Point Reyes is the windiest place on the Pacific Coast and the second foggiest place on the North American continent frequently reduce visibility to hundreds of feet pose a threat to each ship entering or leaving San Francisco Bay The historic Point Reyes Lighthouse warned mariners of danger for more than a hundred years was retired from service in 1975 when the U.S They then transferred ownership of the lighthouse to the National Park Service which has taken on the job of preserving this fine specimen of our heritage All lighthouses in the United States are now automated because it is cheaper to let electronics do the work Many decommissioned lighthouses were transformed into restaurants The lighthouse at Point Reyes National Seashore is now a museum piece the craftsmanship and the beauty of the lighthouse are actively preserved Top of Page The Point Reyes Lighthouse lens and mechanism were constructed in France in 1867 glass prisms and housing for the lighthouse were shipped on a steamer around the tip of South America to San Francisco The parts from France and the parts for the cast iron tower were transferred to a second ship which then sailed to a landing on Drakes Bay The parts were loaded onto ox-drawn carts and hauled three miles over the headlands to near the tip of Point Reyes an area had been blasted with dynamite to clear a level spot for the lighthouse the lighthouse had to be situated below the characteristic high fog It took six weeks to lower the materials from the top of the cliff to the lighthouse platform and construct the lighthouse after many years of tedious political pressure transport of materials and difficult construction the Point Reyes Light first shone on December 1 it is a National Historic Landmark and can be viewed from the Chimney Rock Trail The lens in the Point Reyes Lighthouse is a "first order" Fresnel (fray-nel) lens Augustin Jean Fresnel of France revolutionized optics theories with his new lens design in 1823 lighthouses used mirrors to reflect light out to sea The most effective lighthouses could only be seen eight to twelve miles away the brightest lighthouses could be seen all the way to the horizon The Fresnel lens intensifies the light by bending (or refracting) and magnifying the source light through glass prisms into concentrated beams The Point Reyes lens is divided into twenty-four vertical panels which direct the light into twenty-four individual beams radiating out over the ocean surface like the spokes of a giant wagon wheel A weight and gears similar to those in a grandfather clock rotate the 6000-pound lens at a constant speed of one revolution every two minutes This rotation made the beams sweep around the horizon and created the Point Reyes Lighthouse's signature pattern of one flash every five seconds Keeping the lighthouse in working condition was a twenty-four hour job The light was lit only between sunset and sunrise The head keeper and three assistants shared the load in four six-hour shifts a keeper walked down the wooden stairs to light the oil lamp which was attached to the clockwork mechanism by a hemp rope The earth's gravity would then pull the weight The clockwork mechanism was built to provide resistance so that it would take two hours and twenty minutes for the weight to descend the 17 feet And as the weight descended and the clockwork mechanism's gears spun the Fresnel lens would turn so that the light appeared to flash every five seconds In addition to winding the clockwork mechanism every two-hours and twenty minutes throughout the night the keeper had to keep the lamp wicks trimmed so that the light would burn steadily and efficiently Daytime duties for the keepers included cleaning the lens stoking the steam-powered fog signal and making necessary repairs the keeper trudged back up the wooden staircase Sometimes the winds were so strong that he had to crawl on his hands and knees to keep from being knocked down The highest wind speed recorded at Point Reyes was 133 mph fog and isolation at Point Reyes made this an undesirable post one keeper stayed for about twenty-four years a testament to his devotion and love of Point Reyes Lighthouse Keepers' Log - January 21, 1888 through November 30, 1888 The historic Point Reyes Lighthouse served mariners for 105 years before it was replaced during which the Point Reyes Peninsula and the lighthouse moved north 18 feet in less than one minute The only damage to the lighthouse was that the lens slipped off its tracks The lighthouse keepers quickly effected repairs and by the evening of the eighteenth the lighthouse was once again in working order The earthquake occurred at 5:12 am and the lighthouse was scheduled to be shut down for regular daytime maintenance at 5:25 am Although the earthquake caused much devastation and disruption elsewhere the Point Reyes Lighthouse was essentially only off-line for thirteen minutes The National Park Service is now responsible for the maintenance of the lighthouse just as lighthouse keepers did in days gone by the light can be preserved for future generations—to teach visitors of maritime history and of the people who worked the light Visit the Point Reyes Lighthouse Download The Historic Point Reyes Lighthouse brochure. However, I was curious about Disney Cruise Line’s newest private destination which promised a fresh take on the Disney island experience.  