Another big clean-up is underway in Klahanie after a car crashed right into a storefront in a shopping center along Klahanie Drive Southeast
The crash Sunday morning happened approximately six months after another store was hit just a few doors down
The owner of The UPS Store told KOMO News he learned about the crash Sunday morning from a customer who came to pick up their mail
The impact from the crash left behind mangled window frames and glass shattered all over the ground
The store was closed for the day when the crash happened
Shoppers were left stunned that the same row of businesses was hit again
"I think it’s probably more common than people think it is for cars to go through the front of buildings
‘Cause a place where I teach yoga – it happened also
And a person had an acceleration problem," said shopper Amy Charles
an employee at the nearby Pet Pros was on a step ladder when another crash sent shards of glass toward her from every direction
"It could have potentially been worse but it wasn't so we are thankful for that," Pet Pros Regional Operations Manager Mikie Pierre told KOMO News in March
"It was substantial enough to push our whole cash wrap back and the car to be completely in our store."
Employees say the Klahanie Center Veterinary Clinic several doors down was once hit
‘Cause it’s pretty scary," Charles said
The crash lead to some rattled nerves and a big repair job
"That’s some pretty serious damage," Charles told KOMO News
The store's owner does have insurance
He might have customers come through a back door until the storefront is a repaired

When asked about why Unique Saguindan wanted to bring a dim sum eatery to Squamish
her answer was simple: She longed for a taste of home in Hong Kong
“I actually just have this idea to fulfill the food gaps in Squamish
to bring something in that's more of my own culture so that I can have it and everyone else can have it,” she said
“Because I'm sure I'm not the only one that's craving these things.”
the two recently opened Unique Slow Rise Bakery at Klahanie Campground off the Sea to Sky Highway
The eatery boasts walk-up ordering and many picnic tables for outdoor seating that is also dog-friendly.
Unique said the bakery is styled similarly to yum cha in Hong Kong
and people might help grab items for others
Unique wanted to highlight all of her favourites from around Hong Kong.
and pork dumplings—which come in four or eight-piece servings—plus a variety of bao
Unique was uncertain about how well the new venture would be received
she said there were folks already lined up at 7 a.m
saying the customers were extra supportive as the staff were getting their footing
“That was really moving.”
“I don't think I've ever bawled my eyes out like this in the kitchen,” she said with a laugh
“It was a little intimidating,” Gabriel recounted
“It was very exciting to see a lot of people coming to support.”
Unique said those very first customers even signed an encouraging note for the team on a used take-out bag
which she plans to frame and hang at the bakery
a few items from Unique Slow Rise Bakery can also be purchased for those on the go at Stong’s Market in downtown Squamish
the two said they are already dreaming about ways to add more dishes to the menu and to continue service through the winter months
They are also planning an official grand opening event in the coming weeks
Unique said they are focused on adding elements that will make visitors feel like they’ve been transported to Hong Kong for yum cha and are sharing food while bonding with their families
“Through that sharing food with people that I have in common with or with our community resembles Sunday family gathering time,” she said
“You kind of show love through this way.”

It’s obvious to former Issaquah City Councilman David Kappler which city should annex Klahanie
an affluent unincorporated King County community of more than 10,000
“Just looking at a map tells you a lot
There’s nothing we could do more efficiently than Sammamish,” said Kappler
who voted against annexing Klahanie to Issaquah in 2005
11 special election that could be approved by the Metropolitan King County Council on Monday would allow Klahanie residents to vote for annexation to Issaquah
Opponents of an Issaquah annexation are urging residents to vote no so Sammamish has a shot at acquiring the area
Klahanie residents have a lot to gain if they’re incorporated into a city: lower taxes
more local law enforcement and the ability to hold office in a local government
A Klahanie home assessed at $320,000 would pay about $380 less in taxes and fees every year after an annexation to Issaquah
according to a study the city commissioned
Sammamish and Issaquah would also have a lot to gain if either annexed the community
The city of Issaquah’s study showed the city would take in $6.48 million a year from Klahanie residents while paying about $5.84 million a year to service the area
A population increase could help the cities qualify for more federal grant money
The city that annexes the land could also qualify for a 0.1 state sales-tax credit for 10 years
Because Sammamish wasn’t incorporated when the county’s comprehensive growth-management plan was established
it has never been officially considered a city that has a right to annex
Sammamish city officials hoped the Boundary Review Board for King County would change that earlier this year so that a special election could give Klahanie residents the opportunity to join their city
But the board decided not to because Issaquah already had a right to acquire the area and its efforts were already under way
If the annexation to Issaquah is turned down in the February special election
the Growth Management Plan Council could consider remapping potential areas for annexation in the county’s growth plan so that Sammamish could acquire the area
unless the Issaquah City Council decides to relinquish annexation rights
the growth-management council’s senior policy analyst
a 24-year Klahanie resident who has led the effort to be annexed to Issaquah
“Sammamish had more than a decade to change the annexation area to take us
or brought up until the last moment,” Young
“I’ve been working on this for three years
and it’s happening because of hard work
a lot of contacts and a lot of meetings so that we can finish this and move on to something else.”
