Lake Geneva officials have continued a Sunday morning parking program
in which parking placards are provided to downtown churches that they can distribute to non-resident members and visitors so they can have free parking while attending services
A church parking program will be continued in the city of Lake Geneva
Members of the Lake Geneva City Council unanimously approved
to continue a Sunday morning parking program for downtown churches
Licensing and Regulation Committee members unanimously approved to continue the program
city officials provide parking placards to downtown churches which they may distribute to non-resident members or visitors so they can have free parking while attending church services during Lake Geneva's paid parking season
The churches that are apart of the program include First Congregational United Church of Christ
Lake Geneva United Methodist Church and First Church of Christ Scientist
City officials have been debating during the past several months about whether to continue program
which has been offered since December 2021
Lake Geneva aldermen and church representatives met March 13 to discuss changes to the parking program
The program previously allowed non-resident church members and visitors to have two hours of free parking
The program now allows for three hours of free parking
Some church representatives had requested that free parking be allowed until 12:30 p.m
Other changes to the program include not issuing placards to vehicles with a city of Lake Geneva parking sticker; revoking a placard from someone who is found using a duplicated placard; requiring church officials to return their placards before Dec
15 of their expiration year; requiring church officials to maintain a record of the members who are receiving a placard; and limiting parking to within a one-block radius of a church
Several church officials proposed that the placards be used during services and programs that are held on Shrove Tuesday
some city officials felt adding those holidays could be confusing for parking operations staff because they often occur on different dates each year
and churches conduct services and programs at different times and some churches do not host programs on those days
As part of the revised Sunday morning parking program
Holy Communion Episcopal Church will receive 45 placards; Lake Geneva United Methodist Church will receive 20 placards; First Congregational United Church of Christ will receive 15 placards; and First Church of Christ Scientist will receive 10 placards
Alderwoman Sherri Ames said she is pleased that parking program will be continued
and I think everybody didn't get everything they wanted but I think it was a good move and it shows good will to the churches," Ames said
Alderwoman Catherine Stoodley said she appreciates that city officials and church representatives were able to work together to come up with a revised program
"Thank you so very much for your patience and getting this to where it needs to be," Stoodley said
senior warden for Holy Communion Episcopal Church
said even though church officials did not receive everything they requested
he is pleased that the program will be continued
but that's called compromise and we're good with that," Lemcke said
We don't issue permits to anybody who lives in the city
We treat it with the respect that it deserves."

A Hartmann’s Mountain zebra foal was born April 25 at 8:38 p.m
to mother Promise and father Obi at the Racine Zoo
Authorities say millions of coins spilled onto a Texas highway this week after a tractor-trailer hauling $800,000 in dimes rolled over in an accident
RACINE — Who’s a boy with black-and-white stripes
The newest member of the Racine Zoo family
This is the second Hartmann’s Mountain foal to be born at the zoo and an important addition to the Hartmann’s Mountain zebra population
according to a recent Racine Zoo press release
With Hartmann’s Mountain zebras vulnerable in their native habitats in southern Africa
the foal is an important contribution to global conservation of this species
curator of animal care and conservation at the zoo
said they cannot wait to introduce the new foal to the public
“This successful birth is a testament to the hard work of the animal care specialists and medical team monitoring Promise’s pregnancy and daily care,” he said
with the baby nursing and hours after birth
Continued training allowed for careful monitoring of Promise’s condition as her due date approached
Hartmann’s Mountain zebra pregnancies are a full year in length
care staff began to suspect Promise was pregnant early in the summer of 2024
Hormone testing and an ultrasound confirmed the pregnancy this past fall
In order to ensure a safe and healthy birth

They tracked and recorded all of her behaviors
While mom and baby will be off-exhibit to bond until the weather is consistently warmer
updates on the progress of the foal will be posted on the zoo’s social media accounts
The zoo will also hold a contest to name the foal and have exclusive zebra apparel available soon
Youth and adult shirts and sweatshirts will be available in multiple colors
Funds raised by the contest and apparel will directly support the care of the baby zebra

The Lake Geneva Badger girls track and field team couldn’t have rounded out the week much better
finishing in first place out of eight teams in the 26th annual Badger Invitational on Friday
It was an all-around exceptional performance for the team both on the track and in the many field events
Badger was tied for first with Monroe going into the final events
but a first-place finish in the Discus throw
by Badger senior Ashlin Nottestad to help put them over the top
But one of the many standouts of the invitational for Badger was junior Madi Braden
She placed second in the 100 Meter Dash with a ridiculous time of 12.54
well over a second ahead of the second-place finisher
this time in the 200 Meter Dash with a time of 26.28 and capped things off with a first-place finish in the Girls 4X400 Meter Relay alongside teammates Brooklyn Flies (senior)
Kennedy Monge (senior) and Teagan Clausen (sophomore)
The Big Foot’s Softball team’s week may not have started the way they wanted losing to Beloit Turner on Tuesday
but they certainly made up for it the rest of the week
defeating Clinton and Monroe in back-to-back days on Thursday and Friday
and while their win against Monroe in conference may be a bigger deal due to their current ranking
no win was cooler than the one against Clinton on Thursday thanks to senior Natalie Klamm

only allowing one hit and striking out five
while the Lady Bulldogs had an absurd 19 hits in the game
Everyone in the lineup had at least one hit
and seven of them had two or more hits in the game
But nobody had a better day at the plate than senior second baseman Baleigh Kozak
Kozak went 4-4 with three RBIs and four runs scored
it’s impossible to have a better day offensively than that

NEW YORK — President Donald Trump opened a new salvo in his tariff war
Trump said he authorized the Department of Commerce and the Office of the U.S

"The Movie Industry in America is DYING a very fast death," he wrote

President Donald Trump speaks with reporters after disembarking Marine One upon arrival on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington
It wasn't immediately clear how any such tariff on international productions could be implemented
It's common for both large and small films to include production in the U.S
Big-budget movies like the upcoming "Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning," for instance
Incentive programs for years have influenced where movies are shot
increasingly driving film production out of California and to other states and countries with favorable tax incentives
Yet Trump's tariffs are designed to lead consumers toward American products
American-produced movies overwhelming dominate the domestic marketplace
China has ramped up its domestic movie production
culminating in the animated blockbuster "Ne Zha 2" grossing more than $2 billion this year
its sales came almost entirely from mainland China
where successive governments have offered rebates and incentives in recent years to draw Hollywood films to the country
the film industry has generated billions of dollars in tourism revenue driven by the "Lord of the Rings" and "Hobbit" films
which featured the country's pristine and scenic vistas
the blockbuster "Minecraft" movie was filmed entirely in New Zealand

film and television production has been hampered in recent years
the Hollywood guild strikes of 2023 and the recent wildfires in the Los Angeles area

In a post Sunday night on his Truth Soc…
on Sunday after winning the CJ Cup Byron Nelson in McKinney
Texas — Scottie Scheffler cradled his year-old son Bennett — the reason he missed his beloved hometown CJ Cup Byron Nelson in 2024 — and struggled to keep his emotions in check for a TV interview
just as he did a few minutes later during the victory speech
The top-ranked player had time to prepare for the moment because of the giant lead he took into Sunday's final round
and he even added a little drama by chasing the PGA Tour's 72-hole scoring record
Scheffler matched that mark of 253 set by Justin Thomas at the 2017 Sony Open and equaled six years later by Ludvig Aberg at the RSM Classic
closing with a 63 to finish at 31 under par
The runaway victory came 11 years after his PGA Tour debut at the Nelson as a high school senior
and 22 years after a photo was taken of then-6-year-old Scheffler with the tournament namesake
Scheffler couldn't help but think about that day in 2014
was his girlfriend — not yet the mother of their first child — and sister Callie
and I think at times it all comes crashing down to me at once,” Scheffler said
“We have a lot of great memories as kids coming to watch this tournament
and it’s more of a dream to be able to win it.”
Scheffler was in position to break the tour scoring record before a flubbed chip that led to bogey on the par-3 17th hole and a par from a greenside bunker on the par-5 closing hole
His 8-foot putt for birdie and the record slid by the left side of the hole
Hideki Matsuyama has the lowest score in relation to par this season
35 under on the par-73 Plantation Course at Kapalua
Scheffler tied the 54-hole Nelson record with an eight-shot lead
and nobody got closer than six during the final round
Erik van Rooyen of South Africa matched Scheffler’s 8-under 63 to finish at 23 under
three shots ahead of Sam Stevens and four ahead of another hometown favorite
and I told you it was going to be a steep mountain to climb
which is kind of what you expect from the world No
Scheffler and Spieth finished with the two lowest rounds of the tournament
Scheffler opened with a 10-under 61 on Thursday at the defenseless par-71 TPC Craig Ranch in a suburban community about 30 miles north of Dallas
knowing his friend and fellow Texas alum was about to become the first of the pair to win the event they both cherish
Spieth was the first to make his tour debut at the Nelson
leading many to believe that surely he would have won it by now
“I think I’ll take it easy on him,” Scheffler said with a chuckle
Utah — Haeran Ryu made an 8-foot eagle putt during a flawless back nine that allowed her to pull away Sunday with an 8-under 64
giving her a five-shot victory at the inaugural Black Desert Championship in the LPGA Tour's return to Utah after a 61-year absence
Ryu became the second player to go wire-to-wire on the LPGA Tour this year
and it was her second time winning a new event
She won the FM Championship at the TPC Boston last year
She was coming off a rough finish at the Chevron Championship last week
sharing the 54-hole lead at the first major of the year until closing with a 76
This one was closer than the five-shot margin indicated
Ryu was clinging to a one-shot lead over Esther Henseleit of Germany going to the back nine
She missed a 6-foot birdie putt on the 10th — her third straight miss from short range for birdie
But then she made a 15-foot birdie putt at the 11th
and her eagle at the 13th put her ahead by four shots
who now has won in each of the last seven years dating to her first win as an 18-year-old on the Korea LPGA
not making another birdie until the 18th hole for a 66
South Korea — Bryson DeChambeau held off a big charge from Charles Howell III with birdies on his last two holes for a 6-under 66 on Sunday for a two-shot victory at LIV Golf Korea
who played in the final group at the Masters and lost a 36-hole lead at LIV Golf Mexico City last week
started the third and final round at the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club with a four-shot lead and was even par for the round through nine holes
They were tied until Howell made a bogey on the 16th hole
and DeChambeau rolled in a long birdie putt at the 17th for a two-shot cushion going to the par-5 18th
DeChambeau finished at 19-under 197 and won $4 million for his first LIV Golf League title since September 2023 and his third overall
Crushers won the team title by nine shots over Smash
DeChambeau next joins what likely will be 13 other players from LIV Golf in the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club on May 15-18
DeChambeau was runner-up to Xander Schauffele in the PGA Championship last year

