Here is the all-DeSoto County softball team selections:
Coach of The Year – Nicki Whitten – Hernando
Following its three-game series victory over Lewisburg Saturday night
Hernando softball released the schedule for the North Half championship series with Madison Central
The teams square off first at Madison Central on Wednesday for game one
then come to Hernando on Thursday for game two
will be back at Madison Central on Friday night
LOCK HAVEN — As Lewisburg junior Baylee Espinosa was within the final 20 meters of the finish line in the 1,600 on Saturday at the Lock Haven High School Classic
the Green Dragon saw the time on the clock
Each second seemed to drag on as she got closer and closer: 4:51.00 … 4:52.00 … 4:53.00…
Espinosa thought she was going to finally break her mother’s long-time record at Lewisburg which has stood since 2003
But that digit changed as she crossed the finish line
and Espinosa came just shy of making school history
“As I crossed the (finish) line I was like ‘I’m gonna get it
I’m gonna get it’ and then I saw the clock change and I was like ‘ahh
there’s no way,'” Espinosa said with a laugh
Espinosa ran a time of 4:54.79 on Saturday in the 1,600 and while it didn’t break the school record
it did set a meet record for the Lock Haven High School Classic
“To set the meet record here in my first year here
She knows she’s only a junior and has a lot more track to run to chase the mark of Ashleigh Wetzel
who would go on to run track and field at Vanderbilt after competing at Lewisburg in high school
that was really frustrating,” Espinosa said of the time
“I just saw it and I was like ‘it’s going to be a measly point of a second,’ but that’s OK.”
Espinosa is glad to be back on the track and continuing to drop significant time meet after meet
Espinosa faced some adversity battling anemia and tendonitis and had to build up from the beginning of the season
She started the seeing running the 1,600 with a time in the 5:50s
and she’s dropped a minute off her time and isn’t showing any signs of slowing down either
“Usually indoor season I’m at the height of my peak
but coming into the season and slowly building
I was making these huge jumps,” Espinosa said
It made me believe that it’s possible that I could have another big jump today.”
She did precisely that by running a 4:54.79
Espinosa has beaten every record her mom set at Lewisburg except for the 1,600 and it’s something the two joke about routinely
“I have her record in everything else
but in the mile she’s like ‘I still got you’ and it’s like ‘for now,” Espinosa said with a smile
“She knows I’ve been coming for her for a while
but had some unfortunate illnesses at the end of the year
I thought I was going to get it this year.”
Espinosa noted that she entered the event with some nerves
Some of that can be chalked up to competing at the Lock Haven High School Classic for the first time in her career and running on the track for the first time ever
“I think there was a lot going into the day
I didn’t feel almost in the right mindset because I compared myself a lot to others and got into a negative headspace,” Espinosa said
I looked around and saw the trees and said no matter what happens today
it’s still going to be a great day and memorable.”
Setting a meet record was definitely a memorable day for the Green Dragon
running a sub-5 minute time on a chilly and rainy afternoon at Lock Haven on Saturday helped boost Espinosa’s confidence as the district championships are on the horizon
“It gives me quite a bit of confidence
… The mile’s one event I crown as it’s just so perfect and great,” Espinosa said
“The last few times I ran it were unfortunate situations for me
but I’m hoping I can come in and do right things I need to do and go out there (and win).”

LEWISBURG, WV (LOOTPRESS) – In the early hours of April 30, 2025, a man was arrested after damaging city property outside Lewisburg City Hall while under the influence of alcohol.
According to Cpl. S.M. Simmons of the Lewisburg Police Department, Sgt. Doss of the Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Office initially observed the suspect, identified as Bishop Poe, around 2:00 a.m., reportedly destroying property in front of City Hall at 942 West Washington Street.
Upon arrival, Cpl. Simmons noted Poe had visible signs of intoxication, including glossy eyes, slurred speech, the smell of alcohol, and possession of a Hawk Knob hard cider. Surveillance footage confirmed that Poe had been sitting at the public piano outside City Hall for approximately two hours while drinking before becoming aggressive.
Poe was seen on camera toppling a city-owned metal trash can, scattering its contents on the sidewalk, and violently smashing a city-owned piano chair, valued at $150, by lifting it overhead and slamming it onto the pavement. He also kicked the piano and struck a lantern above.
Poe was arrested and charged with destruction of property, public intoxication, disorderly conduct, and littering. He was processed and transported to the Southern Regional Jail by Sgt. Doss.

