Lincoln Park head coach Mike Bariski watches a game against Aliquippa on Dec. 17, 2019, in Midland. “I can’t even understand who wouldn’t like him,” Bariski said. “A kid with braces. Always smiling. Fifteen years old. Come on.” Bariski said he visited Johnson at a Pittsburgh hospital where he was recovering Thursday from a gunshot wound to his right forearm. He said Johnson was injured in a drive-by shooting in his hometown while walking to a friend’s house. His father, D’andre Johnson, said Thursday his son was doing “way better” but had a cast on his arm. “Thank God for letting my boy be ok!” Johnson said in a Facebook post, noting that Damar wouldn’t need surgery because the bullet went straight through. “He can’t even walk to a friends house without being worried about him … ,” his father added. Damar Johnson showed his potential this winter while starting at point guard. Lincoln Park entered the season with an all-freshman lineup and struggled to a 2-20 record. But he’s seen as a top player for the new-look Leopards, who won consecutive WPIAL and PIAA titles in 2023 and ‘24 with a veteran-heavy lineup. Johnson scored 21 points in a game against Ambridge and had 20 vs. West Allegheny. “He’s really good,” Bariski said. Johnson and his teammates played a game in a spring league earlier Wednesday at Northgate. Lincoln Park had canceled classes for Thursday because of power outages from Tuesday’s storms. Farrell police confirmed a non-fatal shooting occurred Wednesday. Bariski said no immediate arrests were made. “It was just in his neighborhood going to his friend’s house and bang, bang, bang,” he said. Bariski said Johnson, who was flown by helicopter to Pittsburgh, had a broken bone in his arm. “You put your arm up when you hear shots,” Bariski said. “The doctor thought it might’ve ricocheted off that bone, and that’s why it didn’t hit him anywhere else. He’s very lucky.” If Javascript is disabled browser, to place orders please visit the page where our photos are available to purchase On April 30, Lincoln Park freshman boys basketball guard Damar Johnson was shot in his hometown of Farrell and suffered non-life-threatening injuries The news was first reported by Bob Greenburg The Times confirmed the news May 1 with Lincoln Park athletic director and boys basketball head coach Mike Bariski Johnson was involved in a drive-by shooting sustaining injuries that were not life-threatening The freshman will not need to have surgery for the injury that he suffered from the shooting Johnson transferred to Lincoln Park in July 2024 ahead of his freshman season and was one of the program’s top scorers in his first season at the high school level Summer Kickoff Craft Brews Summer Wine Fest the current federal administration (that oversees the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) proposed a change to the Endangered Species Act that would roll back protections for threatened animals and the lands they reside on We are asking for your help in opposing this proposed rule the term “harm,” used throughout the legislation includes “significant habitat modification or degradation where it actually kills of injures wildlife by significantly impairing essential behavior patterns such prohibited “harm” would only refer only to physical acts against individual animals clearing the way for habitat destruction and population decline Habitat loss remains the number-one cause of wildlife decline the progress we’ve made would be reversed and so many of the amazing and iconic species that exist today would be one step closer to disappearing forever We urge you to raise your voice for the 1,519 species listed as endangered species by the ESA be sure to state your opposition to the proposed change note that habitat protection is critical to saving endangered species and add a personal note about why this is important to you you can also copy and paste the following language into the comment box: citizen who is passionate about wildlife conservation and the protection of natural spaces I strongly oppose the proposed rule to rescind the regulatory definition of “harm” in the Endangered Species Act as it would allow the destruction of habitats that are critical to the survival of endangered species History indicates that the Endangered Species Act in its current form works; it has brought back bald eagles please do not rescind the definition of “harm” in the Endangered Species Act Not only could it be devastating for wildlife populations but it could also destroy the lands and waters that make America such a beautiful place If you’d like to stay in touch with the zoo about future opportunities to make a difference, sign up for the Lincoln Park Zoo newsletter: Choose “Conservation & Science Work and Advocacy” when asked what you’d like to be kept informed about Administration Offices: 2001 North Clark Street • Chicago The Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce has checked its list — checked it twice The Urban Greening Community workshop is an event discussing existing green spaces and planning for the addition of other green spaces community led maintenance in Southeastern San Diego specifically for the neighborhoods of Chollas View This free family-friendly workshop will host interactive activities