who is also a former president of the Sammamish Chamber of Commerce
said that although she suspects overall taxes and fees would be lower if Klahanie were annexed to Issaquah
Sammamish’s lack of city debt could allow for quicker road repairs and emergency-services coverage
An Eastside Fire & Rescue station located inside Sammamish city limits has been servicing Klahanie for years but could be swallowed up soon in an independent fire department Sammamish is interested in creating
That could force Issaquah to buy that station or help fund another one in the area
Although Young has accused Sammamish of trying to use the fire station as a bargaining chip
Sammamish city officials say their desire to start their own fire department preceded annexation attempts
it would continue to be serviced by the King County Sheriff’s Office
The Issaquah Police Department would work in Klahanie if the area were annexed to Issaquah
O’Malley says a potential annexation to Sammamish needs to be further researched before other Klahanie residents permanently commit to being part of another city
“Annexing is like a marriage without an option for divorce,” O’Malley said

No fish or people were harmed in the April 22 fire
– People living in the Klahanie neighborhood are taking a stand against racist graffiti splattered across several homes
Police are also working to gather home surveillance footage from residents to see if there are any images of who spray-painted one house after another
The people who live in the area around 252nd Ave SE said the images they found spray-painted outside their doorsteps on Wednesday morning hit them like a slap in the face
initially anger because I know our community is better than that,” said Christina Riley
The obscenities scrawled around the neighborhood prompted Amy Myhre and her daughter to go around with their own response
“We dropped off some flowers and cards at some of the houses that were affected and then also decided to put up some flyers to share a message of positivity,” Myhre said
Those posters also cover the graffiti that hasn't already been painted over
a collection was started to help with cleanup
“All of my efforts today has just been to pull together as a community and show our neighbors this is a place of welcoming and love and caring,” Riley said
City leaders condemned the graffiti and praised the neighbors for their commitment to diversity
“It's nice to hear that our residents are really out and about and trying to bridge build with their neighbors and let them know they are there and they are supportive,” said Sammamish Mayor Christie Malchow
“I think that's really important because in all likelihood it will deter future behavior."
The mayor also said what happened in the Klahanie neighborhood is not a reflection of the city's values because they want everyone to feel welcome
Police said this remains an open investigation
They have yet to determine if this vandalism was just a bad prank or something akin to a hate crime
The large property on which Klahanie Campground sits is for sale by court order.
The 15-hectare (37-acre) property includes almost 0.5 kilometres of waterfront and "extensive highway frontage."
It is being sold by Re/Max's Claire Group and Colliers' Unique Properties as part of a foreclosure
"The property provides one of the single best tourist development opportunities within the Sea to Sky Corridor and B.C
Manjit Claire
said he couldn't say yet exactly what the property would be sold at but it would likely be "in the $20-million-plus range."
it is not within the reach of the average buyer
but for somebody who has the pockets to make it
it would be like a trophy property," he said
"It would be the gateway going into Squamish and Whistler
There's an opportunity to create something really unique."
The 2024 BC Assessment valued the property at about $11.7 million
Claire said with a court-ordered sale like this "you're always buying a property as is
This means that the onus to do all the due diligence is on the buyer
But much of the purchase process is the same for any real estate buy.
