Leland Pierce earned the enviable title of 2025 HKN Professor of the Year for ECE after a vote by all ECE students
The voting was overseen by the Beta-Epsilon chapter of Eta Kappa Nu (HKN)
the national honor society for electrical and computer engineers.
Pierce joined the department in 1991 as an Assistant Research Scientist after receiving his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Electrical Engineering from Michigan. He began teaching courses in 2016, and in recent years has become a primary instructor for EECS 200: Electrical Engineering Systems Design I.
EECS 200 is a new core course that was first introduced into the electrical engineering curriculum in 2019
and was one of the first two faculty to teach the course
which turned out to be the semester before COVID struck
To ensure the students were able to get as realistic a lab experience as possible while at home, he spent the summer of 2020 developing software to mimic the lab setup
students made clicks in a browser to grab wires
His concern for how students learn has always been forefront in his mind
so this award is particularly meaningful to him
“Winning this award means that the effort I’ve made to modify how I teach has actually made a difference to the students
which is what is most important to me,” said Pierce
and I’m so happy that it really helped
Helping the students learn better has been my most important goal
and I plan to continue trying new ideas in the hope that things can still be improved.”
and three additional courses at the 400 level
He also developed a project-oriented course called “Image Processing in Remote Sensing” for the College of Engineering (COE)’s Multidisciplinary Design Program
and mentored numerous students with their individual projects at the undergraduate and graduate level

Assisting the Montana communities of Helena
of Helena passed away peacefully in his loving home on February 21st after a short-term
for which there was no treatment options available
L.E and Juanita had their family moving from to state to state; Arizona
and finally Montana following the brick trade
They stopped in Helena when Smitty was in 5th grade and came to the conclusion that it was time for Leland to find roots and establish himself in the community
Athletics were a significant part of his life
which was a service organization that Smitty took great pride in being a part of
he attended MSU – Bozeman graduating with a Construction Technology Degree
Smitty came home to work the masonry contracting business with his father and learning the foundation of the brick trade
Smitty and Sharon enjoyed fifty-seven and half years together traveling to follow their children and grandchildren with sports and extra-circular activities
Leland’s parents established Smitty’s Fireplace Shop in 1970 where he came to work with them again
taking over the business until his own retirement
Leland was fortunate to have his children (Shawn and Robyn)
and his grandchildren (Shelby and Carson) working at the family business that his parent’s (L.E and Juanita)
Sharon and himself worked so hard in establishing in the community of Helena
Smitty’s Fireplace Shop is now a four-generation working business
Smitty has always said how fortunate he was to have so many amazing friends
He hunted and fished with Gary Mann for 55 years
but better yet worked with him for 35 years
Bill Huyser was a close business associate who became a great personal friend that he also hunted and golfed with
Marty Mouat and Bob Guffy were also good golfing buddies of Leland
Marty Mouat and Smitty would spend countless hours discussing their grandchildren’s sports activities along with local sports teams
You all know who you are and Leland is forever thankful for you
Leland was preceded in death by his parents
He is survived by his wonderful wife Sharon Smith
He touched so many lives in a positive manner
Smitty had very strong values and morals; who always tried to do what was right no matter how difficult it was
Smitty will surely be watching over us from above
there will be no public services as we are only doing a private family gathering
the family requests donations to be made in memory of Leland E
Our family would like to thank Katherine Bell
and the rest of the staff at Enhabit Home Health and Hospice for their compassionate care
Services are pending at this time or no services will be held

Leland my old friend you will be missed…..R.I.P………
Kind and gentle with a great sense of humor
I felt like he was my brother in law and Sharon my sister
Leland was an outstanding person and his son Shawn is just like him
I always enjoyed stopping by the shop and having great conversations
and doing business with Leland and his son
my sincere condolences go out to his family
Sue and I are very sad to hear of Leland’s passing
So many memories of seeing him at Smitty’s as well as playing against him in basketball
It was so wonderful to read about Leland in the Curt Synnness LOOKING BACK article recently in the IR
We will always think of him when we come to Smitty’s!!
Enjoyed Leland and Gary so much when they came up to Sheridan County pheasant hunting
Leland was a wonderful and caring man who I’m proud to have known for 30+ years
Great memories at the shop and the many pheasant hunting trips we took together to Sheridan County every October
My family and myself were fortunate to live by and know Leland on Chaparral Rd in the 1970′ and 80’s; as well his parents
They all helped wonderfully when we purchased our fireplaces
I remember Leland and you at HHS and have wonderful memories from those days
Both of you were always so nice and I remember attending your wedding
You all have always been in my thoughts over the years
Dean and the rest of the Smith/VanHemelryck families- We’re sure sorry to hear of Laland passing
calming and quiet presence at sporting events or in the store when I would run into him
another icon of the Helena community is lost
He may have been strong but I remember him as being very kind
I was lucky to have been in the same class of “65” with him
Later I bought several stoves at his store
One of the classiest people you could ever meet
we logged many miles together to play golf in Townsend with our mutual friend Marty Mouat
Even though he usually beat me by eight or nine strokes he always made me feel good by saying he got lucky and I actually played better than him
“Let’s play tomorrow” he’d say
Leland was definitely one of the cool dads
What an impact he made on his beautiful wife and family and the Helena Community
I have such great memories of you all growing up!
