after enjoying dinner at a local Lakewood taco restaurant
we headed home along the edge of Lake Steilacoom
As we drove past the boat launch I was surprised to see an empty lot
Over a year ago, March 28th, 2024, the Suburban Times shared this story about a home that was taken from a local family
King 5 shared that The City of Lakewood had plans
which included a parking lot where the million dollar home used to stand
The included picture shows the empty lot of grass
“New Grass/Please Let Me Grow”
Am I the only one that is confused as to what is going on
As we move into peak park season The City took the time and effort to plant
where a parking lot was supposed to be built
With the congestion that happens around the boat launch why is there grass and not the planned parking lot
If The City had no immediate plans then why did they displace a family from their home
I distrust our Federal Government and sometimes our State Government
It is a shame when you begin to distrust the lowest and most local level of government
Oh and my review of the restaurant… Check out this review of Sugar Bones Tacos on Google Maps

In 2023 there was public engagement and input
the City was applying for funds to start the work
then the same problem pops up once again.
We could definitely ask the city and I’ve heard there was an issue regarding paving the lot
but without asking the city (which I doubt they’ll be forthright with an answer) we might not know the “truth”
Eminent domain is a form of “taking” but the property owner is compensated for it
Thanks for the questions around the status of Edgewater Park and why things are still waiting to be developed
Last spring the Lakewood City Council approved an updated master plan for Edgewater Park
The plan prioritized three goals for the development of this site which include creating water access
shoreline restoration and safety improvements
Proposed improvements include accessible pathways throughout the site
as well as moving and creating a new boat launch with designated vehicle and trailer parking
The city has applied for several grants to support the proposed improvements
We appreciate that people want to see the park improvements right away
the city must follow all development and permitting requirements near a shoreline
The anticipated timeline for improvements are:
The park and open space areas are available for our community to enjoy now
and everyone can look forward to future park improvements that will create opportunities to gather as a community and enjoy the beauty of Lake Steilacoom

six errors and six wild pitches on its way to a 24-3 victory

Reese Lindblom started the fifth with a single

Lead Pastor Leo Vollbracht's focus is on his community members who have begun seeking refuge in the shadow of an immense gash torn into the roof by the storm
"Our foremost goal is to be there for our community in this time of need," said Vollbracht

First United Pastor Tim Barton and Faith Responders Executive Director Laura Lambert lead the aid team
while Vollbracht is coordinating safety efforts
"Helping people is our foremost priority," said Vollbracht
then we can devote more and more time to repairing and rebuilding."
The church does have a second building that can be used for worship and services
that building is being used a staging area for supply donations and shelter
we start at where the most need is," said Lambert
The church is also providing hot showers and care bags

St. Lucie County Sheriff Keith Pearson told residents to stay out of Spanish Lakes Country Club Village in a press conference Friday, where deputies are carrying out rescues and six people reportedly died
In Lakewood Park, less than 3 miles away, a church, gas station and homes were destroyed

