Health News
As a case manager at ECU Health Medical Center
Sara Beard-Linton described her role – and the role of all case managers – as the mortar that helps piece bricks together
insurance providers and more to help come up with a care plan
She’s also taking on an important role to help case managers across North Carolina and the country to bring best practices to the work she and her colleagues do each day
Recently, Beard-Linton was named president-elect for the North Carolina Chapter of the American Case Management Association (ACMA) and will take over as president in 2026
She said she’s excited for the opportunity and has appreciated learning from other board members in the state and nationally. She’s especially appreciative to represent ECU Health
share what she believes is working well for the system and hear from others about opportunities for growth
“It’s nice to put us on the roadmap of making changes and being a part of that change for case management as a whole,” Beard-Linton said
“It’s really important to put any egos aside and not saying ‘We’re doing this better.’ It’s all about what we can all do better together to advocate for patients and their families.”
Beard-Linton said she’s seen tremendous growth in the North Carolina chapter as its membership rose from about 200 to more than 1,000 today
The chapter includes representation from 64 organizations and even includes retired case managers taking the opportunity to give back to their profession
Beard-Linton is one of three ECU Health team members on the North Carolina ACMA board
executive director of Care and Utilization Management at ECU Health Medical Center
system manager of Care Management at ECU Health Medical Center
Hargrove has been a board member for North Carolina’s ACMA for five years
She said that seeing ECU Health on a national stage and in a position to influence positive change has been an exciting step for the department
“I’m so proud of our case management team and being able to represent ECU Health on the board
really getting ECU Health out there over the last couple of years,” Hargrove said
“I’m very proud of the work the team has done and now being able to help lead the North Carolina chapter of ACMA.”
Beard-Linton said one of her favorite parts of participating in the board is the opportunity to be a voice for the patients and families the health system serves
She shared that her background as a social worker made her a passionate advocate for people and she’s grateful to take a larger role in that work with North Carolina’s ACMA as president
“We have a committee that looks at government policies on a state and federal level and actually goes to Washington
to meet with Senators and members of Congress to talk about things that are impacting our patients
this is a great opportunity to give back and encourage others to give back and advocate for changes for the communities we serve.”
She said she would encourage other team members to get involved in similar groups related to their field
take opportunities to learn from others and be a leader even if they’re not serving in a leadership role with the system
During the ACMA National Conference in April
system manager for Case Management at ECU Health Medical Center
and Hargrove had the opportunity to present some of their recent work to attendees in Denver
Their poster presentation focused on nearly three years of work to develop and implement a system-wide case management leadership model
the team piloted a shared leadership model with three ECU Health community hospitals in an effort to better share resources and support team members across the system
Keith and Hargrove said the pilot program was a runaway success and lead to implementation across the system
Keith said the work helped reduce the average length of stay for patients while getting them the care they needed more efficiently
improved team member satisfaction and alleviated time-consuming tasks for case managers
allowing for more interaction with patients
“The biggest takeaway from the project for me was the change in team member morale
I think case managers in the community hospitals realized the amount of support and additional resources we could provide by coming in and redesigning the leadership model,” Keith said
“I’m glad to see the program has helped them along the way and the support has remained and carried forward as we’re moving along.”
Hargrove said she is grateful to have teams believing in the process and she’s proud of the growth she’s seen across the system
While she said they’ve received positive feedback from team members and from attendees at the conference
the team is constantly evaluating and refining the program to best fit the needs of team members and patients in the system
These efforts are just a few examples of how ECU Health team members go above and beyond their daily roles to share their expertise and learn from others in their fields while serving on state and national boards
These opportunities help drive innovative solutions to help the system meet its mission to improve the health and well-being of eastern North Carolina

INDIANAPOLIS - Following three consecutive years of heartbreak at Lucas Oil Stadium in the Class 1A state championship
the Adams Central Flying Jets stormed onto the 2A scene and defeated the Linton-Stockton Miners on Friday
for their first football championship since 2000
“I’m just relieved and excited for these kids,” Adams Central head coach Michael Mosser said
for us to be here four years in a row and have three heartache games beforehand and getting it done
That was a big thing we wanted to do… we wanted to accomplish this goal and get it done.”
