify a potential suspect," he said
The fire tore through several hectares of native bushland
"Early indication is that those fires all occurred within the space of about an hour."
DFES incident control officer Michael Stewart said 20 firefighters were still on site
and would be working there most of the day
"Any fire in Kings Park we take very seriously," he said
Michael Stewart says firefighters will stay at Kings Park during the day
resourced it accordingly and got it under control within about six hours."
The cause of fire at the nearby Bold Park on Monday is still under investigation
The Kings Park fires come just a day after a blaze ripped through the nearby Bold Park
which is also a highly protected native bush area
Kings Park's environment and infrastructure director Shane Kearney told ABC Radio Perth that while the blazes were now mostly extinguished
fire crews expected to remain at the site until tonight
Firefighters will remain at the scene of the Kings Park bushfires as they investigate the case
He said around six hectares of bush near the memorial precinct were most affected
"There's no vulnerable flora that have been affected
but we still have to do further surveys once the incident phase finishes," he said
"Just looking at photos this morning and the site
most of the under storey is gone — in areas it's just bare earth with medium to tall trees left."
Mr Kearney said the park's environmental team would monitor regeneration towards the start of winter next year
He said it could take three to five years for the areas burnt to regenerate
but it would never look the same as surrounding bush
another blaze was sparked in Kings Park on Wednesday afternoon
The fire was reported near Kings Park Avenue
with a fresh smoke plume seen billowing from bushland in the south-west section of the park
The fire caused smoke to drift across nearby suburbs
Emergency crews which were already in the park monitoring burnt bushland went to the location to put out the new fire
Detective Senior Constable Adrian Yates told ABC Radio Perth they had started investigating that fire too
"Just to see whether or not these fires are connected to the fire from yesterday," he said
Police are combing through CCTV in an effort to find those responsible for the suspicious fires
"When we have multiple fires in a particular area
it is a bit of a concern and obviously we look at all of the fires thoroughly just to see whether or not they are related and trying to establish a link if we can."

We heard a story from a friend of a friend of ours… As we celebrate Spooktober
we’re getting into everything spooky and mysterious about Perth
We’ve explored some of Perth’s most haunted places over HERE
and now we’re looking into some of the peculiar stories we’ve heard about our fair city over the years
The suburbs of Perth are rife with tales of big cats prowling through the night – from the Toodyay Tiger and Dwellingup Panther
and of course a little further south – the beloved Nannup Tiger
enormous cats came to be roaming our suburbs range from the innocuous to the fantastical
Were cougar kittens brought to Australia by US servicemen during the Second World War as mascots
Was there an accident at a travelling circus that caused the cats to escape
Are they actually the last surviving thylacines
Or are they just feral cats that have grown to a giant size
the continued sightings have made the Big Cats an enduring Perth legend
Photo via Bush Heritage
there have been rumours for decades that Kings Park is the site of unholy Satanic rituals
witches and Satanists gather at midnight to commune under moonlight and summon dark forces
The myth has been exacerbated by the untimely deaths of homeless people in the park
as well as the park’s vast area shrouded in darkness
it’s long been claimed that the historic East Perth Cemeteries are home to a coven of witches who
perform dark rituals under the cover of darkness
the first recorded interment was in 1830 – so there’s been plenty of time for dark spirits to linger in the area
We can’t verify any witches covens in the area
but we’ve heard plenty of reports of mysterious sounds emanating from the area in the night…

An age-old legend that transcends geography – around the world you’ll hear of sightings of sasquatches
tales of the yowie have passed through communities for centuries
we also hear about a creature called a woodartji– much like a yowie
bunyips also have their roots in Indigenous folklore and mythology
descriptions vary from dog-sized amphibious creatures to large seal-like creatures
they feed on anything that strays to close to their swampy homes – and are particularly fond of women and children
The South Freo Power Station is a behemoth
a monument of history looming large over CY O’Connor Beach – both in its physical size and the amount of mythos surrounding the building
the station was in use from 1951 until it was decommissioned 1985
In the interceding years it has become increasingly run-down
with each year building on the mythos of the site
There have reportedly been four murders in the building
as well as a number of accidental and tragic deaths
including one as recently as 2016 – and allegedly
some of the now-sealed rooms still feature the bloodied marks of the murders on the walls
claims have floated around about Satanic rituals taking place in the tunnels
with plenty of pentagrams spotted amongst the graffiti
as well as claims that the tunnels extend into a network that spans across Perth
Most of the station’s subterranean levels have been deliberately collapsed and filled with sand and rubble
and entrances barricaded with two-inch steel plate in order to preserve safety – we suspect many of the building’s secrets are buried along with it
If you’ve taken a long late night drive through an isolated road
you may have encountered the phenomena of Min Min
Min Min can vary from faintly glowing to bright enough to illuminate their surrounds
following motorists either from a distance
or keeping pace with their vehicles as they hurtle down the road
Witnesses to the lights describe the Min Min retreating when followed
Some Indigenous communities in the Kimberley attribute the orbs to the spirits of elders watching over Country
while some scientists hypothesise that they are the result of the Fata Morgana mirage: a layer of cold air above the ground that projects lights (like headlights or torches) over great distances
Perhaps this is more apt to our list of hauntings
but there’s been tales for years surrounding the Alkimos Wreck
with rumours that workers were welded inside the ship’s hull during construction and reports of strange sounds and smells throughout its use
It was then used during the Second World War to transport US soldiers and German prisoners of war – it’s said that during this time
a Canadian radio operator working onboard was shot by a crew member
the ship has encountered numerous unusual misfortunes
including running aground multiple times before coming to its final resting place off our coast
Bought and sold eight times during its grounding
each new owner had strangely bad luck befall them – including poor health and bankruptcy
Divers have reported unusual sightings and even the sound of screaming
boats have had inexplicably engine failures in the area and dogs even become agitated when nearby
but we reckon we’ll be keeping our distance

Get out your Geiger counters! According to former servicemen, a radioactive Land Rover has been buried at Leeuwin Barracks in East Fremantle. The vehicle was apparently used on the Montebello Islands during Operation Hurricane: British nuclear weapons tests that included the detonation of a 25 kilotonne plutonium implosion device
the Land Rover made its way back to Perth to be cleaned and put back into service – but when the contamination couldn’t be removed
many legends link back to a network of tunnels beneath the city – by some accounts
Some say the tunnels host satanic rituals (an enduring theme)
fabled Templar treasures… or even lead to a secret lair below the Council House
where you may glimpse a tall figure in the shadows
a shiny medallion glinting in the moonlight
