Lincoln voters will choose from a diverse pool of candidates in Tuesday’s general election for Lincoln City Council
Five of the six candidates are people of color
The six candidates are competing for three at-large seats on the City Council
which makes local laws and decides which projects are funded through the city budget
three Republicans and three Democrats advanced from the primary
Council members serve four-year terms with no term limits
At the time of her appointment, Washington was the first out Black lesbian in any public office in Nebraska. She was joined by Beckius
the first out gay man to serve as council chair
but I think this is an incredibly diverse field,” Washington said
“I can’t remember a time where we’ve ever had this many people of color running for Lincoln City Council ever.”
Washington is retired after a long career in the National Parks Service. She served on the Lincoln Parks and Recreation Advisory board
then as a Lincoln-Lancaster County Planning Commissioner before her appointment to the City Council in 2019
Washington is currently the only woman serving on the Council
“It's made a difference in my understanding what it feels like to be marginalized
but it doesn't change the policies that I am advocating for,” Washington said
affordable housing doesn't have a race or a gender attached to it
infrastructure does not have race or gender attached to it.”
According to GoodParty, political diversity is beneficial for promoting policies that include all groups of residents
especially those from historically marginalized groups
Seeing diversity in political leadership may also help dismantle harmful stereotypes and encourage more civic engagement
However, the City Council doesn’t have a lot of sway when it comes to policies on race, gender and sexual orientation. In 2022, the Council passed the “Fairness Ordinance,” which aimed to prevent discrimination in housing, public services and employment, but rescinded it shortly after it passed.
While Washington is glad to see diverse candidates involved
she said she and the other candidates are simply running to serve their city
“When a former council person who served 24 years ago comes back and says
‘I want to serve again,’ I don't think it has anything to do with his color,” Washington said
‘I'm ready to come back and do some more work.’”
Washington is talking about fellow candidate Jerry Shoecraft, who served on the council from 1993-2001. Though he was a Democrat then, Shoecraft is now running as a Republican.
Shoecraft said it’s wonderful to see the diverse group of candidates
“It's an honor and a privilege to want to serve for public office,” Shoecraft said
“I commend anyone who wants to have a voice and be a leader of this community
and everybody deserves to have a seat at the table.”
Shoecraft played basketball for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and now manages properties around the city
His main goals are optimizing traffic flow and promoting fiscal responsibility
Maher Aurang Zeb is running as a Republican and has similar priorities
along with advancing affordable housing initiatives
Zeb is an immigrant from Pakistan who has lived in Lincoln since 2003
Zeb runs a painting company and flips houses
He says an immigrant’s perspective is needed on the Council since Lincoln has a large immigrant community
“Even white folks came here as immigrants,” Zeb said
Other candidates in the race are incumbent Democrats Tom Beckius and Bennie Shobe, along with Republican Stan Parker.
The Lincoln City Council currently is a bit more diverse than other elected bodies in the state
with two Black members – Washington and Shobe – out of seven total
around 16% of Nebraska’s senators are non-white
Nebraska’s total population is about a quarter non-white
while the population of Lancaster County is about 21% non-white
In January, Pew Research Center reported that 26% of the voting members currently in U.S. Congress identified as something other than non-Hispanic white. This is the most racially and ethnically diverse group of U.S

Lincoln City has the world’s shortest river
Lincoln City Parks & Recreation (LCP&R) is excited to announce their brand-new World’s Shortest Park Trail
This very short 135-ft paved park trail is located within the open space on the southeast side of the new Schooner Creek Discovery Park
creating an environmentally friendly way for hikers to enjoy the natural wetlands and Schooner Creek
The trail is constructed and paved with compacted natural stone
and is surrounded by native plantings from Tillamook Estuaries Partnership
so hikers can take a breather on their .02 mile trek
As LCP&R was unable to verify this status with Guinness Book of World Records due to Guinness’ required cost (starting at $14k)
“I couldn’t justify spending more funds on bragging rights than spent on the actual trail construction
We’ve done our work and found no shorter paved public park trail
LCP&R welcomes any competitors in the designation of World’s Shortest Park Trail – and has voiced if there is competition
“Game on!” says LCP&R Parks Supervisor Monte Demaris
“I’ve never seen a trail shorter than this one but I’d like to see someone try!”
the public is encouraged to take a picture with the sign “World’s Shortest Park Trail” and share
Thanks to Oregon Parks Foundation for funding this trail with a $2k grant
and to Tillamook Estuaries Partnership 501c3 for the native plantings of the trail area

