City Manager Lee Spell said they shut down The Kingsland Hotel Tuesday, because the hotel owners had not paid the water bill since November of last year. He mentioned the city wasn’t going to keep allowing this and had to cut the water. Spell said it would have been a violation to keep the hotel open after that. Thursday morning, News4JAX saw people moving their belongings out of the hotel, while a police officer watched them. The hotel had trash thrown in different parts and was partially boarded up where there’d been a fire. News4JAX spoke with one of the people who was moving her stuff out Thursday. She didn’t want to be identified and said when the hotel was shut down, she and about 30 other people who lived there were told to leave. Some decided to return Wednesday to get their stuff, but it wasn’t as easy as they thought it would be. “There’s a bunch of us that ended up going to jail for trespassing,” she said. The woman said she didn’t spend much time in jail, as a relative bailed her out after a few hours. She said she’s glad for that, but the realization of having nowhere to go is setting in. “It’s a crappy feeling, like it’s scary,” she said. “You don’t know what you’re doing next. There’s tons of homeless people out here and we’re definitely one of them again.” And while dozens of people won’t be able to call The Kingsland Hotel home anymore, workers at nearby businesses aren’t too sad it’s closed. One person told News4JAX off-camera she “won’t miss seeing cops there.” News4JAX was given the number of the hotel manager, named Jimmy. People who lived at the hotel described him as someone who helped them when they were down. We asked Jimmy why the water bill wasn’t paid for months. He said they were working to get the money, and when they finally had enough which was by 4 p.m. Tuesday, the city wouldn’t accept it. Jimmy also mentioned there were a lot of people who lived at the hotels who didn’t pay their bills on time or at all, which made things more difficult. Jimmy and the woman who wanted to remain anonymous both said they wished the city would have handled this closing differently. So people like them weren’t scrabbling to find a place to live. Spell said the city is working closely with Camden County emergency management and other charities to provide resources to those affected. We were told no one had taken advantage of those services so far. We also reached out to the owner of the hotel and are waiting to hear back. Copyright 2025 by WJXT News4JAX - All rights reserved. Khalil Maycock joined the News4JAX team in November 2022 after reporting in Des Moines, IA. Click here to take a moment and familiarize yourself with our Community Guidelines TV Listings In January, another pair of speed detection cameras went live, near Camden County High School on Laurel Island Parkway. Those cameras are the latest added to the Kingsland Police Department’s Automated Photo Speed Enforcement Program. Cameras were installed and activated in Kingsland at: Camden Middle School, David L Rainer Elementary School, Matilda Harris Elementary School and Camden High School on Wildcat Drive. Capt. Dan Falcitelli with the police department said they installed the cameras because they were having a problem with speeders in school zones. During the 2023-2024 school year, he said two buses were hit by cars. Two kids were hit near Lakes Boulevard, and a child was hit while riding a bicycle near the high school. The captain said since the installation of the cameras, and people started receiving citations for speeding, those crashes have significantly reduced. He said there’s only been one major incident this school year. It happened this week when a car hit a bus, luckily no one was injured. Ashley Grap, a parent of two students in the area said she feels like the cameras make the area safer. “A lot of people got the wake-up call,” Grap said. She said she appreciates the cameras being installed but doesn’t like how she received a ticket for driving fast in a school zone. And even though another pair of cameras were just added by the high school, she thinks more need to be added near that location. “If they do put another one, put it more towards the rec center only because where they have it now kids are speeding out of the rec center,” Grap said. Falcitelli said the police department does want to add another speed camera on Highway 40. That’s near an elementary school and the location where the bus was hit by the car this week. And although the program is still very young, he said he is “pretty satisfied as to the results so far.” He said they’re going to keep monitoring the results over the rest of the school year to see if it continues to make a difference. News4JAX did reach out to the Camden County School System for comment on the program. “We support the implementation of the speed enforcement cameras...Our commitment to safety remains unwavering as we continue to collaborate with local authorities to ensure the well-being and success of our community.” The 30-day warning period for the new cameras on Laurel Island Parkway began Jan. 7 and goes until Feb. 5. Starting on the 6th the Laurel Island cameras will be active for live tickets and tickets for speed violations will be active. According to the FBI, Alex Hodgson Doughty’s remains were found on Feb. 4 in a wooded area on private land near Kingsland, Georgia. Doughty, who was a citizen of the United Kingdom, was visiting North Florida in September 2022 when his mother contacted local police and reported that she could