but they don't come close to telling the whole story of the state's golf riches
but still well within the Badger State's warm - but not too hot - summer embrace lies Lake Geneva
which Chicagoans and golfers from points farther afield have visited for decades
It's less than two hours from the Windy City to Lake Geneva and just over an hour from Milwaukee
Anchored by two proud resorts and complemented by three other accessible independent golf courses
Lake Geneva provides a nice mix of variety and familiarity for groups who want to return year after year
Lake Geneva's pillars are Grand Geneva Resort and Destination Geneva National
Both properties have invested millions in improving the experience both on and off the course in recent years and both are intent on keeping that positive momentum rolling in order to help them fly up the discerning traveling golfer's wishlist
Ever since the sensation around TV series Mad Men helped thrust it back into the wider culture in the late Oughts
midcentury modern style has remained popular in seemingly every part of life
Courses inspired by the best pre-World War II layouts have dominated social media feeds and enjoyed particular commercial success in the last decade-plus
60s and early 70s do share a curvilinear coolness with Eames chairs and Noguchi tables
They are worthy of study and preservation as artifacts of a distinct era in the history of golf's main art form
Originally opened in 1968, The Brute at Grand Geneva Resort & Spa is a stirring example of midcentury modern golf
Laid out by prolific postwar architect Robert Bruce Harris
it strikes a strong pose on exciting parkland terrain just west of Lake Geneva's northwestern tip
Harris often pursued what he perceived as an "ideal" golf course routing
striving to have as few instances of consecutive holes sharing the same par as possible within a given nine-hole stretch
Only twice does a golfer encounter back-to-back par 4s: at 9 and 10
par 4s alternate with par 5s and par 3s to constantly keep golfers hitting different clubs
deeper level of mental engagement than many contemporaneous courses offer
tilted greens and 68 vast oval-shaped bunkers mark The Brute in time while also playing subtle mind games with the golfer
Playing the course is a constant confrontation with surprising scale
specifically relative to the enormity of the bunkers
They function to dwarf what are actually generous fairways and outright huge greens
often turning what should be routine approaches into slightly uncomfortable battles not just with the golf course but with the self
While some modest tree management would help open up some views across the property
The Brute balances challenge and playability nicely
The overall resort also opened in '68 and was known as The Playboy Club until the 80s
when it changed hands before being acquired by its current ownership
It has made several key improvements in recent years
including a full overhaul of its guestrooms in 2023
The common spaces of the main hotel are squarely midcentury-modern themselves
inspired by the iconic architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright
sits two hours north and west of Grand Geneva
is one of the finest steakhouses I have visited
Grand Geneva will soon bring a bit of new golf to future visitors as it joins the growing list of resorts building short courses
a 10-hole short loop with holes averaging just under 100 yards will be laid out by Milwaukee-based architect Matt Dusenberry and is expected to open for play in 2026
That course will occupy the site of Grand Geneva's former driving range
which will now be located on the site of the resort's former airstrip and will open fully in June
In the meantime, in addition to The Brute, golfers will continue to enjoy The Highlands
a 1970 Pete Dye/Jack Nicklaus collaboration that was redesigned in the 1990s by Bob Cupp
Whereas The Brute invites aggressive play and big swings
wandering over some more abrupt terrain and into some narrower corridors
Its intimate routing rewards precision in a way that compliments The Brute's grander feel
tend to inspire lively 19th-Hole - or perhaps 55th-Hole - debate among the groups that visit
I actually favor the up-and-down-and-all-around Player course by a hair over Palmer
though Palmer's par-3 16th and par-5 17th holes
which run along the north shore of Lake Como (Geneva's neighbor to the north) offer the type of scenery that elevates a golf experience from good to great
Geneva National has invested heavily in improvements over the last few years
longtime Arnold Palmer Design associate Brandon Johnson came west to advise on key changes to a handful of holes on Geneva National's Palmer course
which used to be overly penal and leave golfers with a rough first impression
Wisconsin-based architect Craig Haltom has made some similar playability updates to the Trevino course
including more than doubling the size of the 14th fairway
which was often criticized by golfers as excessively penal
Haltom also designed a rollicking-fun putting course
which sits perfectly between the clubhouse and the driving range
A Mexican-themed bar is close at hand for golfers who putt better on tequila
All three spots have an enchanting view of Lake Como
which is part of the reason why Geneva National garnered the top spot in Golfers' Choice 2025's list of facilities with the best off-course amenities nationwide
Geneva National has a distinct buddy-trip vibe thanks in large part to its large and growing clutch of accommodations
anchored by a group of wonderful multi-bedroom cottages
the resort also acquired a hotel across Lake Como called The Ridge
rebranding it Lodge Geneva National and renovating all of its interior spaces and rooms
This adds yet another lodging option for guests
Geneva National is home to a superb steakhouse
Even if you don't play your best golf on property
On the other side of the lake lie 27 more holes of accessible golf. Originally laid out by Ken Killian & Dick Nugent, Abbey Springs opened in 1971 and was renovated in 2021 by Bob Lohmann and Todd Quitno
It is mostly a members' club but does allow public tee times as well
"The course truly has no bad holes now and some of the best rolling most challenging greens you can play," according to one glowing GolfPass review from 2022
I have Country Club Estates squarely on my radar for my next Lake Geneva visit
The decision to impose tariffs comes amid claims that Mexican growers are undercutting U.S
tomato producers in the competitive market
While President Donald Trump put threatened tariffs on Mexican avocados on pause
government plans to put a nearly 21% duty on fresh Mexican tomatoes starting July 14
A duty — like a tariff — is a tax on imports
and this one would impact the 4 billion pounds of tomatoes the U.S
Proponents say the import tax will help rebuild the shrinking U.S
tomato industry and ensure the produce eaten in the U.S
Mexico currently supplies around 70% of U.S
"Unless we even the playing field in terms of fair pricing
you're not going to have a domestic industry for fresh tomatoes in the very near future," Robert Guenther
the trade group's executive vice president
but most of California's crop is turned into sauces and other products
Opponents say the duty will make fresh tomatoes more expensive for U.S
a San Antonio-based company that grows tomatoes in Mexico as well as the U.S.
said it will be paying millions of dollars each month in duties if the decision isn't reversed
"We will look for ways to adapt or streamline our operations
we are always doing that so we run an efficient business already," said Skip Hulett
We're determining what portion of the cost we could absorb
but these added costs will most certainly need to be passed on to the consumer."
a professor at the Morrison School of Agribusiness at Arizona State University
retail prices for tomatoes to rise by around 10.5% if the duty goes through
Mexico's government said last month it was convinced it could negotiate over the issue
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has hinted her country may impose duties on chicken and pork legs imported from the U.S
The tug-of-war over tomatoes has a long history
shortly after the North American Free Trade Agreement went into effect
Department of Commerce investigated allegations that Mexico was exporting tomatoes to the U.S
government agreed to suspend the investigation if Mexico met certain rules
including selling its tomatoes at a minimum price
the agreement has been subject to periodic reviews
but the two sides always reached an agreement that avoided duties
the Commerce Department announced its withdrawal from the latest agreement
saying it had been "flooded with comments" from U.S
tomato growers who want better protection from Mexican imports
said even though Mexican exporters are required to charge a minimum price
industry because it costs 40% to 50% less to grow tomatoes there
labor is cheaper and inputs like seeds and fertilizer cost less
industry typically relies on immigrant workers through the H-2A visa program
That program required farmers to pay workers an average of $16.98 per hour last year
an amount that has jumped as labor has become harder to find
Richards estimates that workers on Mexican tomato farms earn about one-tenth that rate
NatureSweet acknowledges that it's more cost-effective to grow tomatoes in Mexico
but says climate is one of the biggest reasons

Florida tomatoes are picked when they're green and shipped to warehouses to ripen
"Florida doesn't grow the kinds of specialty tomatoes that have taken off
but they want to get protection," Jungmeyer said
"Their market share is dropping for reasons of their own choice."
"If you put a Florida tomato up against a Mexican tomato
I think it would do very well in taste test," he said

He compares it to fine wine; if he wants a good cabernet sauvignon
If he wants a good tomato that reminds him of his childhood
"We know the flavors they are going to bring to the salsas and moles
We don't want to compromise flavors," Burciaga said
Burciaga said his restaurant uses 300 to 400 pounds of Roma tomatoes from Mexico every week
He currently pays $19 for a 25-pound crate of tomatoes
He doesn't relish paying the additional cost
Burciaga said the tomato duty — and the threat of Trump implementing the paused 25% tariff on many other products from Mexico — are making it difficult to run his business

