The owner of La Quinta’s first food truck park says the endeavor is a major success
but the project is running on borrowed time
the park may have to stop operations."We did get a temporary use permit for 18 months for La Quinta Landing," said Newman
where families gather to enjoy lunch in the sun
they've already facilitated over 5,000 customers," explained Newman
the owner and operator of Birrieria Sinaloa says his truck has become a popular fixture in the village
Our customers are really happy.”Newman has owned Pedego Electric Bikes in La Quinta for ten years
along with the food truck operators all say the project has been a major success
without competing with the businesses that currently operate downtown."The city has has an ordinance against food trucks
which they were willing to do a temporary use permit for me to be able to prove that this concept is successful," said Newman
"And so we're at that point now where I think we've exceeded what they wanted
It's way bigger than I ever thought it would be
We have different customers here than the restaurants do
but the customers will wander into town and spend money in the Village after visiting the food trucks
the owner of Aldo’s Mexican Food truck agrees
“A lot of families eat from here too," said Avalos
"And we're getting known out here with the whole community
and we're really appreciative about that.” But as the end of the temporary use permit draws near
Newman is hoping to make the food truck park a permanent fixture
"I'm at a point now where I'm willing to spend a lot more money and invest a lot more time and really do the project to the level of which it deserves
and we're just in the process of getting all that stuff done now,” said Newman."We're trying to get the community to be on our side
because people really like us here," said Gastelum
"So we don't want this to end in September. However
waiting to know the fate of the food truck park which remains in the hands of the city
"We all know that temporary means temporary
"So we didn't over extend our budget to getting too crazy by spending money on something that could very well not last
Newman says he has huge pans for the property in the future including live music
movie nights– and later night bites."We know there's a demand for live music
We know there's a demand for the village to maybe have a place that stays open a tad bit later
"So we look forward to the future of not only having just food trucks
but having an actual area for the community to meet
and just kind of a community hub where people can meet and bring families and dogs and strollers and babies and ride bikes

It’s where Ginger Rogers held her fourth wedding

Biking is a popular past time in La Quinta - there's so much to see and do in Old Town and beyond

If you enjoy hiking, trek out to the trailhead of Cove to Lake Trail
I highly recommend an early morning hike – this trail is entirely exposed to the sun

