Los Angeles boat and hikePlus a few other smaller local spots where you can splash around or rent a boat we’ve also included a couple of other less impressive places closer to home that A couple of quick notes before you hit the road: Some of these lakes may not actually have enough water to boat or swim during drought years so make sure to check the status of each spot before you go check to make sure there aren’t any active bacterial or algae blooms Photograph: Shutterstock2hrs 30mins from L.A this evergreen-lined reservoir in the San Bernardino Mountains and its busy town should satisfy pretty much all of your recreational needs The boating and fishing opportunities are plentiful in the summer with spots to wade along the extensive shores sheltered cove by Meadow Park is the family-friendly beach you’re looking for but the distance (and often traffic) and sheer number of rentable cabins makes this better suited for a weekend trip Find more to do in our guide to Big Bear Photograph: Esteban Gomez-Beltran / Shutterstock.com1hr 45mins from L.A Though considerably smaller than Lake Arrowhead, this neighboring reservoir to the west is considerably more public: You can fish and kayak on the lake, hike or walk your dog around the perimeter and even splash around in a water park on the shore Photograph: Shutterstock1hr 30mins from L.A The farthest west of the San Bernardino Mountains reservoirs, Silverwood Lake isn’t nearly as forested as its eastern neighbors But its hilly perimeter is lined with trails a marina and a pair of sandy beaches on the southeast shore make sure to stop at the scenic vista on the 138 by Chamise Cove Just north of Santa Clarita (and only minutes off of the 5), Castaic Lake is one of the largest and closest reservoirs to L.A. It’s easily one of the most action-packed ones while the western side of the smaller Photograph: Shutterstock1hr 15mins from L.A Just up the 5 from Castaic, Pyramid Lake offers similar scenery with a slightly narrower recreational focus Most marine activity comes in and out of Emigrant Landing toward the northwest corner of the reservoir but if you’re looking to swim or paddle out in a kayak try the shores of Vaquero Beach to the south (the nearby Vista Del Lago Visitor Center is worth a quick stop for the view if you’re simply passing by on the freeway) Unlike the large mountain reservoirs above the bodies of water below are less likely to satisfy your lake-focused wanderlust. They’re not quite destination-worthy but if you’re deep in the Inland Empire or smack dab in the middle of L.A., you still might find them worth a stop Photograph: Courtesy CC/Flickr/miheco1hr 15mins from L.A Photograph: Courtesy CC/Flickr/cyclotourist1hr 30mins from L.A Though it’s one of the southermost reservoirs in California’s gargantuan water distribution network, Lake Perris still allows swimming (stick to the sandy beaches near the parking lots and campgrounds) the arid peaks to the southeast provide for a surprisingly scenic backdrop in an otherwise sort-of-flat Photograph: Courtesy CC/Flickr/mikeccross45 mins from L.A If you’re looking to splash around in San Dimas, you very well might end up at water park Raging Waters. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power said it plans to export 4,500 acre-feet of water from the Mono Basin during the current runoff year, the same amount that was diverted the previous year, and enough to supply about 18,000 households for a year. Under the current rules, the city could take much more — up to 16,000 acre-feet this year. But environmental advocates had recently urged Mayor Karen Bass not to increase water diversions to help preserve recent gains and begin to boost the long-depleted lake toward healthier levels. They praised the decision by city leaders as an important step. “It’s a historic decision in the history of Mono Lake,” said Mark Gold, director of water scarcity solutions for the Natural Resources Defense Council. “I think it’s the first major environmental accomplishment for water in the Bass administration.” Aggressive and impactful reporting on climate change DWP officials detailed their expected water diversions from the region of the Eastern Sierra in an annual plan for the runoff year, which began in April. Environmentalists said it’s the first time in 30 years that city officials have announced plans to take less water than the maximum amount allowed under a 1994 decision by the State Water Resources Control Board. However, DWP said in the plan that it will review water conditions in November, and at that point could still decide to export additional water if deemed necessary, up to the limit of 16,000 acre-feet. “Major kudos to the Bass administration for not taking all the water that they’re entitled to,” Gold said. “I think it’s the ultimate olive branch to the environmental community,” he said, and a “show of good faith on the part of the city.” Climate & Environment the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power has relied on long-standing water rights to divert from the streams that feed Mono Lake They also said doing this would complement efforts toward long-term solutions for Mono Lake “Mayor Bass has been clear that building a greener Los Angeles is one of her top priorities and protecting water resources certainly falls into that,” said Nancy Sutley Sutley said in an email that the mayor and DWP “are working together to implement new ways to protect the environment in sustainable and efficient ways.” The city has been diverting water from the