People can kick off Earth Month by getting some dirt under their nails
The Lower Mainland Green Team and the Township of Langley are kicking off Earth Month with a community habitat restoration activity at Routley Park on Saturday
abilities and backgrounds are invited to join
This is the first of nine activities the team is organizing in partnership with the Township this year
Dialogue and debate are integral to a free society and we welcome and encourage you to share your views on the issues of the day. We ask that you be respectful of others and their points of view, refrain from personal attacks and stay on topic. Volunteer weed pullers had a unique dilemma when they showed up to help remove invasives at Routley Park last Saturday – running out of weeds to pull
But the organizers pivoted to another park needing attention – Meadows Edge Park
A total of 39 community members came together to remove invasive Himalayan blackberry this past Saturday
"The location of this activity changed at the last minute to Meadows Edge Park due to there not being enough invasive plants for the people signed up to remove at Routley Park
It's a great problem to have and means that the efforts of our team and the Township of Langley are being incredibly effective together," said Ashton Kerr
Lower Mainland Green Team partnerships manager
21 were visiting Meadows Edge Park for the first time (despite a large majority of participants being residents)
and 13 were removing invasive plants for the first time
They removed five cubic metres or 31 bathtubs full of Himalayan blackberries. For many
and make a meaningful difference, Kerr said
“I think this event helped make the park a better place,” shared Icy
a local youth who joined the activity with her family
“It showed me that even though I’m just a kid
Seeing all the blackberries we pulled out made me feel proud.”
This activity built on restoration work by the Langley Environmental Partners Society (LEPS) and their TD Tree Days planting at this park in October 2024
"LEPS does incredible work in the Township and we want to build and uplift the work they are doing whenever we can
Joining their wide variety of programming is a great way for local residents to get further involved in caring for nature in their community," Kerr added
The weed pull was the first of nine being organized this year in partnership with the Township
The Lower Mainlands next activity was at Meadows Edge Park Wednesday
April 16 when more than 70 local Grade 3 to 5 students hit the park to remove invasive plants
Metro Vancouver has announced the creation of a new regional park in South Langley
combining an existing municipal park with a newly-purchased piece of private property
The new South Langley Regional Park totals 44 hectares (108.7 acres) and includes the former Municipal Natural Park
and a piece of former private property nearby
because with all the development in this area
park land is becoming more important," said Lisa Coulthard
who was out for a walk with Stephen Toban and their dogs
Coulthard said the park is always well used and she sees hikers
and people walking their dogs whenever she visits
is accessible off 224 Street near 4 Avenue and extends to the east
Metro Vancouver bought the new parcel of land for $6.13 million
Metro Vancouver is helping to keep the region livable for future generations of residents and visitors,” said Mike Hurley
chair of Metro Vancouver’s Board of Directors
“I’m proud to see us making real progress on our parkland acquisition strategy and look forward to strolling through this new park.”
including portions of the Little Campbell River and Kerfoot Creek
The park also includes existing walking and equestrian trails and buffers the South Langley Regional Trail
we can create great new rural parks for Langley
but for the region," said Township Mayor Eric Woodward. "I really value the role Metro Vancouver plays operating parks within our region
He said the new park will significantly expand the quality of protected natural spaces in Langley for generations to come
it’s important that we keep up with the demand for green spaces to walk
and simply pause and take a breath,” said John McEwen
Chair of Metro Vancouver’s Regional Parks Committee and Vice Chair of the Metro Vancouver Board.
