A local woman's efforts to save the Little Falls Diner
who two years ago embarked on a quest to save the diner from the wrecking ball
has to decide whether to keep trying to rehabilitate and save the once popular Paterson Avenue eatery where it stands
Moving it requires finding a suitable location
The site has to have the right infrastructure
The restoration option will also require surmounting several obstacles
"Meeting code compliance in 2025 is difficult," she said
Just trying to figure out how to bring the diner's fire suppression systems, the same issue that shut down Hasbrouck Heights' legendary Bendix Diner, which is currently up for sale
There's also American with Disabilities Act issues
because space in the diner is tight to retrofit for people with disabilities
The common denominator in both options is the need for money
given what's needed to bring the diner up to code
Schaeffer spoke with diner restoration experts who have told her it will cost between $50,000 and $100,000 to restore the interior
"I want to start a GoFundMe once I have some more answers of the next step," she said
" I don’t have anything in place yet because I don’t feel comfortable asking just anyone for money without a plan or answers to where it’s specifically going."
The struggles and lessons of renovating an old dinerIt's been a learning experience
as she's tried to overcome the inertia from decades of neglect
the diner has stood in disrepair and an eyesore in the community
just 15 days before it was scheduled to be demolished in March
it found a last-minute advocate in Schaeffer
whose day job is a radio producer and who has food industry experience
has learned that regulatory issues alone in trying to bring up 2025 standards are difficult
but added that she's keeps attacking the problems
She's looking for angels and has reached out to people at Food Network as well as trying to put together a business model which
shows that the rehab makes good business sense
It is never far from her mind to find a patron
While among her biggest assets are the owners of the property
the reality is that every day that goes by the diner careens toward its demise
a decision on which way to proceed will have to be made
"The last year involved a lot of meetings," she said
who said he's received no updates as of late
"They either need to make it safe or have it removed in the near future." the mayor said
The diner may have to be moved out of town
Moving elsewhere could allow an additional structure to be built that would allow for space for new fire suppression measures and space for ADA accessibility and bathrooms
which she passed so many times while growing up
will return as a centerpiece in a part of the town that itself is undergoing major redevelopment plans
Bringing back the Little Falls Diner would bolster this reputation
"I want the walls to be covered with its history and for the community to come together to rebuild it," she said