"The initial offer is the same back and forth
as you would negotiate any offer," Claire said
and if there are any subjects on the offer
it's the same thing as a regular offer
only then does a court date get set."
anybody else who wants to bid on the property can present a competing bid
generally up to four days before the court date is set
The other bids would get forwarded to the lenders' lawyer and then the lawyer would present all the offers to the court
"The court decides which offer to accept
The competing bid cannot have any subject conditions," Claire said
He noted that while the property does have its challenges for the buyer
in that plans would have to work through the municipal process
The listing says that the property "is prime for redevelopment to a variety of uses consistent with its tourist commercial zoning."
Currently home to the popular Klahanie Campground
the listing says the RV and tenting campground has over 100 sites.
"The property will provide valuable holding income pending redevelopment," reads the listing
The campground’s Rick Poissant told The Squamish Chief via email that he was not too concerned about the latest development with the property
and this issue will also disappear soon,” he said
adding his understanding is there is some corporate restructuring underway
(The listing asks that people not visit the site directly; call the agent to arrange a visit.)
this property has had a few different plans that didn't pan out.
Most recently, plans for a $400 million Klahanie resort—including a five-star destination resort
and spa—gained momentum in 2017 but have since stalled.

Sammamish: The best place to live in Washington. Or at least that’s the latest hype about the city. Similar rankings often pop into my email boasting of the city’s affordability, or even how much cheaper it is to buy a car there
“Really?!” John Curley exclaimed when I told him this
But it’s a plateau and it’s a pain in the butt to get off of
and it’s a pain in the butt to get back onto.”
Curley lives there and is a former council member. Gee Scott has lived there for more than two years
“I do think that Sammamish is the best place to raise your kids … you don’t need a car to get around in the Sammamish area,” Gee said
In the summer time is pretty cool for the kids
This is not meant to be a dig at the city or the people who live there
and I could go on with other very negative criticisms
But it’s not like it’s different from most any other suburb
On the other hand, it’s understandable why some people are drawn to the area — family. Nearly half of all households in the city have children and 77 percent of households have married couples
What isn’t as understandable is the claim that it’s the best place to live in Washington state. It’s frequently rated as the best place to live by Money Magazine
I asked these two KIRO Radio hosts and Sammamish residents to weigh in
feel free to weigh in with your own opinion below
“My kids go to Eastside Catholic,” Gee said
“It was a family decision and I wanted them to live very close to where they went to school …
When you are getting ready for the ACT and the SAT
that school system gets you prepared – very good test scores.”
the biggest problem we would get was ‘there’s a dead raccoon on the side of the road.’ And we were quick to respond.”
“I’ll tell you something that stands out about Sammamish,” Gee said
“I love the fact that if you call the police
the police will be there at your house in 30 seconds
I had a situation where I had a knock at my door at 4:30 in the morning
‘We caught somebody going through your car.’ Well
the neighbor saw them going through my car in the middle of the night
The police were on the scene before the person who was going through my car was done
That’s how fast the police response time is in Sammamish
they don’t have anything that stands out,” Gee said
“Are we talking about the QFC or the Safeway
overpriced almond milk … and we don’t call them strip malls
they are ‘open air shopping village experiences’ with really
“We have hardly any good restaurants,” Curley said
“I think we give Federal Way a run for its money when it comes to fast food
If you’ve done the Jack in the Box and the McDonald’s
They’re all within a stone’s throw of each other.”
the food there needs more seasoning.”
I would not move there thinking about affordability
And the beauty of it is you can know exactly what your neighbor is cooking for dinner; you can smell it because they are 15 feet away
You have a $1 million house and you can look across and see the guy’s Levi waist band size
Note: According to the latest census data (2017)
There’s more night life in Redmond than there is in Sammamish
you go to a soccer field and drink $9 lattes from Starbucks
and you watch your 7-year-old kick another 7-year-old in the shins while you read Facebook,” Curley said
“That’s when they are young … I don’t know what people do there otherwise
then I go to the gym … there’s the Pine Lake Ale House where you can get a fried chicken sandwich
Pine Lake Ale House is the restaurant people go to.”
Sammamish is a great place to go,” Gee said
“If it’s just you and your significant other
but realize your children are going to be surrounded by very
very wealthy children and you really have to make sure that you have a solid foundation so your child is not swept up in the materialism that is all around them,” Curley said
“I’m talking about kids getting brand new cars for their birthday and going to school
or racing around on boats on Lake Sammamish
They are going to be surrounded by money and hopefully they got some strong values.”