WNBA’s newest team debuts with global focus
Don't tell Natalie Nakase she doesn't have what it takes to do something
The coach of the San Francisco Bay Area's first WNBA team got to where she is by learning to block out those who underestimated her
"If I hear one negative thing about my goal
we're done," Nakase told The Associated Press
but it's made my circle really powerful and encouraging and supportive for me."
Golden State Valkyries head coach Natalie Nakase speaks with the press during their first day of camp in Oakland
to going from being a walk-on at UCLA to team captain as a 5-foot-2 freshman in 1998
It's what made her the first Asian American player to join the now-defunct National Women's Basketball League in 2003
Nakase is blazing a trail again as the WNBA's first Asian American head coach
That distinction adds to an already impressive rise to be the leader of the Golden State Valkyries
the league's first expansion franchise since 2008
Their inaugural roster also happens to include championship-winning UConn guard Kaitlyn Chen
who last month became the first Taiwanese American drafted
Golden State Valkyries' Kaitlyn Chen practices during training camp at the WNBA team's facility in Oakland
isn't rattled ascending to a larger spotlight
has prepared her for being more public and "preparation builds confidence," she said
Coaching is something Nakase expressed interest in as far back as 20 years when she was on the San Jose Spiders
For people who may not see Asian American women as leaders
Nakase hopes her new role will change minds
"I think it's more like what's in your mind rather than like the exterior part of it," said Nakase
who at UCLA was often mistaken for a gymnast or tennis player
Nakase's leadership style is one of "tough love." It's an approach she learned from her father
Compliments were not something given in her family
Her father "not only (held) me accountable but
he set higher and higher standards because I think if you believe in yourself — in this — then I want to push you to this," Nakase said
That's not to say she won't be there for players off the court
Nakase said her "responsibility is to be with them every single day
Golden State Valkyries head coach Natalie Nakase smiles during training camp at the WNBA team's facility in Oakland
Nakase will be one of four head coaches of color in the WNBA this season
Seattle Storm coach Noelle Quinn is the only other female
Latricia Trammell became the first Native American or Alaska Native head coach
Only one-fourth of the head coaches in the league are Black
which is a sharp contrast to the fact that roughly 64% of WNBA players are Black or African American
according to a 2023 report from The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport
Hispanic/Latina and Asian players each account for 1.4%
Those who identify as mixed race amount to nearly 11%
The WNBA is on track to expand to 16 teams by 2028
This is all happening as women's sports at college and professional levels have seen a popularity surge in the last few years
Nakase was a Los Angeles Clippers assistant coach for 10 years before she joined the WNBA's Las Vegas Aces in a similar role
after the Aces won back-to-back championships
She believes the opportunity to be part of the movement happening in women's sports as the coach of the Valkyries couldn't have come at a better time
experiencing everything on a day to day on what it looks like
what they get and now coming here," Nakase said
Golden State Valkyries head coach Natalie Nakase
and assistant coach Sugar Rodgers during training camp at the WNBA team's facility in Oakland
Nakase's presence has electrified Bay Area Asian Americans who already were stoked to have a hometown WNBA team to support
had bought Valkyries season tickets for themselves and their daughters Adelaide
one of several Asian American youth teams around the Bay Area
Adelaide said she was "freaking out" when she found out an Asian American woman would be taking a lead in Dub Nation
who also grew up playing in an Asian American league
"I thought that was just so cool and it felt more so like she was part of our community already," Adelaide said
Both Nakase and Chen's presence have intensified Ashlyn's interest
laughs while talking with guard Kaitlyn Chen while being interviewed during training camp at the WNBA team's facility in Oakland
"I didn't really watch the WNBA like that much before," Ashlyn said
"but now that I see a lot of Asian representation ..
whose father founded a local basketball club over 30 years ago
said it's "the most wonderful thing that we could ever ask for
I think also it challenges the stereotypes and expands their views of what's possible."
It's "a symbol to all girls and boys alike in the Asian community," Nathan Chan added
Nakase embraces what she feels is a responsibility and thinks about how to use her new platform to encourage more girls on a daily basis
"What I feel like I'm going to connect more to also is more coaches," Nakase said
the impact of coaches is going to be the reason why other females — younger kids that look like me — that they're going to be inspired."

NEW YORK — President Donald Trump says he is directing the government to reopen and expand Alcatraz
the notorious former prison on a California island
President Donald Trump boards Air Force One at Palm Beach International Airport on Sunday in West Palm Beach
In a message on his Truth Social site Sunday evening
who will never contribute anything other than Misery and Suffering
we did not hesitate to lock up the most dangerous criminals
and keep them far away from anyone they could harm
to reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt ALCATRAZ
to house America’s most ruthless and violent Offenders," he wrote
adding: "The reopening of ALCATRAZ will serve as a symbol of Law
no one knows the fate of Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin to this day
although authorities believe they likely died in the treacherous waters of the San Francisco Bay
and Alcatraz Island is currently operated as a tourist site
The order comes as Trump has been clashing with the courts as he tries to send accused gang members to a notorious prison in El Salvador
Trump has also talked about wanting to send American citizens there and to other foreign prisons
President Donald Trump has made moves to expand the United States' already gargantuan carceral system
from mass deportation to harsher punishments for some crimes
are reliant on the federal government having access to more prison and jail cells
to enact his promises on immigration and crime and punishment
This lack of space is one of the major barriers to ramping up deportations, and ICE is limited by its budget. But Trump is now considering tapping into defense funds. Those funds "would allow civilian-run companies to quickly and rapidly expand temporary detention facilities," such as tents, according to NBC News
putting their safety—and that of employees—at risk
Yet another sign of a private prison infrastructure expansion is a report that the Trump administration is preparing to restart family immigrant detention, including incarcerating families with young children, and is expected to ask companies to bid for contracts, according to NBC News
he told sheriffs: "We need your bed space."
Homan promised to make it easier for local jails to incarcerate people for ICE by lowering detention standards and limiting the number of federal inspections
He said he hoped to eliminate federal rules and instead defer to state-level standards
it's good enough for an illegal immigrant detained for us," Homan said
Other state politicians have resisted cooperation with ICE. A law in Illinois prohibits local sheriffs from renting jail space for immigrant detention. Trump is now suing the state over the law
The president's search for more prison and jail cells for imprisoning both citizens and undocumented immigrants extends beyond U.S
legal to deport a non-citizen to a third country
the administration's effort to send three Venezuelan men to Guantánamo
Many have speculated that Trump's sending people to Guantánamo, like many of his immigration efforts, is an attempt to create a massive spectacle intended to project power and instill fear
But despite the significant legal and practical barriers
the Trump administration's numerous efforts to find more jail and prison cells indicate a clear desire to build a larger carceral system
Trump has styled himself as a "law and order" president and is using that frame in his efforts at expanded incarceration
But despite his wide-ranging moves to increase prison and jail space
he has been selective in who should be imprisoned or punished for illegal behavior

I am the manager at a low-income apartment complex for senior citizens and the disabled
We recently had to do some updates to the apartments that required all our residents to move out for several weeks
this was very difficult and stressful for most of the residents
I personally helped many of them pack and move boxes
I also found that several of our residents are struggling worse than I had thought
Two of these residents stood out when I helped pack their few belongings
There was not much food in their refrigerators
I helped fold tattered old clothing and bedding
Their beds were not even worth moving as they were sagging and stained
I hid my tears for these two forgotten individuals as I know they have no family to check on them
unlike most other tenants who receive family visitors or have friends that check on them
I am a single mother who barely gets by myself
so I understand living on the edge of poverty
I do not have the funds to help these people
but I know you have helped one of our residents in the past
I am hoping and praying The Time is Now to Help is once again able to help these two deserving people
The name and address that was on the letter were familiar and once I did my research I knew why
I remembered visiting this apartment building about six years ago and the handicapped woman we had helped
I also remembered the building having needed some repairs then and how I had brought them to the attention of the management company at the time
When I spoke to the apartment manager that wrote this letter requesting our assistance for two of her tenants
I was relieved to hear they had finally addressed the repairs that were needed
As we continued our conversation I learned more about the two tenants she felt needed our helping hand up
The first tenant was a 76-year-old woman that had extreme difficulties walking
She usually just got by on her social security
but the past two months have been even more difficult due to an emergency dental visit that she was struggling to make payments on
She also had not had any extra funds for clothing or other household needs for a very long time
The apartment manager told me her shoes were worn and broken
Her bed was so bad the elderly woman admitted she rarely slept in it
instead choosing to sleep in her old manual recliner
The apartment manager was emotional when she told me this chair was so worn that it would be the lesser of two evils
The second tenant she was worried about was a disabled man
He was in his 60’s and had been in a car accident over 40 years ago that had left him unable to walk or stand for long periods
He had never been able to afford anything beyond his most basic needs for many years
and that is what the apartment manager had witnessed firsthand when she helped him pack
He had told the apartment manager several times he wished for a lift chair to help him to his feet
The apartment manager knew these two were lucky to have a roof over their heads
but also knew they struggled day to day and that could be improved by any poverty relief we could provide
This poverty relief would come in the form of new beds for both tenants
We also would provide new bedding for both beds
New lift chairs would be delivered for both tenants as well as they both struggled to get in and out of chairs
Gift cards were provided for new clothing and food for both tenants
with the apartment manager offering to take them shopping on her next day off
She also had found two volunteers at her church that offered to visit and to continue to help these tenants in the future
Several weeks later the apartment manager called me back and joyfully shared the gratitude her tenants had felt
She was with the elderly woman when she called
and I listened as she cried tears of thanks for the improvements we had made in her life
Since she had new clothing for the first time in years
she was no longer embarrassed to attend church with the volunteer
had made a profound difference in these two lives that were helped thanks to all of us coming together to remove the pains of poverty for our fellow creations

