Lake Fenton — The Lake Fenton varsity girls soccer team was probably already out of the Flint Metro League race before the Blue Devils faced off against the Fenton Tigers
so why not try to spoil their league title ambitions
In a game that Fenton had more scoring chances than Lake Fenton
earning the squad a much deserved 0-0 draw against Fenton
If there was a side that could look at the draw as a “moral victory” it was the Blue Devils
Fenton (6-3-2 overall) fell to 5-1-1 in Metro action and are going to need massive help to catch first-place Goodrich (7-0-0) and second-place Flushing (6-1-0) to contend for the crown now
Lake Fenton (4-5-1 overall) also defeated Clio 8-1 on Wednesday
Lake Fenton’s defensive work against Fenton wasn’t that much of a surprise
as the squad has gotten progressively better as the season has progressed
After allowing 23 goals during a four-game losing streak to start the season
Lake Fenton (3-5-1 overall) has held four of it last five opponents to two or less goals
The clean sheet was the Blue Devils’ second of the season
Lake Fenton keeper Sydney Hooker earned the clean sheet
Laura Bell also spent a few minutes in net and made maybe the best save of the night in her time between the pipes
Fenton keeper Lilah Moore also earned a clean sheet
“I thought our defense played very well tonight,” Lake Fenton varsity girls soccer coach John Hunter said
We didn’t give them a lot of support early on as we were working on our transition game from them to our attack.”
“I’m lucky that I have two three-year starters — Sami Bridenstine and Emily Urmanic — along with one two-year starter — captain Ella Dye — on that back line
Fenton (6-3-2 overall) had more shots for certain and controlled the ball for larger portions of the contest
but the Tigers seemed to lack the sting they’ve had recently on the offensive side of the ball
the Tigers had scored 35 goals in their last five Metro League contests
Hannah Converse had five goals and also took a corner kick that ended up being an own-goal
Mady Teffner had one goal and four assists while Miley Urmanic had a goal
Jill Peraino and Kaylee Glower had an assist each while Bell made four saves in net

The Lake Fenton Theatre (LFT)is in the midst of their hilarious comedy “Noises Off” with performances taking place from Thursday
LFT brings the curtain down on its season with a fitting finale full of laughter in “Noises Off.” This uproarious backstage farce takes center stage at the company’s home
Thursdays and weekends from April 24 – May 4
“Noises Off” is presented by an arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc. www.concordtheatricals.com
“Many people in the theater describe ‘Noises Off’ as a perfect comedy play,” said director Brenda LaBonte
“It is such a fun look into theatrical life behind the scenes
It invites us to watch the increasingly silly behavior of a group of people putting on a play and shows what will happen when everything that can possibly go wrong does indeed go wrong
It finds the humor in the absurd and the delight in watching people do their best to complete the task at hand under impossible circumstances
it creates a lot of opportunity to laugh and enjoy an evening of live entertainment with friends.”
Featuring a dynamic mix of beloved LFT veterans and exciting new talent
the cast of “Noises Off” is ready to deliver door-slamming
This sidesplitting romp takes you behind the scenes as one hilariously dysfunctional cast stumbles through rehearsals
opening night jitters and several escalating disasters
sardines fly and love triangles tangle as this award-winning farce sneaks a hysterical backstage peek at a production that teeters on the precipice of pandemonium and tests the limits of the adage “the show must go on.”
Tickets are available at the door one half hour before curtain

MI - The Lake Fenton Community Schools bond proposal has been voted down
with 52.87% of voters rejecting the measure
according to unofficial results from the county Clerk’s Office
The proposal sought approval to borrow up to $68.25 million for various projects
and developing athletic and recreational facilities
Related: Live: Genesee County election results for Nov. 5, 2024
The bond would have been financed through a millage levy of 3.2 mills
which represented a 2.36-mill net increase over the previous year’s levy
The funds would have been issued in one or more series and could have remained outstanding for up to 30 years
The school district had estimated an average annual millage of 3.1 mills required to retire the debt
Lake Fenton Community Schools is still responsible for $7.525 million in outstanding qualified bonds
but the rejected bond measure will not affect the funding for repairs
as those proceeds were required to undergo auditing

Lake Fenton sophomore Laureena Baehl was named Flint-area Athlete of the Week for April 14-20.Todd Wilkinson
.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Jonathan Szczepaniak | jszczepaniak@mlive.comFLINT - When Laureena Baehl burst onto the scene in 2024 and became the Blue Devils’ everyday catcher
it was no surprise to Lake Fenton head coach Todd Wilkinson
Wilkinson had seen what Baehl could do since she was mashing baseballs as a middle schooler
but her talent has only grown since she stepped onto the varsity scene
“The first thing that I noticed when I first met her was the way the ball came off the bat,” Wilkinson said
it just jumped off the bat with her power.”
