The new Instagram video is captioned "This is the music…"
Lincoln Center Theater has teased a potential upcoming Ragtime revival on their social media. In a new video, an actor walks to a piano near the Vivian Beaumont Theatre to play the iconic opening chords from the musical. The video ends with text that states "Something's Beginning."
The video is captioned "This is the music…," which led to a multitude of comments hoping the post teases an upcoming revival of the classic musical at Lincoln Center.
The new tease follows the recent New York City Center production, which starred Joshua Henry, Nichelle Lewis, Caissie Levy, Brandon Uranowitz, Shaina Taub, and more. This sweeping, powerful musical adaptation of E.L. Doctorow’s novel of the same name features music by Stephen Flaherty, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, and a book by Terrence McNally.
The City Center production was helmed by Tony-nominated Encores
who will now serve as Lincoln Center Theater's new Artistic Director
It has not been confirmed if this potential revival will be the same as the City Center production
Ahead of its airing this Thursday, CBS has shared first-look photos of the Season 2 finale of Elsbeth, which reveal a special musical number: Chicago's iconic 'Cell Block Tango.' Take a look at the photos here!
Senior officials at the National Endowment for the Arts have resigned following the Trump administration's withdrawal of grants from arts organizations across the country.
With two Broadway musicals under his belt, Josh Groban isn't done yet. While promoting his new retrospective album Gems, the multi-platinum performer told TalkShopLive that he hopes to return to the New York stage in the future.
The cast has been revealed for Ginger Twinsies, a deliriously clever send-up of the beloved 1998 film The Parent Trap, written and directed by Kevin Zak. See who is starring and learn how to purchase tickets !

Pedestrians and cyclists fill the 4700 block of North Lincoln Avenue
which is closed to traffic until late next week for construction work
On a recent sunny spring afternoon on one block in Lincoln Square
made chalk drawings on the pavement and zipped by on scooters
dog walkers and cyclists passed through the 4700 block of North Lincoln Avenue — without concern for vehicles speeding by
It was a stark contrast to the typical rush hour on the block
when cars would come to a standstill on the narrow street
between West Lawrence Avenue and West Leland Avenue
has been closed to vehicle traffic since April 21 to accommodate construction at the Lincoln and Leland intersection
a member of the Heart of Lincoln Square Neighbors Association
he gathered some friends and went to a hardware store for supplies to build benches that they’ve placed on the block
within 30 seconds kids were sitting on them
“We wanted to take advantage of having this opportunity where we have this open street and wanted to create a place where people could hang out
a bike safety advocate and Heart of Lincoln Square Neighbors Association board member stands in the middle of a temporarily shutdown section of North Lincoln Avenue between West Lawrence Avenue and West Leland Avenue
He hopes the impromptu pedestrian way can catch the eyes of city officials who work to make Chicago’s streets safer for pedestrians and bicyclists
The construction is part of a city Department of Transportation initiative to improve Leland Avenue between Western and Lincoln avenues
It builds off the 2019 Lincoln Square Master Plan
which sought to enhance traffic flow and improve road safety through building low-stress roads
support community and economic development and enhance public spaces
including the plaza adjacent to the CTA Brown Line station,” a CDOT spokesperson said
The construction was extended another week and is expected to be finished by late next week
The construction on Lincoln Avenue in Lincoln Square is part of a city Department of Transportation initiative to improve Leland Avenue between Western and Lincoln avenues
which sought to enhance traffic flow and improve road safety through building low stress roads
some residents and businesses on the block have enjoyed “a nice little breather” from the traffic
“[The closure has] actually increased our business,” said Sean Herron
which has placed a sales rack full of merchandise on the sidewalk since the road closed
and I love seeing people out here,” Herron said
While the road closure is taking place in the spring
Herron questioned what happens to a car-free road in the winter and pointed out the need for access for persons with disabilities and other regulations
co-owner of Gene’s Sausage Shop and Delicatessen
said the deli’s business has slowed a bit since the road closure due to people who don’t live in the area steering clear
“It’s the people that are from outside the community that are having the hardest time getting here,” Luszcz said
“And we see that with ZIP code transactions
We’re not seeing the people coming from the northern suburbs
Luszcz supports the idea of a vehicleless pedestrian way in the neighborhood
but he questions whether the 4700 block of North Lincoln Avenue is the right place for one
He said a lack of parking and public restrooms makes it “not sustainable.”
