FORT DODGE – Kirkwood softball experienced déjà vu
the Eagles avenged a postseason loss to keep their season alive with a sweep over Iowa Central
Kirkwood stormed to an early lead and held on for an 11-9 victory in Game 1 and erased a six-run deficit for a 15-9 comeback victory to win the NJCAA Region 11-B tournament Sunday at Rogers Sports Complex
The Eagles (48-15) rebounded with three straight elimination game wins
including the final two against the Tritons (47-10)
“We really challenged the young ladies (Saturday) night,” Kirkwood Coach Eric Frese said
“We challenged everybody to earn their Eagle wings and step up a little bit when it came to pitching and defense and offensively
Kirkwood advances to the district best-of-3 series
facing Central (Neb.) Community College Friday and Saturday at Columbus
The winner qualifies for the national tournament May 19-24 at Oxford
The Eagles scored more runs in Sunday’s two games (26) than they did in the five previous meetings (22) this season
“It’s great,” said freshman Mischa Reiners
which is the main thing we’ve been wanting to do.”
breaking open a tight game with a seven-run third inning for a 9-3 lead
The Eagles chipped away with four in the fourth and obtained the lead for good with three in the fifth
“It was really unique,” Frese said
has kind of struggled all year when they’re behind
Our freshmen really stepped up and it just didn’t faze them
“It started with a couple base runners
There was just a different feel in that dugout
… The mindset of our hitters was completely different today (Sunday).”
Kirkwood capitalized on control problems for two walks to open the fifth and scored a run on an error
Breanna Ross tied the game with an RBI single and Reiners made it 10-9 with a line-drive single to plate Rachael Schlotter
“It was just nice for us to remember we are scoring runs,” Reiners said
They weren’t throwing a ton of strikes either
We were just picking out our pitch and letting it happen.”
Kirkwood received a two-run home run from Jenna Thurm in the sixth to pad the lead
Kinsley Theobald smacked a two-run triple in the seventh
scoring Reiners and Kiya Johnson for more insurance
Theobald and Peyton Johnson had two apiece for Kirkwood
She said they tried to force things in Saturday’s meeting but remained patient Sunday
“We just let it happen,” Reiners said
made a big offensive contribution this weekend
She had six total hits Sunday and finished with 10 hits and five RBIs during the regional
“We put in a lot of work and it helped me out this weekend,” Reiners said
“Just stayed calm and made her throw me a strike that I can hit
pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings to close the game and earn the victory
Kirkwood built a 9-0 lead through three innings of Game 1 and held on to force the “if” game
Sophia Kreutner belted a grand slam in the top of the first for the Eagles
Kiya Johnson and Reiners drove in two runs apiece
while Peyton Johnson and Thurm each had two hits
beating North Platte (Neb.) Community College

Dining
long before cooking professionally was even a passing consideration
Amy Pappas Loli would regularly receive the ultimate compliment from her then-toddler son: “Mom
you’re the best ‘cooker.’ You need to open a restaurant.”
Today, roughly two decades later, Pappas Loli is on the cusp of doing just that with Café Amalia (10907 Manchester). Slated to open this spring in Kirkwood, the Greek and Mediterranean restaurant is inspired by her family traditions and culture. It’s not the way she envisioned her professional life going, but the dental-hygienist-turned-chef can’t imagine having it any other way.

“I am so happy about this,” says Pappas Loli. “I know it is right, and I am super excited to showcase this food and introduce spirited Mediterranean hospitality to the community.”