Mono Basin since 1941 transporting it south through the Los Angeles Aqueduct For decades, the withdrawals of water from the area’s creeks led to dramatic declines in the lake. As the saline lake retreated, rock formations called tufa A 1994 ruling by the state water board called for raising the lake level to 6,392 feet — about 8 feet above the current level The lake’s level has risen about 5 feet since the start of 2023 when the historic snowpack in the Sierra Nevada sent large quantities of runoff streaming from the mountains The decision by city leaders this year will help preserve those gains executive director of the Mono Lake Committee “Mono Lake will be three vertical inches higher than it would have been if DWP were to take the full 16,000 acre-feet of allowed export,” McQuilkin wrote in a blog post. He said the step shows Bass’ “commitment to a sustainable relationship” between the city and Mono Lake, and a renewed commitment to achieve the lake level target mandated by the state water board 30 years ago. “And though it is just a fraction of the 8 feet separating Mono Lake today from its required healthy level, the inches quickly add up as the years go by,” McQuilkin said. The goal, he said, is to get Mono Lake back to a level that allows the ecosystem to thrive. County has captured enough stormwater to supply an estimated 2.4 million people for a year Officials say they plan to capture more runoff in the future Mono Lake provides habitat for imperiled shorebirds such as Wilson’s phalaropes, which stop at saline lakes during their long migrations, feeding on brine flies and other invertebrates The decision by city leaders “opens the door to have that conversation about how do we go forward in the years ahead and make sure we achieve the protection at Mono Lake that we’ve all agreed on implementing,” McQuilkin said executive director of Los Angeles Waterkeeper said the decision represents a big shift for the city and DWP I would like to see more of the same,” Reznik said “I’d like to see the city as they move forward do what they can to minimize what the take is from Mono Lake Reznik says California now has an opportunity to restore one of its ecological treasures while also lessening L.A.’s dependence on water imported from hundreds of miles away “We have to be more cognizant of local resilient water supplies that make us more water secure,” he said and see if we can build on it — on our move toward more local resilient water.” “The more we accept the mindset that we just can’t keep taking water from everywhere, and that we need to invest locally, the more I think we’re going to see all the benefits,” he said. California I am not a worrier, not given to hear the call of catastrophe. In the middle of the night on Monday, amid the squeal of the wind my husband got up to take down some chimes ringing through the dark I laughed: What a ridiculous time to have wind chimes a two-bedroom too small for a family of four We had been entranced by the view of Silver Lake Many institutions emailed to tell us that they were watching and waiting but remained open racing and laughing down the staircases cut into the ridge This was the “rainy-day protocol,” a protocol with which we were not familiar because it had simply never rained on a school day less justifiably ignorant of the same geography say I have never heard of the place where that fire allegedly burns “Are you tying things down?” a friend asked but we are not the kind of people who tie things down; we watch them fall A house you cannot really afford is one that doesn’t feel particularly yours waiting to be hung by people with the capacity to decide what color the walls ought to be while the children were kept inside at school Occasionally we heard a knock as an unidentified object hit the house a thin skein of white clouds and snowcapped mountains It was true that one could walk three minutes to the other side of the ridge and see smoke rise from the edge of the vista a skeletal presence standing sentry on our deck The wind was making a strange sound through the doors to our room “The door kazoo,” the 10-year-old called it My son began playing his electric piano; the power went out two minutes into “Für Elise.” Absent the hum of the air filters “and it’s your job to go to sleep.” “Yes,” she said ominously “and it’s Felix’s job to figure out how to finish his piano practice.” The glow behind the mountain grew stronger Things were falling off my neighbor’s roof “I don’t know roof words,” I told another writer — “pieces of roof.” “Chunks,” she said helpfully Chunks of my neighbor’s roof assembled next to the denuded umbrella but some instinct would not allow it; I crawled into bed with my daughter in the room she shares with her brother because her parents I awoke at 5 a.m.; the room smelled of smoke The 5-year-old opened the curtains to a kind of light I’d never before seen a valley bright but overhung with black clouds evincing a kind of groundedness lacking in every other member of her family “we should … get away from the bad things.” Our phones buzzed with an evacuation warning “Who would win in a rap battle,” the 10-year-old asked “Kendrick or Eminem?” We made the decision to leave not because of the warning but because of the power; without power and the sting of black smoke seemed dangerous for an asthmatic 5-year-old My husband thought Kendrick would win the rap battle The packing was easy in the beginning: passports baby books I had started too late and only fitfully completed It was the next level of