Wrexham will have to press pause on the party hats and champagne showers for just a little longer
as they wrap up their unforgettable League One journey with a visit to Lincoln City on Saturday afternoon
The Imps are sitting comfortably in 11th place
safe from being leapfrogged but still within shouting distance of a top-ten finish if they end on a high
Michael Skubala’s men have been a tough nut to crack at home lately — they haven’t tasted defeat at Sincil Bank since February’s last-gasp heartbreak against Burton and had gone five games unbeaten overall before last weekend’s rollercoaster loss at Stockport
Wrexham’s Hollywood script continues to sparkle
A commanding 3-0 win over Charlton last time out officially punched their ticket to the Championship
sealing back-to-back promotions in dreamlike fashion
Saturday’s clash is more of a final bow than a must-win — but don’t expect Phil Parkinson’s side to take their foot off the gas just yet
The Sporting News looks at the key details ahead of this game
Here's how to watch this League One match in the U.S.:
TV channel: —Live stream: Paramount+
This game is not available for live TV broadcast in the United States. Streaming options are available on Paramount+
which are currently offering a FREE trial to new members
WATCH:Wrexham games LIVE in US on Paramount+ (free-trial)
This League One match takes place at Sincil Bank in Lincoln
Here's how that time translates across the U.S.:
Lincoln City may still be licking their wounds after a dramatic defeat to Stockport
but at least they escaped without adding anyone new to the injury list
Head coach Michael Skubala should have the same crew ready to go for the final act of the season
the Imps have already taken a couple of hard hits this month
Dom Jeffries is on the mend after going under the knife for a hip issue
while Jovon Makama has been ruled out with a hamstring strain — both are done and dusted for the campaign
Wrexham will once again be without a few familiar faces when they take the stage one final time this season
and Will Boyle (calf) all still stuck in recovery mode and not expected to return just yet
One notable name missing from recent matchday lineups is none other than Paul Mullin
The fan favorite and former non-league goal machine hasn't laced up in League One since January — not due to form or fitness
but simply because Wrexham’s success has been rolling along without a hitch
with the job done and nothing left to play for but pride
manager Phil Parkinson might just let his heart rule his head this weekend
That could pave the way for a sentimental swan song for Mullin — and possibly for Ollie Palmer too — as the curtain closes on a season that’s been nothing short of storybook

How to watch the League One match between Lincoln City and Wrexham
Lincoln City will host Wrexham in the final game of the League One season at the LNER Stadium on Saturday
The Hollywood-owned club sealed their place in the Championship with a convincing 3-0 victory over Charlton Athletic last time out
while Lincoln remain safely settled in mid-table
Wrexham will pause their promotion celebrations on Saturday as they wrap up a memorable League One season with a visit to Lincoln City

