the halal eatery prepares for a grand reopening once again
Mint will welcome diners back to its remodeled dining room with a complimentary glass of nonalcoholic champagne
Located at 25381 Alicia Pkwy, Unit C in Laguna Hills, Mint is a sister concept to Michelin-recognized Khan Saab Desi Craft Kitchen in Fullerton and SHOR Bazaar in Hawaiian Gardens, led by head chef Jamil Hosseini, under the direction of chef Imran Ali Mookhi.
“The family started Mint in 2016, and it was just a small mom and pop restaurant until we took over the space next door,” said Mookhi. “So we expanded it. Then in 2020 we opened Khan Saab, and we were blessed that Khan Saab became so successful. We decided to remodel Mint and bring it to that level as well.”
Jewel tones, metallic fixtures and velour seating have been added to the interior of Mint Desi Craft Cuisine. (Courtesy of Mint Desi Craft Cuisine) The dining room was remodeled, but just a couple weeks ahead of the reopening, firefighters responded to reports of smoke on the early morning of May 5 coming from an electrical fire that had broken out in Mint’s kitchen.
“It was sad because the whole family was attached to the restaurant because that was the first one. We also never had to deal with anything like this in the past,” said Mookhi.
The team placed staff at their sister concepts and focused on rebuilding Mint.
“The whole process took about three years to get it done with the city, with the fire inspection and the insurance and all that,” said Mookhi.
Mint has been soft-open since the holidays, allowing the staff to get back into the swing of dinner service.

(Courtesy of Mint Desi Craft Cuisine) The menu features halal Indian and Pakistani dishes, all intended for family-style dining. Classics like masala rub French-cut lamb chops and traditional curries like chicken tikka masala are popular. Creative appetizers include bandar buns, popover-like buns baked in a cast-iron pot and served with a sweet and spicy mango chutney.
The restaurant group has also become known for its biryani, a mixed rice dish that can be made with chicken, goat, lamb or beef. Mint also uses charred market vegetables and Thai chilles to make a vegetable biryani. Goat karahi is also a favorite, with the braised meat served in a traditional karahi wok bubbling in spiced tomato sauce and fried chilies when it arrives at the table.
“It’s incredibly gratifying to reopen Mint finally,” Hosseini said in statement. “These past few years have certainly brought a few setbacks, but the community’s excitement and encouragement have made all the hard work worthwhile.”
The original design has been redone with jewel tones, wood accents and velour seating. Leather directors’ chairs face a rustic brick wall where black-and-white Bollywood movies are projected.
Also in keeping with the halal tradition, Mint has an alcohol-free bar program led by mixologist Ahmad Hosseini. Diners can order imported 0.0% craft brews and nonalcoholic mimosas in flavors like lychee, mango and blood orange.
Hosseini has developed a craft cocktail menu with thoughtful beverages like a “Falsa-tini” made with Grewia asiatica pulp or a “Honey Dew Me” with honeydew melon, Seedlip Garden 108, basil and lime that drinks like a midori sour.
A nonalcoholic “falsa-tini” at Mint made with Grewia asiatica pulp and black salt. (Courtesy of Mint Desi Craft Cuisine) “The nonalcoholic bar was such a hit for us at Khan Saab we decided to extend that to Shor and Mint,” said Mookhi.
On the evening of the grand reopening, 10% of the proceeds will benefit NAMI Orange County, a local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
“We’re eager to welcome former regulars and new guests back into our space,” Hosseini said.
Mookhi is eager as well, since the reopening of Mint means he can focus on the restaurant group’s next opening: Kabana in Huntington Beach.
“The concept at Kabana it is a little different than what we have done at the other three restaurants. It is more of comfort Pakistani food,” Mookhi said.
Kabana, slated to open later this year, will be a quick-serve-style eatery with a nonalcoholic bar, a chai tasting experience and hookah.