and the winging it is not happening,” Luszcz said
adding that the pedestrian area should include plans for infrastructure to make it sustainable for businesses and the community
A man blows up a large soap bubble for children playing in the 4700 block of North Lincoln Avenue in the Lincoln Square neighborhood
Islam said any permanent pedestrian way would entail rigorous planning with each stakeholder
a road closure related to construction is not ideal
where we’re kind of figuring things out on the fly,” Islam said
Islam envisions Chicago one day having the widespread pedestrian ways like the vibrant plazas in some countries in Europe and Asia
“European pedestrian plazas and central business districts are light years ahead of anything that we’re doing in Chicago
and I think it’s something that we should be piloting outside of just street festivals,” Islam said
The Heart of Lincoln Square Neighbors Association has received more than 1,000 responses to its survey of neighbors and businesses seeking feedback about the pedestrian way
About 70% of respondents said they strongly support a greater role of pedestrianization on the block
and about 83% said they think pedestrian-only access should be expanded beyond street festivals
The group plans to continue collecting surveys
then meet with the Lincoln Square Ravenswood Chamber of Commerce and 47th Ward Ald
Matt Martin to discuss the possibility of a permanent public way in the area
Islam at least hopes the road closure offers a glimpse to residents of what could be possible across the city
“Seeing so many kids play in the street while their parents are eating at one of the restaurants
say something to them and then run back out on the street
and the families don’t have to worry about car traffic
which could be incredibly fatal — it’s really incredible seeing this kind of space
and it’s something I want for every neighborhood in Chicago.”

Is it the Greater Lincoln Square neighborhood that runs from Montrose up to Bryn Mawr
We’ve decided that Lincoln Square means the actual square and immediate surrounding area—roughly from Rockwell to Leavitt on the east-west spectrum, and Leland to Winnemac north-south. Anything on the bubble you will also find in our Ravenswood guide. Don’t like that definition? Too bad. Here’s where to eat in Lincoln Square.

If you spend waking hours in the neighborhood, Capriccio will make your life a lot better with their Roman-style sandwiches and coffee, and a comfortable space to kill time. The namesake mortadella sandwich is hard not to finish in one lift, and the margarita pizzas with pesto have a similar easy chew thanks to the airy sourdough focaccia
and stare out the windows at the Chicagoans outside
the square’s fountain is just steps away.)
Del Sur BakeryBakery/Cafe
Lincoln Square
The longanisa croissant and turon danish at this takeout-only Filipino bakery deserve an Art Institute exhibition
They’re pastry marvels with immaculate honeycomb structures and ASMR-ready flaky layers
But Del Sur’s pastry prowess doesn’t stop at lamination—other creations like ube oatmeal cream pies and bay-leaf-infused adobo brownies are equally delicious
Just know that a visit requires showing up way before their 8am opening
Korean
This place is small and casual—much more of a bar than a restaurant
But you should work your way through their entire menu over multiple visits
and the first thing you should try is their fire chicken
Chunks of marinated chicken are grilled (on an open grill behind the bar) until the marinade becomes charred and caramelized
and it comes with a Thousand Island-dressed cabbage slaw to help balance out the heat
It’s perfect for a solo meal at the counter
American
Lincoln Square might not be the first place you'd expect to see a restaurant with a $190 10-course tasting menu
but that's exactly where you'll find Atelier
But that’s not to say it lacks personality—the welcoming staff and eclectic playlist that cycles through hip-hop and bluegrass keeps it from feeling uncomfortably sterile
each delicious course also covers a lot of ground
to a cute mini apple cider donut with tiny edible flowers
8.1Luella’s Southern KitchenSouthern
This casual, BYOB spot serves fantastic Southern food
and you feel like a part of the family the moment you walk in
there’s a good chance his wife will take your order
and they’ll both treat you like a long-lost cousin
The menu includes Southern staples like fried chicken and shrimp and grits
or dining in if you feel like showing up with a six-pack
8.0San Soo Gab SanKorean BBQ spot your table is swarmed with side dishes that make free table bread feel insignificant
there are over 25 things to snack on between bites of grilled meat
And the seasoned meats are fantastic—get the thinly sliced bulgogi and their sweet and savory wang kalbi
which get extra flavor from their charcoal grills
so it’s perfect for celebrating with some friends who can help you finish the meat
7.7The WarblerJimmy's Pizza CafePizza
If you’re searching for a New York-style pizza place
perfectly greasy slices on little paper plates
like a plain cheese with red sauce and a garlicky white pizza topped with blobs of ricotta
8.0Jibek JoluCentral Asian
Jibek Jolu is one of the only Kyrgyz restaurants in the city
and this Lincoln Square sit-down spot with a small yurt-like interior has great Central Asian food
Every dumpling on the menu is delicious enough to warrant a tattoo in their honor
But they also have heartier options like chewy lagman noodles with beef or lamb kuurdak with tender potatoes and onions
but servings are large so bringing some friends won't hurt
7.9Nhu Lan BakeryVietnamese
our heads turn like an owl whenever we hear someone talking about Nhu Lan’s bánh mì