The match will be played at the LNER Stadium on Saturday
with kick-off at 10 am ET for fans in the US
The Imps have been strong at home recently, unbeaten in six with four wins and two draws, including a 4-2 victory over Bolton Wanderers. They suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat at Stockport last weekend but face no fresh injury concerns, although season-ending absences for Dom Jeffries and Jovon Makama remain. Manager Mark Skubala is expected to field a similar squad to recent matches as Lincoln aims to finish the campaign on a high.
Wrexham arrive in good spirits after clinching promotion with a 3-0 win over Charlton and hold a five-point lead in second place. However, they continue to be hampered by injuries to key players, including Mo Faal, Andy Cannon, Luke Bolton, and Will Boyle, all sidelined for the foreseeable future.
Star striker Paul Mullin, out since January due to a persistent knee injury and limited playing time, may be given a rare farewell appearance in what could be his final match for the club. With promotion secured, manager Phil Parkinson might rotate the squad, but Wrexham remain a potent attacking force looking to end their League One campaign with a positive result.
Ryan Longman's goal against Lincoln City was his first for Wrexham
Wrexham kept the promotion celebrations going as they signed off from League One with a comfortable and clinical win at Lincoln City
Elliot Lee and Ryan Longman's second-half goals earned a 27th victory of a campaign that sees them return to the second tier for the first time in 43 years
It took Phil Parkinson's side onto 92 points
ending the midtable Imps' unbeaten run at home that had stretched back to February
Michael Skubala's Lincoln finished 11th in the final table
15 points ahead of the relegation places and 17 points off the play-offs
runners up behind title-winners Birmingham City
again underlined why they will be playing Championship football next season after an unprecedented third straight promotion as they made the most of the chances they forged
Providing the quality when it mattered and staying strong defensively when needed has been key for Parkinson's team who will now be playing second-tier football in three months' time – two years on from being in non-league
It was fitting that it was Lee who opened the scoring too; the only change from last week's promotion-sealing win over Charlton Athletic
the midfielder was among those who had been in the side that had earned that first step out of the National League
Wrexham were – understandably – below par to begin with
with Lincoln perhaps frustrated they failed to make more of their opponent's off-key start
The first-half drabness was in contrast to the final day colour provided by supporters
certainly among the travelling Wrexham fans
In a fancy-dress farewell to the third tier
clowns and – of course – Deadpool all made the most of the occasion
Wrexham had been forced to say farewell to the Football League in their final match before relegation to non-league
Times are different now and it is why supporters were keen to make the most of the moment
before the celebrations there was time for remembrance and reflection
with fans of both sides staying solemnly silent as respects were paid 40 years on from the Bradford City fire disaster
Lincoln had been the opponents on that tragic day at Valley Parade with two Imps fans – Bill Stacey and Jim West – among the 56 who died
Mr Stacey's family and Lincoln captain Paudie O'Connor laid a wreath in front of the Stacey West Stand
it was Lincoln who enjoyed the better of the opening 45 minutes
If not for some sharp reactions from Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo
Skubala's side could have easily taken a lead into the break with both James Gardner and Reeco Hackett threatening
But Wrexham emerged from the interval far more like their promotion-winning selves
with their rediscovered energy rewarded 53 minutes in as Lee powered a header home from Longman's cross from the right
It was a sweeping move from Wrexham for the breakthrough
and it was another impressive passing combination that provided the second with Longman this time finishing after being played in by James McClean
Lincoln substitute Jack Moylan was denied at the near post by Okonkwo as the Imps tried to dampen the party atmosphere
But Wrexham kept their clean sheet to continue the celebrations to end an historic season for the north Wales club
Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson told BBC Sport Wales:
"We wanted to finish in a professional manner and we spoke to the lads about that
"The perception of the group celebrations last week and the lads jetting out to Vegas this week – but in between that we wanted to finish the season well
I'm really pleased with that and I'm also delighted with 26 points from the last 11 away games – that's an outstanding return at any level of football
the wind was probably stronger than people realised and we didn't quite get the control we wanted
Lincoln City head coach Michael Skubala told BBC Radio Lincolnshire:
"I honestly thought we were so good first half – we did everything but score
You saw a team that wanted to take it to Wrexham
"But you always know against Wrexham that if you don't score they stick it out and they win 1-0
which is put it in the box and score to make it 1-0 and then it becomes a really tough afternoon
"Not where we wanted to finish this season but I'm really proud of the lads and really proud of what they've been doing."