it's no secret that coffee is the drink of choice for many starting their day
From the importance of sourcing high quality green beans
We take an inside look into the coffee roasting process
Reneé Colón stands on a stepladder in the rented corner of a warehouse
pouring Brazilian coffee beans into her groaning old roasting machine
The beans are precious because they survived severe drought in a year when environmental conditions depressed coffee production globally
doubling the price of raw beans in just months
coffee is going to become more scarce," said Colón
founder and roaster at Fuego Coffee Roasters
"Seeing that dramatic loss of the Brazilian crop is a perfect example."
Losses from heat and drought have cut production forecasts in Brazil and Vietnam
Global production is still expected to increase
but not as much as commodity market investors had expected
largely because of continued high demand in Europe
Prices peaked in February but have remained high
forcing roasters like Colón to weigh how much of that cost to absorb and how much to pass on to consumers
The beans Colón was roasting cost her $5.50 per pound in early March
more than double what they cost in September
Specialty coffees — grown in delicate climates to slow growth and add flavor — can cost even more
President Donald Trump's current 10% tariffs cover most coffee-producing countries
and are expected to drive up costs for Americans
Amid his chaotic tariff pronouncements — at one point he threatened 46% tariffs on Vietnam imports and 32% on Indonesia imports before pausing them — American coffee roasters are rethinking their supply chains
"With all these changes in coffee maybe we should open our own damn farm," Colón muses
Coffee beans fall into the cooling tray of a roasting machine at Fuego Coffee Roasters' roasting facility
The world's best coffee thrives near the equator
where slow growing allows beans to gather flavor
either — labor costs are too high and she worries about the increasing risk of crop-damaging hurricanes
She shrugs off buying coffee from Hawaii and California
global coffee green exports were down 14.2% from a year earlier
according to the International Coffee Organization's market report
The shortage led to the highest price ever for raw coffee in February
breaking the record set in 1977 when severe frost wiped out 70% of Brazil's coffee plants
Climate isn't the only thing driving up prices
a buyer for San Francisco-based Ritual Coffee Roasters
She described being in Mexico in April seeking to finalize contracts between Trump's fits and starts on tariffs
It reminded her of being in Colombia a month earlier as Trump threatened and then backed away from tariffs that would have affected coffee prices
because at the end of the day it didn't exist," Whalen said
Some of the recent rise in coffee prices may be from importers buying extra in anticipation of the tariffs
Colón believes prices will go still higher as import taxes begin being paid
And with consumer confidence hitting a 12-year low
Colón could see a decrease in demand for her premium coffee
"It is tough on our end because it drives the price up
tough on the consumer end because they have to pay more and tough on the farmers' end because they may be experiencing really significant losses," Colón said
make coffee at Fuego Coffee Roasters in Rochester
she and her husband took out a $50,000 loan to buy a custom coffee roaster from Turkey that will triple capacity
They're trying to increase sales by adding new wholesale clients like coffee shops
and selling directly to homes via a beans-of-the-month-style subscription service
The Colóns have raised the wholesale price on a pound of roasted beans by 25 cents
They're considering doing the same for pour-overs and espresso drinks at their two retail locations
one couple said they don't look at the coffee's price on the receipt
"We know we could go find coffee cheaper somewhere else," said Rob Newell
as he held a cooing infant daughter alongside his wife
"Maybe it's just because we're new parents
cabin fever staying in the house all day."
The warehouse where she roasts has some extra space
so she's weighing stacking up more bags of raw beans there to save as much as $500 on monthly storage costs in port cities
She's tried to cultivate relationships with farmers to minimize price spikes and control bean quality
She described working with a farmer in Colombia as coffee prices were spiking in February to lock in a one-year contract that avoided the worst of the increase
she's had to get used to the complexity of tariffs
she turned down a pitch from a Montreal coffee importer who suggested the U.S
dollar's strength in Canada would allow her to save money by importing through their warehouse
She feared that tariffs on Canada could increase prices
the coffee would have to cross an extra border
And the value of the dollar has been up and down
"I want things to be less complicated instead of more," she said

crafted in a World War 2 concentration camp
An art expert couple stumbled upon the instrument by chance
when they accidentally uncovered a secret message
within the walls of the Nazi concentration camp at Dachau
a Jewish prisoner secretly penned a short note and hid it inside a violin he had crafted under harrowing circumstances — a message to the future that would remain undiscovered for more than 80 years
made under difficult conditions with no tools and materials,” the worn note read
Dachau'' is visible seen through the f-holes of a Dachau-built instrument dubbed the ''violin of hope'' April 22 in Magyarpolány
built in 1941 by Franciszek “Franz” Kempa while imprisoned by the Nazis at Dachau in southern Germany
It wasn’t until art dealers in Hungary sent the instrument out for repairs — after having stored it for years among a set of purchased furniture — that its history came to light
Although the instrument's craftsmanship pointed clearly to a skilled maker
the professional repairing it was puzzled by the poor quality of the wood and the crude tools used to create it
which didn’t match the evident skill involved
and Szandra Katona inspect a Dachau-built instrument dubbed the ''violin of hope'' April 22 in Magyarpolány
“If you look at its proportions and structure
made by a man who was proficient in his craft,” said Szandra Katona
one of the Hungarian art dealers who discovered the origins of the violin
“But the choice of wood was completely incomprehensible.”
revealing Kempa’s hidden note — an apparent explanation
from a master violin maker forced by the brutal limitations of his captivity to build an instrument that fell short of his own standards
was the first concentration camp established by the Nazis in March 1933
It initially housed political prisoners but later became a model for other camps
homosexuals and others targeted by the Nazi regime
and remained in operation until it was liberated by American forces on April 29
At least 40,000 people are believed to have died there due to starvation
Tags from its maker are seen inside a Dachau-built instrument dubbed the ''violin of hope'' Sept
There is ample evidence that musical instruments were present in concentration camps across Central and Eastern Europe during World War II
the Nazis often permitted or even encouraged the formation of musical groups to give a false impression to the outside world about life in the camps
all known instruments that survived Dachau are believed to have been brought in by prisoners
Kempa’s “violin of hope,” as it has come to be called
is the only known instrument actually built inside the camp
A handwritten and hidden tag in Silesian dialect (mix of Polish and German) inside a Dachau-build instrument dubbed the ''violin of hope'' reads: ''Trial instrument
made under difficult conditions with no tools and materials
It is unknown how the violin left Dachau and ultimately made its way to Hungary
according to documents provided to the Hungarian art dealers by the museum at the Dachau memorial site
survived the war and returned to his native Poland to continue making instruments before dying in 1953
The documents also suggest that Kempa was known to the Nazis as an instrument maker — something Tamás Tálosi
believes may have spared him the fate of millions of others who perished in the camps
“We named it the ‘violin of hope’ because if someone ends up in a difficult situation
having a task or a challenge helps them get through a lot of things,” Tálosi said
and I think this helped the maker of this instrument to survive the concentration camp.”

Workers are using a homemade puppet fashioned to look like an adult king vulture to feed a chick that hatched in late February
A king vulture feeds with the help of a vulture puppet in March at the Bronx Zoo in the Bronx borough of New York
NEW YORK — A baby vulture at a New York zoo is being fed not by another bird but by hand puppet — a decades-old technique used to ensure the chick doesn’t identify too closely with its human handlers
so hand-feeding is necessary to ensure the baby survives
But to make sure it doesn't imprint on humans
staff train the bird's instincts onto a hand puppet that's crafted to look like a real vulture
our animal care staff are feeding the chick with the Bronx Zoo-made puppet once a day and we are working to ensure it does not imprint on humans," Bronx Zoo Curator of Ornithology Chuck Cerbini said in a statement

Footage of a feeding session shows someone with their arm clad in black and a puppet that looks like a vulture’s face and beak on their hand
which is used to grab morsels of food and deliver them to the chick’s mouth
An adult king vulture is placed in an adjacent enclosure that “allows the chick to have exposure to appropriate king vulture behavior," Cerbini said

The zoo says it helped develop the feeding technique more than four decades ago when workers there used it to raise three Andean condor chicks
which were then released into the wild in Peru
Hand-puppet rearing has also been used to help bring back the critically endangered California condor

The Conference Board’s Consumer Expectations Index hit its lowest point in 12 years
WASHINGTON — Americans' confidence in the economy slumped for the fifth straight month to the lowest level since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic as anxiety over the impact of tariffs takes a heavy toll
The Conference Board said Tuesday that its consumer confidence index fell 7.9 points in April to 86
Nearly one-third of consumers expect hiring to slow in the coming months
nearly matching the level reached in April 2009
when the economy was mired in the Great Recession
The figures reflect a rapidly souring mood among Americans
most of whom expect prices to rise because of the widespread tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump
About half of Americans are also worried about the potential for a recession
according to a survey by The Associated Press-NORC Center
“Rattled consumers spend less than confident consumers," said Carl Weinberg
chief economist at High Frequency Economics
“If confidence sags and consumers retrench

economic growth during the first three months of the year
and economists are expecting a sharp slowdown as Americans pulled back on spending after a strong winter holiday shopping season
And on Friday the Labor Department will release its latest report on hiring and the unemployment rate
economists expect it should still show steady job gains
though some forecast it could report sharply reduced hiring
The stark decline in consumer confidence also likely reflected the sharp swings in stock and bond prices that roiled financial markets earlier this month
While all age groups and most income brackets reported lower confidence
the decline was steepest among households earning more than $125,000 and among consumers 35 to 55 years old
the S&P 500 is still down 6% for the year and the Dow Jones has lost 5%
The growth-heavy Nasdaq is down 10% in 2025
The Conference Board said that mentions of tariffs in write-in responses reached an all-time high this month
with the duties on the top of consumers' minds
Trump has imposed a tariff of 10% on nearly all imports
as well as a huge 145% tariff on most goods from China
He has imposed separate import taxes on steel
More Americans are also now worried that the economy could tip into a recession
with the proportion of consumers expecting a downturn in the next 12 months reaching a two-year high
Fewer consumers said they were planning to buy a home or car in the next six months
homes slowed last month in a lackluster start to the spring homebuying season as elevated mortgage rates and rising prices discouraged those looking
And Americans also said they would spend less on services
The proportion of Americans planning an overseas vacation in the next six months fell to 16.4%
And the proportion of consumers planning to spend more on dining out plummeted by nearly the most on record in April

