by Perrin Moore (WCIV) — Dozens of demonstrators and a coalition of local organizations led protests outside of the Elbit Systems of America facility in Ladson Thursday opposing its Israeli parent company producing weapons used against Palestinians in Gaza and seeking Charleston County's divestment from the Middle Eastern conflict Over 75 people showed up to picket the weapons manufacturer they say is getting unfair tax breaks from the county and producing weapons for the Israeli military for its assault on Gaza members of the coalition have gone out to rally outside of Elbit's Ladson facility Elbit Out of SC said they wanted to coordinate a larger picket on May 1 in honor of International Workers Day a public holiday observed to honor workers in many Western countries that predated Labor Day becoming a federal holiday "We're here at the Elbit Systems weapons factory to recognize hard working Americans by saying ‘We don't work to pay for bombing hospitals assassinating children and starving people to death!'" said local small business owner and protester Martin Levisen self-described as anti-genocide and pro-human rights included members from Free Palestine Charleston the Charleston Democratic Socialists of America They said their May Day protest outside Elbit America showed "unified recognition that Charleston workers prefer to invest their taxes in improvements to local quality of life rather than the war economy of a foreign nation." our money should not be used to commit genocide which is the business of Elbit Systems," said one Charleston County resident in attendance Organizers reported that a "stream of employee vehicles" left the facility and security "abandoned" the sole entrance around 2 p.m. just 30 minutes after the peaceful demonstration began The coalition said they plan to continue their demonstrations to "permanently close the doors of Elbit Systems" after deeming the May Day picket a success that provided "ample motivation." In Ladson, Elbit Systems of America in part produces the SIGMA Next-Gen. Mobile Howitzer an artillery vehicle utilized by the IDF with a fully automated 155mm 52-caliber cannon that fires 8 rounds per minute with a 40-round magazine The Ladson facility opened in May 2023 after Elbit was awarded a $700,000 set-aside grant and fee-in-lieu of tax agreement by Charleston County Local lawmakers praised the company's expansion into the Lowcountry Nancy Mace saying at the time that Elbit's "commitment to building the best for the best will result in cutting-edge defense systems for America and our allies and there’s no better place for this work to be done than right here in South Carolina.” Democrat Rep Jim Clyburn said he was "pleased" Elbit chose North Charleston as the new home for its Ground Combat Vehicle Center of Excellence and that the facility would bring "good-paying manufacturing jobs" to his district while injecting "millions of dollars" into the local economy State lawmakers announced the formation of the new South Carolina-Israel Legislative Caucus in April seeking to "strengthen" the Palmetto State's ties to Israel and "foster greater cooperation explore new opportunities for growth and trade education and beyond," the Consul General of Israel to the Southeast US Anat Sultan-Dadon said at a press conference One protester in attendance was removed from the announcement event labelling South Carolina tax dollars as "blood money." Kansas City, however, had a chance to score with less than in the two outs in the fourth against Fried. After Salvador Perez led off with a double, Fried left him stranded by retiring Michael Massey, Hunter Renfroe and Melendez. “We put some pretty good at-bats against Fried, but not enough to string together enough hits for runs,” Quatraro said. The Royals have been struggling for runs. They are tied for 27th in the Major Leagues in runs scored (55) and have scored four runs or fewer in 16 of 18 games, which is last in the Majors. Kansas City is 6-10 when scoring four runs or fewer. Quatraro believes the Royals will snap out of this slump. This is the same team that went to the postseason in 2024 by finishing near the middle of the pack (13th) in runs scored. “There are too many good players in that room. It’s part of baseball,” Quatraro said. “These guys are working their tails off. We are facing really good pitching, and that’s part of the game. We can pitch, too. These games can [turn around] with one swing of the bat. So they have to keep their heads up and keep going.” WATCHBicyclist killed in hit and run near Spinx on Ladson Roadby Abigail Quinn (WCIV) — A late night hit and run involving a vehicle and a  individuals who have accomplished remarkable achievements in their journeys talks about when they became the “first” whether that is breaking records The series explores how these experiences helped them grow personally uncovering new strengths and depths within themselves "Forging Firsts" highlights the meaningful impact they have and how they’re inspiring others to follow in their footsteps.  