Melanie Walker says she's been visiting Lake Crabtree County Park for nearly three decades
"It's got beautiful trails which so many different people use," said Walker
"I generally walk along the lake or on the trails."
The days of walking on some of the trails are now numbered as Lake Crabtree County Park announced Thursday that the multiuse trails north of the park's main road will permanently close on June 1
I cannot believe that people have made this decision," said Walker
Raleigh-Durham International Airport provides land for Lake Crabtree County Park
and for years has leased the land to Wake County for $1 a year for public use
But that lease agreement is coming to an end
to the disappointment of Walker and others who use the trails
RDU has said the terms of the lease no longer comply with federal regulations
which require the airport authority to charge fair market value for the land
That fair market value would be prohibitively expensive to the county
According to documents RDU has shared publicly
the development will “create a unique and innovative entertainment destination which will appeal to the greater Triangle Region,” potentially including restaurants
RDU is reclaiming use of the portion of the park that runs along Interstate 40
According to a statement posted on Wake County's website about the closure
park staff will remove trail infrastructure ahead of the end of the county's lease agreement with the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority on June 30
allowing continued access to Black Creek Greenway
286 and the Town of Cary’s Reedy Creek Trailhead," said the statement
"Thank you to everyone who enjoyed and cared for these trails over the past three decades."
Sam Trogdon with Wake County parks says officials are working on a new lease agreement with the Airport Authority to keep other amenities
including the park's original 33-acre parcel
we'll do our best to maintain access to some of those other features around," said Trogdon
That's not calming frustrations among visitors and mountain bikers
"Why are we destroying this irreplaceable land when we've got entertainment and shopping malls everywhere
A spokesperson for RDU tells WRAL in a statement that no decision has been made on how or when the land will be developed

The Devils Lake Park Board held a regular meeting on Tuesday
Adam Nordenstrom spoke about the maintenance of the skate park at Roosevelt Park
He said he was looking at getting the surface area refurbished
which would help get the transitions between the ramps and ground back smooth again
He said the last time it was resurfaced was four to six years ago
“I’ve been skateboarding over 30 years… Sometimes
a lot of kids struggle with team sports due to social anxiety or even the cost to their family.” Nordenstrom said the only thing they would need the Park Board to help with is these surface area improvements
He said he’s already raised money to help with the repairs
There are some areas of the ramps that have settled down into the surface
which is creating a dip that could potentially cause injuries
Commissioner Jamie Beck said the park board’s philosophy is that if people are willing to help make improvements and raise money
the park board will support the improvement
He added that it has to be planned so it can be put in the budget
Nordenstrom was asked to meet with Superintendent Dennis Nysbit to put together a plan for the improvements and to see if it’s possible to get something done this year
The discussion of forbidding metal cleats during baseball games was brought up
Dennis Nysbit told the board that he reached out to other towns that have turf
and only Grand Forks is the only one that doesn’t allow metal cleats on their field
Dennis told the board that it seems like a lot of places will soon be phasing out metal cleats
The board felt it was too late for this year but could enforce it for next year
It was recommended that the board communicate with the teams to let them know it will be happening next year

Charles North's bench celebrates during a game against Lake Park on Wednesday
ST. CHARLES — St. Charles North coach Tom Poulin knew that his team could find another gear.
Despite the North Stars’ 11-4 record heading into Wednesday’s matchup against Lake Park, Poulin felt that while it was an impressive slate, the team had barely begun to scratch the surface of their potential as the season begins to shift into the second half of play.
But against a tough team and DuKane Conference opponent like the Lancers, North showed they had plenty more to give.
Led by senior Mack Patterson and sophomore Julianna Kouba, the North Stars put up three runs in the fifth inning and four runs in the sixth to help secure a 9-1 victory over the Lancers.
“This was just a glimpse of what we can do offensively,” North Stars coach Tom Poulin said. “You’re not going to do that to Lake Park very often. But we were able to control at-bats and square some balls up against one of the top teams of the state.”

