Learn about the water lily and the larkspur
One emerges from deep beneath the water’s surface; the other grows as a single tall stalk from the ground
Both provide a pop of color during the early to midsummer months
Larkspurs are a symbol of positivity and dedication
given their height and beautiful purple-blue blooms
but beware: these plants are poisonous
The water lily represents purity and innocence while boosting aquatic ecosystems and serving as an inspiration for one of the world’s great painters
The larkspur is a member of the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae) and is native to parts of the Mediterranean
It grows wild in the United States and Europe and has become naturalized in gardens all over the world
The common name “larkspur” may refer to flowers of the genus Consolida
with Consolida often being considered a distinct group within the Delphinium genus
Larkspurs are believed to have gotten their name from their resemblance to the claw of the meadowlark
It has also been referred to as Lark’s Claw
which bloom in early summer before the heat sets in
Each flower has five petals and a spur in the center
Blooms come in single and double varieties
While it is beautiful and a welcome addition to any garden
the larkspur is highly poisonous to humans and animals if ingested
The larkspur has long symbolized positivity
and sincerity. It can also be used to describe lightheartedness and youth.
Each larkspur color holds a different meaning
which is hard to find in the world of flowers
means dignity and grace; pink symbolizes fickleness; white represents happiness and joy; and purple is a sign of first love
Larkspurs grow easily from seed and are very low maintenance
Seeds can be sown in the fall in warmer climates
while seeds should be sown in early spring in colder areas
The plant is ideal for cottage and wildflower gardens and will attract pollinators like hummingbirds and butterflies
it’s a great cut flower for floral arrangements
Water lilies are perennials in the Nymphaeaceae family
They come in two varieties: hardy and tropical.
They have two different blooming habits: day blooming
where flowers open mid-morning and close by late afternoon
where they open at dusk and close the next morning
which come in classic white and a rainbow of options
The interlocking petals fan out for a depth of beauty
The Amazon water lily grows lily pads up to 8 feet in diameter
producing large blooms that change from white to pink blossoms over the course of their bloom time
Water lilies are not only beautiful but also an important part of the ecosystem
The plants grow from rhizomes planted in muddy areas below the water surface
and their lilypad foliage provides shade to reduce algae growth
and filters the water in which they grow
Larger-sized plants can be grown in water gardens or ponds
while smaller ones grow well in containers
They do best in water that is stationary and warmed by the sun
Moving water caused by fountains or waterfalls can affect their performance
Pond Water Lilies are Beautiful~I'll decide which Water Lily to add to a small pond~: )
but I think you have a delphinium instead of larkspur (Consolida)

The Larkspur Planning Commission is scheduled to review plans tonight for the new library at 10 Rose Lane in Larkspur, Marin County. The proposed civic building will replace a vacant 2.4-acre parcel fairly close to the city center. Berkeley-based studio Noll & Tam Architects is responsible for the design
The newly-released details for the Larkspur Library show a long
narrow structure parallel to the surface parking lot
visitors can find community seating and bookshelves
a children’s seating and collection area
Four small study rooms will provide space for focused reading
while three meeting rooms on the far end of the floor will provide space for group functions
Larkspur Library on Rose Lane pedestrian view
The exterior will be clad with redwood siding
The inclusion of grey wood paneling and bold geometric shaping is evocative of the regional vernacular style
RHAA will oversee the landscape architecture
landscaping will reshape 0.85 acres of new planting area alongside 0.37 acres of untouched natural habitat
The library will span nearly 9,000 square feet of floor area
including 2,100 square feet of community space and 6,800 square feet for the library and associated infrastructure
Parking will be included for 32 cars with a surface parking lot
Plans for the library have been buoyed by $5.2 million in private fundraising organized by The Commons Foundation
The nonprofit organization was formed to support the construction of the modern library and associated landscaping
The site is located at the corner of Rose Lane and Doherty Drive
by a retail strip mall along with the Mount Tam Racquet Club on Magnolia Avenue
Much of the foot traffic entering the library is likely to come from the Hall Middle School campus located across Doherty Drive