where I was born to parents who entered the working world at a very young age Although they didn’t have access to education they instilled in me core values like respect and the courage to speak up when something felt wrong The first person to broaden my view of what was possible was my fifth-grade teacher Ethel Benn - a remarkable Black woman who saw potential in me and opened my mind to all that I could be “What makes you think you can’t be the smartest fifth grader in this classroom?” Her words caught me by surprise so why not you?” Her belief in me was revolutionary and her words have stayed with me ever since While my parents emphasized good behavior and respect Benn taught me the power of learning and knowledge even though it wasn’t part of the official curriculum I remember taking turns keeping an eye out for the principal as she brought to life stories of W.E.B Benn sparked my love for history and English I noticed that other students had resources and connections I lacked and their parents’ jobs opened doors and opportunities that were out of reach for my family I’ll never forget a science project that I was unable to complete not because I didn’t want to or wasn’t capable but because I didn’t have the materials needed to do it It wasn’t that other students were smarter than me I began to realize that the playing field wasn’t level and the difference wasn’t in intelligence but in opportunity I observed and experienced these disparities throughout high school which led me to a pressing question: How many kids aren’t succeeding simply because of their environment and what can we do to provide the resources they need to thrive Asking these critical questions shaped my philosophy on education and sparked my desire to create opportunities for others.  the way out seemed to be through athletics – that’s the path legends like Wilt Chamberlain took But I was determined to pursue a different route one where I allowed my mind to lead me to a fulfilling life I excelled in my history and English courses when the idea of becoming a teacher was suggested I couldn’t quite see that as a path for me and returned to Philadelphia to teach at a local high school It wasn’t until I stepped into the classroom that I fell in love with teaching The most rewarding moments were watching concepts come alive in my students’ minds watching their excitement as they grasped new ideas rekindled my own love of learning but initially I faced a lot of intolerance from some of the parents The school was located in a predominantly white and I was one of only three Black teachers there I often was called a number of hurtful things I remember one student’s father passing away I brought a condolence card signed by the class to the family’s home not realizing that the wake was taking place at that very moment Unfamiliar with the tradition of an in-house wake I felt out of place and aware that I was surrounded by people who might not think kindly of me drawing on my parents’ teachings about respect and compassion for others this act of empathy helped shift perceptions and earned me respect within the community It was one of the first moments I truly understood how powerful shared experiences could be in bridging divides I decided to transition into higher education securing a fellowship with the University of Washington to earn my Master’s degree but I felt I had accomplished all I set out to do I didn’t expect that Stanford was made for me but moving to California allowed me to teach and complete my studies in a place that was also ideal for my growing family With my background as a former high school track athlete and my husband’s experience as an NFL player it was no surprise that our kids developed a love for athletics But we had one rule: each child had to participate in both a sport and an art each season or school year This ensured they were well rounded and developed skills beyond their “playing field” and a beginning career at Santa Clara University I was invited to give a talk at the University of Wisconsin-Madison though I joked that I wouldn’t overstay my welcome for fear of the harsh Wisconsin winters I’ll never forget at one point during the conversation “I already have a job.” Without missing a beat I eventually decided to give Wisconsin a try It turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life Wisconsin was the perfect environment to push me and help me grow It provided me everything I had hoped for and things I had never even thought of Wisconsin empowers educators to innovate in ways that other schools would never consider I had the privilege of serving on the athletic board and serve as a Big Ten Faculty representative One of my responsibilities was approving athletic schedules ensuring that travel demands didn’t overwhelm our student-athletes I remember an early conversation with former basketball head coach Bo Ryan I pointed out that his team’s proposed schedule had heavy travel and suggested giving the players a bit more rest This allowed me to blend my love for education and sports who came to me one day and shared his dream of becoming a teacher we worked out a schedule that allowed him to balance his classes and eventually went to the University of North Carolina-Charlotte where he completed his PhD he’s the Dean of Students at Georgia State University It’s experiences like these that truly capture the impact of a place that values education and opportunities allowing students to pursue all of their dreams I became the first Black woman to be tenured