LAPEER COUNTY, Mich. – Police are investigating in Lapeer County after sharp objects were found placed at a public playground
This is the second time it’s happened this month
according to information put out by the city
for the second time in less than two weeks
a citizen reported that several sharp man-made metal objects were found in the woodchips of the playground at Cramton Park,” a news release on behalf of the city stated
the objects can be best described as ‘caltrops’
The objects were found in the woodchips at the landing area of the slides
“My littlest one wanted to go on the slide
and I looked down to make sure there was nothing there,” parent Danielle Butler said
The city is asking parents to be extra vigilant and keep an eye out for these objects and any suspicious activity
“It’s obvious that whoever is doing this is trying to intentionally harm innocent people,” Local 4 Crime and Safety Expert Darnell Blackburn said
parents should be hypervigilant and searching again areas under slides
City officials said the parks are being checked every morning
I probably will be a little more hesitant,” parent Lyndzei Blankenburg said
Anyone with information about someone being in possession of these objects or with information about what’s been going on is asked to call Lapeer police.

Rhonda Laur brought a visual aid to last week's meeting of the library board in Lapeer
the one where the accomplished new director may or may not have quit and may or may not have been badgered into it
That was the same meeting where the three-member conservative majority on the supposedly nonpartisan board insisted they're not interested in banning books
even as they brushed aside the two members who've been a bulwark against the practice
"Gender Queer" is a piercing memoir in graphic novel form by Maia Kobabe
Along with a few utterly charming children's tales like "Fred Gets Dressed" and "Uncle Bobby's Wedding," it continues to be ground zero in Lapeer's culture wars
the root of endless discussions at library board and county commission meetings
The position of the Lapeer library and most every other is that parents should absolutely monitor what their children read — or watch on television
or absorb online — but should not decide what everyone else's children should have access to
So she took to the podium and told six or eight dozen people that no
“Gender Queer” was not lurking ominously in the children’s section of the main library
and it was parked in the adult biography section where it's always been
four books away from a lengthy recounting of the life of Henry Kissinger
she held aloft “ABC: An Amazing Alphabet Book,” by perhaps our best known children’s author
"Maia Kobabe’s autobiography is shelved with Dr
library director Danielle Brigati had vanished
Brigati has been on the job since late July
She replaced another respected director who moved on to less combustible pastures
The Lapeer County prosecutor had mused two years ago about charging the former director with a felony for keeping "Gender Queer" in circulation
then backtracked when the public made clear the idea was a few volumes short of an encyclopedia
the library board voted unanimously to trust the professionals on what books to stock
and parents on what their kids might find entertaining and valuable
That's the situation Brigati inherited when she left a similar job in Kerrville
where she was raised and where her father has been ailing
The seven library board members are appointed by the county commission or municipalities within the district
and three are now stocked by what appear to be political appointees in a generally conservative county
those three demoted board chair Bill Marquardt and left treasurer Perry Valle in place only because they didn't have anyone around to take his job
It was the first meeting as a member for the new secretary
though she had often appeared as a commenter outlining the books she opposed
The new chair and vice-chair did not respond to requests for a chat with the Free Press
because outright banning has been a losing cause in the courts
bury it out back and require a note from a parent taped to a shovel to dig it out a week from Thursday
The freedom of speech nonprofit PEN America says more than 4,000 unique titles were banned in various locales in 2023-24, among them the excellent "Nineteen Minutes" by bestselling author Jodi Picoult
and it's more likely to prevent the next one than inspire it — but it's No
RUBIN: In Traverse City, author Jodi Picoult shares her fight against book-banners
Evaluated in December when two more neutral trustees were still on the board
She has connected the library to ancestry.com for genealogical searches
joined a program that lets card-holders watch 10 movies per month for free
and erected storyboards of pages from children's books that encourage families to come in and borrow the rest of the adventure
But in a closed-door interlude during last week's meeting
came a drubbing about some of the books that librarians most value
because they comfort or inform people who desperately need to see themselves reflected on a page
Wrote and drew a 240-page book that includes three illustrations of nudity with sexual interaction — and as Laur wondered
what small child is going to pick up and wade through a book that long with big and unfamiliar words
Brigati "felt like she was being attacked," Marquardt said
'I'm not going to sit here and listen to this,' and she left."
she and her husband hit the road for Texas to pick up the rest of their belongings and haul them to the house they bought in Imlay City
But she won't be discarding books that matter