facilitated by the Urban Greening Taskforce that will target community member feedback for the development of the following three subtasks of the UG: - Community led maintenance for green spaces - Identification of green and tree spaces in project area - Conceptual designs for green spaces and tree spaces in project area Join us to learn more about the Community Planning Collaborative for a Green Southeastern San Diego, a planning project funded by the Transformative Climate Communities led by UCP and various community based organizations and community members The Urban Collaborative Project on Facebook Kendrick Lamar and SZA are bringing the Grand National Tour to Philadelphia. sidewalk Patel passed Fowler and her cousin on a sidewalk on that block but Fowler turned around moments later and approached Patel with a gun extended Assistant State’s Attorney Mike Pekara said in court A couple items fell from his bag during the fight Fowler pointed a handgun and shot him once in the chest Several neighbors who rushed outside after the shooting tried to help Patel by putting pressure on his wound until paramedics got there A witness who was at home on that block heard Fowler say that she and her cousin needed to get out of there Fowler and her cousin ran east and arrived at the CTA Red Line Fullerton station where they boarded a southbound train Fowler allegedly called 911 and reported a shooting They eventually got off the train in the Loop and got into a waiting car a few blocks away who took Patel to a hospital where he later was pronounced dead marshals arrested Fowler Tuesday outside her home in south suburban Thornton who identified Fowler in photos as the shooter No charges have been filed against the cousin Fowler’s attorney questioned how the confrontation actually played out and said Fowler tried to help the victim by calling police but was simply confused about directions since she does not live in that part of town Fowler could have said she herself had left the scene instead of referring to “offenders” in an “attempt to mislead and misdirect” police Marubio pointed to “significant” evidence against her and ordered her held pending trial As of Friday afternoon a GoFundMe created by Patel’s brother had raised nearly $20,000 of a $30,000 goal of which Patel said will be given 100% to finding justice and to causes that will make an impact to reduce violence was “tragically shot and killed 50 feet from his apartment.” and loving anything bad or negative to say about anyone he encountered “Kevin excelled throughout his academic career His brilliance showed from achieving his national honors society at Perkiomen Valley High School to his undergraduate degree in Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin,” the obituary states “His passion for math and numbers kept him driven to find a successful career as an Actuary and and comfortable is our number one goal all year long We adjust our care plans with the changing of Chicago’s seasons and we love to see certain species thriving in the snowier months,” said General Wheel of Fortune with family and friends at the school’s auditorium on Thursday Please check your inbox for your confirmation By signing up, you agree to our Privacy Notice and European users agree to the data transfer policy Lincoln Park High School Principal Eric Steinmiller deleted the first two emails he got from Wheel of Fortune because he thought they were spam Being on the long-running game show had never been on his radar The third email convinced him the offer to hop on a flight to Los Angeles and star in an episode of the show was real although he said his decision wasn’t fueled by the desire to earn some cash or to meet Ryan Seacrest “It was to represent Lincoln Park High School,” Steinmiller said Lincoln Park High School Principal Eric Steinmiller was one of three contestants on Wheel of Fortune Thursday evening The Wheel of Fortune episode starring Steinmiller aired Thursday night he organized a watch party in the auditorium of his North Side high school some students gave their principal fist bumps while others asked if they would be getting scholarships if he lucked out estimated that Steinmiller would make at least $20,000 that night Lincoln Park High School student Harmony Brooks watched her principal’s appearance on Wheel of Fortune at a Thursday evening watch party at the school But Steinmiller walked away with only $2,000 in his pocket he laughed as he watched himself struggle to guess the right letters on screen while his opponents scored big by figuring out unexpected phrases like “photo finish your vegetables.” Steinmiller said he was focused at the time on getting momentum on his wheel spins “Maybe I was too focused on getting a good spin,” he said which is why “it kept landing on bankrupt.” Lincoln Park High School Principal Eric Steinmiller addresses the crowd at his Wheel of Fortune watch party on Thursday Steinmiller was on the verge of winning a trip to Switzerland When the wheel landed on the ‘bankrupt’ space covering his eyes with his palms as the rest of the auditorium shouted out in disappointment Brooks said she had a good time trying to guess the words on screen ‘That’s the word,’ but then when I got the word wrong “At least he walked