AUSTIN — Temoc Zamora knew after his first taste of the UIL State Track Meet that he wanted more
The Veterans Memorial hurdler benefitted from his experience the second time around
Zamora earned a bronze medal in the Class 5A boys 110-meter hurdles in a blazing fast final at Mike A
capping a strong career running for the Eagles
I was thinking I really want to get on podium next year," Zamora said
I am happy with the time and I'm just glad to get a medal."
Zamora was part of a record-setting 5A final in the 110 hurdles
one that was won by Corsicana's Ja'Shaun Lloyd in a national record of 13.20 seconds
area and regional champion clocked 13.97 to earn his spot on the medal stand
it was my first time at state," Zamora said
I think I did that pretty well and executed
Obviously this was my last year and I wanted to make sure I got a medal
mentally preparing and getting ready for the meet."
Zamora was not elevated to varsity until late in his freshman season and said he was proud of what he accomplished for Veterans Memorial
qualifying for state in three events over his final two seasons
The Eagles senior also qualified for the 300 hurdles and finished eighth with a time of 38.62
He credited a challenging schedule for helping prepare him for the competition
"We had a lot of travel meets so I could get exposure to those faster people
so coming in it wasn't as much as a shock," Zamora said
"Seeing that is going to prepare me if I can compete in college
Zamora joined Kingsville's Jasiah Rivera and JB Kazanjian
giving the Coastal Bend three state medalists in hurdle competition at the UIL State Track Meet
Rivera picked up his third and fourth medals
finding the stand in the 110 and 300 hurdles in Class 4A boys competition while Kazanjian
claimed second in the 100 hurdles in her debut at the state meet
Rivera capped his high school career before heading to Texas A&M with two medals despite an injury-plagued senior season
He finished third in the 110s after clocking 13.65 and second in the 300 hurdles with a time of 37.17
"I didn't even think I was going to be able to run today
so it was a blessing I was able to medal two times," Rivera said
"Since the first track meet it has been injuries — take one day on
It really meant I had to focus on mental reps."
where she placed sixth (17 feet 7¼ inches) to go with both hurdle events
ran a 13.49 to claim silver in the 100 hurdles
and I looked at it and I couldn't believe it," Kazanjian said
"I am really grateful for how the season ended
I am really excited to have three more years and I want to see how much I can drop my time."
The Town of Kingsville have formally developed and implemented a temporary patio policy
Council recently approved to implement the policy
the province helped restaurants with temporary patios due to the COVID-19 pandemic
allowing restaurants to serve alcohol on temporary patios with municipal approval
where the Town must consider safety issues
like whether it is near vehicles or blocking fire routes
requiring an agreement to address liability
Kingsville mayor Dennis Rogers says this is just an update to the policy
"So really what this is it's just us putting together a policy to be able to manage the patios
and same as that kind of came about through COVID
During COVID we were just trying to make sure businesses were open
it's really just updating and getting a new policy for the patios within our community."
He says the parking space patio's are much more as those spaces wouldn't be available to drivers
what it does is planters will go in place down where the parking
they'll have a patio out on the sidewalk and into the road."
Rogers says he hasn't heard any busy back from residents
"The fees haven't really changed historically
so it's not like they doubled or tripled in price."
He adds that temporary patios are quite popular in the town
Interested businesses must fill out a temporary patio application to receive approval from the town

Texas — The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has given Kingsville Independent School District an "F" rating for the 2023-2024 school year
Kingsville ISD sued the TEA in 2023 for changing its accountability system
"A lot of the times it's like pulling nails trying to get the district to listen to our parents because we know our kids the best at home,” Elizabeth Ramos
“They don't always act the same at school and we want to be a part of the process of communicating back and forth."
Ramos tells KRIS 6 News she understands many teachers do everything they can for students but recognizes teachers can only do so much with limited resources
Ramos removed her son from the school district
"I would definitely take my child back to Kingsville ISD if they had the proper resources in place
asked other parents on social media about their thoughts on the "F" rating
"I don't feel this rating is a fair reflection of all the kids in the district that are great kids," Linda Garcia commented
"Two of my kids will be withdrawn from KISD for the following school year
I'm honestly over it," Koryn Knittel wrote
but what I will say is that the school has so much to offer," Prisma Morales posted
the rating measures a student's performance in their current grade and if they are ready to move onto the next one
It also shows how the district or school prepares the student for the next step in life after graduating high school
I wouldn't run for the hills or anything,” Ramos said
“I believe that there are wonderful teachers there
They have a lot of teachers that have master's degrees
If we can get those resources in place and get leadership involved
then the school district will become better."