The striking Chet Holifield Federal Building was constructed in Laguna Niguel
Pereira & Associates designed the building
General Services Administration’s (GSA) inventory
The building has a remarkable stepped pyramid silhouette that is rare in American architecture
The building was originally constructed for Rockwell International
a multifaceted company that worked in the manufacturing arena for defense and space industries
Rockwell never occupied the building; the company no longer required it after a defense contract that it was relying on never came to fruition
The company offered to trade the building to the federal government in exchange for three surplus government facilities of equal value
Pereira (1909-1985) was an American architect who designed futuristic
His best-known building is San Francisco’s Transamerica Pyramid
He designed Los Angeles Airport’s Theme Building and completed master plans for the cities of Irvine and Newport Beach
He also worked briefly as a Hollywood art director
sharing an Academy Award for Best Special Effects for the film Reap the Wild Wind in 1942
Pereira is credited with more than 400 projects and his stylish yet efficient architecture had a tremendous impact on California from the 1950s through the 1980s
the building was rededicated in honor of Congressman Chet Holifield (1903-1995)
who Represented California’s 19th District from 1943 to 1974
Holifield was a Congressional adviser on nuclear weapons testing and disarmament and atomic energy
The building’s unique form has been featured in several films
In 2020, GSA began planning to transfer the building out of federal ownership. An interactive virtual tour was developed in 2025 as mitigation under the National Historic Preservation Act. GSA invites everyone to visit and learn about the Chet Holifield Federal Building and it’s history.
The sculptural Chet Holifield Federal Building is skillfully executed in a stepped pyramidal form that has a similar appearance to ancient ziggurats
Pereira developed the unified design that is unparalleled in the federal government
A large portion of the more than one million square foot building is below grade
It is located on a 92-acre parcel of land in Laguna Niguel
and approximately 4 miles from the Pacific coastline
The building has seven tiers and is constructed of angled
pre-cast concrete panels with reticulation
a textured finish that displays curvilinear forms
The building displays some characteristics of the Brutalist style of Modern architecture
expansive wall planes; and recessed windows
The building has a concrete frame and the lateral force-resisting system consists of concrete shearwalls and single-level concrete moment frames
It was constructed on spread footings and caissons
which are separated by slanting concrete walls with triangular forms
are recessed between the horizontal levels
Evenly spaced windows provide a consistent rhythm to the symmetrical building
The top tier of the building has a large flat roof with attached protruding vertical elements
providing additional texture to the structure
referencing the overall shape of the building
A moat of smooth rocks surrounds the building on three sides
alluding to the idea that the massive structure is a modern-day fortress
symmetrical plaza is located outside of the main entrance
and planters greet visitors and provide contrast to the massive concrete structure
more than 2,500 trees and 6,500 shrubs were included in the initial landscape plan
Concrete benches echo the materials and form of the building
both escalators and elevators provide high-speed vertical movement
Pereira’s efficient interior circulation system allowed for a maximum travel time of approximately five minutes between any two points in the building
Select walls are covered in wood paneling and some areas contain wooden slat ceilings
Portions of the interior were redesigned by GSA to accommodate increased office space
Other buildings on the site include a maintenance warehouse; 500,000-gallon water tank that services the fire protection system; energy plant
cooling tower; a 1,000,000-gallon thermal energy storage tank; and security buildings
A heliport is located on the site and additional landscaped areas are found throughout the large parcel
which radiate diagonally along the building axes
in anticipation of the thousands of employees that were to occupy the facility
state-of-the-art upgrades and modifications to the roofing were completed as part of an energy-saving plan that saves $650,000 per year in utility costs
critical to efficient circulation in the building

Print Orange County native Anna Wassman-Cox always knew ballet could spark joy
But it wasn’t until the two-time breast cancer survivor came back to dance after battling her illness that she realized ballet could heal
Wassman-Cox is the founder and executive director of the Irvine-based Onco-Ballet Foundation
a nonprofit dedicated to providing free or low-cost ballet classes to the cancer community in order to “spark joy
facilitate healing and foster self-expression.”