away with some money,” she said believes his principal “could have won a lot more” than he did during his appearance on Wheel of Fortune thinks his principal “could have won a lot more.” Trailer said he felt proud seeing his principal talk up his students on national TV and it was really cool to see our [school] name being shown on a show that I used to watch when I was a kid.” Nearly 10 years after chimpanzees were listed as endangered and research on chimpanzees became illegal Chimp Haven—the national chimpanzee sanctuary and a Lincoln Park Zoo partner—has received the final six members of the primate group known familiarly as the Alamogordo chimps “We are so happy to share that all chimps from the Alamogordo Primate Facility have arrived at Chimp Haven and are settling into their new home,” its Facebook page announced “We look forward to sharing more as they begin new adventures and become part of the Chimp Haven family.” This development is welcome news for animal welfare groups and organizations like Lincoln Park Zoo which provided research and welfare reports on the animals these allies have been fighting to improve the conditions of chimpanzees and specifically the group of chimps held at Alamogordo 21 new arrivals have made their way to Chimp Haven Chimp Haven staff welcome the Alamogordo chimps Maintenance and Protection Act was passed in 2000 to provide for a federal sanctuary system for “surplus federally owned chimpanzees that are no longer needed in research conducted or supported by the National Institutes for Health or other Federal agencies,” as the act reads Chimp Haven was awarded a federal contract to operate as a national chimpanzee sanctuary dozens of chimpanzees have lived for a long time at the National Institutes of Health’s Alamogordo Primate Facility at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico even though they are no longer being used in research NIH announced in 2015 that it would no longer support biomedical research on chimpanzees “All NIH-owned chimpanzees that reside outside of the Federal Sanctuary System operated by Chimp Haven an average of 36 NIH chimps a year were transferred to Chimp Haven resulting in more than 200 primates relocating to the larger habitats at Chimp Haven NIH announced that 44 surviving chimpanzees at Alamogordo would not be sent to a sanctuary as required NIH officials later said that the aging chimps remaining in government care either had health conditions that made them too fragile to move or were socially bonded with a sick chimp chimp supporters pointed out that many chimps at the private nonprofit Chimp Haven have conditions that require long-term care more than 50% of Chimp Haven’s primate residents receive medications to manage different health conditions and the Humane Society Legislative Fund filed a lawsuit charging NIH with violating federal law a federal judge determined that NIH violated the law when it decided the chimps would not move to Chimp Haven NIH committed to sending the remaining chimpanzees to the sanctuary In a New York Times article in which it announced the news NIH officials noted that relocating the animals remains risky but the agency was afraid it might face a staffing shortage of caretakers due to upcoming retirements and recruiting difficulties Wotoni and Al (who is also pictured in the featured photo above) engage in a grooming session the news today confirms that 21 Alamogordo chimps have now arrived at the 200-acre refuge and will live out the rest of their lives with nutritious food notes in the sanctuary’s official announcement that it recently broke ground on a new expansion that made it possible for the chimps to come there following years of effort by animal welfare groups and supporters who tirelessly advocated for their retirement from their former research facility to sanctuary.” director of Lincoln Park Zoo’s Animal Welfare Science Program “The move to our partner Chimp Haven should provide a substantial improvement in welfare for these chimps allowing them to express a full range of natural behaviors and have a social environment that can support the needs of this long-lived We look forward to watching them live out their lives under thoughtful care that enhances their emotional and physical wellbeing.” Everything is coming alive at Lincoln Park Zoo Viewing When you’re Galit a Michelin-starred restaurant that opened in 2019 in Lincoln Park one that’s built a well-defined identity and a loyal fanbase it’s sometimes challenging to justify change without pushback For James Beard Award-winning chef Zach Engel and partner Andrés Clavero Cafe Yaya is the neighborhood restaurant they hoped to establish with Galit it has diverged from its roots as a neighborhood restaurant Cafe Yaya represents a desire to return to those origins Their all-day bakery and bistro opened last week in Lincoln Park with unique pastries during the day and a dinner menu that gives Engel a chance to cook more than Middle Eastern cuisine. If Cafe Yaya’s opening day’s sold-out status of its pastries is any indication Clavero says that they always envisioned Galit as a flagship and wanted to open a more casual sibling the building next door to Galit became available for purchase “The building’s location allows us to