After entering the title game with the 23rd-highest average margin of victory (25.9) and 12th-lowest average points allowed (9.9) in the state
Adams Central used its dominant offense and a title game-worthy defensive showing to defeat its first top 10 opponent this season
The 46 points scored was Adams Central’s second-most scored in a game this season and the most since putting up 49 against Bluffton on Oct
The 40-point margin of victory was its 55-0 blanking of Southern Wells on Oct
it’s a big testimony to what these seniors have done
they’ve coached their hearts out and these kids have listened and been coachable
senior Max Kaehr brought in the Flying Jets first of four interceptions in the game – one shy of tying the state record set by Indianapolis Bishop Chatard vs
West Lafayette in 1984 – to begin an onslaught of scoring
Each of the four interceptions led to touchdown drives and 27 total points scored by the Flying Jets
running the ball in for touchdowns in seven of 10 total drives – two of which only ended as time expired in each half
“It was a big moment for us to get that turnover
go down and score and then just being able to move the ball as we wanted to,” Mosser said
We knew we had to be able to stop them defensively
and our defense played tremendously today.”
All four quarters featured at least one Adams Central touchdown
with 19 points in the first half and 27 in the second
Seventeen of 18 first downs were secured on the ground
with quarterback Jamison Roach’s lone complete pass – of just seven attempts – also crossing the first down yard
four rushers combined for 351 yards on 55 attempts
fullback Matt Heiser (2) and running back Aaron Hirschy (2) tying the 2A title game record set by Jimtown vs
everybody chooses whatever offense they want to do
Adams Central was the ninth different school to play in four consecutive state championship games
following Center Grove’s four straight berths in 6A from 2019-22
Eight starters between offense and defense for the Flying Jets are seniors
who never knew a season that didn’t end at Lucas Oil Stadium
“[The seniors] have been a class that didn’t do well in the lower levels and always seemed to struggle
and then then they’ve been behind some really good classes,” Mosser said
“They’ve always been kind of a support role
They really rose to the occasion to be an outstanding class and an outstanding group of leaders that really brought it on.”
it’s first championship since the 2000 season coming four years in the making after its three consecutive losses to Indianapolis Lutheran
“Football’s an emotional game,” Mosser said
We start in June [with] scrimmages and practices
I think that just factors into it when you can achieve your goal and come out here on top in a state championship
Most Rushing Touchdowns (Tied) 7 by Adams Central vs

MAYVILLE — Linton-HMB put pressure on Hatton-Northwood throughout the game
Once it was able to convert second chances
the Lions were able to sneak out a 48-43 win Saturday over the Thunder in a North Dakota Division B state qualifier at Mayville State
Twenty-three points from Brooklyn Schumacher and nine second-half points from Jersey Vogel were the difference as Kennison Azure’s 18 points weren’t enough to withold the Lion comeback
It was a five-point comeback that started with Vogel earning a trip to the foul line on an offensive rebound
She sank both throws but the rebound was a catalyst for a change in momentum
The Thunder were able to use their length to grab putbacks up until this shift
“We just needed to be mentally tough through everything,” Linton head coach Michael Schriano said
“They are a tremendous defensive team and have really great length
they plugged up the middle against our man and we couldn’t get anything
So we had to create offense with our defense.”