Baehl earned herself a spot on our most recent Flint-area Athlete of the Week poll
earning 13,105 votes and running away with first place to win Flint-area Athlete of the Week honors for April 14-20
Baehl took over behind the backstop as a freshman and posted an offensive slash line of .357/.425/.518 last year with nine doubles
“She hit the ground running,” Wilkinson said
Baehl has already launched seven home runs with an offensive slash line of .478/.554/1.022 and a 1.576 OPS
and she’s already tied her RBI total from last season
She’s your traditional power-hitting catcher
but she’s just as stout defensively as she is offensively
and she’s got an absolute cannon for an arm.”
Baehl was a second-team all-league honoree in the Flint Metro League Stars Division last season
but she’s playing at an all-state level so far
Lake Fenton currently holds a 13-2 record with a slew of young talent steering the ship with Baehl
and Mia Merrell all representing the sophomore class
Baehl and Heil currently account for 12 of Lake Fenton’s 21 home runs
which is on pace to break the school record for most home runs in a season set by the 2024 Blue Devils’ squad
With two and a half years of varsity softball still left for Baehl
Wilkinson said there’s no telling how special of a player she’ll be when it’s all said and done
“(Her potential) is limitless,” Wilkinson said
they’re only sophomores.’ Their potential is crazy high.”
superintendent of Lake Fenton Community Schools
will say goodbye to the position at the end of 2025
Williams will have worked at LFCS for 26 years
“The journey has been truly amazing,” she said
“It’s an administrative job…There’s so much uncertainty that surrounds education from year to year
Legislative changes affect us and budget changes affect schools...but overall
I’m getting to see some of the kids that I was the high school principal for now have their children in the district
It’s surreal to have their little ones walking through.”
She joined the district in 1999 as the high school assistant principal and athletic director and became the high school principal in 2001
She worked as the executive director to the superintendent from 2006 to 2013 and as assistant superintendent from 2013 to 2017 before becoming superintendent
Williams is in her 37th year working in education
“I’ve spent my entire adult life working in education
but this job is exhausting and I need a break,” she said
Some people have reached out about Williams working in the private sector
Williams said she would like a more flexible schedule
So I will continue doing something,” she said
In January the Lake Fenton Board of Education approved hiring Assistant Superintendent Chris Belcher as superintendent
Williams said her plan was to give the board enough transition time
Williams said Belcher will do a “fantastic job.”
“He’s got a good foundation because he’s been in the district since 2016
He’s been working in this office since 2020
and then we have all of this year to continue that transition to this role because it is very different,” Williams said
and he’ll do everything he needs to do to make sure the district moves on
I think everybody steps into a leadership position and wants to leave it better than they found it
Williams said she’s proud of how the district has grown over the years
Now the district has approximately 2,000 students
“I’m proud of the relationships that I’ve built with parents
this district has come a long way over the 25 years that I’ve been here,” Williams said
they weren’t the shining star like it is today
After the high school was built and the academics
how we’ve improved in those areas over the years
I really feel like Lake Fenton’s become a shining star in the county
and there’s a lot of people involved in that.”
She’s also proud of fostering the family culture at the district
“It’s just making people understand it is our Lake Fenton family
“We help each other out in times of need.”
Williams has seen the district through obstacles such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the bond proposal that voters did not approve in November 2024
you’re just not funded at a level that you can keep up with all of the infrastructure needs and changes,” Williams said
“We do have some needs that need to be addressed
That’s one big area that we’re working on now.”