While the Hernando High School softball team has been running through the schedule to a Region 1-7A championship and top seed from the region in the postseason playoffs
coach Caleb Gilbert’s Lewisburg Lady Patriots made a strong statement Thursday saying
“Don’t forget about us when it counts.”
Lewisburg’s 10-8 victory over county rival Hernando Thursday night put the Lady Patriots within one win of advancing to the MHSAA 7A North Half championship and a shot at a state championship visit to Hattiesburg.
Gilbert said after the game some clean up work needed to be done defensively ahead of Friday’s game two at Lewisburg
but the Lady Patriots needed to match Hernando’s offensive threat and his team did just that.
Anna Etter with her two home runs and four RBIs did major damage to Hernando
Etter blasted a three-run round tripper in the top of the third inning that gave the Lady Patriots a 4-1 lead at the time. She later provided the game-tying run in the seventh inning
sending a softball over the right field fence that knotted the contest up at 8-8.
“Her timing and her pitch selection is just so good
she doesn’t swing and miss a lot,” Gilbert said
With a total of four RBIs against Hernando Thursday night
Etter became the school’s all-time career RBI leader.
Etter was not the only Lady Patriot circling the bases Thursday night
as Kara Walker and Makayla Johnson also homered.
As far as last year’s state 7A runner up was concerned
Hernando got a roundtripper from Callie Desmond
Hayden Hodge and Bella Adams all hit doubles in the loss.
After both teams opened with single runs in the second
Lewisburg broke out with a three-run third frame
But Hernando answered with a five-run third inning that seemed to wrest away control of the contest.
The big inning was fueled by Adams’ run-scoring double
Lewisburg would score solo runs in the fourth and sixth innings
but Hernando would plate a pair of runs in the sixth inning to lead 8-6 heading into the seventh.
Kara Walker and Etter then greeted Hernando pitcher Olivia Skinner in the seventh with back-to-back homers to tie the game and force extra innings
With the international extra-inning softball rule
Lewisburg started the frame with Lindey Willhite on second base
Willhite would score the lead run on a single from Leona-Klaire Stokes
who would later come home herself on a single from Lexi Edmiston
it was up to pitcher Ella Abrams to finish the job
Abrams and the Lady Patriots defense set Hernando down in order to win
“Ella was so clutch,” Gilbert said about his starting pitcher
“We know their offense is good and we know they are going to score some runs
But she is poised to come out and be a senior and continue to give us a chance to win.”
Macie Dever Boaz also scored twice and Kaitlyn Gentry finished with three hits for the night
Kate Johnson opened the game in the circle for Hernando and pitched three innings
allowing four runs on four hits and throwing two strikeouts
Skinner relieved Johnson in the fourth once Hernando had its five-run outburst and pitched five innings
allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits and fanning two.

The Lewisburg-Germantown (Madison) MHSAA 7A softball playoff series heads to a game three after the Lady Mavs came away with a 2-1 victory in eight innings Thursday night
The Germantown win came one night after Bailee Davis homered in the top of the seventh Wednesday to send game one into extra innings and a single by Cambell Kent scored Lindey Willhite to win the game in eight innings.
It’s been what you might expect from a playoff series between two extremely talented teams.
“The experience we have offensively and the pitching they have just made it 14 innings where we couldn’t figure it out,” said Lewisburg first-year coach Caleb Gilbert
“I think it’s just two really equal to equal teams.”
Thursday’s contest was a strong defensive and pitching duel between Lexi Edmiston of Lewisburg and Germantown’s Presly Cutrer and Mackenzie Donnell
allowing just one hit and nine strikeouts over eight innings
but she also hit three batters. Donnell in particular was stellar for the Lady Mavs with one hit and two strikeouts over five innings.
the “runner on second” rule put J Ferguson on second to start the Germantown eighth
Ferguson scored the first run of the game on a single by Maggie Lindley
followed by what became the winning run when Breely Hill came home on a sacrifice fly.
a Kara Walker single to center scored Leona-Klaire Stokes to get Lewisburg within 2-1
Ella Abrams hit into a ground ball double play that ended the contest in favor of the Lady Mavs.
Lewisburg was also aided by five Germantown errors
Walker had the only multi-hit night for the Lady Patriots.
Gilbert said striking first will be a big key to whoever wins game three.
“We’ve got to get our leadoff hitter on base,” he said
“I think we did that in the first and in the eighth with the international tiebreaker