The July article by Giuseppe Ricapito for the Marin Independent Journal reports that the library is expected to cost around $16 million
including the $5.2 million raised by The Commons Foundation
Construction is expected to start later this year
with the building opening as early as 2026
Alten Construction will be the general contractor
The Larkspur Planning Commission is scheduled to review the updated design for the proposed Library tonight, September 17th, starting at 7 PM. Public comment will be possible to submit via email before 4 PM today or in person at the Redwood High School Kreps Conference Room. Future residents will be across from the Niven public park and the waterfront trail along Corte Madera Creek
Demolition will be required for one 4,030-square-foot commercial structure
The estimated cost and timeline for construction have yet to be shared
A few years back I reviewed a pretty unique bike from Marin Bicycles, the Larkspur. Well, now they’ve added a new model with the Larkspur E
The new city/adventure bike is all dressed up with front and rear lights
The new Larkspur E still has the spirit of the original Larkspur “adventure/mixte”
but is now ready for some serious commuting
if you wanted to take the Larkspur E out on the fire roads around town
The Larkspur E is a fully capable bike on any terrain
The Larkspur E’s Bosch Active Line Plus drive unit gives a claimed range of 25-93 miles
The battery can be fully recharged in only 4 hours
The different assist modes are picked on the cleanly integrated display which sits next to the left grip
The “E” part of the Larkspur E uses the Bosch Smart System
The Larkspur E also sports a Shimano CUES drivetrain
which is designed to run specifically with center drive motors
Stopping power is delivered with Shimano hydraulic brakes and big 180mm rotors
It’s also equipped with a dropper post in case there is some gnar on the way home from grabbing groceries
it provides a way to comfortably stop at intersections and make getting on/off easier with a lower saddle

2024.Inside a split-level home in northeast Colorado Springs
6-year-old Eliot Hicks savored the last spoonfuls of his SpaghettiOs
his small feet swinging beneath the kitchen table
tending to a collection of plants that made their living space feel like a miniature jungle
vegetable seedlings were waiting for Colorado’s growing season to kick off
while a collection of houseplants sat in another corner.
The 37-year-old’s love of plants started small but has grown over time
filling his home and yard with foliage and flowers
“I'm definitely not as far down the rabbit hole as a lot of people
but I now have a dedicated space for plants,” Justin said with a smile that poked out of his reddish beard.
He pointed to a plant sitting on a ledge — a red maranta
which tilts its vibrant green and red striped leaves up and down depending on the time of day
This baby was Justin’s first success in the world of houseplants.
Motioning to another corner of the living room outfitted with bamboo-like shelves holding other houseplants
Justin’s eyes shone with pride as he talked about his collection
but his elephant ear alocasia — his “showpiece” — is one of his most prized plants
triangular leaves shot into the air in all directions
“At one point I didn't take care of her very well and she got very sick and I had to trim her down to one leaf and it came back to this,” Justin recalled.
“We’re getting another one!” he yelled with excitement
pointing out a new leaf growing from the plant
gardening is a cherished bond he shares with Eliot.
Each spring, the two make a trip to a biannual open house at Dutch Heritage Gardens in Larkspur
They hunt for perennials to add to their front yard and stock up on vegetable plants that will later be used in homemade salsas
“It's kind of this kickoff period to the summer where we get to go enjoy looking for new cool plants,” Justin said
Dutch Heritage Gardens grows plants for local plant shops and larger businesses like King Soopers in Colorado and across the Southwest
The massive commercial space sits about 20 minutes east of Monument and is surrounded by the rolling grasslands of Colorado’s plains.
Inside the greenhouse, plants stretch in all directions. Rows of colorful annual flowers — reds, whites, purples, pinks — sit on the greenhouse floor, many inside plastic nursery cups or container gardens. Overhead, baskets filled with plants hang from metal rods that make up a sophisticated irrigation system to prevent water runoff
a fog hides the back of the room as mist nourishes various houseplants
large green perennials sit in gallon-sized pots waiting for people to take them home
Aaron Van Wingerden has run the greenhouse with his wife
He is a third-generation grower and traces his roots to the Netherlands where his grandfather cultivated a passion for horticulture.