The park is not that far from the largest regional park in Langley
the eventual goal is a linear "green necklace" surrounding the South Langley Regional Trail
which starts at Campbell Valley Regional Park in the west and runs all the way to Aldergrove Regional Park in the east
The park trail is to have several natural and recreational nodes along its route
giving places where people can stop and connect with nature
and allowing parts of the trail to be moved off-road
which was formerly private land, will not immediately open to the public
although the former Township site will be open immediately. A plan for the new land will be developed starting next year
Metro Vancouver intends to continue adding to the park as land becomes available
a pattern it has also followed with the growth of Campbell Valley Regional Park over the past decades

Medical staff help residents evacuate the Granite Ledges on Friday night after a two-alarm fire caused them to go into the street before being bused over to Concord Hospital
Residents of the Granite Ledges assisted living and memory care unit huddled in the cafeteria of Concord Hospital late Friday night
evacuated from their apartments after a fire broke out in the senior care facility earlier in the evening
they waited for emergency officials to let them know if they could return to their bedrooms or would be brought to a new location
Concord Fire evacuated 61 residents and as well as support staff after locating a fire in the attic of the building who were moved to the hospital via facility buses
The combination of the building’s size with the medical needs of the patients intensified the required response
Concord Fire Battalion Chief Jeff Stone explained
we have a huge life hazard because we have a lot of elderly folks here who can’t really take care of themselves,” he said
“We did call a lot of mutual aid in because of the type of building it is: it’s a huge building
The initial call reported the smell of smoke
and crews located a fire in the roof area of the upper floors
It took about an hour to knock the fire down
and the cause was still being investigated late Saturday night
“The staff here did a great job of herding all of their people out and keeping them in one area,” Stone said
“Once we knew we did have an incident going on with a working fire
we were able to use some of the facility buses to take them over to Concord Hospital’s cafeteria where we’ve been caring for people over there.”
some family members strode briskly into the building to sit with their loved ones
many of whom sat with blankets over their shoulders
Medical staff from the hospital huddled together over laptops or knelt by patients
supported by paramedics from local fire departments and staff from peer facilities in the area to help ensure patients got needed medication and care
when residents would be able to return to the Ledges but he was optimistic that at least some would before the night’s end
we were able to minimize a lot of the water damage
The damage is not as bad as it could have been,” Stone said
“I’m hoping that we’re not going to have to keep everybody out of here
but I think there are going to be some people displaced overnight.”

The dance music legend turned Langley Park into a rave that you’ll be bragging to your kids about.
Fatboy Slim performing live (Source: Supplied)
More Fatboy Slim Fatboy Slim’s performance at Langley Park on March 14 was a reminder of why he remains a giant in the electronic music world. At 62, Norman Cook—better known as Fatboy Slim—hasn’t lost any of the energy or flair that made him a key figure in the rave and dance scenes.
His set was an effortless blend of nostalgia, new energy, and clever visuals, keeping the crowd engaged and dancing from start to finish.
Langley Park, an open space just outside the city, became the backdrop for an afternoon and evening that felt more like a festival than a typical DJ performance.
People began arriving early—by 4:30 pm—when DJs like Jennifer Loveless, CC: Disco, and DJ Seinfeld got the crowd warmed up with sets that set the tone for what was to come. By the time Fatboy Slim took to the decks just ahead of his scheduled 7:25 pm start time, the atmosphere was already electrically charged with excitement.
Fatboy Slim kicked off his performance with the opening theme to Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory—a surprisingly whimsical choice, but one that immediately sucked the audience in.
Don't miss a beat with our FREE daily newsletter
One of the things that stood out most was how seamlessly Fatboy Slim connected with his audience. The crowd at Langley Park wasn’t just a collection of the typical festivalgoers; it was a broad mix of people from all ages.
There was a sense of energy that didn’t seem to discriminate by age, and that’s a testament to Fatboy Slim’s ability to transcend generations. I noticed a woman in front of me, her high heels having given out mid-set, yet she kept dancing, undeterred. It felt like a perfect reflection of what Fatboy Slim’s music represents—something that brings people together, no matter the circumstances.
As the night went on, the crowd became more immersed in the experience, with many of Fatboy Slim’s biggest hits making an appearance: Right Here, Right Now, The Rockafeller Skank, Eat Sleep Rave Repeat, and Praise You.
Each track hit its mark, with the crowd responding enthusiastically to the classics that defined his career. The atmosphere was one of pure escapism, where people could just let go and lose themselves in the music. There was a sense of freedom in the air, as if everyone had temporarily left the world outside the venue behind.