Leading the charge in the game for North was Patterson, a Loyola-Chicago commit who went 4 for 4 in the game and drove in three runs.
“She is just so steady and such a student of the game,” Poulin said. “She’s going to be all over these at-bats the same way she would be if she went 0 for 4. She just keeps working and grinding it out and has a high softball IQ and will keep getting better from it.”
Patterson got the offense going for the North Stars (12-4, 4-2 DuKane Conference) early on in the contest, slapping an RBI double in her first at-bat to make give North the early advantage. Two batters later, she would make it 2-0 after scoring on a bunt single from junior Abby Zawadski.
“These past four years, I’ve been trying to be a leader,” Patterson said. “And now that I’m a senior, I feel like I’m finally able to just go out, contribute on my part, and then it gets the momentum going and everybody follows. And once that gets going, it helps everyone out.”
The senior would get the momentum going again in the fifth inning with an RBI single, and would continue it in the sixth, following a two-run double from senior Ivy Gleason with another run-scoring base hit.
“It was awesome to see all of our hard work just come alive,” Patterson said. “Everyone was helping each other out and picking each other up. And it just felt so nice to see everything start to fall in place.”

Kouba also finished the day with three RBIs for the North Stars. The sophomore had a two-run home run in the fifth inning and had a sacrifice fly in the sixth, marking her fifth consecutive game with multiple RBIs.
“Kouba is just on fire,” Poulin said. “She’s as good of a hitter as you’ll see, and we’re just going to let her keep hitting the ball the way she has been.”
The Lancers (12-4, 3-2) had some chances to get runs on the board over the final two innings, getting multiple runners on base in those innings, but couldn’t get the key hit to push more runs across.

“It’s always a dog fight when we play them, and I love playing against them,” Lancers coach Lynsey Gunnells said. “But the last couple of games, we’ve been struggling to get that key hit. We also missed getting some bunts down. So little things like that can make a big difference when you play a great team like St. Charles North.
Senior Ari O’Connell drove in the Lancers only run on the day with a solo home run to right field in the third inning. The Illinois-Chicago commit had three of the team’s six hits on the day, adding a double and a single.
“She’s having a great senior year for us,” Gunnells said. “She’s at eight home runs for us already and she’s a great leadoff hitter for us. She’s just really stepping up for us, and it’s good to see.”

SAN ANTONIO – Several recent incidents at Woodlawn Lake Park seem to cast a dark cloud over a place popular among San Antonians for Easter weekend camping
Woodlawn Lake Park is one of nearly a dozen city-owned spaces where a curfew on overnight camping will be lifted temporarily
cooking and gathering in the park for the Easter weekend has become a local tradition throughout the years
Woodlawn Lake has been the site of a shooting by San Antonio Park Police and the discovery of two bodies
San Antonio police say Chase Deckard-Thomas, 30, drove his car into the lake on Feb
then got out and approached an officer with a knife
The officer who responded to the crash ended up firing multiple shots at Deckard-Thomas
On March 25, a woman’s body was found floating in the lake.
Police determined she was homeless and had been swept away in a drainage ditch during a recent storm
police and firefighters responded to Woodlawn Lake for a possible water rescue
A police report says officers saw a nude man jump into the water from a drainage ditch
The man went underwater and did not re-surface
First responders found his body in the water at some point after that
But I just pray for them and go about my business,” said Norma Galdeano
“I think it’s a lot of the homeless population that need help
Galdeano says that despite what has been happening
she is continuing with her regular ritual of walking in the park
admits she is feeling a bit uneasy as she works out there
Perez said she was at Woodlawn Lake to witness several of the recent incidents
including the shooting by the police officer
Perez is not necessarily fearful about her own safety
as long as they pay attention to their surroundings
“I think if everybody’s vigilant and looking around,” Perez said
SAPD said Park Police will have an increased presence for the weekend at Woodlawn Lake and other parks where camping is permitted
They encourage anyone who notices anything unusual to call their non-emergency number
Perez and Galdeano predict that even with the recent trouble hanging over the area
people will still camp out and enjoy Woodlawn Lake for the weekend
there are signs that the tradition will continue
someone had already used caution tape to mark off a section between two trees
It’s the usual indication that the area has been reserved

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Saying she was "commanded to do so by the Lord," one of Elizabeth Smart's kidnappers violated her sex offender registry
was arrested on Thursday after police said she visited Liberty Park on April 9th
She also allegedly visited Sugar House Park
Liberty Park is a little more than three miles from her current address in Salt Lake City
with Sugar House Park more than seven miles away
Barzee was treated at Utah State Hospital for five years after her initial arrest during the Elizabeth Smart kidnapping case
Barzee had to enter a mental health treatment program
That ended in 2023 along with her parole conditions
although she remains on the sex offender registry for life
and is still subject to the conditions of that registry
and places where children and families gather
“She’s probably experiencing another mental health episode
or her mental health has deteriorated again or gotten worse since her release,” explained seasoned defense attorney Skye Lazaro
Now it is up to the prosecutor’s office to decide on possible charges or even to send her back behind bars
They may factor in her mental health issues when deciding what to do
"They may take that into consideration when they consider
or somehow reengage with her to get her stable again?'" Lazaro said
Barzee has since been released and must maintain an updated address and is still subject to the conditions of the sex offender registry

was actually feasting in the open grass right along the parking lot
After a few lovely hours of photographing the beautiful wildlife the park has to offer
I put my binoculars to my face and made note of the bird’s features
but I couldn’t find anything that matched the bird in front of me
After showing the bird to some local birders with more experience than me