The defense-into-offense mindset was emphasized on a key seven-point swing in the third quarter by Schumacher
She hit a 3-pointer with just over two minutes remaining before coming up with an inbound steal and score
She had the chance to covert a foul into a three-point play
but would get her chance at the line again shortly after to hit both free throws
but the energy was palpable from its side of the court
We had to put that pressure on because they have size we don’t have and we somehow had to neutralized that,” Schirano said
the Thunder needed to fight through the tough press from Linton
The Lions got to the ball with two defenders in transition and Azure and company couldn’t find the help to break out
One full-court pass to Anika Pinke for a fastbreak score settled it down and allowed Azure and Elizabeth Pinke to breakout
Azure hit from the field and Elizabeth Pinke came up with multiple put-back points from the paint in order to push out to the early lead
The pair’s strength came up at both ends of the court as they slowed down the Lion offense by cleaning the glass
“We gameplaned to stay fresh and we subbed a lot in that first half
Then we didn’t know our assignments,” Schirado said
The Thunder couldn’t keep Schumacher quiet for much longer
She then hit a contested 3-pointer and converted on a and-one putback
going on to lead the first half in points with 14
Where Schumacher would go quiet on the scoresheet again was the fourth quarter
but Vogel was there to eat fouls and earn her points at the line
She went five-for-six in the final frame and kept Linton in front once it took the lead on multi-point lead on her long-range jumper with six minutes left in the game

Lore Linton is executive director of the Children’s Museum of Acadiana
and who were your biggest influences on your life
but my parents moved back home to Lafayette when I was 2 because
I grew up on the north side of town in the McComb area
My parents immersed me in everything our community offers
instilled a deep sense of pride and encouraged me always to give back
My biggest influences were my family and teachers who taught me the values of hard work
My mother showed me the power of kindness and determination
My educators nurtured my creativity and curiosity
and those lessons continue to guide me in everything I do today
You and 19 others are being recognized for your professional accomplishments
What’s one thing you have learned as a professional that you wish you knew when you were younger
One thing I've learned as a professional I wish I had known when I was younger is that it's OK to make mistakes
It's perfectly fine not to have all the answers
learning from failures and continuously pushing forward
take notes and observe the wisdom of other community leaders
There is always something to learn from those around you
the better equipped you will be to face challenges head on and create the impact you strive for
sometimes remember to take your own advice
You’ve been with the Children’s Museum for several years now
my involvement with CMA started in 1996 as a guest
beginning as a high school volunteer with a strong passion for giving back
I spent a year at the museum but decided to explore other opportunities
I always knew the CMA was where I belonged
working in every position until 2022 when I became executive director (something I had always dreamed of)
Now in my second year as executive director
and we are making significant strides toward creating an even better museum for our community
Tell me more about this museum’s recent growth process that’s led to a record-breaking attendance levels
With the CMA approaching its 30th anniversary
my team and our board took a step back to evaluate our mission and ensure we provide a high-quality experience for everyone as a nonprofit organization
but I attribute our significant growth to reimagining exhibits and focusing on STEAM
We've also prioritized accessibility and community engagement through various initiatives
schools and community groups have also helped us connect with a broader audience
creating a sense of shared ownership and belonging
which has fueled our growth and led to record-breaking attendance
How can Lafayette make itself more attractive to young professionals to want to move here
The personal and professional relationships I've built here keep me grounded and motivated to make an impact
Lafayette needs to continue investing in community spaces and diverse career opportunities to attract more young professionals
It's important to bring youth to the table when decisions are made
ensuring their voices are heard in shaping the future of our community
We also need more affordable living options in walkable areas
We should showcase this vibrant lifestyle to others so they can experience the appeal of Lafayette and discover a love for our culture

The first took place during the summer before her senior year of high school
It was a time in her life that UTSA’s junior guard from Duncanville
“It put it in my mind that you’ve got to be a dog on defense
I just had fun with it – all the nitty gritty
Linton came from a storied girls basketball program at Duncanville High School, which has won 12 state titles in its illustrious history. She was familiar with Pantherette greats Tiffany Jackson, Empress Davenport and Ariel Atkins, all of whom played for UTSA head coach Karen Aston at the University of Texas
who was the seventh overall pick in the 2018 WNBA Draft
has been a five-time WNBA All-Defensive Team member with the Washington Mystics
“I always heard that [Aston] loves the dogs,” Linton said
“You have to do all the dirty work and be able to run through a brick wall
I’m going to do it to the best of my ability.”