While the greenhouse is typically closed to the public
it opens its doors a couple of times a year
The open house tradition was born by accident
a grower ordered 50,000 poinsettias ahead of Thanksgiving
but when the holiday rolled around and it came time to ship plants
the grower only committed to half the order
The greenhouse had to find a home for those extra plants
so they invited the public to pick poinsettias fresh off their floor — at wholesale cost
which is far less than what the plants would be in stores
“Eighty people showed up,” Van Wingerden said with a laugh
News of the open house spread by word of mouth
Van Wingerden said now roughly 15,000 people come to the greenhouse during open house weekends
generating about 10 percent of Dutch Heritage’s yearly income.
it's just huge and it's such a great benefit to those who can't buy the expensive plants,” said Karinna Schifferdecker
who waited in the checkout line with a large metal cart filled with houseplants during a recent open house
One of those plants was a magical Thai constellation monstera
The plant is variegated with white speckles throughout its big holey green leaves
the houseplant was considered a collector’s item
(it’s) like $300 for this plant and it's $125 today,” Schifferdecker said with bright eyes
They learned about the sale through a local Facebook group called the Colorado Springs Plant Hoes
which meets for regular plant swaps and potlucks
and raises money for charitable causes.
That Facebook group was started by Phung Chau-Fisher
a plant enthusiast in the Colorado Springs area whose love of plants began during the pandemic
hobby since then that has been super fun.”
Chau-Fisher has decorated her home with beautiful and happy houseplants
mostly varieties of her favorite: the monstera
But her most-loved plant kid is a philodendron whose leaves extend out a foot in each direction with galaxy-like spirals of lime and deep green
her houseplants aren’t just a gardening project
they’re an opportunity to foster community in different seasons of life
“I personally have met some of my best friends from the Plant Hoes group and as an adult
it's hard to make friends when you're older
So I hope that other people are kind of finding their people
over a shared love of houseplants,” she said
“I just feel like it's a safe space for introverts
especially to get together and meet people like them,” she continued
”That's what it's been for me and it's been amazing.”
The community of plant lovers makes Dutch Heritage’s open house special
Van Wingerden said he has seen the same groups of people line up outside the greenhouse in the early morning to have breakfast and coffee together before the sale starts
He has also seen people of all ages and with varying plant knowledge come through the greenhouse during the open houses.
Van Wingerden's love of plants has been a family affair that started when he was a kid.
“I actually grew up working for my dad as a grower in our greenhouse in Pennsylvania and just fell in love with it at a very early age and decided that this is what I wanted to do with my life,” he said.
his wife and kids work alongside him in his greenhouse
For Justin and Eliot Hicks in Colorado Springs
growing plants together lets them nurture their relationship too
The father and son look forward to sharing each year’s growing season
Eliot pointed out a squid-shaped pot holding a carnivorous plant
He explained the plant eats the flies that pester their peppermint.
“I like plants and they're kind of my thing and I love them being in my house,” he said
his mouth still red from his SpaghettiO dinner
but they look very beautiful and I love our plants.”
The next open house at Dutch Heritage Gardens will likely be held this fall. Visit their website for dates and more information

How should we decide what happens to our bodies when we die
And what implications does that decision have for the living
It’s common to think a burial at a cemetery is the final resting place for a loved one. But as we heard in our last episode
sometimes the need to progress as a society is in direct conflict with the desire to honor the dead
Today, we talk to one of the leaders of the Green Burial Council
His organization advocates and sets standards for “natural” burials
which he calls “the full body burial of the person directly in the ground with only biodegradable materials.”