Williams said one of the best parts of her job has been collaborating with neighboring school districts Linden Community Schools and Fenton Area Public Schools
The three districts coordinate special education classrooms and enter into contracts together for transportation services and technology needs
“We’ve really been able to come together and harness that ability to collaborate and actually benefit the districts
We figure we’ve saved a hundred thousand dollars plus by those collaborations,” Williams said
Williams said they have great kids in the district
“I really like our ‘proud to be blue’ motto that we’ve embraced over the last several years
and I feel like our community’s embraced it,” she said
Williams is going to miss the people when she retires
It’s walking out in the hall and getting hugs from the little ones
and it’ll be helping people grow and watching them grow,” she said
Williams plans to stay in the area after retiring and anticipates serving in a mentor role for the district in the future
“Thank you to our Lake Fenton families for their belief in our district and their contributions to making Lake Fenton a great place to be
I wish the district and everybody around here the best,” she said

1/7Lake Fenton football prepares for 2024 season.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Brendan Savage | bsavage@mlive.comFLINT – Lake Fenton’s football team will have a different look this season
“It’s a different mindset with these kids than we’ve had in the past,” coach Marty Borski said during a recent MLive-Flint Journal media day at the Flint Farmers Market
“We’re going to be built a little bit different this year
physical runners and the physical guys up front
It’s not a big senior class by any stretch but we have a pretty tested group of kids with some experience.”
Two of the most experienced Blue Devils are seniors Jack Kent and Hunter Carey
Both were called up to the varsity for the 2021 playoffs
when Lake Fenton finished with a 9-2 record
185-pound defensive end and Carey is a 6-foot
207-pound offensive lineman and linebacker
Carey thinks his experience will pay off this season
“It’s helped every year I’ve played on the offensive line,” said Carey
who made the Metro League Stars Division first-team on offense last season
“I’ve played both ways on defense and kind of filled gaps where the team needed it
“Our team strength is going to be our motivation
Our team with our new fresh lineup is going to have a team bond coming into the season.”
Other top returning players include senior wide receiver Murphy Conley (5-10
330) and junior quarterback Camden Fray (6-2
Fray opened the season as the starting QB last year but tore his labrum in the second game
Pretty much all the strength is back,” said Fray
who calls his strength “running the ball north and south
Kent has high hopes after Lake Fenton finished 6-4 last season and lost in the first round of the playoffs
“Nothing but greatness out of our team,” he said
“We’ve put in the work in the weight room so I expect to see it on the field
I expect to see a lot of teamwork and brotherhood
Borski expects the size of his roster to be in the “low 30s.”
“Our bottom half of the roster is really green
“We have to cross train a bit just because depth is usually a problem
We have guys who have taken snaps at receiver
Goodrich — It’s been a tough start to the season for the defending Flint Metro League champion Fenton Tigers in varsity boys lacrosse action
The Tigers have had their share of injuries
and it’s resulted in a 0-4 start entering its first Metro contest against the Lake Fenton/Goodrich (LFG)
In what was a tight battle for most of the game
the Tigers earned the game-winning goal 31 seconds into overtime on a goal by sophomore Brady Brogren
We’ve worked hard all season and we finally won.”
It was the first game of the league season
so the Tigers are tied for first one game into the league slate
LFG had reason to feel good about its performance
trailed 4-1 less than five minutes into the game
the squad bounced back and started overwhelming Fenton
tying the game at 4-all entering the second stanza
Neither team led by two goals again until the final shot of the third quarter
A goal by Murphy Conley cut the gap to 11-10 with 9:10 left in regulation
LFG scored the final goal of regulation with 22 seconds left on a shot by Ian Shoemaker
That set up the sudden-death overtime period
Fenton won the face-off and was the only team to have possession during the extra session
“We’ve been snake bit,” Fenton varsity boys lacrosse coach Greg Normand said
“We have nine injuries and I’m playing a JV team
I have one player back (Roberts) and I have two all-state players still not playing
We were snake bit our first four games and then we came out here and kept shooting ourselves in the foot
“We will see where we can go when we get healthy.”
the inexperienced players have earned a win until that time has come
The program has eight freshmen and four sophomores on it among the 20 players on it
So hanging with Fenton (1-4) was a feather in the program’s cap as well
Trey MacDonald scored two goals and Conley had one
LFG took its first lead at 5-4 just 21 seconds into the second quarter on a Hallwood goal
the teams found themselves in an battle that saw six more ties and three more lead changes
“We are a young team,” LFG varsity boys lacrosse coach Brad Laikes said
we are going to have a good team in a couple of years
and I think we can keep moving forward this year
but we will have other opportunities to make it up.”