Linton possessed all of the intangible qualities that Aston looks for in prospective student-athletes
“I look for players that have a high motor
I’m not necessarily looking for the most skilled players in the world,” Aston said
“I think we have great coaches who are more than willing to get in the gym with players and help them improve in the areas they need to
but I think she’s also embracing what her special gifts are.”
Linton first hit the hardwood in third grade
but there was another sport that had her heart even before she started kindergarten
“I played football when I was little – flag football and tackle football
She played football through the fourth grade
but Linton was also game for any sport that came her way
There was a common theme that crossed all of the sports she played in her youth
“I’ve been through all of these sports and there are different techniques
the thing you have to be is coachable and you have to be motivated.”
The second defining moment in Linton’s basketball career came this past fall and it was a result of that willingness to be coachable
Linton approached Jamie Carey
UTSA’s associate head coach who was the starting point guard on Texas’ 2003 NCAA Final Four team and played four seasons in the WNBA
Carey agreed to put in extra work with Linton
but insisted on a strong commitment from her pupil
But here’s the deal – it’s every day,” Carey said
‘It’s time to get committed to being a guard
Carey has put Linton through a one-on-one workout nearly every day at 7:15 a.m
“She gets up in the morning and works,” Carey said
“Our relationship has grown a ton this year
I think any time you show up for each other at 7 o’clock in the morning
We’ve grown to trust each other and share a little bit more about our lives
that’s why I coach - to form relationships like that
I’m really proud of her and the progress that she’s made.”
Linton’s growth can be matched only by her unselfishness
She’s often tasked with guarding the opposing team’s best player and charged with focusing primarily on defense
don’t often appear on Linton’s individual stat line
“I take it personally that Coach trusts me to guard this person,” she said
Coach thinks I can do this and I’m going to do it.”
And while the numbers may not show up next to Linton’s name
Carey believes there are numerous ways that Linton’s stifling defensive presence contributes to UTSA’s collective success
“What Maya does is that she impacts the entire stat sheet,” Carey said
“She does a lot of gritty work that you have to have somebody on your team who is willing to do that
She’s a ball magnet with the amount of plays she impacts
the amount of deflections she has and the number of times she gets her hands on the basketball
I think those hustle plays that she has given us are really
really critical in combination with the other skill sets that we have on the floor.”
Just how important is it for the Roadrunners to have a player like Linton
“I think every team you look at from a championship perspective
“There’s somebody who is okay if they don’t score 20 points
but they shut down the other team’s best player
and they’re willing to make plays on the ground.”