DeMoss allowed 2 hits in complete game; Kiya Johnson’s home run helped Eagles pull away
FORT DODGE – Kirkwood Coach Eric Frese has watched freshman pitcher Jessa DeMoss progress this season
After a strong performance a week ago against Northeast Community College
he was confident in putting her back in the circle to open the Eagles’ postseason
DeMoss tossed a complete game and limited Northeast to just two hit in a 5-1 victory in the first round of the National Junior College Athletic Association Region XI-B softball tournament Friday at Iowa Central
“Jessa did a really good job,” Frese said
DeMoss improved to 5-1 overall and also has a save to her credit
shrinking her 4.17 earned-run average before the start
The former Benton Community all-stater was effective
Her ability to throw strikes and surrender just one walk demonstrates the strides she has made in her initial season in the program
“She struggled part of the year with the strike zone at times,” Frese said
“The last three or four times she’s been out there she’s done a tremendous job of throwing strikes
Her best pitch today was her outside fastball and it was called for a strike
Her changeup got better as the game went on.”
Runs were a little tougher to come by against Northeast compared to the 30 runs scored in last week’s doubleheader
She belted a three-run home run in the bottom of the third
“That ball was it a long way,” Frese said
“That made everybody breathe a little bit because it’s the postseason
It doesn’t matter who you’re playing
It’s little bit of a different pressure and she did a great job.”
Peyton Johnson also had an RBI double to score Rachael Schlotter
Mischa Reiners went 2-for-2 with a walk and scored on a passed ball for the first run in the second inning
“The four-run inning really broke things open,” Frese said
“It gave Jessa some breathing room and our defense was tremendous today.”
The winner advances to the championship and will have to be defeated twice for the title on Sunday
All four of their previous games were close
“They’re going to be a great test for us,” Frese said
“We’re going to throw strikes and play defense
we’re going to have to hit the ball well because they’re going to score some runs
We’re going to have one of our better offensive outputs that we’ve had in a while.”
Kyle Kirkwood used a superhuman drive Sunday on the streets of Long Beach to prove that Alex Palou is human
Kirkwood mastered an intriguing contest of tire strategy and speed to win the 50th Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach under sunny Southern California skies

Florida native Kirkwood earned his second Long Beach win from the pole in the last three years

fast consistency helped him keep the championship lead
“You never feel amazing when you finish second
they were amazing all weekend,” Palou said
but hopefully next year we can just improve one step.”
The race quickly became a contest of dueling strategies between the Firestone Firehawk primary and alternate tires
INDYCAR rules require teams to use both tire compounds for at least two laps per race
and many drivers who started on the grippier but less durable alternate tires shed them within the first 10 laps for the more durable primary compound
Kirkwood and Palou were on the dominant strategy of the race
as Palou pitted after Lap 6 and Kirkwood Lap 7 to get on the black-sidewall tires
It became clear through the next fuel and tire cycles that Kirkwood and Palou were the two fastest drivers on track
as the strategists from each team kept close tabs on each other
ensuring no missed chances to pounce due to changing tactics
The true flashpoint of the race came on Lap 66
Palou made his final pit stop at the end of Lap 64
taking a final set of Firestone Firehawk primary tires
Kirkwood did the same at the end of Lap 65
and Palou was right on his gearbox on hotter
grippier tires when Kirkwood exited the pits at the start of Lap 66
But Kirkwood stared down intense pressure on his out lap from Palou
who never got close enough to make a move for the lead
Kirkwood then took the lead for good on Lap 69 when Kyffin Simpson
one of only six drivers to start the race on primary tires
8 Journie Rewards Chip Ganassi Racing Honda as he was off-sequence on pit strategy from the drivers who started on the alternate tire
That was the last of nine lead changes today
the most for the INDYCAR SERIES at Long Beach since 2012
Lundgaard led 26 laps – second to only Kirkwood – despite starting 12th and using the less-popular strategy of starting on primary tires
His strong result came after Arrow McLaren mechanics worked overtime to rebuild his car after Lundgaard crashed Saturday in qualifying