As I rounded the final curve of the winding lakeside road
The Abbey Resort’s iconic A-frame entrance came into view
silhouetted against the shimmering waters of Lake Geneva
I felt the tension in my shoulders begin to melt away
Just 90 minutes from Chicago but worlds away from city life
I had arrived at my sanctuary for the weekend
Walking through the doors of this historic resort
I was immediately struck by how the recent renovations had preserved its classic charm while infusing modern luxury
The lobby’s warm wood tones and nautical accents created an inviting atmosphere that whispered
Sprawling across 90 acres of pristine shoreline
The Abbey Resort felt both grand and intimate at the same time
one of 334 guestrooms including 13 luxurious suites
offered a perfect balance of comfort and elegance
The nautical-inspired décor reminded me that I was in a true lakeside retreat
The crown jewel of my stay had to be the Avani Spa
this recently renovated wellness haven became my daily escape
I woke early for a swim in the indoor domed pool—a magical experience as sunlight filtered through the glass
it transforms into a snow globe experience as flakes fall gently on the dome above swimmers
I indulged in one of their signature treatments
The therapist explained that “Avani” means “earth” in Sanskrit
the experience grounded me in ways I hadn’t felt in months
What makes Lake Geneva special is the perfect balance of relaxation and activity
I rented a boat one afternoon and explored the 21-mile shoreline
marveling at the historic mansions that fringe the lake
many built by wealthy Chicago families after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871
I discovered there was never a shortage of things to do
The weekend brought live entertainment at the Waterfront restaurant
where I sipped a craft cocktail while watching the sunset paint the sky in spectacular oranges and pinks
I watched children delight in scavenger hunts
The resort truly comes alive with family Olympics and magic performances that had both children and adults gasping in amazement
The dining options at The Abbey surprised me with their quality and variety
From casual lakeside fare at the Waterfront to more refined offerings at 240° West
I joined a small cooking demonstration where the chef showcased local Wisconsin ingredients in innovative preparations
“We try to capture the essence of the Midwest with our menu,” the chef explained as he plated a perfectly seared walleye
“It’s comfort food elevated.”
I chatted with a family who had made The Abbey their Easter tradition
They described the resort’s Easter Brunch as legendary
followed by egg hunts on the Harbor Lawn and visits with baby animals that delighted their children
The mother confided that the special Abbey Easter delivery to their room—filled with toys
cookies and candy—had become the highlight of their children’s spring
While I could have happily spent my entire stay within the resort grounds
Lake Geneva offers a wealth of attractions beyond The Abbey
I hiked a portion of the 21-mile Shore Path
a public walkway that has allowed access around the entire lake since the 19th century and explored the charming downtown area
Jet d’eau – The city’s iconic water fountain shooting 140 meters into the air
creating a spectacular backdrop for photos
Bains des Paquis – A beloved public bathhouse where you can swim
Boat ride on Lake Leman – Experience the crystalline waters and gain a new perspective of the shoreline
The Riviera – An elegant promenade with Mediterranean-inspired architecture and sweeping lake views
Lake Geneva Cruise Line – Offers fascinating narrated tours about the historic mansions lining the shore
Lake Geneva Ziplines & Adventures – For thrill-seekers looking for an adrenaline rush
Safari Lake Geneva – A unique wildlife experience right in Wisconsin
Harbourside Pub & Grill – Waterfront dining with an expansive patio and impressive selection of local craft beers
Popeye’s – A Lake Geneva institution since 1972
known for rotisserie chicken and harbor views
Olympic Restaurant – Family-owned establishment offering Greek-inspired breakfast specialties
Oak Fire – Wood-fired pizza with locally-sourced toppings and perfectly crisp crusts
Lake Geneva Spice Company – Not just a restaurant but a culinary destination for exotic spice blends
The Geneva Stage and Tap House – Combines live music with craft beers and excellent pub fare
Genevieve Boutique – Carefully curated collection of women’s clothing and accessories
Edie Boutique – Beautiful lake-inspired jewelry and unique gifts
Pink Moon Bay – Boho-chic fashion capturing the relaxed elegance of lake living
Bangles & Bags – Dazzling selection of statement accessories and handbags
Queen Bee Artisan Market – Charming collective featuring works from local artists and craftspeople
Fat Cat’s – Vintage ice cream parlor offering generous scoops and nostalgic charm
Between The Abbey Resort’s comprehensive amenities and these local treasures
Lake Geneva offers something for every type of traveler
My favorite moments came at the edges of each day
Early mornings spent walking the resort’s grounds
listening to migrating birds singing from ancient oak trees
And evenings watching the sun set over the marina
casting long shadows across the harbor as boats gently rocked at their moorings
I joined a lakeside bonfire where guests shared stories and roasted marshmallows
with the gentle lapping of waves as our soundtrack
I felt connected not just to the place but to the generations who had enjoyed this same simple pleasure over the resort’s nearly six decades of history
Perhaps in summer to experience the full range of water activities
or during the holidays when I’m told the resort transforms into a winter wonderland
to experience the family traditions I’d heard so much about—brunch
I took one last look at the lake from the resort’s perfectly manicured grounds
The deep breath I took felt different from the stressed inhale I’d arrived with just days before
Lake Geneva and The Abbey Resort had worked their magic
the iconic A-frame growing smaller in my rearview mirror
I carried with me not just memories but a renewed spirit
The Abbey Resort isn’t just a destination—it’s an experience that stays with you long after you’ve returned to everyday life
And like the many generational visitors I’d met during my stay
I knew this wouldn’t be a one-time visit
and there are several ways to enjoy the event in the Lake Geneva area
ranging from hat-centric affairs to a dinner train in East Troy
Topsy Turvy Brewery is one of the participants in this year’s Taste of Lake Geneva

NEW YORK — Amazon says it's not planning to list added tariff costs next to product prices on its site — despite speculation spanning from a report that claimed the e-commerce giant would soon show new import charges
as well as fiery comments from President Donald Trump's White House denouncing such a move
The Trump administration's reaction appeared to be based on a misinterpretation of internal plans being considered by Amazon
rather than a final decision made by the company
Only Amazon's Haul service — its recently launched
low-cost storefront — "considered the idea" of listing import charges on certain products
company spokesperson Tim Doyle said in a statement sent to The Associated Press
But this "was never approved and is not going to happen."
Punchbowl News had reported that Amazon planned to start showing how much of each product's cost derived from tariffs "right next to" its total listed price
citing an anonymous source familiar with the matter
While Amazon later confirmed that it would not be listing such added costs
the Trump administration was quick to criticize news of the potential move
told The Associated Press that the president also called Amazon founder Jeff Bezos to complain about the reported plans Tuesday morning
At a briefing with reporters earlier in the day
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said she had spoken with Trump "about Amazon's announcement" and accused the company of taking a "hostile and political act." And she further attacked the company by suggesting it was un-American
"Amazon has partnered with a Chinese propaganda arm," Leavitt said
The administration seemed to change its tune some following Amazon's clarifying statement
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick wrote in a response on X
Amazon's Bezos was one of a handful of powerful
ultra-wealthy tech titans who attended Trump's inauguration in January — filling some of the most exclusive seats right behind the president
Whether his relationship with Trump has strained since is unknown
but the trade wars launched by Trump have plunged companies into uncertainty around the world
Trump's tariffs — and responding retaliation from targeted countries
notably China — threaten to increase prices for both consumers and businesses
Economists warn that these import taxes will hike prices for a range of goods consumers buy each day — and lead to worse inflationary pressure
Many CEOs and companies have shared weaker outlooks due to the steep — and at times on-again
And some big names have already raised prices
Temu and Shein said in separate but nearly identical notices that their operating expenses had gone up "due to recent changes in global trade rules and tariffs" — both announcing price hikes to take effect April 25
owned by the Chinese e-commerce company PDD Holdings
now lists added "import charges" — which have reportedly doubled many items' prices
although those available in local warehouses currently appear to be exempt
"Tariffs are included in the price you pay
You'll never have to pay extra at delivery."
AP White House correspondent Zeke Miller contributed to this report
Since the Trump administration raised tariffs on goods from China to 145%
major orders were canceled and products were stranded overseas
UPS said Tuesday that it anticipates making the job cuts this year
It anticipates closing 73 leased and owned buildings by the end of June
E-commerce company Amazon denied a report saying it will show customers the increased cost of the Trump tariffs on items they purchase
Americans' confidence in the economy slumped for the fifth straight month to the lowest level since the onset of the COIVD-19 pandemic
The White House on Monday opened a weeklong celebration of Donald Trump's first 100 days in office by focusing on his border crackdown
The survey finds many people fear the country is being steered into a recession and Trump’s broad and haphazardly enforced tariffs will cause …

Lake Geneva has, once again, been voted among the best small towns in the Midwest, according to a new ranking by USA TODAY's 10Best
it placed fifth on a list of the 10 best towns in the Midwest with populations fewer than 25,000
Lake Geneva was nominated by an expert panel and then voted onto the list by readers
Here's what makes Lake Geneva a standout Midwest town and which other spots made the ranking
Though it's well-known for its scenic lake views and rich natural landscape
Lake Geneva has even more to offer visitors
The area is home to an array of local shops, waterfront restaurants and accommodations ranging from campgrounds to upscale resorts
making it one of the most popular summer destinations in Wisconsin
so the town is ideal for freshwater activities like paddleboarding
"Elegant Lake Geneva, once a retreat for Chicago’s elite during the Gilded Age, is renowned for its mansions, best viewed on a scenic boat tour or while walking the around 20-mile Geneva Lake Shore Path," USA TODAY added
Here's which other towns were voted among the best in the Midwest by readers of USA TODAY's 10Best:
The weeks since President Donald Trump returned to office have been a whirlwind of activity to show Americans his administration is relentlessly pursuing his promises
Since President Donald Trump returned to office
every week has been a whirlwind of activity to show Americans that his administration is relentlessly pursuing his promises
Trump has faced lawsuits over his attempts to surge deportations
punish law firms and slash the federal workforce
All of that and more is being adjudicated in courtrooms
meaning much of what he's done could come undone
President Donald Trump holds up an executive order after signing it Jan

Here's a look at where progress on his promises stands:
"We're going to get those prices down," he told voters
Prices have come down — before Trump took office and since
Inflation has been falling since a peak of 9.1% in 2022
But the Federal Reserve has warned that the president's tariff plans will most likely lead to higher prices by taxing foreign imports
Trump has clearly made progress on a signature promise to control the border
The number of people trying to cross illegally into the United States from Mexico dropped steeply in President Joe Biden's last year
from a high of 249,740 in December 2023 to 47,324 in December 2024
the numbers sank to only 8,346 in February and 7,181 in March
It's unclear whether he's matching Biden's aggressive deportation record last year — the numbers are not yet in
Immigration and Customs Enforcement is arresting large numbers of people across the country
Many who assert their innocence have been deported without due process
Trump vowed in the campaign: "I will impose across-the-board tariffs on most foreign-made goods."
Trump began by escalating tariffs on Canada
ostensibly as punishment for allowing fentanyl into the U.S
Then he announced even more widespread taxes on foreign imports on April 2
part of what he described as "Liberation Day." Trump retreated from parts of that plan
but he left in place tariffs on China as high as 145%
The stock market has whipsawed from the hefty import taxes and the erraticism in their application