packing that paralyzed I felt the same level of attachment to all of it we were not fleeing a fire that would relieve us of all our worldly possessions; we were merely leaving a power outage that had left one member of our family vulnerable to smoke She quietly put a cylindrical pool toy in my suitcase “I have my erasable marker!” said the 10-year-old A house belonging to his classmate was in the process of burning to the ground The county orders 180,000 people to leave as the flames jump highways and find new fuel. Man, I’m proud of you.” The emotional August exchange, on the eve of the Rams’ season, was another bonding moment for father and son. Sports Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold and Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield have revived NFL careers that were once in jeopardy played safety and cornerback for 12 NFL seasons 10 with the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1989 to 1998 a five-time Pro Bowl selection and was named to an NFL 1990s All-Decade team is a leader and something of an ironman for a Rams team that rebounded from a 1-4 start to make the playoffs “Football,” Quentin said of his relationship with his father Quentin’s lineage comes through in his approach, his maturity and his play, Rams coach Sean McVay said understanding of nuances and “emotional intelligence,” as McVay put it enables the 25-year-old to navigate situations and connect with other players Pittsburgh Steelers strong safety Carnell Lake warms up before the AFC championship game against the Colts in January 1996 (Mark Duncan / Associated Press) “You definitely feel that pedigree based on the love that he has and that relationship that he has with his father,” McVay said including a Super Bowl XXX defeat by the Dallas Cowboys in 1996 Quentin will start his second postseason game when the Rams play the Minnesota Vikings in an NFC wild-card game at State Farm Stadium in Glendale Because of safety concerns related to the wildfires in Southern California, the NFL moved the game from SoFi Stadium. “You want to remind guys that when stuff like this happens, it’s bigger than the game of football,” Quentin said of his role as a captain, “but at the same time we can use this game to give L.A. hope.” By design, Quentin’s journey to the NFL was made without a push from his father. Despite Quentin’s request for his father to coach him in youth sports — “I wanted to learn all the tricks of the trade,” he said — Carnell declined. “If you grow up enjoying it without feeling pressure,” Carnell said, “I think it’s going to be more about him.” Carnell never pushed football. He told his son that if he wanted to be an engineer, be an engineer. If he wanted to be a doctor, be a doctor. Rams Everything you need to know about the Rams facing the Vikings in the NFC wild-card playoffs at State Farm Stadium on Monday and you’re going to have to one day make a decision of what you want to do,” Quentin said he was such a good role model that that’s exactly what I wanted to do was be a football player and go to the NFL.” Quentin played at Santa Ana Mater Dei before following in his father’s footsteps to UCLA who had coached for seven seasons with the Steelers ‘I don’t want to miss that,’” Carnell said “He never wanted to overstep,” his son said But in 2018 after watching a Bruins practice where Quentin played a coverage incorrectly Carnell offered a bit of unsolicited advice you played a long time ago,’” Carnell said Not much changed after USC receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown burned the Bruins for a long touchdown late in the season Quentin Lake warms up before a game between UCLA and Fresno State at the Rose Bowl in September 2021 (Marcio Jose Sanchez / Associated Press) The next week I’ve got to listen — he knows what he’s talking about,” Quentin said we started really diving into the film and how can I improve my game — and my game took off.” The Rams selected Lake in the sixth round of the 2022 draft He was sidelined for much of his rookie season because of a knee injury but last season his versatility helped the Rams rebound from a 3-6 start to make the playoffs “We had that vision of being able to move him around and play wherever we needed to fit the defense,” Shula said so he is a guy that you can do a lot of different things with.” said he has benefited from the expertise of Rams coaches as well as his sessions with his father Carnell recalled one they shared during Quentin’s down time Rams safety Quentin Lake and cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon celebrate an interception against the Bengals in September 2023 (Emilee Chinn / Associated Press) “We stayed up till 2 in the morning watching film and he showed me his notebook,” Carnell said ‘You gotta be kidding me.’ He’s already ahead of me His penmanship and his notetaking skills are impressive His father had “multiple notebooks for one team,” when he was a player and now offers “full Power Point presentations” to his son He went into the final week of the season as one of only four NFL players to play every defensive snap The streak ended only because McVay rested or minimized snaps for starters in the season finale Lake’s success does not surprise defensive backs coach Aubrey Pleasant “He’s such a stickler for the details that sometimes I have to tell him to give himself some grace allow himself to be a little more kind to himself,” Pleasant said You want to be able to pull back on the reins as opposed to feeling like you’re always pushing them to move forward.” he also strives to lead by example in other areas Lake was on hand for the dedication of a football field the Rams installed at the Nickerson Gardens housing complex in Watts He also was among a number of Rams players that pitched in at a construction site in North Hollywood that will eventually be homes for military veterans “It’s being able to take a step back really from football and saying I’m a human first how can I help other people,” he said after mixing and moving wheelbarrows full of cement Rams rookie safety Jaylen McCollough attempts to follow Lake’s example. “You want to be an all-around pro, and that’s on the field and off the field,” McCollough said. “And so any nuggets you can take or just learn from Q, you just got to be a sponge.” That is how Quentin approaches the lessons his father passes along. In honor of Carnell, Quentin has always worn jersey No. 37, the number his father wore. “I thought about changing it when I got drafted,” Quentin said. “I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’m on my own journey.’ But you know what, 37 is just me.” Former Steelers coach Bill Cowher, a studio analyst for CBS, apparently recognizes the similarities between father and son. Fires made it impossible for the Rams to prepare for their wild-card playoff game against the Vikings in the Southland After Quentin and Rams defensive lineman Kobie Turner taped a television segment this season, Cowher sent Lake a video message, relaying a story about a sideline conversation he had with Hall of Fame safety Troy Polamalu. “Troy was having a tough time, and Troy came back to the sideline and coach Cowher was like, ‘Troy, you’re good. You’re good,’” Quentin said. “And Troy said, ‘I’m just trying to be like Carnell Lake.’ He wants to not only play in a Super Bowl but be a captain for a team that wins a ring. “I’d come home and be like, ‘Yeah, I’ve got this,’” Quentin said, shaking his ring finger. “That would be cool.” And another proud moment for father and son to share. Print Welcome to the L.A I’m culture critic and fervent bookworm Chris Vognar In “Creation Lake,” a 30-something government agent uses her wits and looks to infiltrate an anarchist collective in rural France Calling herself “Sadie,” she makes her inroads by seducing a rich Parisian filmmaker and slowly falls under the sway of the collective’s mentor He believes the time for revolution has passed and the only answer now is a return to primitive beginnings Sadie emerges as a sly take on the Ugly American confident in her abilities but comically insensitive to her surroundings (“To my palette Italian wine is more or less table wine which extol the virtues of the Neanderthal (or “Thals”) and perhaps even expands her frame of thought Kushner took time to discuss the book and Los Angeles culture from her book tour in London Rachel Kushner’s “Creation Lake” centers on a 30-something American government agent attempting to infiltrate a French anarchist collective (Chloe Aftel / Scribner) You grew up in San Francisco but you’ve lived in Los Angeles for 21 years How does the city fuel your work and your imagination There’s the amplitude of the county and the dynamism of life there and the economy and the diversity of people doing different kinds of things People who aren’t from there think Los Angeles is Hollywood which is a pretty confused way to think about the city People think that it doesn’t have street life I can leave my house and just wander out to see what people are doing on a warm Friday night And I love the geographical glamor of Los Angeles I think it’s the most beautiful city in the world when the citrus is coming ripe and the San Gabriel Mountains have snow on them I knew for many years that I wanted to write a novel set in a particular part of rural France among a group of young people from Paris who set up a commune and are set on a collision course with the French state And I pictured them having this mentor like I created in my book who has decided that capitalism is here to stay and no revolution is coming he proposes his own kind of homespun philosophy about revolutionizing consciousness But I hadn’t come up with an outside visitor until I realized that the narrator was a kind of devil the first two lines of the book came to me: “Neanderthals were prone to depression and especially smoking.” I knew that that was Bruno talking and that it was somebody else transposing his voice And pretty quickly I knew that she would sort of pull back and ridicule him or editorialize and then I could flip to the present action Then it just became about this duality between her and Bruno And I wanted to have very short chapters that would kind of spring load the reader from one scene to the next You studied political economy at UC Berkeley I had a few reasons why I didn’t study English and it was really easy for me to be a good student in economics and history and political science but to analyze a novel and have something interesting to say at 16 I didn’t have that level of emotional maturity I was interested in politics and just wanted to have some sense of the mechanics of the world (Please note: The Times may earn a commission through links to Bookshop.org whose fees support independent bookstores.) a crisp prose style and a mastery of counter-intuitive juxtapositions.” Lorraine Berry looks at two books that explore the intersection of race and policing: Ron Stallworth’s “The Gangs of Zion” and Jessica Pishko’s “The Highest Law in the Land.” As she writes “A stock character