The hilarious 2007 Broadway musical stage adaptation of the hit film comes to So
If there was ever a funny summer "popcorn movie" equivalent of a Broadway musical
the sparkly LEGALLY BLONDE - THE MUSICAL could definitely qualify
Southern California audiences can now savor the fact that a brand new
Broadway-caliber regional production of this hilarious show is currently on stage at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts through May 18th that's filled with non-stop laughs
a ridiculously good-looking and musically-talented cast
and production values that make it all just a genuinely fun time all-around
very minor opening night mishaps (missed lines
visually pleasing production was genuinely the most fun I have had at a musical so far this year
Considering how seemingly rare a top-tier quality production of this particular musical gets mounted these days
this La Mirada production—presented by McCoy Rigby Entertainment—is definitely a must-see if you're in So
and a not-so-subtle message that calls for female empowerment and self-confidence
the satirical musical celebrates one's inner strength
While the show is pretty much how I remember it
I did notice that a few slight lyrical and dialogue changes have since been enacted into this new licensed version of the show
which apparently—according to an insightful conversation I had with a cast member at the show's opening night after-party—has become a welcome change for many in the production
since the changes were implemented in order to remove some of the more problematic parts of the show that
sustained laughs that filled the theater on Opening Night
it's safe to say that these changes didn't lessen the show's comedic prowess or the enchanting way it effortlessly balances humor and heart
frenetically fun opener of "Omigod You Guys!" right up until the finalé cast song
provides such a welcome respite of laughter that many of us really needed in an ever-increasingly depressing nightmare reality we are living in lately
Featuring a likable cast and impressive Broadway-caliber machinations from its sets and costumes, to its dazzling high-tech projections, bubbly musical accompaniment, and athletic choreography, this fun but deceptively sharp musical follows the journey of plucky UCLA undergrad Elle Woods (the adorably winning Kathryn Brunner)
a fashionable and seemingly superficial sorority Queen Bee from Malibu
after unexpectedly getting dumped by her handsome but conservative ex-boyfriend Warner Huntington III (Nicholas McDonough) for not being "serious" enough
decides to enroll at Harvard Law School to win him back and prove that she's not just some pink-clad dumb blonde with impeccable fashion sense
but a person worthy of being a successful man's compatible partner
who slaaaays her high notes and snarls her derision to perfection) who immediately stereotypes Elle as just another stupid person who shouldn't even be here at Harvard
Elle gains her new client's trust and friendship
And in a fun meta twist, Elle also gets "help" and often wildly animated advice from her three main Delta Nu sorority sisters Serena (Bella Hicks), Pilar (Aurelia Michael)
who appear at Harvard in her imagination as her own personal "Greek Chorus," advising and commenting on the action
Elle learns her value and abilities beyond her exterior beauty
as the musical smartly utilizes stereotypes as a way to subvert them
Elle starts the show as a mostly typical "dumb" blonde archetype
but gradually shatters expectations without ever abandoning her true self at any time during the process
the musical encourages its audiences to look beyond appearances and assumptions even as we laugh at the silliness of it all
Adam Ramirez's costumes pop with early-aughts-era color
the orchestra under musical director Ryan O'Connell's baton sounded caffeinated and lively
As one of the few musicals utilizing pop music sounds as its soundtrack
the musical presents a perfect harmony between the show's fun score with the show's upbeat
And perhaps the production's most thrilling feature is its assembled acting ensemble
many of whom are perfectly cast for their respective roles
The believably adorkable Grant—whom I enjoyed in his kinda-villainy supporting role on the sadly short-lived TV musical Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist—makes for a convincingly swoon-worthy "soft boi" archetype
which translated well in his lovely chemistry with Brunner's Elle
Mintzer's Vivienne (and her awesome high note belt) is the perfect foil for Elle
and we totally buy it when she switches up alliances in the second act
Staudenmayer is excellent as oily law professor Callahan
while Papageorge who plays his client Brooke should be lauded for singing in full voice while doing a full workout routine without a hint of huffing and puffing
I am also especially enamored by Neri-Best who plays Elle's new friend Paulette
not just because it's lovely to see a fellow Filipino actor cast in a role about someone who sings longingly about her Irish roots (haha)
enhancing it further with a phenomenal singing voice to boot (she sounds so good that even a minor missed lyric restart on opening night is greeted with thunderous
the sexy UPS delivery guy who catches Paulette's lustful eyes
a pro-feminist story—one that reclaims femininity as a source of strength rather than a weakness
Elle is often easily dismissed at first because of her personality
but the musical makes a powerful point: intelligence and ambition are not incompatible with fashion
and wants to always boost others and fight/advocate for them
we bear witness to Elle's admirable evolution from someone chasing a man (who saw her as nothing else but pretty arm candy) to someone chasing her own dreams (but
it also delivers surprisingly deep commentary on gender expectations
and the healing attributes of personal growth
feel-good show (although we truly need those now more than ever)
and intelligence are never mutually exclusive—and to always not judge a book by its ratty corduroy or pink

Blue Pen Theatre, a new voice in L.A.'s independent theater scene, launches its inaugural production with STUPID FUCKING BIRD by Aaron Posner-a sharp, hilarious, and deeply human remix of Chekhov's The Seagull.