Trump promised peace between Russia and Ukraine merely by winning the election
I will have the horrible war between Russia and Ukraine settled," he told a Detroit conference in August
he'd been making the same vow at least since May
Trump has tested the limits of what he can do by decree
but he'll need Congress to achieve his promised tax cuts
and he said he will make permanent the expiring tax cuts he enacted during his first term
the tax burden is on track to get worse before it possibly gets better
Trump is working with Republicans in Congress to push through legislation achieving the tax cuts
Trump's threats to choke off billions in tax dollars to many universities flow from multiple promises in the campaign — to combat antisemitism on campuses
equity and inclusion programs and to rid campuses of foreign students he considers hostile to American values
After several other prominent schools signaled their willingness to comply with Trump's demands
Trump has called for withdrawing Harvard's tax-exempt status
has threatened to block it from enrolling foreign students and has frozen more than $2 billion in grants and contracts
Trump's promised agenda against "woke" policy swept quickly through the government
as DEI programs from the Biden years were halted and references to diversity in federal communications were purged
as thousands of images on webpages and other online content were flagged for removal
An image of the Enola Gay bomber from World War II was flagged for deletion — because of the word "gay" — as were materials paying tribute to Black and Navajo war heroes and pioneering women
Most of the targeted material ultimately survived
An executive order from Trump on "restoring truth and sanity to American history" forbids federal money to Smithsonian programs that promote "improper ideology."
Trump campaigned against the participation of transgender athletes in sports and against broader moves in society
especially in Democratic-led jurisdictions
to accommodate views that gender is not inherently binary
he has signed executive orders to ban transgender athletes from girls' and women's teams
and he's asked the Supreme Court to rule against lower courts that have blocked his attempt to remove transgender troops from the military

LAKE GENEVA — I recently discovered something about a Wisconsin town that was both interesting and a little shocking
they think about the beautiful homes along the lake
But at the same time as some of the first mansions were being built
Lake Geneva was known for something else: sanitariums
there were five sanitariums in Lake Geneva
The sanitariums mostly acted like hospitals for those with cognitive and developmental disabilities
People were put in them for good and bad purposes
Some people were “ladies who were incorrigible or spoke against their husbands or their families," Sonja Akright said
She works at the Geneva Lake Museum and wrote the book 'The Sanitariums of Lake Geneva'
There's an exhibit on sanitariums at the museum
There were no straight jackets or metal cots
The weekly rates in the late 1800s and early 1900s started around $50
“So like the medical facility was basically a hospital you could check yourself in
was more where people from outside of town would tuck their folks to be away," Akright said
It's where the wealthy from all over the country sent their family members
“We don’t want this around our family or our society
the resort town kind of made them feel better about it.”
Oscar King started four of the five sanitariums in Lake Geneva
No lobotomies were performed at these facilities; however
patients also experienced equine therapy which was relatively unconventional for the time period
"Theres a lot of ghost stories around the 40s
and 60s about lobotomies and the things that were happening there that were absolutely not true
the more I found he was not a horrible person
He was not doing horrible things to these people" Akright said
The sanitariums brought a ton of money to the town
When these wealthy families would visit their loved ones
The tax revenue also supported Lake Geneva
There was also a children’s sanitarium with a pretty big scandal
“So what happened was some nurses decided to take two children hostage for their back pay," Akright said
They called the Chicago Tribune which wrote a story about the incident
The two nurses were jailed and didn't get their backpay
all five of the sanitariums closed by 1930
we were moving away from the astigmatism (sic) of having to hide these people and not being able to talk about it to putting them into day programs trying to incorporate them into the world," Akright said
After decades of neglect, vacancy, and a few fires, three of the buildings were eventually demolished. One of those demolished buildings was well known in the community since young kids would sneak in and explore its remnants. Gary Gygax, the co-creator of Dungeons and Dragons
wrote in a newspaper article how some of his experiences exploring the sanitarium influenced parts of the legendary game
Watch the story to see more images of Lake Geneva's luxurious sanitariums
Akright is still discovering new material about the sanitariums
She will update the museum's exhibit by the end of 2025 to reflect all the new information
The current exhibit is open Friday through Monday during the winter
Those times will expand in the spring and summer

The Markup reports that after California's health insurance exchange transmitted pregnancy and domestic abuse data during a marketing campaign
the exchange is reviewing its website practices
The website that lets Californians shop for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act, coveredca.com, has been sending sensitive data to LinkedIn, forensic testing by The Markup has revealed.
As visitors filled out forms on the website
trackers on the same pages told LinkedIn their answers to questions about whether they were blind
or used a high number of prescription medications
The trackers also monitored whether the visitors said they were transgender or possible victims of domestic abuse
the organization that operates the website
removed the trackers as The Markup and CalMatters reported this article
The organization said they were removed "due to a marketing agency transition" in early April.
confirmed that data was sent to LinkedIn as part of an advertising campaign
"all active advertising-related tags across our website have been turned off out of an abundance of caution," she added.
"Covered California has initiated a review of our websites and information security and privacy protocols to ensure that no analytics tools are impermissibly sharing sensitive consumer information," Donohue said
adding that they would "share additional findings as they become available
taking any necessary steps to safeguard the security and privacy of consumer data."
Visitors who filled out health information on the site may have had their data tracked for more than a year
who said the LinkedIn campaign began in February 2024.
The Markup observed the trackers directly in February and March of this year
have been removed from the site as of April 21.
Covered California operates as an independent entity within the state government. Its board is appointed by the governor and Legislature.
the state's health insurance program for lower-income households
Experts expressed alarm at the idea that those millions of people could have had sensitive health data sent to a private company without their knowledge or consent
senior counsel at the Electronic Privacy Information Center
said it was "concerning and invasive" for a health insurance website to be sending data that was "wholly irrelevant" to the uses of a for-profit company like LinkedIn
"because people don't expect that their health information will be collected and used in this way."
The Markup and CalMatters in recent months scanned for trackers on hundreds of California state and county government websites that offer services for undocumented immigrants using Blacklight
an automated tool developed by The Markup for auditing website trackers.
The Markup found that Covered California had more than 60 trackers on its site
Out of more than 200 of the government sites
the average number of trackers on the sites was three
Covered California had dozens more than any other website we examined.
On coveredca.com
trackers from well-known social media firms like Meta collected information on visitor page views
while lesser-known analytics and media campaign companies like email marketing company LiveIntent also followed users across the site.
But by far the most sensitive information was transmitted to LinkedIn.
While some of the data sent to LinkedIn was relatively innocuous
Covered California also sent the company detailed information when visitors selected doctors to see if they were covered by a plan
The site also told LinkedIn if someone searched for a specific hospital
In addition to demographic information including gender, the site also shared details with LinkedIn when visitors selected their ethnicity and marital status, and when they told coveredca.com how often they saw doctors for surgery or outpatient treatment.
a tracker on a page might be able to note when someone added a product to their cart
and the business can then send ads for that product to the same person on their social media feeds.
A health care marketplace like Covered California might use the trackers to reach a group of people who might be interested in a reminder of a deadline for open health insurance enrollment
Covered California noted the usefulness of these tools
saying the organization "leverages LinkedIn's advertising platform tools to understand consumer behavior and deliver tailored messages to help them make informed decisions about their health care options."
Trackers can also be valuable to the social media companies that offer them
they provide an opportunity to gather information on visitors to websites other than their own
On its informational page about the Insight Tag
LinkedIn places the burden on websites that employ the tag not to use it in risky situations
The tag "should not be installed on web pages that collect or contain Sensitive Data," the page advises
including "pages offering specific health-related or financial services or products to consumers."
LinkedIn spokesperson Brionna Ruff said in an emailed statement
"Our Ads Agreement and documentation expressly prohibit customers from installing the Insight Tag on web pages that collect or contain sensitive data
including pages offering health-related services
We don't allow advertisers to target ads based on sensitive data or categories."
Collection of sensitive information by social media trackers has in previous instances led to removal of the trackers
and scrutiny by state and federal lawmakers
LinkedIn is already facing multiple proposed class-action lawsuits related to the collection of medical information. In October, three new lawsuits in California courts alleged that LinkedIn violated users' privacy by collecting information on medical appointment sites
Social media companies' tracking practices have underpinned the tremendous growth of the tech industry
but few web users are aware of how far the tracking goes
"This absolutely contradicts the expectation of the average consumer," Geoghegan said
Geoghegan said current protections like these don't go far enough in helping consumers protect their sensitive data
"This is an exact example of why we need better protections," she said of LinkedIn receiving the data
"This is sensitive health information that consumers expect to be protected and a lack of regulations is failing us."