Carey points to Bruce Bowen’s role on three NBA Championship teams for the San Antonio Spurs and her former teammates Tai Dillard and Annissa Hastings on Texas’ 2003 Big 12 Conference Championship team as examples of the importance of Linton’s contributions
“That’s what Maya has committed to and it’s changed her game,” Carey said
Linton’s teammates have taken notice of her evolution since last season
“Maya has been the pesky, up-in-your-grill defender since she was a freshman, but she’s grown so much this past year,” said Jordyn Jenkins
an early favorite for the American Athletic Conference Player of the Year accolade
“To be a starter and to be guarding the best player on the opposing team
Linton’s penchant for defense is a throwback to an earlier era of basketball
but it also gives the Roadrunners an edge against their opponents
“It’s hard to find nowadays because everybody looks at social media and who scored the most points,” Aston said
“But I don’t think you can have a successful team for the long haul and have a chance to do special things if you don’t have one or two players who are willing to give up their focus offensively to focus on a defensive game plan and embrace themselves as a defensive stopper
I can think of championship teams I’ve been a part of and every one of them had someone who was like
Faith plays a central role in Linton’s life
To find peace within her busy schedule as a student-athlete
Her decision to come to UTSA also involved a leap of faith
the Roadrunners had not had much recent success in women’s basketball and won seven games in Aston’s first season as head coach
Linton believed in Aston’s vision for the future and was eager to be a part of it
“It was definitely the coaches,” Linton said
I could just tell that they’re really bought in
they know what I can do and they believe in me
I knew they could help me throughout the process of my four years here
I could see that I could get better and better
Linton has been an important part of the ascent of the UTSA women’s basketball program
The building process is something she has found particularly fulfilling
because we’ve been able to see it all get built from the ground up,” she said
especially with an amazing group of coaches and girls
which included a trip to the Women’s National Invitation Tournament and the first postseason victory in school history
Linton and the Roadrunners finished the year unfulfilled
UTSA let a game against East Carolina in the semifinals of the American Athletic Conference Tournament slip away and the 55-54 loss prevented the Roadrunners from having an opportunity to play for the league tournament title and advance to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2009
“We can still feel the loss last year; it just hurt,” Linton said
I think that drives our hunger to win and to want to make it to the NCAA Tournament
The energy that Linton brings to all aspects of her life is contagious
but also antithetical depending on the setting
It’s practically impossible to spend any time with Linton away from the court and not see her flash her trademark smile
It’s equally difficult to spot a moment on the court when she’s not serious about the task at hand
“I would say I’ve always been a positive person off the court,” Linton said
“It’s kind of funny because people are like
Just as Linton is able to compartmentalize her game and not worry about contributing to an offensive highlight feed
so too is she able to focus on being a model teammate in those times when she’s not playing her best
you have to be positive and you have to be cheering,” Linton said
“It’s so important to lift other people up so they can step up and have the game that you’re not having
I think that’s something you always need to remember
Even if you’re not doing something on the court
you can always do something positive off the court with your attitude.”
Linton’s passion for lifting others up will translate well into her future career plans
She’s a psychology major in UTSA’s College for Health
and aspires to one day work with kids in some capacity
I just fell in love with them,” Linton said
There’s a different feel to this year’s UTSA women’s basketball team and it’s palpable
We’re comfortable with each other on the court
off the court and we know each other’s tendencies
We’re just comfortable and it’s helped us win a lot of games for sure.”
Linton’s poise shined through particularly bright in the team’s win at Tulsa on Jan
Her assignment that day was to guard Delanie Crawford
who entered the game as The American’s leading scorer at 19 points per game
The Roadrunners led by just three points with 4:04 remaining
Linton’s defensive prowess was on full display
“I thought she was the difference in the game
“Delanie is a wonderfully gifted offensive basketball player and Maya committed to not being concerned about anything other than making it difficult to get her shots off
but I think Maya set the tone for us defensively.”
Rather than be overwhelmed by the task of guarding one of the league’s best offensive players
‘Your job today is shut down,’” Linton said
it can’t affect me on the defensive end and that helped my performance for sure
Linton was a player who had the tendency to overthink
Linton has been able to live in the moment
“It’s one play at a time and you move on to the next play,” she said
Linton and the Roadrunners have been having a lot of fun
They’re 14-2 overall and sit atop the AAC standings with a 5-0 league mark
But they also know this is just the beginning
“We are nowhere close to hitting our potential,” Linton said
“We’re not even scratching the surface yet.”

