The top three NWSL teams of the Orlando Pride
and Kansas City Current all lost their games this weekend in surprising upsets
there was plenty of discussion about the possible loss of parity in the NWSL
with the top four teams of the Orlando Pride
and Gotham FC seemingly pulling away from the rest of the league
While it briefly looked like this could still be the case this season
this past weekend brought some shocking upsets
and proof that the league remains as chaotic as ever
None of the top four teams won this weekend
and this weekend showed that anything can happen
First, on Friday, the Washington Spirit lost 3-4 to Angel City in a high scoring, nail-biting game. Defender Esme Morgan scored two goals, while Angel City was bolstered by young players Gisele Thompson and Riley Tiernan. Angel City also saw the benefit of their dynamic sister duo, with Gisele and sister Alyssa Thompson combining for a goal
This was the Spirit’s second loss in a row
after falling 3-0 at home to Gotham the previous weekend
Then, Kansas City continued to show that the top teams are not infallible, losing 1-0 to the Seattle Reign thanks to a goal from Lynn Biyendolo
The Current was not able to start star Temwa Chawinga
who was listed as questionable on the availability report with a hip injury and only came in at the 62nd minute
the Kansas City Current lost the week prior to the North Carolina Courage
the Current hadn’t lost a game this season
typical NWSL chaos meant that the Courage equalized in the 90th minute and went ahead in stoppage time to bring home the season’s first victory
the Orlando Pride lost 1-0 to the Portland Thorns
with the Thorns looking reinvigorated at Providence Park in front of fans
The Thorns outplayed the Pride and managed 15 total shots to the Pride’s 11
“Disappointed with the result of course,” said Pride coach Seb Hines
“When you give Portland an opportunity to take the lead it is very difficult to get back into the game
but it wasn’t enough to get anything out of the game.”
another team considered to be one of the league’s frontrunners
also wasn’t able to pull off a win this weekend
They tied the Chicago Stars with a 0-0 draw
who recently fired their head coach Lorne Donaldson
have otherwise been struggling at the bottom of the table with five losses
When asked about the the upsets this weekend and their impact on parity
and things are decided in the last minutes.”
with the 8 teams in playoff spots ranging from 10 to 15 points
and could very well continue to stay at the top
and even the Stars are showing the league that they aren’t to be counted out
The best lesson to take away from this weekend

Longtime Washington Spirit goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury found herself in a very unfamiliar place on Friday night: watching a NWSL game from the bench
Kingsbury was dropped for the Spirit's 4-3 league defeat against Angel City FC
with Sandy MacIver handed the start in her place
It was a rollercoaster affair at Audi Field
with the Spirit coming from 2-0 down to equalize and then again after they went down 3-2
With the match looking set to end in a 3-3 draw
Riley Tiernan scored with nearly the last kick to give Angel City all three points
Spirit assistant coach Adrián González confirmed that Kingsbury was not injured
"That's a decision that we've taken as a coaching staff
because Sandy was doing a really good job in training sessions," González said
we want to keep them involved and be ready to help us."
González did not say whether he expected the change to last for more than one game
but it was still a surprise move after Kingsbury started the Spirit's last 42 matches across the regular season and playoffs
Kingsbury has been the Spirit's starter in goal since joining the club prior to the 2018 season
The Ohio native has twice been named the NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year
The 33-year-old has earned two caps with the U.S
MacIver joined the Spirit in the offseason after spending two and a half seasons with Manchester City
The 26-year-old tore her ACL while on international duty with Scotland in April 2024
making Friday's start her first game action in more than a year