Ezekiel Theater Company has announced the world premiere of To Be Liberated, a powerful new play commemorating the 80th anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japanese occupation.
The piece feels like a sophisticated relative of Cirque du Soleil and, with a striking funeral procession, a chorus of women villagers, and a revolving quartet of confessions, somehow also lands like a well-worn gem of musical theatre.

Beckman players huddle before Thursday’s road game with La Mirada
Beckman High School’s softball team put up a battle against CIF Division 1 powerhouse La Mirada on Thursday afternoon but fell to the Matadores 3-0 in a non-league game at La Mirada
Sophomore Alison Ortega pitched a four-hit complete game and struck out seven as La Mirada notched its 14th consecutive victory
improved their record to 9-0 at home and recorded their sixth shutout of the season
“I felt my screwball and curveball were working well today and it was an amazing win for us,” said Ortega
“They had runners on base in five of the seven innings
but I just stayed totally focused with my catcher
but I just ignored them and worked on each batter.”
“Alison made her adjustments and kept her composure even when she wasn’t getting the calls,” added La Mirada sophomore catcher Riley Hilliard
Matadores coach Brent Tuttle praised Ortega’s efforts
“Alison has really done a great job for us this year; she’s learned so much from last season and she wants the ball all the time and she has really stepped it up,” said Tuttle
Juliana Rivara led off the bottom of the second for the Matadores and ended up at second base when a fly to left field was misplayed
She moved to third on a passed ball and scored one out later on an infield ground out
The Patriots starting pitcher Kiyomi Okamoto
The junior right hander held the Matadores in check as she struck out five batters and did not allow a walk
Okamoto gave up a base hit and then back-to-back walks
Jess Peralta relieved Okamota with the bases loaded and no outs
gave up a single but retired three of the four batters she faced
but La Mirada pushed across two more runs and led 3-0
“We had scoring opportunities in a number of innings
but we couldn’t get that timely hit when we needed it,” said Patriots first year coach Josh Ertz
“We got in a pickle when they got the bases loaded and they scored a few runs
But our team is young and we’re bonding and starting to understand our abilities
La Mirada is a Division 1 team and we battled with them
Beckman (12-7) left runners on base in five of the seven innings as Ortega was able to pitch out of several jams and keep the Patriots off the scoreboard
Beckman third baseman Diya Malik said the team is going to be fine
“We came into today’s game knowing that we are playing a Division 1 team but we were loose,” said Malik
“We didn’t want to let them get into our heads and we played good defense and pitched well
and it will help us as we get back into league play.”
—Reese Hilliard had two hits for La Mirada
—Beckman shortstop Katelyn Park made an excellent leaping catch in the fourth inning
The play begins its run in Los Angeles this month
Linda Buchwald

After a year in which we made a pair of deep playoff runs in the CIF-SS D1 and to the championship game of the CIF-Southern D1 Regional we bring back a majority of our lineup/rotation from that team giving up plenty of experience on the varsity level that is backed up by a depth of new faces that should have us in a great spot to compete for another deep run
With arguably their deepest roster in recent years returning
should be eagerly anticipating the start of the season
Add in the debut of new facilities that are amongst the best in the state
and the vibe and expectations around the Matadores is very high
and timely hitting are all staples of a Zurn led team and the only difference this year is they have a few guys that can leave the yard in a hurry
With a quartet of senior Division I commits at the top of the order
it's the depth behind those guys them that will pave the way to success for La Mirada next spring
With as deep a pitching rotation as I can remember for Coach Zurn
La Mirada will once again be amongst the premier programs in the state next spring

Legally Blonde: The Musical (4/25/25-5/18/25)
LA MIRADA THEATRE is at 14900 La Mirada Blvd.
