The aging split-level that occupied this lot in Lake Barcroft wasn’t much of a looker, but the couple who bought it knew they’d stumbled upon a rarity in this real estate market: waterfront property. They hired Falls Church architect Charles Moore to maneuver a whole-house remodel
that maximizes views of the serene lake in back
“The most spectacular spot in the house is the master bedroom ‘cube’ perched high above the property,” says Moore, who worked with senior associate Jill Gilliand and Falls Church builder GN Contracting to rethink and reorient the home’s primary forms
Though the street-facing front facade still maintains a low profile
the rear of the residence achieves some serious vertical
sloping yard that drops 46 feet down to the lake’s edge
enjoying unobstructed views of water and woods
“Floor-to-ceiling windows [on two sides] create a wonderful connection and transparency to the outdoors,” Moore says
Maple wood floors and a floating walnut wall partition behind the bed complete the aesthetic
Speaking of that handsome wall partition—it also serves a secondary purpose
To avoid cluttering the view with dressers and other furniture
extra storage and a dressing area behind it
Clerestory windows wrap the space on all sides
channeling natural light inside during the day
Motorized solar blinds hidden inside a wide valance can be lowered to block the morning sun and prevent unwanted heat gain
“The floor elevation of the master bedroom is approximately 66 feet above the water level of the lake,” Moore says

Lake Barcroft is a neighborhood in Falls Church with over 1000 homes. One out of four of these homes are actually on the lake. The lake used to be a reservoir for the City of Alexandria but was converted into a freshwater recreational lake
Lake Barcroft is a CDP (Census Designated Place) and was developed in the 1950’s by the mid-century Architect Walter Gropius
He wanted to create a “nursery for children” with gorgeous landscaping and front yard barbeque pits
the prices here can get well into the $2M’s
But you can find homes a couple streets off the water in the $800,000’s – under $1M
Lake Barcroft is exclusively single family
The architectural styles vary but mostly consist of Mid Century homes
There are so many gorgeous homes on and off the lake
so even if a lakefront home is not in your budget
you can still take full advantage of the lake lifestyle and own a home here
The one thing to be prepared for as a buyer in this community are the varying levels of renovation and condition of the homes
Many of the homes we see hit the market in Lake Barcroft are dated and in need of a partial or full renovation
Many of the homeowners have lived in this neighborhood for decades and their homes can be time capsules of the original house
Depending on condition and your personal style
many homes may need moderate to extensive renovations if you want a home with more up to date features
You will need to be prepared to take on a project or be ready for a smaller inventory pool to choose from during your search
you will find a really cool home that will suit your needs
Lake Barcroft is more dependent on Seven Corners and Bailey’s Crossroads for restaurants and grocery shopping. Because of its proximity to Falls Church City, Arlington
there are many more options if you are okay with driving out of the immediate area
Seven Corners and Bailey’s Crossroads offer a wide variety of cuisines and restaurants so you will definitely not have to eat the same thing every night or every week
The restaurants and eateries range from deli counters inside of markets to stand alone restaurants
Grocery stores in this area include Trader Joes
Safeway and other smaller markets like the German Grocer
Two of our favorite places to eat in the area are Little Saigon and The Great Greek Mediterranean Grill
Lake Barcroft has five private beaches where you can swim or use various watercraft. The association has an annual fee of $495/year for use of the amenities
When the community was originally developed
getting back in takes an act of Lake Barcroft
which is harder to achieve than an act of Congress
So make sure if you buy here that your house is included in the association
you are trespassing and can be fined by the Fairfax County Police
The sense of community here is very inclusive
The Lake Barcroft Association hosts many events throughout the year to include Art League’s “Art
Music & Food Festival,” the Fourth of July Fireworks
If you are a newcomer to the neighborhood
they have the Newcomers Group which hosts events to help newcomers get to know the neighborhood and their new neighbors
there is the Lake Barcroft Boat Sharing Program
It helps to facilitate boat sharing among neighbors in the community and serves as a great social club with fellow boaters
Residents of Lake Barcroft will send their children to one of the three elementary schools based on where they live
Sleepy Hollow Elementary is a K-5 Title 1 School that offers advanced Fairfax County’s Level 4 academics
which is advanced classes in the 4 core subjects

