LAFAYETTE, Colo. — One person died in a crash on northbound Highway 287 at Dillon Road around 6:23 a.m. Monday, the Lafayette Police Department said
The driver of a Nissan pickup truck was heading eastbound through the intersection on a green light
when the driver of a Chevrolet pickup truck heading southbound through the intersection ran a red light
The force of the wreck sent both pickup trucks into a traffic light pole
The 52-year-old man driving the Nissan pickup truck was pronounced dead at the scene
The 56-year-old man driving the Chevrolet pickup truck was taken to the hospital
Lafayette police do not know the extent of his injuries
No arrests have been made or citations issued

coffee lovers don't have to look far for a great cup of joe in Acadiana
According to New Orleans entrepreneur Jim Currie
the area coffee scene is bursting with talent — and exceptional coffee
He thinks the Lafayette market is more than ready for a coffee event that will allow consumers
roasters and baristas to interact directly and learn from each other
The inaugural Lafayette Coffee Festival will be held June 14
and Currie said coffee connoisseurs should be ready to dive deeper into the world of beans than they ever have before
"There's so much tremendous passion around everything we do with food in the Deep South
"We don't lack for really great coffee companies and really great coffee people
and the strong epicurious audience in Lafayette."
Don't look for bands or fair games at this festival
The programming will be more along the lines of "coffee class," according to Currie
with a focus on coffee workshops and brewing demonstrations
"The world has about eight or nine major brew methods
you just see two or three of them," he said
"But these other methods are kind of fun and really do change the flavor."
he talks about the Japanese being notorious in their studiousness and being exacting with their coffee
Being precise makes a difference and can create better coffee
and concern yourself with the ratio of coffee grinds to water
the level of grind — it suddenly transforms how you're extracting flavor out of the coffee molecules," Currie said
you can tinker and change the flavor of the coffee you're using now."
Currie's passion for coffee is newly developed out of his passion for promoting New Orleans
Lafayette and the Gulf South as a major coffee center
competing with the likes of Seattle and Portland
He spent his career in health care marketing and said he and his business partner
decided to take on a retirement project that would promote a key Louisiana industry
after research that revealed that the Port of Orleans had been a major player in the world of coffee
before regions like the Pacific Northwest became ascendant in the 1970s and '80s
Richards and Currie started the New Orleans Coffee Festival
which is a two-day trade show that promotes knowledge building between Louisiana coffee craftspeople and global industry players
The Lafayette event will complement Currie's New Orleans-based trade show with a focus on the consumer experience
Currie and Richards see coffee culture progressing in much the same way cocktail culture has in recent decades
with a deeper consumer appreciation for quality ingredients and the expertise of mixologists (or baristas)
"When bartenders became mixologists over the last 20 years
you saw a real resurgence in the American cocktail," said Currie
"The same thing is happening with baristas and the development of coffee
with this great exploration of the adventure in flavor that coffee provides."
"We could not have picked a better industry to promote in Louisiana," Currie said
"It's just a really positive place to put your time
I think Lafayette could be one of the real secret weapons in coffee
can't become known as one of the really cool coffee places in the whole country."