His legacy carries on with the people who loved him and there is no better legacy to leave
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Sharon and the rest of the family 🙏🙏🙏
i met Leland at Hawthorne all those years ago
i will never forget his mesmerizing even in those young years
i looked for him at our HHS reunions only to find out in his obituary that he graduated the year before us
but that i was put back into 5th grade at Christmas break
i remember that he was a kind and considerate person so young
i send my deepest & sincere condolences & love to Sharon and family
his eyes with the clearest blue; i never forgot
always friendly and genuinely nice to everyone
Sending hugs and prayers to Sharon and his family
I shopped at Smitty’s several times and was always impressed at their customer service and friend.y environment
I had the pleasure of meeting the Smith family a couple of times and instantly recognized them as an outstanding family; one and all
The Smith and Van Hemelryck families are a special clan and continue to live by the outstanding values of their elders
I am so sorry to learn of Leland’s passing
Every pelllet stove and fireplace I have ever had came from Smitty’s Fireplace Shop
Sharon and family I am so very sorry to hear of Leland’s passing
Carrying hod for my Dad on weekend projects usually meant a stop at Smitty’s
A laugh and a jab from Smitty about the hard work I was about to get into over the weekend always helped me get through it
It also convinced me to find a path to designing how the bricks go together rather than actually putting them together
visiting with the third and fourth generations
is as gratifying now as it was 40 years ago
I look forward to seeing Shawn and Robyn and the rest of the family the next time I am there
Shawn and Robyn and all of the Smith family sorry for your loss he was a great man and you can tell by all the comments
One of the hardest moments of my life was saying goodbye to Leland on February 7
having a wonderful visit with him on the 6th and 7th
He was the truest and dearest friend I have ever had
we spent many days golfing on courses all over the country and hunting mule deer on a ranch we leased together in eastern Montana
Robyn and the rest of the wonderful family that Leland was so proud of and loved so much
Robyn & Dean my condolences to all of you & your families
I enjoyed Smittys great sense of hummor & all of his hunting & a few fishing adventures he would share
My memories from high school are that he was such a nice guy
prayers for you and your family from a member of your extended family
We have loved Smitty,$ Fireplace store and service over many years
Mike mounted fish for Leland and thot highly of him and his family Dean has been out many times to adjust our fireplace and last year Robyn happily replaced our leaky birdbath – no questions asked
Looking thru the obits for the past couple of months and saw that Leland had passed away
Many memories related to basketball and softball competing against Smitty
My first memories go back to the YMCA in the early 60s and Leland hitting baseline jumpers from 8 to ten feet from the basket
Of course he continued to hit those shots for 30 or more years playing for HHS and “Smitty’s” in the rocking chair league
Leland would hit 98% of those baseline jumpers with a range out to 15 feet as he matured into an adult player
if he was closely guarded that percentage would drop drastically to about 94%
Smitty was a class act in everything he did

NC (WWAY) — A Leland-based furniture company has agreed to pay nearly $1.5 million in restitution and penalties for fraudulently obtaining and seeking forgiveness for Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans
admitted to inflating payroll figures in order to meet loan forgiveness requirements under the PPP
a COVID-19 relief program established by Congress in 2020
The DOJ said CSG received a $257,700 loan in April 2020
the company falsely claimed to have added employees and increased wages—when in fact
some individuals listed on the payroll didn’t work for the company and never received payment
Prosecutors said the company also boosted wages for current employees but required them to return the money
further inflating payroll numbers without actually increasing compensation
CSG submitted a loan forgiveness application using the fabricated payroll costs
The DOJ said the company repeated the scheme when applying for a second PPP loan of $213,006 in March 2021
CSG will pay $1,499,164 in restitution and penalties and will be subject to a three-year prosecution deferral
the company must avoid any further legal violations and comply with other terms of the agreement

a Washington County jury found James Leland Tijerina
unlawful sexual penetration in the second degree
unlawful delivery of methamphetamine to a minor (two counts)
unlawful delivery of a schedule II controlled substance to a minor (two counts)
and recklessly endangering another person in court case number 23CR05555
He was also found guilty of felon in possession of a firearm after a bench trial
the defendant was sentenced to 570 months in prison
the defendant pleaded guilty to attempted murder in the first degree with a firearm
unlawful possession of a controlled substance- substantial quantity
and witness tampering in court case number 23CR50076
Deputy District Attorney Rayney Meisel prosecuted the first case and Deputy District Attorneys Alyssa Camp and Mahalee Streblow prosecuted the attempted murder case
Charges in the first case stem from a February 9
incident in which the defendant provided fentanyl to a 12-year-old girl
The victim became unresponsive after she and the defendant smoked the drug and the defendant called 911
Investigators learned the victim was a runaway and had spent the last several days with the defendant
After initially denying an inappropriate relationship with the defendant
the victim disclosed several instances of abuse committed by Mr
Tijerina and provided photos and videos that helped corroborate her disclosure
She told detectives with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office that the defendant gave her methamphetamine and fentanyl several times over the course of a few days
She also described how the defendant raped her while she was under the influence of the drugs he provided
a second minor victim known to the defendant also told authorities that he gave her acid following a surgery when she was 12 years old
The defendant was arrested and indicted by a Washington County grand jury in the first case and was released by the court pending his trial
He failed to appear for a court hearing and on October 10
the defendant became involved in a high-speed chase with Washington County deputies
which reached speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour
the defendant fired several rounds directly at a Washington County deputy who was attempting to stop the vehicle
He fired from such a short range that the deputy could see the muzzle flash as the defendant opened fire
The deputy had to swerve away from gunfire while driving at approximately 80 miles per hour
A shelter-in-place order was given to residents in the City of Gaston during the ordeal
Law enforcement deployed spike strips and eventually stopped the vehicle
“Deputy Michael Vargas was targeted because he was displaying extreme bravery by trying to stop a vehicle that was posing a danger to the community
despite the obvious risks for his own safety,” said DDA Camp
The defendant was arrested and taken to the Washington County Jail
where it was discovered that he had smuggled a substantial quantity of fentanyl into the jail
The defendant then called one of the witnesses from the jail and told her not to appear in order to provide testimony against him
That witness later disclosed being fearful of retaliation if she participated as a witness in the cases
After the defendant was found guilty on all counts in the first case
he pleaded guilty to all counts in the second case
“It’s been a long road for everyone involved in and affected by Mr
Tijerina’s actions over the last three years.” DDA Meisel said after the trial
“These guilty verdicts and guilty pleas represent a path to true healing for all who have been victimized by Mr
The Washington County District Attorney’s Office commends the bravery of the victims in reporting the defendant’s abuse
This office also acknowledges the work of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office on these cases
Leland residents have a forecast of more residents and roundabouts in their future
The town of Leland has gone from having only one roundabout to nearly 20 in approximately five years. After seeing traffic improvements, a town official says more are on the way as more development moves in
There are currently 16 roundabouts located within Leland's town limits on both public and private streets
Leland Communications Manager Jessica Jewell said
The number does not include roundabouts found in parking lots
"Roundabouts are maintained by a mix of the North Carolina Department of Transportation
the town of Leland and private property owners," Jewell said

Town sees improvements and no issuesThe town has seen traffic flow improvements from the roundabouts
keep vehicles moving more consistently and lower the likelihood and severity of collisions at intersections
"Our police department has not reported any common issues related to the existing roundabouts," she added
Leland officials are preparing for more commercial and residential growth this year
Residents might also be preparing for more roundabouts
More: One structure stands above all as development continues across Leland
Jewell said some newer developments are proposing to install roundabouts
she did not state whether these proposals will be on public or private property
"While the town has received development plans that include additional roundabouts
none of these have been confirmed or constructed at this time," she said
roundabouts are new and can cause feelings of discomfort and stress
The Leland Police Department advises drivers who may be unfamiliar or uncomfortable with roundabouts to: Slow down when approaching the roundabout
yield to traffic already in the circle and wait for a safe gap before entering
The department also recommends drivers use turn signals when exiting a roundabout
stay in their respective lane and avoid passing other vehicles inside the roundabout
Watching for pedestrians and cyclists at crosswalks and yielding appropriately is also important
they become easy to navigate," Jewell said
"Police encourage all drivers to take their time and stay alert as they travel through them."