4-seeded LaMoure/Litchville-Marion in the second consolation semifinal game of the 2025 NDHSAA Class B Girls’ Basketball State Tournament on Friday
The Lions finished the game shooting 44.7% from the field
48.1% from three and 6-for-7 from the free throw line
3-for-18 from three and 11-for-16 from the free throw line
The game started incredibly slowly with the teams being tied at three before the Loboes’ Addy Smith hit a three to push her team in front 6-3 with 3:11 to go in the first quarter
The Lions (21-7) responded with a big run to take an 11-8 lead and they were able to push it out to 13-11 heading into the second quarter
“There’s certainly a little bit of a difficult element to coming back after the first round
everybody comes here with plans to win that first one
get in the thick of it,” Loboes head coach Ben Holen said
you got a quicker turnaround than you wanted or anticipated
It’s certainly challenging both physically and mentally but if that was the case
The second quarter saw the Lions go on a run before the Loboes (20-6) were able to cut into it and the Lions took a 26-18 lead into the half
6-for-14 from three and 4-for-5 from the free throw line
3-for-10 from three and 3-for-5 from the free throw line
The biggest difference in the opening half came on turnovers where the Lions scored 10 points off 10 Loboes turnovers whereas the Loboes scored three points off six Lions giveaways
The Lions’ Jersey Vogel went into takeover mode in the early part of the third quarter
hitting two shots and grabbing a defensive rebound all within the first few possessions to give her team a 32-20 lead
The Lions kept pushing in the third and took a 37-26 lead into the fourth quarter
“I think we all just needed to work as a team
I didn’t need to score the points,” Vogel said
“It was either I dribble and drive and then I kick it out and my teammates can score
the Loboes’ Smith had her own big spurt with multiple baskets to bring their deficit down to 40-33
the Lions hit a jumper to push the lead back out to double digits at 43-33 and they kept pulling away on their way to the 17-point win
I thought we were great actually from start to finish,” Lions head coach Michael Schirado said
“We changed up defenses a little bit tonight
went to a little bit of halfcourt pressure that we hadn’t shown earlier and I think it got the girls excited
and when you’re knocking shots down you play better defense
We hadn’t knocked shots down at this clip for a while so we were due and it was just great to see everybody shooting with confidence.”

The fire was discovered by a Natchez Police officer patrolling the area at the time
“The police officer smelled smoke and investigated where it was coming from
She discovered it and called it in,” he said
“There is no telling how long it had been burning
Arrington said it took until approximately four and a half hours to get the fire under control
“We were able to get the main part of the fire out
One neighboring home sustained minor damage because of heat from the fire
“We took care to make sure the fire did not spread to the other houses
This was a huge fire and they stayed tight
it’s going to be a long road to try to figure that out,” Arrington said

LINTON – Linton hurler Keelei Brown shut down Bedford North Lawrence as the Miners posted a 2-1 victory during high school softball action on Friday night.
Brown went the distance, striking out six while scattering six hits, to silence an BNL offense that was averaging over 6 runs per contest.
BNL scored its run in the second. Sara Williams singled, took second on a fielder’s choice and scored on a Dalanie Davis single. But that would be the only noise for the Stars.
The Miners pulled even at 1-1 in the bottom of the second on a two-out RBI single by Laila Gennicks. They scored the go-ahead run in the third on a two-out, bases-loaded single by Bella Franklin.
Davis and Kendall Graves had two hits each for BNL. Karsyn Coleman suffered the loss in the circle, giving up six hits in five innings.
The Stars (9-5) will visit rival Floyd Central on Tuesday. BNL’s Jo Underwood Invitational, scheduled for Saturday, was postponed because of predicted weather.

Wednesday morning both signed to further their softball careers in the SEC − Linton with Ole Miss and Bain with Arkansas
"It seems like I blinked and now I'm signing," said Bain
a four-time all-area and all-state performer
In between they have accomplished their goal, leading Eagleville to a Class 1A state championship and two state runner-up trophies with one more season remaining
"It's actually crazy," said Linton, a two-time DNJ all-area softball player of the year
"(Brinli) and I talk about it all the time
'I want to go to this school or that school.' Now we've signed letters of intent
The softball bond between Bain and Linton started when the two were 9 and playing travel ball with the Tennessee Fury
It grew into an off-the-field friendship and led to one moving several states
Travel ball friendship helps lead to a dynasty at EaglevilleWhen the two began playing travel ball together
Linton and her family lived in Texas and she was traveling to Tennessee to play on the Fury
She would later stay with the Bains during travel ball trips
so the family moved from Texas to Eagleville when Addisyn was in seventh grade
(moving to Tennessee) was about softball," said Linton
who originally committed to Clemson before flipping to Ole Miss a few weeks ago
"We traveled up here every weekend or I would stay with Brinli during tournaments
We ended up coming up here altogether and moving to Eagleville."