I found an affordable 3-night cruise from Fort Lauderdale calling at Lighthouse Point before disembarking in San Juan I was not only excited to explore the new destination but also eager to share the magic of Disney cruises that I grew up loving with my fiancée.  and I had the chance to visit a few months after its debut The brand-new port of call offers something for everyone from adult escapes to kid-friendly splash zones I was impressed by the destination's commitment to highlighting Bahamian culture and its natural beauty after reflecting on my few short hours ashore I realized a few things I'd do differently on my next visit.  I knew we'd have to make the dreaded walk down the long pier I wasn't fully prepared for how far it stretched from the ship to the island which made it far more bearable than if the sun had been beating down on us relentlessly.  Still, there was no shade along the way. Though much smaller, the pier at Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay has a little shade provided by colorful umbrellas trams are available for those who don't want to walk to the island those with mobility issues can only use trams at Lighthouse Point.  I can imagine how difficult it must have been for parents with young children to make the trek from the ship to the island there are no places to sit and catch your breath it's essential to come prepared with water to stay hydrated during your walk especially if it's a scorching hot day with minimal wind.  I assumed we'd be steps from the beach and other amenities after walking down the pier we were greeted by a tram to transport us to the main area of the destination While the tram ride was quick and convenient at just around five minutes the added time and effort made it challenging to seamlessly navigate the island.  and finally arriving at Lighthouse Point felt like a lot—and my fiancée and I were traveling alone I cannot imagine how much more challenging and time-consuming it would have been with young children or elderly family members in tow.  While the pier and tram aren't deterring factors for visiting Lighthouse Point the layout requires additional planning to maximize your time ashore instead of assuming you'll be soaking up the sand within fifteen or twenty minutes after disembarking give yourself extra time and adjust your expectations accordingly.  Read more: What it's really like in a $500-a-night, 185-square-foot stateroom on a Disney Cruise Like at the Disney theme parks character meet-and-greets are popular activities on Disney cruises especially when ashore at private destinations our waitress told us the best way to avoid crowds during lunch was to eat at True-True Too BBQ or Serenity Bay BBQ Because characters make appearances at True-True and it's the closest dining pavilion to popular family-friendly amenities like Triton's Trumpet Stage we decided to walk through True-True to see how crowded it was we noticed a long line forming to meet Mickey even though he wasn’t scheduled to appear for another ten minutes If meeting characters is on your must-do list at Lookout Cay be prepared to line up early to avoid the crowds and maximize your time with the characters Read more: Should you go to a theme park before or after your cruise from Florida? Lighthouse Point offers a window into the rich culture and hospitality of the Bahamas The architecture pays tribute to the beauty of the archipelago and other designs created by Bahamian artists are integrated into the various spaces around the destination.  Guests who want to learn more about Bahamian culture should visit the Goombay Cultural Center the arts and cultural pavilion hosts special programs where local artists and performers showcase traditional Bahamian music providing opportunities to immerse yourself in the island's heritage and gain a deeper understanding of the culture that makes the Bahamas unique.  There's also a store called Treasures of Eleuthera that offers handcrafted goods made by local artisans While you'll find plenty of Lookout Cay-exclusive merchandise in the Disney shops this is the perfect place to pick up a one-of-a-kind souvenir!  Read more: 8 things Disney Cruise Line does backwards we didn't hesitate to make our way to the gangway as soon as the all-clear was given Once the tram dropped us off at the Goombay Cultural Center we started walking in the general direction of Serenity Bay the adults-only beach at Lighthouse Point.  When we stumbled upon a stretch of beach nearly empty except for a few adults, we decided to stop since it seemed like the perfect place to unwind. Because there weren't any children around, we assumed we had made it to Serenity Bay; however, when families with children started to roll in a little bit after our arrival, we discovered we hadn't quite made it to the adults-only beach.  