the town is working to conserve hundreds of acres of forested land
Residents have been vocal about their concerns about the future of Leland’s natural areas as developers work to keep up with growing demand for housing. The town’s population increased by 105.2% between 2010 and 2022
the town is “taking a proactive approach to balance development with environmental preservation,” according to a U.S

bathrooms and mountain biking trails on the Silver Timber Tract
The property was appraised for $1.87 million
but the town has signed an Intent to Purchase agreement with the current owners for $1.25 million
the town would use the Community Forest Grant to fund the purchase
The Goodman Property is 205 acres and is located directly south of the Silver Timber Tract
The property is over 85% forested and is currently zoned for rural low density residential development
The site has been privately owned by the same family for over 30 years
The property has been appraised for $1.66 million and the town is seeking the grant funding for the purchase
More StarNews: Accessing local journalism is even easier with the StarNews app
The town acknowledged the harm of potential overdevelopment in the grant application
“The demand for new housing to accommodate Leland’s rapidly increasing population has already resulted in significant development activity
multi-family units and commercial spaces,” the town stated in the application
“Forested properties are at risk of being cleared to meet these needs
especially as infrastructure expands to support the growing population
The rising property values driven by demand for residential and commercial land may pressure landowners to sell or convert forested properties for development purposes
reducing the amount of green space available.”
Neither property is within town limits, Leland communications manager Jessica Jewell said. While Leland was stripped of its annexation power in 2023
state law allows municipalities to purchase properties outside of their corporate limits
Forest Service awarded $5.1 million across 13 community forest projects in 2024
If similar amounts are allotted to 2025 applications
it’s unlikely that the grant would cover the full cost of the purchases
The largest community forest grants that the program awarded were $600,000
Grant requires land to be at risk of developmentLand must meet several requirements to be eligible for the Community Forest Program grant
The land must not be held in trust by the U.S.
be suitable to sustain natural vegetation and be at least 75% forested
It must provide community benefits including economic benefits through active forest management
education opportunities and public access for recreation
One key element for land to be eligible for the program is that it must be threatened by conversion to non-forest use
The land must be buildable and at risk of being developed
This factor was a point of contention for another conservation effort across the Cape Fear River in New Hanover County
Residents were concerned when nonprofit organization Unique Places to Save moved to acquire a portion of the Sledge Forest property that is unbuildable
While the acquisition would cut the number of units that the developer could build on the property by roughly 1,000
the purchase would not preserve any acreage that was at risk of development
Previous coverage: How was New Hanover's biggest recent housing proposal made possible? Here's what to know
The nonprofit submitted a grant proposal to the N.C
Land and Water Fund that included a $10.2 million request alongside a $5 million match donated by the landowner
the NCLWF will need to evaluate the project to determine its “ability to contribute towards protection of specific conservation values,” according to a statement from Unique Places to Save

One of Leland's largest communities continues to grow
Phase five of the East Lake housing development is being reviewed by Leland’s technical review committee
The project will bring hundreds of single-family homes to the Malmo area near Compass Pointe but is just a small sliver of the master-planned community
Stay informed: Accessing local journalism is even easier with the StarNews app
East Lake’s fifth phase includes 346 single-family homes along East Lake Boulevard southeast of Malmo Loop Road
The 129-acre site is currently vacant and is largely zoned for medium-density residential development
The minimum lot size for units in the phase is 5,040 square feet
slightly below East Lake’s average lot size of 5,800 square feet
The project will have a density of 2.68 units per acre
Previous coverage: This 2,000-acre development could join Compass Pointe near busy Leland area intersection
The subdivision will include a pool and sports courts
Nearly 11 acres of open space will be provided
which is more than double what is required by the zoning district
Over 600 acres of wetlands are present across the property

How does East Lake compare to Brunswick Forest? When the project is finished
the East Lake development will have 3,925 single family lots
693 townhomes and 300 multifamily units across 2,114 acres
The development is slightly smaller than Brunswick Forest
which is slated to bring a total of 5,443 homes to Leland upon completion
with Brunswick Forest’s homes spanning more than 4,500 acres
A full build-out was initially projected for 2032
but a lengthy approval process likely pushed the completion date back
the community is expected to generate more than 32,700 vehicle trips per weekday
74/76 will be over or near capacity by the time East Lake is complete
Malmo Loop Road is also projected to be over capacity
requiring additional turn lanes and signals to accommodate growing traffic demands
Homes in the community are being sold by Dream Finders Homes
With both single-family homes and townhomes
floor plans range from 1,379 to 2,666 square feet
While no move-in ready homes are currently available
prices start at $283,990 and go up to $371,990
Homes in Brunswick Forest range from $375,000 to $899,000
Master-planned communities appear to be the current trend in Leland
is located just north of East Lake and is slated to bring thousands of units to the town
The development will be completed in phases
with the first phase approved to build 161 of the 2,679 residential units
Phases two and three are currently being considered by the town’s technical review committee
Further south, the Pinewood and Grayson Park communities continue to grow with new amenity centers under review for both projects. Dozens of duplexes are also under review in Brunswick Forest

Name: Julius Yoh; Institution: The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art; Program: Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program; Education Level: Undergraduate Student
Julius Yoh is a rising senior at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, majoring in chemical engineering. Julius completed his Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) project at National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) Pittsburgh where he researched existing dispersion models to determine which model would most accurately predict the behavior of carbon dioxide plumes following a pipe rupture
The goal of Julius’ research was to determine the optimal dispersion model – a way to predict heat transfer
and chemical reactions occurring in a system – to address accidental carbon dioxide leakages in pipelines.