LAFAYETTE PARISH — Residents across Lafayette Parish are being urged to prepare now for hazardous weather expected to move into the area Tuesday afternoon and continue through Thursday morning
A flash flood watch is in effect for the parish
with forecasts calling for 4 to 8 inches of rain
and a high risk of localized flash flooding
Forecasters say some isolated areas could receive up to 10 inches of rain
Officials with the Lafayette Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (OHSEP) said they are actively monitoring the situation in coordination with local agencies and emergency responders
chief of staff with Lafayette Consolidated Government
stressed the importance of early preparation
"Current national weather forecasts place Lafayette at the heart of the most severe weather," Dayries said
and some isolated areas could see up to 12 inches
This is flash flooding — it’s going to be a slow-moving event
Dayries said parish agencies are coordinating in advance of the storm
with flooding being the biggest concern for officials
“What we're trying to get across to citizens and businesses is: start preparing now
Protect your home and business before the rain starts,” she said.Just over a week ago
Lafayette experienced flooding after only a few hours of rainfall
raising new concerns about the city's drainage system and overall flood preparedness
“We have a robust system for clearing our ditches,” Smith said
We make sure everything is open and can convey water properly
Business owners are also being asked to take precautions ahead of the storm
Sandbags are available at select locations
city officials are encouraging residents to secure important documents and make necessary flood preparations at home
“What’s next for the Class of 2025” is a series that features Lafayette grads—where they’re headed, and the mentors, resources, and experiences that inspired their future path. Stay tuned for more stories throughout May.
Destination/future plans: Saiku White ’25 has been invited to the NFL Denver Broncos Rookie Minicamp as an undrafted free agent
He’s been playing football since he was in third grade—and spent the final months of his senior year in workouts with NFL scouts ahead of the draft
Involvement on campus: Being a student-athlete is no easy feat
plus watched films—in addition to game time and travel
He says the key to balancing a Division I sport and classwork is routine
“That’s the big one—establish that routine around your schedule
you’ll find those pockets of time that you can maximize.”
White was encouraged by his coaches to apply to the Black Student Athlete Summit in Los Angeles
He and three other student-athletes were chosen to represent Lafayette in 2023
and White calls it a highlight of his college career
meet pro athletes and NCAA representatives
and share experiences and knowledge with student-athletes from across the country
Mentors and experiences that mattered most: As far as memories go
on the field it’s hard to top the 2023 football season when Lafayette secured the Patriot League Championship
and it was great to see the camaraderie we had
White explained the team started off that season doing a workout with the Marines. “It was brutal—and pushed us to our limits,” he says. But the players knew if they could make it through that training, they could do anything together. After a 28-20 win that September in a rainy game against Monmouth, the team really hit its stride
which propelled them forward the rest of the season
White was a team captain for both the 2023 and 2024 seasons
In 2023 he was named to the Associated Press All-America Third Team
lauded with All-Patriot League First Team status and earned a spot on the Preseason All-Patriot League Team
In 2024 he was named to the Preseason All-Patriot League Team
was a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award
slotted on the FCS Football Central Preseason All-America Second Team and Phil Steele Preseason All-America Third Team
selected to the Associated Press FCS All-America First Team Defense and Stats Perform All-America Third Team
and named to the All-Patriot League First Team
“I’m grateful to the entire coaching staff—they put their faith in me from day one
White says it was economics professor Rosie Bukics
White took his first economics class with Bukics
and he took one of her last classes before she retired
“Her wisdom has really helped me out a lot,” White says
and I would not have been as successful without her.”
the most important piece of advice he can offer to younger students is to put yourself out there and meet new people
I did my best to find people outside football to eat lunch with
to talk with—that’s a critical part of college

An independent audit of Lafayette Consolidated Government for the fiscal year that ended Oct. 31 suggests the administration of Mayor-President Monique Boulet continues to clean up problems created under her predecessor
The audit reveals 11 problems, down from 29 two years ago under then-Mayor-President Josh Guillory, who Boulet defeated in November 2023. She took office in January 2024. The Guillory administration disagreed with most of the 29 findings in 2022
Only two new minor problems are noted by the auditors with Kolder
both pertaining to federal program compliance under the Boulet administration
One is related to travel documentation; the other to failing to verify vendor qualifications
LCG is called out for a problem first noted in the 2023 audit under Guillory
a possible violation of the Home Rule Charter and legislation that prohibits spending city money for projects outside the city limits
LCG has a grant-related fund in a consolidated cash account
most of it related to construction of detention ponds outside the city of Lafayette
The pooled cash account contains funds that have had "significant cash overdrafts" covered by other funds containing revenue from dedicated city of Lafayette sales and property taxes and grants
which may violate the intended purposes of the tax measures
The city-parish attorney is reviewing the tax dedications to determine if the projects are allowed under the city's tax dedications approved by voters
The auditors repeated a finding from 2022 and 2023 questioning whether more than $5.8 million from two city sales taxes dedicated for capital projects in the city of Lafayette were improperly used to pay for projects outside the city during the Guillory administration
city sales tax revenue was spent on a controversial St
the Homewood/Coulee Ile des Cannes detention pond projects
a comprehensive stormwater plan for the parish and a $402,723 legal settlement to people who leased property acquired for the Homewood/ Coulee Ile des Cannes detention ponds
The possible misuse of parish drainage funds is another finding that initially occurred in 2022
LCG used an as-needed excavation contract to respond to a tire fire at a landfill in Scott and to build the L-17 detention pond
The $1.15 million invoice submitted by the contractor did not differentiate the cost for each project
LCG used $1 million from the environmental services fund and $159,600 from the parishwide drainage maintenance fund
Supporting documentation and information provided to the auditors by LCG were not sufficient to determine whether the detention pond was a valid drainage project
Another finding that was initially reported in 2023 involves missing fixed assets from the Lafayette Utilities System communications (fiber) division
A police report for 62 unaccounted-for assets was submitted in December
Also in 2023, under Guillory, 25 fire sticks — used to stream movies and TV — could not be found
A new warehouse supervisor was hired in November
The financial report is available at lafayettela.gov under finance and management