As we were comfortable and there weren't enough children to bother us I wish we had ventured to Serenity Bay just to see what set it apart from the family-friendly beaches—if anything only leaving when we were ready to return to the ship thanks to the adults-only BBQ pavilion Elizabeth graduated from New York University's Arthur L she traveled frequently with her family and fell in love with cruising after sailing on the Oasis of the Seas during her freshman year of high school Having sailed on over 30 cruises across different lines she loves sharing her insight and expertise on all things cruising Corcoran and the Corcoran logos are trademarks of Corcoran Group LLC The Corcoran® System is comprised of company owned offices which are owned by a subsidiary of Anywhere Real Estate Inc and franchised offices which are independently owned and operated The Corcoran System fully supports the principles of the Fair Housing Act and the Equal Opportunity Act All opinions and views are of the advertiser and do not reflect the same of WFTS We're giving you an inside look at Disney Cruise Line’s newest island destination in the Bahamas - Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point For more information, visit DisneyCruiseLine.com Report a typo local lifestyle show focused on providing our audience with informative It features a variety of community organizations It is a marketing-friendly program dedicated to offering businesses the opportunity to showcase their company/products reach potential customers and gain results Grow Your Business With Us!For Sponsor Information:TBMorningBlend@wfts.com – A vigil was held on Sunday to honor the life of South Florida barber Bernabe Rodriguez Leer en español The 41-year old was shot Wednesday in what investigators are calling a domestic disturbance in the 2600 block of Northeast 49th Street in Lighthouse Point A nearby neighbor captured cellphone video showing Rodriguez on a stretcher before being transported to an area hospital Additional video showed a woman in handcuffs being escorted by a deputy to a patrol car there have been a number of tributes honoring the father of two posted to social media a young entrepreneur and a staple in the barber community Investigators plan to turn the case over to the State Attorney’s Office for review Samiar Nefzi joined the Local 10 News team in August of 2023 Copyright © 2025 Local10.com is published by WPLG INC., a Berkshire Hathaway company. Mitti Hicks•Sep 23 Bahamian culture is what takes center stage at Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point.  Castaway Cay draws inspiration from a fictional 1920s shipwreck while Disney Lookout Cay celebrates a real place and people This 900-acre tropical escape highlights Bahamian culture and natural beauty in its authentic form “It’s a one-of-kind destination,” Joey Gaskins Public Affairs Director of the Bahamas and Caribbean for DCL “I can’t think of another destination in the Bahamas that so wraps in Bahamian artistry and creativity.”  Eleuthera is an incredibly stunning thin island in the Bahamas archipelago Disney Imagineers used Eleuthera’s innate landscape as the starting point for the designs throughout the destination they are immediately welcomed into Eleuthera’s motif Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point has a blush-sand shoreline and blue waters that glisten brighter in the sun Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse celebrates Bahamian culture in a way that DCL hasn’t done before and lifestyle are woven into the immersive experiences and adventures available at Disney Lookout Cay Disney commissioned eight local Bahamian artists to create paintings “As an artist and someone that lives in Eleuthera  […] I really wanted to showcase what my island offers,” says Artist Edrin Symonette whose sculptures and paintings at Dinsey Lookout Cay were inspired by nature “Eleuthera is known for three things and some of the sweetest pineapples that you will possibly eat in your life.”  there’s no better way to explore than with your taste buds Cruisers can enjoy Bahamian-inspired dishes like plantains and lime-marinated grilled snapper at True-True Junkanoo-inspired backdrops featuring iconic Disney characters offer the perfect photo spot for guests at Disney Lookout Cay on Eleuthera in The Bahamas There’s something for everyone to do at Disney Lookout Cay There is snorkeling and a nature trail for walking or biking Rush Out and Gush Out Water Play is for guests of all ages Serenity Bay is an adults-only area where cruisers 18 and over can relax by the water in shaded seating Cabanas are available for rent to accommodate your travel party with walkway beach access Sensational Smoothies serves tasty frozen specialty drinks to keep cool Bahamian artists have original artwork for purchase at the Treasures of Eleuthera Disney T’ings has clothes and accessories by local fashion designer Theodore Elyett we have partnered with The Bahamian community to introduce countless families to this beautiful island nation,” Sharon Siskie senior vice president and general manager of Disney Cruise Line “With the addition of Disney Lookout Cay we are offering a brand-new way for our guests to experience the stunning beauty and colorful artistry of The Bahamas with a special touch of Disney magic.” Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point is a featured port of call on various sailings to the Bahamas and Caribbean aboard the Disney Magic a free daily newsletter that features the best of travel and guides to the cities you love from a new point of view — yours you agree to our terms of service and privacy policy Queen Elizabeth Once Stepped In To Prevent Snoop Dogg From Being Banned From The UK United Airlines Flight Attendant's Armrest Announcement Sparks Social Media Frenzy ‘Basketball Wives’ Star Mehgan James Speaks Out About Popular Bahamas Island With Flesh-Eating Bacteria After Friend Loses Leg Chaos Erupts After Ethiopian Airlines Passenger Forced To Give Up Seat For Minister Paramount+'s 'MobLand' has rapidly garnered a wide audience thanks to its fascinating characters and gorgeous scenic backdrops A 27-year-old Chinese student living in Japan was rescued twice from Mount Fuji within days – the second time after reascending for his phone The Haifeng is Taiwan’s first luxury dessert-themed train It redefines the afternoon tea experience with some Michelin-starred desserts is taking a step towards opening its doors to international travelers discovering these dishes is recognizing that the rice you're eating in Louisiana has a cousin in Lagos We put the word island in quotes, because Lookout Cay isn’t a separate island on its own, as Disney’s other private port, Castaway Cay. Instead Lookout Cay is 110 acres at the southern end of the Bahamian island of Eleuthera (Eleuthera is better known in travel circles for luxury resorts in the north and middle part of the island) Disney Magic docked at Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) In its agreement with the Bahamas for the land Disney agreed to develop only 20% of the property for low density use and to build the property in a sustainable manner Local Bahamians are also allowed to visit Lookout Cay on a day pass basis (although with the population of Eleuthera concentrated at the other end of the island Disney is not expecting a huge influx; Community Days for island residents are being planned) People taking photos at the Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point photo opp stop (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) I spent about seven hours at Lookout Cay on the line’s maiden voyage, a three-day preview sailing from Fort Lauderdale on Disney Magic The ship -- Disney's original -- sailed with 2,400 guests with about 30% of the people onboard consisting of media Daisy Duck in Junkanoo costume at Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) It wasn’t nearly enough time to do everything – and not quite everything is ready – but I was able to get a good feel of what Disney is trying to accomplish: a more authentic immersion into the culture of the Bahamas Here’s what you need to know about Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point – with plenty of photos Family beach at Lookout Cay (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) All those tourist photos you've seen of the Bahamas with endless white sand and turquoise water that looks fake the beach at Lookout Cay is more like a long shoreline than a protected cove Loungers and umbrellas are back a bit from the water which means your kids will have endless beaches to play on We saw some parents dragging their loungers down into the water so they could watch their kids at closer range was the perfect temperature for swimming and dipping The beach has lifeguards but there is no drink or food service right down near the water This means you'll definitely want to plan ahead for hydration and mealtime (more on the water situation later) For passengers used to the closer set up at Castaway Cay it will take a while to get used to how spread out the Lookout Cay beach is Think of it more like an Atlantic shoreline beach that you'd find in Florida or the U.S. to protect the reef systems that surround the island Pier on Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Ted Sickler) The pier here in Lookout Cay is too narrow to safety run trams Pier on Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) People with mobility issues or with children too young to walk can reserve a small golf cart at Guest Services to take them to the island the golf carts will be running back and forth and families who have a child in mid-meltdown will be able to flag one down is for the majority of guests to walk the pier A water station or two would also be helpful We wondered if the exposed pier would make it difficult for ships to dock during windy days We do know that Lookout Cay is becoming a centerpiece for Disney itineraries Some sailings