ANAHEIM, Calif. — It made sense to think Pavel Mintyukov would become The One on the Ducks’ blue line
He burst onto the scene in 2023-24 as a rookie
moments of physical one-on-one defensive play and scratching the surface of his offensive upside
It also made sense to think Olen Zellweger would become The One
with the ability to carry the puck out of his zone and move along the blue line to find shooting lanes
He’s got a knack for getting his shot through to the net and has the puck-moving skills to run a power play
Each player also won the best defenseman award in his respective junior leagues in 2023
with Zellweger edging out Mintyukov and Tristan Luneau — another highly talented projected Ducks blueliner — for the top defenseman award in Canadian major junior hockey
it was easy to see a future in which Mintyukov or Zellweger started to nudge aside longtime veteran Cam Fowler as the one the Ducks rode in important situations
and all the responsibility that comes with it
LaCombe’s rise has been meteoric in his second season
He has 14 goals — the most by an Anaheim blueliner since Lubomir Visnovsky had a team-record 18 in 2010-11 — and 43 points
which would be higher if the Ducks didn’t ice the NHL’s worst power play
After ranking fourth among their defensemen in ice time as a rookie (19:23)
LaCombe plays more than any other skater on the team (22:09)
“Jacks always had it,” said fellow defenseman Drew Helleson
who has known his fellow Minnesota native since they were grade-school age
“It was just a matter of time until he kind of grew into his own and was able to showcase what he could do
“You watch him in college and before he got here
Just waiting for him to get the confidence to make some plays
Now he’s got it and now you can see what it’s doing for him and what it does for us
Jackson LaCombe, who has emerged on the @AnaheimDucks blue line this season
is a candidate to join Team USA at the upcoming Men’s Worlds
His skating would be an asset on the big sheet

he showed flashes of his potential as a smooth-skating offensive contributor
but many more instances of tentative playmaking while also learning how to defend at the NHL level and overcoming mistakes made after skipping past the minor leagues
LaCombe also had to deal with losing regularly on a 27-50-5 club after four successful years at the University of Minnesota
And confidence — along with the lack of it — can be more important than ability for a young player in development mode
I was kind of a little bit standoffish and a little bit afraid in some moments,” LaCombe said
“And I think now I’m just kind of just being myself
Just me being the player that I am is just contributing to my confidence
And I think my game is obviously evolved a lot from college
Just being able to kind of contribute in all areas of the ice has been huge for me
and it’s just been helping me build my confidence.”
LaCombe played a personal-best 31:04 in a shootout win over the San Jose Sharks
It isn’t uncommon for him to log between 23 and 28 minutes
and he hasn’t played fewer than 20 in a game since early January
His effectiveness with regular partner Radko Gudas has been on the wane
as he’s been on the ice for 20 goals against in all situations over the last 10 games
But LaCombe’s play driving and offense generation in five-on-five play is markedly better year over year (43.6 to 48.9 CF%; 45.51 to 48.86 xGF%)
There are the numbers that measure his improvement
“He just allows me to play my game and be myself,” LaCombe said of Gudas
“That’s kind of what I needed to hear and needed to do
For him just to be there has been huge for me
he’s a tremendous guy and such a good player
Just being able to learn from him every day and have a leader like that to play with has been great.”
The presence of Helleson has also had a positive effect
LaCombe and Helleson played on summer teams as youths in Minnesota and were united at prep power Shattuck St
Mary’s for two years before Helleson left to play in the United States National Team Development Program
But after Helleson went to play at Boston College and LaCombe stayed home at Minnesota
they were back together with Trevor Zegras for the United States’ gold medal-winning 2021 World Juniors squad
They reunited when the Ducks acquired Helleson from the Colorado Avalanche in a 2022 trade that sent away longtime defenseman Josh Manson
and Zegras said that’s enhanced the comfort level that LaCombe now feels
“Playing 82 games versus the best players in the world
I guess when you have that comfortability on the days in between
“I don’t know if me being here has anything to do with that,” Helleson said
It was just a matter of time for him to show it.”
coach Greg Cronin sought out Golden Gophers coach Bob Motzko to get a feel for how LaCombe might advance as a player after going through the peaks and valleys of his first season
Motzko convinced Cronin that it takes LaCombe a bit of time to be secure and assured with his game and the atmosphere he’s in
wait “for all that talent to bust through.”
“He had the same experience with Jackson his freshmen year at Minnesota,” Cronin said
‘You will see a different player this year.’”
LaCombe attacked the weight room and strengthened his 6-foot-2
He also spent a week training with Brazilian jiu-jitsu instructor Jeremy Clark to build more combative instincts into his game
“He did some things that were kind of out-of-the-box stuff
which I had talked to Jackson about in terms of exploring boxing or some mixed martial arts to get a real intimate view of a human’s response to competitiveness,” Cronin said
LaCombe’s on-ice transformation began with a terrific training camp
But an illness at the start of the season sapped his momentum
LaCombe didn’t play until the season’s fifth game but even as he made up ground in the first two months
as the Ducks had Fowler returning from injury and needed him in the lineup to showcase for a trade
and he had a goal and assist in consecutive contests to start a 16-game stretch in which he scored four goals and had 14 points
opening the door for LaCombe to rush through
“His biggest thing was the trust in his own abilities,” Gudas said
“And I thought this year he showed up in the camp
he showed all his potential where it is right now
he was playing and trying to do his things
He got on the wrong end of it a few times and I think he learned from his mistakes
He got healthy scratched a few times early in the season
Worked on the confidence and worked on the things that he’s great at.”
I’ve still been checking in on the guys and watching some of their games and I know he’s had a great season
I think there’s a lot more to come from Jacks
I think he’s destined for great things and I’m happy that he’s having some success there.”
When the Ducks drafted LaCombe in the second round in 2019
they knew he’d be a bit of a long-term project
as a forward who converted to defense while at Shattuck
As they saw him stand out on the talent-laden Golden Gophers
where he played above Brock Faber and had Matthew Knies
Logan Cooley and Jimmy Snuggerud as teammates
they remained convinced that he’d find success in the NHL
and that’s a piece they’ll need in their build-up toward being a playoff team
They’ve had players such as Fowler and Hampus Lindholm capably perform in that role — at a very high level during their most recent contention period — but they haven’t had a dominant blueliner since Scott Niedermayer and Chris Pronger
That is still uncharted territory for LaCombe and he must fend off competition within his own team to be The One
But he is opening eyes across the league by the day
“I always knew he was going to be this good,” Helleson said