Julius’ MLEF project relates to his immediate post-bachelor’s degree goals of working in the carbon capture industry to improve the efficiency of electrochemical systems
He was first enamored with science research after completing a high school project where he researched seawater desalination in an electrodialysis process
Julius’ fascination with chemical engineering combined with a motivating research mentor inspired him to continue his studies in college
he was excited about the learning opportunities available at a national lab and the ability to gain valuable literature review experience.
His analytical skills from chess have greatly translated to his research and academic work
his family moved continually throughout Washington State

Beyond the Data: China’s Economy with Leland Miller
Elizabeth Economy sits down with Leland Miller to go behind the curtain of the Chinese economy and Trump 2.0
Elizabeth Economy and Leland Miller talk about his experiences running China Beige Book
and conclude with a discussion about the Trump Administration’s trade policy
Miller discusses the early skepticism surrounding the China Beige Book and the process of transforming it into a valuable tool that gathers data from across the Chinese economy while serving as an independent “check” to the Chinese government
He provides insight into the methodology used
from conducting thousands of surveys within China
and market data which altogether provide a unique view of the Chinese economy and at times
The two then transition to a conversation on the Trump Administration
having a nuanced discussion on how tariffs and a reshaping of US trade policy affect both the domestic and global economy
They weren't asking for better information on China to their detriment
Because I think what the idea was is they said
but directionally they gotta be correct and it's good enough
you're not gonna get the real story no matter what you do
when we started China Beige Book there was a lot of pushback on what we were doing
it actually complicates the picture for you to tell us what's really going on because markets react to what the official picture is
So if you're telling us what's really happening and Beijing painting this beautiful picture something else
which is echoed by the World bank and the IMF and
And so it might actually hurt us to know what's really going on
I think that sort of view fell apart as you got into the Xi Jinping era and the economy slowed down
You started to have credit crises and capital outflow
None of these were foreshadowed by what was happening in official data
No weakness showed something was about to fall off
people really started to understand that you need a check on what the Chinese government's doing
I don't think there's anybody out there who still does
You're not getting enough granular information
You're not understanding government stimulus policies and what they're doing
You need a broader picture and you need one that reflects something that's more than just
And that's often what Chinese data reflect
we were with the Chinese economy shut down in 2020 and then it emerged the Chinese government announced 2.6
coming off a quarter which the economy shut down
Now that may have been very true for like a handful of state owned businesses in Beijing and Shanghai and Guangdong
So what we wanted to do at China Beige Book is paint a picture of the entire economy
We wanted to track state firms and private firms
we wanted to track large firms and small firms
We wanted to track all the different dynamics and not just growth
all these baskets which were really important
And by that we were able to tell the story of all the different Chinas and all the different China's in aggregate tell the story about China
But what it did was allow us to paint a picture of what's really going on in China that was divorced from this idea that China was growing at this beautiful steady rate or eventually a very steadily but stable declining rate
And I think that when we got into the Trump years
And so now I think people utilize China Beige Book as a way of just understanding China
the small group that we went forward with said
And we survey across China to get this information
But I think what we did over time is show that we are calling balls and strikes
Regardless of what we are in our personal capacity back home
at China Beige Book we're calling balls and strikes
people thought of us through the bare lens because we were saying over and over
way early during the great financial crisis when things were still high and still Quite good in 2012 and some of the succeeding years because of all the big stimulus
here's what's happening in the credit markets
here's what's happening in terms of loan demand
here's what's happening in terms of all these other dynamics
and we showed that through our data and explained why
Beijing's out there calling 8% GDP every single quarter
But the handful of times where markets got really
really worried about China and you start hearing that China collapsed stuff on CNBC and Bloomberg and
when the whole world was panicked that China was collapsing
we were the only ones who would come out and say
Our data are about the same as they were last quarter
So half the time where there's all these collapse panic
So I think that over time we showed that we're truly calling balls and strikes
Sometimes we're much more bearish than what the government is showing
And our data actually recently has been a bit more bullish after being quite a lot more negative than official data from
The key here is if you're the Chinese government and you're not acknowledging big weakness
to recognize or at least show real improvements
So sometimes our data are actually better than official data
there's a certain amount of respect for that
we hear a lot about the middle income trap
And is China going to be able to escape the middle income trap
What's your sense for where the Chinese economy has been
You read the GDP numbers and they've always been historically beautiful and stable
And the key part of that is anything the Chinese government predicted always came to pass
And it wasn't because these guys are economic magicians
and it wasn't because they're prognosticators of legendary status
It was because GDP was created in a way that they would grow at a certain level organically
They had a 8% GDP target for that year or that quarter
And then they just juiced the economy through stimulus
Now it was funny because China watching a decade ago used to be this complete fraud where people who would walk
run around predicting the GDP that the government would predict
They knew the number was going to be forecast before it was released
China would then grow at 7.8% because it became the official number
And everyone walked around the room high fiving themselves
And so this was this fraudulent exercise for many years now
had his power solidified and got through some of the anti corruption stuff
said this model doesn't work for us anymore
We can't do this forever or we're going to be creating enormous vulnerabilities for the party
And what we've seen in spurts over the last five years
has been a move away from the idea that they need to have high levels of growth
The social compact the party used to have of the people was we'll deliver you high levels of growth and we're going to make everybody rich
And eventually that became impossible because the bad debt built up in the economy and it was changed around 2021 or so
cracking down on billionaires and the tech crackdowns and other things
They moved away from the old social compact too
healthier growth and we're going to distribute the wealth more evenly
And so the idea here was we're not gonna target these extraordinarily high levels of growth
We're not going to worry about growth for growth's sake quite so much
There is a little bit of a political sensitivity there
But what we're going to do is we're going to try to build a stronger China
And what that's moved over the last several years has been this incredible emphasis on national security priorities instead of growth for growth's sake
That's building up a domestic chip ecosystem
it's lessening the reliance on the US dollar payment system because the entire Chinese economy is in some ways built on the US dollar