LAKE GENEVA, Wis. — USA Today released this year’s ranking of the top 10 small towns in the Midwest — and Wisconsin’s Lake Geneva made the list
the lakeside town is a popular place to visit in Wisconsin’s warmer months
once a retreat for Chicago’s elite during the Gilded Age
best viewed on a scenic boat tour or while walking the around 20-mile Geneva Lake Shore Path,” USA Today said about the town.
USA Today ranked the town fifth on its list
All the towns that made USA Today’s best Midwestern small towns list have a population under 25,000 people.
This is not the first time Lake Geneva has received national recognition
It was named the best small town for adventure by USA Today in 2019
It was also the runner-up for "Best Small Town for Adventure" in 2020 and runner-up for "Best Wisconsin Attraction" in 2017.
USA Today’s full list of the best small Midwest towns included:
The last small towns in Wisconsin to make the list were Bayfield and Mineral Point in 2023
Wisconsin was not represented in 2024's ranking.
NEXT reveals a landscape of potential ideas for entrepreneurs who can innovate and meet evolving market needs in retail and online retail
The retail and e-commerce sectors present significant entrepreneurial opportunities despite global economic shifts and geopolitical uncertainties
For those who can innovate and meet evolving market needs
While challenges like inflation and increasing competition persist, some of the fastest-growing retail and e-commerce businesses show resilience by offering consumers greater convenience, affordability and personalized experiences, NEXT says
Many opportunities exist when paired with emerging trends
especially for businesses that tap into growing sectors like wellness and sustainable products
In the past decade, Korean and Japanese beauty trends in the U.S. have gained tremendous ground. In 2024, Korean cosmetics alone ranked first in the U.S. import cosmetics market share (beating out France's Chanel and Lancome for the first time) capturing 22% of the market with a value of $1.4 billion
Consumers are looking for the next new thing in skin care routines
gentle ingredients and innovative packaging
Retail beauty entrepreneurs can tap into this market by curating a line of Asian beauty products in a subscription box
Also a possibility for entrepreneurs: A beauty concierge service with personal shopping assistance and recommendations
or partnerships with brands or distributors to offer direct-to-consumer products
If you're knowledgeable about what these cosmetics can do
you could also organize workshops and create classes to educate consumers about trends
The global secondhand apparel market is projected to reach $350 billion by 2028
economic challenges and a love for unique items
and Poshmark are booming for secondhand apparel resale
But our desire to keep gently used products out of the landfill does not stop with clothing. Niche vintage and secondhand resellers for vintage furniture (like Chairish), used sporting goods (like SidelineSwap), and musical instruments (Elderly.com) are also on the grow
This greater marketplace beyond clothing could be worth $64 billion by 2032
If you've ever been looking at a silly gadget on Instagram—and then clicked to buy it on the spot—then you're well aware of what it means to be swayed to purchase on social media
Social commerce refers to a change in retail channels rather than a swing in a subset of goods and services. And this new way to buy—integrated online shopping within your favorite social media platform—is expected to exceed the $100 billion mark in 2025 (a 22% growth from last year)
This trend opens up opportunities for businesses to reach customers through engaging social content
shoppable posts and partnerships with influencers
Business owners can use social commerce to build a more direct relationship with their audience and drive highly interactive and visually engaging sales
If you want to move your goods in a new (old) way
add live shopping events to your retail strategy
host exclusive meet-n-greet and Q&A events
and showcase products through interactive demonstrations
And remember that limited-time offers during livestreams can help encourage sales
Got a pampered pet at home? You're not alone. Due to the increasing number of pet owners, their humanization of their pets and their willingness to spend a premium, Americans spent over $147 billion on pets in 2023 and growing
The shift in shopping habits for Fido, Fifi and beyond, particularly with Millennials and Gen Z
has led to increased spending on big ticket pet goods and services
Capitalize on the growing demand for premium pet food and treats
particularly if it has the value-add of organic
And there's still an appetite for unique pet apparel
toys and grooming items at a giftable price point
With inflation and job insecurity pushing 38% of workers to seek freelance employment
small businesses can benefit from this ample and educated workforce by outsourcing specialized tasks like marketing
customer service and web development to freelance workers
Products like gut-healthy kombucha, probiotic snacks and nutrient-packed smoothie kits have grown in popularity for people who want good food that they feel supports their health. And small business owners are growing the functional food market city by city
A subset of this trend is personalized nutrition (also called precision nutrition)
which tailors a diet to a customer's unique health goals
or products for specific conditions like diabetes or low energy
Customized meals like build-your-own bowls or salads let diners tailor their breakfast, lunch or dinner to their specific dietary need, be it high-protein, low-glycemic, etc. And according to a panel hosted by the Specialty Food Association (SFA)
other opportunities for food businesses include customizable snacks
and new foods and flavors with targeted health benefits

Shedeur Sanders's slide to the 5th round of the NFL draft shocked many
yet his future in Cleveland appears bright
Shedeur Sanders' slide down the NFL draft was the dominant story of the weekend with one of college football's most high-profile players lasting until the fifth round
The fact that Sanders was taken by the Browns two rounds after they drafted another quarterback in Dillon Gabriel made the entire situation even more rare
The Browns were the first team to draft two quarterbacks in the first five rounds of the NFL draft since Washington did it in 2012 when the team traded up to take Robert Griffin III with the second overall pick and then drafted Kirk Cousins in the fourth round
A screen shows Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders after being chosen by the Cleveland Browns with the 144th overall pick during the third day of the NFL football draft
There are only a handful of other times in the common draft era beginning in 1967 that a team picked two quarterbacks that high in the draft
Green Bay drafted Anthony Dilweg in the third round and Jeff Graham in the fourth in 1989
The Packers traded Graham to Washington later in the draft and he never played a game in the NFL despite spending time with several teams
The Colts double-dipped at quarterback in 1982
taking Art Schlichter fourth overall and Mike Pagel in the fourth round
Schlichter played only 13 games because of gambling problems
while Pagel had a long career mostly as a backup
The Houston Oilers also did it in 1971 taking Dan Pastorini in the first round and Lynn Dickey in the third
Both had long careers as starters in the NFL
The Jets took Kellen Clemens in the second round and Brad Smith in the fourth in 2006
Clemens spent 12 seasons in the NFL mostly as a backup
while Smith had a successful career as a receiver
returner and occasional wildcat quarterback
The Raiders took quarterbacks with their first two picks in 1968 but first-rounder Eldrige Dickey moved to receiver following his first training camp and had only five catches in his career
Second-rounder Ken Stabler went on to the 1974 AP NFL MVP and had a Hall of Fame career as a quarterback
the Jacksonville Jaguars first round draft pick
strikes a Heisman pose while holding a jersey during an NFL football press conference
Trading up for a top two pick in the NFL draft isn't that uncommon with it happening five times in the last 13 drafts before this season
The deal made by Jacksonville with Cleveland to move up from No
2 to take Travis Hunter marked the first time since 1997 that a team traded up that high to draft a non-quarterback
It happened twice in 1997 with the Raiders trading up to No
2 that year before the Rams jumped them two weeks later to trade for the No
The Rams took Hall of Famer Orlando Pace and the Raiders drafted Darrell Russell
There hadn't been a receiver taken in the top two since Calvin Johnson went second to Detroit in 2007 and no defensive back had been taken that high since safety Eric Turner went second to Cleveland in 1991
There were 12 other instances in the common draft era starting in 1967 when a team traded up for a top two pick and drafted a non-quarterback
Pace was one of four Hall of Famers acquired that way with the other three all being running backs: Eric Dickerson (1983)
Earl Campbell (1978) and Tony Dorsett (1977)
Some of the other trades weren't as successful like Cincinnati moving up to take running back Ki-Jana Carter first in 1995
the Jets trading up for receiver Lam Jones in 1980 and the Vikings moving up for running back Clint Jones in 1967
Ohio State defensive tackle Tyleik Williams

With the SEC setting a record with 79 players drafted and Ohio State having 14 of the 71 draft picks in the Big Ten
the two most prominent college football conferences dominated draft weekend
Thanks to the first year of expansion that sent Texas and Oklahoma to the SEC
those conferences accounted for 58% of all draft picks
Thrown in the 42 picks for the ACC and 31 for the Big 12 and the four power conferences had nearly 87% of all draft picks this year
The Group of Five had just 18 players drafted
as many players who began their careers at that level have moved up to power conferences
There were only eight players chosen from non-FBS teams
There were players who finished their college careers at 86 schools that got drafted with the defending champion Buckeyes leading the way with 14 — one off of the record since the start of the seven-round draft era in 1994 set by Georgia in 2022
Five schools had seven players drafted: Alabama
This marked the 87th straight draft with a player from Michigan being taken
USC also has had a player taken in every draft since 1939
tying the Wolverines for the longest active streak
speaks during an NFL football press conference
There was an even split of offensive and defensive players picked in the draft with 126 players from each side of the ball picked — not including the two-way player Hunter
The other four players taken were specialists
including a rare long snapper drafted with Julian Ashby getting taken by New England with the 252nd pick
The defensive line led the way with 58 players taken
followed by 47 exclusive defensive backs and 41 offensive linemen
There were 30 receivers drafted in addition to Hunter
This marked just the fourth time in the common draft era that two tight ends were taken in they top 15 with Chicago taking Colston Loveland 10th and Indianapolis choosing Tyler Warren 14th
It also happened in 1992 (Derek Brown and Johnny Mitchell)
1973 (Charlie Young and Paul Seymour) and 1972 (Riley Odoms and Jerome Barkum)