not reach him and was concerned for his wellbeing, officials said. The FBI said investigators from multiple federal, state, local and international agencies have helped in the search for answers since the day he was reported missing. “While we had hoped to bring Mr. Doughty’s family better news, we are thankful to be able to provide them with some closure,” said Special Agent in Charge Kristin Rehler. “This discovery is the direct result of our partnerships and special agents from FBI Jacksonville’s Cellular Analysis Survey Team (CAST), who were relentless in their efforts to narrow down potential search locations.” According to officials, the FBI’s CAST supports law enforcement investigations through the analysis of historical and real-time mobile communications and geolocation data. CAST experts receive extensive training and are highly proficient at analyzing location data from mobile devices. This case was investigated by the FBI Jacksonville Division and State Attorney’s Office for the Fourth Judicial Circuit, Thames Valley (UK) Police Department, Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, and Kingsland Police Department. Additional local law enforcement provided resources to aid in the search. Marcela joined News4JAX in 2023. KINGSLAND – Some residents in a Kingsland neighborhood expressed their frustrations and concerns Tuesday over the potential closure of a railroad crossing A sign that was posted at the site states that the company St Marys Railroad is asking to close the railroad crossing and a public meeting will be held at Kingsland City Hall to address residents’ concerns “This crossing has been here for the 45 years I’ve been in this town There’s no reason to close it other than somebody trying to avoid paying the upkeep,” Resident Geoff Bonnet said That orange closure sign has stirred up strong emotions among residents “I came home Sunday and I saw these orange signs at the railroad crossing and I didn’t actually pay any attention to them until Monday morning when I learned that the railroad company is actually trying to close the railroad crossing completely,” Resident Josh Kukails said “It affects my daily travel to and from work But my biggest thought is it’s going to affect delivery drivers the bus routes for the children that ride in the mornings.” the closure isn’t just an inconvenience — it’s also a financial and safety concern “I’ve seen this neighborhood a foot deep underwater where you can’t get here other boats by boat unless you came across that railroad track,” Bonnet said “My stepmother lives right here at this intersection she can’t get out of here when that happens.” Marys Railroad and spoke with the general manager briefly over the phone He said they are looking to close this crossing for safety concerns as there are no signals or gate arms When asked why they won’t add those items instead of closing the crossing he said the company doesn’t want to pay for them Concerned residents also created a petition to collect signatures and urge local authorities to reconsider their decision to close the crossing. The public hearing to discuss the closure will be held at Kingsland City Hall on March 10 at 6 p.m. Enjoy all your local news and sports for less than 7¢ per day Home » News » News By Town » Kingsland » New wells going in to study old contamination site in Kingsland and other online content are copyrighted property of Victory Media Reproduction in part or in whole is prohibited without the express written consent of the publisher 400 Services (2) 900 Rentals (1) KINGSLAND WATER TOWER LEAKING - The Kingsland Water Tower pictured above was leaking after being shot in May of 2022 a Minnesota-based singer/songwriter found the news footage and was inspired to write a Johnny Cash-style song KINGSLAND - For everyday people around the town of Kingsland and Cleveland County as a whole the infamous shooting of the water tower in May of 2022 is old news they would like to forget That is not the case however for the rest of the world Minnesota singer-songwriter (and furniture salesperson) Cori Kennedy Kennedy stumbled upon news footage of the water tower shooting which depicted music icon and Kingsland native Johnny Cash "leaking from the sky" after the shot was fired in what then-Mayor Luke Neal called a "sensitive area."  Kennedy wrote a song about it in the style of Johnny Cash.  She posted a video of the song across her social media platforms The video quickly went viral and within a week surpassed 11 million views steadily climbing closer to 20 million at the time of publication Kennedy's video going viral mirrors that of the original shooting footage in 2022 going viral and making world news attracting people to Kingsland The runaway success of the song brought many surprises Kennedy's way She called in to the Free Range Conversations podcast to discuss how the song came about and everything "bonkers" that has happened since Kennedy shares her amazement at the whole ordeal "This is just the silliest thing I've ever seen It sounds like something Johnny Cash would either write about so I wrote about it." The song came to her quickly and she finished it in about an hour "Those are the easiest ones to write when it's all the true story because you have your plot right in front of you."  