Clay Barnett wasn't too concerned at halftime
The Levelland girls basketball team had played about as poorly as it could have — much of it thanks to Estacado's equally-stingy defense — and only trailed by one
The Loboettes just needed a shot — any shot — to go down
Trinity Wafer and Kaylee Penner finally broke the seal
getting Levelland's first field goals of the second half six minutes into the third quarter
Those buckets turned into a 21-6 stretch from Levelland
and the Loboettes pulled away for a crucial 43-30 win over the Matadors on Friday night
"Even when it wasn't looking good," Barnett said
weren't doing the things that we normally do
6-1 district) and Estacado entered Friday's rematch tied with Lubbock-Cooper Liberty for first place in the District 5-4A standings
Getting the victory was paramount in staying in the hunt for the district title
5-2) limited Levelland's open looks and forced plenty of turnovers to take a 15-14 lead into halftime
The Loboettes weren't helping their own cause
Levelland missed seven of its first eight free throws and couldn't knock down 3-pointers when the opportunities were there
"I think we had so much adrenaline," Smith said
Wafer and Penner accounted for eight-straight points to put the Loboettes ahead for good
Smith provided a backbreaker by hitting a 3-pointer 20 seconds into the fourth quarter
That capped a 14-2 run that dimmed the spark in the Matadors
who were looking for their first win over Levelland in more than a decade
lifting each other up as teammates and just playing together," Sanchez said
"That's really all we play for is playing for each other."
despite a 12-of-26 showing from the free-throw line
Levelland can now turn its attention to the next big game on its schedule Tuesday
The team kept itself in the running for the district crown with a rematch against Lubbock-Cooper Liberty on deck
"We obviously want to go in and play our game," Barnett said
"and hopefully take care of business at home."
Liberty is the lone district team to hand the Loboettes a loss
something Smith and Sanchez intend on avenging
"We just second-guessed ourselves," Sanchez said of Liberty's 37-33 win in the first meeting
"We went in there a little nervous not having played them since the summertime
I feel like this next game will definitely be a good game for us
playing as a team and just getting that win to get us district champs."
A 30-year-old Levelland man arrested in connection with a 2020 fatal shooting in Central Lubbock is set to be sentenced Wednesday to 22 years in prison after entering a guilty plea Tuesday morning
Anthony Resendez appeared in court the day jurors were expected to be seated in the 364th District Court to hear his the trial

Harper could be seen breaking away from the fight and running away across Avenue Q

Estacado football coach Eric Ward delivered a message of playing "for your brother." As it turned out
an actual pair of brothers helped spark a comeback win
Cedric Ross ran for two touchdowns and Bobby Ross led a renewed defensive effort as the Matadors rallied to beat Levelland 28-23 in the district opener Thursday at Lowrey Field
There were three lead changes in the second half
with Cedric Ross scoring the go-ahead TD with 1:23 to play
1-0 district) has won consecutive games after snapping a four-game losing skid
keep playing our game and let's go one play at a time," Ward said
Play for your brother … and they did exactly that
Cedric Ross scored Estacado's first TD after returning his brother's fumble in the opening quarter
He found the end zone in more conventional ways after halftime
The first came after a Bobby Ross sack forced a turnover on downs to start the third quarter
Cedric Ross completed a 53-yard TD run by spinning out of two tackle attempts near the goal line
The touchdown brought the Matadors within one score and jolted life into the team
Another electric run of 38 yards put Estacado in front late
Ross came up with another fourth-down sack to end Levelland's final drive and seal the victory
Bobby Ross showed his defensive prowess with five tackles for loss
we've all done said that Bobby's a defensive player," Cedric Ross said
Levelland can't capitalize on strong startLevelland built a 16-6 lead after a touchdown just before halftime
Lobos coach Lyle Leong felt good about their position
0-1) netted 2 rushing yards in the second half
thanks in part to eight tackles behind the line of scrimmage for Estacado
the Lobos controlled possession with two drives longer than six minutes
That included a 15-play drive to start the fourth quarter that culminated in Ethan Salazar's 1-yard sneak
Levelland led by one but couldn't contain Cedric Ross on the ensuing possession
"They've just got some playmakers," Leong said
That's what it came down to is Cedric making plays
He's a top 300 (college recruit) kid for a reason
Things looked bleak for the Matadors before the late resurgence
Ward hopes the team has turned a corner after starting 1-4 in his debut season
Estacado will look to continue its momentum next week at Perryton
"We've still got to go out there and we've got to put in the effort in practice," Ward said
we celebrate it and then we have short-term memory and get back to work
But it's definitely something to build off of."