in American crime stories is the maverick cop the hero who bucks the system and bends the rules to bring in the bad guys Intrinsic to the macho stereotype is that his (or her) shield is backed up with physical violence or that his ever-present gun is his ultimate claim to authority.” And Scarlett Harris digs into Ashley Spencer’s “Disney High,” the story of the rise and fall of Disney Channel “The success of Disney Channel was kind of an accident,” she writes The general manager of Skylight Books in Los Feliz talks about what trends they’re seeing. (Robert Gauthier/Los Angeles Times) We caught up with Mary Williams, general manager of Skylight Books to find out what’s hot now and what’s coming up What’s been flying off the shelves this week We’re definitely in the throes of a great fall season for books Personally, I am looking forward to the new Haruki Murakami book that’s coming out in November, “The City and Its Uncertain Walls.” We’re going to do a midnight release party for that, so that should be a lot of fun. I’m also excited about the new Louise Erdrich novel, “The Mighty Red,” which comes out Oct. 1. That’s all for now. Keep on reading, and we’ll see you next time. they “render the unseen seen.” The otherwise invisible dirty hands of power and money are exposed in her fourth novel (Scribner) In “Creation Lake,” her narrator is not who she presents herself to be Unassuming Sadie Smith is squarely an antihero The sole autobiographical detail that Sadie ever offers is that she is from Priest Valley a place of no population that exists only as words on a sign on a barren California road What we do know that her contemporaries do not: She’s a malevolent secret agent paid by governments shadowy individuals or corporations to fold herself into activist communities with the intention to provoke behavior that disrupts their protests and political efforts high-risk job that demands you put your body and sanity on the line And it’s a career that comes with a shelf life: The possibility of death is greater than that of burnout Are readers following what could be her last assignment excavators designated for creating an industrial reservoir in the South of France were set on fire The likely suspects were a commune of subversives in the Guyenne Valley known as Le Moulin led by a charismatic and privileged young man named Pascal Balmy For the powers that be who wanted nothing to stand in the way of their development only someone on the inside could uncover their culpability and dissolve the group — by any means necessary the scourge of bureaucracy and cross-cultural conflict can be utterly entertaining in ‘The Ministry of Time.’ “Creation Lake” begins with sex and romance and leads to violence Europe is not filled with picturesque landscapes it’s “a borderless network of supply and transport.” In Paris Sadie orchestrates an innocent meet-cute with a pretentious hungry for her body and willing to accept her mysterious past which opens the door for her to make her move into the granular work of Le Moulin she finds herself adrift in what “felt like a place of aftermath.” Kushner creates a spellbinding story of intrigue and subterfuge that examines the limits of control and moral influence Her nimble pacing and enigmatic details track the games people play Kushner can’t help but introduce a philosophical and historical undercurrent that builds and absorbs the reader as Sadie slowly moves toward her final objective Sadie comes to see that it’s no coincidence that radicals titans of industry and government officials share a common Its influence tarnishes anything it touches as an explanation for things that are mysteriously aligned,” hides what is “instead a plot.” Beyond capital and control in a world of smoke and mirrors controlled by despots Humor mixes with a deep understanding of American foibles and the human heart to produce a riveting novel of ideas Someone else shares Sadie’s world-weary perspective a former revolutionary turned meditative recluse spends the bulk of his time living in a cave in an attempt to get closer to early man He also serves as a mentor or guru to Le Moulin To gain greater understanding of the forces at play in this commune Sadie monitors Bruno’s emails to the group “I left that milieu not to reject it but to find something else.” A veteran of the conflicts surrounding 1968 and their ricochet effects he searches beyond his personal tragedy and the forces of society to mine for a more profound motivation Bruno’s obsession with the evolution of human behavior and desires tethers him to the Neanderthals Did they die out because they lacked a ruthless drive to survive Was it a brooding fascination with art that marked their fate Lacking “mindful scholarship” of prehistoric art Bruno is left to speculate that while Neanderthals were “conjurers” and “artists,” Homo sapiens were “copiers” and “frauds.” Are modern men beasts driven by power and control who remarks: “To render the unseen seen: That is what an artist does.” When the battles have been fought and the world’s resources are depleted generational pain and malice rule the narrative with elements of the supernatural woven in A woman whose past has been scrubbed and abandoned as a prerequisite for her work she’s got a cynical and sophisticated grasp on her work The intimacy of these illicitly retrieved emails offers Sadie a lifeline to the history of humankind guided by a man as solitary as she is Bruno’s missives consider larger questions about the roots of our inner selves While the unruly