will go to either Lookout Cay or Castaway Cay some will go to both and one itinerary even visits Lookout Cay twice in one trip I didn't see any; it was more the adults whining about the long walk than kids Cool towels at pier on Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) Never have I been so happy to get a cold towel when approaching the ship as in Lookout Cay Tram at Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) When you get to the end of the pier and walk through security most people -- except those who book the family cabanas at Mabrika Cove -- still have a tram ride to the main site Last Chance souvenir stand at Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) There's a shaded waiting area for the trams where people can line up; expect crowds at peak hours There's also a small souvenir stand here where you can pick up some Lookout Cay merch and perhaps more importantly -- sunscreen Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) The tram ride to the main area of Lookout Cay takes about 15 minutes; it's not walkable you hear a small introduction to the island through Bahamian children Lookout Cay is all about the rich local culture of the Bahamas The idea is to get visitors excited about the Bahamas and pick up a few facts about Eleuthera even if families are focused mainly on having a great beach day Wagons and strollers at Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) there are a handful of free wagons and strollers for use so they will likely get quite hot in the sun Map of Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) Be warned that the signage at Lookout Cay has yet to really be developed It was hard to find your way around once you got to the main area and the twisting nature of the paths meant that it wasn't always clear how to get from one area to another but it shows the entire site and not really the area where all the main things are located Hopefully this will be something that Disney will fix (or hand out maps to people as they arrive off the trams) Junkanoo at Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) One of the absolute highlights of Lookout Cay for me was the Junkanoo parade and party Junkanoo is the native celebration of the Bahamas where art costumes and more are brought to the forefront Disney worked with the Bahamas National Junkanoo Committee to make sure the experience was authentic as it could be The parade -- called RUSH: A Junkanoo Celebration -- was held twice during the day on our visit at the specially designed Goombay Cultural Center You could hear the music of the costumed participants long before they showed up It reminded me quite a bit of the Mardi Gras Indians in New Orleans and the second line clubs that city has It's not a party without Disney's Fab Four Mickey and Donald in Bahamian outfits at Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) The characters have special Bahamian costumes designed by Eleuthera fashion designer Theodore Elyett Sealy Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Beach (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) The buildings on Lookout Cay have significance too All were influenced by the natural environment of Eleuthera and the Bahamas with the tops of the buildings swirling like seashell patterns Junkanoo crafts at Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) The Goombay Cultural Center also hosted arts and crafts sessions before the Junkanoo performances where people could make their own crowns and headdresses The activity is a nice break from the heat of the day "They got it right," the co-director of the National Junkanoo Committee Andrew Pinder told the media Even if you're just at the island to swim and have fun please take time to go bring your kids to see it Disney characters make an appearance at Lookout Cay's other signature event and then a few games that people are encouraged to join An old-fashioned limbo contest with the characters started things off and got everyone in the mood Pluto greeted people going under with high fives and hugs Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Ted Sickler) This is no ordinary guest -- he played Tangled character Flynn Rider at Rapunzel's Royal Table dinner show If you miss the beach bash -- it was held twice -- you could also line up for some character appearances There were no characters at the pier greeting you so you do have to make an effort to go one of the events if you want a photo op True True Too BBQ Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) There are three restaurants and four bars in the main area of Lookout Cay The True True BBQ and True True Too BBQ are open to all while the Serenity Bay adults-only area also has a place to eat the line made sure to include the Castaway Cay favorites They also added a few new dishes inspired by the Bahamas Seating for all restaurants is underneath gorgeous pavilions that it was hard to find a place to sit during peak hours Peer pressure could force you to abandon a relaxing meal All of the restaurants are on