— Police officers showed up at a second-floor apartment at 2800 Ravenwood Court to safely escort a woman and her son out of a domestic violence situation
But instead of a run-of-the-mill standby detail
the two officers found themselves in a gunfight about 9 p.m
Tippecanoe County Coroner Carrie Costello released Smith's name Friday morning
A forensic autopsy performed Friday morning found that Smith died from gunshot wounds to the head and torso
The manner of death was determined to be homicide
and the woman and her son were not injured
Police have not yet released the names of the two officers who exchanged gunshots with Smith
The officers have been placed on paid administrative until the department's firearm review board and prosecutors finish their investigations of the killing
Smith was arrested in July 2024 on suspicion of domestic battery involving the woman from Thursday's report
A search of court cases does not indicate that Smith was charged
Smith becomes the first person killed by Lafayette police officers in more than five years
The last person killed in a Lafayette police-action shooting was Dustin Furr
Furr was in an 11-minute standoff with police after he called 911 to report a man with a loaded handgun at 23rd and State streets
but he began walking toward an officer and raised his handgun while pointing it at him
Another officer with a rifle fired two shots
The firearm review board cleared the officer seven days after the shooting

While Monday's weather might be cool and sunny, Tuesday and most of the week expected to bring heavy showers across the Lafayette and Acadiana region

2025: The latest forecasts for Tuesday night and into Wednesday show some potentially catastrophic rainfall for some areas of Acadiana
With forecasts showing 4-8 inches of rain throughout the region
concerns are on the rise for locals who live in flood-prone areas
the memory of what happened right before Festival International weighs heavily
KATC meteorologist Daniel Phillips notes on his morning forecast that "During both Tuesday evening's commute and Wednesday morning's," and to "be prepared to encounter water on area roadways and have alternate routes planned."

"Give yourself enough time to be flexible Wednesday morning

The National Weather Service has much of Acadiana under a flood watch until Sunday afternoon
2025: KATC Meteorologist Daniel Phillips said on Monday morning that the most likely chances for heavy rain will come Tuesday night into Wednesday morning
"Don't let Monday deceive you, this is not going to be an overly pleasant week in the weather world," he wrote Monday morning
"Rain will start Tuesday evening and periods of heavy rain will continue on and off through the remainder of the week."
a Flash Flood Watch is already in place in anticipation of this week's storms
The National Weather Service has this update as of 6:30 a.m
This forecast will be updated throughout the week as the National Weather Service updates South Louisiana on the coming storm system
LAFAYETTE, La. (KPEL News) — Those cooler temperatures we saw throughout Acadiana this weekend could be giving way to moderate flood possibilities later this week, weather forecasts warn
We've got a "wet and stormy pattern" on the way as rain makes its way back into South Louisiana on Monday night and continues through at least the midweek
The heavy rainfall could also lead to flash flooding in some areas
According to KATC meteorologist Breyanna Lewis
"While it might not be what we want to hear, we are entering a wet and stormy pattern, as rain returns on Monday night," Lewis said in a social media post on Saturday
"Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected from Tuesday through Wednesday
with scattered showers and thunderstorms likely on Thursday
though a few lingering showers may remain."
The heavy rain and thunderstorms have the potential to become flash flooding events on Tuesday and Wednesday
but added that we are not expecting "severe" weather
"We do not expect severe weather; however
heavy rainfall that could lead to flash flooding will be the main concern," she explained
adding later that "It will be important to exercise caution while traveling
as an all-day rain event is likely on Tuesday and Wednesday."
Those potentially-heavy rains can cause several intersections and key roadways to become difficult—if not impossible—to pass through if the rain accumulates