commune has little patience for his broad philosophical strokes His questions throw off her balance and shift her focus She remains single-minded in the assignment to unsettle Le Moulin and topple a government deputy in the balance but she’s unraveling at the seams at the same time increasingly harrowing choices tethered to ruin our histories and any goals beyond successfully executing a project Kushner also stresses what we hope to gain from any measure of striving if we cannot face the painful truth of human intervention Sadie recalls Bruno’s reflection: “When we face our need to control it Lauren LeBlanc is a board member of the National Book Critics Circle. Books Print Less than six months after All Day Baby opened Then last year came the entertainment industry strikes along with unexpected costs that made business untenable Earlier this year chef-partner Jonathan Whitener died “I never meant to do any of this by myself,” owner Lien Ta said In a year marred by tragedy and continuing financial difficulties one of L.A.’s most creative neighborhood restaurants is closing the innovative dinette-leaning restaurant inspired by Southern cuisine does not make enough money on a day-to-day basis to sustain operations “We’re literally almost out of money,” she said “All Day Baby would again have been included on the upcoming 2024 edition of the L.A Times’ 101 Best Restaurants,” says restaurant critic Bill Addison “Its constant sense of reinvention was a survival tool but the efforts led to dishes that balanced comfort and creative spark The biscuit sandwiches and loco moco were part of my own weekend breakfast rituals On Saturday morning I saw customers in tears over the community’s imminent loss.” Less than six months after its debut, the pandemic hit, hampering Whitener and Ta’s plans for a morning-to-night model. Sidewalk bake sales and other incentives helped keep the business afloat until on-site dining could return. Then, as at many restaurants and bars in the region two entertainment industry strikes in 2023 slowed clientele to a trickle and unrelated interferences and costs — such as months-long street construction or LADWP bills that tripled last year — made the business untenable “I think our ambition and our egos really led us to a lot of optimism that we could do this,” Ta said “I guess you could say I am an optimist or I don’t give up I have wrestled with this daily and nightly Bill Addison reviews All Day Baby in Silver Lake There were days during the pandemic when All Day Baby made only a few hundred dollars a day; even in the following years there were still days it would net as little Ta said that she owed thousands of dollars of back rent to the building’s landlord which had accumulated through a negotiation of partial rent payment during the pandemic When the restaurant suffered multiple break-ins within 10 days in the spring Ta approached her landlord with the hope of discussing rent reduction to offset the cost of repairs but was reminded of the outstanding amount she realized she would have to sell the business After grappling with the decision for months she told staff in October in an announcement at the restaurant; she and some of her employees were crying by the end of it “I wanted to use what little savings or what grant money we received and to be as thoughtful with the cash flow that we did have to just keep finding solutions to mend what was a really difficult operation from the start There were lots of glimmers of hope that maybe we could see it to the other side.” All Day Baby hosted multiple pop-ups and pivots throughout its five years but Ta said the most successful by far was Tet-a-Tet a restaurant-within-a-restaurant that flipped to a Vietnamese-food concept in the evenings and ran for months what was a bustling service “went dark overnight,” and maintaining later business hours with additional staff no longer made financial sense; Tet-a-Tet ended July 1 A major emotional factor in the closure remains “I think in many ways All Day Baby in a different location could totally make it “I never meant to do any of this by myself.” In February, in a shock to the Los Angeles restaurant community and beyond, Whitener died at the age of 36. The acclaimed chef is described as a brother figure to Ta, who then lost a decades-long father figure months later and is still reckoning with the losses while trying to maintain both restaurants. “To do two at the same time and to feel like I want to do it well, it’s very confusing,” she said. “It’s hard to sort of push all of that down to just get through the day.” Food Jonathan Whitener, celebrated local chef of Here’s Looking at You and All Day Baby, has died at age 36. Since posting the announcement to Instagram Friday afternoon, hundreds of comments have poured in expressing sorrow, sharing memories and even tagging elected officials in case they could help change this fate. Over the weekend guests filed in ordering tables piled with food, sometimes multiple entrées per person. By noon, Robinson’s pastry case was decimated. Ta characterized the public response as “overwhelmingly lovely and heartbreaking.” But the owner does not want to focus on the heartbreaking aspects of the restaurant’s end, at least not for the next month. “In general, I love a celebration,” Ta said. “I think it’s important. And, you know, we’re not promised tomorrow, so I think we need to maximize and squeeze out all the juice of today as we can. I definitely do not want to make this about being sad.” All Day Baby is located at 3200 