But it wasn’t just about the music. Fatboy Slim’s performance also showcased how in tune he is with the times. The incorporation of both classic tracks and more recent selections showed that, while he’s very much part of dance music history, he’s not stuck in the past.
His ability to blend new and old was matched by his visual elements, which had a sense of cheekiness and wit. At one point, he flashed a photo of Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke on the screens, bowing theatrically before continuing the show. It was a playful moment that showed how relaxed Fatboy Slim is on stage, with just enough of a nod to his status as both a musical force and a cultural icon.
Langley Park itself became a microcosm of rave culture that night—where people from all walks of life came together and enjoyed the same thing.
Whether it was the seasoned ravers or the younger crowd, everyone seemed to be on the same wavelength, driven by the same collective rhythm. And while it might have been funny to see older generations really getting into the groove, there was something refreshing about it—Fatboy Slim’s music has a way of making people feel youthful, no matter how old they are.
Overall, Fatboy Slim’s performance at Langley Park was a reminder of why he’s such a legend in dance music. His ability to connect with the crowd, mix old favourites with newer material, and bring an energetic, no-holds-barred performance was as captivating as it was memorable.
As a 62-year-old who has been in the game for over 30 years, Fatboy Slim is a living testament to how great music can endure and evolve with time. He’s not just about keeping the past alive; he’s about making sure the future of electronic music remains just as exciting.

Government has distributed letters for 128 lots of lands to persons in two areas in the constituency of North Windward
The distribution of offer letters to the potential land owners took place at a ceremony on Friday
Montgomery Daniel described the occasion as “another historic moment for the constituents of North Windward.”
said there is no doubt in his mind that the lands which were given out
The area in Langley Park consists of nine acres of land which were previously used by the Ministry of Agriculture for operations relating to the banana industry
Daniel explained that there are 94 lots of land at Langley Park
The land is being sold to the new owners at $2 per square foot
and Minister Daniel estimated the cost of this to be $6 million
while a further $5 million is to be spent on the establishment of a sports facility in the area
“Development in our country has seen leaps and bounds,” under the Unity Labour Party (ULP) administration
also spoke at the ceremony delivering the feature address
and promised that the government will facilitate the installation of utilities
the prime minister said “it is only a government which is concerned about the welfare of the people can carry out exercises of this kind.”
“Never before in the history of St Vincent and the Grenadines have the poor and the marginalized received lands the way we have distributed them,” he stressed

the Township of Langley is hosting the annual Williams Park light drive-through light display in its entirety beginning Dec
Now called 'Holiday Lights in Williams Park,' the Township took over the annual display earlier this year from the volunteer-run Christmas in Williams Park Society.
The event remains free and will feature more than 150,000 lights and festive displays.
Donations will be collected for the Aldergrove Food Bank via credit or debit card during the event nights.
visitors can book ahead to experience the display via drive-through
a Township spokesperson told The Star in an unsigned email
To attend the light display, people interested must register in advance online at tol.ca/holidaylights.
Residents of the Langley Township can register starting Friday
Registration opens to non-residents the following Friday
Tickets will be booked in 30-minute increments
Only one person per vehicle needs to register.
the council voted to take over the event from the volunteer society that ran it for 33 years.
Council voted to spend $250,000 this year in startup and staffing costs to run the annual event
which lights up the rural park with Christmas decorations and inflatables for visitors during December every year
president of Christmas in Williams Park Society
had told Black Press Media at the time that the decision was a "complete ambush."
The society knew there would be a staff report coming forward at the May 13 meeting about the annual event
but Sharp said they had no advance warning that staff would be recommending the Township take over the event entirely
During the society’s discussions with Township staff earlier this year
ameliorating traffic back ups had been the major discussion point
The society was looking to put a ticketing system in place
along with other traffic control measures to deal with it
But council ultimately voted six to three for an option that includes spending $140,000 for new lights
plus $110,000 this year for operational costs
for an entirely Township-run version of the event
Last year the event almost wasn’t held when the Township considered withholding staff support
but that October the council voted unanimously to allocate $50,000 worth of staff time for the effort
Williams Park is located at 68 Avenue and 238 Street.
