CROWN POINT — A Chesterton teenager was sentenced to 20 years Tuesday for his role in a shooting that seriously injured two people last April will serve 15 years in the Department of Correction three years in Lake County Community Corrections' Kimbrough Work Release Program and two years on probation according to the terms of his plea agreement negotiated by the prosecution and defense 2024 while he and his co-defendants attempted to commit a robbery One victim was shot in the head and the other was shot in the throat and chest reached out to the victims earlier in the day and asked if he could purchase marijuana from them; however he and Woodward intended to take the drug without paying for it Second co-defendant and Rogers' girlfriend drove Rogers and Woodward to Gary to pick up third co-defendant Jehad Colvin and dropped all three of them off at the scene while she waited in her car one street over Lake Criminal Court Judge Samuel Cappas asked why the plea was "so lenient." He thought a lengthier sentence was warranted when he looked at the facts of the case Deputy Prosecutor Kasey Dafoe said the victims were not cooperative which made the case difficult to prosecute She said Woodward expressed the desire to take responsibility for his role in the crime since he was arrested She told the court the agreed sentence still requires a "significant" amount of prison time Defense attorney Cipriano Rodriguez said he concurred with Dafoe's statements about Woodward's willingness to accept responsibility for his actions and called him a "bright young man" who has been very respectful to him while the case was pending Rodriguez said he believes Woodward was manipulated by one of the co-defendants in the case During Rogers' sentencing hearing in March He told Cappas he attributed his actions the day of the robbery to being around the "wrong people." Rogers is serving a 12-year sentence for the crime while Colvin and Fraley's cases are pending Colvin and Fraley gave police conflicting stories about what happened They said they were allegedly under the impression there would be a robbery but did not anticipate that Woodward would pull out a gun and shoot When Woodward was given the opportunity to speak in court He said he wishes he could change what happened and has received guidance from mentors who provided him an opportunity for self-reflection while he has been incarcerated at the Lake County Juvenile Justice Complex "And this is not the path I want to continue down." Woodward said he hopes he can continue his introspection during his time in prison He expressed a desire to obtain his GED and secure a college degree in accounting or architecture The Region's Garrett Clark pulls up for three on Saturday April 19 at Indiana University Northwest in Gary The Region's Garrett Clark guards The Chi's E.J Berland on Saturday at Indiana University Northwest in Gary The Region's O'Mari Evans attempts a layup on Saturday at Indiana University Northwest in Gary The Region's Michael Wellman hits a layup on Saturday at Indiana University Northwest in Gary makes his way through a tunnel of arms with a new bike New bikes were given to kids from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Northwest Indiana and Hannah Crisman make their way through a tunnel of arms with a new bike Liz Underwood helps 6-year-old Edwin Arroyo from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Northwest Indiana try out his new bicycle and Beth White from the Dean and Barbara White Family Foundation chat Wednesday at the Tolleston Opportunity Campus groundbreaking ceremony in Gary Congressman Frank Mrvan addresses the Tolleston Opportunity Campus groundbreaking ceremony in Gary on Wednesday Congressman Frank Mrvan chat Wednesday at the Tolleston Opportunity Campus groundbreaking ceremony in Gary Students in Nicky Jackson's Wrongful Conviction course at Purdue University Northwest present their semester-long research on a 2007 murder case a senior criminal justice student minoring in psychology and sociology at Purdue University Northwest shares her semester long research on Linda Stermer's 2007 case Thursday Student Conservation Association members Joseph Jasaitis (left) Grace Tafolla and Devon Norfleet plant a tree as part of an Arbor Day event at Roxana Park on Friday East Chicago Central students Melanie Osuna (left) Jonathon Hampton and Leticia Arriaga dig a planting hole as part of a tree-planting event at Roxana Park on Friday Wheeler's assistant coach Alex Turner has a conference on the mound April 16 at the Steel Yard in Gary Wheeler's Nick Bravo can't tag Hebron's Josh Kenda at second on April 16 at the Steel Yard in Gary Get the latest in local public safety news with this weekly email Email notifications are only sent once a day Riding Shotgun with the Crown Point Fire Department Get up-to-the-minute news sent straight to your device Account processing issue - the email address may already exist Invalid password or account does not exist Submitting this form below will send a message to your email with a link to change your password An email message containing instructions on how to reset your password has been sent to the email address listed on your account One Lake Station water main has been repaired New Chicago Town Manager Sue Pelfrey tells Lakeshore Public Media that a break in the 3800 block of Liverpool Road was repaired by Monday evening since enough water pressure was maintained another water main break was reported Tuesday morning in the area of 36th Avenue Pelfrey says it's a smaller dead-end line in a wooded area and it doesn't appear any customers have been impacted New Chicago provides water service to portions of Lake Station leaving a Sound Transit station without power Angle Lake Station is closed due to a power outage caused by storm damage Link light service is suspended between the SeaTac/Airport Station and Angle Lake which provides support to the wires that power the trains There is also damage to a track switch and an electrical substation a Sound Transit spokesperson told KOMO News There is no estimated time for when repairs will be finished and the station will reopen The Link light rail 1 line is still operating between the Lynnwood City Center and SeaTac/Airport stations Riders can take a Metro Transit RapidRide A Line bus which runs between the Tukwila and Federal Way stations and stops at both the SeaTac/Airport and Angle Lake stations Find Sound Transit service alerts at this link. community in any way it can Mayor Bill Carroll recently provided a monetary donation to the Lake Station Community Schools with the hope of restoring and rebuilding its schools “The redevelopment commission made a generous donation of $50,000 to the school district,” Dr superintendent at Lake Station Community Schools “This donation will help reinstate some extracurricular activities that we had to cut due to the loss of our referendum back in November of 2023 The donation has helped bring back the elementary student council elementary publications and yearbook publications in our schools.”  