Loch Earn’s Mirror Man statue has returned after an eight-year absence
The iconic sculpture, formally named Still, was a major tourist attraction before it was removed by its mystery owner in 2017.
Community group St Fillans in Bloom and Take a Pride in Perth and Kinross Association successfully fundraised to purchase the statue
created by renowned Scottish sculptor Rob Mulholland
Chair of Take a Pride in Perth and Kinross Association
said: “We are delighted to have supported St Fillans in Bloom to bring Still back to Loch Earn
“This project beautifully embodies our mission to foster community involvement and enhance the local environment
“By working together on initiatives like this
we’re not only enriching the area’s cultural and environmental landscape but also inspiring residents and visitors to connect with the beauty and spirit of Perth and Kinross.”
One Facebook user added: “Glad to see him back
Look forward to seeing him in a few weeks when heading in that direction.”
Made from hundreds of mirrored tiles, Still – known locally as The Mirror Man – was installed in 2014 and often regarded as Perthshire’s Angel of the North.
Mr Mulholland said: “I created Still to symbolise the physical and spiritual relationship between humans and the natural world
“The figure is purposefully static in stance reflecting the awe and power of nature
“It’s incredible to witness how the sculpture has resonated with the people of St Fillans and visitors from far and wide.”
Elsewhere in the region, drivers will face a three-week lane closure on the A9 in Highland Perthshire.

Voe’s favourite hobby is waterskiing on Loch Earn
He started waterskiing three years ago and absolutely adores it – he finds it so exciting
I sat him on a kneeboard in the shallows of the loch to see how he got on and whether he liked it
I got him onto the board and pulled it behind the boat I was driving
I held on to the back of the board… until one day I let go
sometimes even executing 180 or 360 degree turns
As soon as he sees the wetsuits he gets so excited
We get up to about 10mph as we whizz up and down the loch
We always go past the Clachan Hotel in Lochearnhead
People outside do a double take and think they’ve had one beer too many when they see us
He can go through amazingly rough water no problem – some of the boats out there can produce tsunamis in their wakes
He bends his knees if it gets a bit choppy and sails on through
He’s the first I’ve had that can waterski
It’s pretty rare a dog will want to do it
They usually don’t like the noise of the engine
Once Voe’s been on and we’ve zipped up and down the loch a few times
he jumps on the driver of the boat to say thanks
The friendly folk at Loch Earn Wakeschool will often take us out in their boats
but for an adrenaline junkie found it somewhat tame
On dry land he loves climbing hills with me and running alongside me on my bike
his favourite occupation is chasing a ball and squeaky toys
That’s so lovely because when I first brought him home as a rescue dog from the Scottish SPCA he had no idea what toys were
His welcome to people does tend to be a bit over enthusiastic at times
and he’ll shake a paw in the hope of receiving a treat
It’s funny because I didn’t want a collie
Voe was about nine months old when I got him four years ago and was such a sweet little dog
He hadn’t been badly treated or anything
Somebody in Shetland had a litter of puppies and couldn’t find homes for them so they brought some to the Scottish SPCA near Banchory in Aberdeenshire
Numpty and Molly – who are all rescues
He sleeps with Pest and Numpty but gives 17-year-old Molly a wide berth as she is rather adept at giving right hooks
Why is he called Voe? He originated from Shetland
and the name ‘voe’ is given to all the sea inlets there
At least 15 vehicles were vandalized with swastikas and other obscene graffiti in Lochearn overnight
The vehicles were in the 3700 block of Sylvan Drive and the 3600 block of Lochearn Drive
One home's storm door and another home's brick facade were also spray painted
police think the vandal was in the area from 11:30 p.m
The person captured on footage is seen in dark pants
Anyone with information about the incident
or any residents with additional security footage, can contact 9-1-1 or call the Pikesville Precinct at 410-887-1279.
Loch Earn’s famous Mirror Man has yet to return to the Perthshire beauty spot
Campaigners had hoped to have the statue back in place by last summer following a major fundraising appeal
But the journey has been delayed to ensure the much-loved mirrored sculpture is on a solid footing when it does return
Charlie Hardman has been working with St Fillans in Bloom and Take a Pride in Perthshire on the project
He said fans around the world have been asking about Mirror Man’s whereabouts
he insists there’s plenty going on under the surface
“It might look like nothing’s happening
but there’s been lots going on behind the scenes,” said Charlie
“One of the issues is that we needed to have strengthening works done
We’ve also been working with structural engineers to develop a new base
“We need to make sure that when he does go back in the water
he’s going to really stand the test of time.”
Mirror Man, whose proper name is ‘Still’, was installed on Loch Earn at St Fillans in 2014
It was created by renowned Scottish sculptor and environmental artist Rob Mulholland
The statue quickly became a popular tourist attraction, drawing comparisons with Anthony Gormley’s Angel of the North and the Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagen
So there was widespread disappointment when it was removed by its then owner in 2017
Locals set to work raising funds and securing planning permission to bring it back
And at the beginning of 2023 they spoke of their delight after visiting the sculptor in his Stirlingshire studio
the goal was to have Mirror Man back in his place on Loch Earn by the spring or summer of last year
Charlie said the return had taken a little longer
Structural drawings for Mirror Man’s new base were commissioned at the end of 2023
They have only recently come back to the group
And the team are now working with the contractors to figure out a final cost for the project
That will determine how much additional fundraising is required
Charlie says he does not want to set a potential date for Mirror Man’s return in case that jinxes it
But hopes are high that the statue will be back on the loch ahead of next year’s visitor season
“It’s a small community project
that’s counting on the generosity of donors and funders,” he said
“But everything is pretty well lined up and ready to go once the base is finished
“The group has had so many inquiries from people around the world asking when Mirror Man is coming back,” Charlie added
“There does seem to be a huge interest and appreciation for him.”
No customers were inside during the collapse, and no employees were injured, according to a news release from the Baltimore County Office of Emergency Management