(Updated at 4 p.m.) A man was taken into custody around midnight after a roughly seven-hour-long police barricade at a Lake Barcroft condominium building
The Fairfax County Police Department tweeted at 5:17 p.m. yesterday (Tuesday) that its officers were on the scene in the 3300 block of Rio Drive in response to a brandishing incident
where a man with a rifle was seen on a fifth-level apartment balcony “shouting threats.”
“The man was shouting threats to shoot and kill people walking outside the apartment balcony,” the FCPD said in a summary today (Wednesday)
“Officers began clearing the surrounding area and attempted to negotiate with the man to exit the apartment
The man disregarded officers’ commands and remained inside the apartment by himself.”
Residents of the Barcroft Hills (3245 Rio Drive) and Lafayette Park condos (6147 Leesburg Pike) were directed to shelter in place, while police negotiated with the man, who had moved inside the apartment. Police said they believed he was alone
The fourth, fifth, and sixth floors of Barcroft Hills were evacuated, Annandale Today reported last night
quoting a resident who said they had been unable to return home for hours due to the lockdown
crisis negotiators and officers from its Special Operations Division spent more then four hours trying to communicate with the man
but the negotiation attempts ultimately failed
leading SOD officers to deploy “projectiles containing pepper spray.”
The FCPD says the man was taken into custody after he exited the apartment at 11:55 p.m.
at which point residents were allowed to back into their buildings
“The man was taken to a nearby hospital for further mental health evaluation,” the department said
“He was also treated for injuries that were not considered life threatening.”
Officers continue to negotiate w/the man to peacefully resolve this situation
Those within the apartment complex are asked to follow police direction

“My son will probably be over on the weekend and maybe we’ll get a saw.”
Leventhal noted that several roads were closed when he tried to get home Thursday from all of the damage left behind by the storm

An 83-year-old woman is recovering from minor injuries after being attacked by a rabid beaver at Lake Barcroft on Tuesday night
which is surrounded by homes in the Bailey's Crossroads area
“Never in the world did I expect anything like this,” says Lillian Peterson
Two fishermen on the water heard Peterson's screams and came to her aid
The beaver never loosened its grip on Peterson
After she got to shore one of the fishermen hit it with a plank
It's got me it's pulling me under,’” says Lake Barcroft resident Mike Korin
Peterson is a fit 83 but she needed every bit of strength to stay afloat while under attack by a rabid enraged animal
Peterson almost lost a thumb and suffered serious injuries to her arm and leg
“I just kept hitting it with my walking stick trying to hit it in the eyes,” she says
she is recovering and will undergo a round of rabies shots
Police say Peterson was treated for non-life threatening injuries at Inova Fairfax Hospital
Fairfax County Police officials said that the beaver tested positive for the rabies virus
rabies is spread through the saliva of an infected animal and can attack the spinal cord and brain of humans and other warm-blooded animals
People who are infected may not present symptoms until several weeks after being bitten
There is no known cure for rabies, officials say. The Fairfax County Police Department has provided more information about the virus here

Northern Virginia is in hot demand (the population of Arlington County alone has grown by 12 percent over the past decade)
but certain neighborhoods are especially prone to scouting visits from would-be homebuyers
When Daphne and Aras Butas were looking to upgrade from their condo in Courthouse in 2007
if they were going to stay in Northern Virginia
he would only buy a house in the place where he grew up—Lake Barcroft in Falls Church
As an agent with Century 21 Redwood Realty in Arlington
“Lake Barcroft is kind of a hidden secret,” Aras says
alluding to the fact that his boyhood neighborhood offers something that other spots inside the Beltway can’t: waterfront living
life in Lake Barcroft revolves around the nearly 100-year-old
Used only by residents who pay an annual fee and their guests
it offers five beaches and multiple common areas
a Lake Barcroft homeowner and an agent with Long & Foster in Falls Church
calls it “an oasis of calm in our very hectic lives.” Houses here are larger and frequently on bigger lots than Arlington homes listed at the same price point
and yet the lake is only seven miles from D.C
“There is no other neighborhood in the area where a resident can enjoy swimming
stand-up paddleboarding and great fishing,” Aras says
chili cook-offs and an annual Fourth of July fireworks display
natural outdoor learning classroom for our children—there is just nothing like it,” says Daphne Butas
“I like growing up in the same place with my family where my husband did 30 years ago as a kid himself
I like that every house looks different…and that all the people want to support the lake and the wonderful experiences it has to offer us.”

