Lake Jackson in north Tallahassee is experiencing a dry down event
during which part of the lake naturally and cyclically drains into a sinkhole
which is located near Faulk Landing, has drained fully 11 times since June 2021
the sinkhole area is inundated after recent heavy rains
The episodic dry down has attracted many visitors who are curious to see this natural phenomenon
If you are planning to visit Lake Jackson, please take precautions and stay safe. DEP has created an FAQ about the dry down. Faulk Landing has been a bird-watching hot-spot, particularly during the dry down. Naturalists can stay up to date on flora and fauna observations on eBird and iNaturalist
Lake Jackson is internationally known for its unique hydrology and trophy largemouth bass and as an outstanding habitat for wading birds
waterfowl and a diversity of other wetland species
The lake is located within the northern boundaries of the Tallahassee Hills physiographic region
This region covers a 25-mile-wide strip of upland formations spanning five counties in Northwest Florida from the Withlacoochee River to the Apalachicola River
The topography surrounding the lake has an elevation of 200 to 230 feet above sea level
the steep hills form the sub-basins that give Lake Jackson its shape
Lake Jackson is a shallow-water body that has an average depth of 6 feet except for two major sinkholes - Porter Hole Sink and Lime Sink - that have a localized depth of about 28 feet
The lake was formed through the dissolution of limestone over time causing the collapse of the overlaying sediment and forming the lake basin
long-term drought and a lack of heavy rainfall events can create conditions that contribute to low lake levels and slow draining.
Porter Hole Sink has famously disappeared and refilled dozens of times in recorded history
lake levels have been trending downward over the last few years due in part to long-term regional drought conditions and lack of heavy
localized precipitation events within the lake’s basin that are needed to sustain lake levels
it can appear as if the lake dries within hours or days
Although the sinkholes are likely draining constantly
they can be partially or completely plugged with sediments and organic matter
Lake Jackson maintains water levels only through direct and indirect precipitation (runoff) within its 42 square-mile basin
Future conditions may change rapidly at the sinkhole and across the lake depending on the frequency of heavy
“Full pool” water level conditions are considered at approximately 86 feet above sea level (referenced to NAVD88)
The lake is best explored by paddlecraft and boats or a spotting scope from one of the many landings
mud motors and air boats are all used
There are nine boat landings that provide access to the aquatic preserve
Kiosks at each access point provide information and maps.
Nearby, Lake Jackson Mounds Archaeological State Park and several county parks offer hiking trails and boardwalks for viewing wildlife and enjoying the scenery. Popular activities on the lake including fishing
Lake Jackson is also a Designated Florida Paddling Trail as part of DEP’s Office of Greenways and Trails.
Lake Jackson has served as an important natural resource to communities long before its designation as an aquatic preserve in 1973. The Fort Walton Culture of 1200 to 1500 A.D. thrived in the early environmental setting of the aquatic preserve and surrounding areas. The remains of their ritualistic culture can be found at Lake Jackson Archaeological Mounds State Park
The Southeastern Ceremonial Complex located in the park is evidence of an advanced community structure that existed around 1200 A.D
The earthen mounds have been preserved to offer visitors the opportunity to look back through time into the area's rich cultural history
Clastic upland lakes are generally characterized as shallow to relatively deep
irregular-shaped depressions or basins occurring in uplands
They have surface inflows but are often without significant outflows
Water is generally dissipated through evaporation and transpiration
but it may also disappear through sinks that connect with the aquifer
The karst topography of North Florida produces numerous sinkholes from the dissolution of the underlying limestone
Lake Jackson has small to medium sinkholes scattered across the bottom
The lake's natural dry down and refill cycles are determined by the activity of these sinks and the amount of rainfall in the area
The sinkholes are important to the lake's ecosystem because natural periodic draining creates a cleansing effect for the lake
reducing invasive aquatic vegetation and exposing organic sediments that eventually decompose
Wet prairies are communities of non-woody vegetation found on continuously wet but not inundated soils on flat gentle slopes
They are dominated by a mixture of grasses and sedges in the wetter portions
Wet prairies in North Florida are some of the most diverse communities in the U.S. with an average of more than 20 species per square meter
These communities are very sensitive to alterations to the soil surface that can alter the hydrology
Wet prairies are prevalent in the northern section of Lake Jackson near the "cattle gap."