Augustine Catholic Parish and Student Center at the University of Miami has been a sanctuary for students seeking solace
and community helping students make the best of their college experience.
Raymond and Doris LaCombe were dedicated professionals in the Finance industry
They lived their life to the fullest: gardening
but most importantly dedicating their life to the Catholic Church
they developed a plan to benefit those less fortunate
they implemented an estate plan that left the bulk of their wealth to charities
many of which are affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church
“The LaCombe’s would be delighted to know that University of Miami students are now benefiting from the wonderful Catholic Center on campus and will continue to do for many years to come.”
The LaCombe’s and their gift were honored during 7 p.m
February 11 at the Catholic Student Center
we gathered as a UCatholic community to celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes
to remind ourselves that holiness is not a distant ideal but our calling
and God continues to work miracles in our lives here and now
We also gave thanks for the lives of Doris and Raymond LaCombe
whose generous gift helps ensure that our mission here continues to thrive
Their legacy is a reminder that faith lived out in love bears lasting fruit
answer God’s call with courage and generosity,” states Fr Richard Vigoa
Augustine Catholic Parish and UM Catholic Center.
“The UCatholic Center was so honored to receive this gift from Raymond and Doris LaCombe
I have no doubt that they would be thrilled to witness the extraordinary impact and grace their gift will enviably have on our UM Catholic student community,” states Pat Whitely
senior vice president for student affairs and alumni engagement
“Whenever alumni and parishioners come to serve and share a meal with us at Mass and Meal
they often express what a blessing it is to see young people gathering for Mass on a Tuesday night as a community
Every time I encounter one of them and witness their generosity—whether through a gift or an act of service—I am reminded that my faith is not just a temporary experience confined to my time in school
it is a lifelong relationship that will continue to shape me far beyond these years
It’s easy to be Catholic in an environment where we pray together
But these alumni and parishioners show us that living out our faith is not only possible in the ‘real world’—it’s essential
they demonstrate that a life centered on Christ remains within reach
In a time when secular culture seems to dominate so much of society
their witness has given me hope—not just for my own future
but for the future of UCatholic as well.”
the LaCombe’s financial advisor for over 50 years leaves this touching tribute
“Ray and Doris were two of my most special friends
Both were hired as economists for First Federal Savings and Loan
so Ray would “drop in” to visit around lunch time
then park on the 6th floor of the garage and walk to the 16th floor to stay in shape
Over time we got to know each other quite well
and they requested I become their financial advisor.” The LaCombe’s leave a legacy
not only with the students at the Catholic Student Center but in the lives