The Washington Spirit spent the start of the match fully utilizing its five-back
After a few promising Spirit breakaways created some chances up top
Angel City returned with a shot of their own
An Alyssa Thompson cross led to a Riley Tiernan goal
giving the visitors a 1-0 lead on Washington
the Spirit spent time defending its final third while Angel City took advantage of the momentum
with Alyssa assisting the younger Gisele for the 2-0 lead
Down 2-0 and not wanting a repeat of last week, the Spirit turned up its attack. Catching Angel City on its back foot, Gabby Carle lofted the ball over a crowd to Ashley Hatch who headed it to Morgan
With one precise touch Morgan found the left corner of the net bringing the Spirit back in the game
The eruption of Audi Field and determination to get back in the game fueled Washington to battle back against Angel City’s relentless attacks. Ten minutes later, Rosemonde Kouassi found Gift Monday who also only needed one touch to sneak the ball past the Angel City keeper and level the score at 2
This was Monday’s second goal of the NWSL season and Kouassi’s first assist of the season
and proved to be a dangerous force against the Angel City defense
The rollercoaster of a first half ended in a tie
the first time the Spirit entered halftime 2-2 since July 6
Both teams came out blazing in the second half fighting to get ahead
punching the ball over the net and saving the Spirit from the threat of an Angel City free kick and a subsequent curving corner kick
On for Kouassi, Croix Bethune made her presence known by ripping a shot within her first minute of action
Angel City overcame the tie with a quick build and goal in the 72nd minute
A narrowly-avoided fourth goal for Angel City was initially blocked by Maclver
then rebounded and blocked again by a sliding Morgan
shot after blocked shot bounced around until Morgan got her toe on the ball and poked it into the corner of the net to level the match 3-3
This is the first time the Washington Spirit has scored three goals in a match since October 13
Angel City did just that after the club converted a corner into a goal in the eighth minute of second half stoppage time
solidifying its lead in the final minutes and taking the 4-3 decision

Gisele Thompson's first NWSL goal was assisted by the most fitting person imaginable: her older sister Alyssa
The Angel City pair became the first sisters to combine for a goal in NWSL history
combining for their team's second in a wild 4-3 win against the Washington Spirit on Friday night
With Angel City already up a goal at Audi Field
Alanna Kennedy found Alyssa Thompson with a pinpoint long ball
The winger drove in a left-footed cross that her younger sister flicked home with an audacious aerial effort
The Spirit struck back with two goals before halftime
but Gisele would then deliver an assist in the 72nd minute for Katie Zelem
Esme Morgan looked to have given the Spirit a dramatic late draw with her second goal of the night in the 89th minute
but Angel City stunned the home side in the 98th minute as Riley Tiernan completed a brace of her own to give her side the win
"I'm so happy we got the win and the sister-to-sister goal," Gisele said after the game

Friday's goal came in her 22nd appearance in the NWSL
The goal at Audi Field wasn't the first major accomplishment for the Thompsons this year. In February, they became just the second pair of sisters to start a U.S. women's national team game together
Friday's assist continued a red-hot start to the season that has seen her tally three goals and two assists in her first six league matches
LEESBURG — A Eustis bicycle rider died in an accident on County Road 473 late afternoon Sunday
The 69-year-old cyclist was riding along the northbound outside shoulder of County Road 473 near the Fountain Lake subdivision and "swerved in the direct path of the Toyota truck" that was traveling southbound
according to a Florida Highway Patrol news release
was not hospitalized and the crash remains under investigation
"All motorists should use extra caution when driving around bicyclists, motorcyclists and commercial motor vehicles," the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles tells us on its website
reminding us that we need to share the road
"Drivers must give bicyclists a minimum of three feet of clearance when driving alongside or passing them — it's the law ," the FHMSV says
And since May is National Bicycle Safety Month
bike riders need to note the safety recommendations of national safety organizations
"You should ride your bike with traffic, not against it," reports Road Bike Basics. "Your body is designed to take a greater impact from behind," the article explains
Though some bicyclists feel safer riding against the flow of traffic
The Florida Bicycle Association reports on its website: "Drivers are less likely to anticipate a cyclist approaching from the opposite direction when leaving or entering cross-streets or driveways
The association has jointly published a bike safety guide with several partners, accessible at floridabicycle.org
Whether explicitly stated in a statute or not
riding against the flow of traffic is illegal in all states
Because bike riders must follow the road rules intended for all drivers
an officer can ticket a bike rider for riding against the flow of traffic
just as a driver would be in deep trouble if driving the wrong way
a bicyclist must obey all traffic controls and signals in Florida: "Do not ride a bicycle under the influence of alcohol or drugs
Stay alert — do not text while biking or wear headphones or earbuds so you can hear everything around you
and a bicyclist riding on sidewalks or in crosswalks must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians and must give an audible signal when passing."
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also recommends riding with the flow of traffic. That and offers tips can be found at nhtsa.gov/road-safety/bicycle-safety