— In a move to address the ongoing housing crisis in Palm Beach County
commissioners approved a plan on Tuesday to convert the La Quinta hotel on Okeechobee Boulevard into permanent housing for seniors and veterans aged 55 and older
WPTV's Joel Lopez dug into the details of this initiative
clarifying that the La Quinta will not serve as a homeless shelter
WATCH: In-depth look into how La Quinta Inn will be converted into housing for seniors
it aims to prevent homelessness among a vulnerable population—seniors and veterans who may be facing eviction or financial hardship
The facility will offer 114 rooms of housing
ensuring that those who have served our country and the elderly have a safe and stable environment
This decision comes after extensive debate and some pushback from neighboring residents
who have voiced concerns about safety and the nature of the project
Residents expressed worries about potential safety issues with incoming residents
there needs to be an issue resolved for the homeless
"There's still going to be a bleedover into the community of Century Village."
Concerns over the impact on the Century Village community were echoed by others
who fear that the project could be detrimental to their hard-earned quality of life
"We're also seniors and we work hard for what we have
it's going to be detrimental to Century Village," said Louis Perez
the county officials assured that all housing applicants would undergo background checks and screenings
Only Palm Beach County residents will be allowed to apply and county staff is working to finalize the details on how long you need to have lived in the county to qualify
the facility will be staffed with two security guards on-site 24/7 to ensure safety and security for all residents
this is for folks that may be losing the housing
they're in because of cost," said Mayor Maria Marino
According to the Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County
nearly 330 seniors over the age of 60 faced eviction last year
This initiative not only provides immediate accommodation but also serves as a lifeline to those who may otherwise find themselves homeless
Commissioner Marci Woodward pointed out that "these are people who are facing losing their current living situation and moving to the streets or living in their car," highlighting the urgency of this housing solution
The La Quinta rooms average 366 square feet
Residents will undergo annual reassessments to ensure affordability
The total investment for the conversion project is pegged at approximately $20.6 million
County staff noted that constructing a new facility would exceed an additional $10 million
without factoring in the elusive cost of finding and purchasing suitable land.Additionally
a new construction project could take 3 to 4 years to complete
making the La Quinta renovation a faster option for addressing pressing needs
Nearly 30% of Palm Beach County's population comprising seniors—many on fixed incomes struggling with the rising costs of living
The current economic climate has seen a 20% increase in homeowner insurance from 2021 to 2023
further straining the budgets of many seniors
Recent Point in Time data reveals there are 121 homeless veterans in the county
and the local government is committed to partnering with organizations to ensure effective operations at the new La Quinta initiative
Despite support from several commissioners
a long-time advocate for housing solutions
expressed opposition to converting a motel into housing for veterans and seniors
That's not what you do for our veterans and that's not what you do for our seniors
advocating instead for the construction of mini-cottages in industrial areas
County staff is also evaluating similar projects
including the potential conversion of a Ramada hotel off Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard
emphasizing the need for ongoing solutions in the housing sector
Staff also mentioned there are 5 to 6 other local hotels that are being considered to assist with the need for housing
The 114-rooms will be converted into 370-square-foot efficiencies
The project received the minimum needed for approval as a supermajority
that was required to purchase the hotel on Okeechobee Boulevard near Florida's Turnpike
Even the commissioners who supported the purchase had concerns over the cost and the requirement that the county will pay the hotel owner's franchise fee of $2 million
But the need for such housing to prevent veterans and seniors from becoming homeless outweighed those issues for the five commissioners who supported the purchase
Century Village residents urged that another location be found
saying they supported the goals of the project but that they were concerned about the effect it would have on their property values
They also said they were worried about the low-income residents affecting their community of more than 10,000
The county staff assured county commissioners that the tenants would be carefully screened to ensure successful placements
They would all undergo criminal background checks and the 24-hour security on site would make the hotel safer than it currently is
They also assured Century Village residents that they would meet monthly with them to obtain input from them as to any negative impacts
The first tenants are expected to move into the hotel within six months
This is a developing story. Check back to www.PalmBeachPost.com for updates

The crash happened at approximately 12:40 a.m
they discovered a vehicle inside the building
authorities determined the driver was not under the influence
When News Channel 3 arrived on scene the vehicle had been pulled out of the building and the business was closed
Tuesday's clash of the undefeated DEL softball titans between La Quinta and Shadow Hills was the game everyone's been waiting for
and it only took one batter for the Blackhawks to set the tone
La Quinta's Victoria Guzman slapped a roller down the line and the Knights' third baseman hurried her throw and sailed it over the first baseman's head
As the ball rolled into the right field corner
Guzman sped around the bases for a run and a 1-0 lead
The Knights made a few nervy errors and La Quinta was there to capitalize every time
The end result was a 5-0 win for the Blackhawks who drew first blood in the first of three games between the league's elite teams
"It was a very exciting game and there was a lot leading up to it and I was so proud of my team and I think everyone showed all their capabilities," said La Quinta starting pitcher Abbygail Varela
"This is all we've been practicing for so it just feels great to come out with the win
It was nerve-wracking but kept reminding myself to take deep breaths and have faith in myself."
La Quinta not only avoided the mistakes that plagued Shadow Hills in this one but made a handful of highlight-reel defensive plays to keep the Knights off the board
Varela finished with 10 strikeouts and yielded four hits
and importantly did not walk a batter in the win
She made a pair of great defensive plays herself
snaring a line drive and turning it into a double play and later stabbing another comebacker for a big out
Her teammates came through with solid defense all night including two defensive gems in particular to stymie potential Knights' rallies
a double by Annabelle Alvarez and an error put runners on first and third with two outs and Shadow Hills trailing 3-0
Amariah Rodriguez hit a long fly ball down the line in right field tailing into foul ground when La Quinta's Analia Jacobo made a long
Then the play of the game was turned in by La Quinta shortstop Valeria Balbuena in the top of the sixth with the game still in doubt
The Knights got a leadoff single from Samantha Perez and Shadow Hills star Nevaeh Walls ripped a ball up the middle
snagged the ball and got up and beat Perez to second base for a huge out
Varela then struck out the next two batters to end the inning
La Quinta added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth thanks to two more Shadow Hills errors and a sharp RBI single by Yahaira Figueroa
Varela struck out two more in the seventh and that was it
"Something that our team has spoken about all year is 'Leave it all on the field
no regrets,' and it truly showed up tonight," said La Quinta coach Brianna Luna
"Those diving plays are an example of that
and they made those plays when it counted the most."
Balbuena and Jacobo were also key parts of La Quinta's offense
a stolen base and scored two of the team's five runs
Shadow Hills entered the game with a 14-2 record and 8-0 in league play
and La Quinta was 15-2-1 and 7-0 in the DEL
who were led offensively by Alvarez with a single and a double off of Varela
Pitcher Ava Valenzuela pitched well in the loss
striking out seven and only yielding five hits
The Blackhawks understand there is still work to do with two more games against the Knights
The two teams will meet again Friday at Shadow Hills and then conclude the season against each other on May 6 at La Quinta
"It was very important to win the first one
and I think it sort of like sets the mood for the rest of the games," Varela said
but we have a positive vibe going into them."
but she likes the make-up of this year's Blackhawks squad
but I think we're a pretty scrappy bunch," Luna said
and tonight I really loved our energy on the field and in the dugout
We were very hype and I thought that propelled us through every single inning."

