Springfield’s Kuna is the gun I didn’t think I wanted
Over the last 10 years while under the direction of President Steve McKelvain
Springfield has made a habit of producing guns that set trends rather than follow them
For me the Kuna PCC (pistol caliber carbine) is just another example
With the iconic HK MP5 being the exception (because who among us doesn’t want one?)
I’ve never been all that enamored with semiauto PCCs
Shorty or pistol ARs in 5.56 or .300 Blackout have nearly twice the downrange energy and are only slightly larger in overall footprint
the MP5 had its purpose inside the corridors of a frigate I suppose
On hogs and wild game at any type of distance
the best I can say about the 9mm round is that it truly sucks.
Or at least that’s how I used to think when I was young and even poorer than I am now
because poor has a way of bringing out the pragmatist in people
But these days we own guns simply because they are fun to shoot—hell
even just fun to look at—and there is arguably no gun of any genre more fun to shoot than a reliable 9mm subgun like Springfield’s new Kuna.
Just so you know, Springfield didn’t name the Kuna after a wave in Hawaii
kuna is the name of Croatia’s national animal
the European pine marten that is evidently so revered there that the country named its official currency after it
The gun is made for Springfield by HS Produkt of Croatia.
The first rendition of this subby was a full-auto version
introduced in 2024 at the IWA show in Germany—and was meant to win European military and police contracts because those people love their subbies
Now Springfield is releasing it to consumers as a semi-auto version with a skeletonized folding brace made by Strike Industries
it’s got every modern feature we’ve come to expect
it’s extremely reliable thanks to its roller-delayed blowback action
its price compared to the competition is ridiculous when you consider an MP5 costs several times more—if you can find one
I hate to sound like an advertisement for Springfield here, because I rolled my eyes when I first heard it was launching a subgun. But then I shot the Kuna. Not only do I want one now, I need one.
Pros: Compact; accurate; reliable; low recoil; quality build; just fun to shoot.
Cons: Will make you realize you need another gun.

My 2025 bingo card did not have a roller-delayed PDW coming out of the factories of Springfield Armory
Springfield Armory has had a decades-long legacy of manufacturing small arms
Now we have something befitting a James Bond movie or Secret Service detail in the Kuna 9mm pistol
Follow me through my journey of reviewing this firearm in preparation for its announcement today
The Springfield Armory Kuna 9mm pistol is a blend of modern aesthetic
and intentional design that makes it both striking in appearance and practical
it assimilates a lot of the best thoughts across the firearm industry into a diminutive yet lethal package
The “elephant in the room” is that the Kuna is a direct competitor to the H&K SP5 (MSRP $3,389) and the Century Arms AP5 (MSRP $1,359) while the Kuna rings up at an MSRP of $1,149 for the variant we’re reviewing today
When something is $2,240 to $210 lighter on the wallet
it’ll make you stop in traffic and take notice
While we are looking specifically at the Kuna pistol with a Strike Industries FSA brace today
Springfield Armory does have 2 options within the Kuna series
we are playing with the Springfield Armory Kuna pistol with a Strike Industries FSA brace (SKU: KN9069B-FSA)
Your two potential offerings are listed below:
in the rare event that you should ever need service for your firearm
Springfield Armory has a lifetime warranty that stands behind all of their firearms
While I have never experienced any issues with Springfield Armory firearms that I have reviewed in the past
it is nice to know that you have that safety net and support from Springfield
I have already shared a lot of thoughts and opinions
why not some information directly from the source
This is what Springfield Armory has to say about their Kuna 9mm pistol as it enters the United States to many people’s delight:
One of the most common and recurring questions I receive reviewing firearms is
This is important because what you do and do not get will dictate what type of accessories you need to additionally buy depending on what you want your end-product or weapon system to look like