Officers from the LPD originally spoke with the victim
who entered their lobby to report being continuously battered by Felix-Marcano
the victim disclosed additional abuse by Felix-Marcano

An Apopka woman was arrested on drug charges when officers found marijuana throughout her vehicle after she left a known narcotics residence
An officer surveilling a known narcotics residence near 12th and West Main Streets observed a gray vehicle with the driver’s side door open at around 12:55 a.m
There were multiple individuals standing around it before the driver
later identified as 34-year-old Amy Marie Dinkins
The officer followed the vehicle and continued to watch its movements
The vehicle then entered the Circle K parking lot
where another officer saw a woman and a man get into the vehicle
The other officer watched Dinkins run a stop sign at the intersection of South Street and West Dixie Avenue
Despite the officer’s lights and siren being activated
the vehicle continued to “slow roll” for about a block before eventually coming to a complete stop near Rogers Park
officers on scene drew their firearms and initiated felony stop procedures
Dinkins and the passenger were ordered to exit the vehicle
An officer approached Dinkins while a K-9 unit came to the scene to assist
The K-9 sniffed around the outside of the vehicle and positively alerted to the odor of narcotics

Further inspection revealed another clear bag behind the driver’s seat and a clear container
The total weight of the marijuana was 6 grams
Dispatch informed the officers that Dinkins had active warrants from Lake and Orange Counties
Her license had been cancelled since April 1
While the passenger was released from the scene
Dinkins was arrested on charges of possession of marijuana (less than 20 grams)
drug paraphernalia (possess or use) and driving while license suspended/revoked (with knowledge)
She was transported to Lake County Jail and released after posting $5,000 bond
A debate over rampant growth raged for more than three hours Monday night before Leesburg commissioners in a special meeting at Venetian Gardens
District 3 Commissioner Jay Connell had proposed a moratorium on future annexations and developments until Jan
His resolution would not be applied to existing developments and would not stop the issuance of building or occupancy permits
It would have no impact on residential or commercial buildings on the more than 16,281 lots already approved by the city
More than a thousand area residents signed petitions in support of the resolution
the meeting was moved from City Hall to the Venetian Center where more than 100 residents were in attendance
City Manager Al Minner recommended the rejection of Connell’s resolution
Minner presented information on the economic benefits of development to the city
He explained that the city has been proactive in developing infrastructure needed to support growth
When Mayor Alan Reisman opened the microphone for public comment
more than 30 people lined up at the podium
CEO of one of Leesburg’s largest employers
questioned how the city could consider slowing the local economy when nearly $2 trillion has been lost due to trade wars shaking up the global economy
the message to the business community is you’re closed for business,” he said
He urged the commission to hold meetings involving the city
Other business owners and associations also told the commissioners that Connell’s proposal would hurt the economic health of Leesburg
Sandi Moore of the Leesburg Chamber of Commerce told the commission that the suspension of growth would put Leesburg at a disadvantage when employers compared it to other local communities
Local resident Mario Nappa, who has often addressed traffic concerns
“I think we have unbridled growth affecting the quality of life of the existing residents of this city,” Nappa said
“We need a moratorium just so that the infrastructure can keep up
Because the traffic is just becoming unbearable.”
Lake County Commission Chair Leslie Campione urged the commissioners to respect the Lake County future land use maps when considering annexations
She pointed out that 16,000 acres have been annexed into cities in the county and that Leesburg has annexed over 4,568 acres
Many of those acres included property which had been designated as rural protected areas
She also indicated that the county does not have the funds available for major capital improvements
Connell told the commissioners that a “yes” vote would be for the residents and a “no” vote would be for big business
while expressing the need for improving the roads
Commissioner Mike Pederson suggested that impact fees and even taxes be increased to address the road deficiencies
The resolution failed 4-1 with only Connell voting for it