We talk about the practicality of natural burial in Chicago and the very personal and spiritual decisions that add complexity to this corner of the death care industry

It’s never been in Larkspur & Hawk designer Emily Satloff’s nature to take the road traveled
While drawing obvious historical inspirations in her jewelry designs
her interpretations strike a healthy balance between the old (using a foil-backed jewelry technique popularized in the 18th century) and new (experimenting with never-before-used materials for backing such as lace and woven ribbon)
This fall and holiday season is no different as Satloff deepens her exploration of pairing ribbons and unique stone cuts for distinctive combinations of hues and
Incorporating ribbons into her jewelry—a technique she introduced just a year ago—has quickly become a signature of the brand
This ribbon-lined approach is a modern innovation
setting her apart in the world of fine jewelry
Satloff’s use of ribbons breathes contemporary life into vintage-inspired pieces
possibly marking the evolution of the foiling technique for which Larkspur & Hawk is renowned
Satloff uses embroidered textiles and ribbons
creating this new collection has been very cathartic for me because I get to step into my role as a researcher and use my knowledge of the history of decorative arts to select the ribbons
and it does not end there,” Satloff said in a statement
I have awarded myself the opportunity to physically have a hand in the collection with the ribbon curation
before I personally cut and lay each piece into the settings
It’s a bit more tactile for me than some of our other capsules
the new pieces will be available this fall through the holiday season

Twelve Hereford heifers were infused with larkspur extract (group 1
After 3 weeks of being fed basal ration (meadow grass hay)
all heifers were offered a ration of alfalfa pellets (3,400 g) in a 2-phase
the amount eaten within 45 minutes was measured by weigh-back of uneaten pellets
cattle that ate > 150 g of pellets in phase 1 were offered the balance of uneaten pellets and were infused with their respective designated solution
Five pairings of pellet feedings and appropriate infusions were given at 2- or 3-day intervals to initially induce feed aversion
Heifers in groups 1 and 2 developed a strong aversion to pellets by the 5th feeding
Persistence of aversion was tested twice at weekly intervals
Infusion of cattle with larkspur extract or lithium chloride solution induced a persistent aversion to an otherwise palatable feed

The twin-engine aircraft crash happened around 8 a.m
Several lanes of I-25 northbound were closed Sunday morning as authorities from multiple departments responded to the crash.
Rescue personnel waded through waist-deep water to reach the parties
who had exited the plane wreckage by the time they arrived
Both people were transported to a local hospital with unspecified injuries.
Some authorities have remained at the scene to clean up a fuel leak from the site of the wreckage. The Colorado Department of Transportation reports that two northbound lanes in the area are closed as of 11:00 a.m.
The Federal Aviation Administration has been notified and will handle the investigation
DENVER — The National Transportation Safety Board released on Wednesday its preliminary report into what caused a twin-engine airplane to crash near Larkspur last month
The agency said a training exercise in which the left engine was shut down to practice emergency procedures likely led to the crash on June 16
attempted to land the Tecnam P2006T airplane on Interstate 25
but the left wing struck a road sign during the landing
causing the aircraft to impact a swampy area
Rescue crews were able to recover two injured people who were taken to a hospital with unknown extent of injuries
according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office
Dashcam video shared with Denver7 shows when the plane attempted to land on the interstate before crashing
The NTSB said online videos of the accident flight showed the airplane descended over I-25 with the right propeller rotating and the left propeller not rotating
Multiple avionics devices were removed and sent to the NTSB for data extraction
The agency said the airplane was retained for further examination

Pieces of the front end of the woman’s car were found near a bent street sign at Prospect and Walnut streets
A Larkspur woman was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence with a suspended license after she was allegedly seen swerving behind the wheel and remnants of her car were found next to a bent street sign
March 2 reporting that a car was seen swerving with “moderate front-end vehicle damage,” the department said in a Wednesday notice
Officers from the Petaluma Police Department located the car and made a traffic stop in the area of Kent and Walnut streets and began a field sobriety test on the driver
65-year-old Karen McFall Murray of Larkspur
An “evidentiary breath test” revealed that McFall Murray “had a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .28% ‒ more than three times the legal limit,” police said
She was subsequently arrested and transported to Sonoma County jail on suspicion of driving with a suspended license
and driving with a blood alcohol content over .08%
As of Wednesday McFall Murray was no longer booked in jail
“Another officer reported seeing a bent street sign at Prospect (and Walnut streets) with plastic remnants on the ground that appeared to match McFall Murray’s vehicle,” police said