in the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison there’s a bit of sadness that comes with it and it took over a century for someone like me to reach this milestone I feel a deep sense of accomplishment when I see the Black women who have followed in my footsteps If there’s one thing that I impart to them I remind them that their journeys are about more than just personal success – they’re also paving the way for others who aren’t here yet but I’m here to support them and encourage them to keep moving forward knowing they’re part of something much bigger and yet they instilled in us an optimism about the future My generation fought in the civil rights era we didn’t always pass on that same sense of progress and possibility we need to do more than just parent them—they need mentors They need guidance so they don’t feel pressured to make adult decisions before they’re ready is something I hope to inspire in my students There’s a transformative power in using our minds and discovering what makes us truly come alive I talk about legacy often with my students My hope is not to be remembered solely as the first Black woman to earn tenure in the School of Education whose life’s purpose was to teach and guide others I want people to remember me as someone who believed in the potential of every student and helped them discover that same belief within themselves Thanks rotation is thin because left-hander Jose Quintana needs more time to build up after signing on March 5 Aaron Ashby and DL Hall landed on the injured list during Spring Training That’s without mentioning that Brandon Woodruff and Robert Gasser were already on the IL because they were rehabbing from surgery they used first baseman Jake Bauers as a reliever for the second consecutive game while the Brewers became the first team since 1901 to allow at least 15 homers in its first three games of a season “As you come into the series with the pitching as decimated [as it is] – eight of our top 13 [pitchers] are not here and two of your starters don’t get deep into the game – you are going to be really thin,” Brewers manager Pat Murphy said the Yankees are good and they kicked our enough to get through this time We knew it would be tough with all those injuries I trust that we will be able to get through it.” Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich, for one, declined to blame the three-game sweep on the Yankees’ use of the Torpedo model bats where the barrel rests in a non-traditional location “I think us players will try anything,” Yelich said “I don’t think the kind of bat you use has an impact on the outcome of the series “I don’t think we played anywhere close to good enough to win any of those games the last three days I don’t think the bats had any factor on the series For the first time in the three-game series and that occurred in the first inning when Sal Frelick singled to right field off starter Marcus Stroman But Civale had problems once he stepped on ended up leaving the game after throwing 68 pitches (44 strikes) because of a hamstring injury he suffered in the third “We are being smart about it and getting some more information in the next few days,” Civale said Civale reminded reporters that there are 159 games left in the season We’ve all been through three-game losing streaks before It’s not ideal on how you want to start the season but 28th NEW YORK -- Happy Birthday, OK, so we are a day late, but it wasn’t a dollar short for the Yankees during the second game of a doubleheader at Yankee Stadium on Sunday. His solo homer in the sixth inning helped New York defeat the Blue Jays, 5-1 In the first game, New York made it a grind for right-hander Kevin Gausman in an 11-2 victory but he didn’t play that day because the game was called because of inclement weather But it turned out to be a great Sunday for him as he went 3-for-8 in the twin bill and extended his on-base streak to 24 games With the score tied at 1 and Blue Jays right-hander Chris Bassitt on the mound Judge swung at the first pitch and hit the ball over the right-field wall to give New York a one-run lead It was Judge’s eighth homer of the year and his first since April 16 against the Royals He may have been homerless for a week -- big deal -- but he is still hitting .406 for the season He is just so good at not leaving the strike zone,” manager Aaron Boone said “So if you keep making pitches against him People have to be aware how dangerous he is [with his power] He is really doing a good job using the entire field kind of spraying the ball around right now.” “I didn’t feel the ball off the bat,” Escarra said about the home run it’s fun watching Judge up close and personal Such a special human being on and off the field You look up and he already has two hits and a walk,” Escarra said “It’s special for him to be my teammate and learn from him every day.” What’s the biggest thing Escarra learned from Judge “Just be the same guy everyday,” Escarra said but we have to stay even keel and be the best version of ourselves.” Sign up to receive our daily Morning Lineup to stay in the know about the latest trending topics around Major League Baseball Right-hander Clarke Schmidt and four relievers, including new closer Luke Weaver combined to allow one run on three