A man was arrested for trespassing after being found in a vacant house with a narcotic pipe next to him on a bed
An officer conducted a secure check of a vacant residence
he found 39-year-old Robert Bowen Rohrbaugh sitting on a bed inside the residence
The officer was familiar with Rohrbaugh from prior contacts with him and knew his information
An inquiry showed he was previously trespassed from the property on Nov
the officer observed a clear glass bubble-style pipe sitting directly where Rohrbaugh was on the bed
It was in an area that he had access to and was within reaching distance
The officer did not observe another subject in the room with him at the time of discovering it
The pipe had an unknown clear residue in the stem and a burnt unknown black substance in the bubble of the pipe
It later tested positive for methamphetamine
Rohrbaugh was subsequently arrested on charges of drug paraphernalia (possess or use) and trespass after warning
He was transported to Lake County Jail with bond set at $2,000
The Georgia native was also one of three arrested in March for trespassing at a produce market in Leesburg
A Deland woman who was arrested for attacking her ex-boyfriend’s female friend received more charges for violently resisting officers
An officer responded to Justin’s Recycling
regarding 36-year-old Tasha Joe Perry acting “out of control” at 11 a.m
She was throwing glass and computers at customers and staff
another officer was already speaking with the female victim outside the entrance
The victim stated she previously brought a computer to the location to be fixed and returned this day to pick it up
The owner was outside smoking a cigarette when she got there
The victim and owner began talking since they were long-time friends
when suddenly the owner’s recent ex-girlfriend
She got out of the vehicle she came in and quickly approached the victim
“You must be one of his little maid whores.”
The victim replied that she did not work for Justin’s Recycling but rather ran her own restaurant
Perry told the victim to shut up before she did something
Perry then began striking the victim with a closed fist in the area of her face
The victim defended herself and received several scratches on her chest near her left and right collarbone and the left side of her neck
and she had blood on her clothes from the blood dripping off her thumb
The injury was caused by a glued-on fake nail being pried off during the altercation
The store owner separated the victim and Perry by physically putting himself in the middle and helping the victim inside the business
Perry was able to get inside and continued to berate the victim
The store owner once again separated the two by holding Perry and escorting her to a back room
Perry was handcuffed near the entry doors of the business
and the officers began escorting her to a patrol vehicle
Once they were off the sidewalk and in the parking lot
she started shouting at the victim who was sitting in her vehicle
Perry turned and attempted to walk toward her
while shouting that she was going to harm her
An officer gave Perry numerous verbal commands to walk
to leave the victim alone and walk to the patrol vehicle
She had to be forcefully redirected toward the patrol vehicle
sat on the ground and would not stand up on her own
saying they were going to earn their money that day
The officers had to physically lift Perry from the ground and carry her toward the patrol vehicle
she violently thrusted herself and bumped into an officer
causing him to fall to the ground and lose his grip on her
Once the officer stood from the ground and regained control of Perry
they continued to escort her to the patrol vehicle
She was placed inside on the rear passenger side
The officer got into his patrol vehicle and began to drive to the LPD for the booking process but had to stop due to Perry kicking the rear passenger door
He then grabbed the handcuffs that were placed on Perry to stop her from kicking my door
she continually attempted to “jerk” them out of his grip and get out of the vehicle using the passenger side while he was telling her to be still
The other officer opened the rear passenger door and placed leg shackles on Perry
this time straight to the Lake County Jail for the direct booking process
due to Perry having undone the seatbelt and laid on her back in the seat
She was once again kicking the rear passenger door window area
Perry was taken out of the vehicle and put on the ground to be secured in a hobble
She was next out back in the patrol vehicle where she became extremely combative toward law enforcement
While trying to place the seatbelt on Perry
she was able to get it into her mouth and bit down
She was given multiple commands to release the seatbelt but refused
Once the officers got the seatbelt free of her bite
she moved her head forward toward one of them
An officer grabbed Perry’s shoulders in order to control her and commanded her not to bite him while he was trying to place the seatbelt around her
Perry stated she was going to bite him and continued to pull herself toward him
An officer successfully pulled Perry away to a full seated position
making placing the seatbelt on her nearly impossibly
She also continually tried to bite the seatbelt as an officer was trying to place it around her to reach the buckle