The move helped cement Eagleville as one of the teams to beat in Class 1A
With Bain and a cast of talented underclassmen coming up
the Eagles were already building a program that was headed for success
it's a team sport and a team game," said Bain
who expects to catch (a position she played early in her Eagleville career before moving to shortstop) and play second base at Arkansas
"I just want Eagleville to be a program that's competing year to year
I want to leave a legacy for little girls coming up to keep competing and winning state titles."
SIGNEES LIST: Murfreesboro area high school athletes who signed during November period
The team finished state runner-up when they were in eighth grade. They captured the 1A state title as freshmen and finished runner-up again in 2023, a year in which Linton struggled through a hand injury during the postseason
Eagleville missed the state tournament last season
being upset by Hollow Rock-Bruceton in the 1A sectional
A knee injury that shut Linton late in the season was a big factor
Linton is healthy and she and Bain are intent on going out with one more state championship run before each goes off to college
"I'm just thankful for all the blessings God has given me
playing five years with Addi in an Eagleville jersey," said Bain
"It will be different when we get to the SEC
But off the field we will still be best friends."

Signing day was just one more reminder that time is drawing near
Just the culture at Eagleville and being able to play with a whole town behind your back
Then you have me and Brinli playing ball together forever
Our last game of our high school season will be heartbreaking

Oregon had a busy weekend fighting new wildfires that ignited during three straight days of critical conditions
hot temperatures and dry winds fueled the ignition and spread of numerous Oregon wildfires
But the flames and smoke might not last long — widespread rain and cool temperatures will arrive by midweek
Widespread rain of between a quarter and a three-quarters of an inch is forecast Tuesday into Wednesday
according to the National Weather Service in Portland
The rain should help dampen fires that have ignited particularly in the Cascade Range
And temperatures are forecast to remain cool
There is also a chance for around a quarter inch of rain east of the Cascades, as well
The number of acres burned in Oregon continued to grow
The majority of those fires have been grass fires burning east of the Cascades
but it's still been a major season just about everywhere
After a lull in wildfire acres burned during August
Oregon's previous record for acres burned was 1.2 million acres in 2012
The Linton Creek Fire grew to 600 acres near McKenzie Pass by Sunday night in the area around Linton Meadows and Eileen Lake
Forest Service issued a sweeping closure including: The Pacific Crest Trailhead at McKenzie Pass
The PCT is closed from Highway 242 (mile 1985.3) and the junction with the Wickiup Plains Trail (mile 1961)
For a map and closure order, go to bit.ly/3ZlLPKX
burning just north of the junction between Highway 126 and 242
has brought a closure to the Clear Lake area
was issued for areas north of McKenzie Highway from the east end of Drury Lane and east to Old Clear Lake Cutoff Loop
burning just southeast of Lava Lake in Central Oregon
grew rapidly to 1,000 acres by Monday morning
"Multiple ground resources including engines and dozers are responding," Central Oregon Fire Information said
A 52-year-old man was arrested Saturday for allegedly lightning fires along Interstate 5 in Goshen
according to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office
The man faces five counts of arson in the first degree
disorderly conduct in the second degree and resisting arrest
Sparks Lake area outside BendClosure orders have been issued for the Mount Bachelor and Cascade Lakes Scenic Highway area outside Bend due to the Backside Fire
located west of Mount Bachelor in a roadless area
has brought a closure to the following areas
All roads within the area closure are closed
Cascade Lakes Highway and River-Summit Drive will remain open for public use
The fire was estimated at 80 acres by Sunday night
according to Central Oregon Fire Information
There are other smaller fires in the same area
likely caused by Friday night's lightning storm
“Multiple air and ground resources are responding,” COFI said on social media
The fire was one of 15 that popped up Saturday following numerous lightning strikes in the area
"Fires were predominately clustered near the Mt
Bachelor Roadless Area and the eastern edge of Flat Top Butte and East Butte," COFI said
"These wind-driven fires grew at a rapid rate of spread throughout the day resulting in very large acreage increases."