adding that the suspect later confirmed those pieces belonged to her car
Sonoma County court records show that charges against the driver were enhanced to a felony level due to this being her fourth DUI
Police remind and encourage the community to plan ahead if they will be drinking

brilliant blooms of larkspur color the landscape across the northern hemisphere
As the traditional July month birth flower
but it also has surprisingly rich folklore and symbolism that make it meaningful and far more than just a pretty flower
Along with the alternative July birth flower
these two blooms bring great color and culture to the midsummer month
Jump to larkspur meaning
Larkspur is the common name of delphinium, more than 300 species of plants in the family Ranunculaceae
including some species of the genus Consolida
These highly toxic plants are related to ranunculus
These flowers are native to the northern hemisphere and different varieties are found in Europe
and forests where conditions are right for these blooms to flourish
While a typical larkspur plant may only live 2-3 years
they do readily reseed and will continue to grow in the same area as new plants bloom
The common name larkspur was given to these flowers as the distinct flower structure resembles the claws of the widespread meadowlark
alternative names are “bird’s claw” “lark’s heel” and “lark’s claw.” “Knight’s spur” is another
The name delphinium came from the ancient Greek word delphinion or “dolphin” in reference to the shape of the flowers that can resemble a jumping dolphin or the head of a dolphin with its unique snout
Larkspur has upright growth with each stem supporting a profusion of palmate blooms for a striking show of color and texture
and hummingbirds love this nectar-rich flower
the brown or copper-colored seeds add even more interest to the landscape
Related Product: July Birthstone – Onyx Necklace
These flowers come in a wide spectrum of colors
While not every color has a specific meaning
some shades do have associations with specific emotions
Purple larkspur is associated with one’s first love
but pink hues indicate fickleness or an unsettled quality
larkspur can have a wide range of meanings – love
This makes delphinium a versatile flower in floriography
Of special note is the idea that larkspur is associated with lightness of spirit
a nostalgic feeling in July as school is out for summer
and it is a time for youthful adventures – trips to the beach
In addition to being the official July birth month flower
larkspur is also associated with the Zodiac sign Cancer
The flower is also sometimes symbolic of the eighteenth wedding anniversary
which while that anniversary has no official flower
is connected to the color blue – and larkspurs come in beautiful shades of blue
With the widespread geographical distribution of these flowers
it is no surprise that larkspur has origin myths
believe the flower originated from the tragic suicide of the hero Ajax
and larkspur sprang from drops of his blood
The flowers would forever tell of his anguish
as their petals formed his initials – AIA (about as well as they form a dolphin head
attribute the formation of larkspur to the sea god Neptune
who transformed an endangered dolphin into the flower to protect it
which gave the bloom its characteristic shape
In China, larkspur is believed to be a lucky flower, particularly associated with the Year of the Dragon and the Dragon sign of the Chinese zodiac
or displaying these flowers is especially popular during the lunar new year of Dragon years (i.e
July is also a lucky birth month for Dragons
just when this July birth flower is most popular
The Pawnee tribe of North America and other Native American peoples have different legends surrounding larkspur
When Dream Woman – sometimes described as a goddess
or a celestial being – broke open a hole in the sky to look down on humans
bits of the sky fell to earth and became larkspur flowers
larkspur is believed to have protective powers and was often planted around stables to ward off the attention of witches
sprinkling larkspur in one’s bathwater is said to offer protection from ghosts and magical spells
Italian folklore believes larkspur originated after three brave warriors slew a dragon and wiped their blades on the grass to clean off its blood
The blue blood of the dragon gave these flowers their bold color
while the venom of the dragon contributed to larkspur’s toxicity
It is no surprise that a flower as widespread and recognizable as the rose has been used for many symbolic purposes
The rose is featured in some way on dozens of coats of arms
the rose is the official state flower of Iowa
as well as the official provincial flower of Alberta
Return to Top
The Italian superstitions associated with larkspur and the venom of the dragon are well-founded, as these flowers are filled with highly poisonous diterpene alkaloids. In fact, every part of the delphinium plant – stem, roots, leaves, flowers, and seeds – is toxic. Younger plants are the most toxic, but even mature plants are poisonous to humans, cats, dogs, and other wildlife
In some cases where larkspur is on pasture land
it has been known to cause fatalities in cattle if they consume enough
Depending on how much larkspur is ingested
symptoms of its toxicity can range from vomiting
and a burning sensation can result from handling the plants
and it is always advisable to wear gloves when working with delphinium.