hits and struck out 12 batters After offseason of 'what ifs,' Royals still looking to solve YankeesApril 15th NEW YORK -- Before Monday’s game against the Yankees, Royals shortstop acknowledged he had a bitter taste in his mouth after his team lost to the Bronx Bombers in the American League Division Series last October The Royals went to Kansas City with the series tied at one game apiece but the Yankees ended up winning two games on enemy territory before advancing to the AL Championship Series against the Guardians We had a lot of motivation knowing we could have beaten them and could have done more,” Witt said “You try to give yourself a reset and try to get back to work.” The two teams were back at it six months later at Yankee Stadium. There was a lot of adrenaline when the game started between the two clubs, but it was the same old story with the Yankees winning the game, 4-1 It was Witt who gave Kansas City a 1-0 lead by hitting his second homer of the season on a 3-2 pitch off right-hander Carlos Carrasco It was the second time in Witt’s career that he has homered in an at-bat that went 10-plus pitches The only other Royals player with multiple such homers since pitch counts have been tracked (1988) is Mike Sweeney just being able to get ready and on time on a couple of other good pitches I was able to get out in front [on the slider],” Witt said But that was it as far as Kansas City’s offense was concerned the Royals collected one more hit and that came from Witt himself in the ninth inning off closer Devin Williams They are 27th in the Major Leagues in runs scored (53) and have scored four runs or fewer in 15 of 17 games Kansas City is 6-9 when scoring four runs or fewer and their six such wins are tied with Texas for the most in the Majors “You like to swing the bats a little bit better you have to give credit to the opposing pitcher “We had a couple of walks in the first inning and we were not able to capitalize on them But we need to do a better job stringing some bigger innings together.” Witt said he is not concerned about the offense He believes it will pick up sooner rather than later “We just have to keep preparing and getting better every day That’s what we are going to continue doing.” It was Carrasco who did the heavy lifting against Kansas City pitching five innings and allowing the one run on one hit “We knew he was going to keep the ball down,” Quatraro said I think his fastball shape was a little different So it was maybe a little different than what we expected That meant right-hander Seth Lugo needed to be perfect but he ended up with his second loss off the season All four runs came in on solo homers by Jazz Chisholm Jr. “We all know that he’s very aggressive in the zone; he doesn’t like to walk people,” Chisholm said of Lugo I think we went up there with a plan of attack [to] get your pitch early Maybe that’s what the Royals need to do on offense (WCIV) — A Ladson man is facing several charges after an attempted murder investigation in the Ladson area of Berkeley County was arrested and charged with trafficking fentanyl four grams or more two counts of possession of other controlled substance possession of a stolen firearm and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime Deputies responded to Caromi Drive in reference to a shooting on Oct they located a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the head READ MORE | "Shooting in Kingstree leaves one injured, damages home: WCSO" Waldron was identified as a suspect during the investigation Deputies said they contactedthe US Marshals Service Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force in order to get Waldron in custody They located Waldron in the parking lot of Walmart on North Main Street on Tuesday After taking down Waldron in the parking lot authorities executed a probable cause search of his vehicle and said they located approximately seven grams of fentanyl Waldron was booked at Hill-Finklea Detention Center A variety of tacos are served at El Molino on July 19 A new Mexican restaurant is coming to the Charleston-area this year Parker Milner is the Food Editor of The Post and Courier He is a Boston College graduate and former professional hockey player who joined The Post and Courier after leading the Charleston City Paper's food section LADSON — The owners of a popular restaurant and market with locations in West Ashley and North Charleston are opening a new business El Molino Supermarket, known for its tacos will open at 113 College Park Road in Ladson previously home to a gym named Fitness Fusion The new destination is slated to open in September 2025 The need for a third El Molino came from a desire to cater to the growing population in Summerville they say (North Charleston is) too far away," Sierra said El Molino Ladson's offering will mirror that of the other two locations, meaning patrons can expect a scratch kitchen; selection of Mexican pantry items, produce and beverages; bakery; and tortilleria, where the staff will produce house-made tortillas in bulk The taqueria inside the new outpost will lean more heavily into coastal Mexican cooking than North Charleston and West Ashley with seafood-forward items like ceviche and aguachile planned for the menu Reach Parker Milner at 843-830-3911.