Lookout Cay's expansive boardwalk system The boardwalks are gorgeous and designed to protect the ocean grasses below If you're a family camped at the beach keep in mind that it's a bit of a schlep to get to the food It's also important to note that food service stops at 2 p.m Bahamian food at Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) Although Disney has added Bahamian chicken and seafood rice bowls as well as locally seasoned salmon and snapper these windows were on the side of the restaurants and were a little hard to find I'd estimate that 8 out of 10 Lookout Cay guests chose hamburgers ribs and chicken as opposed to Bahamian food I personally liked the seafood bowls; they came with a spicy bite and reminded me of jambalaya One issue that I saw at all the BBQ stands and eating areas: Flies were constant even with the fly fans that were at the buffet counters and tables and it certainly didn't entice me to go back for seconds what's a cruise meal without soft serve for dessert Refreshment station at Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) lemonade and soft drinks are free on Disney Stations were prominently displayed at the restaurants plus there were water fountains near the restrooms if you're camped out on the beach with your family there are no water sources that are conveniently located The line sells cooler bags and bottled water right at the end of the pier But that's a pricey add on for a situation that should be easier I hope water stations are added closer to the beach in the future Blue Hole Bar at Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) (It was so hot during my visit that any place that held any shade was a hot ticket) Cocktail menu at Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) Prices for cocktails on the island were similar to what you'd find onboard Souvenir drink at Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) The Eleuthera Euphoria has Goslings rum and Dole Whip pineapple Smoothie menu at Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) If you're looking for more cool drinks the Sandsational Smoothies bar had a nice selection of ways to chill out during the heat of the day Cabana rentals on private islands have become a huge cash cow for cruise lines Lookout Cay has two cabana sections -- one for families at Mabrika Cove and adults-only cabanas at Serenity Bay The Mabrika Cove cabanas are removed from the action at Lookout Cay One nice thing about the Mabrika Cove cabanas is that you're in view of the ship They have a covered indoor area with seating you have a double plush lounge chair and a table for four where you have umbrellas and lounge chairs Waiter service at Mabrika Cove family cabanas at Disney's Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) While there's no pavilion restaurant at Mabrika Cove -- why would there be Waiters bring food and drink to the cabanas from a touchpad that families have inside Another bonus for the Mabrika Cove cabanas -- a golf cart delivers you right to your door and back to the pier Both Mabrika Cove and Serenity Bay have Grand cabanas that can fit up to 16 people There are four Grand cabanas in Mabrika Cove and two at Serenity Bay The cost for the single guests for up to six guests is $923 with $56 for each additional person over 3 years old The Grand Cabanas at Mabrika Cove start at $1,375 for up to 10 people with $56 for additional guests over 3 years old The adults-only Serenity Bay flows naturally at the north end of Lookout Cay It's not nearly as separate as the adult area on Castaway Cay; in fact you can't really tell where one area ends and the other begins The regular cabanas fit up to 10 people and start at $523 for six people with an additional cost of $56 for additional individual guests over age 18 the Serenity Bay cabanas have shaded indoor seating a mini fridge stocked with non-alcoholic drinks sunscreen and snacks and a touch pad where you can call for food and drink A shaded patio has a double lounger and a table The Grand Serenity cabins fit up to 16 people. The price for up to 10 guests is $963 with $56 for each additional person over 18 Interior of Serenity Bay Grand Cabana Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) the interior of the Grand Serenity cabanas give people a lot more room to congregate The outside area is more like an entire patio than a deck The beach here is a bit more cut off from the water than you find down at the family swimming area Serenity Bay has a BBQ area serving most of the same food that you find at True True BBQ and True True Too BBQ One weird thing -- I couldn't find the Bahamian specialties here Serenity Bay BBQ has the same limited seating issues that you find at the other food stations so you're better off coming during non-peak hours (although food service stops at 2 p.m.) Lookout Cay has two small waterparks for kids to cool off during the day The Rush Out Gush Out park has two waterslides and lots of stations and sprays for kids to get drenched Rush Out Gush Out is inspired by the Junkanoo shacks