A 28-hectare wildfire west of Sundre is classified as being held.
On May 3, Mountain View County said it was actively monitoring Wildfire RWF030
which is in the Forest Protection Area (FPA) west of Sundre
They said the fire was approximately 40 hectares in size.
Mountain View County noted in its release Saturday that the wildfire is under the jurisdiction of Alberta Forestry.
"Resources from the Town of Sundre and Clearwater County are currently assisting with suppression efforts
Provincial air and ground resources have also been deployed to support the response," they said.
2025 there have been 30 wildfires in the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area
Alberta Wildfire says that the wildfire danger is still currently high in the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area
While cooler temperatures are present today
persistent winds continue to elevate the wildfire risk.
"Some precipitation passed through the region overnight
but it was not enough to reduce the wildfire danger
and more is needed to significantly lower the risk," they said on May 4.
"Dead and dry vegetation remains a major concern
as it is highly flammable and provides an easily available fuel source for wildfires."

"Since the facility is in an urban municipality
the County looks at the Village of Alix’s contribution as a guideline for the County’s support. The Village has committed $3,000 toward the project. Given previous projects
the County would also typically provide $3,000 toward the project," Manager of Corporate Services
Council has increased its commitment when the urban municipality increased its contribution. Administration is supportive of Council approving an additional funding allotment of $2,500 if the Village of Alix were to also increase its commitment from $3,000 to $5,500."
The Association itself is providing more than 15 per cent of the funding toward the project
The Alix Wagon Wheel Museum contains a number of artifacts and archival print materials

the County will ensure that its citizens have access to quality recreation and cultural facilities and programs through partnerships and by providing financial support to organizations for Capital Support (RC(1)) and Operating Support (RC(2))."
After decades of rumours around what could be buried under the the PNE grounds
the truth is finally surfacing – literally
during construction of the new Freedom Mobile Arch amphitheatre at Hastings Park at the Pacific National Exhibition grounds in Vancouver
crews found a captured German gun from the First World War
a number of other military artifacts were found
Seaforth Highlanders of Canada Museum curator James Calhoun said there have been rumours for years that there were German guns buried at the PNE grounds
"This subsequent find just shows that there was more stuff stored at the park and we’re likely to find it," Calhoun said Friday (May 2) from the Seaforth Armoury in Vancouver
where the historic artillery and military artifacts have been moved.
crews have found a captured German howitzer from the First World War
four captured German machine guns from the First World War
two British/Canadian nine-pounder cannons from the 1870s and the "trail" of the howitzer
Calhoun explained the captured guns were brought back to Canada as "trophies" and scattered throughout the country
was one of the first organizations to ask for more trophies.
He said there were plans for a permanent exhibit
but it never quite happened as the Depression happened
Fifteen or 16 artillery pieces were stored at Hastings Park in 1933/34 and another five were cut up for scraps.
"Our attitudes changed throughout the late ‘20s and ‘30s and we got rid of stuff."
Calhoun added a newspaper article in the 1940s said the remaining pieces were discarded in an "out of the way corner" in Hastings Park
That area used to have a ravine that was eventually filled in when the military took over the park in 1942
"We think that they pushed them all into a ravine and just buried them.”
Calhoun said it's an incredibly exciting find
He said an officer was "gobsmacked" that construction could unearth these items buried in metres of dirt
while also wondering why the items weren't taken to the Seaforth Armoury building
Put yourself in the position of somebody in World War Two
Now we're at the point that it's magical."
Calhoun said there could be as many as nine more artillery pieces buried and at least 10 machine guns
but the piece he's hoping for is a 210-millimetre Morser that used to sit at the entrance of Stanley Park
where it was the most-photographed captured gun in Vancouver.
“We think that might be buried in the ravine at the PNE
so we’re very excited about going in to look for it.”