burning southeast of located southeast of Paulina Lake
This fire along with the Flat Top Fire will be managed by Central Oregon Type 3 Incident Management Team
the Flat Top Fire grew to 13,680 acres southeast of Newberry Caldera on the Deschutes National Forest
"Multiple air and ground resources are responding," Central Oregon Fire Information said
The 208 Fire has increased to 8,275 acres and 0% containment as of Monday morning
Fire crews used a good weather window on Sunday night to connect indirect lines using a burning operation
Higher humidity on Monday night will reduce rates of the fire spreading
Stan Linton has been running competitively for half of his life
the Crawfordville native and former Florida State runner remains motivated as ever and wants to see how far he can go in the sport
“I haven’t realized my potential yet,” sad Linton
“I am sure there’s more years to figure out where my potential lies.”
During Thursday’s GWTC Tallahassee Turkey Trot, Linton flashed his potential as he set a course record in the 15K (9.3 miles) at 46 minutes
Linton (2014-18) is one of five former FSU runners to break 47 minutes in the race
While Linton battled humid conditions and clocked the fastest time in 37 years
he’s still chasing the event record (46:26) set by Waldron in 1987
That's when the two-loop course started and ended at the Leon County Civic Center (now the Donald L
10K and 15K) has been held in Southwood since 2002
with more than 6,000 runners finishing Thursday
Winners included former Florida High runner and University of Tampa freshman Xavier England (36:52) in the 10K (6.2 miles); former Chiles High and Colorado State runner Ben Kirbo (15:19) in the 5K (3.1 miles); and Community Christian School runner Jeremy Collier (5:31) in the mile run
winners were Ting Yu Ku (1:10:54) in the 15K; Adriana Piekarewicz (38:24
second overall) in the 10K; Laney Williams (18:38) in the 5K; and Emma-Claire Tanebaum (6:13) in the mile run
'It's a lifestyle.' Former FSU runner Stan Linton still enjoys competing
returning homeLinton has enjoyed a successful racing year
entering nine races in 2024 and winning seven
First-place finishes included the Little Rock (Arkansas) Capital City Classic 10K
the Moore & Giles Virginia 10 Miler in Lynchburg
He also recently competed in the Indianapolis Half Marathon and is entered in the U.S
Linton's goals include racing internationally and representing the United States
I want to see how far I was able to go and test myself," Linton said
It's an opportunity to reconnect with friends and familiar faces
It's also the first race he entered at age 15
Linton has won the 10K race twice and the 15K four times
"It's crazy to think this year marks half of my life being a runner," laughed Linton
who signed with FSU out of Wakulla High and has been a longtime member of the Gulf Winds Track Club
I could also spend hours talking to people (at race) I haven't been able to see (in years)
Linton approaches each race with a specific strategy
Thursday wasn't any different as runners were greeted with humid conditions following a morning rain
Linton ran uncontested for most of the race
Tallahassee's Nate Kaiser (57:09) and Charlie Johnson (57:15) rounded out the top-3 finishers
"I knew I was going to have to adjust my time goal," Linton explained
"I wasn't going to just grind it out for nine miles
I planned the segments where I could go hard and recovery segments where I could recover and just kind of float
It worked out better than it ever has at the Turkey Trot."