where those participating in the parades make their costumes It's a colorful and playful spot to spend time Sebastian's Cove waterpark at Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) Sebastian's Cove is a drop-off waterpark where families can leave their children to play It's Lookout Cay's answer to the Oceaneer Club onboard and staffed by the same counselors Sebastian's Cove is meant for kids ages 3 to 12 Snorkelers at Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) While many people will simply enjoy a beach day at Lookout Cay there are a few excursions you can tap into snorkeling equipment was available for rental and you can go right off the beach The reef around Eleuthera has some excellent snorkeling as well passengers will be able to take snorkeling excursions elsewhere around the island; a marina area for tour boats has already been built at the end of Lookout Cay's pier Bikes will be available to rent for excursions as well; the path was not open during our visit as it was still being cured The island has a station for hair plaiting too I ran out of time to visit Lookout Cay's nature trail which takes you to the southernmost point of the island The path is still in development but the plan is to have QR codes along the path to tell you about the flora and fauna Also to come: Excursions outside Lookout Cay into south Eleuthera We were also told that Lookout Cay will have its own 5K, similar to Castaway Cay Souvenir pins at Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) it wouldn't be a visit to any Disney property without the ability to buy "merch.' The designers at Disney have worked overtime to create special Lookout Cay merchandise that is already being sold at premium prices on eBay Disney T'ings store at Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) had a line out the door when we first arrived with people waiting to see and buy all the new items Minnie and Mickey dolls in Bahamian outfits (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) Plushies of Mickey and Minnie in their Bahamian garb were going fast T-shirts at Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) Perhaps the nicest items were those in bright colors featuring the Lookout Cay theme gold and black logo also has nods to Mickey Disney ears in Junkanoo pattern for sale at Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) T-shirts and souvenirs at Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) you can get t-shirts in regular colors as well Taste of Eleuthera store at Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) The Taste of Eleuthera boutique features items from local Bahamas artists Local Eleuthera art at Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) Some of the items created by the artists have obvious tie ins to Disney While others are more inspired by Eleuthera itself Local Eleuthera artist Chauncey Rolle at Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) you can buy full paintings from local artists Chauncey Rolle was on hand to show off his artwork Located in the Bahamas on the island of Eleuthera Lookout Cay is a privately developed escape designed for Disney Cruise Line guests We were on Disney's first sailing to Lookout Cay. Here's everything we know about the destination, which has its own pier -- a long one -- and is a stop on Disney cruise itineraries Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point is located in the Bahamas on the island of Eleuthera, appxorimately 114 miles southeast of Castaway Cay in the Caribbean "With three new ships joining our fleet we thought this would be an incredible opportunity to add another unique destination to our ports of call," said then-Disney Parks Experiences and Products Chairman Bob Chapek when the project was first announced at D23 Expo in 2019 "We looked all over the Bahamas and Caribbean for an ideal location that would enable us to create new experiences while celebrating the culture of this amazing region." Disney purchased the privately-owned Lighthouse Point and signed an agreement with the Government of The Bahamas to serve as a guide for the responsible development of the site Disney intends to develop less than 20% of the land -- only 16% is currently built -- and has committed to sustainable construction and environmental monitoring during building and once in operation Disney has also donated over 190 acres of the property to the local government. Access to Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point is also be allowed for local residents both when ships are in port and during special Community Days though -- Lookout Cay is about 45 minutes from the main population centers of Eleuthera) Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point is designed to be a beach day with activities for families is the fabulous expanse of beach that the site has Eleuthera is known for turquoise water and powder-white sand -- and Lookout Cay has plenty of both The main beach in Lookout Cay is the family beach There are several bars on the boardwalk nearby