The coroner has released the identity of a 22-year-old man who was killed when a drunk driver crashed an SUV into a home near Lake Villa on Christmas Eve
An autopsy performed Thursday showed Axel Maldonado Guerrero
died as a result of blunt force injuries to the head as a result of a vehicle crash
according to Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek
Prosecutors on Thursday filed additional charges against a man accused of driving over three times the legal limit and crashing into a home near Lake Villa
was charged in December with aggravated driving under the influence causing death
reckless homicide and driving under the influence
the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved charges of reckless homicide
multiple counts of aggravated driving under the influence causing death and multiple counts of aggravated driving under the influence causing great bodily harm
Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said the charges stem from a crash into a home around 7:25 p.m
on December 24 in the 21300 block of West Engle Drive in unincorporated Lake Villa
Corona-Vargas’s vehicle crossed into the westbound lane of traffic and then back into the eastbound lane
Corona-Vargas drove off the roadway on the south side
Covelli said Friday that lab results showed Corona-Vargas was under the influence of alcohol as well as THC
He was released from the hospital a week after the crash into the custody of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and transported to the Lake County Jail
Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Nicholas Shepherd said beer cans were found inside the Jeep
The seriously injured passenger told investigators they had been drinking at a friend’s house and that Corona-Vargas had a lot of beer — approximately five or six
Shepherd said Corona-Vargas admitted to driving 50-55 mph in a 30 mph zone after drinking beer
He said he lost control of the car and that there was ice on the ground
Corona-Vargas’s blood alcohol content was 0.27
said that Corona-Vargas had approximately 14 staples in his head after being released from the hospital and needed to undergo spinal surgery
Ritacca said Corona-Vargas’ family is close with the victim’s family and Corona-Vargas’ family attended a funeral and celebration of life for the victim
During a detention hearing following his arrest
Ritacca argued for Corona-Vargas’ release pending trial and said that his client is not a danger to the community as he cannot drive due to his injuries
very sad and it is an incident that is not with intent
It was an incident that could not be avoided at 6 o’clock at night Christmas Eve where he hit a patch of ice,” Ritacca said
adding that the victim may still be alive if the airbags had deployed
The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a petition to detain Corona-Vargas pending trial
which was granted by Lake County Judge Michael Nerheim
“The defendant’s actions in this instant offense demonstrates his threat to the community as he put his life and the life of his friends in danger,” Shepherd said
adding that Maldonado Guerrero lost his life as a result of Corona-Vargas’ decision to drive under the influence
Nerheim said Corona-Vargas poses a real and present danger to the community and that no conditions of release could mitigate the threat
is scheduled to appear in court again on Monday
A judge reversed his decision and released a Gurnee woman who prosecutors say threatened to shoot a clerk while implying she was armed during a failed robbery at a gas station near Lake Villa
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded around 12:25 p.m
36809 North Route 83 in unincorporated Lake Villa
Sheriff’s deputies arrived and learned that a woman entered the gas station
implied that she had a firearm and demanded cash from the clerk
The clerk refused the woman’s demands and the woman attempted to break into the cash register herself
fled in a black SUV with out-of-state license plates after not having any success with accessing the cash
Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Nicholas Shepherd said Lintner used her hand in the shape of a gun under her sweatshirt to imply she was armed during the robbery
Lintner demanded the clerk give all of the money in the register or she would shoot him
The clerk refused to open the register and Lintner tried opening it herself but failed
Shepherd said the woman then again threatened to shoot the clerk and tried to steal the clerk’s phone but was unsuccessful
Video surveillance was recovered capturing the attempted robbery
Sheriff’s deputies at the scene used Flock license plate reader technology to determine the vehicle likely used in the robbery was a Ford Expedition
Sheriff’s dispatchers issued a countywide broadcast to other law enforcement with the information
Gurnee police officers located the vehicle after a Flock camera in the area detected the offending vehicle
Sheriff’s deputies responded to the area of Grand Avenue and Hunt Club Road near Walmart where police officers had the offending vehicle pulled over
Lintner was the driver and positively identified as being responsible for committing the attempted robbery
Shepherd said Lintner admitted to being at the gas station earlier in the day and committing the robbery but claimed someone else was forcing her to do it
Sheriff’s deputies arrested her and transported her to the Lake County Jail
The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the charge of attempted aggravated robbery
“Through diligent work and collaboration
our deputies tracked down and apprehended an offender who posed a threat to others
I’m proud of everyone involved—our telecommunicators who issued the alert
and our law enforcement partners who helped locate this offender,” Lake County Sheriff John D
The state’s attorney’s office filed a petition to detain Lintner while awaiting trial
Shepherd said the woman was a threat to the community by her actions in implying she was armed and making threats to shoot the clerk
A public defender for Lintner said her client was cooperative with police and that prosecutors “utterly failed” to show Lintner is a danger to the community and that conditions of release could not be imposed
Lake County Judge Michael Nerheim granted the petition to detain Lintner in the Lake County Jail during a detention hearing on January 2
The judge said Lintner’s actions could have caused people inside the store to panic not knowing whether she was actually armed or not
after being denied money from the register
tried opening the register herself and then attempted to steal the clerk’s phone
The judge said no conditions of release could ensure the community’s safety
Public defenders for Lintner filed a motion for relief with the court — the first step required before the decision can be appealed to the Illinois Second District Appellate Court
A hearing on the 12-page motion was held on Tuesday where Lintner’s attorneys sought the judge to reverse his decision
Prosecutors objected to Lintner’s release
Nerheim granted the motion and reversed his prior decision
saying that he failed to consider certain factors required under Illinois law
pending trial with conditions that she not possess any weapons
not have contact with the Citgo and be placed on electronic home monitoring
Lintner is scheduled to appear in court again on January 22 for a status of preliminary hearing
Authorities say a woman was taken into custody after she tried robbing a gas station near Lake Villa while implying she was armed with a gun Wednesday afternoon

was identified as being responsible for committing the attempted robbery
Lintner is set to appear in First Appearance Court Thursday morning where the state’s attorney’s office intends to file a petition to detain Lintner while awaiting trial

No one was injured after a three-alarm fire destroyed a garage and a house in unincorporated Lake Villa Tuesday afternoon
The Lake Villa Fire Protection District and Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded around 12:15 p.m
Tuesday to the 39300 block of North Cedar Crest Drive in unincorporated Lake Villa for a structure fire
Firefighters arrived to find two structures – a detached garage and a two-story house – engulfed in flames
Lake Villa Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Dane Costello told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that all the residents were able to evacuate
Fire officials believe the garage was the first to catch fire
A large column of smoke was seen in the distance
Crews conducted defensive fire operations the entire time but did enter the structure at least once
A fire ladder truck was also deployed to attack the fire from above
Water tenders were called to the scene because the area does not have fire hydrants
Costello was relieved that the winds happened to be blowing from the west to the east where there were no other houses downwind
“Had it been blowing in the other direction
it probably would’ve caught the adjacent house on fire,” Costello said
The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated to the third alarm level
bringing apparatus from fire departments throughout Lake and McHenry counties
Some fire apparatus on the fourth and fifth alarm levels responded to the scene to backfill for the previous alarm levels
but the two structures were a “total loss.”
Firefighters remained on the scene until around 5:35 p.m
A damage estimate or cause of fire was not immediately available
Several fire departments are assisting the Lake Villa Fire Protection District with the investigation
