(Atlanta News First) - A Lilburn man was given a life sentence for fatally shooting a neighbor after the victim confronted him for making up rumors
felony murder and aggravated assault for shooting 26-year-old Stanislas Alverna to death in September 2020
according to the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office
Williams was then sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole
The DA’s office said the deadly shooting stemmed from unfounded allegations Williams made against Alverna and several other residents of the Home Stay Suites in Lilburn
and the other residents held a “meeting” in the parking lot of the extended stay hotel to discuss the rumors Williams spread about them
and Alverna was known for being unarmed,” prosecutors said
“When Alverna approached and asked why the rumors were started
Williams drew his handgun and shot Alverna five times.”
The DA’s Office said Williams’ gun was loaded with “R.I.P.” bullets
which are designed to fragment on contact to cause more damage
threw his gun in nearby woods and changed his appearance by shaving his head
He went into hiding for four days before turning himself into police
Someone at the hotel found the gun and gave it to Alverna’s family
prosecutors presented ballistic evidence that matched Williams’ handgun with the shells investigators found in the hotel parking lot
The jury returned the guilty verdicts after deliberating for two hours
“Stanislas Alvera was merely trying to communicate with the defendant in an attempt to resolve a verbal dispute,” Gwinnett District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson said in a statement
Alvera’s family and loved ones should find some comfort in knowing this defendant will be held accountable
Alverna’s family find some closure and healing.”

GA — Lilburn Police Chief Chris Dusik on Thursday addressed public concerns regarding stationed officers carrying rifles on their body armor at local events
The Multi-Jurisdictional Special Response Team has placed these officers at city-sponsored events
such as the Christmas Parade and Rock the Park
Dusik said he believes this security measure is necessary to prioritize public safety
This comes amid a deadly New Year's Day terrorist attack that killed 14 people and injured 35 others along New Orleans' Bourbon Street
"I often see people pass by and roll their eyes or hear remarks like
'Is that really necessary,'" Dusik said in a statement
I was shocked and saddened to hear about the attack during the New Year celebration in New Orleans
Innocent lives were taken for no reason other than evil
such events have become far too common in public gatherings
There are countless examples of these incidents occurring wherever large numbers of people congregate."
While the goal of such events is to create a family-friendly atmosphere
Dusik deemed public safety of great importance
Officers can either take what Dusik called an "ostrich effect," where he said they could bury their heads and pretend as if someone would not desire to harm the community
Dusik said he preferred to have his officers trained
'Is that really necessary,' my answer is: I hope it isn't
but we will always be prepared," Dusik said
"Let us all keep the families of those affected in New Orleans in our prayers
I wish our citizens and community a safe and prosperous new year."
