(WFSB) - After a 6 week long investigation
Groton police have made an arrest in a case that had rumors of a serial killer swirling on social media
Groton police identified the victim found near the entrance of the Colonel Ledyard Cemetery as 58-year-old Suzanne Wormser
The suspect was identified as 68-year-old Donald Coffel
Neighbors say they knew there was an issue when they hadn’t seen Wormser for a while
So when I stopped seeing her around the community
I just knew something was wrong,” said Stephanie Oceane
Oceane lives just a few doors down from where police believe her neighbor was brutally murdered
Chief David Burton said the breakthrough in the case came from a tip-line phone call that helped them identify Wormser
Another tip led police to the Allen Street home just down the block
“He told police that she had vacated the apartment already and was no longer here
but I knew that something was wrong because she was a widow and wasn’t going anywhere
and it didn’t seem like something she’d do,” Oceane said
Oceane says she was one of those tip line calls
She was so concerned she began taking notes detailing what she knew
Chief Burton says they believe the home is where the murder took place before Coffel tried to get rid of Wormser’s body
Police say after interviewing Coffel for a third time he finally confessed
“The suspect was interviewed for a third time
Providing details that matched the scene documentation as well as evidence collected by the investigation,” Chief Burton said
Police have not said how Wormser was murdered or what led up to the crime
A memorial gathered Friday evening to remember Wormser who was a well-known member of the community
Her neighbors left flowers and candles in her memory
“There’s been weird energy the past couple of months
and it’s just going to give everyone some closure,” Oceane said
Yet members of the community are still shaken after learning about the murder
I was super repulsed because you just never know who’s living in your community,” said Oceane
The mayor discussed the rumors on social media that surrounded this investigation
“During the course of the police department’s investigation there have been many rumors and unsubstantiated fear mongering taking place on social media making the city and surrounding communities seem like unsafe places to live,” Mayor Keith Hedrick said
Coffel has been arrested and is being held on a $1,000,000 bond