“I created this ballet class that is super modifiable and approachable for anybody in the cancer community
to help them really tune out from what is going on around them while they are going through cancer and tune back into their bodies,” said Wassman-Cox
Wassman-Cox was 25 years old when she was first diagnosed with breast cancer
She experienced a recurrence at the age of 29
she found herself drawn back to her most familiar form of expression
you can’t always put everything in words,” said Wassman-Cox
“Dance is that way to express yourself without having to speak.”
2025 Onco-Ballet Teacher Cohort at V&T Classical Ballet & Dance Academy in Laguna Hills for a two-day workshop
(Courtesy of Onco-Ballet Foundation) Getting back to the barre inspired her to help other people to learn to use the discipline of ballet to feel strong again and regain confidence
By modifying true ballet techniques into chair ballet
or modifying movements for breast cancer survivors like herself who no longer have the same range of motion lifting their arms above their heads
she is creating a way for women to focus on what their bodies can do
“Our classes are structured where we make parts of it consistent so it’s the same every single time
That way they can build up that confidence and reach those goals,” said Wassman-Cox
Ballet also brings in a level of whimsy for those who practiced it as young girls — or wanted to
“It brings in that nostalgia and beauty aspect because who doesn’t want to feel like they are that ballerina they always dreamed of being?”
Since Wassman-Cox founded the Onco-Ballet Foundation in 2024
the organization has hosted classes locally at Hoag Hospital and in Chicago at Rush University Medical Center
It has also partnered with Movement Pointe for events
Onco-Ballet held its inaugural teacher training event
hosting aspiring dance teachers at V&T Classical Ballet & Dance Academy in Laguna Hills for a two-day workshop
“Anytime I shared with people what we were doing or had new people come to class that had a dance background
they always expressed interest in wanting to help to teach,” said Wassman-Cox
She organized a cohort of 15 instructors with dance backgrounds
Seattle and California to learn the unique Onco-Ballet curriculum
“Forty percent of the attendees were cancer survivors themselves and 26% had been either caregivers or had someone very close to them go through cancer,” said Wassman-Cox
Anna Wassman-Cox leads introductions with future Onco-Ballet teachers
(Courtesy of Onco-Ballet Foundation) While Wassman-Cox is an expert on curriculum
she tapped two other women as guest trainers to round out the workshop with additional knowledge
Director of the Creative Dance Center in Seattle Terry Goetz joined the training as did Marie Miao
an oncology clinical social worker and EMDR-certified therapist at the Hoag Family Cancer Institute and Kokoro Wellness
“Marie brought in a whole series on trauma-informed ballet teaching for dancers with cancer,” said Wassman-Cox
“So that was wonderful to hear from a clinical stand point
how do you work with people who have faced trauma?”
Goetz is an expert on BrainDance and Brain-Compatible Dance Education
a teaching philosophy that takes a holistic approach to becoming a skilled dancer
having that brain-body connection,” said Wassman-Cox
The plan is for the teachers to take Onco-Ballet back to their communities where it can help cancer survivors promote movement and find emotional healing
“This training is just one step in building a national network of instructors who will empower even more individuals affected by cancer through the joy of ballet.”
Another way Wassman-Cox is working to spread the word of the Onco-Ballet Foundation is through an upcoming performance planned for Oct. 19 at the Irvine Barclay Theater. The special performance will celebrate the strength of cancer patients and survivors and explore ballet as movement therapy
“We will have an all cancer patient and survivor cast and maybe even some caregivers on stage,” said Wassman-Cox
“We really see this as an educational showcase to share the cancer experience through dance and help educate our audience about cancer advocacy and the therapeutic benefits of ballet.”
Wassman-Cox knows other survivors can find healing the way she did and the ways she has seen it in her classes
“Even just the simplicity of cueing them to stand tall and breath has brought people to tears,” said Wassman-Cox
“It is bringing them back into their bodies
and it’s so meaningful to see how happy it makes people.”