FALLS CHURCH, VA (July 25, 16) – A $1.56 million Lake Barcroft home located at 3431 Greentree Drive has just been listed by Ken Trotter of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage’s Arlington Regional office
the French Provincial style home includes four bedrooms
two-and-one-half-bathrooms and a private dock on the lake
“Many of the homes in this neighborhood are a mid-century modern design
so this one really stands out as an example of French architecture,” said Ken Trotter
the property is being sold by the original owners who custom-built the home
none of the other homes on Lake Barcroft are situated as close to the water’s edge as this one
The home’s European-inspired architecture is reflected in its brick exterior
fleur-de-lis window embellishments and Juliet balcony with leaded glass doors
Given its location next to the water and French design
the home is evocative of a European lakeside villa
Additional spaces of the residence include an office or fifth bedroom and a sunroom
A newly remodeled kitchen features granite counters
a breakfast bar and windows overlooking the water
Each of the bathrooms has been remodeled with granite counters
A balcony is situated just off the living room with views of the water
Multi-level patios and balconies offer plenty of options to view the lake and are surrounded with manicured landscaping
With just over one-third of an acre of property
the residence is a quiet retreat in an intimate setting

There must be something magical in the water at J.E.B
The Falls Church-area school is where Oscar-winning producer Bruce Cohen
Oscar-winning actress Julianne Moore and film director Tom Shadyac all went to school in the ‘70s
“We were all friends in high school so it’s pretty funny that we all ended up having successful careers in the movie business,” Cohen said Tuesday in a phone interview with Patch. Cohen returns to Northern Virginia this weekend from Los Angeles to accept the inaugural Metropolitan Award from the Washington West Film Festival in Reston
(Cohen and Moore are helping students with their efforts to try to change the Confederate name of the school.)
Cohen’s career includes a Best Picture Oscar win for American Beauty
as well as Best Picture nominations for Milk and Silver Linings Playbook
and was executive producer of the ABC series Pushing Daisies
which won a total of seven Emmys and received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Comedy
Cohen will accept his award and highlight favorite clips and moments of his impressive career and give an insider’s look into the producing experience
(Check the film festival Web site for tickets; all proceeds go to charity.)
“We are proud to bestow Northern Virginia native and Oscar-Winning producer Bruce Cohen with our inaugural Metropolitan Award
given to a world class filmmaker from greater Washington DC whose exceptional artistry and influence is the pride of the metropolitan region,” said Brad Russell
Cohen’s dreams of a film career started at home
in his Lake Barcroft neighborhood in the Falls Church area
That’s where he grew up with his sister Julie (also a producer
it was very exciting for me to be so close to Washington
“I’ve been sort of a political junkie since I was a kid...I think a lot of it had to do with growing up there
I remember my mom let me stay home to watch the Watergate hearings in junior high school because I was so interested in it and she had a feeling that I would learn way more watching the hearings than I would that week at school
“One of my really vivid memories was when ‘Star Wars’ opened
I was a freshman at Stuart and I remember going to the State Theater in Falls Church that Friday night and seeing “Star Wars’ and thinking it was just the best thing ever,” said Cohen
“I think people had a sense that opening day
that it was going to change things in a lot of ways.”
The producer of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” debuting in December
She and her husband Frank Marshall were the producers of “The Color Purple,” the first film that Cohen ever worked on
They became producing mentors of Cohen’s afterward
“They were kind of the reason why I decided I wanted to be a producer and they’ve been my producing mentors for all these years,” he said
When Cohen graduated from Yale in 1983 with a film degree
he wasn’t sure exactly what he wanted to do in the film industry
He moved to Los Angeles and spent the first 10 years of his career working as an assistant director
Cohen said he had no fallback plan if he didn’t make it in the industry
He got into a training program for assistant directors and worked on the hit TV show
“Hill Street Blues.” His first film production experience was working on ”The Color Purple” with Steven Spielberg
where his decision to keep his head down and work hard resulted in the director eventually noticing him
which led to many more jobs working with Spielberg
“Each film or TV program is really like its own business that is formed to produce that particular show,” Cohen said
“And the producer is the CEO of the business
You’re in charge of every aspect of the production
And you’re in charge of that from when it’s first an idea all the way to the time when it makes it onto the screen or onto your TV set or onto the stage.”
For students today interested in breaking into the film industry
Cohen says “that the interest in the film industry as a career has exploded
and so there are tremendous opportunities as far as education goes.” But he notes a liberal arts background is a good beginning
“Ultimately what we are is story tellers,” Cohen said
So I actually feel like in many ways a liberal arts education might actually serve you better than just focusing on film and only taking film classes
the more well-rounded citizen of the world you are
the more access you’re going to have to great ideas and for people to bring you great ideas that could end up becoming film and TV programs.”
Cohen won the Best Picture Oscar as a producer for “American Beauty” at the 72nd Academy Awards
He is currently working on bringing a film about legendary comedian Richard Pryor to life with filming likely beginning in the spring with Lee Daniels as director and Mike Epps in the title role
Others reported to have roles in the film are Kate Hudson