Umbrellas and chairs are also located closer to the facilities if you don't want to schlep down to the waters' edge The family beach is also in close proximity to the Rush Out Gush Out family water play area There is also be a dedicated space for toddlers Central to the Lookout Cay experience is Rush A Junkanoo Celebration -- a twice-daily show that leans into Bahamian culture and celebration The shows we saw focused on arts and music Disney characters also made an appearance in special Bahamas clothing Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) actually takes place under a covered gaming pavilion Mabrika Cove is located on the side of the island that faces Lookout Cay's half-mile pier This area is reserved for 20 premium family cabanas for rent including four double cabanas that can accommodate larger groups Serenity Bay is the destination's adults-only beach although it's only separated from the rest of Lookout Cay on a food path Serenity Bay has a dedicated dining area for food and drink although the menu is the same as elsewhere Six private cabanas are available to rent here run by Disney Cruise Line counselors and offers drop off service for kids ages 3 to 12 The space includes a splash pad inspired by "The Little Mermaid," a shaded area and dedicated dining area Opportunities to interact with Disney characters on the island are also available both at the Fun in the Sun Beach Bash and at scheduled times A short nature walk to Lighthouse Point has QR codes along the path where visitors can learn about the island's flora and fauna Bike and snorkel rentals are also available Disney plans to offer shore excursions to other areas in Eleuthera too Beach at Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) Eleuthera Island is part of the "Out Islands" of the Bahamas, and are known for turquoise water and white sand beaches. Princess Cruises has its private beach area, Princess Cays and other Carnival Corporation cruise lines often stop there Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point is a separate itinerary stop for Disney an open-trestle design that eliminates the need for dredging as part of the line’s sustainability efforts the line has golf carts that can be reserved at Guest Services for people with accessibility issues; there are no plans to add a tram for the half-mile walk Disney calls Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point a "complement" to Castaway Cay, which is located near another Bahamian Out Island The focus of the two islands are very different Castaway Cay is based on a fictional story about "castaways" on a deserted island While Lookout Cay is about showcasing the very real culture of The Bahamas Castaway Cay has a surrounded cove for swimming and snorkeling whereas Lookout Cay is more of a long beach Both locations have gorgeous sand and water, We've been to both Castaway Cay and Lookout Cay on perfect beach days and both have that postcard-pretty vibe that will make everyone on your social feed jealous Lookout Cay is more spread out than Castaway Cay Not only do you have the longer pier to walk there's a 15-minute tram ride to get to the main beach So it's really difficult to go back and forth to the ship during the day unless you have a private cabana at Mabrika Cove (and if you've ponied up for that Lookout Cay has added a few Bahamian specialties such as rice bowls to the menu of burgers But the island was combating a fly problem on our visit Castaway Cay also has water stations that are closer to the beach than they are at Lookout Cay Cultural Junkanoo crafts at Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) the Junkanoo show is a huge plus for Lookout Cay We also loved that Lookout Cay had themed craft activities for kids out of the sun Disney Cruises Castaway Cay 5K (Photo: Disney Cruise Line) Castaway Cay has its beloved 5K run (although Disney tells us that Lookout Cay will have one too It's too soon to tell whether the excursions and activities at Lookout Cay will surpass those at Castaway If you're judging both islands on their cabana experience that the Mabrika Cove beach was so far away from the main Lookout Cay area it's highly unlikely you'll go see the Junkanoo show or take part in other activities Specially designed Disney ears from Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Photo: Chris Gray Faust) Both destinations have specially designed merchandise for shoppers and Disney enthusiasts The merch at Lookout Cay was specifically made for Disney by local designers on Eleuthera and it will be hard for you to leave without wanting to pick up something special While we love that the Serenity Bay area at Castaway Cay is further away from kids the cabanas there don't come with their own beach So if you're looking for a private splurge the adults-only cabanas Lookout Cay are the nicer option if you just want a lounger and a place to drink without kids peering over your shoulder Please include what you were doing when this page came up and the Cloudflare Ray ID found at the bottom of this page.