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles. Its final day of service is Dec. 15. But poppies are also fickle: If there’s too much rain, the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve can only expect a moderate poppy season Not a great bloom either (but you could still potentially see some other wildflowers) Photograph: Michael JulianoChino Hills may never achieve full-blown super bloom status, but the state park pretty much looks like the Shire after a wet winter (and heavy rain will often close the sopping wet trails for a couple of days) As of early April, rain has caused more wildflowers to pop up along the hillsides and trails, with “several species starting to show their colors,” according to California State Parks canterbury bells and arroyo lupine scattered throughout—and even some California poppies in patches around the park including near the Bane Canyon Kiosk.  Regardless of whether or not there’s a full-scale bloom on the way and just before it turns toward its terminus you’ll find a dirt parking lot where Bane Canyon Road turns into Telegraph Canyon Road Follow the signs for the Bane Ridge Trail and—in those years when they actually bloom—this is usually one of the easiest-to-reach spots for poppies You’ll need to pay to park ($10 for the day) though it’s free in the residential area near the entrance—but you’ll be tacking two to three hilly Photograph: Courtesy Douglas Croft/Bureau of Land ManagementThis sprawling grassland in southeastern San Luis Obispo County may stretch past what we’d typically consider Southern California but the three-hour trip is often well worth it after a wet winter Make no mistake: On most days you’ll find an arid dry lake bed at the center of this national monument which is bisected by the San Andreas Fault But if the conditions are just right—as they memorably were in 2017—you may spot a couple of weeks where the hillsides turn into rolling carpets of daisies you’ll find a small display of delicate-looking phacelia as well as goldfields along Soda Lake Road. Just a heads-up if you do visit the park: Some roads are wet and muddy and no towing services are readily available in the relatively remote area Photograph: ShutterstockTake a hike along the top of the iconic Malibu cliff and you’ll find bundles of giant coreopsis that turn from dusty green to lively yellow each winter and spring there were clusters of the yellow flowers visible on the hillside—though not blanketing it. They should stick around for quite a few weeks (last year’s bloom stretched throughout April) You’ll find a very limited number of parking spots on Cliffside Drive and zero parking in the surrounding neighborhoods But thankfully you can reach the flowery bluff via a lovely (and uphill but not punishingly so) hike from the sandy beach below Photograph: ShutterstockAfter a wet winter, you may find this iconic desert environment spotted with globemallow You also might even find a temporary lake: In 2024 some heavy February rainfall briefly filled Badwater Basin with water It’s also roughly in the same direction as South Lake Park in San Marcos a small hillside trail on the northern edge of San Diego County that was blanketed with lilacs last year But we don’t think either are really worth the multi-hour trek at this point Photograph: Michael Juliano for Time OutMarked by traffic nightmares brief closures and the crush of thousands of visitors Walker Canyon in Lake Elsinore was a super bloom sensation in 2019 The hillside trail was covered with eye-poppingly beautiful carpets of poppies and other colorful flowers—with Disneyland-sized lines of people snaking their way through them It caused such a nightmare for locals that the City of Lake Elsinore flat-out closed the area by the canyon to both cars and pedestrians in 2023 and 2024 in anticipation of a super bloom that never actually arrived So far this year looks like a bloom bust too, with nothing but barren hillsides so far. (The city formerly had a livestream of the trail but right now it literally just shows a dumpster.) If you’re simply looking for a floral backdrop in that general direction of SoCal, consider venturing another hour south along the freeway toward the Flower Fields in Carlsbad These perfectly manicured rows of planted flowers are a little less magical than hillsides blanketed in poppies but they’re still visually stunning—and way more predictable Photograph: ShutterstockWhen Walker Canyon closed in 2023, Diamond Valley Lake’s 1.3-mile seasonal wildflower trail quickly emerged as a fair substitute The typically dry terrain was turned a lush green and covered with patches of orange poppies Though the trail is now open for the season (Wed–Sun) you won’t really see any flowers at all yet—and the recreation area doesn’t expect there to be a big bloom In those years when there is a brilliant bloom You’ll want to arrive early with cash for the entrance fee ($4 per person) and prepare to wait in a line of cars Parking ($11) is available at the marina (2615 Angler Ave); from there follow the Lakeview Trail for about a half mile and you—and the crowd in front of you—will reach the wildflower loop it’s still a remarkable spot that’s worth a visit any time of year both of which LAist is part of Southern California Public Radio, a member-supported public media network. One of Los Angeles’ oldest green spaces, MacArthur Park, is on its way to being made whole again. The city tried to sell it off for a bottom-barrel price, but it failed to draw any interest. The land