They've got all these vulnerabilities that's what keeps Xi Jinping up at night
So more and more the economy has been moved towards growing at slower rates
They're not worried about the rate as long as it doesn't create a problem
A spiral downward and they're moving towards a completely economic parent
focus on the national security and try to get the debt under control within limits
they get plaudits for what they did on investment
but they get a failing grade for what they did on consumption
we're totally on the opposite side of Wall Street Journal
A lot of our other friends who look at what's happening in China's property sector and say it's chaos
this shows the bankruptcy of the Chinese communist system
there's a lot of things that show the bankruptcy of the Chinese communist system
I don't think this is one of them because what they're trying to do is stage manage a massive diminution of the property sector as a growth driver for China's economy
So if you have something that's driving maybe 25% of growth and you maybe high single digits
the tightening of credit throughout the property sector in the broader economy
But you can't just do that in a linear path or the bottom will fall out because y 60
If you just see your property prices go down every single month and a straight line down
And that's actually what happened Last fall
I think you got to a low point where the Chinese government saw consumer sentiment falling off a cliff
And it had the potential to create this doom confidence loop where everything starts falling
which is why they stepped in with something that wasn't as big as everyone thought it would be
but it was certainly louder and it did do a bunch of stuff to set a floor on the economy
So I think that the idea here is not that they have stepped up and done all these healthy things
which is one of the big problems they've had
They're gonna have to work on this over and over and over and over and over again
And then when things are starting to get problematic
then you have to step in and what the way we described this
And what that means is they're trying to take out these weak zombie firms inside the property sector
the stronger industry players are starting to weaken and have real problems
It looks like property stress can flow outside the property sector
you give more credit access to these firms
But what's been so impressive about what Beijing has done
is it then they have not gone back for years and years and years
and then they panic and they go the other direction
The property sector story has been for years and years and years
But then they go right back to the tightening cycle
So you can actually see this on our credit data
they take care of the problem and they continue to tighten
we're in a ventilation cycle right now with property
they're trying to do this just not in a straight line because that would cause potential panic
we're seeing a little bit of an upward trajectory in the sector
we've seen President Xi talk about moving away from the property and toward
sort of the energy sector with regard to new energy and battery storage
it sounded like he was getting prepared to repeat some of the same problems that they had with the property sector
And then you're going to end up with the same problem that you had in the property sector
which you still have in the property sector
Or do you think what China's investing in now is ultimately has the potential to be more productive than the real estate sector
that somehow these investing in these industries is then going to gin up the economy further
or do you see this as something fundamentally new and smarter
they built up this massive ecosystem now that they sort of liberalize the sector
and EV companies and everyone who supplies those types of firms
they're all dying right now because there's a price war
They got to find new markets and they're going outward
So I think Xi Jinping is comfortable with the fact that they're throwing this money because they don't want to be reliant on technology inputs from the West
They also want to dominate the fourth Industrial revolution
which means they have to produce this stuff
But I think that the problem comes not from what they're doing
China has the largest trade surplus in history
They have the largest goods trade surplus in history
the broader trade surplus is it a trillion
China is the largest single component of that
what you have right now is a dynamic where China has been a manufacturing powerhouse before
ramped it up because of a lot of dynamics of supply chains during COVID
So the manufacturing sector went like gangbusters throughout COVID and increased its share
And now you're at a point where Xi Jinping comes out in 2024 and says
we're going to double down on our double down through something called new quality productive forces
And what we're going to do through that is we're going to have a whole of government effort to manufacture more
this comes at a time where they're already dominating the share of global manufacturing
If you look at some of the statistics that the UN has put out
it's not just because Trump is our president
Certainly both parties don't like what's happening in the trade relationship
all these other places where Chinese overcapacity threatens to take out domestic indust back home
So I think that the problem here is not that Xi Jinping isn't willing to push forward this manufacturing plan
that there's going to be a political reaction from having doubled down and doubled down again globally
And they're just simply not going to allow for Chinese EVs to take over all domestic markets
some will be export controls and other things
So I want to come back to this in a minute
but let's just sort of wrap up with the domestic economy
So as you're looking at the Chinese economy and you see some
is the private sector in China coming back
is there a new confidence in the private sector
and you mentioned sort of the crackdown on big tech in China a couple of years ago
we've seen gradually the private sector recede in China
which I don't think is anything that anybody expected
10 or 15 years ago when you started China Beige Book
we thought that the private sector was expanding and the state was receding
So do we see now a newfound confidence coming out of the private sector
multinationals from the United States and elsewhere will start to come back and start investing in China
Because another consequence of Xi Jinping's approach to the Chinese economy has been
geopolitical tensions has been that foreign direct investment in China has largely dried up over the past few years
Private firms don't want to invest their future
we have all these growth metrics where we track whether
whether profits are going up in revenue and headline metrics
under the hood metrics are really important
And what we've seen from that for years now from private firms has been very
Now there was a little bit of bounce up recently and we're wondering
Have things cyclically bottomed and they're bouncing back up
But I think the bigger issue is that private firms
I think look at the horizon and I don't think they like what they see
they're seeing Xi Jinping's push to centralize everything and more responsibility on state owned firms at the disadvantage of private firms
So I don't think their trends are particularly healthy or optimistic
And I don't think private firms in China feel particularly good right now when you have things that hit the headlines like deep seek and people get excited about individual private firms or individual Chinese technological advances
Flood in to big Chinese tech companies and saying
I don't think that that's what's happening
very sophisticated impressive Chinese technology firms
and maybe some of those are attracting greater inflows
if you're looking from outside of China into China
you're not seeing a particularly appetizing situation
And part of that's because of what Xi Jinping is doing at home
You're not liking that from an investor standpoint
But if you're a private firm trying to dodge all this stuff at home
there is the possibility that something happens
something bigger and maybe US-China trade tensions lessen significantly for some reason
the horizon looks better from a trade perspective and from a geopolitical perspective
And Xi Jinping does bigger stimulus and he talks about providing more to private firms and actually follows through for the first time