and Hand Stop are NOT Included with purchase***
Another frequent question that I receive when something new hits the market is: “What’s the upsell
What’s the 30-second elevator pitch for this product?” Hopefully
throughout this review I will answer that in-depth for you
you can decide for yourself whether or not this is a pistol that you want to add to your arsenal
these are the highlights that Springfield Armory truly wants you to take home with you:
To test the Springfield Armory Kuna 9mm, I ran a bunch of Federal Premium’s Gold Medal Action Pistol 147 Grain Full Metal Jacket (FMJ)
I’ll gladly give Federal a shout-out quickly because nearly every 9mm review I’ve completed in the past year I’ve been shooting this ammo
All good attributes you’d want and expect from your range ammo
thank you to Federal for providing that ammo
I fired roughly 500 rounds of 9mm through this pistol with the bulk of it being Gold Medal Action Pistol
but also some other random 9mm ammo I had laying around as well
Even the fistfuls of random ammo I jammed into mags
The Kuna comes with a pair of 30-round magazines
while these are proprietary they are competitively priced at approximately $25.00 (MSRP)
The 30-round magazines for the Kuna had somewhat stiff springs at the outset
but the longer I shot the more they loosened in a positive way
The first several magazines were “thumb beaters,” but the rest were a lot easier to load
Something I felt compelled to add to this pistol was a hand stop. The magwell is textured where you could grip with your non-dominant hand there, but I didn’t want to be “choked up” on the firearm. So, I added a Strike Industries hand stop. The Strike Industries Bikini Hand Stop (MSRP $12.95 - 2 pack) is minimalism personified
and is exactly what I was hoping for in adding a hand stop to this platform
Enough to catch my hand from touching a hot silencer or muzzle
but also tiny enough to not detract from the sexy aesthetic of this PDW
This pistol was everything that you might imagine it to be: light
I had zero malfunctions in testing and the longer I fired it the more I loved it
This is a defensive firearm that I would deploy at 50 yards or less
My metric for accuracy was essentially mag-dumping onto steel at 20 - 25 yards
We’re talking about blowing through a mag as fast as you can
Doing this on silhouette steel is a cakewalk (because it is an enormous target)
I also did this repeatedly on 5” steel gongs never missing
that made shooting by volume a lot easier as well
To hush this lil’ baby and to engage in some more dynamic range shooting, I headed to Josh Froelich’s F5 Range in Minnesota
If you are searching for some top-tier training
or want to hit an open range day to clap steel out to 500 yards
He’s an amazing guy who is running an equally amazing facility
The silencer I used to test the Kuna was a JK 105 CCX from JK Armament
Simple direct thread attachment on the ½” x 28 TPI muzzle and you can let the good times roll
I tested this firearm 50/50 suppressed versus unsuppressed - and if you have a silencer - slap that bad boy on there
It’ll make you giddy like a kid on Christmas morning to shoot this suppressed while clapping steel
The addition of a suppressor did not change my point-of-impact or accuracy
I have been writing for TFB for 9 years, and this is the first time I wore a suit to the range (yes, I did it so I could LARP like I’m some secret service dude). Also, I did a lot of vehicle work to test the handiness of deploying this pistol in tight spaces (something that is allowed at F5 Range in Minnesota)
The Strike Industries FSA Brace is very tight and has a bit of a learning curve to deploying it quickly
For people who may be in security detail or law enforcement as their occupation
this was very handy to be manipulating around vehicles and tight spaces
Even with a suppressor fitted you could easily clear a steering wheel and pull it out from the passenger’s seat or floor mat
If you need to hop out of a vehicle and be on the move
that is also an easy task for how small this braced-pistol is
I felt very confident pulling this pistol out of a vehicle
and gaining a proper sight alignment to take an effective shot
Whether you are jumping out of an enclosed cab Ranger
So, what are my final thoughts on the Springfield Armory Kuna 9mm pistol?..