The rematch wasn’t so dissimilar, with a couple of exceptions: Gisselle Barron’s ankle and Brianna Briggs’ box sense.
La Mirada on Saturday claimed its second CIF Southern California Regional girls’ soccer title in a decade, riding Briggs’ clinical finish nine minutes into the second half and some expert defensive work to follow for a 1-0 Division IV triumph.
It was a most anticlimactic end to a historic season for a freshman-heavy Lightning team that marched to the Southern Section Division 4 championship, conceding just twice in five games, then survived a penalty-kick shootout and an overtime to reach the closest thing California has to a state championship.
Sage Hill (12-4-3) permitted its guests just one good look at goal, and that’s all it took.
“It’s bittersweet,” Lightning coach Issac Sierra said of the outcome. “But that’s why we love this game so much. ... This team is resilient. They fought. They wanted every part of this game, and from the jump, they came out fighting. Unfortunately, the ball didn’t bounce our way, and [La Mirada] deserved the win.”
Sage Hill again was the better side most of the way, the more dangerous side, and built considerable advantages in shots (14-6), shots on target (7-3) and dangerous situations (10-4). An inability to play through lines and create inside the attacking third — against a resolute defense for La Mirada (14-8-6) that posted its fourth successive shutout and sixth in eight postseason outings — was costly.
“Gisselle is an impact player,” Sierra said. “We knew it was going to be difficult without her, because of how much she can contribute offensively and how she breaks teams down.”
The Lightning “definitely needed her,” said junior goalkeeper Finley Maynard, who shepherded three postseason penalty-kick wins. “She’s a really big asset in the middle. She can move the ball really, really well. [How she holds the ball] is really impressive. ... It’s not ideal that we didn’t have her.”
Sage Hill instead was, until a frenzied finish that failed to reach fruition, all about set-piece service into the goalmouth. Most of the hazard was produced by freshman center back Jaden Rall’s long throw-ins, more so before halftime. La Mirada deftly fended them off — well-placed free kicks and corner kicks from Rall and Sydney Patel, too — primarily through freshman midfielder Zoey Santiago, at 5-foot-10 a towering presence here.
“She was all over every ball,” Maynard said. “She was probably their best player, for sure.”
Matadores coach Dave Christensen estimated that Santiago “probably won 99% of those. Without her, we’d be hard-pressed.”
The Lightning, most efficient from the flanks, created chances — Charlotte Cheng and Capri Hall got to headers from Rall tosses early in the first half — and Ceci Ball found the net in the 27th minute, from a chaotic goalmouth scrum after Fiona Flynn headed another Rall throw. She was flagged offside.
La Mirada created nearly nothing of consequence before the break, but was on top of the Lightning to start the second half, creating three successive corner kicks, then penetrating on the left wing — sophomore center back Marley Walker clinically closed it down — just before Briggs’ goal, her sixth of the season.
The goal, from a counterattack, was a one-off. It was the only time either side was able to isolate a forward in the box. Briggs, her back to the goal and Rall marking her, took a feed from Zoé Chang on her right, whirled to her right into space, and fired to the right side of the net.
Maynard, who was going the other way, said Briggs “faked me out.”
“Bri can turn a ball really well,” said Christensen, who has guided the Matadores to the regionals seven times in the past 11 seasons. “She did a great job with a player on her back of turning it and cutting it back against the goalkeeper. Fantastic finish.”
The Matadores’ defense made the difference the rest of the way, killing four good Sage Hill chances — three of them during six and half minutes of added stoppage time — and cutting off another four forays through senior midfielder Marissa Valdez.
Those three arrived in succession. La Mirada senior goalkeeper Mia Cook herded a Rall header from a free kick, then tipped another Rall header, from a long ball, over her crossbar. Freshman striker Keila Fukuda hit the crossbar on the ensuing corner kick. Nothing came of three more treks into the box.
Two championship plaques would have been nice. One is grand.
“[Soccer is a] crazy game,” Maynard said. “There’s never a guarantee that you’re going to win or lose. It’s just what day it is. Anything can happen. ... I’m so proud we got to the state finals. CIF [Southern Section] was the one we were most focused on, because we didn’t think we were going to get this far, even to state.