Continued at TCTimes.COM
The game also was just LFG’s second of the season while Fenton was playing its fifth
their performance was even more impressive
Both teams were balanced with their scoring
Owen Mueller and Evan Crane had three goals each while Brogren and Roberts had two each
Kalib Matthys and Jonah Andrews had one goal each
Hallwood led LFG with five goals while MacDonald and Conley had two goals each
Rain showers early will evolve into a more steady rain overnight

MI – There’s no quarterback controversy at Lake Fenton
“I think we have a quarterback luxury,” Borski said Friday after the Blue Devils beat Hillsdale 32-6 behind the performance of sophomore quarterback Miles Melton
We were a little late on a couple throws but I’m extremely proud of him
That’s good news with powerful Goodrich on the docket next week
Lake Fenton (2-0) was forced to start the untested QB against Hillsdale after No
1 signal-called Camden Fray injured his knee and was suspended for getting ejected in last week’s win over Pinckney
But Melton performed like a proven veteran in the first half
leading the Blue Devils to a 26-0 lead by throwing three touchdown passes while completing 6 of 9 passes for 84 yards
He hit Coleson Lessner with a 6-yard TD pass to open the scoring with 41 seconds left in the first quarter
found Xander Stalo for an 18-yard TD early in the second quarter and made it 26-0 with a 32-yard TD strike to Carson Nerreter with 72 seconds left in the first half
“I wasn’t nervous coming into it,” said Melton
who finished 11-for-15 passing for 161 yards
I’ve been waiting for a year and a half to play varsity quarterback and I did it today
I’ve been training now for two to three years and it just happened
The Blue Devils’ defense was outstanding in the first half
holding Hillsdale without a first down until 6:56 remained in the first half
Carson Nerreter had the first of his two interceptions in the first half to lead the Blue Devils’ defensive effort
“I thought we played hard in the first half,” Borski said
So very pleased with how we came out in the first half.”
The Blue Devils were sloppy with the ball after Lessner returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown to make it 32-0
What looked like it would turn into a running clock game saw Lake Fenton fumble the ball away twice
Hillsdale scored its only TD when Evan Thorne hit Ashton Thorsbury with a 40-yard TD pass with 9:38 left
Here is a rendering of the main entry for the boutique hotel
The owners of the Fenton Winery & Brewery/Dream Machine Distillery plan to build a boutique hotel at the eastern corner of the N
Long Lake Road and Fenton Road intersection in Fenton Township
Matt and Ginny Sherrow appeared in front of the Fenton Township Planning Commission on Thursday
The hotel will be 4,500 square feet on the first floor and just shy of 17,000 square feet in total with three floors and a basement area
Seventeen rooms will be located in the main building
which are full units available to be rented
The chalets will have a more residential feel compared to the hotel
The facility will also have a bistro cafe and a 60-person event space on the first floor
A hotel is permitted with the land’s C-2 zoning classification
Fenton Winery & Brewery/Dream Machine Distillery hosts more than 100 events a year
Ginny Sherrow said their biggest complaint from event clients is not having a place nearby to stay the night
Their goal is to provide hotel accommodations for event guests as well as “serve the community in a bigger capacity…providing a full Fenton Township experience for couples and guests,” Ginny said
The nearest hotels to Fenton Winery & Brewery/Dream Machine Distillery are Fairfield Inn & Suites on Silver Lake Road in Fenton and the Gateway Hotel & Convention Center in Flint Township
The Sherrows have been discussing building a hotel for approximately four years
which is near Fenton Winery & Brewery/Dream Machine Distillery
about a year and half ago when it became available
They hired a surveyor who specializes in wetlands to discover the boundaries of the buildable land as well as a civil engineer
Matt Sherrow said the eastern two acres are not buildable because it’s protected wetlands
Ginny Sherrow said they didn’t want to construct an extremely large building because they didn’t feel it would fit the residential feel of the area
“It’ll be a good use for the land,” she said
The couple plans to incorporate the wetlands into the aesthetics of the hotel
Ginny said the design of the hotel will be nature based and will feature natural elements such as stone
They’re also planning to build a public boardwalk through the wetlands
“We want to make sure it’s something people can enjoy during the summertime,” Ginny said
The Sherrows don’t yet have a name for the boutique hotel
They will submit the site plan to the township next week
Their civil engineer is currently working with the Genesee County Road Commission
“We have quite a long process ahead of us,” Ginny said
They’re working with the state to protect the wetlands
they’re working with the GCRC to create safe ingress and egress plans
“We have quite a bit of work to do to get groundwork laid before we can do groundbreaking,” she said
adding that they also will need to request variances from the township
“We’re just being thorough and taking our time.”