There is a tremendous amount to like about this pistol
The price and value proposition is off the charts
and reliability at - or significantly above - its competitors
An $1,149 MSRP feels like a misprint to me at this point
My one complaint is that Springfield should give you the Strike Industries Bikini Hand Stop that I added to mine for this review since they are already giving you one Strike Industries product in their FSA brace
I had strong concerns I was going to scorch my hand without a hand stop
I have never been a big “roller-delayed guy” or had desires to own this category of firearm
but goll damn… Springfield is going to make me spend money I hadn’t intended on spending because this pistol is simply that good

Idaho — A new traffic light in Kuna is improving safety along Avalon Street
The City of Kuna upgraded the Avalon and Kay Street intersection with $1.12 million they secured through the ITD Initiatives Program Grant
this place has really taken off," says Bill Doughty
He has witnessed the number of traffic signals in town grow along with the population
but I did notice that it does backup traffic on the main road a little bit
but it does help you get onto the main road from the side streets," Doughty said
The upgrade makes it easier for drivers to turn from side streets
coming from places like the post office and Albertsons
I'd go to the post office and try to get back onto the highway
and it would take a while because there was no way because of the traffic," Doughty said
So it just helps to make it safer for everybody
(for) pedestrians and people driving," says Laura Lagier
The new traffic signal brings Kuna's total to 22
including both pedestrian crossings and stop lights
I'm sure we're gonna have a lot more at many of the other corners as this city grows," Doughty said

Kuna Butte is a great place for off-road recreation just south of town, but its also littered with a lot of illegally dumped trash. A local organization plans to clean up the area this Saturday, April 12th, and you are invited.
you can take it to a dump," said Kristina Schmid with Mountain West Recreation Alliance
She says she's fed up with the amount of trash illegally dumped in Kuna
"I am not a person that can just sit back and say that's OK," said Schmid
The local organization does service projects in the community on public lands.
because the trash is growing excessively over here," she added
Kuna Butte is the main target for their upcoming trash cleanup
and Schmid says past events have removed at least 7 tons of trash
I sometimes see people come out here with campers and their dirt bikes
and they'll spend the weekend out here," she said
Use of the area — especially for anything with wheels — is limited by the thousands of nails and burnt piles of trash littered around the trails
"Those that play out here now feel like they have a responsibility to be here and keep it clean," Schmid said
and J&M Sanitation is donating dumpsters to the cleanup
"I will have supplies for everyone: gloves
these areas are hard to completely restore
and we just hope to minimize the impact at least to the wildlife," Schmid said
Company files for Gemstone Technology Park near Meta's development
Diode Ventures is planning a data center campus outside Boise
First reported by BoiseDev
Diode Ventures is proposing a data center campus on 620 acres near Locust Grove and Barker Roads in Kuna
Kuna Planning and Zoning Commission voted unanimously last week to recommend approval to rezone the land to M-1 light industrial
as well as the related comprehensive plan amendment
The proposal will now go before the city council for approval
Diode’s website describes the Gemstone Technology Park as a 620-acre proposed data center site located just outside Boise that is in early development
A site plan suggests up to five buildings could be developed on the campus
References to the Gemstone Park surfaced in Kuna City documents back in July 2024
According to Kuna Economic Development Director Morgan Treasure
Diode approached the city about the project in the fall of 2023
the land is currently owned by former Kuna Mayor Duane Yamamoto
Yamamoto was forced to come to Idaho during WW2 and kept at the Minidoka Japanese Internment Camp
Meta is developing a large campus in the area, some 6 miles east of Diode’s project. The company announced plans for a new data center campus in Kuna in Ada County in early 2022
Meta originally aimed to invest $800 million developing a 960,000 sq ft facility, but was one of around a dozen sites temporarily paused as part of a design re-scoping to accommodate AI infrastructure and liquid cooling

Idaho — As the Treasure Valley continues to grow
more traffic is putting pressure on corridors like SH-69 to Kuna
the Idaho Transportation Department is planning a major expansion of Meridian Road to accommodate the growing traffic demands
"Bumper to bumper from about the time you get off the freeway
all the way down to about Columbia or a little bit past," says Lauren Anderson
describing the daily traffic congestion along Meridian Road during rush hour
has witnessed significant changes to the area's infrastructure over the decades
"Kuna-Meridian Highway used to be two lanes
The road evolved from its original two lanes to its current five-lane configuration through projects in 1991 and 2001