We fluctuate between ordering the Nhu Lan special topped with ham and fatty head cheese
or the #2 made with chunks of sweet roast pork
but often just get both because the sandwiches here are all around $10
each bánh mì gets plenty of added flavor from pate
8.4LC PhoHimalayan Sherpa KitchenIndian
This is a small BYOB spot on Lawrence that’s serving great Nepali food
and C momos—crispy dumplings served in a spicy sauce that will make you glad you brought a six-pack
This place has some very good Indian dishes
and it’s a perfect place for a casual weeknight dinner
7.6Han BatMiku SushiJapanese
Miku Sushi is a great neighborhood spot for affordable nigiri
Every day from 11am-6pm they have a deal where select maki rolls are half off
Standard rolls like tuna or salmon are $5.00
and combination rolls like their Samurai with tuna
narrow dining space has plenty of table and counter space
so it’s perfect if you’re suddenly put in charge of planning a team lunch for you and your 18 coworkers
7.8Gene’s Sausage ShopPolish
Gene’s is an old-school Polish deli that serves traditional sausages and other specialty Polish items
Grab a couple of each and hang out on the picnic benches for an excellent afternoon
7.6Monti'sSandwiches
cheesy Philly cheesesteak as much as we do
It’s a bar-like space that specializes in the classic Philly staple
which makes sense since the couple that owns and runs the place is from Philadelphia
The authentic Philly cheesesteak is the way to go
and get an order of cheese fries to go with it

Wynton Marsalis blends tradition and present in a new showcase of current composers
Wynton Marsalis is a longtime legend of contemporary jazz
a three-disc-long oratorio about slaves escaping to freedom
was the first jazz composition (and first non-classical composition) to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music
paving the way for subsequent winners such as Henry Threadgill’s In for a Penny
legendary saxophonist Ornette Coleman’s Sound Grammar
he has recorded over 100 albums of jazz and classical music
and nowhere is that more pronounced than the concert’s opening number
"Philadelphia" is a jaunty tune featuring some energetic bebop-esque horn work and an excellent saxophone solo
There’s a sense of possibility in the piece
evoking that feeling of strolling down a city street on a brisk day
Another piece of a similar theme is "Revived Mind," a composition from Korean composer Jihye Lee
The performance masterfully evokes a sense of calmness
The use of flute in particular adds a lightness that elevates the composition wonderfully
Marsalis and Feifke wisely placed the piece as the last song before the evening’s intermission
"Charles," written by George DeLancey and named as a tribute to his son, is a more contemplative piece, although not a somber one. Bassist Carlos Henriquez takes an excellent solo
driving the original groove to new and exciting places before bringing it back in line
enabling the rest of the ensemble to come back smoothly before finishing it
Another more contemplative note in the evening is "Ali Dell’Angelo," composed by Feifke
The work is inspired by the idea of a fallen angel
that idea of a fall from grace and becoming something new
Winding piano arpeggios climb into the instrument’s upper ranges as if ascending a mountain before and crashing against the low rumble of the bass
The composition’s Italian name would translate into English as “angel wings,” appropriate for the epic composition
Japanese composer Miho Hazama was inspired by the particularly unique gait of a friend’s cat
and the piece thus features a playful bass groove
It’s an incredibly fun work that the orchestra handle beautifully
The piece is intentionally meandering at times
wisely providing space for the individual musicians in the orchestra to throw in their own little flourishes
Hazama herself later made an appearance on stage
Leo Steinriede’s "Blues ‘25," an aptly-named modern take on the classic 12-bar blues
is a perfect representation of the concert’s theme: the mixing of the contemporary and the traditional
commissioned by Jazz at Lincoln Center itself through the Arnhold Innovation Initiative
is fairly straightforward yet no less enjoyable
drummer Domo Branch gets a chance to shine with an excellent solo and some clever fills
Staccato piano hits bounce off the brass horns’ melodies for a delightfully invigorating number
Frenetic horn solos (including one from Marsalis himself) make this a standout of the evening
The performance keeps the audience on their toes
drawing attention from one musician to the next and to the next
before finishing up with an extended baritone sax solo that drew much applause
Overall, Contemporary Jazz Masterpieces with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Orchestra is an excellent concert
showcasing fresh works that pay their respects to the classics
In a genre with so many big names that have gone down in history
as Marsalis has demonstrated time and time again

serves longanissa-stuffed croissants and kringles filled with ube jam
showing the influence of Filipinos on the Midwest
While most don’t spend high school meticulously planning the future
that’s exactly what Justin Lerias did and he has the handwritten journal entries to show for it
Almost a year to the day after signing the lease and eight years since putting pen to paper
Lerias prefers to call him an advisor versus a co-owner
Almeda has played a big role in helping Lerias’s solo pastry career
including providing a home for his pastry pop-ups
who constantly bounces around town working on projects
“Francis is too important in our little universe to force him to be in one space like he would if he was a partner here.”
