University of MinnesotaRelevant experience: AT&T employee
four yearsBetsy ZemlockAge: 48Residence: Little ChuteOccupation: Financial adviserHighest level of education: CollegeRelevant experience: Lifelong community resident
and current parent of LC studentsWhy are you running for office?Tschimperle: I'm running for LC School Board to fill the absence of a current member who has chosen not to seek reelection
I feel my experience of working in many local school districts will help me continue on the excellence that already exists with the LC School Board
I plan on listening to the existing experienced members and using that knowledge to continue the mission of the Little Chute School District
I care about the future of Little Chute schools and the people who are part of this "small but mighty" community
I feel being on the Board of Education gives me an opportunity to give back to to the village that I've had the opportunity to be a part of my whole life and to also be a voice for the many families whose students walk through those hallways
Our schools shape and mold our kids every day
and I would be honored to be a part of how that looks in the future
What makes you the better candidate in this race?Tschimperle: My professional experience working in the technology field
being an educator and having the ability to listen to our local stakeholders to make the right decisions for the Little Chute School Board are just a few reasons on why I feel I'm the better candidate
Zemlock: I am a proud member of the Little Chute community and believe we have one of the best school districts in this area
I am a great candidate because I have genuine care for the present and future of our schools
I believe that staying connected and listening to members of the school and community is key
but also using my background of business and finance to help contribute to discussions and decisions that work toward building and maintaining the quality of our school district
Tschimperle: The residents of Little Chute feel that the most important issues are making sure that all students have equal opportunities to succeed in their desired areas of interest
Also the residents want to see a balanced budget when it comes to executing the budget
I would address these issues by use of communication tools to keep the residents informed of what is taking place inside the schools and more importantly the minds of our students and teachers
I believe that the constant changing landscape of education is an important issue that people find to be a concern
We need to be relevant with technology and offer the best learning tools while also prioritizing and balancing social skills
I believe it is important to keep a measure of not only grades
but also culture and involvement in our school from students

LITTLE CHUTE - Two Little Chute high school counselors recently won an award for their school counseling program and received national honors as a result
The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction announced last month that Lisa Gretz and Michelle Mokrzycki had won the state's first School Counseling Program of Excellence awards
knowledge and systems thinking to ensure every student has access and opportunity," according to the DPI
Now, Little Chute High School, one of only a few in Wisconsin, has now received the Recognized ASCA Model Program designation from the American School Counselor Association
The designation recognizes schools whose counseling program is "integral to the school's academic mission" and has "a significant positive impact on student achievement
said pursuing the RAMP designation was "was something I aspired to do for years."
Getting the RAMP designation was a three-year process that involved gathering data about the counseling program from many groups
According to ASCA's RAMP rubric
the process of submitting a RAMP application includes tracking student outcomes
creating lesson plans for a small group or classroom and writing an action plan for addressing student achievement gaps
"It's a great way for you to have checks and balances within your program," Mokrzycki said
adding that it also ensures that "we're doing everything we possibly can for our students."
Gretz also is proud of the school and the community receiving this recognition: "I always want our kids and our staff in our school to be seen in the best light."
Now that they've gotten the RAMP certification
Gretz and Mokrzycki have their eye on other projects
such as acquiring a socioemotional learning curriculum and planning their school's Wellness Day
continuing their work of supporting students at the high school
"You never know what a day is going to look like," Gretz said

LITTLE CHUTE — At least 90 dead mallard ducks were removed Wednesday from a storm pond in Little Chute
Around 7 a.m. on Wednesday, the Little Chute Public Works Department saw social media posts about seeing dead ducks in a pond on Buchanan Street
After Public Works inspected the pond and confirmed that situation
said the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources arrived with a biologist to inspect the ducks
Taylor said they have been removed from the pond and are being buried in a landfill
"That pond usually houses mallards and geese," Taylor told the Post-Crescent
"Not a lot of different types of ducks utilize that
These are ducks that are hanging around for the winter
How did the mallards die?Taylor said that the DNR suspects bird flu is what killed the mallards
and testing will confirm whether that is the case or not
"The DNR biologist came out and looked the situation over and told us that it looks similar to what he had seen in Outagamie County recently
where the (bird flu) took the lives of those ducks
So that's kind of where we're sitting with it right now," Taylor said
Bird flu is a disease caused by influenza A viruses
The avian influenza A(H5) virus is a subtype of bird flu
which has been spreading worldwide through wild birds
The United States Department of Agriculture has reported that as of Feb. 26
Can humans catch bird flu?Yes. Though it doesn't usually affect humans, there have been rare occurrences where people have become infected with the virus
Some symptoms for humans with bird flu include:

LITTLE CHUTE — An employee died Thursday at Penske Truck Leasing Corporation in Little Chute
The Fox Valley Metro Police Department confirmed to The Post-Crescent that an individual died
while the Occupational Safety and Health Administration confirmed where the incident took place
to a business on the 2600 block of Buchanan Street after report of an industrial accident
The department said that the investigation has since been turned over to OSHA
OSHA confirmed the deceased was an employee of the company
They have six months to complete inspections
If violations of workplace safety and/or health regulations are found
citations and monetary penalties can be issued
OSHA is also investigating Ndakebuka's death
The Penske Truck Rental hub in Neenah declined The Post-Crescent's interview request
The mallards were removed from a pond on Buchanan Street on Feb
26 after social media posts noted the situation
A representative from the DNR said the cause of death is aspergillosis
the wild birds get infected by breathing in fungal spores from areas such as agricultural fields covered with moldy waste grain during the fall or early winter
"That pond usually houses mallards and geese," Kent Taylor director of Public Works for Little Chute told the Post-Crescent in an interview last month
MENASHA – The 2-3 zone the Little Chute boys basketball team plays makes it difficult for opposing teams to score
but it still took a blocked shot by Trevor Verhagen on a 3-point attempt by Xavier just before time expired to preserve a 54-51 win for the Mustangs
The victory advances Little Chute, with its 21-6 record, to Saturday’s WIAA Division 3 sectional final at Seymour where it will face either Freedom or Wrightstown
who face each other in a sectional semifinal Thursday night
Xavier girls roll into state: Xavier rides into state on 11-game winning streak after midseason 'reset'
“Coach (Jake VanRoy) wanted us to take away any threes they had,” Verhagen said
“I felt like we executed our game plan pretty good
I just tried to put my hands up and block the shot and I got my hand on it.”
Xavier shot 39% (21-for-54) on field goal attempts and finding easy shots was not easy for the Hawks
What made the Little Chute defense tough to work against
Part of it is that it’s a 2-3 zone but not a standard 2-3 where everyone guards an area
it always has someone close to the ball handler
making it tough for him to find open passing lanes
“When teams play our zone for the first time
they haven’t seen much like it in the past,” VanRoy said
“So they’re questioning that a bit from the start
“This group is the first group that’s run our zone all four years
what chances they can take and how to get around it
Our pressure and our hands really slowed their ability to swing the ball.”
The hands of the Mustangs defenders also make a huge difference
“I get made fun of in our league for how much I yell ‘hand,’ ” VanRoy said
“It’s the hands in the zone that makes such a big difference
Xavier’s Joe Gallucci said the Little Chute zone was a challenge
“We prepared all week and figured that once we’d swing the ball
It was hard to adjust tonight and that’s kind of what got us.”
Xavier coach Matt Klarner said his team had two good practices in preparing for Little Chute but didn’t shoot well enough
Vote for the top athlete: Choose from five basketball players for Cellcom Post-Crescent high school athlete of the week
“I thought our guys were ready,” Klarner said
“I thought we got the shots we anticipated getting
but at the end of the day we didn’t make enough.”
the key for the Mustangs was getting off to a fast start in each half
Little Chute took an 11-2 lead four minutes into the game and then opened the second half with an 11-2 run that gave the Mustangs a 37-26 lead
“Playing with those leads definitely helped a lot,” Nolan Jakubek said
“Especially those first four minutes where we got out there and made all our shots
dominate the first four and then just play.”
the Hawks never let the Mustangs get too far ahead
Xavier trailed by nine with 5:33 left in the first half and then held Little Chute scoreless for the next 4:12 to tie the game 24-24 before Manns gave the Mustangs a two-point halftime lead
Little Chute built its lead to 10 at 44-34 with 7:07 left before the Hawks got the lead down to 53-51 with 40 seconds to play
Manns hit 1-of-2 free throws with 12 seconds left to give Little Chute the 54-51 lead
leading to Verhagen’s dramatic game-ending block
Xavier finishes the season with a 21-7 record
sometimes you miss the last shot,” Klarner said
“We kept firing and it just wasn’t our night
We lost five starters and our sixth man from last year
We came back with a brand new group and they had to figure things out

Construction of the 17,452-square-foot facility is planned for this year
The project will begin in May and is expected to be completed this year