“CIF was a huge accomplishment, and finalist in the state is an amazing accomplishment.”

Birmingham 1: Garret Rodriguez went three for three
John Short had a two-run triple and Greg Prophet had a two-run double to lead Cypress in a Boras Classic consolation game

A single-family home in Hollywood is slated to make way for an Executive Directive 1 affordable housing development, according to a recent application to the Los Angeles Department of City Planning
the owner and applicant behind the project at 5642 W
calls for the construction of a five-story building featuring 49 one-bedroom apartments without on-site parking
Requested entitlements include density bonus incentives to permit a larger building than zoning rules would otherwise allow. The project eligible, as the apartments are to be restricted to rent by low- and moderate-income households
KB Fard Architects is designing the project
which is depicted in renderings as a contemporary low-rise structure capped by a rooftop amenity deck
The development site sits one block to the west of the US-101 Freeway, and one block to the north of the new Echelon Studios Hollywood complex now under construction on Santa Monica Boulevard

Print A reputed member of the Mexican Mafia was wounded in a shooting Saturday that left a second man dead in Los Angeles County
Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies responded to a Veterans of Foreign Wars hall on Valley View Avenue in La Mirada
where they found two men with gunshot wounds in the parking lot
Eric Ortiz, 34, died from gunshot wounds to the chest, De Jong said. The lieutenant declined to name the surviving victim, who remained hospitalized in critical condition. A law enforcement source who wasn’t authorized to speak publicly identified him as Juan Garcia, a Mexican Mafia member known as “Topo.”
De Jong said a group of gang members who were not veterans had rented the VFW hall for some type of gathering
Most attendees had left by the time police arrived
and De Jong said his detectives have “no suspect information whatsoever.”
Originally from the Florencia 13 gang, Garcia, 63, served more than 17 years in federal prison for racketeering. He was convicted of inciting a riot at the Lompoc prison in 2003.
Samuel Villalba became a member of the Mexican Mafia in the 1980s. Police found him shot to death in a homeless camp in 2021 and recently arrested one suspected gunman.
That melee started after prisoners brewed up a batch of contraband alcohol known as pruno, according to a law enforcement report reviewed by The Times. A lieutenant was escorting an inmate to his office for a breathalyzer test when Garcia stepped in front of him.
“You are not taking anybody,” he told the lieutenant, then shoved him. “Den les en la madre,” Garcia said to the other inmates in the module, which prison officials translated as an order to assault the guards.
Eight inmates attacked the lieutenant, punching, kicking and choking him, the report says. As he and about 40 other staff members tried to escape the cellblock, Garcia demanded that one of the officers apologize to him.
The officer hesitated. An inmate punched him in the face. “I’m sorry,” he told Garcia, who then let the staff leave, according to the report. The document says they carried with them a Muslim chaplain who had been beaten unconscious and a food services worker who had been attacked with a broomstick.
The cellblock emptied of prison officials, Garcia broke all the glass in the module and sprayed a fire extinguisher, the report says. With the help of other inmates, he barricaded the entryway with washing and vending machines, then proceeded to smash all of the televisions, microwaves, sprinkler systems and ice machines. Other inmates also beat a prisoner who did not participate in the melee, according to the report.
The associate warden issued riot gear and masks to the guards, who quelled the riot with tear gas, pepper spray, and “flash stun” and “multi blast” grenades, the document says. Twenty-eight staff members and four inmates, including Garcia, suffered injuries ranging from cuts and bruises to a hernia and serious head trauma.
“This was a show of power on the part of inmate Garcia,” an investigator wrote in the report.
After pleading guilty to the crime of rioting at a federal facility, Garcia was sentenced in 2005 to another six years on top of his racketeering term.
A year after his release in 2020, Los Angeles Police Department officers were patrolling 64th Street in South L.A. when they saw a silver Volkswagen Passat double-parked on the wrong side of the street, according to a probation report.
They saw the driver, Garcia, hand a gun to a man standing next to the car, the report says. The man took off running. When the police caught up to him, the 31-year-old member of Florencia 13 seemed “afraid to answer my questions and denied knowing Garcia,” the arresting officer wrote in a report.