USA; Anaheim Ducks defenseman Jackson LaCombe (2) moves the puck against Vancouver Canucks center Elias Pettersson (40) during the second period at Honda Center
Jackson LaCombe was part of the Anaheim Ducks logjam of left-handed defensemen.
After the acquisition of Jacob Trouba and before the departure of Cam Fowler
the Ducks rotated the 24-year-old LaCombe and 21-year-olds Olen Zellweger and Pavel Mintyukov
as the talented trio competed for the one available spot in the Anaheim defensive corps
not only has LaCombe freed himself from the logjam
LaCombe is one of the most productive defensemen in the entire NHL and may just be Anaheim’s best player in its surge into the playoff race
“Comes with trusting his abilities,” said Radko Gudas
Ducks captain and LaCombe’s regular defensive partner
getting all the touches he needs to feel comfort with the puck comes along with the confidence
“It’s great for our hockey team to have a guy like that
He's getting better every night and doing the right things and helping the team win in every possible situation and he's getting put out there.”

Following LaCombe’s last scratch in the line-up on Dec
he immediately put up back-to-back two-point games with a goal and an assist in both Toronto and Columbus and recorded five points in his first three games back
He is the team’s top minuteman averaging over 23 minutes a night
LaCombe is second among NHL defenseman in even strength points with 22
LaCombe has a nine points in a six-game point streak as the Ducks sit six points out of a playoff spot going into Vancouver tonight
I think I'm just playing hockey,” LaCombe said
I think it just goes hand in hand with my confidence
and I'm just not thinking I'm just kind of trying to play.”

LaCombe was seemingly tentative and unsure in his plays adjusting to the NHL level
he was a minus-24 with 17 points playing just over 19 minutes a night
“I think you saw what he was capable of last year,” Gudas said
which he brought this year and he was just growing as a player
He's using his abilities to make those plays and makes life a lot easier for me.”
LaCombe was still getting caught in-between to start this season and registered just six points in his first 20 games
but his confidence clicked in after that mid-December scratch
LaCombe has not only been the Ducks most productive defenseman but easily their most active
throwing away any hesitancy for straight ahead play
so he helps a lot (on the defensive end),” LaCombe said
just being able to break up plays early and then obviously jump on offense is huge

The former University of Minnesota Golden Gopher’s fully formed abilities have never been more extensively on display than in this current six-game point streak

The 24-year-old has executed a two-on-one break with Trevor Zegras to kick off Anaheim’s post-break scoring in Boston
and LaCombe pierced a dynamic four-on-four dagger against Vancouver last Thursday

LaCombe is just the second player in the NHL this season with a plus-five and three or more assists in the same game and just the fourth Duck all-time to do so
Saku Koivu in 2010 and Paul Kariya in 1996
His six-game point streak is the longest by a Ducks defenseman since Chris Pronger’s own six-game streak in 2008-09
Only Scott Niedermayer’s eight-game streak in the Stanley Cup 2006-07 season is longer
“His skating ability is through the roof,” Gudas said
and sometimes I feel more like a decoy than anything.
“He's just been doing great and he's getting better at his talking too
It’s been fun playing with him and see him try and see him doing better and better.”
LaCombe has gone from on the bubble to on top of the Ducks’ depth chart
earning the trust of his teammates and the Anaheim coaching staff to handle the Ducks’ biggest situations in their biggest games of the season
I just want to be prepared and whoever that is I think we're ready to go,” LaCombe said

this is not the time to divide ourselves.
and talk of separation have seemed to be at an all-time high.
not everyone takes a separatist standpoint
one of my friends who works in the House of Commons for the Conservative Party called the election bittersweet.
the election didn't result in a Conservative government
but the party made gains in some really critical areas.
This isn't the time we should divide ourselves; we need to be 'Canada Strong,' and we need to put 'Canada First.'
The way we do that is to put party politics aside and come together united as Canadians
We need to unite to make sure we stay a sovereign country
Even Pierre Poilievre said during his concession speech, "Conservatives will work with the Prime Minister and all parties with the common goal of defending Canada's interests
and getting a new trade deal that puts these tariffs behind us while protecting our sovereignty and the Canadian people."
As for Poilievre losing his seat with the party gains seen on election night
I don't see him stepping down as party leader.
My opinion is that we will most likely be seeing a by-election somewhere
where he will be elected and remain Party Leader and Leader of the Opposition in the House of Commons.
like Poilievre said during his concession speech
but we can't let the Liberal win divide us.
What we can do is watch for what our current government is doing
lobby the government by sharing our opinion with our local representatives on matters important to us
and when it comes time for another election