While we're not anticipating any major closures
all it takes is a storm system stalling over Acadiana to cause major problems
and that isn't an unheard-of situation
it's best to stay off the roads until the weather system moves through
Keep your eyes on local news and weather outlets as we head into the week

After two years of fiscal issues cited in audits
LCG has no major new findings in this year's audit
That doesn't mean there are no findings; all but two of the findings listed in the audit started in previous years
that total number - 11 - is down from 18 last year
and more than two dozen in the year prior to that
To see our story about the 2024 audit, which looked at practices during the last year of the Guillory administration, click here. To look at the story about 2023 audit, click here
Mayor-President Monique Boulet published the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report
last week with a release stating that it "reflects significant progress in financial health
You can read the audit for yourself by scrolling down
"The FY2024 audit marked a major step forward for the Boulet Administration
reducing the total number of audit findings from 18 in the prior year to just 11
The results include no new findings related to purchasing or revenue compliance and the full correction of three long-standing findings
with others well on their way to resolution," the release states
Boulet said her administration is working to clean up long-standing issues
“This audit confirms the direction we are moving in—toward strong fiscal responsibility and accountability,” said Lafayette Mayor-President Monique B
“We’ve restored critical oversight processes and have made meaningful headway in correcting issues that have lingered for years
It’s a big win for good government and the people of Lafayette Parish.”
This year's audit cites a $26 million overdraft related to the ponds that originally occurred in 2023
led by the Guillory Administration at the time
"may not have complied with their Home Rule Charter
and/or enabling legislation by improperly utilizing the dedicated resources of other funds participating in their pooled cash account."
Boulet's administration responded that they're actively working to figure out how the projects could be funded properly
adding that "during the fiscal year we engaged an engineering firm to analyze these projects for functionality and benefits to the City and Parish of Lafayette
The firm is still working on the evaluation and has not released an official opinion on the projects
A determination of compliance with dedications will be made once final opinions and analysis are received."
Here's what Boulet's release highlighted:
The audit also reaffirmed the strength of LCG’s financial controls
with no new significant deficiencies identified.“This is about more than numbers,” Mayor-President Boulet added
and ensuring public confidence through transparency and action
The administration emphasized the improvements in audit results align directly with LCG’s top priorities: restoring legal credibility
improving operational efficiency—particularly in public safety—ensuring transparent public reporting
and investing wisely in transformative infrastructure projects
No material challenges surfaced in the audit that would impact next year’s budget planning
and no new accounting standards affected this year’s results
A full copy of the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report and audit findings is available on the Lafayette Consolidated Government website here
The chair of the City Council also issued a release on the audit
“The strides we've made in strengthening LCG’s financial position are the result of deliberate and sustained efforts by the Councils,” said Kenneth P
Chair of the Lafayette City Council & City Council Finance Chair
“Our role in setting fiscal policy and ensuring responsible budgeting through checks and balances has been crucial in achieving these results.”

West Lafayette sets guidelines for Monday's meeting on SK Hynix's proposed plantLafayette Journal & CourierWEST LAFAYETTE
— The fate of SK Hynix's $3.87 billion microchip manufacturing plant location rests in the hands of Monday's city council vote
The South Korea chip manufacturing company wants to change sites in West Lafayette
The council will vote Monday night whether to approve the rezoning that would allow that
the plan was to build the factory at Yeager Road about a quarter of a mile north of Kalberer Road
Then the city and SK Hynix floated the idea of building at the northwest corner of Salisbury Street and Kalberer Road
Site B generated backlash from residents who live in University Farms
a housing addition on the southeast corner of Salisbury Street and Kalberer Road
Monday in the council chambers inside city hall
City officials anticipate a large turnout of residents who want to voice their opinions over the semiconductor microchip plant
Because of the need to have access to the city's technology for the meeting
To help accommodate all those planning to attend
the council chambers occupancy is restricted to 120 people
Seats will be reserved for those presenting items on the agenda
The city hall has up to three overflow rooms available to residents if the council chambers fills up
Assisted listening devices will be available in the council chambers and the Bean Room
Those needing assisted listening devices are encouraged to arrive early for seating in either the council chambers or the Bean Room
Those who are disabled and require accommodations should contact the mayor's office at 765-775-5102
"Everyone who wishes to speak will have the opportunity to do so," the city's news release states
Those who want to address the council must sign in on a speaker sheet
which will be available in the council chambers and each overflow room
Each speaker will have three minutes to address the council
If the speaker is summoned from an overflow room
he or she must leave the council's chambers after making his or her remarks so the council complies with occupancy limits
There will be no electronic commenting during this meeting
comments and questions may be submitted before the meeting to clerk@westlafayette.in.gov
You can watch the council meeting online on the city's website
followed by clicking on the office of the clerk tab
There will be a video link to the May 5 meeting
The agenda and related documents are also available at that site

