Senior Jonte Flowers scores two of his 17 points for host Madison La Follette in a 75-61 win against Madison Memorial on Jan
is shown with Madison La Follette Lancers teammates who won the WIAA Division I state title in 2002
defends against eventual NBA star Stephen Curry in a Sweet 16 game that Davidson went on to win in 2008
Jonte Flowers was part of a trio of brothers who helped LaFollette High School win a state basketball championship
He then won two titles in college and one as a pro
Basketball was Jonte Flowers’ vehicle to a state championship at Madison La Follette High School and two NCAA Division II titles at Winona State
Basketball was his passport to see the world while playing professionally in Sweden
Lithuania and Poland during an 11-season span
Basketball was his ticket to the Madison Sports Hall of Fame
the 40-year-old Flowers will be inducted June 4 at Monona Terrace
who couldn’t be prouder of the path that he has traveled in basketball
Especially since it involved a true brotherhood from the beginning
Jonte was the second youngest of five boys separated by six years
Marques was the oldest followed in order by Jerome
Competition was at the heart of everything
Jonte Flowers remembered how competitive family reunions could be when a pickup basketball game would inevitably break out
But there’s no limit on the storytelling at such gatherings
Or debating whatever is happening in the NBA
“We love to talk basketball," Jonte confirmed
La Follette alums still love to talk about the 2002 WIAA Division I state championship game
Jason Flowers was battling the flu but still came up with big plays and a clutch free throw
sealing the victory while complementing his brothers Jonte and Michael
Jonte was a junior and Michael was a sophomore
“We always had a way of pushing each other when it came to competition and wanting to get better
we did set a goal to win a state championship and then for it to come true
that’s a special memory and bond by itself."
La Follette returned to the state tournament but lost in the quarterfinals to Milwaukee King
“We were trying to be the best version of ourselves we could be."
Jonte Flowers was also first-team All-State in football
He had 37 catches for 683 yards and eight touchdowns
The University of Wisconsin football program saw enough in the 6-4
170-pound Jonte Flowers to extend a preferred walk-on invitation to play wide receiver
I would go to the gym at 9 o’clock at night and play basketball
“It was a great fit from the beginning," he said
Winona State defeated Virginia Union for the title
Two of Flowers’ former La Follette teammates
“We worked hard and we grinded," said Flowers
Winona State got on a roll and won 57 straight games over the two seasons before losing to Barton on a buzzer-beater in the 2007 Division II finals
“It was surreal," Flowers said of the streak
You started to play not to lose instead of just playing the game."
Winona State led Barton 74-67 with 45 seconds left
it was very heartbreaking," Flowers lamented
“But it was kind of a lesson learned: The game is not over until the final whistle
“It was definitely the motivation going into the off-season and the summer
I kind of took it to another level in terms of working on my individual game
Flowers scored 25 of his 30 points in the second half and Winona State erased a 16-point deficit to win the championship against Augusta State
Flowers was a first-team All-American and ended his four-year career with 1,882 points
More noteworthy were his 414 career steals
“I always thank my older brothers for that," Flowers said
I was always one of the smallest on the court so it wasn’t easy to get the basketball
We played full-court pressure defense trying to create turnovers."
Flowers embarked on his international career highlighted by two championships in Romania
What was memorable about that title was that Flowers ruptured his Achilles tendon early in the season and had surgery
Yet he looks back with fondness on his overseas career
His daughter was born in France and his son raised for a year in Italy
he was inducted into the Winona State Hall of Fame
he was selected for the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Hall of Fame
where she's the athletic director at Southwest Minnesota State University
Jennifer spent three years as the commissioner of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association
“She’s very good at what she does," Jonte said
Although he has tried to remain competitive by playing basketball in a men’s league
Flowers admitted to cutting back and slowing down a little
Besides overseeing his own basketball training program for kids of all ages
he’s teaching at the middle school level after a stint in real estate
There are still people who believe Jonte Flowers and Michael Flowers could have been successful college football players at wide receiver and quarterback
“We’ve had conversations every now and then about that," Jonte said
“It’s always fun to talk about the what if
But things turned out the way things were meant to be."
Michael joined the Wisconsin basketball program and went on to an outstanding career
Michael Flowers was a defensive specialist (sound familiar?) on a UW team that won the Big Ten regular season and tournament championships
The Badgers won 31 games and advanced to the Sweet 16 only to lose to Davidson
whose meal ticket was a sophomore guard by the name of Curry
Pondering the prospect of teaming up together collegiately
“It would have been cool if we would have stayed on the same campus."
It will be equally cool someday when Michael Flowers joins Jonte Flowers in the Madison Sports Hall of Fame

LaFollette self-produced its tracks at The Culture House
The making of Liturgical Songs Volume One was accompanied by big changes in LaFollette’s personal life: the joys of a new family and the sudden death of both of his parents in 2024
that include a full spectrum of our reality can heal us.“ The arresting He Does mirrors a conversation with someone in the tumult of grief

Even silence is extremely powerful when it is shared.” The record is a full band production with folk-leaning textures
organic elements throughout are thoughtfully complemented with imaginative