Kyle Kirkwood is making a strong impression in the early stages of the 2025 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season
but he admits to feeling the heat from Alex Palou’s dominance
The Andretti Global driver is sixth in the point standings
Felix Rosenqvist and Alexander Rossi in producing top-10 finishes in both races this season
But the frustration of having to chase down a three-time champion
in Palou can be tough on a driver’s mindset
Palou has won both races so far this season
Kirkwood’s fifth- and eighth-place finishes this season are certainly respectable
“I should be a lot more satisfied than I am,” Kirkwood said
“Because if you look back at (the season-opening Firestone Grand Prix of St
I pretty much followed Alex Palou the entire race and watched him win
we were on pace for what seemed like a locked top-four result
which would have been two top-five (finishes) in a row
To really challenge Palou for the Astor Cup
Kirkwood will need to convert those solid finishes into wins
Given his background – winning championships in USF2000 (2018)
USF Pro 2000 (2019) and INDY NXT by Firestone (2021) -- it’s evident Kirkwood knows how to win and has the experience to handle the pressure of a title fight
He just needs to find a way to outpace Palou on these race days
That pursuit begins this weekend with the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach
“We’ve got to do the same thing that they're doing -- we got to win races,” Kirkwood said of Palou
“We can't let them get a big head start
That is one thing that Palou has done in the past couple years: He gets a huge head start
then everybody claws back at him at the end of the season
He's kind of on cruise control at that point
We need to not let him get out front and hold him back a little bit
“It's turning into a thing that when you beat Alex Palou
1 guy that everyone is looking at now.”
This weekend’s 50th anniversary race could be a perfect place for Kirkwood to strike
He earned his maiden NTT INDYCAR SERIES victory and NTT P1 Award in this event
Add in the fact that Andretti Global has been strong at Long Beach with four of the last six race winners coming from the team
“This is a very crucial weekend for us to turn things around in the championship hunt,” Kirkwood said
“Even though it's still early in the season
it's only two races in of the 17-race season
you’ve got to kind of pay attention to that
“I think this weekend is one of our best opportunities (to gain on Palou)
Long Beach has been one of the best tracks for Andretti Global
I think Toronto and Detroit are starting to grow on that
Long Beach has been a top one for the team
“We're obviously going to be looking for a win
at this time we need wins to be able to win a championship here because Alex Palou is just walking away with (the championships) at the moment
Kirkwood is also aware that he is creating pressure for himself
When a driver has a car that’s capable of winning
the expectations naturally shift and bring a whole new level of pressure to deliver
It’s one thing to be aiming for a top-10 finish and dealing with the challenges that come with trying to extract everything from a less-than-optimal car
but when you know your car has the speed and the potential to win
“I would say the weekends that you feel like you have a really good shot are the easiest,” he said
“I guess you wouldn't think that coming into it
but now that I've had a couple years in the series
the hardest weekends are the ones that you're struggling
It's the ones that you're struggling to get into a top-10 finish
When you have kind of pace under your belt in a race weekend or across practices and qualifying
Another interesting dynamic is Long Beach is a shared weekend with IMSA leading to a compressed schedule
Kirkwood sees that as an advantage for his No
“That doesn't give you a lot of time to really focus on changes
“Coming off the trailer very quick is very important
you have the pressure that now you have a fast car

died while snowboarding at Kirkwood on Saturday
to an intermediate trail at the 2,300-acre Tahoe-area ski resort
Lacayo was pronounced dead at the resort's medical clinic
It is the second reported death at a Tahoe-area resort last weekend. On Saturday, Adelyn Grimes, 7, of Reno died at Diamond Peak Ski Resort. The little girl's death was ruled an accident caused by a falling boulder injuring her neck and chest
according to the Washoe County Medical Examiner's Office
“On behalf of the full team here at Kirkwood
we extend our deepest sympathy and support to the guest’s family and friends
Our thoughts are with all those affected during this difficult time,” Ricky Newberry
said in a statement sent to the Reno Gazette Journal
According to a GoFundMe set up to help Lacayo's family, he was a son

isn't allowed to call Marcus "dad." She can't gripe to him about bad calls or get emotional when she makes a mistake
has always walked a fine line between being too soft or too hard on her
the easiest solution has been keeping their personal and softball lives as separate as possible
being able to see the coaching side of him as well as the dad side ..
I've been able to get a lot closer to him," Maddie said
Maddie and Marcus Ratcliff, an assistant coach at Kirkwood, are making the most of their final season of TSSAA softball together
Maddie was 10-1 with a 1.72 ERA and 71 strikeouts in 57 innings pitched and had a .500 batting average with 27 RBIs