Ralph Rocha made secret tapes documenting his tenure as an informant. Were they an insurance policy? A way to blow off steam? An early stab at a screenplay?
Convicted of possessing a gun as a felon, Garcia was sent back to federal prison in 2022 to serve 15 months. Before he was sentenced, Steve Quinonez, chief executive of the Florence Firestone Community Organization, wrote in a letter to the judge that Garcia volunteered for his group.
A “great leader with a big heart,” Garcia mentored young people not to take “the wrong path in life,” he wrote.
De Jong, the sheriff’s lieutenant, asked that anyone with information about Saturday’s shooting contact detectives at (323) 890-5500.

The Tony-winning ‘Seinfeld' star headlines a superb
lively production of the beloved classic directed by Lonny Price
I still remember the first time I ever heard actor Jason Alexander's voice in a musical
While a freshman in high school, the very first original Broadway cast recording my dad ever bought for me was the album for Jerome Robbins' BROADWAY, the Tony Award-winning musical theater anthology that showcased multiple musicals that were either directed or choreographed by theater legend Jerome Robbins
the genius choreographer whose industry-defining work made an indelible mark in shows like WEST SIDE STORY
That musical's featured lead actor just happened to be Alexander
who not only played the show's affable host and narrator
but also took on the part of Tevye in the show's curated suite of songs from FIDDLER ON THE ROOF
I would watch him on TV win the Tony Award for his role in the musical
had always stayed with me as I played that double-CD over and over again for many years thereafter
especially since I was a classic musical-loving kid who
had never even seen a live stage musical other than the ones I myself performed in for middle school productions (I decided to quit performing right after an 8th grade bully yelled a slur towards me while singing a solo in the school's big musical
Robbins' musicals made quite an impression on me from afar
and I finally got to see Alexander in person play Tevye from a seat in the fourth row during the opening night performance of a brand-new production of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF
presented by McCoy Rigby Entertainment that is now currently on stage at La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts through December 1
A lively, emotionally-grounded, classic-leaning staging that still somehow manages to feel fresh, reinvigorated, and much more searing compared to the multiple other productions I have seen of the show over the decades, this latest SoCal-area revival of the nine-time Tony Award-winning landmark 1964 musical—here directed by Alexander's MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG castmate Lonny Price—is
winningly-engaging stage musicals of the year thus far
Broadway-quality FIDDLER is a definite must-not-miss production—and a very timely one considering where our world currently stands
Seeing Alexander as Tevye feels like a long-overdue gift to us musical theater geeks
The ideally-cast Alexander—clearly tailor-made to embody this role—is just absolutely perfect as the poor
overworked milkman raising his family while trying all he can muster to navigate the challenges of tradition
and changing societal norms that come with life in Anatevka
a small rural village in Czarist-ruled Imperial Russia
From his first walk-out to introduce himself and his village's customs in the awesome opening of "Tradition," to his final
Alexander set the tone for what would become one of his best stage performances to date
entertaining highlight that snowballs into a continuously entertaining evening overall
He really looks like he's having a ball up there
It's hard to believe while witnessing his full-bodied
expressive performance that Alexander has never played the role in a full production until now
given just how well he encapsulates this iconic character—one who is deeply rooted in the traditions of his Jewish faith
but whose values are consistently challenged at every turn
especially as his three eldest daughters (of five!) dare to marry for love rather than follow the traditional matchmaking process that have been the bedrock of their culture
definitive Tevye that effortlessly straddles humor
and volatility—a performance that can arguably stand proudly alongside the many memorable portraits of the role we have seen throughout the years (including Topol's rendition
the first person I ever saw as Tevye both in the 1971 film adaptation and in the national tour that stopped in the OC)
FIDDLER ON THE ROOF focuses on Tevye's inner conflict as he struggles to balance his love for his daughters with his devotion to cultural and religious traditions—the very fabric of who they are as a people
As we see his Tevye slowly reconsider his views on family and faith as each of his daughters' choice of a husband becomes progressively more unconventional
Alexander provides beautifully nuanced doses of both humor and heartbreak—sometimes even within the same scene
The audience will certainly enjoy watching his Tevye basically confront the limitations and relevance of these long-held traditions… sometimes with humor
And on top of all that drama and tumult at home
Alexander's character also has to deal with the ever-changing landscape of his evolving environment