then went from swamp to dump as people piled trash and animal carcasses rotted away. But after Angelenos began to move to the Westlake neighborhood around it, they campaigned for improvements, and it transformed over the years. As L.A. grew through the decades, so did our transportation routes. There were proposals drawn up to achieve this through other means, like a $250,000 plan to build a bridge over the lake, but in the end, the city chose a cheaper option — simply extending the road, at $93,000 (equivalent to $2.1 million today). The cut-through change wasn’t welcomed by all, however. The Wilshire Community Council protested the move in 1932 and residents organized to urge city leaders to stop. In October of that year, 300 residents went before the Public Works Committee of the City Council to voice a unanimous dissent. But the city moved forward, and in 1934, they constructed the road that took Wilshire Boulevard into the park, through the lake, to the other side. The lake was drained temporarily as teams filled in the dirt foundation. At the time, the road it connected to was Orange Street, but it was all renamed to Wilshire later. The contentious history mirrors issues with the management of MacArthur Park today, with concerns that it isn’t well taken care of. Over the last several months, the water has inundated the construction site at the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and Melrose Avenue, providing a home for a new type of tenant —mosquitoes, ducks and other water-loving critters, residents say. It is unclear when the structural part of the project will begin. Jack Kurchian, a project manager for developer Charles Co., told The Times that the water began to stagnate after many of the 34 groundwater pumps installed on the property were vandalized. The pumps have since been repaired and the water level has been reduced, but the company is getting additional pumps to remove the rest of the water. “It’s been receding. We’ve probably pumped it down two or three feet already with the pumps that are there,” Kurchian said. “It’s just not happening fast enough.” West Hollywood city officials said the development is situated on a high water table where the ground soil is more saturated. The city’s code enforcement team gave the property owner a notice of violation June 24 and is working with the owner to ensure that the water is drained, according to a city news release. The city said Los Angeles County West Vector Control District inspectors have visited the construction site to monitor mosquito activity , but the agency could not be reached Friday to comment further. Kurchian said representatives told him they did not find active mosquitoes. Business Plans to build an office tower overlooking the Los Angeles River in the downtown Arts District have been canceled in the face of vast office vacancies Video recently taken at the site shows a pair of ducks swimming in the murky water The development has been in the works for at least a decade but has hit roadblocks including a lawsuit that questioned the adequacy of the city’s environmental review of the project Local advocacy groups, including the Los Angeles Conservancy, had called for developers to preserve the former building on the site, which housed the Jones Dog & Cat Hospital as part of the project. She tried to stay positive as she went on, saying, "The Palm trees 🌴 survived! I can’t believe it….And to hear the birds chirping warms my broken heart The Hairspray actress also thanked her friend Kirby Kotler, who appeared to be sharing updates with Lake about her property during the ordeal, writing, "You are an extraordinary human. Thank you for being there with us that terrifying night and thank you for getting this footage Kotler walked through Lake's front yard with a huge palm tree still standing in the middle A lot of her landscaping and some of her outdoor furniture remained showing a small portion that looked to be made of stone or brick still standing while the rest was almost completely destroyed with some of the basic structure still there.  Lake's latest update comes only days after she bid farewell to her "dream home," calling it her and husband Ross Burningham's "heaven on earth The place where we planned to grow old together." She also shared a video taken as they left home before the fire came through saying that she was "praying" for the neighborhood homes to survive.  "Grateful to have made it out alive and uninjured...No doubt had we stayed Lake went on to thank the firefighters and first responders Next: Ricki Lake Says Celebrity Medium Tyler Henry "Called It" That Her Home Would Burn Down in LA Fires the area's full-tilt transformation to gentrification is nearly complete (peep the Shake Shack Sweetgreen and even Habit Burger along Sunset Boulevard) but just as many locally owned independent restaurants are still thriving in Silver Lake so we rounded up the best of them—and man was it difficult to choose—for the neighborhood's best grub options.  Editor’s note: I’ve updated this guide to reflect the impending closure of All Day Baby and added new information on Ceviche Project and Seco (formerly known as Barr Seco) RECOMMENDED: See more in our neighborhood guide to Silver Lake Pijja Palace is a razor-sharp distillation of everything great about dining in Los Angeles: fun gloriously unfussy. The Indian-Italian restaurant-slash-sports-bar took the L.A food world by storm when it opened in 2022 (We recommend trying to snag a reservation or heading here closer to opening.)