EST — Cedric Ross 21 fumble return (run failed)

The Loboettes defeated the Lake View Maidens on Tuesday 28-8 in San Angelo
They then turned around beating Estacado on the road 20-1 on Friday
Madilyn Barrientes drove in 7 runs against Lake View and then 5 runs on three hits against Estacado to keep the bats hot for Levelland
like Barrientes has had a hot bat the last two games
as well as dishing it out on the mound with two strikeouts against Lake View and three against Estacado
the Loboettes take on Big Spring and look for a revenge win against Snyder who beat them by two runs
Eric Ward had work to do when moving to the outside at Texas Tech
but over-the-shoulder catches weren't his forte
He ended up getting help from one of the Red Raiders' best
It wasn't the last time Ward followed a path similar to Lyle Leong's
The former Tech stars became high school head coaches
and coincidence placed them in the same district when Estacado hired Ward in July
The pair reunited when Leong's Levelland Lobos met the Matadors on Thursday
who finished his collegiate career with one fewer touchdown catch than Leong
got a semblance of friendly payback with Estacado's 28-23 victory to start league play
Brotherly loveThe game was an opportunity to reminisce on old times
Ward recalled working with Leong as the latter's freshman backup in 2010
Ward credits the elder statesman for a career that left him in the top six of Tech's catches
His 31 TD receptions are only behind Leong (32) and Michael Crabtree (41)
Lyle does have one more touchdown than me," Ward said
"but I went home and I caught 255 receptions
He was a senior and I was a redshirt freshman
He took time after practice to teach me how to catch over the shoulder
That means a lot because I would've never knew
so that showed you what kind of character he has."
He said Ward's desire to improve matched his athletic ability
"He did a lot of things that other receivers can't do," Leong said
and his willingness to learn made him even better
honored to get to watch him grow up in a sense."
Leong said the Estacado coach had as much of an impact on his life
"I know if I wasn't ready he'd step in and I'd never get to play again
Leong is in his fourth season at Levelland and landed on the "40 under 40" coaches list in the summer edition of Dave Campbell's Texas Football
0-1) already have their most wins under Leong and held a 10-point lead over district-favorite Estacado at halftime
Pigskin Prep projects the teams to finish first and second
A district title would be quite an accomplishment for Ward
1-0) have won consecutive games after a difficult start
Leong wouldn't be too upset if Estacado kept it going
"It was an honor to get to coach against him
The next Red Raider to enter coaching might already be out of school
Whether it's another former receiver remains to be seen
but Ward feels the Tech grad will be well-prepared
"Tech has made such an impact on student-athletes wanting to coach," Ward said
just tell them to find me because I love Tech
I bleed red and black — and blue and black
I'm all about getting kids started in coaching because I think this is a way to stay as close to the game as possible."

Strong straight-line winds — not a tornado — were responsible for the damage in Levelland
according to meteorologist Gary Skwira with the National Weather Service in Lubbock
"That same storm went on to produce a 95 mph wind gust when it went through the West Texas Mesonet site just northeast of Tahoka an hour or two later," Skwira said
"We've heard about a lot of center pivots that were flipped over and blown around
and they had a lot of wind and wind-driven hail
I'm sure; crops that were trying to come up were probably severely damaged."
A team from the National Weather Service was on the ground Wednesday surveying the damage in Hockley County
including maintaining a NOAA Weather Radio to get early warning
One severe thunderstorm warning issued after midnight was for Bailey and Cochran counties through 1 a.m.