The opening of Kirkwood that fall was an inflection point for both
was hired as the Cobras' first coach that spring
And Kirkwood's enrollment zone drew from Rossview's and the Ratcliffs' home fell inside it
giving Maddie the option to transfer and play immediately
When Maddie and Marcus discussed changing schools
they found themselves drawn to the idea of building something from the ground-up
Maddie also wanted to play for Storz again — she loved the culture Storz and Marcus had built at Rossview
and figured that even starting from scratch
the environment at Kirkwood would be similar
"It was hard in the fact that we had such a successful team (at Rossview)," Marcus said
Be a part of something brand-new and perhaps leave a piece of a legacy."
The Cobras have a bit more experience in 2025 and are reaping the benefits
Sophia Lucas and Northeast transfer Moana Tuuaga are all batting above .300
and freshman Kiara Conley is batting over .600 and has hit safely in every game
They've already beaten everyone else in D13-4A and their only losses have come by one run
"(Maddie) has so much composure and experience in reading hitters and working the count," Storz said
"Just her overall expertise of being in that circle since she was little

Maddie knows she's making the right move for her professional career
but she's still dealing with the abrupt shift in knowing her competitive softball days will end in about a month
but nothing about her approach is terribly different
She's still focused on the same things she was at the start of the year: fighting for championships
while being the best example for the Cobras' younger players that she can be
"I'm really excited for the rest of the season and I really don't want it to end," Maddie said
"I'm just cherishing all the memories with teammates and trying to leave my mark in the best way I can."

The competition is named for Marion Rice Kirkwood

Artal and Rassieur won awards for Best Brief and Best Team Overall
while Artal earned the prize for Best Oral Argument
The annual competition begins with 20 teams of two students
half assigned to argue on behalf of petitioner and half for respondent
Successive elimination rounds winnow the group down to the final two teams
This year’s judges were Justice Goodwin Liu of the Supreme Court of California
Butamay of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
Pryor of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit
The students were asked to brief and argue U.S

A geofence is a virtual “perimeter” or “fence” around a given geographic feature
The main issue in the case was whether the government’s use of a geofence inquiry was an unconstitutional search under the Fourth Amendment

“I got the great advice to treat oral argument as a conversation between me and the judges
so I wasn’t as worried about defending my position as much as just listening to the judges and making sure I understood where they were coming from.”
Artal describes a similar dynamic: “At the end of the day
it’s just a conversation with really smart
“The judges were grappling with questions that had challenged us for months
so I didn’t want to claim to them that the answers were obvious
I wanted to acknowledge our argument’s weak points and give my pitch for why they shouldn’t carry the day.” Artal will join law firm Williams & Connolly for a year
He adds that his Best Oral Argument award “belongs as well to Leo
and to all the faculty and friends who mooted us and helped us refine our responses.”
Finalist Harrison Hurt also calls out the support he and his teammate
received from faculty and friends: “I found the oral argument portion of the competition most challenging
because we don’t get many other opportunities to practice oratorical skills in law school,” he says
we had a lot of help from people like the Moot Court instructors
We also benefited tremendously from practicing with our fellow competitors and even friends outside of the competition.”
Hurt and Blatt plan to serve on the Moot Court Student Board
“We’re excited to pay forward all the support we received this year and pass on what we’ve learned to next year’s competitors,” Blatt says
Students who received awards in the preliminary rounds were: Tommy Archibald and Spencer Segal
for Best Petitioner’s Brief; and Sophia Caldera and Jacqueline Lewittes