Kingsville ISD is the only school district in Kleberg County to receive an "F" rating

TX — Kingsville Superintendent Cecilia "Cissy" Reynolds-Perez has submitted her intent to retire from the district
The KISD board will discuss her possible retirement at Wednesday's school board meeting
Reynolds-Perez became superintendent at KISD in October of 2020
Texas — Nine students at Texas A&M University-Kingsville are among dozens across the Texas A&M University System who have had their student visas revoked by the U.S
The news has created concern among the international student community on campus
which includes 510 students enrolled for the spring 2025 semester
"I know a lot of students here on visas personally and I know that it is something that they are concerned over and just kind of keeping an eye on because it's a very real threat," said Rhianna Steelhammer
a Texas A&M University-Kingsville student
Steelhammer was surprised to learn that visa revocations were occurring at her campus and voiced concern about the impact on affected students
"It's heartbreaking and it defeats the whole purpose of higher education and coming here to continue and like I said reach for that better future," Steelhammer said
"Because if for whatever reason we're denying access to people that are here trying to pursue that then what's what's even the whole point."
explained the serious consequences these students now face
"The student record is updated to reflect the termination
which immediately affects their legal status in the United States," Gonzalez said
"The affected student may face immediate deportation proceedings
Gonzalez believes this could be just the beginning of a larger trend affecting international students in Texas
"I really think we're going to see a lot more
I'm sure that the Department of State will issue more guidance in the future
but if the student believes that it shouldn't have been canceled
he didn't participate in activities deemed contrary to the U.S
they can challenge this in a court and request the reinstatement of the visas," he said
For students concerned about their visa status
Gonzalez recommends consulting with an immigration attorney
Steelhammer remains hopeful for her international classmates
"I know how smart and talented they all are
and I know all the bright big features that they're going to have," she said
"I just really hope and pray that our government can still keep supporting them like that because I feel like this country is for everybody
Leaders of the Texas A&M University System declined to comment further on the situation
stating only that they will continue to follow the law
a former board member of Kingsville Independent School District (ISD)
has raised concerns about the condition of the playground at Harrell Elementary and the misuse of funds that were intended for its renovation
Ramos explained the severe disrepair of the playground
and unsafe materials like nails and plywood
"children could hurt their feet on the exposed metal."
revealed that $15,000 was once allocated in the Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) account for the playground project
only $2,000 remained in the account after most was spent in the past couple of months
it was discovered that the funds had not been spent on the playground
but instead on items such as food from Wingstop and Whataburger
Doordash orders and even Cash App payments for balloons and decor
and food purchases that only fed two or three people at most," Ramos noted
The issue quickly gained attention from local residents
who reached out to KRIS 6 News to investigate
The situation prompted a heated PTO meeting on Tuesday
where concerned parents and community members demanded answers
It doesn't matter when it was raised — it was earmarked for the playground."
PTO staff confirmed that the account currently holds $7,000
and they promised to investigate the issue further and discuss it in their next meeting
Cecilia "Cissy" Reynolds-Perez issued statements regarding the issue and the future of the playground:
parents and community members are left waiting for clarity on what happened to the missing funds and when they can expect real progress on the playground's much-needed makeover
What if there was a way to keep your neighborhood clean — while also having a great time
Kingsville is making that happen with the return of the "Festival de la Lotería."