“The chemistry research course (CHEM 366: Course-based Research Experience in Chemistry) that I took during the spring semester of my sophomore year was the turning point that helped Lafayette truly feel like home
The countless conversations about my project and potential next steps with my professors led me to realize just how much the faculty care about our success as students
Whether it was an in-depth conversation about a complicated chemistry problem or a short interaction just asking about how the day was going
they were always eager to help out anyway they could
Knowing that I was not just a random student in a lecture hall
but rather a valued member of the community
solidified Lafayette feeling like my home away from home.” –Tyler Roberts ’25 (biochemistry and neuroscience
minor in biotechnology and bioengineering)
“Lafayette felt like home even before setting foot on campus as a student
The warmth and camaraderie that radiates between Leopards began for me at my high school graduation when I was puzzled by the loud cheers from the crowd as I walked across the stage in my cap
which I had decorated with Lafayette’s mascot
I am an only child with just my parents in the audience
so the cheers from the crowd were a bit surprising
I discovered that it was my friend’s cousin
We are a family at Lafayette and always support one another.’ This was a promise she kept throughout my freshman year
This moment set the stage for the unimaginable support I received from faculty
and the Easton community throughout my four years
The encouraging spirit at Lafayette is contagious
and I grew passionate about mentoring and being that support system for other students
I am lucky to have had this feeling of home from the very beginning.” –Lauren Daniels ’25 (psychology
“Home has always been where I feel seen and supported—first in New York and Ecuador
associate director of admissions and coordinator of student success
made time for me on short notice to talk through my Early Decision commitment
I felt it again when the Salsa Club board members jumped in without hesitation to help me learn steps I wasn’t completely sure about
when I help someone polish a resume or grasp macroeconomics
or when I pause to talk with someone I run into—even if I’m running late
I even feel it in the simple act of saying hello to familiar faces around campus
consistent interactions—that have made Lafayette feel like home
I’ll always be grateful.” –Denisse Villegas ’25 (economics and psychology
the most important part of ‘home’ is the people
and I was lucky to feel immediately embraced by those I met on my team at Lafayette
a network of upperclassmen eager to answer questions
genuinely cares for all of us as if we are his own kids
I’ve met some of my closest friends who have encouraged me to try new things
When I was struggling with my health freshman year
the captains left a stuffed animal and note in my dorm
and friends walked downtown to get me cupcakes from a bakery
I knew I had made the right choice coming to Lafayette because I hadn’t just joined a team; I had found a second family and a true home away from home.” –Meghan Inglis ’25 (neuroscience)
and night walks are really what made Lafayette feel like home
The relationships I’ve built at Lafayette and the special moments I’ve been able to share with people who mean a lot to me made Lafayette a place where I felt safe and was able to find comfort in new spaces
welcoming community makes it easy to make friends
Whenever I leave my room—whether to go to the library
or Lower Farinon—I almost always run into someone I know and strike up a conversation or go on a little adventure
It’s those unplanned moments that make Lafayette the welcoming place that it is
and why a little piece of my heart will live in Easton forever.” –Ronnie Ward ’25 (government and law
“Lafayette felt most like home when I became a LEO (orientation leader and first-year mentor) in my senior year and found an entirely new community
and genuinely kind—reminded me how powerful it is to belong to a community bigger than yourself
As I guided wide-eyed first-years through their earliest moments on campus
I was reminded of my own awe during those first few days and how deeply I had come to know and love this place
I realized just how much Lafayette had become home for me
That unexpected sense of renewal and connection in my final year was both grounding and unforgettable.” –Lily Kubany ’25 (government and law
“Reflecting on my entire Lafayette journey
it’s impossible to pinpoint one particular experience that made this campus feel like home
I spent so much time pursuing the things I love and made countless memories that I will cherish forever
but those moments were made special by the people I was with
and genuinely cared for by the people on this campus—peers
and staff alike—made Lafayette feel like home
Even on days when I felt exhausted or overwhelmed
friendly face in passing and checking in with them always lifted my spirits
reminding me that I was surrounded by an incredibly supportive community
cultivating my deep sense of belonging here at Lafayette.” –Shreya Suresh ’25 (neuroscience
“The Landis Center for Community Engagement will always feel like home to me
As a first-year participant in the Pre-Orientation Service Program (POSP)
diving into community engagement was exactly what I needed to ease my nerves—and it led to friendships that will last a lifetime
Through the Landis Center and Making Our Society an Inclusive Community (MOSAIC)
my sense of ‘home’ has also extended off campus
especially through my volunteer work at Gracedale Nursing Home
The relationships I’ve built with the staff and residents there mean the world to me
The Landis Center will always remind me of the ‘home’ I’ve found at Lafayette—and how that home stretches far beyond campus.” –Grace Comfort ’25 (psychology
On-campus finalists for the 2025 George Wharton Pepper Prize attended the annual Cord and Sword Ceremony
a new tradition that includes the Marquis de Lafayette’s sword—one of Lafayette College’s most prized artifacts
The event began with a brief introduction and acknowledgment of Ana Ramirez Luhrs
co-director of Special Collections and College Archives
Each finalist was called alphabetically to receive their cord and hold the sword
“The colors of the cords—antique gold and white—represent the Pepper Prize winner and the cohort
and the sword—seen as a revolutionary symbol—represents each individual’s significant contributions to the College community,” shared Tim Cox
dean of advising and co-curricular programs
only the Pepper Prize winner had an opportunity to present the class to the sword,” said Cox
“The Cord and Sword Ceremony will become a new tradition that recognizes all Pepper Prize finalists in an inclusive way
Having this ceremony together allows the finalists to bond through a shared experience and recognize each individual as someone who embodies the Lafayette ideal.”