— The latest rash of vandalism happened in the Willows subdivision
which is right next to the Klahanie Park subdivision that was hit earlier this week
“This is very unusual for this neighborhood,” said Joji Montenegro
Vandals targeted several homes in a quiet Sammamish neighborhood with words of hate; a garage spray painted with a racial slur
“It’s a little uncomfortable to be seeing all this
We’ve never seen it,” said Raghuraj Ravindranathan
He says his garage was tagged with words he didn’t understand
But he’s finding some comfort from the community
“We got a lot of support from our neighbors and across the community,” said Ravindranathan
Elisa Parry’s home was targeted too; along with her husband’s car
The Sammamish police chief says several detectives are investigating and as many as 17 incidents have been documented now from the past week
“We have many things that have been tagged — box trucks
cars — all with the same red spray paint,” said Sammamish Police Chief Michelle Bennett
they are not treating these cases as a hate crime
“None of the graffiti has exactly matched up to that person’s ethnicity or their culture,” said Chief Michelle Bennett
They say they want to gather all the evidence first and determine who the suspected vandals are before making that decision
Police don’t have a description yet of the suspected vandal
Dex Montenegro— whose car was vandalized with a red swastika— found comfort from the kindness of a stranger today
The owner of an auto body shop and his crew in Kent offered to clean up Montenegro’s car for free
“He just wanted me to know there are still good people out there in the world and when he said that to me — that made my day,” said Montenegro
I’m not going to waste my time with something that somebody did that’s wrong.”
And there's a special community peace rally Sunday starting at 4:30 p.m
There might be more incidents of vandalism out there
If you've been affected or have information
you're asked to call Sammamish Police
The $400-million Klahanie resort is moving ahead in 2017
according to its backer – but an investor in a previous version of the project still has unanswered questions.
located across from Shannon Falls Provincial Park at the south end of Squamish
was introduced about a decade ago and one of the men behind the first incarnation has made another
But that plan for the upscale resort is being called into question by an investor in the previous version.
says he invested about $200,000 in the original resort back in 2009.
The plan presented at the time was for 29 different buildings
including 165 hotel units along with 184 quarter-share condominium units
according to articles in The Chief at the time
It was then called the Shannon Falls Resort and Spa or Shannon Shores Resort and Spa
Documents supplied to The Chief describe profit projections of up to 174 per cent in a limited partnership.
The expected date of return on the investment capital was late 2011 with the profits on the investment expected to come in late 2014.
Though Spashett says he was not kept up to date about what was happening with the development for years
told The Chief the original investors will get their money back with the new development.
Karim told The Squamish Chief by phone recently that the original project was not viable at the time due to market conditions
but that when the new incarnation of the project goes forward those original investors will get their money back.
“The project got into difficulties when the market crashed in 2008,” he told The Chief.
Karim said that even though he was involved originally
he did not have full control of the companies in charge of the project
Klahanie Developments and Shannon Springs limited partnership.
In a BC Supreme Court affidavit by Karim from April 2011
Karim describes himself as “director and officer of Klahanie Developments.”
Karim said he now controls about 94 per cent of the project with his company Symphony Resource while the remaining percentage is held by the original investors.
I would be happy to buy anybody out,” he said.
Karim said there were “probably” about 27 original investors.
in the sense of when the project takes off
They can either “get paid or stay,” Karim said
adding “if they are patient to wait it out.”
But Spashett hasn’t heard anything back about the development for two years
despite trying to make contact with the company.
adding he tried to contact the current project’s design firm Ekistics
He had not known how to contact Karim directly
The story takes an added twist in that the U.K
financial management company Bentley-Leek Financial Management
which presented the proposal in 2009 to investors
was liquidated and two of its agents disciplined.
The United Kingdom Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) shut down Bentley-Leek Financial Management in 2013 for unscrupulous practices
including conflict of interest and advising clients to invest in projects known to be not viable. There is no suggestion the FCA considered the Klahanie project to have been one with questionable viability
Two financial advisers with Bentley-Leek were fined by FCA a total $1.4 million and banned by the Financial Conduct Authority from holding any position at any financial firm
were both directors of Bentley Leek Financial Management
Dervish came to Spashett’s home to pitch the Shannon Falls proposal
“They were the agent,” Karim said of Bentley-Leek
“I don’t even know where they are or what happened.”