The couple is working with Brian Kincaid from Kincaid Building Group
Fenton Land Surveying & Engineering and Sedgwick + Ferweda from Flint
Their goal is to break ground in the late summer of 2025
Construction will take an estimated 18 months to two years
21 Fenton Township Planning Commission meeting
The voters in the Lake Fenton Community Schools district failed to pass a $68,250,000 bond proposal by a vote of 3,783 (47.13%) yes votes to 4,244 (52.87%) no votes
Election results are unofficial until they are approved by the state board of canvassers
This was the second bond proposal denied by voters
it would have been an extension of the school district’s 5-mill levy and would have generated $57.5 million
voters were asked to approve a 2.36 millage that would help pay for safety and technology improvements to every school building
The 2.36 millage was expected to raise $68.5 million over 24 years
The tax rate would have increased by 2.36 mills for property owners in the school district
The bond proposal was for the purpose of: erecting
and equipping and re-equipping school buildings and facilities
and additions to school buildings; furnishing and refurnishing school buildings and facilities; acquiring
equipping and re-equipping school buildings for instructional technology; and preparing
Lake Fenton Community Schools Superintendent Julie Williams said
we are deeply disappointed with the outcome of the recent bond vote
but we understand and respect the community’s decision
“This bond proposal was designed to help us address much-needed academic
while at the same time creating spaces to enhance community connection
that many community members did not support the project scope or they felt the tax increase was too much
“We know our community values education and we appreciate the support they have provided Lake Fenton Community Schools for many years
we plan to seek additional input from our parents
and students to help us build a plan that our entire community can support
we remain dedicated to ensuring a bright future for our schools and community.”
To gain input from the Lake Fenton Community Schools voters, school leaders ask that people take a few minutes to take a survey. Here’s a link to the survey – https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2024lfbondsurvey

All of the school buildings at Lake Fenton Community Schools are in the midst of homecoming activities – all to promote the Blue Devil’s school pride
The Lake Fenton Community Schools parade begins at 4:45 p.m
This year’s grand marshal for the parade is Susie Vadovich
who retired last year as a building parapro
Vadovich also is well known as the Lake Fenton seamstress for many homecoming and prom dresses
Vadovich said she was caught by surprise when Superintendent Julie Williams called her to tell her the news
I thought she wanted me to help direct traffic
Vadovich said she can still remember her first day at the elementary school 30 years ago
She said over all those years it felt more like going to school rather than going to a job
the timing felt right to retire and it’s also giving her more free time to help her sister Dwinn who has been experiencing some health issues
The homecoming football game pits Lake Fenton vs
Lake Fenton — What a way to start a season
It was the Fenton/Linden varsity girls lacrosse’s second game
and the first one for the Lake Fenton/Goodrich squad
And for a half the rivalry contest was pretty intense as the Fenton/Linden Heat only led Lake Fenton/Goodrich by a 2-1 halftime score
cruising to a 7-1 Flint Metro League victory
It was the second victory for Fenton/Linden in three days
The Heat opened the season by defeating DeWitt 8-7 in the opening contest of the season
That game was won on a last-minute goal by Jessie Livingston
In this contest there wasn’t a dramatic final-goal shot
The Heat opened the second half with a goal by Mady Behnke just 19 seconds into the third quar-
Lake Fenton/Goodrich appeared to cut the gap to 3-2 just a couple of minutes later on a shot by Chloe Vornies
but Lake Fenton/Goodrich were called offsides on the play
That seemed to take the wind out of the home team’s sails
Fenton/Linden got goals by Grace Perry and Kallyn Sprague before the third quarter was over
Deperately needing a goal early in the fourth
Lake Fenton/Goodrich saw Fenton/Linden’s Ava Vorhies score one just 42 seconds into the fourth quarter
Behnke added another about 90 seconds later
“It was shocking and a nice surprise for us in our first game,” Heat varsity girls lacrosse coach Isabel Greene said
we were rusty at the beginning of the first two quarters
but we just reconnected again at halftime and fought hard.”