LEVELLAND - Irma Reyes said she woke up to the sound of rain and the lights flickering in her Levelland trailer home around 1:30 a.m
Then she heard and felt the 100-plus-mph winds
The roof of her home was blown clean off and landed in her neighbor's yard
Then Reyes said she could hear people yelling across the street
but didn't know what was happening and didn't even have time to seek better shelter
describing her personal experience from the overnight line of severe thunderstorms that the weather service confirmed brought wind gusts greater than 100 mph and left at least eight people injured around Levelland and Hockley County
The city of Levelland stated in its official emergency declaration news release that it had little advance warning ahead of the overnight storm
Reyes said the only warning she noticed was from a storm that hit the city earlier Tuesday that produced ping pong- to baseball-size hail within the city
with areas 10 miles north seeing hail around 5 inches in size
the National Weather Service had warned as early as Tuesday that much of the South Plains
faced an enhanced risk for severe thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon into the evening
That included a tornado watch for most of the South Plains that had expired at 9 p.m
another line of thunderstorms was developing along the Texas-New Mexico border northwest of the South Plains
prompting the National Weather Service to issue a series of severe thunderstorm warnings as the storm progressed southeast through the region
Those warnings are broadcast through the NWS social media platforms as well as on weather radios and through local media outlets
According to the Lubbock National Weather Service preliminary findings report
the storm only lasted 10 minutes in Levelland before it continued southeast
impacting the city of Tahoka a few hours later
8 injured, over 100 mph winds attributed to Wednesday night storm in Levelland, Tahoka
many in the Levelland community were convinced a tornado had hit the city
but the NWS said it was a supercell that turned into a bow echo storm that produced the strong winds
said a bow echo is a line of storms with strong leading winds that form the storms into the shape of a bow
"At the tip of that line of storms are where the strongest
most intense winds are and that's really what happened on Tuesday night
the winds in Levelland measured between 110 and 120 mph
and the winds in Tahoka measured between 90 and 100 mph
Those windspeeds match those of an EF 2 and EF 1 tornado
but these winds — called straight-line winds — differ from those associated with tornados
"We saw no indication that there was a rotation in the storm that would produce a tornado," Ziebell said
Dig Deeper: What is the deadliest tornado in West Texas? Heres is what you need to know.
Ziebell said the NWS started issuing warnings about the storm when it reached Bailey County — a county northwest of Hockley County
many people were already in bed or about to go to bed
"If most people are already going into bed or asleep at that point
the only way that they're going to hear that is with a weather radio alarm going off," Ziebell said
"Or if we have a high-end severe thunderstorm warning with winds of 80 miles an hour more than their cell phones will alert them to that."
The storm was producing regular wind speeds of 70 mph — 10 mph below the threshold to issue a Weather Emergency Alert to people's phones
Ziebell said it may have prevented many more injuries than if the storm had struck during the daytime
"If that storm hit Levelland in the middle of the day
I think the probability would have been very high there would have been a lot more injuries or perhaps fatalities with all the trees and power poles coming down," Ziebell said
How to stay safe in this type of storm.Bow echoes and straight-line wind events are not uncommon during spring severe weather season on the South Plains
Ziebell said that since the cities and towns within the region are so spread out
the storms normally don't cause much damage
If an individual is caught in this type of weather
Ziebell said they should treat it as if it were a tornado and follow tornado safety tips by getting to the interior portion of the building or the basement
Related Tornado safety tips to prepare for before, after a tornado in Lubbock, Texas
Ziebell also advised people to look at weather app radars before going to bed to be aware of what might happen overnight and to use a weather radio
"When the power goes out or a cell phone tower goes down
you will still get the weather radio most times."