So it's not impossible that you see this type of reversal
I don't think the trends that we're seeing either domestically in China or
or outside of China looking in are particularly conducive to having a positive view on private firms in China
we saw President Trump begin with the tariffs in during his first term
He didn't actually lower any of the tariffs or take them off completely
but actually put some new tariffs on in particular sectors
Is just this represent just a complete lack of creativity on the part of the United States in terms of how we can deal with what is a legitimate set of issues with regard to our trade relationship with China
Most of the tariff battles were about getting to a deal
They were tariffs for negotiating leverage
And I think that is why coming into the second term so many people were out there saying he doesn't really mean this stuff
Trump sent a lot of his top emissaries who became the Commerce Secretary
and others out onto financial media to say those types of things
So I think the way to look at tariffs is that there are several different reasons for
for why the Trump administration will push tariffs forward
The smallest of all of them is what was happened with Mexico and Canada
So Trump does not necessarily want a long term battle with
get the Mexicans and the Canadians to do certain things
It's not at all clear whether he communicated those to them
but he wanted to do certain things and then call them off
He wanted to get a success story here on Mexico and Canada
But I think because of the early experience of Mexico and Canada
markets are reading the wrong lesson into what the rest of the term is gonna look like
There are two other reasons to have tariffs
if you're the Trump White House trying to push them forward
one is to use them to restructure economic relationships
And they want to restructure economic Relationships
So the idea of setting up a tariff wall and then cutting tariffs for domestic manufacturers and bringing back
The other part of this is they want tariffs to be paid for
You need a broader type of tariff to apply
some sort of global tariff to bring in sufficient revenue
because there is a plan and there has been a plan
and the plan is just whatever Trump decides he wants to change the plan to that particular day
would anyone have said that China would have gotten off easiest in the early going and maybe Canada the hardest and the EU next
That wasn't necessarily the way I heard it was gonna be scripted out
I think they're sort of a best case scenario for China
they don't want 10% tariffs on their goods
But if they can have a 10% tariff and Mexico and Canada
that is going to shift the trade deficit even larger onto Chinese production
So we're gonna be buying more from China with a 25% Mexico Canada tariff and a 10% China tariff
It's certainly not a worst case scenario for us
I think we're talking about the global tariffs and the latest iteration of that is this reciprocal tariff where they're working on
But I think that the big takeaway here is that tariffs are gonna play a much more fundamental role in the economic strategy of this administration
There's this idea that if Trump sees a 2% fall at the stock market
he'll get scared off and run the other direction
They have much more desire to push forward a broader tariff program
They want to completely change these international relationships bilaterally and multilaterally
So I think we're gonna be seeing a lot of this tariff talk going forward
And I think that one of the lessons that I think Trump brought out
maybe his regret from his first term is if you listen to so many of these advisors around him telling him
And there are certain things you can't really do from a sequencing perspective
like tariff Mexico heavy at the same time you tariff China heavy
or you're gonna have enormous inflationary pressure building
but if you do it at more of a level you don't have an exemption
then you're going to also have inflationary pressure
then there are a lot of things that this can accomplish
hopefully you get out of this with an agreement
but certainly into 2026 when USMCA is revised so there'll be more tiffs between the Mexican Canadians
how to make sure the supply chains need to be diversified outside of China
the biggest issue right now is not just technology and all these other issues
either now or next year or the year after that
Whether it's EVs or it's batteries or it's legacy chips
The biggest issue is supply chains that are reliant on China and that they could cut off pharmaceuticals
As long as you allow leverage over another country to be able to have these
much more of a push against China in terms of supply chain diversification
using export controls or investment restrictions as necessary
I think 2/3 of the Europeans would say thank you
that doesn't mean it's going to be done nicely and it doesn't mean there's not going to be ruffled feathers there
But if you think if the end of this was a push to release the fiscal breaks in the eu
you pushed for weapons to be able to be paid for outside the restrictions of borrowing
So you actually could fund yourself sufficient weaponry to be able to defend your own continent
you were moving closer to some sort of capital markets union where you could actually fund innovation at the ground level
you could see a Europe two or three years from now
he pushed us to do some things we otherwise wouldn't have been able to do because Germany's this stodgy bear in the middle that just sits there with his arms crossed and won't let any development happen
So if you get to that point and then you have an agreement between the
here are things we are going to not just unite on
you have the ability to have a much more powerful transatlantic relationship if you get some of this stuff out of the way early on
but the idea that this is not a plan that can be done if sequenced right and laid out
Not sure I'm buying this one right now as I'm watching everything unfold
but maybe that's just a lack of strategic foresight on my part
is President Trump has come in hot and heavy
I think it's even within the first two weeks of his administration talking about Chinese influence in Panama and specifically targeting what he sees as control over the Panama Canal
we have not had any issue with the transit of our ships and goods through the Panama Canal to date
It is true that at both ends of the Panama Canal
So I think that Panama Canal always been interesting because there's such a heavy Chinese presence there
Is Belt and Road that big a deal when some of these countries draw
So I think that what there is right now is this concerted effort at the beginning of the administration to say
We're worried about Chinese control of strategic waterways
It's about enough is enough is enough with the Chinese doing things in our hemisphere
and we're going to start pushing back against that as a priority
So I think what you have to look at here is a strategy
but I think the strategy itself is sound in that we have been too lethargic on pushing back against Chinese influence and Chinese movements for a long time
and I think you're going to have a great answer to this one because you've already started to talk about this
If you were sitting in the White House right now
what would you advise President Trump as you're looking at the US China trade relationship
President Trump is going to do what President Trump wants on trade and tariffs
fundamental to the way he thinks about the world
So steering him away from any type of things like that
I think is not particularly a fruitful approach
But I think that the better way to look at this and what I have advised this administration to do
is to try to have a more comprehensive strategy towards China
I think the reason that we on both sides of the aisle have failed in the past is every time somebody pushes one thing
it comes at the expense of another program
You have a focus on investment restrictions
and we're trying to hit that target instead of coming across and saying
what do we need to do in order to have a smarter US China economic strategy
I'm a commissioner on the US China Commission and anything I say is not reflective
But what we did do last year is have this hearing that I co chaired on key economic strategies towards China