The province's refocusing of the health care system continued on May 1
Health Minister Adriana LaGrange introduced Bill 55
the Health Statutes Amendments Act, which addresses "outstanding policy items" in the new system.
Amendments under the bill will make changes to the Provincial Health Agencies Act
Health Information Act, and the Public Health Act.
and we are in the final stages of refocusing Alberta’s health care system
The proposed changes will help us continue to improve the health care system for all Albertans," said LaGrange in a media release accompanying the press conference
The amendments introduced will transfer several public health functions currently handled by Alberta Health Services (AHS) to Primary Care Alberta
which became a functional entity in February of this year
leaving AHS to primarily handle in-hospital patient care.
will take over front-line public health services such as communicable disease control
public health inspections and surveillance
The medical officers of health who work in the province will move to the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health
LaGrange emphasized that Albertans will see no interruptions in service while the changes are implemented
"Albertans will continue to access public health services as they always have," said LaGrange
An amendment to the Protection of Persons in Care Act will provide additional capabilities for the province to investigate allegations of abuse.
Another change being made is to the Health Information Act, which is going to allow the Ministry of Seniors
Community and Social Services further powers and confirm the ministry as custodians of health information so that it can fulfill its mandate in providing care under Assisted Living Alberta.
several sections of the Hospitals Act will be repealed as aspects of hospital management will be integrated into the Provincial Health Agencies Act
and other aspects have been deemed to be outdated and no longer relevant.
Changes under the amended legislation will also allow the new health shared services entity
a fifth agency which services and administratively supports all four new health agencies created by the province
to provide support for health foundations across all sectors and remove all references to health regions.
The amended legislation is likely to be proclaimed in the fall of 2025
It remains to be seen how critics and health sector stakeholders will respond to the new legislation