imminent danger seems to be on the horizon for him and his neighbors
Reflecting real-life historical events from a century ago
the village of Anatevka similarly faces growing anti-Semitic pressure from the Russian government
which ultimately forces this Jewish community to leave their homes
Alexander may be best known for his comedic roles
the actor shows his impressive versatility
There is certainly a palpable musical theater skill set at play here
making this production all the more enjoyable—evidenced by not only Alexander's terrific solo monologues
but also in his vibrant interactions with his ensemble co-stars
To their collective credit, the large assembled company for this production is a stellar one, elevated further by their gorgeous renditions of the show's classic songs—crafted by composer Jerry Bock and lyricist Sheldon Harnick—that are performed under the sweeping baton of musical director Alby Potts
who conducts a glorious-sounding large multi-piece orchestra that sounds absolutely amazing
Hearing this score in its full brilliance once again brings me so much joy
By the time the entire phenomenal cast sings "Sunrise
Two of my favorite numbers in the show "Matchmaker
Matchmaker" and "Do You Love Me?" involve these four ladies
and they definitely made the songs quite memorable
the advanced-age village matchmaker and general busy-body who seems to know everyone's business and becomes understandably (and hilariously) upset when her usefulness becomes obsolete amongst Tevye's daughters
Also worth an individual shout-out: Gwen Hollander as the green-tinted ghost of Lazar Wolf's first wife Fruma-Sarah (her "height" definitely gives "Defying Gravity" vibes)
and Michael James—a frequent familiar face on this La Mirada stage—who stands out during a tavern scene when he holds out a high note for what seems like a ridiculous eternity (heck yeah
making everything feel authentic to the period
This sublime production of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF's tricky balancing act of retro revitalization is, of course, best displayed in hearing the still-resonant words in the show's book written by Joseph Stein, which takes its basis from old stories by Sholom Aleichem
The delivery may now feel like it has gone through a sitcom writers' room
but the impact and meanings remain the same as they did back in its original run 60 years ago
the show's significance today remains shockingly still familiar
especially given its parallels to events that have transpired just in the past few weeks right before the show's opening night
that the show remains a vividly-realized example of what it still feels like to be considered an "other" by a larger populous who would prefer them to just disappear
FIDDLER ON THE ROOF is a rarity… one of a handful of stage musicals that actually addresses the shocking violence and aftermaths of actual prejudicial behavior
Its real-world parallels of recent days—where incidents of violence and so-called modern day versions of pogroms against Jewish people in Europe have alarmingly increased since last week's US election—makes watching the pogroms depicted here that took place more than 100 years ago seem frighteningly prescient
the title metaphor of a fiddler trying to balance himself on a rooftop while playing a beautiful melody represents the precarious balance the characters—and
us—must strike between holding onto the past and also embracing change… making this musical a timeless exploration of family
You can even see this emphasized in Robbins' mesmerizing original choreography—where movements mirror the balance-seeking tension between grounding oneself in tradition and adapting to new realities
That inherent timelessness is why FIDDLER ON THE ROOF—especially this excellent revived production in La Mirada—still holds up today
The reason it remains a timeless classic is because it captures the universal human experience of change
the struggle of a people to preserve their heritage
and the resilience needed to face uncertain futures
The musical reminds today's audiences of the value of tradition
yet it also underscores and champions the necessity of adaptability for forward progress
making it as relevant today as it was when it was first performed
But its brilliance also stems from its ability to take a specific cultural experience—the lives of Jewish villagers in the very early 1900's facing oppression and displacement in Czar-ruled Russia—and make it universally relatable to all
The experiences of Tevye's family mirror challenges faced by all kinds of families everywhere
regardless of ethnic origins or socio-economic background: generational conflict
By focusing on relatable emotional struggles
FIDDLER ON THE ROOF transcends its specific setting
allowing audiences from diverse backgrounds to connect with the characters' journeys and to empathize with their struggles
This is why the story is particularly resonant with immigrant communities who continually feel "othered"—even to this day
especially through the lens of humor and warmth
set a new standard for representation on Broadway
paving the way for other musicals that depict specific cultural experiences such as IN THE HEIGHTS
FIDDLER ON THE ROOF continues to be an appealing
the show can hold on proudly to its storied legacy and its revered space in the world of musical theater
And for this long-time fan of Alexander's version of Tevye

Print 1 “Am I still capable of this?”