The 114 rooms will be converted into 370-square-foot efficiencies
The project received the minimum number of votes needed for approval
since a supermajority was required to purchase the hotel on Okeechobee Boulevard near Florida's Turnpike
Commissioners Maria Sachs and Sara Baxter voted against the project
agreeing with Century Village residents that the hotel conversion should occur elsewhere
Even the commissioners who supported the purchase had concerns over the purchase price for a 37-year-old hotel and the demand by the hotel owner that the county pay the franchise fee of $1.8 million
The county will have to pay another $3.8 million to renovate the facility to meet county standards
In order to live in the renovated La Quinta
The bottom line is that the final cost will be $20.6 million
which breaks out to an investment of $180,719 for each of the 114
is nearly 20% over the appraised value of $14 million
"Would any of you pay $180,000 for a 370-square foot efficiency?" one Century Village resident asked commissioners
an umbrella group that represents Century Village building associations
said the county could pay $5,000 a month for 36 months to house someone facing homelessness in a nice hotel
That would come out to the $180,000 the county expects to spend on each of the units at La Quinta
Tenants will be asked to pay part of their income toward rent but even with those funds and Veterans Administration assistance
it is not expected to cover annual costs of $2.5 million
The county expects a deficit of nearly $1 million
Century Village: Residents give resounding 'boos!' to county's La Quinta senior housing plan near West Palm
Monthly rents for extremely low-income residents would be $564; fair market rent for efficiencies in the county are $1,550
Speakers who supported the project noted that low-income seniors and veterans cannot afford to pay that fair market rent
Many of them are facing the prospect of being homeless
Joel Flores could not understand why the county was agreeing to pay the hotel owner's franchise fee to La Quinta
Assistant County Administrator Isami Ayala-Collazo said the owner had insisted it be paid or else he would not sell to the county
The decision to approve that part of the transaction was made before Flores took office in November
Ayala-Collazo said it would cost more to build a new facility to accommodate seniors and veterans who need housing and it could take more than three years before it could open
a majority of the commission concluded the need for housing to prevent veterans and seniors from becoming homeless outweighed the costs of buying the hotel
County Mayor Maria Marino noted that the purchase will generate adequate housing for seniors and veterans almost immediately
There is a critical need for this type of housing
County housing officials reiterated that no one living on the street will be eligible to live in the facility
tenants will have to be a county resident for at least 12 months before they could move into the renovated hotel
Up to 50% of the rooms will be set aside for veterans
whose district includes the La Quinta and Century Village
said it was a difficult decision to support the project in light of the opposition from Century Village
He called on the county staff to work closely with Century Village to minimize any negative impacts
said she was now convinced that the project should move forward
this is an alternative for people sleeping on the streets or living in a shelter
adding that the tenants will have to contribute something toward rent
The county staff assured commissioners that the tenants would be screened to ensure successful placements
Century Village residents have complained there is rampant drug activity outside the hotel
Flores said the project will do Century Village a favor by addressing that illegal drug activity as on-site security can monitor the situation
Tenants who misbehave or are involved in any criminal activity will be quickly removed
The staff assured Century Village residents that county officials will meet monthly with Century Village residents to obtain input from them if there are negative effects
In response to the recent decision by the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners to purchase the La Quinta Inn for conversion into supportive housing