“This was early (for a first game) for us
and we played a game with a lot of girls (about 30 on the roster) just 10 days into the season,” Lake Fenton/Goodrich varsity girls lacrosse coach Katie Hamilton said
The first half saw Fenton/Linden take the early lead on a Behnke goal
Lake Fenton/Goodrich answered back with a goal by freshman Isabelle Alexander
Perry gave the Heat the lead for good when she scored to make it 2-1 in the second quarter
which in turn helped them keep possession most of the contest
But it wasn’t like Lake Fenton/Goodrich didn’t have scoring opportunities
The Heat goalie duties were split between Sophia Chambers and Kayla Kinney and they combined to make 14 saves on 15 shots
Lake Fenton/Goodrich also had one more game before spring break
and it was a thriller — a 9-8 loss at Flushing on March 25
Fenton/Linden had one more game prior to spring break
That one was a 10-6 loss to Davison at home on March 25
Mady Behnke and Grace Perry had goals for the Heat
Behnke and Perry also had two assists each
Lake Fenton — Coleson Lessner wasn’t even sure what was called for the final play of the game initially when Lake Fenton varsity boys basketball coach Jalen Miller called it during a time out in a close game against the Linden Eagles on Tuesday night
But he figured out in time to earn the Blue Devils an entertaining road win
With Lake Fenton trailing in the waning seconds
he dribbled close to the three-point line where the Eagles’ Jase Becher was waiting
he stopped a tad early and hit the three-pointer at the buzzer
“I had to ask one of our centers what the play was because I was so out of it,” Lessner said
“But I was just coming off that screen and Kevin (Blair) set a perfect screen at the halfcourt line
I shot it right there and ended the game.”
he made that decision to make the pull up,” Miller said
“I wanted him to get to the basket and get a foul because we were in the double bonus
The win came on what the Blue Devils termed “Rivalry Week” because they had Linden on Tuesday and faced Corunna on Friday
The Corunna results were not known at press time
The Eagles had the upper hand entering the fourth quarter
Leading already 47-41 entering the final quarter after two converted free throws by Jalen Babcock
the Eagles seemingly took control of the contest early in the final stanza
A three-pointer by Landon Jones upped Linden’s lead to 50-41
By the time the run was over on a three-pointer by Ryan Nossek
the Eagles led 57-44 with 5:40 left in regulation
the Blue Devils didn’t quit and went on a seven-point run of their own
It started with a converted free throw by Brady Belcher and ended with a layup by Belcher
Lake Fenton trailed just 57-51 with 3:31 still remaining in regulation
Lake Fenton upped the gap back to 58-51 with a converted free throw by Jones
but the Eagles would go on another key run
This time they scored seven unanswered points
capped by a converted free throw by Lessner
The Blue Devils trailed just 58-57 with 7.7 seconds left
Linden’s Maddox Suniga was fouled and made one of two free throws
raising Linden’s lead to 59-57 with just six seconds left
Up next was the game-winning shot against their neighborhood rival after a Lake Fenton time out
“We were preaching rivalry week all week,” Lessner said
It’s a great feeling because we bring energy to each and every one of those rivalry games.”
The first half was a pretty balanced game
but the Eagles broke a 29-29 tie right before the half on a Suniga three-pointer
The third quarter featured four lead changes and two ties
The last lead change of the quarter came on a three-point bucket by Linden’s Carter Bushon
giving Linden a 43-41 lead with 3:12 left in the third quarter
Becher hit a post hoop and Jalen Babcock hit two free throws
earning the Eagles a 47-41 lead entering the final eight minutes
After hitting 20-of-41 shots from the field for the first three quarters
making 4-of-14 shots and just 3-of-8 free throws in the final eight minutes
“We executed a lot of things in the game plan we wanted today
but they made some tough shots and that’s basketball,” Linden varsity boys basketball coach Brenden Miller said
“Basketball is a game of ups and downs and we just tried to weather the storm
both towns come out and we get a good game
and hopefully we get another shot at them later in the year.”
Lake Fenton made just 5-of-14 shots during the final eight minutes
but made a few more free throws (8-of-18) to earn the win down the stretch
“That’s the main thing I’ve been talking about since I came here as coach
I told them we have to show we have pride and heart
“Coach was preaching defense,” Lessner said
It’s going to be defense this year and we pulled that out with our defense.”