Jason Alexander has been asking himself this very question while preparing to star in “Fiddler on the Roof” at La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts — his first stage musical role in decades.
“I’m 65 years old, playing a character that, if you crunch the math, should be about 40,” he told The Times of taking on Tevye, the show’s devout dairyman. “It’s exponentially harder for me now. I can’t dance the way I used to and my best scampering days may be behind me. I’ve had to assess whether or not I could realistically convey this character’s energy and vitality, and really do the role justice.”

This “Fiddler” staging is a return to its original form at Alexander’s request, albeit a costly one. “I love the piece so much, and I wanted the full flavor bouquet of what was intended, and I was concerned that anybody who said they wanted to do it was going to do it on the cheap,” he said.
Entertainment & Arts
The stage play about the comedian’s life and career is having its world premiere at Costa Mesa’s South Coast Repertory through Nov. 24.
For example, “It’s so hard these days with the economics of theater to get a large company of actors onstage, but I knew that if you tried to do this with less than, say, 30 people, you can’t fill out the stage enough to present a community. But our producers are wonderful, they’ve said yes to everything we’ve asked for.”
While the production is one of the most expensive shows ever staged at La Mirada Theatre, it is also the fastest in the theater’s history to break even and begin turning a profit. It boosted season subscriptions 22% to a new high, and set a new record for a single day’s ticket sales. Altogether, an estimated 29,000 people will attend the production, with 21% of ticket buyers being first-time patrons.
But the production — and its profits — are possible only because of the theater’s unique business model: La Mirada Theatre is the rare regional theater that’s municipally owned and operated, with the city of La Mirada commissioning the initial transformation of an obsolete movie house and continuing to pay its ongoing production costs, thanks to taxes, ticket sales and additional revenue streams like venue rentals.
Jason Alexander, far right, and the cast of “Fiddler on the Roof.” (Jason Niedle)
“In addition to paying for the venue itself and the entire staff, the city also provides funding for everything in the theater — the actors, the royalties, the musicians in the pit, the props they’re carrying, the microphones on their heads, down to the flowers in the lobby and the ticket stock you’re holding,” explained producing artistic director BT McNicholl.
“Of course, we do have people who donate, but that’s not the bulk of the support,” he continued. With no board of directors to please or annual donor gala to host, it allows you to really focus on the patrons, McNicholl said. “Ultimately, this is the city saying the arts is a public service, and it’s enriching not just the city of La Mirada and its residents but all those in the surrounding Southern California cities that we’re serving as well.”
Independent Opera’s “The Stone Guest” is revelatory
Opera’s “Romeo and Juliet” is exhilarating and Pacific Opera Project’s super-rare production of “Don Bucefalo” proves a nutty delight
McCoy Rigby Entertainment — which repeatedly brought Cathy Rigby and “Peter Pan” to Broadway and on the road
and is transferring a “Mystic Pizza” musical to New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse next year — has been hired to stage La Mirada Theatre’s seasons for 31 years and counting
“There’s no having to raise 50% or 60% of our nut through donations and corporate sponsorships,” said executive producer Tom McCoy
“It’s such a gift to those of us who love the theater — my God
it’s the difference between life and death,” said Alexander of the theater’s operations
and the base of financial support to sustain it dried up
the community is willing to sign the deficit check
‘We don’t expect you to end the season in profit
just serve the community and make sure they feel like their tax dollars have gone to something worthwhile,’” Alexander said
“I wish that communities everywhere had the benefit of this kind of a funding model
I’m sure it would pay benefits back to the community in triplicate
especially in the areas around the country that are generally underserved in the arts.”

McCoy told The Times that he’s requested production rights to “Fiddler” for a possible sixth Broadway revival. But that transfer is not necessarily Alexander’s goal. In fact, he hopes his turn as Tevye is a reminder to other actors to prioritize productions beyond the Great White Way, or even the immediate city of L.A.

“Great Gold Bird,” a theatrical mystery that touches on love and grief
turns audience members into participants who must travel from Arlington Heights to Los Feliz
“I will tell you: My manager was not excited about the idea of me doing this role in La Mirada,” he said
‘Why are you doing this in La Mirada?’ And I said
“To be on Broadway and have a Broadway audience
that’s very exciting — as far as the commercial theater in America goes
“But there are audiences that can never get to New York; there are audiences that can’t get to Los Angeles
The idea that they are any less deserving than any other audience