2 seed Centennial/Spring Lake Park with a 3-2 win in the first state quarterfinal game of the Class AA Tournament
and Gianna Marchese was outstanding in goal as the Irish advanced to Friday’s state semifinals where they will play the winner of Andover and Hill-Murray
Hockey Finalist Sophie Stramel opened the scoring when she banged home a rebound off her own shot for her 29th goal of the season for a 1-0 lead
Holzer got her first on a power play at the 9:20 mark of the third period for a 2-0 lead with just over six minutes to play
But Centennial/SLP’s Grace Laager scored on a power play just over a minute later on a nice individual effort
finally solving Marchese who had been lights out all game by stifling several close chances by the Cougars
But Holzer answered again for the Irish when she skated down the left wing of the Cougar zone and fired a shot that deflected off a stick and found the back of the net for a 3-1 lead
The Cougars mounted more pressure by pulling their goalie
and Laager added a goal with 38 seconds left on a one-timer
but time ran short as Rosemount held off a late surge by the Cougars to win 3-2 and advance in the tourney
Rosemount’s Marchese stopped 22 shots to earn the win

the city of Reno started a tree removal and maintenance project at Virginia Lake Park
urban foresters will take down 19 Siberian elm trees
"Our chief interest is the safety of the public..
making sure that they're safe by removing any deadwood or rotten pieces of wood that could fall under the heavily used pedestrian path," said Matt Basile
"Some of the trees that do need to be removed unfortunately are in very poor condition and pruning just isn't an option at this time."
Basile said the elm trees crews are removing were likely planted in the early 1930s when they built the lake
as the trees have an average life expectancy of 100 years
"They're all kind of reaching the end of their usable lives in the landscape at this time," Basile said
Partial road and walking path closures around the lake will last from 7:30 a.m
Reno foresters have planned a special Arbor Day event at the park's playground to give the area a refresh
"We're planning to plant 25 new trees
and then we are working on some funding opportunities to repair some of the existing irrigation facilities around the lake
That would allow us to replant a lot of the trees that we have that we're losing at this time," said Basile
Basile said crews should have the project wrapped up by late June
but they're aiming to have it done sooner
Explorers can paddle and fish on the water or hike around it during a visit to Black Bass Lake

Lake Park man arrested for alleged drug deal with child
roommate arrested same dayby Sophie Pendrill
(CBS12) — A Lake Park man was arrested after he was spotted exchanging a suspicious white container while accompanied by a young child
the same day his roommate was busted for drug trafficking
The Palm Beach Gardens Police Department (PBGPD) said that on March 26
they launched a joint operation involving the Jupiter Police Department
and Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office targeting a home on Evergreen Drive for drug trafficking
The probable cause affidavit states that at approximately 6:04 p.m.
he exited the residence while allegedly appearing to conceal a white container in his pocket
continuing through various intersections before parking at a nearby Panera Bread restaurant on Northlake Boulevard
Surveillance agents noted that Mattys was accompanied by a young child
estimated to be between four and six years old
The driver then entered Mattys car and was seen conversing with him before leaving with a small white object
which agents noted resembled the container Mattys had earlier
The SUV eventually left the parking lot without stopping at a stop sign
prompting law enforcement to conduct a traffic stop
Agents made contact with the driver and a passenger
who admitted to having marijuana in the vehicle and produced a white container that matched the one seen during the earlier transaction
agents discovered a green leafy substance with white powdery residue
and it tested positive for both marijuana and fentanyl
Mattys has been accused of the sale of fentanyl