The key to a fun weekend might be at the Lincoln City Cultural Center
where three days of events will help celebrate (and complete) the purchase of a new grand piano
Events begin with an evening concert Friday
May 3 and end with a vendor fair and the grand opening of the Outdoor Market on Sunday
The purpose of the weekend’s benefits is to pay off the balance of the cost to replace the center’s previous Baldwin MZ piano that was nearing the end of its lifespan
The need for a new grand piano has been long recognized by both cultural center staff and musicians
as the previous Baldwin required frequent tuning to sustain the high-quality sound essential for the hundreds of musical performances required of it every year
Classic Pianos in Portland has allowed the center to take possession of the beautiful
refurbished Yamaha C3 and given the center six months
“We’re aiming to do it in one weekend,” said Sara Reveile
At “A Grand Welcome — A Benefit Piano Concert,” hear the new Yamaha C3 in action
The inaugural celebration of the center’s new grand piano will include performances by composer Jasnam Daya Singh and jazz pianist David Morgenroth with bassist Bob Bowman
Singh was born in Brazil and is a Latin Grammy-nominated concert and jazz pianist and brilliant composer
Morgenroth was awarded the first doctoral degree in jazz performance by the University of North Texas and has performed across the United States
Bowman has also toured around the world and been on many recordings that have won or been nominated for Grammy awards
David Gomberg will take the stage to emcee and announce the winners of a prize drawing during intermission for all those who donate to the piano fund
The evening is intended to transport guests to the heart of Turkey
Guests can wander through a vibrant marketplace featuring authentic handcrafted goods such as Turkish textiles
Mediterranean-inspired appetizers designed by chef Donna Riani will satisfy the taste buds
while mesmerizing performances will bring the spirit of the Grand Bazaar to life
“We want to create an immersive cultural experience that not only delights our guests but also supports an important cause,” said executive director Niki Price
“The Grand Bazaar is a place of connection
and we are excited to bring that energy to Lincoln City Cultural Center for a night of giving back.”
entertainment and an exclusive first chance at the treasures of The Grand Bazaar
The evening will also include a 50/50 raffle with three prizes — up to $4,687 in cash
dinner for two at The Bay House or a 2024 Finders Keeper glass float
The raffle drawing will take place at the center at 3 p.m
The bazaar will be re-open along with the opening day of the outdoor Sunday Market
A portion of the sales from imported carpets and kilims
and other goods in the bazaar will also benefit local business owner and cultural center friend

The Lincoln County Leader reached out to Kara Wetterlin and Stephanie Hull
for insight into the Finders Keepers promotion
Lincoln County Leader: How did Finders Keepers become the iconic Lincoln City promotion that it is today
Wetterlin and Hull: The Finders Keepers project began in 1997
when a local artist first thought of glass floats as an intriguing way to launch the new millennium
Explore Lincoln City continued the promotion and now is celebrating the 25th anniversary
Lincoln County Leader: How many glass floats have been hidden along Lincoln City beaches since this promotion began
Wetterlin and Hull: The grand total of floats dropped including the partial 2025 season is 55,060
From that inaugural season until 2019 floats were dropped in the off season and each year matched the number of floats dropped
Explore Lincoln City decided to drop floats year-round and came up with roughly 3,000 dropped per year
how many artists have participated in the Finders Keepers glass floats development
Wetterlin and Hull: There has been a total of 39 shops with 90 total artists creating glass floats throughout the years
27 out of the 39 total shops are from Oregon with 18 from the Oregon Coast
Lincoln County Leader: Describe a few of the unique designs that we’ve seen over the years
Wetterlin and Hull: The first time we were introduced to glow in the floats by The Hot Shop was really special
The texture of the glow in the dark material is close to sand and designs were textured on some floats while others were styled with an extra layer of clear glass to add smoothness to them
Fernhill’s Earth Day floats which are created to look like the globes are pretty spectacular to see in person
The glass floats are frequently hidden along Lincoln City beaches by “Float Faries.” Those finding the signed
and handcrafted glass floats are encouraged to bring the treasure to Explore Lincoln City
at the Lincoln City Visitor Center on the 4th floor of Lincoln City Hall at 801SW Highway 101 to receive a Certificate of Authenticity and information of the artist who created the glass float

According to the North Lincoln County Historical Museum (NLCHM)
once the Japanese fishing industry started replacing their hempen rope with plastic
until it was nearly impossible to find any in the late 1990s
a group of artists and community organizations worked together to celebrate the new millennium and renew the joy of finding floats on the beach
The Finders Keepers program has kept that tradition alive for 25 years and has inspired
and brought together phenomenal glass artists from all over the Pacific Northwest
that will walk visitors through the history and development of the program
show a unique example from year year since 2000
and celebrate the glass art community that has developed around Finders Keepers
The NLCHM is located 4907 SW Highway 101 in the Taft District of Lincoln City