ITD is looking to expand it further to seven lanes total — three in each direction plus a raised median to separate the two sides
A smaller five-lane expansion is planned from Kuna Road to Orchard Avenue
"That's gonna take some getting used to," says Anderson
explains that this project aims to get ahead of the area's rapid growth
and we're trying to get a little bit ahead of the curve here," Wasdahl says
The expansion project will serve as a guide for future development along the corridor
"It's not your standard 'we're going to take this whole corridor and build it out.' It's more of how do we build this piece by piece," Wasdahl explains
Building it piece by piece means working with future developers who will contribute to building parts of the project
"Commercial developers want to see how they're going to interact with the roadway
We'd like to have a good interaction with the houses that are being built," says Wasdahl
the population living within two miles of Highway 69 is expected to grow by 55% in the next 25 years
which will significantly increase traffic on the already congested corridor
"We know what we need to build out there to handle the future traffic

Idaho — A tight 3-2 vote at Tuesday's Kuna City Council meeting rezoned a property in southeast Kuna from agriculture to industrial— paving the way for the Gemstone Technology Park project
After hours of public comment in support and against the data center
and a tie was broken by Kuna Mayor Joe Stear
RELATED: Micron builds new childcare center to address community needs
"I think this is a good usage that is allowed by the development agreement that provides the neighbors with a lot less traffic
a lot less other things going on that we don't necessarily think our roads are capable of
and our school district is capable of," says Dana Hennis
Hennis says the data center is the city's best option
or much more residential housing that our school district can't support out there
and we don't really have the utilities structure out that way," added Hennis
worry about the long-term impacts of the project
"The main part that is really concerning is the construction will take 10 years," said Murray
Murray says she grew up in a farming community in northern Utah and watched firsthand as farmland turned industrial
the farms surrounding [us] all turned to either industrial or neighborhoods
and so now my parent's home is the only farm—surrounded by warehouses and neighborhoods," says Murray
Kuna already has an industrial area on the east side of town — where the Meta data center is currently being built.
Diode Ventures, the company behind the Gemstone Technology Park project
says they appreciate the community's feedback and have confidence in their ability to be good stewards of the land in Kuna
They also indicated that they have plans to dish out some $40 million to fund improvements for the city's school district
It's just the developments that are well thought out
the projects that are well thought out— I think make the difference," added Hennis

Home » Reviews » Springfield Armory KUNA: A Modern Roller-Delayed 9mm Carbine for a Grand
We first got word of the HS Produkt Kuna on a factory visit to Croatia
just before the world lost its collective marbles due to a Chinese lab leak
and Springfield has added it to their considerable list of SKUs
importing it for the general public as a large format handgun.
should you consider this particular wannabe subgun
There are essentially three operating systems available to the end user
The most basic — straight blowback — has the advantage of being inexpensive to manufacture
but comes with the downside of a heavy bolt and more recoil than the 9mm Luger cartridge has any right to generate.
Gas piston operation is a comparative rarity
but it sacrifices simplicity for low reciprocating mass
there are the various flavors of roller-delayed carbines
ranging from the iconic MP5 and its clones
to newcomers such as Angstadt Arms’ UDP9 and the Stribog.
The Kuna uses a version of the roller-delayed blowback system
but it’s a clean-sheet design incorporating a lot of refinements.
Rather than start with a rifle-caliber carbine and then adapt it to a pistol cartridge like most AR-15 designs
the Kuna is wrapped around a magwell dimensioned for the 9mm and 40 S&W.
which has largely slipped into the collective memory hole
Because certain South American police forces still have a fondness for it
Casting a jaundiced eye at the area immediately in front of the mag catch
there appears to be more than enough space to accommodate the extra 4mm length of a 10mm versus 40 S&W round
and the operating stroke is also plenty long enough.
Don’t be too surprised too if there’s a line extension in the future
just to service the shouty nerds in the comments section who whine for a 10mm version
then purchase enough for all of their friends — i.e.
It’s easy to go bust in the gun biz listening to your customers.
two-position feed design and appear both well thought out and executed with curved
translucent polymer bodies and reinforced steel feed lips.
these don’t appear to have been lovingly crafted from gossamer spun by elves and blessed by the Pope himself
so you won’t need a second mortgage in order to stock up
We’d like to see a 20-round version for use in messenger bags and backpacks
the two 30 rounders that ship with the gun are a good start.