the city of Reno started a tree maintenance and removal project at Virginia Lake Park
their favorite marathon training spot is the path around Virginia Lake
“It’s just so accessible from so many different locations," said Ian Stoddard
I like to run here because the shade helps quite a bit," Meghan Stoddard said
But the couple couldn’t help but notice there were fewer trees than usual providing that sought-after shade
That’s because Reno foresters have been busy at work over the past week
crews will take out 19 Siberian elm trees and trim many others
“(We’re) making sure that they're safe by removing any deadwood or rotten pieces of wood that could fall under the heavily used pedestrian path (the trees are) all kind of reaching the end of their usable lives in the landscape at this time," said Matt Basile
Though crews were off the clock Sunday morning
But that hasn’t bothered local resident Leah Wzientek
I think the fact that this whole area is like a 15 mph speed limit
you’re almost already expecting to come through here kind of slow," Wzientek said
Wzientek was happy to hear reno foresters will plant 25 new trees to replace the old ones on Arbor Day
“Seeing the increase in green space is always good," Wzientek said
Reno crews expect to have the project wrapped up by June
Imagine a game of Musical Chairs in which contestants compete for four seats. Once the music stops, the scramble for a chair begins, ending with the seated winners and standing losers. The analogy fits the upcoming Lake Park municipal election
and the top four will go on to serve three-year terms
a community of about 9,000 residents squeezed between North Palm Beach and Riviera Beach
like many of its surrounding communities in this part of Palm Beach County
it faces the same problems of that come with growth and development — traffic congestion
and the demand for new residential and commercial projects that ultimately have the potential to change and reshape the very nature of the town
The Post recommends three incumbents who are hoping to either be re-elected or elected to a full term in office
knowledge and commitment to the job gives them the edge over three candidates who didn't accept The Palm Beach Post Editorial Board's invitation to interview — former Commissioner John Linden
former Mayor Michael O'Rourke and Commissioner Mary Beth Taylor
The Post won't recommend even seemingly experienced candidates if they don't show up to present their views

She's seeking re-election because she believes the commission and town administration are finally at the point where they can make progress after ending a time of bickerng at commission meetings and financial difficulties that almost put the town in bankruptcy
she would push to establish a plan for the U.S

She would be open to making Park Avenue more pedestrian-friendly
and would maintain ad valorem rates while prioritizing services to take advantage of new tax revenue to address town expenses
a 44 year-old middle school teacher and a former high school football coach
was appointed to the commission eight months ago when former Commissioner Linden stepped down from the dais
He is seeking his first full term as commissioner
and on March 11 voters should give it to him
Hensley has initiated a number of community events to draw more Lake Park residents into town government affairs
he would work to enhance public safety and infrastructure
He'd also work to complete ongoing projects
brings the experience of being an urban planner and former Riviera Beach planning and zoning administrator to her role as town commissioner
That on top of a 12-year stint as a volunteer member and board chair of Lake Park Planning and Zoning Board
along with her time on the dais as an elected official
If any candidate has the qualifications to help a community grapple with growth and development
Thomas would try to retain the town's small time charm by encouraging the growth of small businesses
particularly along the town's Park Avenue corridor
She would also work with young residents and help boost schools in Lake Park as well as work to improve community engagement with the Palm Beach Sheriff's Office and other county agencies
SAN ANTONIO - A woman who was found dead near a popular running trail has been identified

Seccombe Lake Park will close for a year starting March 3 as part of a $13.8 million renovation that will restore and modernize the 44-acre park
Funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and a $1 million grant from the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians
the project will include a full-scale transformation of the park
Planned improvements include lake restoration
The park will also receive new playground equipment with large shade sails
additional fishing stations around the lake
and the installation of palm tree solar lighting
“We’re going to get quite a bit out of our $13.8 million,” Public Information Officer Jeff Kraus said
“What has been our crown jewel of the park system will once again be in about a year
The year’s closure will be worth it when it’s completed.”
While acknowledging the inconvenience of the closure
Kraus emphasized that the renovations will be transformational
mirroring the extensive upgrades completed at Nickelson Park
“We are sorry to see this park go offline,” he said
the city has several upcoming projects at Gutierrez and Guadalupe Parks
San Bernardino continues to advance on the $244 million Second Street Bridge reconstruction near Mount Vernon Avenue
crews had begun paving the roadway spanning the bridge
“They started paving the road spanning the bridge
The long-awaited bridge replacement remains on track for a summer 2025 reopening
restoring a critical transportation link for residents and businesses on the city’s west side
“The people of the west side have been very patient,” Kraus said
He acknowledged that city officials have long assured residents the project was nearing completion but emphasized that significant
speaking at a recent Small Business Watch meeting
underscored the bridge’s importance and the extensive financial support behind the project
This bridge will soon reconnect two segments of the community that have been cut in half by the lack of a bridge.”
With major infrastructure and park improvements underway
city leaders say these projects will enhance connectivity
and quality of life for San Bernardino residents.