Spashett fears his investment is lost.
“It is very disappointing for me having invested
half of my [pension] investment fund,” Spashett said by phone from his U.K
He was shocked to see that West Vancouver landowner Karim was again floating a massive resort project this year
“I would settle for my money back,” said Spashett
“I have worked in the mooring business for 37 years
Worked when I should have been in bed.”
The new project is on time and moving forward
We have a super plan,” he told The Chief.
Karim said he is funding a feasibility study to see if the hydro lines that bisect the project can be moved.
“I wouldn’t be putting so much money out if I had doubts,” he said
the design firm behind the current resort plans
the new incarnation of the upscale all-season resort is a go.
“The project is moving ahead after a summer on pause following the owner’s focus on family health issues,” Fenske told The Squamish Chief in an email
“We are moving forward with a study with BC Hydro to confirm the ability to move the transmission lines from their current location on the site
we will be undertaking a development permit for submission to the District [of Squamish] by summer or fall 2017.”
The new project is going to be funded with “some bank financing
some presales and a lot of the cash that I will be making – now that I control 93 per cent
I will be injecting my own equity,” Karim told The Chief
“I am very confident of where it is going.”
Karim said that those original investors who are concerned can contact him directly.

The body of a former Sammamish middle school girl was found Sunday on a Klahanie-area trail after authorities received reports that she sent suicidal text messages and talked about it on Facebook
the King County Sheriff’s Office reported Monday
Sheriff investigators believe the 12-year-old’s death was not criminal
The King County Medical Examiner on Monday identified the girl as Ariana Larsen-Skube of Issaquah
That office said her death was a suicide by hanging
She was a seventh-grade student at Pacific Cascade Middle School in Issaquah
school administrators at that campus said in an e-mail
A friend of the girl contacted deputies Wednesday to inform them of the text messages and Facebook posting
Deputies later searched Pine Lake Park in Sammamish and tried contacting the girl's parents
The girl's parents informed deputies that they did not believe she was suicidal
Because of her age and initial report from the friend
Her parents filed a missing person report on Thursday
the girl’s parents called authorities to report her as missing
Although they described her as a “chronic” runaway
deputies tried to find the girl through a cell phone she had been using
The signal from that phone gave different general locations at different times
Searchers also went door to door to ask people if they had seen her
an off-duty detective was walking on a Klahanie-area trail and saw some “emotionally upset” people
They had looked in a wooded area and found the girl’s body
The people were in an area near Southeast 42nd Street and 243rd Avenue Southeast
The area is on the east side of Yellow Lake.
administrators had counseling services available to help students deal with the news
“We are ready to support students however necessary
We want parents to be aware so that you can check in with your children at home,” Principal Roy Adler wrote in an e-mail parents
“If you notice any signs of grief – such as sadness
or appetite changes – please do not hesitate to contact our counseling office for assistance.”
told parents and students that it was important to “come together” as a school community for support

who played high school rugby on the North Shore themselves
“[It’s a] great way to show the current high school players what club rugby can be for them after high school,” Robinson said
“Also provide them a bit more of a crowd and atmosphere than they are used to.”

A pedestrian suffered serious, but non-life-threatening injuries when the man in his 30s was struck by a train while walking along the railway tracks at Klahanie Drive and Murray Street Saturday morning, April 20.
Const. Sam Zacharias, spokesperson for the Port Moody Police Department (PMPD), said the incident occurred at about 10 a.m.
He said it’s believed to have been an accident and railway police from Canadian Pacific Kansas City Ltd. (CPKC), which operates the spur line that runs to Ioco, have taken over the investigation.
Residents in the Klahanie neighbourhood adjacent to the tracks have been advocating for trains to stop blowing their whistles when approaching the crossing at Murray Street.
In 2021, they presented a petition with about 100 signatures to Port Moody council complaining the noise from passing trains is “so incredible, you can’t even hear what is going on in your apartment.”
The residents called for the installation of gates at the crossing so trains wouldn’t have to blow their whistles to warn pedestrians and motorists of their approach.
But a report by the city’s engineering department said with only about two trains a day using the tracks that connect the main CP line to the old Imperial Oil refinery, the crossing at Murray Street, as well as nine other locations along the way, would be an expensive and complicated endeavour.