Inside the Numbers dives into NFL statistics
— Many Wisconsinites and those across the state line in Illinois are enjoying spring break in Wisconsin.
Abbi and Beka Welsh spent a couple of days in Lake Geneva over their spring break.
“We grabbed some dinner,” said Kelly Welsh
“Walked around a little bit and did some shopping.”
it was a getaway just a couple of hours away from home
It’s a little bit different,” said Kelly Welsh
I live in the city and it’s nice to come and have a slower pace of life.”
Jesse Kearns is the resort manager at Timber Ridge Lodge and Water Park at the Grand Geneva. Kearns said there’s an uptick in reservations over spring break. He also has noticed a good portion of guests haven’t traveled too far.
“I do find that a lot of people are actually from 15
30 minutes just right around here local,” said Kearns
sometimes I see kids that played sports around my kids and stuff
The spring months kick off the busy season for Lake Geneva. Visit Lake Geneva President and CEO Stephanie Klett said March and April can vary each year because the weather can be unpredictable.
“The numbers typically go down a little bit but with spring break and really the advent of four seasons and lots of indoor things to do
we are seeing those increases every year now in what was once a really down time,” said Klett.
Klett has noticed that as tourism numbers increase
“More travelers want the freedom of a car because when you go to a destination you’re flying to
renting a car can cost a fortune on your length of stay,” said Klett
stuff like that and not be in our hometown for the day,” said Kelly Welsh.
Metrics details
The quagga mussel (Dreissena rostriformis bugensis) is an invasive alien species present in many aquatic ecosystems
Although this species is known for its ecological and economic impacts
there are still significant gaps in our knowledge of its ecophysiology
This is particularly true when its growth rate under natural conditions is considered
we assessed bivalve growth in Lake Geneva during different seasons and for a variety of habitats
Based on the recorded changes in maximum shell length analysed during the period of this study (winter and spring 2023–2024)
we measured average growth rates ranging from 0.142 ± 0.099 mm day−1 for individuals smaller than 10 mm to 0.089 ± 0.071 mm day−1 for larger individuals
The size class-dependent growth rate was analysed on the basis of the time of year
primarily depends on size and is independent of temperature or habitat within the studied range
This growth capacity in Lake Geneva is the highest found to date and is likely to explain the invasion success of this species
which gives it a very rapid and aggressive colonization capacity
in situ measurements without manipulation of the animals and without the use of artificial substrates (i.e.
its application to the construction of structure-from-motion (SfM) models for freshwater mussel aggregates is the first
we were able to measure the growth rates of numerous individuals who are representative of a variety of lake conditions
Our results suggest that the quagga mussel can grow more rapidly than previously reported
reaching up to 0.142 ± 0.099 mm day−1 for small individuals during the study period (winter and spring)
and this growth capacity is proposed as a key factor explaining the success of animal colonization in European lakes
Averaged growth rates as a function of size compared between winter and spring
The values correspond to the number of growth rate calculations performed for each size class
When all the measurements were plotted, the decrease in growth with increasing shell size was also clear (Fig. 2).
Relationship between the growth rate and the initial size of measured individuals
Mean growth rates in winter and spring
Values for winter and spring correspond to the minimal and maximal temperature recorded during each period
We did not observe neither a “group” effect on growth
the size of the aggregates and thus the number (and size) of individuals per aggregate had no significant effect on growth
such as resource availability and/or environmental conditions
play a more crucial role in animal growth (see Discussion)
Relationships between photogrammetric and calliper measurements
the impact of dreissenid mussels is dependent on the biomass they represent
as this biomass is itself dependent on the number of individuals and the size structure of a population
The growth of the biomass represented by populations and the growth-at-length of individuals in Lake Geneva remain unexplored to date
but they focused on the Rhine-Meuse River estuary in the Netherlands and individuals measured on plates deployed 1 m below the water surface
for which they reported average growth values of 0.09 mm day−1 or of 1.5–2.5 cm year−1
likely at a moment when no limiting conditions occurred to prevent the quagga mussel from developing
We assume that the situation of Lake Geneva may be comparable and that
as a significant increase in biomass continues in the following years
quagga mussels will have to compete increasingly more for resources
resulting in probable decreasing growth rates in the future
The growth rates of quagga mussels in Lake Geneva
which were calculated via a very original method
Such growth capacities could constitute an important ecophysiological process that enabled the animal to settle and colonize this lake and others in Europe so rapidly
Among the reasons for quagga mussel success in European lakes
the growth rates of the animals are likely important throughout the year
All photographed Dreissenids were assumed to be quagga mussels
as a previous study indicated that zebra mussels accounted for no more than 2% of the Dreissenids and were present in only one quarter of the samples (data not shown)
Note also that our analysis was only performed on visually verified live individuals along the study and in aggregates easily identifiable (without ambiguity to relocate them from one sampling date to the next)
each comprising a few dozens of individuals
Submersible loggers measuring dissolved oxygen concentrations and temperature (miniDOT
California) were deployed during this study and programmed to obtain one measurement every 15 min
The effect of temperature on animal growth was tested after considering the mean temperature between the two dates considered for each growth rate calculation
Flowchart of the photogrammetric approach (A) and (B) series of images showing the passage from a typical initial photography of an aggerate to its model reconstruction to size individual evolution between dates
Briefly you must (i) perform photo alignment using a low setting to preliminarily sort photos as disposable or not
followed by a high setting in Agisoft Metashape; (ii) generate a Structure-from-Motion (SfM) model with high-quality settings
using a key point limit of 40,000 and a tie point limit of 4,000 in Agisoft Metashape: (iii) scale and clean the model using Meshlab ; (iv) perform measurements and analysis using CloudCompare
The demonstration that the applied method is adequate to measure the growth of mussel individuals between the recording dates is provided in the supplementary information (Fig
growth measurements were performed using CloudCompare software (v2.13.0 Kharkiv - Feb 14 2024 [64-bit]) with the aid of a custom-designed 3-D graduated scale
specifically developed for this study and used during each underwater photo session (Fig
Scatterplots were aligned to compare data across different dates to assess quagga mussel growth
We measured the maximum length of individuals and compared these measurements over time
Growth rates were estimated by calculating the difference between shell length measurements on different dates
To facilitate comprehension and comparison with the literature
the results are presented as daily mean values across four size classes: 0–10 mm
Width measurements were also taken on some individuals to assess growth as a function of size and to determine whether growth was proportional to size
The assembly index was calculated as a function of the height of the colony and the potential interaction between 0 individuals and some individuals without interaction and 5 individuals forming an aggregate with individuals growing on other individuals
it was very difficult to track many individuals at any one time
and in total less than 5% (20/404) of our individuals were able to provide us with more than one growth measurement
We therefore considered our data to be independent
we normalized our data for monthly and seasonal growth
A growth model was created via linear regression
and mean comparison tests were conducted to evaluate the effects of different individual sizes
We used the packages ade4 and AICcmodavg to determine our linear model
Linear models were generated with the base function present in R (4.2.1)
The mean comparison test used was the Krustal test
to determine the difference between the classical method and our method
we perform a linear regression between these two measures
we calculate the mean monthly growth for each class size
and we compare this with some Krustal tests
we studied the length and width growth with a Krustal test and linear regression

Big Foot’s Carter Ries hit a walk-off RBI single in their come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Brodhead/Juda Thursday
going 3-for-4 with three RBIs in their 9-6 win over Mukwonago Friday
Billingsley has been a scoring machine for the Lady Badger soccer team this season and that was no different Tuesday
It was an incredible performance all-around by the Badgers
with seven different goal scorers and nine total goals in their 9-0 shutout victory
but Billingsley led the team with three goals (hat trick) and one assist
And these three goals and one assist by Billingsley was an encore performance following a four-goal game back on Saturday
has not only been one of the best softball players in the county the past few seasons
but she’s also been one of the best softball players in the state of Wisconsin her previous three years
So far during her senior season in just 14 games played
she’s been nothing short of exceptional at the plate
While Big Foot may have suffered a 4-3 loss to Evansville on Tuesday
What a week for the Big Foot baseball team
After initially falling to Brodhead/Juda in a 7-6 nailbiter on Tuesday
the Chiefs went 2-0 the rest of the week with a 3-2 victory over Brodhead/Juda and 13-4 victory on the road against Stoughton
Brodhead/Juda held a 2-0 lead all the way until the seventh inning before the Chiefs tied it up to force extra innings
Ries hit a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to seal the walk-off win and come from behind victory
He went 1-for-3 in the game with the game-winner and went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the matchup on Friday against Stoughton
he went 4-for-8 at the plate with three RBIs
a junior and not full-time player at the beginning of the year for the Badgers
has certainly made his presence known as of the late and that was clear this past week at the plate
On Thursday in their 7-0 win over Waterford
but he saved the best for last in the non-conference game against Mukwonago on Friday
The Badgers came away with a 9-6 victory and combined for 14 hits
mostly timely hits in the game came from Albanese
the junior second baseman and ninth batter in the lineup
but the timing of them couldn’t have been better
take the lead and lead off what was the first four-run inning
Later in the game in the fifth inning all tied up at 5-5
Albanese was at the plate once again with runners on base and did his job by pulling a two-run double out to left field to put the Badgers back on top
Albanese finished with a ridiculous .714 batting average this week
going 5-for-7 with five RBIs in just two games played
but high school athletics are still in full swing with plenty of student-athletes con…

LAKE GENEVA — It's the 50th anniversary of one of the most iconic games in the world
and it all started in a small Lake Geneva home
was published 50 years ago by Gary Gygax from his Walworth County home
The game was created at 330 Center Street in Lake Geneva with the help of Gygax's co-creator Dave Arneson
the game has been played by millions across the world and inspired books
It was even part of the 'Satanic Panic' in the 1980s
People falsely believed Dungeons & Dragons was a guise for satanic worship and was being used as a cult recruitment tool
Words and phrases have transitioned from only being used while playing the game to common speech
"People talk about leveling up, they talk about critical hits, and, you know, I made my save and death save, and there's a whole bunch of things about characters and non-player characters (NPCs) that are in the lingo of humanity, but they all started with this game, Dungeons & Dragons," Paul Stormberg, the president of the Gygax Memorial Fund said
The Gygax Memorial Fund's goal is to commemorate the life and contributions of Gary Gygax
The organization wants to build a statue of Gygax and a table where people can play D&D
Stormberg has been playing D&D since the 1980s
Dungeons & Dragons was one of the first-ever role-playing games that inspired countless spin-offs and revolutionized the fantasy and gaming industries
It offered people a new genre of game to play
it's actually becoming part of the fabric of humanity
but that's like saying chess is just a game."
28 years before publishing Dungeons & Dragons
He moved into the home on 330 Center Street in 1966
The first-ever game was played in a small office
Dungeons & Dragons 50th Anniversary: How Lake Geneva changed the fantasy world..
the first game was not played in the famous War Games room
the War Games room does have the DNA of D&D
the company brought hundreds of people to Lake Geneva to work
The house at 330 Center Street has since been turned into a museum called 'The Birthplace of DnD'
People travel across the world to play there
You can stay in the neighboring house and play games at the museum
"(It's) a pilgrimage to be able to say I spent some time in the home
or I was able to play at the table," Yolanda Frontany
She didn’t know the home was a famous house when she bought it 20 years ago
But she has since embraced its significance
"We’re doing tours and having gaming sessions at the table."
and renowned Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello
Along with the home, there’s an exhibit at the Geneva Lake Museum chronicling Gygax’s life
While it does detail the history of the game
it is more focused on the man behind the game
that personal connection from the museum to the community," Sonja Akright
the director of administration with the Geneva Lake Museum
There is also a Lake Geneva Convention dedicated to Gygax called Gary Con
there is a Renaissance Faire-esque festival called Dragon Days in Lake Geneva that also pays homage to the Dungeons & Dragons creator
It has become the world’s largest tabletop game convention
It attracts hundreds of thousands of people every year
Dungeons & Dragons has grown from a small idea to a global phenomenon
And it all started in a small lake town that at the time had just about 5,000 people