Jackson LaCombe scores his eighth goal of the season
helping seal Anaheim's 4-1 win over Tampa Bay at Honda Center
Jackson LaCombe forces overtime in Columbus with a late third-period goal
The Ducks crafted one of their best performances of the 2024-25 season tonight on home ice
rolling to a 6-2 victory over the Boston Bruins at Honda Center
NHL GAMECENTER | DUCKS STREAM
13 points back of a playoff position with 11 games still to play
highlighting a night where six of the seven Ducks to find the scoresheet were age 23-or-younger
Cutter Gauthier and Mason McTavish also scored
the first marking his 300th career NHL helper
Goaltender John Gibson earned his 11th win of the season
Gibson is now two victories shy of matching J.S
Giguere for the most in Ducks history (206)
David Pastrnak and Morgan Geekie scored for the Bruins
who fell to 30-34-9 with the club's seventh straight loss
Anaheim controlled the pace of play throughout the opening period and eventually broke through for the night's first lead with less than two minutes to go before intermission
The chance started way back in the defensive zone
as Carlsson pulled a loose puck free and skated ahead on a 2-on-1 rush with Killorn
sliding a short pass to his linemate in the neutral zone before racing up ice
Killorn then gained the blue line and feathered the return feed back to Carlsson
and through a Boston defender in the process
giving the young center plenty of space to beat Korpisalo high to the blocker side while all alone in tight
The go-ahead goal made Killorn just the second Harvard University alum to record 300 career NHL assists and the 13th player to do so from the 2007 NHL Draft
Killorn has earned points in each of his last three games (2-2=4) and six points in his last seven outings
Carlsson's shorthanded tally was the first of his young NHL career
The second-year pro has been one of Anaheim's most consistent offensive players since the club returned from the 4 Nations Face-Off break one month ago
ranking second among team leaders with 16 points in 17 appearances during that span
Helleson has collected points in two of his last three games
now getting his first extended run in the NHL
ranks second among all rookie defensemen with 12 points on the season
The Ducks then doubled the lead late in the middle frame on another 2-on-1 rush
this time a drive to the net by Nesterenko for a shot first off Korpisalo and then defenseman Michael Callahan before trickling over the goal line
Nikita Nesterenko doubles Ducks lead with sixth career NHL goal
Nesterenko has scored in three of his last four games
and now owns four goals in 12 appearances this season
Boston would very briefly get back within one moments later on a 5-on-3 power play
as Pastrnak beat Gibson over the glove from the top of the right circle
Boston's leading scorer in each of the last three seasons
has recorded 12 goals in 18 career matchups against Anaheim
But the Ducks would reclaim full control before the end of the second period with goals by LaCombe and Gauthier 48 seconds apart
LaCombe first pushed the advantage to 3-1 on one of the weirder goals of the season
a flip from behind the net that bounced off center Pavel Zacha and the crossbar before sliding down Korpisalo's back into the net
Jackson LaCombe scores after wild bounces in Boston crease
The fortuitous carom gave LaCombe points in three straight games and moved him into a tie for eighth among NHL defensemen in goals (13)
LaCombe's 13 goals this season are also the most by a Ducks defenseman since Hampus Lindholm netted as many during the 2017-18 campaign
Lubomir Visnovsky holds the club record (18)
extending Anaheim's lead on a goal the Boston netminder certainly wanted back - a low shot from a sharp angle in the left wing corner that snuck under Korpisalo's right leg pad
Cutter Gauthier extends Ducks lead with 14th goal of rookie season
Gauthier continued his climb up the NHL rookie scoring leaderboard this season - now fifth in points
tied for fourth in goals and seventh in assists
Carlsson kept the fun going early in the third, answering the "We Want Chicken" calls within Honda Center as the finisher on a brilliant pass by LaCombe
The defenseman sparked the chance on the left wing wall
intercepting a Bruins clearing attempt and delivering a centering feed to Carlsson
who roofed it Korpisalo's glove for a four-goal Ducks cushion
Leo Carlsson finishes centering pass from Jackson LaCombe
McTavish then made it 6-2 on another goal off the rush
flying down left wing and again victimizing Korpisalo's glove hand with a shot up high
Mason McTavish scores Anaheim's sixth goal of the game with wrister off the rush
McTavish set a new career high in points (44) and matched his career-best total in goals (19)
The 21-year-old is now second among Anaheim team leaders in scoring this season and tied for second in goals
Geekie capped the scoring with seven minutes to play
providing a late bright spot in an otherwise long night for the visitors
The Ducks continue a five-game homestand Friday against the New York Rangers