(Lafayette, Louisiana)—On a rainy Saturday night
as I sat in the passenger seat of our vehicle
I couldn't help but notice that Lafayette has a major issue with some of its roadways
As we were driving toward downtown Lafayette on Congress Street
I saw a few vehicles having trouble navigating along the roadway
my wife was driving across the slippery road in Lafayette
and she too started to drift into the lane parallel to us
she couldn't see the lines on the road
Some of the roads in Lafayette need to have the lines painted again
You can't see the lines on the road to help navigate you
In addition to the faded lines on the roads in the city
a lot of the reflectors are no longer present
When it snowed this past winter in Lafayette
crews used tractors to remove snow from the roadways
and many of the reflectors were scraped off the roads
I do recall the state of Louisiana saying that they would address the missing reflectors on the roads after the winter storm
and it is becoming difficult to travel some roads at night or when it's raining

Although the olive loaf is similar to Italian mortadella, sliced sausage meat with cubes of pork fat, this former American favorite deli meat is a mixture of pork, chicken, and beef with whole green olives. In recent years, the olive loaf has been associated with more popular cuts like bologna and is not typical to find on mainstream grocery store shelves.

Munsell spent over 10,000 hours mastering how businesses can use AI to achieve extraordinary results
His company’s began as a web development firm and become a digital marketing agency and
A pivotal conversation with colleague Jared Allardyce prompted him to sell off his prior business holdings and focus exclusively on the emerging opportunities in AI
Munsell then committed himself to studying how AI could genuinely solve market problems
“We had been using AI and I thought this was going to be the next frontier,” he said
we shifted to try to figure out what problem the market wanted solved with AI
“So I spent a year studying that and had this thing called the CXO AI roundtable
where every Friday I would teach various C levels what I was doing in certain aspects of AI
I would analyze AI note takers or I would analyze different AI tools
And eventually I figured out what the problem was that the market wanted solved.”