The fluctuating water levels within the aquatic preserve prevent the domination of any one invasive species but also create enough disturbance for some infestations to thrive
Management is achieved by working closely with FWC’s Invasive Plant Management Section to mitigate their populations in both aquatic and riparian zones
Hydrilla is managed by herbicide treatment and sterile grass carp stocking
Natural dry down events also knock back hydrilla populations in shallow areas
but infestations usually remain in the lake's deeper sections
Waterfowl also use hydrilla as a food source in winter
Other aquatic exotics are treated with appropriate types and amounts of herbicide
Chinese tallowtree infests lake buffer - or riparian - areas and is resilient to varying water levels once established
Intensive management of this exotic tree was initiated in 2020-21
targeting dense stands of mature trees with selective herbicide application
Long-term goals include replacing tallowtree areas with native tree canopy for increased nesting and foraging habitat for wading bird species
The exotic island apple snail - originally from South America and a favorite food of the limpkin - is present in the lake and its population varies with lake levels
The snail’s impact on the native communities is currently unknown
Future monitoring and research projects are being considered to learn more about the snail’s population status in the aquatic preserve and potential management options
Lake Jackson Aquatic Preserve staff coordinate all management and outreach with help from partners
Northwest Florida Water Management District
Aquatic preserve programming includes a seminar series and lake cleanups
landowner initiatives (such as the Adopt-A-Buffer Program
and providing lake-conservation information on kiosks
The public can participate in a citizen science monitoring project by submitting photos at two Chronolog stations featured on the lake at Jackson View and Sunset landings

The steel cabinet smoker at Brian’s Bar-B-Q in Clute
Brian Devine helped build it and installed it with his wife
producing all the meat for both Brian’s and the Fill Station
After finding a seat at Brian’s Bar-B-Q
A framed article announcing its opening explained the provenance of the various decorations
had gone back home to collect items for display
“I can’t live in the country anymore,” he told the Brazosport Facts newspaper
“so I brought a little of the country to the restaurant.”
The prices at Brian’s are a blast from the past
The True Texan plate gets you two sides and a pound of smoked meats
I opted for a scoop of mustard-tinted potato salad and classic pinto beans with the brisket and turkey on my plate
I’d go for the savory pork ribs and smoked sausage next time
That old-school barbecue environment is what the Devine boys grew up in
“Our first job for both of us was pouring cups of tea at caterings,” Kyle told me
He was a dishwasher at fourteen and cleaned the smokers on the weekends
but neither he nor Kent saw their future at the family business
“He did everything he could to talk us out of going into the restaurant industry,” Kyle said
Kent went to San Marcos to attend Texas State University
and Kyle left town for New York a month after graduating high school
“Let me get as far away as I possibly can,” he remembered thinking at the time
Kyle started working in restaurants and bars in Brooklyn
He got a scholarship to attend law school at St
“I walked out in the middle of orientation and went back to work in New York,” Kyle said
He took a position at Brooklyn Wine Exchange and helped build its spirits program
It was an education in whiskey that transformed him
The photos he saw from every family event he missed weighed on him
so he decided to come back home for an extended visit
“My motivation for moving back was to learn barbecue and bring it back to New York,” Kyle said
but leaving behind the hectic pace of New York felt good
Brian and MaryAnne were ready to retire and had plans to sell the restaurant
The boys had ideas on how to expand and maybe give their folks the comfortable retirement they deserved
they found a gas station from 1947 that was being used for storage
were able to buy Brian’s and allow their parents to retire
Kyle’s spirits expertise is on full display at the Fill Station
bottles line the wall from floor to ceiling
In addition to the full barbecue offerings
there’s an extensive cocktail menu that changes quarterly
“I don’t know if I prioritize one over the other,” Kyle said
but when he had to choose a category for the restaurant on Google
They started with a small smoker in the back but soon realized it made more sense to cook everything in the pits at Brian’s
“On the food side and the beverages side
it’s been an outlet for creativity,” Kyle said
which is why the Fill Station serves barbecue tacos on Tuesdays
the large beef short rib is a heck of a value
but gets another layer of coarse black pepper before smoking
the Devine family has always smoked with live oak wood
which brings a bolder smoke flavor to that beef rib
The bartenders at the Fill Station can help you build a whiskey flight from any of the bottles on the shelf
Kyle estimates that five hundred of the eight hundred bottles are whiskey
a selection that rivals most whiskey bars in Houston
The drinks are a heck of a lot less expensive in Lake Jackson
and Penelope Rosé Cask Bourbon (one-ounce pours of each) was just $28
and Kyle chooses one whiskey each week for half-price pours
The Fill Station’s popularity isn’t going to change how the elder barbecue joint in the family does business
“Brian’s has served the community for thirty years
and I don’t want to change it,” Kyle said
He is happy with how his return home has changed his life for the better
he came by to say hello with his young son in his arms
He came back to southern Brazoria County to keep the family business alive and to grow a family of his own
“This pace is enjoyable,” he said
“I get to enjoy life a little more.”

