Ivan Legarretta never allowed his medical condition to keep him from coaching Lemoore youth baseball
(Photos courtesy of the Legarretta family)
Calif (FOX26) — It started with a father giving his son an experience he never had
58-year-old Ivan Legarretta created the Lemoore Outlaws travel baseball team to coach his son
and they didn't really have time to put me in sports," Legarretta remembered
The Outlaws practiced on softball fields at the Lemoore Sports Complex
where Ivan wanted to teach baseball and life lessons
He had no idea how serious these life lessons would become during the recent pandemic
"We all got sick with COVID pneumonia," he recalled
His heartbeat is going 100 miles an hour.'
"They told my wife I had a 50-50 chance of survival."
but the close call took a toll on Ivan's lungs
which were affected by pulmonary fibrosis lung disease
"I was literally with him last month at [the] Selma High tournament in the dugout
and he had his oxygen tank and his wheelchair," said assistant coach Rob Isquierdo
to get them on the right track," said Ivan's son Beau
Legarretta hoped his perseverance through pain would resonate with the young men he was coaching
they look like they want to give up," he said
"I tell them right there in the dugout
I'm walking around with the oxygen tank
You know I'm not giving up.'"
Ivan's life was saved again when he received a successful double lung transplant
part of it funded by his team selling pozole on New Year's Eve
it's been pretty hard because he's my coach
He's been coaching me since I was little
since I was three," said Ivan's grandson
"Coach Ivan" is already looking forward to his return to the dugout
I don't see no reason why you can't get back on that baseball field."
Legarretta is recovering at the Stanford hospital for the next three months and asking for donations to offset mounting medical cost
