Hot Rods Flood California’s Central ValleyThe Kingsburg Car Show celebrated its 30th anniversary with a record turnout
John McGannWriter
celebrated its 30th annual car show over the third weekend in April
Nearly 400 cars were in attendance; it was the highest car count the show has ever seen
Situated about half an hour south of Fresno
Kingsburg is home to just over 12,000 people
the Kingsburg Chamber of Commerce closes Draper Street
and several of the intersecting streets for the show participants to park their cars
We made the four-hour drive north from Los Angeles with Lucky Costa and the GasRatz Customs car club
Be sure to check out our photo gallery from the show
It was a little smaller than most of the shows we cover
but the small-town charm of this Central Valley city made it all worthwhile
not only for its scarcity but also for the history of the bank that issued it
Kingsburg derives its name from the nearby Kings River
which itself was named in the early 19th century by Spanish explorers led by Gabriel Moraga
Moraga and his team surveyed much of Northern California and the Central Valley
leaving a legacy that continues to influence today
Kingsburg’s growth was largely driven by its location along the Central Pacific Railroad
making it a hub for commerce and settlement
it had become a favored destination for Swedish immigrants
many of whom contributed to the town’s development
the Kingsburg State Bank transitioned into the First National Bank of Kingsburg (Charter #8409)
marking a significant chapter in the town’s financial history
the First National Bank of Kingsburg operated with the minimum required capital of $25,000
Like many small banks in the Central Valley
what sets this institution apart from its peers is its unique issuance policy
Instead of printing a range of denominations
the bank exclusively issued $50 and $100 notes
These high denominations were primarily held in reserve
with limited circulation – making surviving examples incredibly rare
the First National Bank fell into receivership
its brief but impactful legacy is preserved in the few surviving notes
each of which tells a story of early banking in California
Only two examples of the 1902 $50 National Bank Note from Kingsburg have been recorded in the National Bank Note Census
These notes have made just a handful of appearances at auction

There was no quit for the Golden West High School football team on Friday night at Visalia Community Stadium
And even when Kingsburg grabbed a 34-28 lead with 35 seconds left in the game
to complete a 35-34 comeback victory over seventh-ranked Kingsburg in a 2024 Central Section Division II quarterfinal contest
Senior running back Case Anders scored the game-tying touchdown on a one-yard run at the buzzer and senior kicker Matthew Garza converted the extra-point kick to help the Trailblazers advance to the semifinal round
you know,” Trailblazers head coach Travis Anderson said
“It was a different situation than we have been in all year
It’s been running clocks throughout the year
We haven’t played all four quarters of football because of those running clocks
Our message and our standard were there — finish
We finished and that’s what we preached and our kids did that tonight.”
The Golden West offense had only 27 seconds to work with trailing 34-28
sophomore quarterback Jayden Najera connected with senior receiver Isaac Elias on a six-yard pass but a Kingsburg face mask moved the ball to the Vikings’ 49-yard line and the Trailblazers were in business
Najera lofted a 38-yard bomb to Caden Lawrance
and Golden West was within striking distance at the Kingsburg 11-yard line
there was 9.2 seconds left on the game clock
rumbled toward the end zone and was tackled a yard short for a 10-yard gain despite reaching the ball across the goal line
It appeared time had expired on that play and the game clock ran down to zero but the officials put a second back on the clock because Anders picked up the first down before the final second ticked away
“But we had one second left and all that madness of not getting in there just turned into anger
and he delivered with a one-yard touchdown
making a Kingsburg defender miss before breaking free into the end zone
They worked their butts off and they got me that push

Anders' touchdown tied the playoff showdown at 34-all with no time remaining on the clock
With the temperature dropping to the low 40s
Kingsburg called a timeout to ice Garza on the extra-point try
who scored the game-winning point and also converted a pair of field goals from 22 and 24 yards

Golden West overcame a 10-point halftime deficit and three turnovers to win the Trailblazers’ first playoff game in five years.
Now, the Trailblazers have an opportunity to sweep all four of their Visalia opponents this season.
During East Yosemite League play, Golden West defeated Mt. Whitney 48-0, beat Redwood 23-7 and routed El Diamante 62-0.
CVC is the defending Central Section Division II champion. The No. 3 Cavaliers outlasted No. 7 San Luis Obispo 21-14 in their quarterfinal playoff victory.
Golden West and CVC last played in 2019. That year, the Cavaliers won 18-16 to advance to the Central Section Division III final.
“It’ll be fun,” Anders said. “I know a lot of those kids. They’re going to try to come and work their butts off to beat us. We’re going to work our butts off to beat them. It’ll be a huge game.”

"She was smart. Tried to avoid him going across the street. She knocked on the door. The resident answers. She told the woman what was happening and she called police immediately," Chief Dadian said.
Less than an hour later Chief Dadian says the same person approached two girls on the cross-country team. He waved them over to his car and tried talking to them.
They ran away and reported the incident to police. Within minutes the driver of the car, Efrain Vallejo-Chagolla who lives in Reedley was pulled over for questioning.
"We couldn't determine in either incident that a crime had occurred. He was just waving them over," Chief Dadian said.
In 2014 Vallejo-Chagolla was convicted of indecent exposure. Now police are asking if similar incidents like what happened Monday, took place and were never reported.
"We do want the public to know that we are aware of him. Want the public to be aware of him and he doesn't have any business in Kingsburg," Chief Dadian said.
Chief Dadian wants the community, especially young women to always be aware of their surroundings.
Kingsburg Police detectives are working with the Fresno County District Attorney's Office to see if there's enough evidence to charge Vallejo-Chagolla with a crime.