Born on the southern island of Mindanao in the Philippines, Lerias grew up on Chicago’s North Side. His culinary experience includes pastry chef positions at Lost Larson and Big Jones
he dives deep into showcasing both his birthplace and Midwest upbringing
“Del Sur has been the culmination of my life,” says Lerias
and I feel like my pastries are a very good indicator of who I am as a person and how I approach my career and my work.”
When it comes to Del Sur’s baked goods beyond those signature items
Lerias gave his small team of bakers one caveat: no basic pastries
That means that for their version of a plain croissant
a toasted blend of Midwest-grown wild rice and Asian black rice is kneaded into the dough
giving it a light brown hue and nuanced flavors
Del Sur’s adobo brownie includes bay leaf-infused brown butter
makes an appearance and paired with ube jam
Croissant trimmings are repurposed as seasonal hand pies stuffed with fillings like caramelized onions and elote
Kolache will also be made with leftover dough
Lerais hopes to offer a kolache filled with sweet pork belly and an egg
Focaccia and a limited supply of sourdough bread loaves will also be offered
Del Sur will initially feature a pumpkin seed version that’s filled with toasted pumpkin seed frangipane and utilizes day-old toasted rice croissants revived with salted pandan syrup
it’s a way for Lerias to honor a friend who died at 16 from a nut allergy
“That really shapes how I approach allergies,” he says
“I feel — at least for the first six months of the bakery — I want her family to be able to come here.”
One item you won’t find at Del Sur is breakfast sandwiches: “Go to Loaf Lounge,” says Lerias
Del Sur features local coffees from Four Letter Word for its espresso drinks and Ceramic Coffee Roasters for its drip
Chicago’s Volition Tea will supply the single-origin teas and matcha
There’s a tamarind spritz made with matcha and tajin
Banana peels left over from the banana jam on Del Sur’s popular turon danish are being used to create a banana-flavored milk for a turon latte
“I’m always looking for ways to be sustainable as a business,” says Lerias
Much of the equipment at Del Sur is secondhand
which came from Lincoln Square’s Side Practice
Del Sur’s interiors feature lime-washed walls
An eye-catching vintage glass-and-wood case
sits on the marble counter and holds the freshly made pastries
A white linen curtain provides an ephemeral separation between the retail portion of the business and the larger kitchen
wooden shelves hold various products for sale from friends of Lerias
including chocolate bars from the Philippines with beans sourced from the same town as his father
and scented candles from Edgewater Candles (look for candles featuring Del Sur pastry scents soon)
All items are either fair trade or single origin
Nearby are photos of Lerias’s family and friends
illustrations of long bending lines are meant to mimic the layers of Del Sur’s laminated pastries
Once the pastries are removed from the box
Midwestern Flair,” can be seen written on the bottom
three petals are attached to a squiggly line representing Lerias’s mom and his two sisters
but Lerias is thinking about taking over the vacant neighboring space to add seating
which will solidify his dream of becoming a gathering place and community-focused bakery and cafe
Affirmation that the community supports Del Sur comes via a crowdfunding campaign via Honeycomb Credit in January that raised $40,000 in 24 hours and $80,000 by day four
we’re going to be serving good food and drinks
it’s more about how we impact the community,” says Lerias
“Community over competition is the biggest thing because if you’re constantly looking over your shoulder

Piccadilly Market in Lincoln Square will offer sandwiches
Next week, Lincoln Square will welcome a new grocer that will stock products from local vendors including drinks from Backlot Coffee, looseleaf tea from Rare Tea Cellar, and pops from Pretty Cool Ice Cream
February 25 at the corner of Rockwell and Lawrence
Piccadilly could fill a niche in a city where specialty grocers — places that carry quality cured meats and cheese
for example — are seemingly harder to find around town
While they won’t pour hot brewed teas from Rare Tea Cellar (an iced drink will be available)
Piccadilly will sell looseleaf selections and other ingredients
Ravenswood-based Rare Tea Cellar is a favorite among upscale restaurants with unique offerings and gourmet vinegars and other rare items
Rare Tea Cellar sold some tea at Mariano’s when that grocer first opened and before Kroger took over to dilute the brand
Picadilly will be Rare Tea Cellar’s exclusive retail partners
They’ll celebrate the opening on March 7 through 9 with giveaways and more