And the idea behind it was we need to think of a way to figure out where the vulnerabilities in the relationship are and go at those in a concerted ways with allies and partners
make sure we have thoughtful technology controls to make sure that we're not providing the inputs for the PLA to build an army to kill us
Let's make sure we have investment restrictions so that all these funds that we refuse to identify and track as a US Government don't end up flowing to the party
So I think you need some of these defensive measures put into place on trade
you need to be worried about what's happening back home
We have enormous supply chain vulnerabilities to China
And we have a deindustrialized economy that is in really
We don't have the ability to build ships anymore
we don't have the ability to build icebreakers or we don't have the ability to build a lot of things anymore
We need to build up our manufacturing prowess here
it'll be with allies and partners in cahoots
But we need to have an offensive defensive plan that's an integrated comprehensive strategy on China
then that means we don't have to have some sort of
throw every anti China thing against the wall and see what sticks
You figure out what the real vulnerabilities are for the United States
and what opportunities we should be taking advantage of
Focus on those three to five things and then build out from there and have an integrated economic security strategy for the United States that's principally based on our long term competition with China
I think that there's a possibility the administration moves towards this
I think there's also a possibility that tariffs end up taking all the oxygen out of the room
which is why it's really important that people with sort of a nuanced take on keep pushing
keep pushing for people in charge to be doing the more sensible thing
But those are organizations that are kind of frontline proactive in terms of bolstering US presence on the ground
whether it could be in technology training
But really helping to support democracy across the world
Is that the kind of thing that we ought to be thinking about also in terms of a comprehensive strategy with regard to
And I think the next year or so we'll be walking back from some of those things
They're going to look closely at some of the things that USAID funded and they're going to say
And then they're going to look at other things
This is focusing on the Chinese Communist Party in a way that maybe other think tanks and the government itself can't do
So I think it's about getting past this initial burst of sort of headline
and then moving into figuring out exactly the way that we need to fund some of these things
in the government or out right now who think that taking away all these things is a good idea
but it's happening as part of a broader sweep
So the hope is that the bad stuff gets swept away
even as someone who's entering the field right now with a lot of technical expertise
if you don't understand the Cultural Revolution
and all these important parts of how we got to where China is right now
It's also important in understanding Xi's mindset
that his family was purged and then he sort of went through all this
my favorite biography of Mao is the Jung Chang book
But in addition to doing the reading on what US China relations are right now and how we got here
go back and read the fundamental stuff from the 70s and the 80s and the 90s
And that would be my recommendation for people trying to get in the China field that maybe didn't have a background in Chinese history originally
Beijing will give that to him in a heartbeat
If the idea is we're going to move towards a phase two deal as it used to be described
which is we're going to fundamentally force a restructuring of the Chinese economy
then I don't think that we can get there easily because we're never going to be able to tell China to restructure
What we could do is we could put the economic strategies in place via tariffs and tariff rate quotas
all these other things to make this restructuring happen
because we have such leverage in the economy as the big consumer base
So I think we can make some of these structural things happen if we're willing to take some pain
But the idea that we're going to come to some grand agreement
I think that Trump could come to a phase two deal
but I think there'd be enormous pressure throughout the rest of the term to say
The last panel was completely on allies and partners and how to coordinate your strategy
So you get maximum oomph for your export controls
maximum oomph for your investment restrictions
The tension here is that most of our allies and partners don't want to do what we want to do
So how do we get there without causing some pain in the meantime
And I think that's the problem that President Trump is left with
how do we get from A to D and not go through some problems in B and C

Every time I need to write a column, my fellow coworker John Staton seems as if he is in my mind and stealing my idea
since John already wrote about being a native of Wilmington (which I am
he suggested I write about Brunswick County
since that's where I've lived for the last 26 years
which calls itself the "Gateway to Brunswick County." To say I have seemed a lot of changes would be an understatement for a town that's grown in a flash
the one thing I remember is how long and how much traffic there was getting across the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge
I live off of Mount Misery Road. Mount Misery Road is not named because of how miserable it can be at times. But there's a possibility that Mount Misery Road was named that because enslaved Africans were being taken off boats near Mount Misery, then being forced to walk the 90 miles to Fayetteville
and it would get so busy during school days because one reason was that I would get stopped by trains (most times about 15 minutes or longer) and also there was no turning lane to get to Lincoln Elementary School
I will still have to wait for all the people that will be turning left to get to Lincoln Elementary
Thank goodness now there is a devoted turning lane to Lincoln Elementary and the Mount Misery Road overpass opened June 10, 2017
which is a "heaven sent" for me and my children
I will always remember when my son said he got stuck by the train and he was so tired that he fell asleep waiting for the train to pass
He woke up when a sheriff's deputy knocked on his car window because the train had finally pass
The overpass sends drivers up and around the rail crossing leading into CSX’s Davis Yard
There were only two grocery stores ― Piggly Wiggly and Food Lion ― in "town" off of Village Road over 8 miles away and it took over 10 minutes to get there
There was also a Family Dollar and Dollar General store in the Clairmont shopping center
Now there is a Food Lion off of Mount Misery Road on Reed Road. A Dollar General is across the street it once was in the same area of Food Lion. In July 2022, because of the growth in Leland, a new traffic signal was being installed at the intersection of U.S. 74 and Mt. Misery Road
Once you pass the second railroad track (before the overpass was built)
which leads me to Leland Middle School and North Brunswick High School (on Old Fayetteville Road)
It was hard getting to those schools because it only had a flashing signal
Department of Transportation installed a traffic signal just south of U.S
74 at the intersection of Lanvale and Old Fayetteville roads
That was truly a blessing and a great improvement
that produced Dacron polyester fiber and intermediate materials
It was one of the largest facilities in Brunswick County
traffic coming and going to DuPont was always so heavy and busy
so at the time there was a dedicated stop light just before Dogwood Road off of Mt
The DuPont-Cape Fear Plant discontinued production in 2013; the manufacturing facilities were decommissioned and 600 people lost their jobs
Some major changes that I have welcomed and love the most is when Harris Teeter open along U.S
so now I do not need to visit Wilmington as much when I need to shop
A Walmart opened in October 2006 at the Westgate mixed-use complex in Leland
there are businesses such as Lowe's Home Improvement (opened September 2023)
a Dollar Tree store when "everything was a dollar."