This donation largely helped in the tutoring department for the students It restored study tables and several clubs in the schools Cripliver is a big supporter of how extracurricular programs provide unique benefits to the students He believes they are a necessity for any school and he’s grateful that many of them will be making their way back to Lake Station schools “They help enhance the teaching and instruction of each student,” Cripliver said “We're interested in developing good teamwork efforts and we were going to lose a lot of them if Mayor Bill Carroll and the redevelopment commission hadn’t made that generous donation.” The City of Lake Station has made it a point of emphasis to maintain a strong and supportive relationship with its schools Cripliver believes they wouldn’t be able to accomplish many of the projects the school corporation planned without the support of their team Carroll is pleased with the atmosphere they’ve constructed within their schools in Lake Station “I would not be mayor if it wasn't for what happens in our schools,” Carroll said “The educational aspect is the most important thing but the extracurricular activities really help make you who you are as a person It teaches you things that you wouldn't necessarily learn in the classroom.” A donation like this goes a long way for helping structure a blossoming community like Lake Station Carroll views this donation as an opportunity to continue building upon the foundation the City has been creating for most of the past decade “We’re a small community that wants to help our schools and small businesses,” Carroll said “I looked at numbers that I had through redevelopment and felt there was no better way to develop than investing into our students When I presented that to our redevelopment commission We want what’s best for our kids and the entire community a positive Lake Station where people are safe and our schools are great We need this referendum in order to continue moving forward as a community.”  The referendum is based on the educational structure for students While this monetary donation will certainly benefit the future outlook of the schools both Carroll and Cripliver are asking for some support on this upcoming referendum to ensure they can turn these desired student benefits into a reality Cripliver and Carroll will be showing numbers in their upcoming school board meetings on October 2 and 26 Their goal is to be as transparent with the community for the ultimate goal of supporting the educational system in Lake Station For Center — and Google is paying to build the redesigned easier-to-find entrance to the heavily used transportation hub The station entrance within the Thompson Center on Lake Steet will move next year to the northeast corner of the building on Clark Street The Thompson Center is under construction to become Google’s new Chicago headquarters The CTA shared sleek conceptual renderings of proposed station makeover after the transit agency’s board voted Wednesday to amend its 1984 easement agreement with the building’s owner Google purchased the building from the state for $105 million in 2022 said the changes to the station will be mostly cosmetic but also improve people’s ability to find the station is kind of buried underneath our structure in the middle of Lake Street .. “It gets lost in the clutter of that space.” Moving the entrance to the corner of Clark and Lake puts it at a “very predominant point on the corner,” he said Renovation costs will be covered by Google’s subsidiary that runs the building The new entrance should be completed by November 2025 the CTA plans its own $10 million improvement to the platform over Lake Street told the board he was excited about the partnership with Google He said the station announcement is the “baseline of what the improvements are going to be.” He said he hopes Google can “test out” other improvements “in the area of technology and connectivity.” Google has said it will keep the atrium open to the public as it had been when the building was still owned by the state and featured a driver’s services facility in its basement The CTA’s Clark/Lake station is a major hub in the Loop serving an average of 9,100 riders each weekday Riders can get to both airports from the station and it serves six of the agency’s eight rail lines Growing pains are set to continue next month for a station on MARTA’s east-west line temporarily blocking access from adjoining neighborhoods.  MARTA plans to close the south entrance of East Lake station to swap its existing pedestrian bridge with an upgraded one that spans College Avenue into Kirkwood.  Closures will bar access to the station from its south parking lot transit hub is located at the Atlanta-Decatur city line A similar bridge replacement on the station’s north side also required closures last year.  all customers will have to use the north pedestrian bridge (and park in the north lot if arriving by car) to access Blue Line trains A free shuttle will offer rides between the south and north lots during service hours Expect temporary road closures and detours on College Avenue as the old bridge is deconstructed and new one installed.  and 34 will also be rerouted to the north side of the station The new StationSoccer soccer pitches and parking on the north side will remain open Demolition work began at the station in March as part of MARTA's Station Rehabilitation Program a multi-year renovation planned for all 38 rail stations across the system MARTA officials have said the East Lake project will add a “cleaner safer” bridge system to the transit hub with improved Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility the recently completed north pedestrian bridge (spanning West Howard Avenue) features a new elevator Other improvements around the station will include upgraded ADA ramps The work is part of MARTA’s Service, Experience, and Expansion program—or SEE—which the agency has called a priority for fiscal year 2024 Also included in SEE efforts is MARTA’s first bus rapid transit line (scheduled to open from downtown to Summerhill and Peoplestown this year) and the debut of new rail cars and more climate-friendly electric buses Other initiatives include station renovations at Bankhead along with the addition of “smart” restrooms and resurfaced and re-striped parking lots Twitter / Facebook/and now: Instagram   • Kirkwood news, discussion (Urbanize Atlanta)