Lessner led the Blue Devils with 24 points while Belcher had 18 points
Becher led the Eagles with 23 points while Ryan Nosek had nine points

On Wednesday in a match with fellow defending co-league champions Lake Fenton

The Tigers competed in duals against Lake Fenton and Holly and came out of the matches with two pretty convincing wins
and then defeated the rebuilding Blue Devils 66-11
defeating Corunna 39-39 on tiebreaker criteria
Lake Fenton lost its other match to Corunna 54-33
solid team,” Fenton varsity wrestling coach Buddy Poyner said
We have a lot of skill in the young kids though
We lost a lot of really talented kids up top
but we brought up a lot of good young talent there as well
We have a talented team top through bottom
so it looks like it’s going to be a good year.”
The Tigers opened their night against area rival Holly
The Bronchos jumped out to an early 15-0 lead in the first three matches

the Lake Fenton varsity girls basketball team had its share of it this season
the squad knew it would be one on the rebuilding mode
The squad included an abundance of sophomores (three) and freshmen (three to start but four at season’s end) that were going to have to learn how to play at the varsity level
then health reasons forced varsity girls basketball coach Karlie Dieck to spend the majority of the season away from the games or sitting back in a very relaxed capacity
That meant Josh Fox took over the head coach duties during the season
it’s easy to see why the Blue Devils started 0-10
the Blue Devils have clearly been a more experienced product
and their talent started to show on a more consistent basis
The squad finished the second half of the regular season with a 6-4 record
winning each of their final three contests
Lake Fenton would’ve loved to collect a home district victory during the postseason
The Blue Devils definitely had their chances
but lost to Flint Kearsley 50-41 at home on Monday
“We came into this season (with) the mindset we were starting over,” Fox said
and that’s what we kind of worked on the whole season
“I was telling them in (the locker room) I was so proud of them
So many times during the season we could have just quit and it just never happened
They kept coming to practice every day and kept working
Lake Fenton showed that energy and jumped to an early lead
Braylee Ross scored Lake Fenton’s first points with a three-pointer
and the run continued with an Alicia Zelek post hoop and a driving hoop by Mia Merrell
The Blue Devils led 7-1 just two minutes into the game
The lead eventually grew to 13-4 after another driving hoop by Merrell
Kearsley calmed down after the shockwave the Blue Devils created against them and went on an 8-0 run of their own
cutting the gap to 13-12 by the end of the first quarter
Lake Fenton led in the first half one more time
That came at 15-14 on a jumper by Emma Highfield
They were still tied 18-all after a converted free throw by Merrell
but Kearlsey went on an 8-2 run to end the half
The Blue Devils remained tight through the third and took the lead early in the fourth
cutting the deficit to just 38-37 early in the fourth
Then Merrell earned a steal and a fastbreak layup giving the Blue Devils a 39-38 lead with 6:30 left in regulation
Lake Fenton scored just three points the rest of the way eventually forging to the victory
Lake Fenton had 12 turnovers from the point the Blue Devils retook the lead to the end of the game
“You can see it times where it was working
but then they just get too sped up and the inexperience takes over.”
“A lot of the girls are excited,” Fox said
“We already have our calendar for the offseason and we’re ready to get back into it
It’s time for the yearly plunge into Lake Fenton
The annual Polar Plunge is set to take place on Saturday
“The Polar Plunge is for the Special Olympics,” said Pat Peters
area 13 director of Special Olympics Michigan
“There’s actually 20-some-locations (of Polar Plunge) within the state of Michigan.”
Funds raised through the plunge are given to the athletes of Special Olympics Michigan
Participants will raise money in groups and wear fun and bright costumes before taking the icy plunge into Lake Fenton
“It helps them so we can continue to grow,” Peters said
“I do it because I believe that I see the growth for every one of my athletes whether it’s social growth or self-esteem.”
Lunch is included for all plungers who raise at least $100
Drinks and lunch for spectators is available for purchase on-site
Overflow parking will be available nearby at Fenton Winery & Brewery
Lake Fenton Middle School and FirePlace with a shuttle service
The shuttle service will begin at 10:30 am
“And the reason why a lot of people do it is because it’s on their bucket list,” Peters said
“They want to be able to do one of those things.”
the Polar Plunge raised more than $150,000 with its $90,000 goal
Their goal for this year is to raise at least $110,000

It was the case of one bad quarter for the Lake Fenton varsity boys basketball team on Tuesday night