Residents posted videos and photos of the aftermath on social media

Hurricane Milton: Lakewood Park Methodist Church damaged, but carrying on with its mission
FORT PIERCE, Fla. — In St. Lucie County, neighborhoods of Lakewood Park and White City were slammed with 3 to 6 inches of rainfall Thursday evening
inundating roads and neighborhoods in just a few hours
Many of you reached out to us concerned your drainage systems weren't doing the job
"It was intense," said resident Jim Archer
The water was up the road — all over the place and park."
"The swales throughout Lakewood Park are now full and there is no drainage happening because the pumps aren't running," wrote another resident in an email to WPTV
"Perhaps WPTV can look into this issue and get some answers."
We took those concerns to County Commissioner Cathy Townsend
who told us the community's pump was indeed not running until well after rainfall started dumping on the area
the pump should have been on yesterday morning," said Townsend
WATCH: WPTV speaks to drivers stuck in floodwaters at California
Townsend herself came to check out the flooding in the Fort Pierce neighborhood after residents began reaching out to her and to us
"There has been a problem out here for many
Townsend says when the community was originally built
there was no agreement between the developer and the water management to drain rising water unless it was a state of emergency
they were only required to take two inches per day," said Townsend
Townsend says residents pay $25 per year to be a part of the district
so the water district does drain water every day that it needs to
the only way to do that is through the community's sole water pump on Green Dolphin
which Townsend said can only be turned on when the culvert reaches a certain level and when water management is notified
The county is working on replacing that pump with a new $4.5 million drainage system
paid for by grants and county funds at no cost to taxpayers
"So we’re going to make sure that this doesn’t happen again and I do want the residents of Lakewood Park to know that we’re on this," said Townsend
"I'm hopeful that within a year from now we won't even have to have this conversation."
For one, both Townsend and County Director of Communications Erick Gill said public works crews found multiple culverts that were clogged or even crumbling while swales, designed to drain rainwater runoff
Gill said crews found at least 21 culverts blocked in White City alone
which are the responsibility of the resident to maintain
"I was out here [in Lakewood Park] last night with Road & Bridge and they were literally pulling mattresses out of swales where people have just dumped mattresses," said Townsend
Complicating the issue further was the amount of rainfall dumping on St
Lucie County in such a short amount of time
when you pour water and you pour too quickly
Gill said the county-wide drainage system handles about four inches of water per hour
The quick torrent of rain soaking already saturated ground created a perfect storm
"The drainage systems are only designed to handle so much
and we got more capacity than it was designed to handle," said Gill
"If we continue to see more events like this
is the county looking at potentially expanding or changing the drainage system to meet changing weather patterns?" WPTV's Kate Hussey asked Gill
"We need to start looking at additional standards and changing the parameters," said Gill
Gill said the county has a resilience meeting Monday to discuss this very issue
and Townsend said commissioners are constantly talking about ways to improve drainage
particularly as the county sees increasing development
"There is always room for improvement," said Townsend
The county also now has a Culvert Assistance Program for residents to come and have their culverts fixed or cleared by the county
which Townsend and Gill encourage residents to utilize
To take advantage of it, call 772-462-1435 or email waterquality@stlucieco.org.

LAKEWOOD, Colo. — The exotic creature, later identified as a Patagonian mara, that was spotted at a Lakewood park in July has not been seen since then and has likely died
A park naturalist with Bear Creek Lake Park
posted on the park's Facebook page to share the news
"The mara was illegally released into the park sometime just before the 4th of July," the post reads
"We had several reports from park users and staff
as well as photos and videos of these encounters
After consulting with Colorado Parks and Wildlife
we determined that the mara was likely the product of the illegal pet trade as it was very docile and not easily startled by humans or other wildlife."
In early July
operations manager for the City of Lakewood's Community Resources Department
and Kara Van Hoose with CPW told Denver7 that their departments received multiple reports about the animal from both rangers and park visitors
Park staff and CPW set multiple baited traps hidden in the park for weeks
CPW was in discussions with the Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance and Cheyenne Mountain Zoo
to see if they could possibly take in an additional animal
Watch Denver7's report from July about the discovery of the Patagonian mara
"After several weeks without success and no new sightings
we removed the traps," the park naturalist said
"With this mara being docile and in an unfamiliar ecosystem
we can assume that nature took its course and one of our native predators played a role."
In their natural habitat in central and southern Argentina
Patagonian maras resemble capybaras, which is one of their closest relatives, according to Zoo Atlanta
"The general form of Patagonian maras is that of a long-legged rodent with a body similar to a hoofed animal," the Smithsonian's National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute said.
Their long legs help them reach speeds up to 35 mph
They tend to prefer grasslands and brushy areas that have plenty of open space
If anybody sees any strange animals at the park
contact the Bear Creek Lake Park Visitors Center at 303-697-6159 or CPW at 303-297-1192
Colorado wildlife law generally prohibits the live possession of native and exotic wildlife
"An escaped exotic animal could potentially hybridize with a native species; cause habitat destruction; or compete for habitat space with native species," CPW's website reads
"Captive-raised wildlife also pose a potential threat for the introduction of disease into native populations
All of these complex factors must be taken into account when managing privately held live wildlife in the state of Colorado."
Dumping of pets — exotic or otherwise — in Colorado is illegal

