Hours after the Washington Commanders announced an agreement had been reached with D.C. on a plan to relocate the team to the old RFK Stadium site, Maryland Gov Wes Moore said the state made a “good faith” and “very strong” offer to keep the team at Northwest Stadium in Landover Speaking at an unrelated event in Riverdale on Monday afternoon he was “very clear” he felt Maryland was the best place for the NFL team to play The Commanders have a lease at Northwest Stadium through 2027 and team owner Josh Harris has said he wants a new facility to be ready by 2030 “We made what I think is not just a good faith but a very strong offer for them,” Moore said “But they were just very clear that they wanted the Washington Commanders in Washington You had an ownership group that paid a lot of money for that team Moore said the franchise made it known that they “wanted to return the team to its spiritual home of Washington Moore and Harris signed a memorandum of understanding which said the Commanders would be responsible for tearing down Northwest Stadium and redeveloping the area if the team opted to relocate Moore said he has “very real confidence that they are going to hold to their word and they’re going to do what they promised to the people of the state of Maryland.” Moore said he expressed his desire that the owners “were not just going to leave Maryland with a ‘RFK Stadium’ with an empty stadium that people are just looking around saying The team’s decision to relocate is the second seemingly-major economic blow to Maryland in the last few months The General Services Administration selected Greenbelt as the location for the next FBI headquarters in 2023 President Donald Trump said he would halt those plans because he wants to keep the agency in D.C When asked specifically about the possible consequences of those two things Moore said most Marylanders aren’t thinking about the team’s return to Washington they’re focusing on what can be done to make the Landover neighborhood where Northwest Stadium sits better “The commitment that I have is what we are seeing now “That’s a commitment that we’re making to the people of Prince George’s County They can be actually very optimistic about what the future of the land is going to look like.” Many county residents said they understand the team’s desire to move back to D.C But some of that hope is conditional on the notion that the redevelopment of the current Landover stadium site will be thoughtful Musician Frank Marshall and his friend Saint John live near Northwest Stadium Both are longtime fans and said they’re pleased the Commanders want to move back to D.C They said they understand the ownership group has a desire to be more closely identified with the city they’re named after the nostalgia for it being at RFK reminds me of when me and my dad went to games as a kid,” Marshall said He said he’s a longtime ticket holder and has attended hundreds of games at both stadiums but said the Commanders have never been able to recreate the stadium-shaking days at RFK Stadium has the ‘it factor,’” John said “It always had that ‘it factor’ when it came to sports teams the question many Prince George’s County residents are asking is: What comes next at Northwest Stadium Council approves the new stadium proposal and the Commanders move back to the city They’ve seen what happened at RFK Stadium — as the former home of the Washington Senators along with the football team — which has been unused and in a state of disrepair for several years John and Marshall said Prince George’s County has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to significantly improve Landover “I would like to see it be a major investment for the community But this right here was not it,” John said known professionally as Frank “Scooby” Sirius with the renowned Chuck Brown Band lives about a mile from Northwest Stadium and has performed there they’ll turn it into an events space-living space-retail,” he said longtime Prince George’s County resident Joy Brown knows what she doesn’t want at the site if it’s redeveloped “A lot of shopping centers do not survive when they build them here indicating she’d prefer a mix of more affordable and high-end housing Resident Nick Rodriguez said whatever happens with the team he doesn’t want his neighborhood to be home to an empty stadium falling into disrepair “I hope it doesn’t become like what happened at RFK That wouldn’t be nice for the neighborhood,” he said Get breaking news and daily headlines delivered to your email inbox by signing up Washington Commanders would be leaving Maryland 7News obtained a 3-page “Memorandum of Understanding” between the team and Maryland Governor Wes Moore about what would happen to the current Northwest stadium An important point from the Memorandum of Understanding included that the demolition of the aging stadium will start no later than 90 days after the team starts playing at a new stadium They’ll work together to transform the site into a “vibrant mixed-use development.” The development must be “responsive to local needs.” team owner Josh Harris said that only he would do right by the community we’ve made commitments in Maryland as to making that site a great site," Harris said Governor Wes Moore said he tried to keep the team in Maryland but that was always going to be a losing battle “They were clear from the first time they purchased the team for over $6B that they wanted to return the team to its spiritual home of Washington “But we also knew that with the early conversations with the ownership group of the Washington Commanders that they were not just going to leave Maryland with an RFK stadium With an empty stadium with people just looking around Their commitment is to both pay for the tear down and be the master developer also be able to work with state and local officials and the community to be able to have something that is prosperous and more involved than what we have right now which is essentially 200 acres that’s used eight times a year.” Acting Prince George’s County Executive Tara Jackson also released the following statement: “Prince George’s County has been proud to call the Washington Commanders our home team for nearly three decades we look forward to hosting them over the next five years and working with the Commanders organization on a bold vision to redevelop the Northwest Stadium site into something truly transformational This moment presents an extraordinary opportunity—not just for football fans but for families and small businesses across the County We remain fully committed to redeveloping the Landover site into a dynamic mixed-use sports and entertainment district that enhances the fan experience and benefits our community year-round Anchored by the growing Blue Line Corridor and creating the kinds of amenities our residents have long deserved We’ve already committed $500 million in public investment to bring