A man who gunned down his estranged wife as she slept at a mobile home in La Quinta because he was inflamed over notions she was having affairs with other men was convicted Thursday of first-degree murder
A jury deliberated roughly two days before finding Jose Valles Meza of La Quinta guilty in the slaying of Patricia Cesena
the jury convicted Meza of the murder count
a special-circumstance allegation of lying in wait and sentence-enhancing gun and great bodily injury allegations
Riverside County Superior Court Judge James Hawkins scheduled a sentencing hearing for April 28 at the Larson Justice Center
who is now 34 and is being held without bail at the Benoit Detention Center
is slated to receive life in prison without the possibility of parole
killed Cesena in the Dune Palms Mobile Estates at 46400 Dune Palms Road in the predawn hours of Jan
obsessed with the idea she was seeing other men
While his and his estranged wife's four kids slept
Meza fired into the home through a bedroom window
where he was pulled over by a California Highway Patrol officer on suspicion of speeding and drunken driving
Meza blurted out that he had “witnessed a murder,” according to CHP Officer Michael Bernardino
the officer was able to ascertain where the shooting had occurred
and deputies were sent to the mobile home in La Quinta to conduct a welfare check shortly before 6 a.m.
Investigator Martin Alfaro of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department testified during Meza's 2020 preliminary hearing that Cesena was discovered dead from a single gunshot to the head
Her kids were still sleeping when deputies entered the residence
Investigator Armando Munoz testified that one of the kids
told detectives that her parents often fought and that cameras had been placed throughout the home so her father could spy on Cesena
believing he might catch her in an act of infidelity
Meza had no documented prior felony convictions in Riverside County

La Quinta dominated most of the track events
while Shadow Hills won most of the field events
La Quinta's cross country champions Luis-Fernando Martinez and Saveyra Guerrero each won the 3,200 and 1,600 meters
and Shadow Hills' Nate Williams won the boys' high jump and long jump

Hinchen said that they weren't his best times and that he didn't push himself too hard on Thursday
is to get to 10.7 in the 100 and 21.7 in the 200
"The whole reason I'm out here is to get faster for football," Hinchen said
I'm just working toward my goals and trying to improve my times by the end of the season."