Kleberg Avenue will once again transform into a vibrant celebration of culture
This year’s festival promises even bigger prizes and more family-friendly fun
Attendees can also look forward to a car show
and delicious eats from local vendors to keep the energy high throughout the day
Proceeds from the event will go toward the "Keep Kingsville Beautiful" initiative
The Festival de la Lotería takes place this Saturday in historic downtown Kingsville from 10 a.m
The first round of prize games kicks off at 11:30 a.m

Kingsville Independent School District Superintendent Cissy Reynolds-Perez shared her intention to retire in an April 13 letter to staff
Reynolds-Perez was hired by the district in 2020
she was part of the West Oso Independent School District administrative team and led Corpus Christi Independent School District's Ray High School as principal for a decade
Reynolds-Perez explained that she plans to retire this year
citing the recent loss of several family members that has led her to "reflect on how short life is and how I'm spending my own daily life." Reynolds-Perez wrote in the letter that she has informed the KISD Board of Trustees to allow the board "ample time" to search for a new superintendent and prepare for the next school year
Reynolds-Perez explained her intention to stay on through state standardized testing to ensure students
teachers and staff have everything they need to succeed on the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness
During Reynolds-Perez's time with the district, Kingsville ISD shifted to a four-day school week and launched a lawsuit
temporarily halting the release of 2023 Texas Education Agency accountability ratings
The school board approved Reynolds-Perez's retirement during its meeting on April 16

KINGSVILLE — Texas A&M University-Kingsville will welcome to campus a cohort of high school dual enrollment students from rural school districts next fall with plans to support the students through 42 credit hours before high school graduation
Superintendents from five rural school districts belonging to the Rural Schools Innovation Zone signed letters of commitment on April 14 to transport high school freshmen to the university in the fall
Agua Dulce Independent School District and Benavides Independent School District are the newest additions to the Rural Schools Innovation Zone
the schools are expected to launch their own unique career pathways
the participating high schools have provided dual credit opportunities for students
The difference with the new agreement is that the RSIZ school districts have agreed to partner with Texas A&M University-Kingsville specifically
unifying dual credit opportunities across the school districts
"The 42-hour core is critical because we consider those 'basics,'" Texas A&M University-Kingsville President Robert Vela said
"The basics mean that when you get this 42-hour core
it's transferable and degree applicable to any program in the state of Texas."
"This is for students that know they want to get a college degree
"It gets students not to worry about committing to a particular field."
freshmen will begin with an art history course in the fall and a speech course in the spring
as well as a non-credit course focusing on student success in the fall
"Cohort models truly make a difference," Texas A&M University-Kingsville Dual Enrollment Director Miranda Joiner said
Moving through the program together creates a strong sense of community
builds confidence and encourages peer support."
Joiner said that students must attempt the Texas Success Initiative Assessment to take the first courses in the pathway as freshman
The TSI assessment measures college-readiness
As students progress in the 42-hour pathway
they will have to pass the TSI assessment to take core academic courses
Students will not have to pay tuition or fees to participate in the dual credit program
Though Texas A&M University-Kingsville does charge tuition for dual enrollment
the school districts will cover the cost for students
neither the school districts nor the students will have to pay tuition if a student is eligible for the Financial Aid for Swift Transfer program
This state program provides funding for educationally disadvantaged students
which refers to students who meet the federal poverty guidelines to qualify for free or reduced-price lunch
This includes between 77% and 92% of the students at the RSIZ-participating high schools
Texas A&M University-Kingsville is the only school in the Texas A&M University System to pursue the FAST program
"This is a heck of a good opportunity for our kids in rural districts," Brooks County Independent School District Superintendent Scott Rogers said
Brooks County is known for being one of the poorest counties in the state
"But we're not going to let that hold us down because we are partnering
with our Rural School Innovation Zone and Texas A&M-Kingsville to promote our students and give them the opportunities they would not otherwise have," Rogers said
students have an hourlong commute to attend dual enrollment courses in Kingsville
Freer Independent School District Superintendent Conrad Cantu said that over the years
Freer High School has switched between working with Texas A&M University-Kingsville for dual credit and searching for other options
the district is again confident in the university's leadership and commitment
"When A&M-Kingsville says they want to serve their backyard
we're in year one of our returned partnership and already I see a different mindset."
Texas A&M University-Kingsville has focused on growing dual credit enrollments in recent years
Dual credit enrollments fell as low as 282 students in fall 2022
according to Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board data
The Rural Schools Innovation Zone dual credit model is different than how the university works with other school districts
Some school districts send students to attend courses in Kingsville
others take online courses and in some cases the university sends faculty to school districts or trains existing school district staff to teach dual credit courses
Rural Schools Innovation Zone Executive Director Michael Gonzalez said that the partners are planning for 50 to 60 freshmen to participate in the dual credit cohort in the fall
Kingsville ISD Superintendent Cissy Reynolds-Perez intends to retire
many Kingsville neighbors have asked the school district for answers and solutions regarding the misuse of Harrel's Elementary PTO funds
Kingsville ISD posted a press release written by Superintendent Dr
Cecilia Cissy Reynolds Perez addressing what will happen going forward
Once they receive the results of the audits
Superintendent Cissy-Reynolds-Perez said the remaining PTO balance will be removed from the account
"We're going to have an outside auditor as well," she said
after meeting with the PTO officers during several meetings
we've determined that it would be best to dissolve the relationship."