All controls can be operated with either hand
and the bolt release is positioned so that it can be hit with either the index finger of the master hand
or the support thumb during a reload.
the safety can be engaged regardless of whether the hammer is cocked
and the levers fall naturally under the thumb
but we found it’s better to use the trigger finger’s knuckle to reapply it
Shooters are never happy with their purchase
and most will find some way to make it their own; one of the quickest and easiest mods is to switch in your favorite pistol grip.
the process is simplified by using an AR-15 fitment
The one that comes from the factory has the same texture as the Echelon handgun and is fairly vertical.
The polymer lower is attached to the aluminum upper by means of two captive takedown pins
the rear of which locks the Pic-railed endcap in place
Slide the endcap downward about a ¼ inch and pull it free
use the charging handle to slide out the recoil spring
That’s about as far as you’ll need to go to keep the gun running — hose it off with brake cleaner
then spray everything with oil — but further disassembly isn’t at all complicated.
Fire control components are unique to the Kuna
and disconnector will look familiar to AR owners
they’re held inside a chassis to form a trigger pack
which can be removed by first pulling out the safety selectors.
Critical components are silver and appear to be nickel boron coated for wear resistance and lubricity
Our sample started out with a 6-pound single-stage trigger with some creep
and more of a rollover feel — there’s enough bearing surface to work with
should anyone want to attempt a trigger job
The Kuna’s serialized upper receiver starts out as an aluminum extrusion
Its full length Picatinny top rail provides a recess for some of the best backup iron sights we’ve seen on a subgun
they’re a bit too low to use with a stock that’s been set up for optics.
and provide both windage and elevation adjustment
non-reciprocating charging handle can be swapped without tools from left to right side
tipping the scales at over 19 ounces (as compared to a 9mm AR
which typically weigh in at around 22 to 25 ounces for carrier and buffer)
In order to cram everything into a small space
the gun relies not on a powerful recoil spring
but a single roller at the 12 o’clock position
which locks the bolt to the barrel trunnion when in battery.
spring-loaded weight forward of the main bolt and at rest
allowing the weight to travel about 3/16 of an inch to the rear
freeing up the roller and unlocking the bolt
the bolt runs into a squishy polymer buffer
Due to being designed around the 40 S&W cartridge
we’d be interested in playing around with lightening the bolt and seeing what that did to both recoil impulse and bolt speed — there’s certainly plenty of steel available to mill out
One of the first things we did to our sample Kuna
even before sending the first rounds downrange
was to file a Form 1 and turn it into a legal short-barreled rifle
it was time to replace the Strike Industries folding brace it arrived with and add a stock
because while braces are a useful thumb in the eye to the ATF
they’re not as useful as a proper stock.
which offers a solid lockup and adjustments for both length of pull and comb height
From the same company came a handstop and stubby vertical foregrip
and an M-LOK panel to insulate the right side of the handguard area.
The left side received a remote pressure switch
wired to a SureFire Turbo Mini Scout light
while aiming was handled by means of a Trijicon MRO
A Dead Air Mojave 9 rounded out the ensemble
We shot the Kuna initially with its muzzle brake installed
it probably wasn’t going to have much of an effect
9mm Luger simply doesn’t have the gas volume
or pressure to work a comp very effectively compared to a centerfire rifle round
It wasn’t until we started pushing the pace
firing multiple double taps on B/C-sized steel
that we noticed the dot was actually being pushed down on recoil
then would jiggle to the right as the action cycled.
but it never left the confines of the target at 40 yards
most consistent hammers we’ve seen on a subgun-sized carbine.
If you can press the trigger without disturbing your sight picture
the Kuna will keep pace with full-sized guns like the MP5 when it comes to speed and placing multiple rounds on target
this has ambi controls placed where a normal human can reach them
and a magwell that doesn’t require the accuracy of a laser-guided anti-tank weapon to hit.
hammer-forged barrel proved to be capable of the kind of accuracy you’d expect
and we had no trouble shooting 2-inch groups at 50 yards with both S&B 124-grain ball and Federal Hydrashock Deep
this seems like another winner from HS Produkt
If you’re looking for a compact and effective backpack or vehicle gun
the Kuna delivers a lot of controllable firepower in a very compact package that’s easy to shoot well
Those in the market for a PDW would be well advised to consider it
as would anyone looking for a fun recreational shooter that would perform in PCC matches.