Lochearn Elementary School in Rocky Mountain House shut down on Thursday due to air quality health concerns but it’s back in business today
High levels of airborne mould were initially detected in at least three of the classrooms from tests by Alberta Infrastructure taken on Jan
Results from a second round of tests on March 7 were released Thursday afternoon and confirmed the recent cleaning and repairs were effective and all air standards meet Health Canada guidelines
1 concern I have as a principal is the health and safety of my students and staff,” said Danielle Spencer
“I understand having our school closed and then opened was a major inconvenience for a lot of people and appreciate everyone’s understanding as we work together on this.”
The positive results are what the division expected after remediation work was conducted at the school on Feb
the associate superintendent of corporate services with the Wild Rose School Division
The recommendations in the first report from Alberta Infrastructure involved the replacing of all water stained ceiling tiles
a disinfection and cleaning of all identified areas with mould and targeted mould remediation — meaning encapsulation — on some of the bulkheads overhead at the school entrance
Health Canada guidelines state that acceptable readings of airborne mould can be up to a maximum total of 150 colony forming units per cubic metre of air
some classrooms were showing results of 643 and 468 units
The test taken last week found none of the investigated classrooms over 75
“We will continue with testing to monitor the air quality and we will also be developing a roof repair plan,” Majeran said
Structural problems were pointed out in the school early in the new year when the onset of warmer weather combined with the heavy snow load on the roof began to cause leaks
said water was “flowing from the ceilings” in her classroom when she returned from Christmas break
the division followed up with an air quality test
12 but were only fully revealed to Lochearn staff on Wednesday evening
which sparked the decision to close Lochearn on Thursday
And not comfortable now that they knew the levels
They didn’t want the students there so as a precautionary measure we decided it may be best to close the school until the new results came in,” Majeran said
There was “no particular reason” staff were left in the dark about the exact levels of mould found in the school
“They knew there was work being done but they didn’t have the results
At the time we decided it was better to concentrate on cleaning it up.”
Lochearn School serves students from kindergarten to Grade 5
and the roof has been the source of numerous problems over the years

Local environmental group St Fillans in Bloom has reached a pivotal stage in its plan to reinstate the iconic ‘Still’ sculpture in Loch Earn
which was made from hundreds of mirrored tiles and became popularly known as Mirror Man
became a popular tourist draw after it was installed in 2014
Created by renowned Scottish sculptor and environmental artist Rob Mulholland
the sculpture has been absent from the loch since October 2017
It was “put it into retirement” by the statue’s owner who remains unidentified
the group has been raising funds to purchase the sculpture
as well as to cover the associated costs with returning it to the loch
It has now reached its fundraising target and the group celebrated last Friday by visiting the artist’s studio near Drymen
Stirlingshire where the sculpture is being stored while minor repairs and strengthening works are carried out
During its three years in place, Still drew comparisons with Anthony Gormley’s Angel of the North or the Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagen
Rob said: “I’m delighted to be working with St Fillans in Bloom to return Still to Loch Earn
“The sculpture has had a real journey from when it was first installed in 2014
“My original concept was to create a sculpture that symbolised the physical and spiritual relationship between humans and the natural world
and it’s humbling to see the connections people have made with it across the globe.”
The group is hoping to have the sculpture returned to the loch in spring or summer this year
said: “We have been inundated with enquiries from locals and visitors alike who are eager to see Still returned to the village.”
The group is being aided by the Take a Pride in Perth and Kinross Association
which is providing project management and fundraising support
The association was initiated by Perth and Kinross Council
which continues to work in partnership to support 48 local volunteer “bloom” groups to carry out a wide variety of environmental and physical improvements in their local area
said: “I’m delighted the association has supported St Fillans in Bloom reach this exciting project milestone
“During its time in Loch Earn the sculpture gained international recognition – its return will provide a welcome boost to the local community and attract visitors to the area.”