MSU Extension will bring communities together to share best practices for entrepreneurial support on May 29-30
Michigan will serve as the host community for the 2025 Connecting Entrepreneurial Communities (CEC) Conference through Michigan State University Extension
Register today!
The CEC program was created by MSU Extension in 2007 as a way to increase local community knowledge and support for entrepreneurship growth throughout Michigan
“We understood that to have maximum long-term impact on the Michigan economy
we needed to help communities embrace entrepreneurs,” said Dave Ivan
director of MSU Extension’s community
“We formed a ‘CEC Team’ made up of MSU Extension educators with business
community and entrepreneurship expertise and they created the award-winning CEC program and conference,” Ivan continued
This state-wide conference moves around the state annually to allow participants to experience a new community
CEC has a unique approach that embeds the conference in the local community. Twenty-two breakout sessions are held right in local businesses led by experienced entrepreneurs or leaders working in economic and community development. This allows participants to learn and, more importantly, see, feel, and taste what works in communities of many different sizes. (WNEM) – A man was seriously injured in a Lapeer County crash on Thursday
The Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office said at 9:29 a.m.
Lapeer Road (M-24) south of Millington Road in Mayville
a 26-year-old Lapeer woman was driving a 2008 Dodge Ram north on M-24 when the pickup lost stability and crossed over the centerline while sliding sideways
A 43-year-old Lapeer man was driving a 2003 Ford Ranger south on M-24 at the time
adding evidence shows he tried to evade the oncoming pickup by moving to the shoulder of the road
The sheriff’s office said the two vehicles collided on the shoulder
and the impact caused the Ford Ranger to roll
The driver was unresponsive and needed to be extracted from his vehicle by Mayville and Watertown Fire Departments
The 26-year-old suffered non-life-threatening injuries
but the sheriff’s office said light snow and winds that day may have played a role

Lansing — A 44-year-old man has pleaded no contest to murder charges in connection with a 2011 Lapeer homicide, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said Monday, although the lawyer for a second man who has been on house arrest since 2018 awaiting a new trial for the killing of Andrea Eilber said his client remains in limbo
Chadwick Mobley is scheduled to be sentenced in April on charges of first-degree murder
which carries an automatic life sentence in prison; felony murder; and felony firearm after entering the plea Monday in Lapeer County's 40th District Court
plea allows a defendant to accept punishment for a crime while not admitting guilt
“My thoughts are with the family and friends of Andrea Eilber and her community
as we announce this long-sought conviction in her senseless and horrendous murder,” Nessel said in a statement
“Today’s conviction was only possible for the tremendous cooperation and coordination of several law enforcement agencies."
More: Authorities arrest escaped man headed from Montana to face murder charges in Michigan
Detroit attorney Brian Leggio called on the attorney general to drop the charges against his client
who was arrested shortly after Eilber was killed
"The attorney general has caught and convicted the killer
who has admitted to the crime," Leggio said
There's no evidence my client was involved
so the attorney general needs to drop the charges
20-year-old Eilber was bound to a chair in the basement of her aunt and uncle's Mayfield Township home and shot once in the head
who was 19 years old at the time and had dated the victim
A jury found Grondin guilty of first-degree murder
and in 2016 he was sentenced to life in prison without parole
Grondin was released from prison in 2018 after his appeal was granted based on faulty language in the jury verdict form. Since his release, Grondin has since been on house arrest awaiting a new trial.
but he has to wear a tether and he's been on house arrest all this time," Leggio said of Grondin
The Attorney General's Office did not immediately reply to an email Monday asking whether the office planned to prosecute Grondin
The Monday press release said Mobley is scheduled to be sentenced April 15 by Lapeer County Circuit Court Judge Michael Nolan
adding: "Dates have yet to be set by the Court for the upcoming trial of a co-defendant previously charged for the same murder." The release did not mention Grondin by name
Michigan State Police in 2022 tested DNA that had been collected from a discarded cigarette butt left at the crime scene and traced it to Mobley
According to a previous statement by Leggio and co-defense attorney Dennis Clark
State Police knew as far back as 2012 that the DNA was not Grondin's
The state investigators never submitted the butt for genealogy testing until 2022 despite demands from the defense team
State Police detectives tracked down Mobley in Utah
which he used to deliver products to area Walmart stores
Police followed Mobley around trying to get a DNA sample from him
including securing a sample of his dog's feces after Mobley had collected it in a plastic bag and discarded it in a trash can
After detectives questioned Mobley about the murder
detectives found the pistol used in the 2011 murder
Mobley was arrested by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department in Libby, Montana, before being extradited to Michigan to face charges. While being transported
Mobley allegedly escaped from a Montana gas station before being rearrested
Nessel blamed the escape on the transport company
Mobley was bound over for trial in December 2023

– Officials in Lapeer County are reminding residents of the importance of smoke alarms following an apartment fire
Background: Fire at Lapeer apartment complex prompted third alarm response
smoke alarms in the unit where the fire started had been taken down and placed on a table with their batteries removed
Authorities said the fire was exacerbated by hoarding conditions in the originating apartment
the apartment’s occupants received no early warning of the fire
delaying their escape and allowing it to grow unchecked
The cause of the fire remains under investigation
More than half of Michigan’s fatal fires occur in residences without functioning smoke alarms. According to the National Fire Protection Association
having a functional smoke alarm reduces the risk of death in a fire by 54%
Experts recommend installing at least one smoke detector be installed per floor -- including the basement --and testing them every month