signature venues and infrastructure upgrades to this corridor—investments that have helped spark nearly $2 billion in private development including $750 million from minority developers and we’re excited to keep building on this momentum Our work continues to ensure that Prince Georgians are not just spectators but stakeholders in the region’s growth The team’s legacy here will remain a meaningful part of that story We look forward to cheering on the Commanders continuing on-field success Commanders owner Josh Harris and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser recently announced plans to bring the franchise back to its roots at the RFK Stadium While some fans are excited to see the Commanders return to Washington "It's a political game bringing in John Riggins and Joe Gibbs," NFL analyst Mike Florio said on a recent episode of Pro Football Talk and it's all a show aimed at getting people behind the project and aimed at shouting down those who would be opposed to it." Florio took issue with how the deal was presented to the public—particularly the framing of the headline announcing $2.7 billion investment "I've got a statement from the D.C ‘$2.7 billion investment from the Commanders is the single largest private investment in District history,’ in bold and big letters at the top—because that's how you get people to not notice the taxpayer money that's going to be added to it USA; Washington Commanders owner Josh Harris in attendance of the game against the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stadium the announcement attempts to downplay the potential burden on taxpayers and I'm not saying I'm for it or against it I just think this is part of the game that you have to play in an era where people aren't all that thrilled about public money being contributed to multibillionaires.” emphasizing how public officials may be trying to shape the narrative: How do we take this and spin it in a way that sounds good It's the biggest private investment that's ever been made it's probably gonna be a pretty damn big public investment too—but it's the biggest private investment that's ever been made in the District of Columbia." Florio said he supports democracy and wants transparency regarding stadium investments especially decisions that could affect taxpayers who are also fans “At a time when there's a lot of talk about the future of democracy Why are they trying to hide from the taxpayers And I know that they elect their representatives But they know not to give them a voice because you know what they will say—when the question is: should we give a lot of our public money to somebody who's worth but it also reignites long-standing debates about stadium financing—who foots the bill and who ultimately benefits READ MORE: Commanders pick reveals he was pranked called on draft day Stick with CommanderGameday and the Locked On Commanders podcast for more FREE coverage of the Washington Commanders throughout the 2025 offseason • Commanders setting Jayden Daniels up for success with Round 1 pick • Commanders starter undergoes surgery ahead of 2025 season • Commanders linked to Ohio State WR in 2026 mock draft • Commanders linked to signing two-time Super Bowl champ in free agency The content on this site is for entertainment and educational purposes only Betting and gambling content is intended for individuals 21+ and is based on individual commentators' opinions and not that of Sports Illustrated or its affiliates All picks and predictions are suggestions only and not a guarantee of success or profit If you or someone you know has a gambling problem crisis counseling and referral services can be accessed by calling 1-800-GAMBLER Wes Moore is hoping to transform the current site of Northwest Stadium in Landover into a bustling entertainment district that makes the Prince George’s County neighborhood an attraction The area where the Commanders’ stadium currently sits is a “disappointment,” Moore said Monday afternoon after an appearance at a quantum event in Riverdale which he said will be fine-tuned after community input play environment.” It will include housing and entertainment Moore outlined his ideas for the site’s future hours after Commanders owner Josh Harris and D.C Mayor Muriel Bowser detailed their agreement to build a new stadium at the old RFK Stadium site part of a broader plan to relocate the franchise to the city “It’s one of the worst football experiences but literally said by football writers in the entire country,” Moore said of the Northwest Stadium facility “It’s something that is 200 acres that is used eight times a year for a few hours during that time period.” The fact the Commanders are returning to D.C. is not something that people are “really thinking heavily about is that area going to be better than what it is right now?” Moore and Harris signed a memorandum of understanding in December a step that Moore described as a protection for the Maryland suburb in the event the team left for another location the team has to pay for what Moore described as the “tear down,” in addition to being the master developer of the site’s future He’s also “making sure that they’re going to pay for all the work and the funding behind the research around it.” Asked whether the team will follow through on its commitments Moore said he’s “very confident” that they’ll keep their word He said the two sides have had ongoing conversations about it Whatever comes next at the Landover site will have community involvement The Commanders’ current lease at Northwest Stadium runs through 2027 Harris has expressed a desire to start the 2030 season at a new stadium in D.C The nearly $4 billion agreement for the team’s future home includes a 65,000-seat stadium that would have a roof city leaders said at a news conference Monday (7News) — An 18-year-old Landover man was charged in the fatal shooting of a 26-year-old man police say he knew Sunday evening according to Prince George's County police Raymond Terry III was charged with first- and second-degree murder in the death of Vincent Fisher III Officers were called to a report of a shooting in the 2000 block of East Marlboro Avenue at 6:50 p.m Once police arrived, they found Fisher inside an SUV suffering from a gunshot wound. "Our priority has always been ensuring that the Landover community will see a transformative new development in the years ahead, regardless of the stadium decision," Governor Moore said. The Governor said that his administration executed an MOU, Memorandum of Understanding, months ago with the ownership group of the Washington Commanders to outline what's to happen with Northwest Stadium in Landover. Per the Governor's Office, the ownership group committed to carrying out the demolition of the stadium within the first 90 days of the first game in the new stadium, along with providing maintenance and security at the site as redevelopment begins.