despite the plant’s well-known toxic qualities
larkspur has still been used for medicinal purposes
that none of these uses are scientifically proven to have any true medical value
Where larkspur can be beneficial is in aromatherapy
often described as “fresh” or “clean” rather than having any recognizable components
This does make larkspur useful for lotions
and it can help relieve stress and anxiety without an overwhelming aroma
Delphinium is relatively easy to grow but needs the proper conditions to thrive
Full sun exposure will help these flowers reach their full potential with glorious growth and bold color
but afternoon shade is best in hotter areas where the plants might scorch
they are often planted in the center of flowerbeds or used to add height to the rear of beds
and are a favorite in cottage garden designs to create a lovely tiered effect with other blooms
not to plant larkspur in windy spots or else the tall plants might droop or be blown over
Staking and providing support for taller varieties – and some grow as tall as 7 feet
Opting for dwarf varieties can bring the beauty of larkspur to the landscape without needing staking or support
this flower should not be planted where it will be easily accessed by children
it can be a good border around garden areas to help keep unwanted guests away from preferred plantings
Consult with local garden centers when choosing larkspur varieties
as some are considered invasive and may be less desirable in the yard
Larkspur is susceptible to various diseases including powdery mildew
Watering the flowers at the base or using a drip or soaker system will help minimize these difficulties
Deadheading will also minimize damage and encourage reblooming so larkspur can be enjoyed throughout the growing season
Just take care to wear gloves to avoid any skin irritation
if larkspur will be used in cut arrangements – they are lovely
after all – take care that the vase is not in reach of curious children or pets
as even after cutting these plants are still toxic
While larkspur can be a beautiful addition to the landscape
its high toxicity and occasionally invasive nature might not be suitable for everyone
and various types of lilies can offer a suggestion of larkspur without its dangers
An alternative to larkspur that has the same symbolism as the symbolic July birth flower is the water lily, the month’s secondary birth flower. From the family Nymphaeaceae
there are approximately 70 water lily species
These aquatic flowers are rooted in the rich
while the stems grow vertically and the large
flat round leaves and beautiful blooms float on the surface or extend just above it
The water lily family is named after the Greek nymphs
and both the blooms and the mythological figures have been featured in poetry and artwork
Water lilies are associated with the Zodiac sign Pisces (February 19 through March 20) as a water sign
and are heralded in Buddhism and Hinduism as symbolic of resurrection and spiritual enlightenment
water lilies are sacred to the goddess Isis and symbolize the sun
The ancient Mayans, however, had a different use for water lilies. While still revered as sacred, the flowers were also a practical means to test water filtration systems
Unlike larkspur with its prodigious blooms
water lilies are solitary flowers but still have a range of colors from classic white and cream to yellow
This versatility makes them easy to use for a wide variety of meanings and nuances to celebrate birthdays and any special occasion in July or other summer months
Today, the water lily is the national flower of Guyana
and many beautiful botanical gardens feature stunning water lilies
They can be a lovely ornamental addition to a backyard pond
or may even be part of a container pond for a surprise bloom
and understanding more about them can help you enjoy the richness either one can bring to the midsummer landscape
Which July birth month flower do you prefer: larkspur