Similarly to how she found the water tower footage Boultinghouse found Kennedy's video on Instagram the following Tuesday and quickly reached out to the singer to see if she had a moment to talk he was not the only one from Cleveland County who reached out to Kennedy She shared she had received a message from Timothy Sled who was found guilty by a jury in Cleveland County Circuit Court in May of 2023 of two felony charges for shooting a hole in the water tank Kennedy shared she had a video conversation with Sled Sled shared with her that the shot was made with a 308 and a scope bought from Walmart Kennedy said knowing how the shot was made was the burning question from her family Kennedy has also had people reaching out to her from all over the world While she said she is not sure of her plans to sign with a label or remain an independent artist she has gone into the studio to record the song Who Shot The Water Tower?" which will be released on all streaming platforms Thursday She considers the success of this video her "kick in the butt" to get things going and is looking to record other songs she has written Another thing on Kennedy's agenda is making a trip to Kingsland to visit the water tower in person for a new video While she initially hoped to make that trip within the coming weeks her plans are delayed by other obligations keeping her in Minnesota Boultinghouse has been working with the singer to figure out the logistics to have her as one of the acts at this year's Rison in the Fall festival in October "I'm going to try and make that for sure if I can," Kennedy said Boultinghouse said he is currently working on the budget and scheduling with additional acts to complete the festival lineup he had several requests for her to perform at the festival He said ultimately it will depend on Kennedy's schedule and the costs to get her to Rison from Minnesota 'I'm about 12 hours from you if I were to get in my Toyota Corolla and head on down,' she said "We'd love to have her here." Also during the podcast Kennedy shares tales of being a college athlete and how softball tournaments once brought her to Arkansas how her grandparents influenced her love of traditional country music (and her humor) and if she plans to pivot from selling office furniture to making music full-time She also tells another Cashrelated story of how a friend of a friend in Memphis lives in one of the star's former apartments "I guess there's a lot of odd things that happen in that apartment whether you want to call it paranormal or not," she said that's just Johnny.' But they said that she sent her friend the video because she lives in that apartment the lights started flickering like crazy," she said "That is the weirdest thing ever," she said Boultinghouse added that Cash was known for a wicked sense of humor The full episode of the podcast is streaming now on Apple Podcasts Spotify and ClevelandCountyHerald.com below: FBT Bank: Simple Home Loans To Help You Own © 2025 Cleveland County Herald The Preserve at Camden Woods is expected to open this April KINGSLAND, Ga., March 13, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Century Communities, Inc.—a top national homebuilder and featured on America's Most Trustworthy Companies and World's Most Trustworthy Companies by Newsweek—is expanding its footprint in the greater Jacksonville area with the upcoming launch of The Preserve at Camden Woods A celebratory groundbreaking ceremony was held on January 29 As part of the established Camden Woods development this vibrant community offers an exceptional lifestyle opportunity for homebuyers blending quality new home construction with modern design and desirable amenities Buyers will also love an idyllic location near historic downtown St Marys and within convenient commuting distance to Jacksonville For more information and to join the community interest list, visit www.CenturyCommunities.com/CamdenWoods "We are thrilled to continue our expansion in Kingsland GA with The Preserve at Camden Woods," said Joann Frazier Jacksonville Director of Sales & Marketing "This new development reflects our commitment to thoughtfully crafting communities with exceptional new homes and a high quality of life We invite homebuyers to join our interest list to receive the latest updates on availability DISCOVER THE FREEDOM OF ONLINE HOMEBUYING: Century Communities is proud to feature its industry-first online homebuying experience on all available homes Learn more about the Buy Online experience at www.CenturyCommunities.com/online-homebuying and featured among America's Most Trustworthy .. and featured on America's Most Trustworthy.. "You are taking transit away rather than adding accessibility," Gellert said Daniel Chazin of Teaneck cited a 2023 statistic in NJ Transit's audio presentation that Kingsland Station is used by 290 passengers daily he cited a similar NJ Transit proposal to close the Great Notch station on the Montclair-Boonton Branch unless it averaged at least 75 passengers a day during a trial year and asked for similar consideration for Kingsland "There is no basis for the closing of the Kingsland station which appears to be used by more daily riders than the average NJ Transit rail station," Chazin said There were about 22 residents in attendance at the Wednesday morning hearing and about 42 at the Thursday evening one. The NJ Transit presentation of the proposal is posted on its website, njtransit.com NJ Transit is expected to decide on Kingsland Station in November Emailed comments on the proposal were due at midnight Wednesday Home » News » News By Town » Kingsland » Two dead in Kingsland shootings Guitarist Brian Kingsland, better known for his work with Nile, Imperishable, and Enthean, has released a classical/Spanish guitar record.