Executive Director of Faith House since 2002
joins Discover Lafayette to talk about her life mission to help survivors of domestic violence become safe
Leaving an abusive situation is never easy due to various barriers such as financial insecurity
Faith House is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Lafayette
which provides free services to women and children who need help in getting out of a domestic violence situation
Its main source of funding (75%) is through federal grants ( Office on Violence Against Women
.and the organization relies upon volunteer services to keep its mission going
Faith House’s mission is to provide safety
empowerment and advocacy to survivors of domestic violence
It offers confidential and safe resources to those most in need
Billi studied to be a paralegal and was contacted in 1998 by a former classmate who asked her to work at Faith House
She had always had an interest in women’s rights after seeing women in her life experiencing extreme hardships and the opportunity seemed appropriate for her
Billi went to work at Faith House as a legal advocate helping survivors
I saw nothing else that I would want to do with my life other than continue to help survivors of domestic violence become safe
That became my life’s mission.” And for the record
we saw the calming energy Billi brings to the table that is a gift from God
Faith House addresses the challenges women face wherever they are
taking care of their family and trying to earn a livable income for themselves and their family
Many people don’t see the barriers that still exist for women
and equity happening more for women so that they can exist in this world
Not having to stay with an abusive partner and to be able to live and support your children
You should not have to be abused just to be able to pay your bills
I mean that that’s what these survivors are facing.”
Many domestic violence victims and their families need emergency shelter
Faith House offers a safe refuge for those in the highest levels of danger who have experienced severe cases of domestic violence with a high potential for lethality
“It is very typical for a family to walk in
Sometimes they don’t have shoes on their feet
they’re in their nightclothes and haven’t eaten for 2 or 3 days
and are starving when they walk in the door
The shelter offers anything you could imagine that you would need if you left your home with nothing
Glenn Armentor has been generous in supporting Faith House through underwriting television ads which highlight Faith House and its mission to help domestic violence victims
Since this advertising campaign started six years ago
Faith House has had thousands of people call their hotline and say they heard the commercial and reached out for help
They would not have otherwise known there was a place to go for assistance
Many survivors worry about their children when considering leaving
Losing custody due to financial instability is a significant concern
Abusers often use threats of taking children as a means of control
The fear of homelessness and the inability to provide a stable environment keeps many in dangerous situations
Faith House offers emergency shelter to those in the highest danger levels
providing a safe space where families can focus on rebuilding their lives
Survivors are coached on strategies such as leaving only one car door unlocked and backing into driveways for quick exits
as well as making themselves as small as possible in a corner if attacked
Having essential documents and belongings ready to grab in an emergency is crucial
Teaching children to run to a neighbor or using a pre-established code word to alert the children to danger can also be lifesaving
Survivors often freeze up during violent incidents
so training for automatic responses is essential
Faith House helps survivors develop safety plans tailored to their situations
including strategies for staying safe during visitations with abusive parents
Since abuse does not always end when a victim leaves
ongoing safety planning and legal assistance are critical
Faith House works with survivors to understand their legal rights and navigate court processes
Confidentiality is paramount at Faith House
Many survivors do not disclose their abuse due to shame
such as questioning why they stayed when abused
Faith House ensures survivors have a trusted space where their experiences are validated
and financial constraints often prevent victims from accessing legal support
The Lafayette Bar Association provides essential legal forms and assistance for those who cannot afford an attorney
selling low-cost forms that help in filing protective orders
The Faith House shelter consists of ten bedrooms
including a fully stocked kitchen where families can cook their own meals
This structure helps maintain a sense of normalcy
a playroom and laundry facilities ensure that families have access to basic needs
Recognizing that pets are also victims of domestic violence and have suffered physical and/or emotional abuse
Faith House has an on-site pet facility through the generosity of Red Rover
a national foundation dedicated to ensuring that survivors can keep their pets
and having a safe space for them when they leave the abusive home is crucial for the survivors’ emotional well-being
Faith House offers support groups where survivors can connect
These groups are facilitated across multiple parishes and provide a sense of community
transitional housing programs help survivors move from emergency shelter to independent living
is being developed to expand these services
and local volunteer efforts sustain many programs
Faith House recently launched Wildflower Lane
that sells donated items from local boutiques and gently used items from donors
and all proceeds directly support the organization
Board members and volunteers are instrumental in spreading awareness and securing resources
Volunteers can also help with shelter maintenance
and organizing group activities for survivors
volunteer training is intensive to ensure proper care and confidentiality
Faith House collaborates with the Acadiana Coalition Against Homelessness to address the link between domestic violence and homelessness
Many survivors end up on the streets due to a lack of resources
making accessible shelter options a critical need
Law enforcement plays a key role in intervention
but victims may be hesitant to press charges
Officers are trained to provide support beyond the immediate crisis
Community members can help by offering non-judgmental support
being available for survivors when they are ready to reach out
Medical professionals frequently encounter and diagnose domestic violence injuries when victims present themselves in the doctor’s office or the hospital
Recognizing signs of abuse and offering discreet support can make a difference
Faith House provides information through its Facebook page and community outreach efforts to raise awareness and connect survivors to help
Volunteer projects range from maintaining shelter grounds to sorting donations and assisting with fundraising
Those interested can contact Faith House at (337) 232-8954 or the 24-hour hotline at 1-888-411-1333
The organization’s wishlist includes expanded shelter capacity and enhanced therapeutic services
With hundreds of people turned away each year due to space limitations
Faith House currently employs two full-time therapists who provide trauma-informed counseling
but more resources are needed to support survivors’ mental health
Faith House continues to be a beacon of hope for those affected by domestic violence
and the tools necessary to rebuild lives free from abuse
