LEOMINSTER — When it comes to Hollywood horror houses
“The Amityville Horror,” the house in “Poltergeist” and “The Upside Down” in “Stranger Things” have nothing on the real-life Obin house on Pleasant Street
single-family brick home at 208 Pleasant St.
the home of Arthur and Joanne Obin became the unofficial symbol and arguably the most photographed image of the devastating flood of Sept
“I say it’s the most photographed spot in Massachusetts,” Mayor Dean J
You just Google the address and there’s hundreds and hundreds of pictures.”
the Obin house is expected to be wiped off the planet for good — not by Mother Nature
Mazzarella said demolition on the home could start as early as Wednesday
On Sept. 11, 2023, heavy rain slammed northern Worcester County in the late afternoon and evening
making many roads in Leominster impassable
There were reports of building foundations being compromised
It was a damaging storm with nearly 10 inches of rain falling in a short time
The water deepened quickly with no place to go
receding to reveal buckled or washed-out roadways
residents had to be rescued from their homes by inflatable rafts
The Obin house was left standing on its exposed foundation
The Obins had to bolt from their home as the soil
concrete and pavement that surrounded their dwelling was carried away in the floodwaters
If it weren't built on a foundation built deep into the ground
the entire house would have been swept downstream into the condominiums behind it
their entire walkway that they had just been standing on collapsed into the ground
Never in their wildest dreams did the Obins
the same home where they raised their only child
would become a grim reminder of the unrelenting wrath of Mother Nature
Panels of the pointed stockade fence that once wrapped around the side yard on Coburn Street has fallen into the abyss below
The front door and front bay window facing Pleasant Street overlooks a 20-foot cliff with cascading water through a culvert and jagged rocks below
You would need a sturdy ladder to climb up to the front door
Long before catching a glimpse of the government order stating “UNSAFE
DO NOT ENTER OR OCCUPY,” plastered on the garage
one would have concluded this on their own
You would notice the fence that seemed to have swallowed up by the ground and the front yard that is nothing but oddly shaped rocks and broken concrete blocks
but you could easily knock on the back door and not be aware of the devastation waiting in front
Andre Obin said the time following the ordeal was “easily the most stressful year” of his parents’ lives
“It took so much out of my parents that they’ll never be 100% back
“But they’re settled and safe and everybody’s healthy
the City of Leominster purchased the home from the Obins as part of a “friendly” eminent domain agreement
The family received $350,000 for the abandoned and unlivable home
which is $100,000 less than its estimated value
Mazzarella said the plan is to raze the house and fix the road and underground drainage
“The big thing is to get that house down before it falls down and then it becomes more expensive to remove,” Mazzarella said
“So all of that has to be done in stages.”
there will be no trace that the house was ever standing there
“We’re going to seed it and stabilize it and then there will just be an open brook,” Mazzarella said
Mazzarella said the flooding caused up to $30 million to $35 million in damage to city infrastructure
LEOMINSTER — While proponents boast that it’s a way for the City of Leominster to “Win Big on Fun,” a proposed racetrack for horses has already caused its share of controversy
Mazzarella is urging that Leominster residents take a breather and relax because the formal proposal for the track
hasn’t even come out of the starting gate yet and a long way from the home stretch
“They’re looking to do racing two weekends a year.”
Billed as “a one-of-a-kind entertainment venue featuring horse racing, festivals, a sports bar and more,” Baystate Racing LLC and Whitney Companies seek to partner with the City of Leominster to transform its capped landfill at the end of Mechanic Street to the east of the Route 2 connector into a “vibrant entertainment destination,” according to www.thefairgroundsleominster.com
While an informational meeting took place for neighbors and abutters on Feb
Mazzarella stresses that the proposal is in the preliminary
conceptual stage and no formal proposal has been filed yet
“Our job right now as elected officials is trying to get information and get it out there to people,” Mazzarella said
“There will also be a peer review process where whatever their project is — whether it’s traffic
care of horses — we have our consultants review the whole thing.”
proposes a project where the goal is “to energize the community
turning an underutilized space into a hub of excitement
fun and opportunity,” according to the partnership’s website
Baystate plans to develop the site with a racetrack
stables and a pavilion to support the venue’s operations
One of the existing buildings will be repurposed into a sports bar with mobile wagering and sports game simulators for gambling
as well as a viewing deck and a full-service restaurant
“When they do this whole casino-online gaming stuff
it’s all attached to racing,” Mazzarella said
This is not the first time a thoroughbred horse-racing facility has been proposed in the north county
Baystate proposed to convert the GAAMHA property at 827 Green St.