Project manager Sandy Tolentino said whistle cessation assessments would have to be conducted at each crossing and infrastructure like fencing and gates would have to be installed at Murray Street and possibly near the pedestrian crossing behind Trasolini field, along with additional pavement markings and signs, at a cost of almost $180,000.
Then, added Tolentino, the city would have to submit resolutions to CP Rail and other organizations like Transport Canada’s Rail Safety Directorate for review, a process that can take years.
Residents along New Westminster’s waterfront lobbied for almost two decades to get trains to stop using their whistles at three crossings in that city’s downtown area.
Over the past year, there’s been a lot of development in Squamish. Huge new bolted climbs are being added to remote areas up FSRs, and new walls are being uncovered at close-to-town crags.
The Spirit of Squamish is a new eight-pitch 5.8 by Aaron Kristiansen and Cameron Hunt that took around nine months of effort to establish. It’s an extension of the classic Klahanie Crack, one of the Top 100 climbs in the Sea to Sky. Kristiansen noted in his new-route report, “You may discover that this celebrated classic is not the best pitch on the route.”
For gear, you need a single rack to four inches with triples in the one and two. Below is the route description. To descend, hike down the Upper Falls Trail. Look for more on this route and new Squamish climbs in the next issue of Gripped. Thanks to Kristiansen and Hunt for the effort!

The Cul De Sac Kitchen resulted from romance and a shared love of food
Stacy Thomas wasn’t much into rice before she got to know Nicki Zamora
Thomas was taking up a creative-writing program at UBC
Zamora was working as head chef of the Field & Social salad-bar chain in Vancouver
“It definitely was not a staple in my life until I met Nicki and she started introducing me to Filipino food,” Thomas said about rice on the phone with Zamora for an interview with the Straight
the two moved from East Vancouver to Squamish
where they opened Cul De Sac Kitchen later the same year
The takeout and food-delivery business operates at the Klahanie Campground off the Sea to Sky Highway (36583 Darrell Bay Road)
Clients can also have their meals at picnic tables outdoors
Cul De Sac Kitchen specializes in organic-rice and rice-noodle bowls with a selection of toppings
which reflects the culinary tradition Zamora grew up with
Rice is part of the daily life of many Filipinos
whether they’re in their native land or elsewhere in the world
Rice is also used as an ingredient in many desserts
rice can be tough or sticky or just perfect,” Zamora told the Straight
Cul De Sac Kitchen is the latest chapter in the culinary journey of Zamora
which started when she left Manila more than 20 years ago
She went to New York City to study at the Institute of Culinary Education
she apprenticed at various restaurants in the city
where she took sous chef and head chef roles in a number of establishments
She returned to the Philippines in 2010 and started teaching at the Academy for International Culinary Arts in Manila
Zamora came to Vancouver and became head chef at Koerner’s Pub in UBC
She also helped the owners of the pub open Loafe Café at the university
and Café MOA at the Museum of Anthropology
Life with Zamora has made Thomas a rice lover
“I’m excited to see exploring this with her and sharing her culture,” said Thomas
who is a journalist with the community paper Squamish Chief
Zamora does most of the food preparations at Cul De Sac Kitchen
The venture has also allowed Thomas to rediscover baking
Thomas developed a hand-pie recipe for dessert using ube (pronounced ooh-beh)
a favourite ingredient in many Filipino sweets like ube halaya jam
and often topped with leche flan milk custard
“It’s allowed me to express my own creativity in the kitchen and connect with the young me
who used to love baking and making up recipes for my family to try,” Thomas said
Zamora brings a taste of Manila to her rice bowls
which is topped with Filipino-style barbecued pork and veggie spring roll
The word kanto is Filipino for “street corner”
where grilled meats on skewers and other street food are often found in the Philippines
which is a favoured marinating sauce among many Filipinos
with roasted eggplant simmered in coconut cream and tamari
a Japanese sauce much like Chinese soy sauce
Zamora said that Cul De Sac Kitchen’s popular offerings also include the Kari Bowl or Thai green curry
The eatery gets pork and free-range eggs from Stony Mountain Farm in Squamish
The establishment also procures meat from Two Rivers Specialty Meats in North Vancouver
Food has been very central to the life shared by Thomas and Zamora
they liked exploring new restaurants and visiting hole-in-the-wall eateries
“We talk about food probably 24-7,” Thomas said