cats and dogs have been subject to different standards in the eyes of the law
“Cats and dogs are now equal under our ordinance,” City Attorney Sherri Russell said told City Council while presenting the proposed change to the animal control law
damage your property or attack and kill other animals.”
leaving the possibility for new owners to take over the space
"The Lord was telling us it was time to retire," said Lisa Taylor
wife and business partner of owner Johnny Taylor
in an interview with the Tallahassee Democrat
The couple spent one recent morning completing their regular maintenance
preparing to put their nearly two acres of property up for sale
but a final "hoorah" will commence once a new buyer is secured
four different groups have looked into taking over the property
"Selling the business name is negotiable," Lisa added
Johnny helped operate his parent's steak and seafood restaurant
The popular restaurant operated from 1946 to 1986 on West Tennessee Street
Johnny opened his seafood eatery in a single unit in a strip mall on Crowder Road in 1985
he purchased property on Lake Jackson's Sunset Landing where Shucker's is operated by the couple now
"We were blessed with the overwhelming love and support from friends to help make the move
We could not have done it without them," Lisa said
Johnny shared his visions of what he wanted to make the new location shine with his best friend Jerry Garner
you have the vision and we can make it happen!' "
the restaurant and bar was a place of refuge for those looking to escape reality
and that simplicity is what everyone favored about it
especially its capability to evoke a sense of Florida nostalgia
People exchanged stories on the restaurant's porch about fishing that day on Lake Jackson
canoeing out on the waters and watching for baby alligators and ducks that found their way onto the dock
Its menu consisted of oysters by the dozen and homemade "Shucker's Favorites" from Gulf shrimp to blue crab claws
seafood gumbo and other handheld fare and seafood delicacies
motorcycle runs and their annual 'Chili Cook Offs' for Big Bend Hospice
"We still have some of the same customers today as we did 40 years ago," Lisa said
then Johnny's own health emergency shortly after
the couple took this as a sign to calm the waters
They ultimately came to a hard decision to look ahead to the next chapter
"We've just had so many special memories," Lisa said
adding that friends left kind remarks on social media saying they will be greatly missed
but it's time to enjoy life and our family."
Their hope is that the next tenant will be blessed with "as many great years as we have."
Lisa said patrons have reached out stating their own hopes that the future tenant will "be just like us," maintaining a space "where they can enjoy coming out and sitting on the lake
Many are grappling with the possible loss of this landmark establishment
most recently a reporter for the Associated Press in Tallahassee
who took his wife Amy there for a couple dozen of raw oysters on their first date 13 years ago
He said it wasn't your typical "glitz and glam" attraction of a restaurant you would visit to impress your lady
but it was a place where they bonded over their love of oysters
It always reminds us of that first night," he said
and it's just such an important part of our romance
It was this first date when he learned that she preferred raw oysters without the cocktail sauce
"It's got a big place in both of our hearts," he said