This was Baystate's second failed attempt to bring horse racing to Gardner
regulatory and operational oversight as outlined in the Host Community Agreement with Baystate
The city will receive a minimum of $300,000 to $1 million once operational with an annual increase of 2.5% after the third year
with additional payments from gaming revenues and taxes
requiring Baystate to comply with zoning laws and obtain approvals for leasing city property according to the preliminary proposal
The Fairgrounds venue would be “an ideal fit” for Leominster
it will transform the capped landfill on Mechanic Street into a “vibrant entertainment space” that aligns with the city’s goals of land revitalization
“They’re proposing to take a mostly vacant 34,000-square-foot office building and the old
capped landfill and do everything right there,” Mazzarella said
“So they would do two weeks a year on the racing and then the online gaming and restaurants would go in this mostly vacant property.”
The project will be developed in accordance with environmental standards and laws
as no construction will take place on that section of the site
access and safety measures while ensuring the track is available for community use when not in operation
A city-appointed representative will serve on the Racing Oversight Board to ensure horse welfare
and Baystate must provide annual compliance reports
Baystate must also host at least one free community event per year and support local education programs
“My opinion is get the proper information out there.”

LEOMINSTER ― The "Colossal Frosty" has returned to Ringer Street and for now
the weather is allowing the giant snowman to stay in shape
"I try to build the giant one once per winter," explained creator and homeowner Lee Kosiewski
"But conditions and timing are always a factor."
moved to the neighborhood in 2016 and created their first Frosty on Ringer Street in 2017
The couple had previously lived in Lancaster
This year's Frosty is about 12 feet wide and around 10 feet tall
Leominster needs to see at least 8 inches of snow — and sometimes that's not even enough
The giant snowman takes several hours to build using a snowblower
The snowman did not make an appearance the last two years due to the weather and scheduling conflicts
so I get a lot of snow from the side of the road
which has a little road salt incorporated," he said
"That salt mixed together in the snowblower makes the snow bind together."
"Once I can't get the pile any higher with the snowblower
I use a ladder to get up to the top and begin sculpting with a shovel and a rake."
as he and his wife invite the neighborhood to come see the creation and take pictures with Frosty and their dog Gus
"Sometimes Gus and I will look out the window because he hears a truck going by and it's the oil delivery truck stopping to take a picture," he said
"Or the school bus goes by really slow so all of the kids can get a good look
I haven't met anyone who was disappointed."
The weather over the past week has been kind to Frosty
this year's Frosty is his longest-lasting to date
BOSTON —The family of a 20-year-old man who was stabbed to death last year at an apartment complex in Leominster has filed a wrongful death suit against the property’s owners and others
A civil suit filed Thursday in Worcester Superior Court alleges that the ownership
the management and the security services “caused the death of Robert Wright-Day." He was killed the early morning of May 7
the lawsuit includes a count of wrongful death and multiple counts of negligence against Riverside Village Apartments
the management company Schochet Riverside Manager
and security companies ISSM Protective Services and Archer Security Agency
they could have called 911 and they could have got my child out faster
instead of him bleeding to death out there,” Houston
“This could have been fixed with just them following their own policies that they put in place."
Houston called her son “loving” and “a good kid” as she spoke to reporters in the Boston offices of Michael Kelly Injury Lawyers
Wright-Day and friends showed up to Riverside Village Apartments
an apartment complex not far from North Main Street in Leominster
The lawsuit claims that gatherings happened often at the location
which caused residents to bring up noise complaints
The suit further states that the gatherings as a reason for Riverside hiring Archer Security sometime prior to the fatal attack
The company was later absorbed by New Jersey-headquartered ISSM
the company that absorbed Archer Security after the stabbing
Three days after the stabbing
a Fitchburg man was charged with murder and two others were charged with assault and battery in connection
is being held without bail for one count of murder
each face assault and battery charges and are out on bail
said Thursday that he was not aware of the cause of the conflict that resulted in the stabbing
sat beside Houston on Thursday while they wore shirts with Wright-Day's photo printed on them
He said that he had kept in touch with his son every Tuesday before his death
Houston’s suit seeks monetary damages for medical bills
McCarthy said that the lawsuit is not immediately seeking a certain monetary value
“The lawsuit… does nothing for Stacey Houston
in terms of any satisfaction,” McCarthy said
“Robert Day is not going to be walking through her house door
“But we intend to hold all parties accountable
and that is exactly what we're going to do.”