double-down in a neighborhood that’s embraced us while still staying involved with the day-to-day operations at Galit,” says Clavero The last three years were spent thoughtfully deciding what they wanted to do with the space in addition to obtaining the necessary permits to transform the former office and upstairs apartment into their second dream project Cafe Yaya became what we needed as individuals and creatives and also what we saw the neighborhood was asking for,” says Engel Heading up Cafe Yaya’s extensive pastry program is Mary Eder-McClure Both are operating partners at Yaya and Galit “They have helped us steer and guide this ship through some of the murkiest of waters and we would not be here today without their support,” says Clavero Eder-McClure taps into some of the Middle Eastern ingredients and flavors found at Galit Breakfast pastries are one segment she is particularly excited about Those who visited Galit’s brunch service on a makeshift patio during the pandemic will recognize a few of them including her flaky potato-and-herb-filled boureka finished with everything bagel spices Then there’s the challah from Galit that gets recrafted as a handheld shakshuka-style bun at Yaya “We don’t serve shakshuka at Galit but it’s a similar vibe,” she says which is available on both the morning and evening menus is a sweet treat close to Eder-McClure’s heart “My grandma is Lebanese and this is something that had been passed down to her and then to my mom,” she says “This was the dessert my family made at Rosh Hashanah and as soon as I was able Other baked goods include a weekly sundae and a slice of the day look for fruit-filled crisps and cobblers made with local produce either in the pastry case or on the dessert menu “We are doing simple things that are really tasty and don’t have 12 components on a plate,” she adds For the dinner and eventual lunch and brunch menus straightforward stuff that’s approachable for the neighborhood,” he says “It’s things I want to eat at a restaurant.” Engel is looking back — embracing his time spent working in New Orleans and California the former at Shaya Restaurant where he earned a James Beard Rising Star Chef of the Year Award in 2017 — as well as exploring more current experiences Engel has spent the last couple of years visiting bistros in Tel Aviv and Paris “I really enjoy that freeform style of cooking but also having everything rooted in classic techniques and the ideation of a dish,” he says On Yaya’s menu that means half chicken roasted in a wood-burning oven paired with challah croutons a lamb burger topped with za’atar mayonnaise and served on a potato roll and duck confit paired with beluga lentils and Swiss chard Engel will also serve some “fun and silly stuff,” such as dips (think caramelized onion miso labneh and pimento cheese) which can be paired with fresh baked bread local ingredients to make appearances soon I’m looking forward to being able to change the menu a lot more easily than we can at Galit and capturing those fleeting moments of seasonality in the Midwest,” he says What you won’t see at Cafe Yaya is pita and hummus “They can find that next door,” says Engel we don’t want to become people that are only known for cooking Middle Eastern food.” Stroemer is excited to feature wines that don’t adhere to Galit’s well-regarded Middle Eastern-heavy list Yaya’s wine menu features a combination of familiar varietals and ones that diners may not have heard of from unexpected regions In addition to a diverse by-the-glass program all wine bottles will be priced under $100 Cocktails lean heavily on classics with a focus on small-craft producers it’s familiar styles but maybe not familiar producers,” says Stroemer He also predicts ingredients from Yaya’s pastry program will cross over into the cocktails “There are a lot of ways we can reduce waste and be creative,” he says Rounding out the beverage list is an espresso program featuring coffee from Sparrow Coffee and chai concentrate from Freeman House Chai Chicago’s Siren Betty led the interior design of Cafe Yaya which features a bar and seating area on the first floor and a private event and community-focused space on the second They discovered exposed brick when drywall was removed from the walls of the 1904 building Soft earth tones and richly textured surfaces are featured throughout the restaurant “Our design meeting was literally make it look like it’s been here for a long time and give it that soul.” Art nouveau design touches here and there add to the vintage vibe as does the logo Family also comes into play with Cafe Yaya’s name which is the nickname of one of Engel’s daughters (Galit is named after her sister.) The cafe’s moniker also references Yael a biblical figure who plays an important role in the story of Israel’s wars with the Canaanites “I am really proud of us for having a vision for how we knew we needed to grow our business,” says Engel “That’s in terms of the breadth of what we are doing and creating multiple outlets as well as including people on our team who deserved to be hailed for their expertise and creativity.” Cafe Yaya, 2431 N. Lincoln Avenue, open 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Reservations for parties five and larger are available via Resy.