Upgrades to Lakewood Park South in Tecumseh are just steps away from starting
Tecumseh council will meet on Tuesday evening with a report to award tender of the Lakewood Park Improvement Project Phase 1 to Bear Construction and Engineering Inc
This $4.3-million project will see a number of improvements added such as an all-season washroom facility
the Town was looking to install a parking barrier arm gate system for added security enhancements
These upgrades would be located in the north end of the park
"Lakewood Park is one of our gems in terms of the community
It's going to undergo a significant improvement featuring an all-season washroom facility
so we're really excited to see all of this come together."
He says it will be a great entertainment location
"Seeing the pavilion there with a food truck plaza
even a bocce - believe it or not - there's going to be a new bocce
two lane bowling there for those who love that game
and we're excited to see that in this space too."
Bachetti says he's hopeful construction will start this spring
"It's not going to disrupt any of the park
they put on the Taste of Tecumseh Food and Wine Festival there
The cost was originally estimated at $3.1-million
meaning council will need to approve pulling just over $1-million from the Infrastructure Reserve Fund due to an additional funding increase

LAKEWOOD, Colo. — The developer of a controversial apartment complex near Belmar Park is suing the City of Lakewood following the passage of a citizen-led ordinance
Neighbors have been fighting to protect the park and its green space for more than a year
They claim the project would reach the sidewalk near the park and bring around 900 more people to the area
impacting the wildlife that calls the open space home
Cathy Kentner has been speaking out to keep the open space as is
"Because of the natural sanctuary that already exists and the overbuilding that is proposed here that would destroy that habitat," she said
a developer who did not want to dedicate some of the existing green space on their property to the City of Lakewood for parkland was required to pay a fee in lieu of the dedication
Those fees were then used for improvements to other parks and open spaces in Lakewood
Kentner's organization, Save Open Space Lakewood, pushed through an ordinance that removed the option for developers to pay the fee-in-lieu. The Lakewood City Council approved that change in November
Kairoi Properties, LLC., the developer behind the 412-unit luxury apartment building planned for the area near the open space, has filed a lawsuit against the city
then they will be allowed to continue as if the people and their request to protect our environment and to have reasonable development — as if we never existed," Kentner said
Kairo Properties claims the amount of land that would need to be dedicated under the ordinance is larger than the property itself
The company is asking a judge to stop the city from enforcing this new rule
"It's possible to develop and not take away these natural spaces that everyone needs for their physical and mental well-being," Kentner said
"We are just begging our elected officials to sit down and come up with something that respects everybody
that actually brings everybody to the table."
Denver7 contacted the City of Lakewood for a statement but was told officials were unavailable due to the holiday
Denver7 also reached out to Kairoi Properties
but did not hear back as of the publication of this article
the City of Lakewood used more than 2 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of solar energy to power its municipal facilities and operations

Many of Lakewood’s city-owned facilities are now or close to being 100% electrically powered by renewable energy

The city is continuing to expand our renewable energy portfolio to reduce emissions
and achieve the community’s vision to generate 45% of all municipal energy needs from renewable sources by 2025.

The city purchased 274 kW of solar energy from a community solar garden in 2014
The city’s facilities receive energy from Xcel’s standard grid mix
as well as solar energy produced from the Renewable*Connect and community solar garden subscriptions
The solar energy from the off-site subscriptions is allocated to various electricity meters for smaller municipal facilities
The standard grid mix feeds the city’s largest facilities (Civic Center