Kingsville Chief of Police John Blair told Neighborhood News Reporter Tyrese Boone there could be repercussions for the staff
"There are civil and criminal liabilities that some could face as a result of it
but it would be best to consult with the district attorney to make sure the appropriate charges if any are liable
some neighbors like Elizabeth Ramos still have concerns
which states that there supposed to provide oversight
and make sure they're doing things the correct way and that has not been done," she said
"They need to make sure funds are spent properly."
the district will try to get grants and help from outside entities
We'll be sure to keep you updated on this developing story
the Texas Education Agency has finally released it's rating from the 2023-2024 school year

Could a Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT) be coming to Kingsville
Kingsville council has asked administration to prepare a report on the tax
Mayor Dennis Rogers says the tax has been discussed regionally for a while now
He says Windsor's tax is mainly on hotels but if it's explored in the county
it would go towards short term rentals and hotels
it just provides some funds for us to be able to continue to fund and to expand our tourism department," he says
"So certain aspect if approved those dollars will go towards TWEPI
like our regional tourism partner as well as a percentage coming back to the municipality."
Rogers says there are several municipalities in Ontario that have the tax
He says town staff would recommend the tax amount
it's just the matter how the program looks and if council supports it," he says
"What this tax does is that those who are visiting the region or visiting the municipality are paying this percentage and those dollars go towards tourism
So it can offset local tax dollar funded tourism department."
Rogers says tax amounts across the province range between four and six per cent

According to longtime neighbors in Kingsville
“There’s definitely a history of crime downtown," Kudos Coffee owner Cyrus Obregon said
from cars being stolen and even fellow businesses being robbed
“Once every year or every couple of years the owner right here across the street has some issues with kids breaking into her shop and stuff like that," he said when speaking about crime downtown
"I know Oliver’s Jewelry down the street had a break-in about a year or so ago."
The Kingsville Police Department got a wind of this and with the help of their license plate readers (LPR's)
they were able to arrest the criminal who stole from them
“Because of (the readers) we were able to pinpoint the individual who was involved and the Kingsville Police Department ended up catching them with the jewelry in their vehicle," Kingsville Police Lieutenant Michael Chavana said
Being able to read 2,000 plates per minute with an accuracy rate of 90%
these LPR's can find out if a vehicle is stolen
“We just had one that was caught on the highway that was wanted for murder in another state," Chavana said
one of our officers was able to pick him up
did the traffic stop and took him into custody."
the department plans to add more vehicles to keep neighbors here safe
When KRIS 6 Neighborhood News reporter Tyrese Boone spoke with neighbors here
they said they are happy about the new equipment
“Knowing there’s cameras other than what business owners might have in their business would help a lot," Obregon said
"It’s a security for business owners mentally
Texas — On this segment of Troubleshooters
a young family hired a contractor in May to build a room addition and bath at their Kingsville home
so the family called the Troubleshooters for help
was to add a bedroom and bath onto her young family's Kingsville home because the family was about to grow by one
They hired a contractor named Robert Loewe
who owns a business called I Know a Guy Construction
"He said he would have it done in 2 weeks," Sadie Salinas said
"And we promised to pay the $4700.00 upfront and then the rest was going to be in payments after the project was done."
The total cost for the job would be nearly $10,000.00
the work is nowhere close to being completed
There are questions about the materials necessary for the job
"So we would give him money and then he would say "I need it for diesel or I need to pay a bill or my electricity's gonna get turned off," she said
There's an exchange where the Salinas' ask Loewe if he's going to keep his promises and show up and do the work
i apologize for not being there today..." Then later "But I swear to you
there was no communication from Loewe until the 13
I have been in the hospital with an eye injury."
Loewe returned the call later on the same day the Troubleshooters visited the Salinas'
His side of this situation is that he kept trying to work with the Salinas' money issues
and that a Salinas family member interfered with Loewe and his workers
So the Troubleshooters asked Salinas what she wanted at this point
"I really want this done somehow or another
even if we have to go through someone else because my kids deserve to have a room," she said
it made me sad because she sees this now and she's like 'Mommy
The Troubleshooters keep following this one and let you know what happens next