one with a Strike Industries brace and one without for 150 bucks less
which by happy coincidence is almost the cost of a tax stamp …

Well as the only person I’m aware of who’s shot both the Kuna and the Lucansky Stinger… what’s the call
Is an adapter needed to mount the A3 folding brace to the Kuna
I’m trying to order and the last step in selecting an adapter
it should come with everything needed to mount to the Kuna
The Kuna has Picatinny 1913 on the rear cap as the mounting interface

is making progress on its new data center located on the outskirts of Kuna
With the exterior buildings of the data center complete
workers are now focusing on the interior to complete the data halls
These are peak months for construction — with more than 1,400 construction workers and tradesmen working on the project
the facility is expected to create more than 100 jobs in the community
The new data center is being built near the intersection of King Road and South Cole Road
Meta says the data center represents a more than $800 million investment into Idaho
"Meta's data center investment of nearly $1 billion will generate new jobs and foster innovative business and community opportunities within the state of Idaho," said Cody Allred
Meta is also planning to fund a new water and sewer system for the City of Kuna
The company also has partnered with the Kuna School District to create STEM-based learning opportunities for students
Idaho (CBS2) — The Kuna School District is considering a district-wide policy to ban cell phones
and other personal devices during the school day
is part of a growing trend in Idaho to reduce classroom distractions and improve learning environments
According to School Board Chair Kimberlee Nixon
the district is currently focused on gathering community feedback before making a decision
"It's important for our patrons and our community members to know that we're still in that listening phase," Nixon said
"Even though we have another policy to look at
So what we really want them to do is to take a look at that policy that will be coming out tomorrow and give us a read-through
We want to make sure that we're doing what's right by our community."
The proposed policy would prohibit cell phone use during school hours
requiring students to keep their devices away from the first bell to the last
Nixon said the motivation for the policy stems from a desire to create better learning conditions
"As a board member and as a person who wants our students to do well
I think instructional time is the most important thing I can give to that student and to that teacher," Nixon said
"When they're done with their assignments
they want to immediately take a look at their phones to see what's going on."
The proposal also comes in response to Idaho's "Phone-Free Learning Act," which provides $5,000 in funding to districts that implement phone bans
Nixon noted the district has looked to other schools with successful policies for guidance
"The research shows basically your top kids kind of stay the same
but your low and middle kids with a phone policy really have made large improvements in their test scores and in their ability to stay focused on things in the classroom
along with their mental well-being of not being worried about bullying or that kind of stuff," Nixon said
the board continues to weigh the pros and cons
emphasizing that any final decision will take community feedback into account
Idaho (CBS2) — The head baker and co-owner of Hudson Baking Co
has been diagnosed with metastatic cancer again
In a rally of support, hundreds of regulars have been frequenting the bakery even more and donating thousands of dollars through a special tip jar on the counter and a GoFundMe page
Hudson said he plans to continue working 15-hour days
seven days a week through his upcoming treatment as he did during his last battle with cancer in 2021
just three months after opening the bakery
The plea on the fundraising page reads: As Aaron navigates treatment
we hope to keep our shop doors open and continue raising our family
and we are determined to do everything in our power to ensure he receives the care he needs
We kindly ask for your prayers during this challenging time
We hope to continue baking for our community for many years to come
and we are eternally grateful for the incredible support we have received
Thank you for standing with us during this difficult journey."

More funding is headed to the Kuna School District after early election results show voters approved of that $7.2 million school levy over two years
I'm your Kuna neighborhood reporter Brady Caskey and I've been covering this issue for months
After previous levy attempts failed in May
the district tells me they had to cut $2.5 million from their budget this year

The new funding will be spread out over two years to help cover costs for teacher salaries
Most of that money will maintain 37 existing teaching positions and add six more
"We are so grateful to the voters of the Kuna School District for passing our two-year supplemental levy
and community members made all the difference."
Passing the levy allows the district to continue offering full-day kindergarten
and reduce class sizes for the next two school years