Growing up I used to visit a 7-Eleven and now there is one located in the Ocean Gate Center Plaza in Leland
there is Lowes Foods and Chipotle Mexican Grill
When I needed gas, I had to travel to Village Road or U.S. 17, both over 10 minutes, so when the MayWay Lanvale Station finally opened
I can go on and on about the changes I have seen
but another final thought and one that turned out to be a "big blessing" was when I-140 (also known as the U.S
It was a blessing because when the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge closed this past January for repairs and when I needed to go to Wilmington
the I-140 bridge was the alternative route that I used
Leland Pereira MPA/ID 2026, Katie Chen MPA/ID 2025, and Jose Llondra MPA/ID 2025 recently met with prospective students in Nairobi, Kenya to discuss the Master in Public Administration in International Development (MPA/ID) Program
the hosts shared their experiences in the MPA/ID Program and answered questions on topics ranging from application strategy to student life
Here’s what Leland shared about the event.
the MPA/ID Program has had a profound impact on me
and impact-oriented classmates who continuously challenge and broaden my perspective
and I wanted to pay it forward by helping others learn more about the program
The event allowed for an informal but engaging discussion with about seven attendees
We sat around a table and talked through their questions about the program
and development startup employees—all from different educational backgrounds
If your language of instruction has ever been English
Many students in the program are multilingual
and fluency in multiple languages is a huge asset
Focus on your aspirations and answer two key questions:
etc.—should fit together to tell a cohesive story
MPA/ID students have a wide variety of undergraduate majors—there’s no single path to the program
Prerequisites can be taken online from various universities
The Admissions Committee views the application holistically
You should take the test early so you have the flexibility to retake it if needed
Financial aid is available through HKS’s application process, but there are also external scholarships which you should definitely pursue
The global reach of the MPA/ID Program is incredible
We had a prospective student who had landed in Nairobi that very morning but still made it to the session after reaching out to Katie Chen
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Your application should be deeply personal
Also, take advantage of the MPA/ID Program team
and Erin Meade are incredibly responsive
you’ll actually get personalized responses from the program staff themselves
Leland Pereira MPA/ID 2026 spent the last three years living in Nairobi
working as a consultant at Boston Consulting Group
where he focused on climate adaptation in the food and agriculture sector
he hopes to work with growth-stage companies building resilience in emerging markets—particularly in food and agriculture

NewsNation’s Chief Washington Anchor Leland Vittert (Medill ’05) said he arrived at Northwestern by chance
choosing to study journalism because it didn’t have a language requirement at the time
more than 20 years since stepping foot on campus
he’s earned a coveted spot as a prime-time cable news anchor
Vittert served as a foreign correspondent for Fox News Channel for more than 10 years
He also previously anchored the weekend news at KDVR-TV in Denver
The Daily sat down with Vittert to discuss his time at NU
his career and his recent jump to prime-time television.
This interview has been edited for brevity and clarity
The Daily: What made you want to stick with journalism once you got to Northwestern
Vittert: I think what’s always attracted me and what keeps me at it now is the ability to really tell stories
There’s a magic in being able to tell people’s stories
you’re really telling individual people’s stories
this person’s cat got caught in a tree … You’re really telling the story of a couple of people
and you’re telling good stories.
The Daily: What was your Northwestern experience like
But the thing that I think is so remarkable about my experience about Northwestern is a guy named (former Prof.) Joe Angotti
(I was) somebody who wasn’t a great student
but he saw somebody that really believed in what journalism was about
and I’ll be forever grateful for that
and you’ve reported all over America
What did local reporting teach you that you wouldn’t have learned from starting with national or international reporting
Vittert: I was probably in the last vintage of people who came up through local news
The advice I had always gotten was go practice your craft
I say this respectfully to all the people that I work with who did not come up through local
but people who came up through local have a different skill set
They can think on their feet in a different way
They can connect out in the field with viewers
It’s one thing to connect and interview a congressman
It’s another thing to be able to drop into where there’s been a school shooting or a disaster or a plane crash or a riot and connect on this very deep interpersonal basis quickly with someone who’s in the middle of a crisis
The Daily: You started working for Fox News Channel in 2010 as a foreign correspondent
What went into the decision to make that big jump to reporting in Jerusalem
and what was it like to go from local news to international news
I’d always wanted to see the world and get the Peter Jennings education.
Going to the Middle East was definitely hanging on
For somebody who is young to go to war and to see the world differently
it was the experience I think I needed then to be able to come back to Washington and work.
and you also had the chance to cover Ukraine and Russia
How have those experiences helped ground your coverage now
Vittert: I think it makes me one of the more unique prime-time anchors in cable news right now. The world looks different
You can talk about Eastern Ukraine and what it means as an American
(but) until you’ve been there and you’ve met the people
and you’ve walked with them and you’ve spent time understanding what all this means
that’s just a totally different perspective to bring to the story.
The Daily: You’ve faced danger and backlash as a reporter
notably when you were attacked by demonstrators at a protest for George Floyd
when I was running with the rebels in Libya
or in Ukraine with the Russian partisans or whatever
and so your defenses and your senses are so alert
The idea that you’d get jumped and attacked in America as a journalist wasn’t something that occurred to me.
It was a combination of (Black Lives Matter) and antifa
CBS and a few other crews put lights on us
so the crowd didn’t quite know what to do after they initially attacked us
You just try to survive and get out.
I think what NewsNation is really dedicated to is you can’t get caught up in the narratives
either way … (not) seeing the story through a left lens or a right lens
but seeing it through the lens of right and wrong
Louis — looking at the story from a right
right Washington sensibility — is a very different way to tell stories.
The Daily: Why did you decide to join NewsNation in 2021
and what stood out to you about the network
Vittert: What person who wants to achieve doesn’t just absolutely jump on that opportunity and be incredibly grateful for it?
I think if you look at my background and my reporting over time
I’ve kind of been known for ruffling feathers on both sides
I think what makes us different is that we don’t exclude an opinion
I think that’s what makes us unique in cable news.
The Daily: How are you feeling about “On Balance” moving to prime time
Does the shift change anything about your show?
I think one of the reasons we got it is because what we were doing is working
and now they’re looking for someone who has had all the experiences I have to tell them what it means.
what advice would you give to young journalists at Northwestern who are about to enter the industry
The flip side of that is I’ve had the most rewarding and incredible career that I could possibly imagine
I’m so grateful to Northwestern and to all the people along the way
especially Angotti who believed in me.
The advice would be to practice your craft
So many people in Washington think Washington is real life
The problems of Washington are not the problems of the rest of America
If you can be different and you can be fair
because there’s really a thirst in America for journalism right now