Officials from La Quinta and the Coachella Valley Unified School District say they had a "productive and beneficial" meeting about the reallocation of city tax dollars to address the district’s budget deficit
The meeting came after the La Quinta City Council sent a letter on Feb
11 to the district raising concerns about the reallocation
also aimed to maintain a strong working relationship with CVUSD
stay updated on district developments and explore ways the city can support its goals and programs
The school district approved three resolutions in December to transfer property tax proceeds from former redevelopment agencies — now managed by successor agencies — in Coachella
La Quinta and Riverside County from the district’s Fund 40 Special Reserve Fund for Capital Projects into its general fund as part of its fiscal stabilization plan
School districts then allocate those funds for facility improvements
as they must maintain 3% of their total budget for building upkeep
especially if they try to maximize voter-approved bonds through the state's matching grants
"While there are very few students at CVUSD who reside in La Quinta
the geographic territory and tax dollars are significant in comparison
those funds have supported very few students with no capital development to support them," the letter said
"Taxes are intended to support students who reside in the City of La Quinta as part of the District."
said that by the end of the rescheduled meeting on Feb
both parties had a clear understanding of each other's perspectives
where the city's finance department dug into the data from the county's controller's office to show CVUSD the revenue generated from La Quinta taxpayers
Millen said that CVUSD views the revenue as general property tax income
he believes there is now a clearer understanding of how tax revenues are generated and where they go
Superintendent Frances Esparza also said the meeting went well
as the city wanted to know if the district was using its local control funding formula — a combination of state general funds and local property taxes — to support its fiscal stabilization plan
The district clarified that the redevelopment account funds are “strictly being used to support the restricted routine maintenance account,” which supports regular maintenance and repairs of school buildings
McMillen also said the city gained a better understanding of CVUSD's plan moving forward and the reasons behind the district's budget shortfall
He said that the district acknowledged that the school board president has taken full responsibility for the district's current position
has publicly and repeatedly expressed this sentiment at recent school board meetings
"I would say that's really their story to tell
but it was a very good meeting," McMillen said
adding that there's a commitment to meet with the district again in three months
The city regularly meets with various public agencies throughout the year
the city had gone many years without meeting with the school district and only resumed those meetings about a year
"A lot of the reasoning behind (requesting the meeting) is
we're getting asked questions from community members and residents and they're wanting to know what's going on," McMillen said
"I think it's really important for everybody to have a network of understanding
We're all working for the same goal of providing safe and quality education for all students and residents

PALM DESERT – Although she finished first in every Desert Valley League cross country race she ever entered
this was only the second time La Quinta High School senior Megan Huebner was part of a DVL championship team
The La Quinta girls’ cross country team made official Wednesday what nearly everyone thought to be a foregone conclusion
winning the DVL for the first time in three years and taking the top two spots in the race with Huebner’s 17:51
which was good enough for second place — the first time she has finished that high all year
PHOTOS:DVL Cross Country Meet
“This was a great way to end my senior season
The weather’s beautiful and the course was a lot faster this way,” Huebner said
We really came together and worked together well and made it happen.”
The course at Xavier Prep High School was changed for Wednesday’s meet
eliminating the most difficult terrain — soft sand
The rest of the top five consisted of two runners from Xavier Prep — Valeria Ruiz (18:35
fifth) — and Kat-ya Avendano of Coachella Valley (18:57
Avendano will be the only runner advancing to the postseason as an individual as the Arabs did not advance as a squad
Xavier Prep was an uncontested second with three second-place finishes
Indio finished third with 11 points and Palm Desert fourth with 12 points
just two points ahead of Palm Springs and Coachella Valley
both of which tied for fifth with 14 points
The top four teams in the league advance to the postseason
Avendano’s strong showing gave the Arabs a fighting chance at a playoff berth
but a 10th-place finish by Gloria Clavache (20:02) for Palm Desert and a 17th-place finish by her twin sister Silvia Clavache staved off the threat for the Aztecs
It marks the second time in as many years that the Palm Desert girls have advanced to the postseason after a dry spell that began in 2004
Now our goal is to get further as a team in the postseason
We’ve never gotten to round two as a team,” La Quinta head coach Joann Monachello-Prahl said
City leaders met Tuesday night to address growing concerns over La Quinta’s electrical capacity
as substations serving the area are at or near their limits
The discussion comes amid rising energy demand and stalled efforts to expand infrastructure
which provides electricity to La Quinta and other parts of the Coachella Valley
follows a “growth pays for growth” policy—requiring developers to cover the cost of new power infrastructure
Upgrades are estimated at $20 million per 50-megawatt increase
City officials had been working on a cost-sharing agreement with IID and developers to expand the Avenue 58 substation
but IID recently withdrew its support for the project
the agency proposed two new substations east of La Quinta
a long-term solution that could take up to 20 years to complete
Residents have voiced concerns about the city’s energy capacity
ranking it their top priority in a recent community workshop
Factors like state electrification mandates and increased electric vehicle use have further strained the system
La Quinta city council members discussed this topic in a study session during the meeting
The purpose of the session was to provide guidance and feedback
Officials reaffirmed their commitment to finding a cost-sharing plan that balances growth and affordability
Residents with concerns about energy and future upgrades are encouraged to contact IID directly