LEOMINSTER ― Not only is the Max original film “The Parenting” expected to scare up a lot of viewers when it premieres Thursday on the paid streaming service
it might make the Plastic City (aka Leominster) the new go-to place for Hollywood to film in Massachusetts
Watch: "The Parenting" trailer (Warning: Strong Language)
Billed as a “hilariously terrifying comedy,” “The Parenting” centers around Rohan and Josh (played by Nik Dodani and Brandon Flynn
wisecracking gay couple ready to take the next step in their budding relationship – introducing each other to their respective parents
featuring a 29-room stucco mansion with columns and massive bay windows
as well as sprawling grounds that includes majestic trees
a quaint pond and an extensive system of walking paths
Standing in for McKinley Fields is Leominster’s own Doyle Community Park and Center estate garden
it appears to be the perfect locale for Rohan and Josh to meet their prospective in-laws
Brian Cox and Edie Falco play Frank and Sharon (Rohan’s parents)
while Dean Norris and Lisa Kudrow play Cliff and Liddy
There’s only one small problem: the house is haunted by the presence of a 400-year-old poltergeist
who has possessed the body and the will of one of the parents
Think “Evil Dead” meets “Meet the Parents”; or “Succession” meets “The Exorcist.”
The film crew came to Leominster in mid-March 2022 to prep the set before filming for three weeks
and wrapping up and breaking down the set four days after that
confirms that the estate at 345 Lindell Ave
Johnson and the crew filmed a wedding reception scene in the grand ballroom of Union Station in Worcester
the finished scene didn’t make the final cut
one brief scene that was filmed in Worcester appears to be still intact

The owners of Schofield Power Equipment on Summer Street claim they were kept in the dark about plans for the property that abuts their building
The business has been using the land to store equipment
“We received a letter the city on Monday (Jan
The city gave us two weeks to agree to its terms to lease the property,” said Shawna Schofield
“It was never their land,” said Mayor Dean Mazzarella in response to a query by the Telegram & Gazette
“They never got permission to use the land
Mazzarella acknowledged the company was sent the letter but pointed out that a sentence prompted the company owners to call the city with questions and concerns
“We have no issue with tweaking the agreement,” Mazzarella said
The back-and-forth has been prominent on social media, with the Schofield Facebook page rife with comments from residents and customers blasting the city
It is part of the Twin Cities Rail Trail project
a biking and walking trail linking Leominster with Fitchburg
The property will be landscaped and serve as a portal to downtown
While the business has been on the property since 1981
the company only had a lease with the railroad during the last few years
after the city surveyed the property in preparation for the purchase
The survey showed the business had encroached on the land
“The trains were still running when we moved in,” Schofield said
adding they landscaped the parcel when the tracks were pulled up
The family attempted to purchase the tract but said the railroad told them it was not for sale
At issue is less than two-tenths of an acre of land
the property the Schofield business now uses
as opposed to the tenth of an acre the city is willing to lease back
That sliver could cost the business $7,000 a year if it opts to sign the city’s contract
but we’re losing accessibility to our property for contractors
The mayor pointed to a commercial parking lot across from the business
Mazzarella said he offered to knock the price of leasing those spaces off the proffered contract
Mazzarella said the city does not want to force anyone out of business
Schofield claims the family was advised to clear out the portion of the property that now belongs to the city or face losing their business license
The contract prohibits the storage of hazardous material on the city-owned portion of the property and also requires the company purchase liability insurance
noting the city spent $137,000 in the last two years and $417,000 over the last decade at the business
“They get more business from the city than any other small businesses in the city.”
the 5-mile rail trail was conceived in 2004 as a way to transform and use the abandoned railroad corridor
Congressman John Oliver secured $4 million in federal funds to build the trail
A series of public hearings followed in 2016
with 2020 seeing the City Council enter into lease agreements with abutters
A ribbon cutting for phase 1 of the project was held in 2022
The timeline offered by the mayor indicates the city did converse with the Schofield family about the plans and revised it to accommodate concerns they expressed
The city bought the tract in August 2023 for $1.2 million
purchasing a total of 3.4 acres from Carter Park on Mill Street to a point 75 feet south of Mechanic Street
the Schofield family claims their attempts to be involved in the project were ignored
“The city did not want us to know what was going on.”
acknowledging the success of their business
said they could be in the market for a new location
the cost of relocating and preparing a property for their business is prohibitive
